Beauty enthusiasts will love to explore the new products we’ve selected and the AW 2022/2023 beauty trends from the catwalks. This month, we tried and tested a hair mask and a tan accelerator from the wide range of beauty products from Dessange Paris Bahrain. We also announce the winners of our OHLALA Spa & Wellness Awards Bahrain 2021/2022. Check to see if your favourite beauty spot has made it onto the list! For our monthly food discovery, we dined at WU Restaurant & Lounge, located at The Art Hotel & Resort, and delved into Mediterranean flavours. And, as car lovers, we drove not one but two Porsche Cayenne Premium Editions – we bring all the details in a more extensive motoring spread.

A new season is upon us and the last (slightly longer) summer days are ending. From September 22 onwards, the leaves should change their colours and start to fall. In reality, the landscape won’t change much in this part of the globe and temperatures will still be high. However, there are new styles in the air and we bring OHLALA ’s highly anticipated Autumn and Winter (AW) 2022/2023 Trends Report. Look for staple pieces to keep, dig back from the bottom of your wardrobe or purchase.

A new season is here – at least in the fashion world. The sun will still shine brightly outside for a while in this region, keeping the temperatures high, but that doesn’t mean we can’t embrace the autumn and winter collections out there. We selected the styles and pieces we absolutely love for a great start to our AW 2022/2023 report.

As usual, the keyword during the cold months is: layering! DSQUARED2 brought interesting compositions to their catwalk show. A modern grunge kind of concept that can serve as inspiration for unique and creative looks. We are living in a time that’s embracing mismatching items – be they socks or shoes. Most of the time, they are similar with slight differences. We have our eyes on these earrings from Tory Burch; they are a subtle way to introduce this trend into your looks. Scarves are a good way to add warmth and a sophisticated touch to your outfits. We chose a cute piece from Celine that shows you can have some fun while looking sharp. A style that we are looking forward to wearing is a knitted version of the sweater dress. An oversized jumper or cardigan to be worn with tights and knee-high boots. This grey number is from Malo Talking about knee-high boots, these Max Mara ones look incredibly comfortable. The ‘neck’ of the boot is made with knitted fabric which hugs the leg for warmth without the discomfort other materials can cause. They are also a gorgeous add-on to a laid-back outfit.

A feast for the eyes and the palate, the Friday Brunch at Bahrain Bay Kitchen is reason enough to count down for the weekend. The splendid buffet offers delights from the Wok, Tandoori, Carving, and Seafood Stations, as well as assorted Sushi, Bao Buns, and Italian classics like the Pinsa Romana and Fresh Pasta. If you have a sweet tooth, the dessert station with Japanese Cheesecake, Sicilian Cannoli, Red Velvet Cake, and much more will be your favourite stop. Last but not least, our youngest guests will have the best time in the Kids Club and special buffet for the children. Every Friday, between 13:00-16:00, with live entertainment Per Person Price: BHD 35, including soft beverages, BHD 48, including the selected beverage package Reservations: 00973 diningreservations.bahrain@fourseasons.com17115500 EVERY FRIDAY, WE MEET AT THE AWARD-WINNING BRUNCH

Despite being associated with girls, pink is not so popular when it comes to grownup wardrobes. But this season, brands are determined to convince us to illuminate our looks by adding bright tones of pink to our outfits. It’s time to release the Barbie in you!

1. Floral prints don’t have to be colourful. This CH Carolina Herrera look shows that you can embrace the motif in black and white.

2. This KENZO long-sleeved top proves that even casual pieces look their best in a floral version. The different tones of blue that compose the pattern are the cool trick here.

What have Barbie and Balmain got in common? A special limited-edition capsule collaboration, that’s what. Playing on the former’s signature colour, pink, Balmain’s Creative Director Olivier Rousteing designed the collection’s palette to evolve from the softest blushes to a host of stronger tones. He and the Balmain design team were inspired by the Barbie universe’s familiar bright iconography. Badges, tees and hoodies cleverly channel the bold graphic treatment that one immediately recognises as Barbie’s and many of the accessories are inventive hybrids of Balmain’s signature bags and Barbie packaging. Much of this limited-edition ensemble plays with new spins on familiar Balmain signatures, including the house’s iconic marinière striped sailor print and its mesmerising Labyrinth pattern. If you thought pink was only for girls, think again! Olivier is clear that the collection is almost 100% unisex.

Pink And Posh Going Dotty Manolo Blahnik and Birkenstock have come together once again to create a one-of-akind footwear collection, merging craftsmanship with functionality and glamour with practicality. The first drop embraced velvet and diamanté detailing and was an instant hit with most styles and sizes flying off the virtual shelves within hours of arriving. The second instalment focuses on Birkenstock’s classic Arizonas and Bostons, rendered in monochrome polka dots and minimalist PVC. Always innovating, Manolo first presented PVC styles with a barely-there look in the early 1970s. This long fascination with lightness led him to design versatile see-through editions of the classic Birkenstock Arizona sandal. The timeless polka dots motif is reminiscent of Manolo’s home country, holding special relevance as the quintessential Spanish print featured on the bata de cola, the long trailing dress of flamenco. In homage to this, Manolo covered the Birkenstock Boston and Arizona in contrasting black and white polka dots, in supple leather and tactile calf hair.

Fashionably Fit Spill the Tea Hush! What’s that we hear? Fashion icon Kate Moss, known in the past for an indulgent lifestyle, has turned over a new leaf (pun intended) with a wellness brand. Cosmoss – get it? Cos ‘Moss’ – clever wordplay there! – is in the process of launching and will showcase products such as an anti-toxin tea, face oil, fragrance mist and a selection of face creams and cleansers. Though we understand the prices for the products are not yet confirmed, there are rumours that the tea will be sold at about USD25. Further, the Golden Nectar face oil, Sacred Mist fragrance and face creams and cleansers are, we hear, set at anything between USD50 to USD100. The price of good health!

Designed by Gucci’s Creative Director Alessandro Michele, adidas x Gucci merges the emblems of the fashion house with those of the iconic sportswear brand. The collection was highlighted during the Exquisite Gucci Autumn and Winter 2022/2023 fashion show in Milan. It features the classic, athleisure silhouettes commonly associated with the iconic sportswear brand, as well as unconventional colour play and patterns quintessential to the Italian luxury house. You can choose from a selection of bomber and zipper jackets, skirts, shorts, polo tees, dresses, shirts and trousers as well as accessories such as bags, hats, baseball caps, bracelets, belts and shoes. Throughout the collection, you will see the merging of both brands’ codes; adidas’ trademark stripes have been added to suits, the brand’s famous trefoil is merged with the Gucci logo on baseball caps. Further, the emblematic adidas Gazelle shoe is reworked through Alessandro’s creative vision.

It is a fact that the cold season in this part of the world comes shy and doesn’t stay for too long. However, that doesn’t mean a long coat shouldn’t make its way into your wardrobe. Long styles draw attention to the ankles, where they should finish, and elongate the silhouette – which is reason enough to own one! You can opt for a lightweight piece if you can’t endure the warmth of thicker options.

MADE FOR WALKING Yes, we are definitely bringing boots to the spotlight. It’s basically the only time of the year that we can really enjoy wearing them. And guess what? We are not talking about any boots, but knee-high styles. The best thing about them is that you can continue to wear your summer dresses with a twist as they cover the whole bottom part of your legs and make sure to keep them warm.

Fabergé has introduced a new variation of its award-winning Compliquée Peacock watch. Inspired by beautiful peacock feathers, these masterpieces of wearable art are what you need to add to your ensemble.

A Bird In The Hand JEWELLERY Edit

38 www.ohlala-magazine.com

M ade in partnership with work master Jean-Marc Wiederrecht of Agenhor, which specialises in the creation of complex watch mechanisms, and Master Craftsman André Martinez, an expert in miniaturist artistic painting on watch dials, the new timepieces follow the luxury watchmaker’s success at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève in 2015, in which the Peacock won the High-Mechanical award. Limited to 10 numbered pieces of each design – coloured and monochrome – the watch dials are unique and feature abstract art. The new Compliquée Peacock Arte hand-etched white gold watches are true collectors’ pieces. The dials are engraved by a technique known as eauforte or etching, an intaglio print-making process dating back to the 16th century, in which an image or design is incised onto a plate using acid. Traditionally, this would be a metal plate; however, Martinez has expertly applied this technique to mother-of-pearl to create a unique appearance. This wearable piece of art is available in two colourways. On the dial, the bottom of the etched section is painted with Martinez’s lacquers in gradations of colour and then covered with a transparent lacquer to obtain a flat and taut rendering. The bold feather pattern is entirely hand-painted, which makes each piece totally unique. The same technique is applied to the monochrome dial, but here the etchings are filled with a mixture developed by Martinez, which is mainly ‘encre de Chine’ (Chinese ink) mixed with another component to prevent cracking during the drying process. This special technique also renders the watch water-resistant –the ink doesn’t dissolve in water. Fabergé has always partnered with the finest craftspeople, in all areas of expertise, to deliver creations which capture the spirit of the brand’s past, present and future. Martinez has previously created unique hand-painted dials for the Fabergé Altruist Wilderness watches.

The REVITALIZING BODY SERUM-IN-MIST is a milky-textured mist that leaves a comforting and energising protective veil on the skin. The lightweight texture of this product feels like a cloud of fine mist on the skin. Enriched with camellia water, it delivers a refreshing sensation on application, while the oil phase releases the rich benefits of the formula’s active ingredients into the skin. Through a combination of the nourishing and soothing powers of red camellia oil and the freshness of camellia water, it tones the skin and helps preserve its youthful appearance. For best results spray the product into the hand before applying or apply directly on the skin. It’s suitable for the entire body morning and night. Before applying, perform twisted pinching movements on the décolleté, arms and legs with your thumb and index finger, then apply working downward and in the same direction as blood flow.

BENEVOLENT BEAUTY Caroline Scheufele is a pioneer in sustainable luxury. The first to advocate ethical and responsible jewellery, she believes beauty must be equally ethical. Chopard has applied the same philosophy to its perfumes, embarking on a wonderful undertaking entitled A Journey to Sustainable Luxury Perfumery. To create her fragrances, the co-president decided to work with Firmenich, the world’s leading non-listed perfume and taste company. “Firmenich is one of the most prominent maisons that has chosen to use ethically sourced flowers, plants and woods” says Caroline. “Alberto Morillas and Dora Baghriche, the perfumers with whom I have chosen to develop our fragrances, work with them. I am also well acquainted with the owners, so this is very much a story of mutual trust.”

OPULENT ORIGINS

This perfume is the quintessence of two cultures coming together in total harmony: France’s tradition of fine fragrances, of which it is the worthy heir, and the high-end scents of the Middle East. The creator of this opus, perfumer Dora Baghriche grew up in Algiers, at the heart of the dual ArabMoorish and French traditions, and she carries these two worlds within her. Chopard Co-President Caroline Scheufele asked Dora Baghriche to create a purple iris. The latter was free to interpret this as she wished and selected the root of the iris flower and tonka bean. “I like the interaction that the two materials can have,” she explains. “There is a root and a bean. I wanted to start with something powerful, earthy. The bean harks back to Eve, the original woman, the queen of the world. That’s the idea of this perfume. In olfactive terms, iris is very woody, with a slightly buttery, harsh smell. It is not an easy scent to tame. Neither is the tonka bean, with its silky tobacco notes. It has a little more character than vanilla, with an element of almond.” The iris was the symbol of victory for the kings of France and under Louis VII, it became the ‘Fleur de Louis’, then over time, the ‘Fleur de Luce’ and finally the ‘Fleur de Lys’, symbol of royalty.

alika means queen in Arabic, and it is to today’s aspirational women that this new creation pays tribute. Like all Chopard fragrances, Iris Malika was inspired by the maison’s jewellery creations and is the olfactory counterpart of the IMPERIALE Collection, voluptuous jewellery created for women – contemporary empresses – who own their power. Amethyst plays the leading role in this precious anthology. Like the violet hued quartz, which has magnetic powers, Iris Malika possesses an element of mystery. The magic happens both inside the bottle and outside it when the fragrance finds its place on the skin or becomes a delicate trail.

ince 1828, Guerlain has explored, innovated and perfected its fragrance, skincare and make-up with nature and art as inspirations and a culture of beauty as its signature. This longawaited collection comprises three creations: Noir G, a deep black mascara pushing volume and curl intensity to the max; and Ombres G, a highly pigmented eyeshadow quartet available in six harmonies. Accompanying the capsule are five eye pencils, boasting a creamy, longhold and waterproof texture.

Lush Lashes

The Ombres G four-colour eyeshadows have a unique texture made up of intense pigments for long-lasting colour and unequalled depth. They adorn the eyes with four different finishes: an intense satin, a deep matte, a luminous metallic and a radiant iridescent effect. Developed with care, the formula based on soft and comfortable winter rose oil offers an extremely sensory feel. The shadow glides easily over the lid and can be worked as desired to create a host of effects. The three star harmonies include: N°360 Mystic Peacock, a combination of different shades of blue borrowed from the sumptuous gradation of peacock feathers, set off by the glint of coppery shades; N°555 Metal Butterfly, featuring the captivating metallic accents of butterfly wings in tones of gold, pink, orange and brown; and N°530 Majestic Rose, which has all the facets of a delicate rose petal interpreted in irresistibly soft shades of pink, plum and brown. Three other quartets complete this original colour selection: N°214 Exotic Orchid has shades ranging from burgundy to gold; N°940 Royal Jungle features majestic tawny shades; and N°011 Imperial Moon offers a sophisticated smoky effect, in which black and silver merge and gleam like a moonbeam.

ALL EYES ON YOU

Earthy tones such as warm greens, golden yellows and browns and orangey reds are the colours for this season – intense, rich and warm. One make-up trend that goes perfectly with this vibe is the smoky eye. While the look is most ideal for the evening, you can get away with a softer smoky eye during the day by swapping black with brown or grey. Spotted at Bora Aksu during London Fashion Week was the lived-in smoky eye. If you’re a make-up novice, lived-in means creating an illusion of the product having been on for a while. It’s achieved by smudging the product, which offers a more intense result. Zuhair Murad featured a sultry, smoky eye: nudes all over the eyes to add subtle depth and definition, nude onto the centre of the lids for an eye-widening effect and a soft brown wing, smudging the edges for a smoky, blown-out line. Make-up artist Maria Zhang says: “Smoky eyes are one of those staple looks that will always remain trending, in my opinion. I love using brown or even copper cream shadow sticks during the day for a quick and subtle day variation and pop on some darker tones to transition it into a night look.” Many recurring trends from Spring/Summer 2022 were seen such as blue eye make-up. It ruled New York fashion week: blue liner layered on top of black at Christian Siriano and powder-blue pigment swept across the lids at Kim Shui. Blue works hand-in-glove with the earthy colours that dominate the autumn season. Maria believes that while deeper shades suit the seasonal vibe of less prints and darker hued clothing, you can continue playing with bright, trendy colours for a pop of fun, especially if you’re wearing plain, black outfits.

Hairstylist Ghaida Hazeem says: “For haircuts we’re going to see more bangs, layered ‘70s style. I feel the styles of the 1970s are coming back, those blow outs and haircuts with layers. We’re also seeing a lot of women embracing their natural hair texture. They’re working with what they have. Let’s say they’re going to do a messy bun or a half up half down bun with their natural hair.” Sleek ponytails and buns were prominent on the Autumn and Winter 2022/2023 runways. Bronx and Banco featured high-shine low ponytails and the bun was seen at LaQuan and Max Mara. Roksanda accessorised the bun with a black ribbon worn as a headband. Ghaida believes the messy bun is appropriate for both day and night. If you want to wear highnecks and backless dresses or showcase your collar bone, it’s a great option.

Shimmery metallics were prominent on the runways. You can dress this trend up or down, depending on your comfort level. Make-up artist Peter Philips placed spots of silver on the inner corners of the eyes at Dior. On the other hand, Gucci had selected models sporting shockingly bright metallic eyeshadow, applied in a messy rectangular shape. Maria shares her top three ways to play with shimmery metallics: applying a metallic eye shadow all over your eyelid; using the same product as an eyeliner; and changing the tones of your highlighter to icy blue or holographic from the usual golds, soft golds, peach and pink. While some may debate on the practicality of the jewel encrusted trend as seen at Burberry and Simone Rocha for a day-to-day style, Maria believes otherwise. “Some ways to adapt the jewel incrusted eye trend for a daily look are to add individual rhinestones in the corner of the eyes or on the face,” she says. “You can even wear it as a liner or play around with some bold shapes for the more daring individuals.”

Baby braids means tying only a part of your hair in braids: tiny strands on either side of your face to create tendrils or the braid going horizontally across like a hairband or incorporating braids in the half-up-half-down style. At Dior, Dutch braids at the top of the head were accessorised with a hairband. Ghaida believes this look offers femininity and some strength and will be very much in vogue this season. Another braid style she recommends is a sleek, messy one as seen at Tory Burch and Roberta Einer. Part your hair at the centre or side, tie a sleek pony and then braid your hair and tie it at the bottom. Use some strands to frame your face and pull some from the braid to give it a messy look.

Sleek looks can make your face look bigger, so, how does someone with a fuller, round face pull off this trend? “I would suggest you sleek your hair out and then take two pieces of hair and have them cover your face to give it an oval shape,” she says. “This also makes the face shape better. Even people with small face shapes can do this but don’t cover the face, leave the hair a bit back. It’s called face framing.” You can take these pieces from the top of your head or near your ear.

Braids of all kinds featured on the runways from the long-braided ponytail at The Blonds to the baby braids featured at Brandon Maxwell in New York.

Damp and drenched hair was also a recurring trend. Ghaida feels this is more of a night look and can be adapted for this season by styling your hair as wet, shiny and sleek but straight – no curls or beachy waves.

S

ummers in Bahrain can be a bit harsh, but I must confess that I love summer! It is my favourite season. I like the daylight entering the evenings and looking outside and seeing the sun shining bright every single day. I also like the vibe that summer brings, the laid-back fashion styles and how we all look so lively. I know that, depending on how you spend your summer, your hair and skin can pay a high price for it, and that’s why having a trusted place to take care of your beauty needs is a must in every woman’s life. Dessange Paris Bahrain offers an all-in-one solution with a comfortable salon, relaxing spa and exclusive health club. It’s that time of the year to recover from harsh sun rays without losing that summer glow. At Dessange this month, you’ll find it’s all about caring. You are already aware of the incredible treatments they offer in their spa and salon. However, they also carry a wide selection of products, from their own well-recognised Dessange Paris brand to the most sought-after beauty labels in the market. There is a product and home care set for each of your necessities.

A sensitivity test is recommended before use, so I applied a small amount of product behind my ear and left it for 48 hours. As no allergic reaction happened, I applied the mask to my towel-dried hair working strand by strand, from ends to roots. You are supposed to leave it for five minutes and then rinse. The mask’s texture is dense, which is great as it stays in place without dripping. The smell is also delightful.

In my case, I have bleached blond hair, which means that my strands are delicate and need plenty of care. Applying a purple shampoo or conditioner at least once a week is a mandatory habit (one that I do fail to keep) to maintain the colour looking good and avoid yellowish tones.

56 www.ohlala-magazine.com

If you are a beauty enthusiast, like us at OHLALA, you will know the importance of having a home care routine. You can delve into a moisturising treatment for your skin and hair from the spa and salon menus but leaving with some products in your bag, recommended by the expert team at Dessange, is a must!

My tresses are in real distress because the sun and chlorine from frequent pool time have affected my hair’s health. To fight the dryness and the fading colour, a mask is the best way to bring some life back into my mane. To help me in this mission, I visited Dessange and went home with the Natural Pigma Blond Polaire hair mask. The Blond Polaire revives and enhances the radiance of cold blonds, preventing yellow and orange tinges. It also leaves the hair hydrated, soft and shiny.

www.ohlala-magazine.com57

I followed the instructions and after five minutes, I rinsed my hair and styled it as usual. After being thoroughly dried, I noticed that my tresses felt really soft and, even if that was not on the list of benefits, the frizz was gone. I am past due going for another highlighting session, my roots are long and the colour is dull, so the mask didn’t have the best effect as it would have if my hair wasn’t in desperate need of a colour re-touch. But it definitely reduced the dullness giving some life to my locks.

In my Dessange rescue bag, I also had an interesting face and body lotion. I say interesting because it is the first time I have ever tried a tan accelerator.

The James Read Enhance Tan Accelerator Face & Body’s main purpose is to help you achieve your tan’s full potential. If you intend to enhance a self-tan, you need to use it daily, 24 hours after tan application, to deepen and prolong your tan. If you want to enhance a natural tan, you have to use it daily for up to seven days prior to sun exposure to boost your tanning ability and use it as required during and post a holiday under the sun to intensify the results.

I am not really tanned, but I have bikini marks, so I have been applying the lotion every other day and can see a slight glow on my skin. The golden tone is there and I am hopefully spending a day by the pool very soon to see if I can finally achieve a sun-kissed complexion. Beauty business expert Badia Dhrari, who has more than 25 years’ experience in the sector, explains the importance of listening and communication on the road to success.

www.ohlala-magazine.com63

OHLALA - Bahrain is a country that is home to many different cultures and they have different styles. How can a beauty salon best cater to a variety of different demands?

My client then simply did not return my call. When I asked why, he said: “You didn’t get what I wanted.” Since, I’ve learned an incredible lesson, I focus and listen to my clients’ needs, and my job is to assist them on their journey to achieve their own goals. Arrogance is the enemy of success!

– Badia Dhrari @dhraribadia

OHLALA - What are the main lessons you have learned that helped you succeed in this area?

Badia - If there was a formula, it would be as follows: Leadership + people skills + financial awareness + strategic thinking + expertise in all positions.

Badia - I spent many years working in a successful and luxurious salon in Bahrain. I remember my first consulting project; I was overconfident and convinced that my method was the best.

OHLALA - In your opinion, what are the key elements a beauty salon/spa needs to stand out and grow?

I have also learned that when communication is difficult and stressful and the other party makes no effort, I must end the collaboration at all costs or it will fail and have an impact on me. I value healthy business relationships over financial gain because this will lead to success.

Badia - No salon can claim to satisfy the entire population. It is more about the variety of salons on the market; each salon will attract the clientele that corresponds to it according to its strengths. We will never be able to completely respond to all requests; it’s just not possible. To succeed, I always humbly advise to build on the strengths of the individual salon.

Badia - These are important because they allow me to better communicate, identify and understand my clients’ needs, allowing me to tailor the right agenda.

According to a 2022 survey, the main services being requested are: manicure/pedicures (up 50%) and eyebrow threading (up 50%).

OHLALA - Beauty treatments are an important part of many women’s lives. From your experience, what are the main services or even feelings that they look for?

OHLALA - When did you realise that the beauty field would be part of your life? How did you start in the business? And what have you been working on lately?

OHLALA - Your expertise goes beyond the salon floor, it embraces management, training, coaching, teaching and consulting. How important are these background aspects for overall success?

OHLALA - You have been living in the Kingdom since 2004. What do you like most about living here? Any favourite spot or thing to do? Badia - I feel at home here. I feel that everything is possible and it is easy to meet people. I’m very busy with my kids and my job but, when I can go out, I like to hang out with friends at a restaurant or some new lounge-like place in town.

“I focus and listen to my clients’ needs, and my job is to assist them on their journey to achieve their own goals.”

Badia Dhrari - To be honest, I was a bit lost at the time; nothing made sense to me. When I was 19 and looking for a summer job in France, where I grew up, life led me down this Andreepath.Arrighi was my first boss; she was a well-known and successful businesswoman in town. I was fortunate to meet such a lady; I admired her customer service skills, leadership and professionalism as well as the amount of money she could earn simply by dealing with customers. So, I knew she’d be my role model for ever. We’re still in touch today! Recently, I have been collaborating with a team of experts. We are expanding our services and offering staff recruitment in the beauty industry, opening academies and training centres, putting master classes together and much more in the future.

Badia - We are in the salon emotion era, clients today are looking for an experience, with people who are able to tell them what is best for them and who know how to make them feel important and beautiful because this feeling leads to an increase in confidence.

Maison Georges Hobeika manifest their love for planet Earth and humanity in their Autumn and Winter 2022/2023 Couture collection.

@georgeshobeika

This dreamy collection is the result of the visions of Co-Creative Directors Georges and Jad Hobeika. Each piece is an elaborate tribute to the rare gifts of Mother Nature. It captures the wonders of the natural world – from waterfalls to waves and the blazing sun. The exquisite pieces are brought to life by the skilled ‘Mains Précieuses’ seamstresses in the company’s Beirut atelier. This season’s bold couture silhouettes embody the power of life and creativity through unusual structures, vivid colours and many sparkles. Everything is either adorned with dramatic feathers, jewel-like sculptural formations of stones or crystal appliqués. The season’s palette flushes from Mediterranean blues to sunset tones of peachy orange, yellow, fuchsia and pink. A mesmerising pistachio shade is further enhanced by striking emerald and forest green accents. The couture DNA of the house is thrust into a futuristic realm through various innovative techniques, from meticulous airbrushing to metallic feathers and spikes. Crystallised tulle bodysuits add a dramatic appeal to the looks. Among the finishing touches, the maison’s orchid emblem appears on earrings and necklaces with chunky crystals. Couture dreams take flight, heightened by a heartfelt message of acceptance, liberty and the freedom to express yourself.

Perched on the north coast, along an exclusive bay in Seef District, The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain boasts its own private beach, a magnificent lagoon and an idyllic private island, home to 23 bespoke seafront villas, each with three bedrooms as well as outdoor, indoor and infinity pools. There’s private beach access and a 24-hour butler service. So, it’s no surprise that this is a popular choice amongst A-list celebrities, diplomats and royalty from around the world.

For the health-conscious there are also two gyms, a tennis court, an indoor squash court and an award-winning spa. The exquisite resort is the only hotel in the country to have its own kosher kitchen. And, if that wasn’t enough, after breakfast, nature lovers can also feed the stunning flamingos that live on the property!

ight on the shores of the glittering Arabian Gulf, set in 20 acres of lush gardens and soft golden sandy beaches and only 3km from the busy city centre, this hotel is the perfect spot for a relaxing break.

As I made my way through the revolving doors, I was personally greeted by the Assistant Manager Victor Grafilo. The lobby was breathtaking. Classical Greek columns perfectly framed the stunning black and white marble flooring. Artfully arranged flowers provided a delicate counterpoint to the grandeur of the space, creating a sumptuous first impression.

76 www.ohlala-magazine.com

I was shown to the ‘Club room’, where I was staying for the week. The rooms and suites on the Club floor are located on the sixth and seventh floors and were designed by the French architect Pierre-Yves Rochen. As I walked into my room I was greeted by a ‘Welcome to Bahrain’ banner, a beautiful bouquet of flowers, an exotic fruit basket, a tray with fresh strawberries dipped in chocolate, a selection of dates, baklava and the infamous Ritz-Carlton cheesecake. There were even balloons! To my pleasant surprise there was also a hand-written welcome note from the General Manager, Bernard de Villele, who joined The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain in 2018. He’s been described as a ‘fervent leader and visionary’. I could see why. This five-star luxury resort was in a league of its own. My room was exactly what I needed for a business trip. It had a generous lounge area with a giant flat-screen TV, a sleek walk-in wardrobe with enough closet space for the week, a king-size bed and an oversized executive desk with an arresting view of the turquoise Gulf waters. The standout feature of the room for me was the enormous bathroom. It had a spacious ‘open concept’ and was fitted with a generous deep bathtub, a separate shower area and an LED TV embedded into the glass mirror. It was the perfect blend of contemporary design and comfortable elegance. After a deep and comfortable sleep, I was ready for breakfast. Visitors staying in a Club room, have exclusive lounge access where you can enjoy your meals facing out onto a magnificent panorama of the Gulf. I was ravenous and there was every kind of breakfast item you could possibly imagine. A live cooking station made it almost impossible to decide. My lovely server, Sameer, helped by recommending a vegetable omelette. Served with all the trimmings, the omelette was light and fluffy, my hashbrowns crispy yet tender. It was exactly what I needed to set me up for the day.

The hotel caters to every palate with 14 dining establishments and lounges, including the world famous La Table Krug by Y, which only opens its doors for exclusive clientele. I decided to try Plums. A sophisticated contemporary steakhouse which only served premium cuts of meat and specialised in exceptional seafood. The Plums dining experience begins as soon as you walk in. With its unique, modern, stylish décor and seductive lighting, it’s the perfect venue for a romantic meal or a small private dinner. Our server Ali suggested we begin with the Foie Gras. Imported from France it was served with a light raspberry sauce and celery root puree. The texture was firm yet delicate and it had a rich buttery flavour. The steak tartare was next, a must-try for meat lovers. The Chef de Cuisine, Kaustubh Chavan, informed us that it had been made with hand-churned mustard. It was simply luxurious. I was keen to try some seafood and decided on the pan-seared scallops. They were drizzled with an onion and lemon sauce, lightly garnished with garlic flakes. With a soft texture and delicate, yet sweet taste, they were absolutely sublime.

For my main course I plumped for the prime 220-gram Black Angus tenderloin centre-cut steak, imported from the United States. It had been marinaded in a unique blend of spices, including rosemary and paprika, and was cooked to perfection. There was a variety of sides to choose from, including mashed potatoes, grilled asparagus and steamed vegetables. No meal is complete without dessert, I opted for the American cheesecake with Irish cream liqueur ice cream. It was deliciously light, with a rich velvety texture and had the perfect combination of creaminess and crunch. I couldn’t leave without trying the award-winning luxury spa. I was ready to be pampered like royalty before heading back home.

After being offered a cool pomegranate drink infused with honey I was shown to the spacious and beautifully decorated changing room, uniquely made predominantly of wood. My therapist Yanie began my relaxing body massage with hot towels to clean my aching feet. After a full body analysis, she conducted a sensory test to determine which essential oils would be best for my treatment. We chose lavender for its healing and relaxing properties. Using medium pressure, she focussed on my neck and shoulders. I could feel the tension slowly melt away as she gently massaged the tight knots along my back and my pressure points. I immediately felt tranquil and restored.

For my custom ESPA facial, a gentle cleansing milk was applied before a balancing toner to restore the PH levels of my skin. Once my face was squeaky clean, a refining skin polish was used to remove any dead cells. Now that my face was cleansed and buffed, it was ready to be steamed. A brief manual extraction was followed with an invigorating face massage. Once she had determined my skin type, Yanie opted for the ‘lift and firm’ clay mask. I didn’t object, gravity isn’t everyone’s friend! After applying a lifting serum and eye cream, my face was hydrated with a replenishing moisturiser. After my two-hour treatment I felt brand new. A perfect way to end what had been a magical week. The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain is the epitome of splendour and sophistication, whether you’re travelling for business or leisure. It truly is a ‘Pearl in the Arabian Gulf’ and its exceptionally talented staff were both attentive and thoughtful throughout my trip. This isn’t just a luxurious five-star international resort, it’s a five-star international experience. When it comes to the world’s major cities, a revisit can feel quite redundant but returning to a place you’ve been to before also invokes a sense of nostalgia, making the trip far more personal than the first time, writes Amal Sarhan. This month, she explores the capital cities of Berlin, Paris and London.

80 www.ohlala-magazine.com

CULTURAL CAPITALS

PARIS Oh Paris! The city of love and romance. And baguettes and gruyere of course. The Arc de Triomphe is probably the most prominent symbol of French identity there is, located at the western end of the Champs-Élysées at the centre of Place Charles de Gaulle. Completed in 1836 to honour those who died fighting in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, the structure has names of French victories and generals engraved on its inner and outer walls. Reaching a height of about 50 metres, the monument offers a beautiful view of the city, so be sure to take the trip up. Stroll down the famous Champs-Élysées, which is dotted with a variety of luxury shopping establishments, cafes and theatres.

BERLIN Berlin, though it has suffered through terrible times in recent history, has flourished as an international cultural hub and has a wealth of things to do. We start at the Tiergarten, one of the prized gems of the city and a verdant haven known to locals as Berlin’s ‘green lung’. Covering an area of 520 acres and located quite close to the city centre, it offers ample space to relax, take a leisurely stroll and breathe in some fresh air. It’s close to some of the city’s landmarks, such as the Brandenburg Gate and the Soviet War Memorial. Also, not far away is the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, set on the banks of the River Spree and home to art forms, from painting and dance to literature and architecture, with workshops, events and discussions happening all year round. After your visit, make sure to take a boat ride on the River Spree to admire the city.

Teehaus im Englischen Garten, a popular spot for tea, is also nearby and a must-visit. The teahouse is decorated with flowers and resides by a lake so you can watch the ducks swim past you while you sip your drink and enjoy your choice of dessert.

Going to Berlin would not be complete without a visit to some of the war museums. The Jewish Museum and Topography of Terror are especially worthwhile, the former is an exploration of Jewish heritage and culture over two millennia in Germany, the latter is the site of the remaining underground prison cells and torture chambers of the Gestapo. These locations are not suitable for children. The Berlin Wall is another sight to behold and a reminder of the dark history of the Cold War years and a symbol of oppression and division. A short walk away from the Tiergarten, the wall has explanatory boards detailing the wrath of a divided Germany. Make sure to stop by Checkpoint Charlie where the US Army checkpoint still stands today.

If you’re looking for a traditional French breakfast, head down to Café du Trocadéro, Le Malakoff, Les Gourmandises Du Trocadero. Staples include a variety of sweet and savoury pastries For museum and art enthusiasts out there, the Louvre is simply a mustvisit! Resting on the banks of the Seine, this largest museum in the world houses famous works such as the Mona Lisa, Vénus de Milo and La Liberté guidant le peuple. There is also an interesting temporary exhibition titled The Golden Age of the Portuguese Renaissance running until October 10. Musée Rodin is equally special, featuring works by the 19th-century French sculptor.

LONDON St. Paul’s Cathedral is a central monument of this international city. Built in the 1600s, the massive spectacle was constructed to replace the Old St. Paul’s Cathedral, largely destroyed in the Great Fire of London. The building was the tallest in the city until 1963, and still reigns as one of the highest domes in the world. Visit the cathedral and admire its grand interiors or attend one of the Choral Evensongs for an evening of music, on almost every day. If you’re looking for a break from the hustle and bustle, visit Hyde Park or St James’s Park and stroll through the maze of green and trees. You can also rent city bikes and cycle around for a bit. An even larger getaway is the Royal Botanic Gardens or Kew Gardens, a 30-minute metro ride away from downtown London. These gardens are listed as a World Heritage Site, spanning an area of 330 acres and housing over 8.5 billion plant and fungi species. Art lovers should head down to Tate Modern for their contemporary exhibitions. While there, make sure you stop by at Rosewood for their delectable Art Afternoon Tea in the magnificent Mirror Room, inspired by the city’s vibrant arts scene. Before you leave the city, stop by Borough Market for some classic streetside snacks and baked goods. Columbia Road Flower Market is an absolute delight to stroll through, with colourful displays and fragrant blooms. To top off your experience in London, head to the West End and catch a classic London theatre performance, whether it’s The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Mamma Mia or Grease

Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral is another historic landmark of the city. Though it’s not fully re-opened to the public due to the fire in 2019, the parvis or square located in front of the cathedral and the archaeological crypt beneath it are accessible. Going all the way to Paris would be a shame if you missed at least a good glimpse of the Eiffel Tower. Visible from all parts of the city, it has three floors, so to speak, and can be explored via elevators and stairs. The view from the top is breathtaking. There’s a restaurant and souvenir shop too. You can also find a display that compares the Eiffel tower with the tallest buildings of the world. During the night, the lighting adds to the charm of this iconic monument. If you take the River Seine Cruise, you can see it reflected in the water.

The contemporary interior is marked with Mediterranean influences: an expanse of blue and white punctuated by verdant indoor foliage. A large mural in the same colour palette catches my eye. There’s groovy music playing and we’re tempted to dance but settle for foot-tapping.

Our luncheon adventure begins with The Art of Mezze served alongside some flat bread. The platter features staples such as hummus – traditional and pistachio – baba ghanoush with walnuts, beetroot mutabel, tabbouleh, fattoush with halloumi cheese, vine leaves with burghul wheat, lamb kibbeh, spinach fatayer and Akkawi cheese rolls. While every item is on point, I particularly enjoy the nutty variation of the good ol’ hummus. It’s the perfect dip for my kibbeh, which is crisp on the outside and stuffed with juicy minced lamb and pine nuts.

Next, comes Salmon Tartar, a tower of buttery avocado and rich, citrusy salmon garnished with peppery rocket leaves and salty capers. The balance of flavours, colours and textures in this refreshing dish make it a hit at our table. After this, we enjoy Roasted Goat Cheese, a dish of cheesy discs topped with microgreens. We eat them with the accompanying roasted pumpkin and caramelised figs – a burst of sharp, salty, sweet and smoky all at once. Our last appetiser is the Lobster and Avocado Salad. Bitesized chunks of the crustacean, de-shelled and poached, are perched on a drizzle of sour cream and smoked paprika. The creamy sauce elevates the sweetness of the bouncy lobster and the silken avocado complements this star of the plate. Having whet our appetites, we move on to the mains. Making a grand entry is another treasure of the ocean, Chargrilled Octopus. I’ve tried this protein only twice before so, I’m looking forward to this dish of seared and smoky octopus, roasted potatoes, tomatoes and olives. Surprise! Octopus isn’t chewy if it’s cooked right. I can hardly tell if I’m still eating lobster because that’s how tender it is. It takes on the flavours of the salty olives, tangy tomatoes and earthy thyme. Next, comes Citrus Infused Salmon, a fillet of Norwegian salmon baked to perfection. The skin is crispy and the flesh, flaky. It’s served with a side of comforting mashed potatoes and a bouquet of grilled asparagus. The protein is anointed with a light, zingy sauce. I can taste lemon and orange zest. Complementing this flavour is the sweetness from wildflower honey.

Our meaty affair continues with Herb Crusted Rack Of Lamb, a rustic dish.

Cooked to medium, the steak is succulent and juicy.

Adding some turf to our surf is the tenderloin steak with a side of onion rings, grilled vegetables and sautéed potatoes. You could ask for fries, mashed potatoes or gratin instead. We douse our steak with the mushroom sauce, which adds depth to each meaty mouthful. Black pepper, Béarnaise sauce or herb jus, made from the juices of the meat, are other options.

www.ohlala-magazine.com87

The light coating elevates the flavour of the meat and the bright summer vegetables of the ratatouille add a pop of colour, making the dish visually appealing. We wash down our feast with unique creations from the bar. Smoky WU, a refreshing mocktail, comes with a side of showmanship – on lifting the dome, a cloud of smoke dissipates to reveal this concoction, which I truly enjoy.

The smoky aftertaste gives it an edge. We also try WU’s signature Green Fairy, with undertones of green apple, and the spicy, tomato juice-based Picanto.

Almond Crunch Inspiration and Grand Chocolate Delice await us at the finish line. The former is a chewy, nutty wafer balanced on a scoop of vanilla ice cream, floating in a pool of cream blanketed with chocolate dust. If you want to enjoy the real flavour of this dish, try a bite with all the elements including the orange zest that sneaks up on you as you savour the taste. The latter is a finger of chocolate mousse on a ‘crunch’ base laid on top of berry dust. The flavours are quite rich, making it a must-try for chocolate lovers. All in all, a great and tasty experience.

92 www.ohlala-magazine.com OHLALA WAS INVITED TO SPEND THE DAY IN TWO OF PORSCHE’S NEW PLATINUM EDITION, THIRD-GENERATION, CAYENNE MODELS. NEW PLATINUM PORSCHEEDITIONCAYENNE

www.ohlala-magazine.com93 DIVA Drives I

t’s hard to believe that 20 years have passed since the first-generation Porsche Cayenne was released in 2002. Encouraged by the car’s planet-wide success, the German automaker then released the second-generation Cayenne around 12 years ago, in 2010 – a model that has also enjoyed massive sales on a global scale. Then, in 2017, the much anticipated third-generation Cayenne was launched, and was greeted with the same level of success the series has now become accustomed to.

Third-generation models selected for the Platinum Edition include the Porsche Cayenne, the Porsche Cayenne S, the Cayenne E-Hybrid, as well as the corresponding coupé variants. This month, thanks to Porsche Centre Bahrain, the OHLALA team received the opportunity to test-drive not one, but two Platinum Edition Cayenne models, namely the Cayenne and the Cayenne S.

Fast forward to 2022 and Porsche has decided to go one step further. They’ve now launched a new Platinum Edition of selected third-generation Cayenne models. This special edition of the mid-sized, luxury crossover SUV is characterised by exclusive design elements, as well as by additional standard equipment.

The Cayenne Platinum Edition is characterised by numerous model-specific details in satin-finish platinum. The inlays in the slats of the front air intakes, the Porsche lettering integrated in the LED rear light strip, the model designation at the rear, along with the standard 21-inch RS Spyder Design wheels (exclusively reserved for the Platinum Edition), are all painted in this distinctive looking colour.

Drives EXTERIOR

94 www.ohlala-magazine.com DIVA

The dynamic design of these models can be appreciated from first glance, with their bold yet elegant looking exteriors. At the front end, both the Cayenne and the Cayenne S feature enlarged air intakes, a clear indicator of their advanced performance capabilities. The horizontal light edges emphasise the width of the SUV, giving it an athletic appearance, even when standing still. Both Cayenne models are fitted with LED lights as standard, combined with the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS). This provides a variety of light modes including options especially designed for cornering. The iconic Porsche lettering extends across the rear lights of the vehicles, featuring a three-dimensional design and an end-toend strip of narrow LEDs. What we found most impressive were the new exterior design elements, only found on Platinum Edition models.

The premium materials used throughout the interior consist of genuine wood-grain trim, leather upholstery with contrast stitching, along with soft-touch finishes. Everything about the interior of these models exudes a sense of exclusivity and practicality.

Once again it was the Platinum Edition special features that really caught our attention.

A wide range of refinement options for the interior and exterior are also available – from selective changes to extensive modifications.

The volume of the storage compartments has been increased by 100 litres and now offers an impressive 770 litres – a capacity that can be greatly increased with the rear seats folded flat. This makes these Cayenne models very practical for day-to-day use. For those with children, the Cayenne’s LATCH system provides sets of anchors on both the outer rear seats, along with a tetheronly connection for the centre rear seat.

Other great Platinum Edition special features include the panoramic roof system, privacy glass, a Bose surround-sound system, along with the Porsche crest on the front and rear headrests.

“What we found most impressive were the new exterior design elements, only found on Platinum Edition models.”

www.ohlala-magazine.com95

There is plenty of head, shoulder and leg room for all occupants, throughout both models.

INTERIOR Upon interior inspection of these models, we were greeted by ergonomic, eight-way, power-adjustable front bucket seats, that are the very definition of both comfort and support.

This detailing adds hugely to the exclusive nature of these Cayenne models, making them feel like a new generation of their Otherown.special design elements of the Platinum Edition include the black trimmed sport tailpipes and rear windows, that emphasise the sporty and refined nature of this elite series.

We found the Crayon seatbelts and brushed aluminium door entry sills, complete with ‘Platinum Edition’ logo, to add a touch of class, as did the ambient lighting, textured aluminium interior package and silver-coloured trims.

INFOTAINMENT & CONNECTIVITY

DIVA Drives

First, we put the Cayenne model through its paces. Its sixcylinder, 3.0L turbo engine produces 340hp (250kW) and 450Nm of torque. This enables the model to accelerate from 0 - 100km/h in just 6.2 seconds, and to achieve a top-speed of Next,245km/h.the Cayenne S. This model is powered by a 2.9L, V6 engine with twin turbocharging. It delivers 440hp (324kW) and 550Nm of torque. It can surge from 0 - 100km/h in just 5.2 seconds and boasts a maximum speed of 265km/h - very impressive for an SUV weighing in at almost two tonnes!

Our first impression of the infotainment system was that there were a lot of buttons on the dashboard. However, we quickly learnt how to navigate these controls, due to their optimal positioning and logical nature.

As expected from Porsche, both the Cayenne and Cayenne S models have been equipped with a plethora of both safety and assistance features. These include, as standard, ABS, Brake Assist, Night Vision Assist with thermal imaging camera, Lane Change Assist, Park Assist with Surround View, Tyre Pressure Monitor, Stability Control, Traction Control, Blind Spot Monitoring and a backup camera, just to name a few. Several airbags are also located throughout the interior of both the Cayenne and Cayenne S.

We found both models to be remarkably responsive, with the Porsche Traction Management system (PTM) expertly distributing the driving force between the drive axles. The cornering and braking abilities of these outstanding vehicles are second to none and we always felt in complete control, even at higher speeds and around tricky corners.

SAFETY & ASSISTANCE

The Porsche Advanced Cockpit is fully integrated into the luxurious interior environment. A 12.3-inch, full-HD touchscreen is the heart of the latest generation Porsche Communication Management system (PCM), which we found to be both responsive and user-friendly. An array of digital functions can be operated intuitively, including by voice control, whilst the standard Porsche Connect Plus allows access to the internet, online services and navigation.

For more information or to book a test drive of your very own, please call Porsche Centre Bahrain on 1745 9911. @porschecentrebahrain

Both of the models we tested house powerful turbo engines, eight-speed Tiptronic S gearboxes, and optimum chassis systems.

The Cayenne series was designed to combine typical Porsche performance with excellent day-to-day practicality. When enhanced to the Platinum Edition, the exceptional nature of these models is elevated to new heights.

Additionally, these all-wheel-drive models offer a superior rough terrain experience. With four off-road modes available, including Mud, Gravel, Sand or Rocks. This ensures that the driver can select the right setup for the immediate terrain.

Furthermore, we appreciated the environmentally friendly nature of both the Cayenne and Cayenne S models with CO2 emissions of 217 - 210g/km, and 225 - 220g/km, respectively.

The driver has access to a central analogue tachometer, flanked by two seven-inch, full-HD displays that present relevant driving data. This can be controlled through the multi-function steering wheel. We loved the beautifully designed, Platinum Edition analogue clock, conveniently located amongst the controls on the dashboard.

POWER & PERFORMANCE

- Purchase items from brands that have an eco-friendly approach. Labels that work with natural materials and invest in sustainable alternatives.

- Rely on styling. Look at your clothes and try to make different combinations to exhaust their potential. Mix and match them as much as possible. Go back to our fashion pages and try to apply our tips to your wardrobe and create different looks.

The same thing happens with your personal style; it is not static. It changes. You don’t have to like the same clothes you did a few years ago or even from the previous season. Clothes and accessories are important elements in our everyday lives. They allow us to explore different versions of ourselves while also inspiring and giving confidence.

- Donate the clothes that you don’t wear anymore but which are still in good condition. And if they aren’t, contact specific recycling places that will give the right destination for this kind of trash.

The Fashion Impact PEXELSATMADEREADY

Change is part of human nature – and it always finds a way to enter our lives. Maybe your friend group is not the same; maybe your neighbours moved out, and undoubtedly, even if you fight it off, your hair will eventually go grey.

A problem with purchasing new clothes on a regular basis is how, in the long run, this habit will affect the environment. There are ways to embrace a fashion experience more consciously:
