s is usually the case with morning emails, the main bulk are ‘trashable’ just as they are, sitting in the Inbox, unopened. A bit harsh you say, but it’s a familiar scene of PR heavy, mass sent, impersonal and irrelevant material. One day though, layered within said mail, I received a link to a highlight of Lanvin’s photo exhibition, which takes place in Paris’ Maison Européenne de la Photographie until the end of October. I’m sure you’ll share my enthusiasm when I say the images had me open-mouthed and oscillating my head in awe. For all those kinds of emails that ping haphazardly, there’s always one that cements a perfect feature right there and then and elicits a happy dance. We at Ohlala strive for visual appeal. While the digital world has shifted the dynamics of publishing and allowed for so many creative possibilities of editorial execution, it’s perhaps made print a little stagnant. But it’s also made the physical product that much more sacred. Having big, beautiful, strong and luxurious images spread over several pages is our monthly mission and we relish the “ooh and aah” moments when dreamy shoots take shape. The behind-the-scenes images of the makings of Lanvin made us realise how much we love photography. We want our magazine to be coffee-table ready; something that you want to leave open, just like that. So enjoy the power of photography in this month’s issue, from our fashion fixes, Rami Kadi’s cutting edge lookbook, the best of stand-out beauty and our glorious gastronomic guide - never underestimate the prowess it takes to translate mouthwatering food on the page!

First Word

October is here and so is the absurdity of traffic. For those lucky expats – like myself – who, despite the heat in full throttle, had the pleasure of experiencing the disappearing levels of traffic over the summer, are now facing the return of our daily nightmare. Now that schools are in full swing, the roads are let’s say, outrageous. Come 6pm and it seems like a nightmare is unravelling. If you’re struggling to understand my predicament, try getting from Industrial Area to West Bay on a Sunday afternoon. Let’s start with the fact that traffic lights now take a painstaking six minutes to turn green, only to last 30 seconds. For the privileged among you living at The Pearl, you have won in life. To make life even worse, the air con in my car decided to stop working one day at 10am with me in full makeup. Boy did I hit the road at full speed with all windows rolled down. Adding salt to the wound, my best friend’s car, also has no air con. Now, I hope you have a better understanding of my dislike for traffic. My mornings consist of melting from Al Saad to West Bay and drinking three litres of water before getting into the office. October, please be good to me and give me the best weather you’ve got.

The Tissot Lady not only exudes femininity with its petal-like hands, bezel and smooth lines, the collection offers a variety of colours and style, to answer to diverging tastes. A rose is always engraved on the caseback of every Swiss-made Tissot Lady watch with a quartz movement. It is the flower represented on the Tissot Coat of Arms. Through the representation of the rose, Tissot honours women, their strength and essence and reminds them to live life to the fullest. Thanks to the Powermatic 80 movement, it is the first time that Tissot is able to send that message with an automatic piece.

The World

of Lanvin The iconic fashion house is having a moment. You could argue Lanvin has claimed so many moments in couture history, but now there’s an exhibition honouring the French fashion house’s trajectory at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris. In a series of behind-the-scenes images, these exquisite manifestations give a glimpse into Lanvin’s collections over the years. Having been founded in 1889, the French couture house is the oldest staple of luxury women’s ready-to-wear, men’s ready-to-wear, men’s bespoke and made-to-measure, accessories, children’s wear and bridal collection. The humble, effervescent Alber Elbaz has been in Lanvin’s artistic director hot seat since 2001. His instantly likeable qualities draws everyone in. His highly elegant background in fashion lends credence to what he has created with Lanvin through time. He was born in Casablanca and raised in Israel, where he graduated from Shenkar College, the Tel Aviv School of Fashion and Textiles. He then trained in New York, where for seven years (from 1989 to 1996) he was the righthand man of Geoffrey Beene, the High Society American couturier. In September 1996, he took over as head Prêt-à-Porter designer for Guy Laroche until 1998. He successfully produced collections there from Autumn-Winter 1997 to Spring 1999. On 2nd November 1998, he took over from Yves Saint-Laurent as artistic director for the Yves Saint-Laurent Rive Gauche collections until 2000. His Autumn-Winter 1999, Spring54

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Summer 2000 and Autumn-Winter 2000 collections managed to perpetuate a style and successfully marry the past and the future. For Lanvin, he recommends an urban elegance where emotion and optimism kindle desire. He reconciles modernity and femininity, technique and originality, sensuality and creativity. The exhibition pays homage not only to the creative process but to the digital age, where we live through our screens, “We no longer look; we film. We no longer listen; we tape. And we no longer talk; we post,” says Alber. Being consciously aware of how screens are a second critic to his work, he says: “What looks good on the screen is not necessarily going to look good or feel comfortable on the body.” Man of the The digital medium has thrown the Moment Alber was balance of power into a new dimension selected to be on the TIME 100 of criticism, where Lanvin is now aiming list of the most influential to create a world of more volume, moving people in the world for 2007 away from flatness. These images reveal the intimacy of the construction process, the attention to detail of the technical work and the magic of the catwalk shows. The exhibition is on till 31 October 2015

Woman of the Month

Ab o ve

Pa r

In what’s usually associated with men, fun and fearless Yasmian Al-Sharshani is conquering the world of golf. The young and empowering athlete is taking the lead and there’s no stopping her.

F

ear isn’t something that is easily defined. For Yasmian, there are no boundaries in her pursuit to become one of the top pioneers in the athletic community. The young and talented Qatari started her golfing passion at a very young age, 11-years-old to be exact. Little did she know her incredible effort would take her to the pinnacle of great and successful opportunities within her beloved sport. Yasmian is lucky enough to be supported by her family, who share her triumphs and are happily by her side, especially her mother. “My entire family loves sports, I was lucky enough to start young and to have everyone’s support,” adds the athlete. Coming from a family where everyone is involved, including her sister, who also takes part in professional golfing – her involvement in the field was bound to happen. Ohlala was utterly intrigued as to what it takes to pull through in a world where her peers are only… men. As we rush to the coffee shop, where we have arranged to meet with Yasmian, we wait patiently and toss over ideas of what to expect. Petite Yasmian walks in as she waves with a subtle hello. We wave back. First thought? Perfect start. Yamian is not your usual athlete with outrageous man-biceps; instead, she sports a slim and sleek frame. As she sits down, we are submerged in a chat about the world of golf alongside our favourite topic: empowering women around the globe. Being educated in Greece, the former golfer obtained her bachelor in Physical Education which only spurred her to continue in the field. And so she did last May, where she successfully 74

www.ohlala-magazine.com

completed her masters – also in Greece – with a Management and Organisation of Olympic Events degree. The bright athlete is not only tackling the world of sports, she also participates in seminars to encourage and empower other budding athletes where she stresses the importance of exercising. “I like to inspire young adults by showing them what I do, to teach them they can do it as well.” But don’t let gender fool you. This outstanding woman won a prestigious recognition accolade in 2015 for the Business Woman Awards in the field of sport for her stellar contribution to the country. “I am very proud to be a woman. A few years back a lot of things were limited to women. Now Qatar supports women like me,” added the athlete when asking her about her struggles of

being a female in this industry. Of course, HH Sheikha Moza, who has been instrumental in seeing the furthering of education for women, lit up in our conversation acknowledging how important it is for the country to have a strong female pillar for the development of a strong nation. However, HH Sheikha Moza and her impeccably brilliant achievements were for another coffee date to mull over! Yasmian recalls having an arduous time because she was the only female in her field. “At times I would get bored, I was the only lady playing that sport. With

time it has gotten better, my mum comes along with me.” Abiding a strict schedule, the golfer’s daily regime of training and attending the gym to be able to perform on endurance competitions is intense, as you’d expect. The future for Yasmian is yet to be written, but one thing the athlete is certain about is her love for golfing and excelling at what she does best.

“I like to inspire young adults by showing them what I do, to teach them they can do it as well”

The Musings

of a Modern Woman As Kendall Jenner is the global face for Estée Lauder’s newest fragrance, Modern Muse Le Rouge, inspired by the glamorous, more provocative side of a Modern Muse, she answers quick fire questions about what inspires her and gives a behind the scenes insight into the campaign shoot.

I feel daring when…? I wear Modern Muse Le Rouge. I feel confident when…? I’ve got a great outfit on I feel sexy when…? I’m sun-kissed. Who inspires you and why? My family is a huge inspiration for me; they’ve always been there through it all. How does wearing the colour red make you feel? Strong and confident, extremely girlie and ready for an evening out. What is your favourite way to apply fragrance? I spray it everywhere and a lot of it! I especially like to spray it in my hair because it really absorbs the smell and every time I move, you can smell it. What is the earliest scent you can remember? My mother’s cooking…she’s an incredible cook! What is your favorite red fashion moment? Red around Christmas time always feels right. 84

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Modern Muse Le Rouge is your first fragrance campaign. Why is this important to you? This is so important to me because I feel it really validates all my hard work. This is a huge moment in my career and it’s something I’ve always wanted to do… My dreams are becoming my reality and I feel so lucky. The campaign was shot on the streets of LA. Any funny/interesting moments happen on set? It was shot right after my birthday in LA so I was in great spirits! Also to be shooting in my home town, there’s nothing better. We had shot in the streets of Downtown LA and I went unnoticed for a bit (which is rare) however, at one point the paparazzi found us so we had to cover up with umbrellas for the remainder of the shoot. Describe the type of woman you think will like Modern Muse Le Rouge A stylish, strong, very feminine woman.

Good as Gold

In the next chapter of the Michael Kors Fragrance empire, The Gold Collection has hit the scene. Each of the three individual scents were designed to reflect the opulence and luxury of the highly prized metal - from white, to rose, to 24K gold. The advertising campaign, captured by Mario Testino, features a seductively bronzed Karmen Pedaru, Michael Kors’ muse, wearing a glamorous array of mixed metallic accessories that radiates the Michael Kors luxe gold lifestyle. He gives us a few golden moments to talk about his vision. The Inspiration

“I’ve always loved gold - to me, there’s nothing more glamorous and opulent than the shimmer of gold, especially on sun-kissed skin. A luxe fragrance is the finishing touch for any girl.”

Golden Days

“There are so many fabulous gold moments in classic Hollywood movies. There was Katharine Hepburn in the gold lamé gown in Bringing up Baby - the one that rips. I love Katharine Hepburn and that scene makes me laugh every time. Grace Kelly literally glowed in a gold gown in To Catch a Thief. And of course, there was the pleated gold lamé dress that Marilyn Monroe wore in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, the censors thought it was so risqué they only allowed it to be shown from the back. And last but most opulently, there was Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra.” 86

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Best of Three

“The idea behind the fragrances is more about individual preferences. Sometimes a woman wakes up and she’s feeling powerful and she puts on white gold. Other times she wants to be a little more romantic so she slips on rose gold. Or she wants to be completely glamorous so she wears yellow gold. And then there are women who only wear one metal or the other. I think when you smell all three fragrances you’ll find the one, or two, or three that work for you. There’s also going to be a new jewellry collection to complement these fragrances.”

Quick Fire

“The three words that come to mind when I hear gold are: opulent, luxurious, glamorous.”

Final Remarks

“I think you have to be very confident to wear head-to-toe gold, and I’d say keep the makeup and hairstyle to a minimum.”

“Sometimes a woman wakes up and she’s feeling powerful and puts on white gold. Other times she wants to be a little more romantic so she slips on rose gold. Or she wants to be completely glamorous and wear yellow gold”

Travel Escapes Arriving in Belgium

The Lowdown on Bruges

For the love of flea markets!

“I don’t know if the weather had

The first thing that came to mind when I decided to travel to Belgium is: “How much chocolate will I be able to bring from Belgium?” The second thing was: “Finally, I’ll be able to practice my French!” And last, but not least, the third thing that crossed my mind was: “I will finally have a breather from the heat.” After seven hours in a plane, which I thought was nothing compared to trips I usually take (transAtlantic), I arrive in beautiful Brussels. Taking a 30min train journey to the city, the weather was absolutely perfect for a stroll in the new city I was about to discover. The one thing that caught my eye – and this is for all art lovers – I was able to appreciate the artistic scenery with its beautiful shops, some décor-oriented with a vast selection of antique items. There is nothing more fulfilling and inviting, than travelling to a place where inspiration is all over the place, ready to be absorbed.

Have you ever watched, In Bruges with Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson? Well that was my next stop in Belgium. Being the capital of West Flanders in northwestern Belgium, if you thought fairy tales didn’ exist, Bruges proves otherwise. Everything in Bruges is petite from its dolllike structures to its colourful doors; this fantastic city is a movie set. If you travel from Brussels to Bruges, I suggest you take a train ride where you’ll be able to appreciate the incredible green landscapes all in a one-hour journey. Once you disembark the train and head to the centre, you’ll discover the thrill of seeing some outrageously big horses and my all time favourite part, the canal. If you want to do a classic round of sightseeing Bruges, take one of the boats through its canal.

I, being a flea market lover, had an amazing time exploring Brussels’ flea market near Brussels-Midi train station. Antiquities, vinyl records, old books, coats and other goodies ready to be purchased were on sale. Thrilled knowing my university years were back, I kept searching for that perfect item to cherish and take back with me.

something to do with the fact that

Food Glorious Food

it certainly hit the spot. Oh my,

For foodie lovers, Belgium is very well known for its popular mussels. Quartier du Centre became my best friend when it came to shopping, purchasing souvenirs and exploring outstanding buildings. With cobble-stoned roads directing you to the center, every single restaurant consists of its local favourites and of course, mussels. For those who need a little break from shopping and being an overwhelmed tourist, I must say Belgium offers the best waffles in the world. I don’t know if the weather had something to do with the fact that I struck gold with a hot waffle packed with nutella, banana and some delicious strawberries, but it certainly hit the spot. Oh my, those 5 Euros went a long way.

Where to shop

Filled with fashion shops, beauty shops, and waffle houses, Rue Neuve is the street to be at when taking on the shopping experience. If makeup or beauty essentials are your thing, make a quick stop at Yves Rocher where you’ll be thrown into a world of aromas and scents. If meditation essentials is something you crave, visit Rituals where you’ll find natural products for the body and mind.

I struck gold with a hot waffle

Chocolate. There isn’t a single shop in town where chocolate is nowhere to be found. Cheese is also part of the experience, but the standing ovation must be given to their French fries. There’s this place in the centre of town known as Markt - they have the best. These fries are so popular the queues say it all. I was also thrilled to have visited an art gallery; it had been years since I last visited a worthy one and Belgium had the surprise of taking me through a gallery experience, all over again. Located at a very touristic point – also worth visiting – Belfry of Bruges hosted exquisite works from many talented artists, which were on display yet Steve Small’s artistic approach, took it all. Belgium is undeniably a place where I was reminded how incredible Europe is and how much I had forgotten to appreciate and revive the love for art, walking, taking a train and other mundane activities we don’t have the luxury of participating in.

Five reasons to visit Varna

Off the beaten path is this undiscovered gem in Bulgaria. Edward Smith gives us the top reasons to pay a visit.

W

hen it’s your first visit to Bulgaria, you should put aside any preconceived notions you may have about ex Soviet Union countries. Forget the Stalin-era buildings or the chubby babushkas wearing fur hats - these clichés are no longer a reality in the ‘new’ Europe! Although the Bulgarian coast is less well known than the French or Italian Riviera, it is becoming more and more a sought after place to spend a holiday. As part of a Turkish Airlines promotion, I was amongst a lucky group of people who were invited to visit the city of Varna and its surroundings. Not only is it the largest city on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, it is also the third largest city in Bulgaria – this little known Balkan gem has a lot to offer its visitors. Here are some of the reasons Varna should be added to your travel bucket list. 98

Resorts & World Class Amenities

Our stay was hosted by the luxurious International Hotel Casino & Tower Suites. Nestled in the heart of the golden sands resort, this beachfront hotel offers classically elegant accommodation, spa treatments to revive your spirits, a wide range of cuisines to excite your palate as well as its world class amenities. For those who don’t know, Golden Sands is the largest beach resort on the Northern Black Sea coast. The beach is really gold due to its yellow sand, there is a wealth of sporting and other facilities available, all very moderately priced. Wind-surfing, water-skiing, snorkeling, parasailing and mini-golf to fill up your day and hundreds of bars and discos that provide entertainment from dusk till dawn! Although the resort offers many adult entertainment it remains very family oriented too,

not like its southern counterpart, Sunny Beach, also known as the Bulgarian Ibiza!

It’s Cheaper

In many cases, consumer goods and services are several times cheaper than in Western Europe! A nice cold beer, for example, will set you back around 1€ at a normal restaurant, a real bargain by European standards. The fact that Bulgaria did not adopt the euro yet, but still use the Lev, with its very weak current exchange rate against dollar, makes Bulgaria most certainly the cheapest sea holiday in Europe for any GCC resident!

The People

Bulgarians are not only welcoming, but they’re incredibly friendly. They are willing to go out of their way to show you around their country. Practicing

English is important to them, so you will likely be approached with a “Hello, do you like Bulgaria?”

Historical Gems

Varna is a city with a rich 6,000 year history, dating back to the Thracian times and likely even before that. A must-see for nature lovers and culture savvy visitors is the Sea Garden (sometimes referred to as Primorski Park). The Park is not only beautiful with its flower beds and its quiet alleys but it is also the home of very popular attractions and monuments such as the Naval Museum. This historical gem offers a vast range of vintage Army helicopters and Navy ships. Among them is ‘Druzki’ (meaning ‘Intrepid’ in Bulgarian) - a torpedo boat representative of the torpedo boats which prevented the shelling of Varna by the Ottoman army during the Balkan wars.

Forest Safari

Media Group Doha

Forest Safari

Another must-see attraction in Varna/Golden Sand is the ‘Jeep Safari’, which remains a good alternative to the beach when it’s raining. There are 4X4 Land-Rover jeeps driven by professional drivers, driving into the woods and visiting picturesque villages on the way, discovering some natural gems such as water springs by the beautiful Bulgarian nature. On one of the stopovers we were able to visit a place where the famous Rakia is made (“rakia” = “schnaps” = home made alcoholic drink) - 6 hours of fun and a very unique experience ! Our whole trip was planned by Turkish Airlines, and I have to say they did a wonderful job from beginning to end. I absolutely love this place and cannot wait to go back. www.ohlala-magazine.com

The Cadillac CTS The Cadillac CTS is beautiful, luxurious, practical and safe. It also costs less than other cars in its class. Does this make it the perfect premium family sedan?

A

few years ago, if you asked any diva driver in the Gulf where their ideal car would come from, and almost all would say Germany. However, these days, more and more would tell you that a Cadillac is the car they’d drive. This is because the American premium luxury brand has had one objective in mind over the last decade, and that is to fight their way up to sit amongst the German big three of BMW, Mercedes and Audi. The Cadillac CTS is the result of that ambition. In order to achieve their aims, Cadillac had to match the Germans on each of the following criteria: Style (both inside and out), quality, driving experience and technology. So, how does it fare? Well, on style it certainly does the trick! It is an extremely handsome car, with modern lines, an athletic stance, and the premium bling comes courtesy of those big chrome alloy wheels and the LED daytime running lights on the headlamps and framing the front air scoops. Inside, the good news continues. With padded leather surfaces and chrome detailing everywhere, it’s supremely stylish, and manages to be both modern and elegant. Comfort is key too, and the CTS doesn’t disappoint there either, with comfortable leather seats boasting both hot and cold ventilation. Everything looks and feels extremely solid and well-build, so the quality is definitely there too. On the technology side of things, they first had to overcome the historic notion that American cars can’t turn corners. They did this pretty emphatically when in 2009 the CTS-V sedan broke the lap time record on the Nurburgring for a production sedan on factory tyres. So, we know that Cadillacs can handle 100 www.ohlala-magazine.com

Diva Drives

Behind the wheel, Sofia Graniello

well, but do they drive well? The answer is a resounding yes – the CTS has a lovely, smooth ride in addition to responsive handling, and even the turbocharged V6 version we drove had plenty of power, but was incredibly easy on the fuel, which is good news for the eco-conscious among you. Finally, Cadillac had to challenge the Germans on safety and driver assistance technology, and challenge they definitely have. It boasts adaptive cruise control as well as front and rear automatic braking to help you avoid collisions. Then there is the parallel and perpendicular parking assist, which basically parks the car for you. Not that we ladies need it, of course, but it’s nice to have… Then there is a raft of safety features including a protective safety cage made from high strength steel alloys to protect the family, no less than TEN airbags all around you, and electronic stability control, ABS with automatic brake-dry (this gently applies braking to wet brakes to heat them up so that they dry quicker), and even lane-change correction, which helps you steer back into your lane if it senses you drifting across the line by mistake. Overall, we found the Cadillac extremely impressive. Outside America, the Cadillac brand still doesn’t have the prestige of its German counterparts. However if it keeps making cars like this, it’s only a matter of time. And not that much time either… www.ohlala-magazine.com 101

H

ow did Coliac come to life?

I have always wanted to create something personal. After my degree at NABA (Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti di Milano) in Fashion and Textile design, I started with an internship which turned into a job at Stella McCartney. There I contributed to the development of accessories, leather goods and bijoux. After that, I had other very interesting collaborations. Coliac was a natural progression, as the world of accessories comprises many of these characteristics. Jewels or shoes can totally change one’s look, and they are both design and fashion items. Coliac is my grandma’s surname, the last heir of a noble French family who lived in the late 19th century. The surname was going to disappear, so I decided to give some continuity to this important family story.

with Col

There’s an abundance of shoe and jewellery designers these days. Yet, Martina Grasselli, an Italian creative soul, shows what it truly means to design bold, statement pieces. The eclectic designer talks about her “ironic” and “surreal” brand, Coliac.

artistic creations. I am fond of the Decò period, both in art and in interior design; Malevich, Russian Constructivism, Bauhaus and the graphic research of Sonia Delaunay inspire my creations. I try to transmit to the artisans and factories I collaborate with, my artistic mood and they have learnt to translate my feelings into actual creations. Before, Coliac was a bijoux brand only, but I later decided to broaden my perspective and embrace the whole world of accessories. My shoes are like white canvasses; therefore installing jewels on them came natural to me and this is now one of the most important aspects of my brand.

What can we expect in the new collection? My new creations are very ‘pop’. The collection has pink, blue, nude and fuchsia nuances. You can find embroidery, seam lines - the ones you find on rugby balls, plexi heels and pixelated marble prints. I am very proud of it.

Your personal style is very unique, how would you describe it? I like to wear androgynous garments, where one’s sexuality is not shown off. I always wear men’s trousers and my studded leather jacket, which is sort of my uniform. Some red lipstick completes my look.

Have accessories always been an important element in your creation? Accessories are very important to me. They can totally change one’s look! Metallic and decorative details are key to my creations and they characterise the jewel-shoe. The most important feature, however, is the harmony of the look and the emotions that I feel once the creation comes to life.

Where do you get inspiration for such unique designs? My brand’s aesthetics stem from contrasts. I believe that my shoes are elegant but also ironic, serious and funny. Inspiration comes from art, and different artists inspire me and give me the possibility to transform the emotions I feel into 102 www.ohlala-magazine.com

It’s a Chef’s Choice We had delicious, scrumptious, and mouthwatering dishes at El Faro’s intimate dinner. Located at the prominent Marsa Malaz Kempinski, it was indeed, a Spanish fiesta. Delicious Spanish tapas, salads, paella and other bites were part of the gastronomic evening. Head chef, Raul Cob, took our palates for an authentic Spanish journey.

Miss Ohlala

Death becomes Her We women seek one thing: immortality…

If Robert Zemeckis’ brilliant film – my favourite of all time – comes to mind, then, you’re on the right path. If you haven’t watched it, then, you’re in for a treat. Starring Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn, Isabella Rossellini and Bruce Willis, who all come together to portray a woman’s obsession with vanity: the fountain of youth. As much as I would love to talk and analyse the film (trust me, I would), I’m more intrigued about how Botox and fillers have become a beauty taboo amongst women – and sadly, young girls – these days. If you know who Kylie Jenner is (now self proclaimed: King Kylie), then, for sure you are very much aware of what I am talking about. Nowadays women seem to become more and more comfortable and aware of the power of Botox and fillers, imminently marking their calendars for the next doctor’s appointment. Many hide their procedures from their partners while others are comfortable talking about what enhancements they’ve done. Yet, is it OK to let 16 year-olds get lip injections to emulate celebrities? Perhaps some will agree, personally, I stand by my opinion of it being total stupidity. The more I take a look over this trending phenomenon, the more I notice YouTube beauty gurus getting work done – and 126 www.ohlala-magazine.com

it all begins to evolve into this distorted communication between young teens and women around the globe. As for Qatar, the more I visit the cinema, the more I see young teens with absurd duck-faced-lips, thinking it is the latest beauty trend to follow; it makes me think, how far is too far when it comes to beauty enhancements, especially at such a young age. With more research, I realise how little is left of real woman with natural grace and beauty. I’ve come to also count how many of my acquaintances have gone under the knife, or a simple procedure. What’s worse is they all fall under 25 years old. Coincidence? Perhaps. Nonetheless, the saddest of all is how we’ve lost perception of real beauty. Now, beauty is measured according to who is the skinniest; who achieves the biggest and poutiest lips, and who erases wrinkles the quickest. It seems that at 26, women are buying anti-wrinkle creams and getting things fixed that aren’t even broken and men seem to condone this. Whatever perception women and men have, I for one have come to appreciate my laughter wrinkles which don’t seem to get smoother with time – but that’s fine by me.
