elcome to the March issue of Ohlala which marks the start of the spring/ summer 2016 season where we’ve pinned the key looks to go for in a comprehensive runway report from Ready-To-Wear to Haute Couture. Having attended a number of shows back in September I recall many of the headChristian turning, jaw-to-the-floor trends – we’ve selected louboutin, Haute Couture our favourites and given you the key items to Spring/Summer 2016 stock up on in this issue too. I’m never short of adjectives to describe the feeling you get after watching a show. It’s absolutely rejuvenating. As each season goes by, designers are piecing full-fledged productions together (Kenzo’s iridescent set blew me out the water a year ago), beyond a primitive showcase – cue the cellophane (choice prop, Loewe.) Each brand’s aesthetic has never been stronger and expressive; it seems the relationship between art and fashion is cause for deeper consideration and celebration. The connection can cultivate much critical conversation into the long-stemmed history that has inspired these overlapping elements. And with that we take a look into the fascinating world of Vivienne Morgan, a milliner whose designs are, essentially, the most elegant sculptures you’ve ever seen. The very British tradition of women’s hats is becoming more of a mainstay on the fashion scene in the Gulf, especially in high society events and we love it. Elsewhere in the magazine we shine a light on Alanoud Alattiya – the creative soul behind, Tiiya – a brand that seeks to blur the lines between simplicity and costume-drama, her designs are whimsically fresh and feminine. And as is always the case for us (but we’re not complaining) we sample some more of Doha’s supreme food at Nobu, arguably the hottest place in town right now, and discover the worldly offerings at Doha Marriott’s Street Food. But what we’re most looking forward to this March is the arrival of the Buena Vista Social Club. Mark your calendars; this month’s going to be memorable.

First Word
Melting Spring Heavy sweaters and dull colours are in flux at the moment but make room for some cheery prints and vivacious patterns in time for Doha’s spring. But what defines spring in Doha? If you’ve been here long enough to spot the difference, it’s more about adjusting your Saturday BBQs indoors rather than outdoors, due to the pre-summer heat that slowly crawls back into our lives. It’s like bacteria – it never leaves until it fully seizes you– it suffocates you, smothers you completely. If you’re new to Qatar, enjoy our version of spring - you might want to stay indoors from now on. I, as usual, will remain wearing black. Local Editor

Ah it’s good to have you back, classic print! There was plenty of gingham on the runway - notably Victoria Beckham’s stellar monochrome variation that had everyone talking. Notice how you can go all ‘borrowed-from-the-boys’ with some slouchy trousers and oversized coats courtesy of Céline or how you can be more severe with a boxy number (thank you, Chanel) with structure all over as well as going for a sexy wrap dress - just like Diane von Furstenberg wants you to. We love how richly diverse the trend has become over time, allowing for all sartorial forms to play nicely together.

Lady Victoriana chic is here to stay, which is fabulous because ruffles are a detail we can easily get on board with – tea party, anyone? It’s as dramatic as it is elegant; it’s as iconic as it is versatile. This season you’ll find ruffles appearing along the hem, across the body (look at Marques’Almeida’s over-the-top bunching) and at the neck. Miu Miu, Michael Kors and Gucci have given us vintage romanticism while Jason Wu has gone for more minimal, structured tiers, Oscar de la Renta has channeled some girly and dreamy frills while Chanel are all about the bold, layered numbers.

Would it be too obvious if we said, Go Big or Go Home? The solid stripe story is a clear favourite this season with most designers letting go of their inhibitions and showing some serious lines. But it’s all about the unabashedly circus-style stripe that stops traffic but also the humble stripe that is subtle, classic and will never tire of renewing itself. We adored Chanel’s arrow stripes (hinging on Aztec too), fell in love with Dolce & Gabbana’s monumentally bold coloured stripes, swooned over Salvatore Ferragamo’s rainbow bands and felt our inner gypsy girl come out with Gucci’s bohemian vibes.

We’ve been going outside the lines for a while now, meshing styles together, allowing individualism to flourish and blazing trails with the most unassuming pairings you can imagine. And there’s nothing more fun than doing that with buckets of colour. Christopher Kane led the way with bursts of solid colours assembled together in modern art influenced slashes in fabric, while Kenzo, always the purveyor of killer fashion, brought out cool cut-outs with a patchwork of primary pops. Alice + Olivia added a Sixties touch with kaleidoscopic circles and Roberto Cavalli honed the chaos of colour with an air of norm core.

It only seems appropriate that this trend is in for the spring/summer collections – you can get away with a lot (even with just a little slither of skin) and still maintain modesty. All it takes is a classic maxi reworked with transparent chiffon for some dare to bare and you’re on the right track. Carolina Herrera are all about subtle peekaboo whether it’s in the sleeves or décolletage area while Christian Dior take it head-to-toe over a feminine top/shorts ensemble in the most tasteful and classy way. And Prada add a sheer element over layers of clashing trends for all to see.

From classic monochrome lace at Céline, see-through chiffon at Saint Laurent and layered over knit-wear at Emilio Pucci, the slip dress has made a huge comeback this season. It’s the perfect piece for all occasions, whatever the climes, so you can wear it alone or layer it. One of the single biggest design features that we saw coming down the runway and it’s one that I personally love. Shoulders don’t age, so this can be a go-to for all women.

No one, single mood can sum-up this decade, so we’re dividing it into three distinct micro-trends: grown-up-grunge, sporty street style and of course, minimalism.

Ohlala Spotlight “I buy silks and stamens for flower making from some local haberdashery shops in Abu Dhabi that resemble Aladdin’s Cave”
H
ow long have you been a milliner and what got you interested? I distinctly recall turning the pages of Vogue magazine in 1999 and seeing a photo taken by Herb Ritts in Death Valley of a model wearing a fish skeleton headdress by Stephen Jones. That image has stuck in my mind ever since. Years later, my mother gave me some millinery lessons with Rose Cory, milliner to the late Queen Mother. I then did an internship in London with the avant-garde designer Piers Atkinson. Being a milliner gives me the freedom to combine fashion styling with art and creativity. There are no limits on shape, style or materials when it comes to hats. How does millinery translate to the Middle East? Why do people look to the UK for millinery inspiration? London and the UK has been the centre of the fashion world in terms of millinery for such a long time. I think fashion in London is more extroverted and original and avant-garde compared to other fashion capitals and therefore people are more likely to wear a quirky hat, plus it’s also etiquette to wear millinery to a wedding in the UK. Since I’ve been living here, I’ve noticed people have been looking to the likes of the Duchess of Cambridge and Queen Rania and admiring their fashion style and hats and observing that they too can wear hats here. People in the Middle East usually want to start off with something a little subtler such as a headband, but we also have Dubai World Cup once a year where there is a chance to go to the extreme. Anything goes. How would you describe the Vivienne Morgan Millinery style? It’s all about wearable pieces of art. Two things are key for me: firstly, that I create original hats or headpieces, which sometimes appear to defy gravity or challenge the traditional interpretation of a hat, and secondly, that such headpieces are designed to flatter the wearer and complement their beauty. All the designs are underpinned by traditional millinery techniques and hand-craftsmanship that is the very essence of Vivienne Morgan Millinery. Where do you find your inspiration for your designs? From books on fashion, photography and design. In particular, Tim Walker photography books never fail to inspire me. I also keep a scrapbook of ideas for designs or materials, and sometimes I’ll look back at a design I started a few years ago and a brainwave will suddenly come to me as to what materials I can use to create the desired shape. Which famous milliners and fashion designers do you admire and why? There are two collaborations that never fail to inspire me, being
McQueen’s collaboration with hat maker Philip Treacy, and Stephen Jones’ work with the brilliant John Galliano. Together these collaborations produced such powerful, original and fearless designs. They were, in my opinion, responsible for the most memorable catwalk moments of the last few decades. What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant about wearing hats? Lots of ladies who come to my studio have never worn a hat before, other than perhaps a sunhat. It’s crucial to find the hat shape and style that suits you, whether it’s a large brimmed hat, an asymmetric headpiece or a floral crown with veiling. I’ve not yet failed to find a headpiece to suit my clients. Where do you source your millinery materials from? Whenever I travel I am always on the lookout for haberdasheries and vintage shops. I buy silks and stamens for flower making from some local haberdashery shops in Abu Dhabi that resemble Aladdin’s Cave. The vintage feathers and veiling tends to come from Paris. And I source the millinery hardware from the UK. Sometimes I even scour children’s shops for kitsch ponies or dinosaurs. What styles to you think will be popular at the Dubai World Cup this year? Crowns and Tiaras. They are a key piece for 2016 and they are a strong feature in my SS16 collection. It makes millinery more accessible. Dress designs are more intricate now and detailed with sheer paneling and lace so you need a hat that doesn’t overpower your outfit.

The Empress Of Haute Couture The enigmatic Alanoud Alattiya sets the record straight on the many things she likes to do. The multi-facet businesswoman opens up in a candid interview with us www.ohlala-magazine.com
71
Woman of the Month
B
orn in Lebanon, raised in England, Alanoud is not your average local designer. Having grown up amongst gowns created by great designers such as Christian Dior, it was only natural for the talented designer to set her sights on Haute Couture from a young age. She is currently at the helm of an Haute Couture empire, built from scratch. Alanoud is soft-spoken and eloquent, an enchanting mix. Her brand, Tiiya, is a cross between whimsical fairytale and severe structure and her spring/summer 2016 collection is heavenly. The creative soul is also a museum and gallery graduate so with so much success behind her, we are really intrigued about how this all came to be. First off, what inspired you to get into fashion? My mum was a fashion connoisseur. Back in the 50s she was one of the first handful of women in the region to wear Christian Dior. Then in the 60s after she married my father, her love for fashion continued, after my father was appointed ambassador of Qatar in Iran travelling was very frequent. She was invited to Christian Dior’s atelier, back in that time, it was an elegant affair; it was done by appointments with models and everything. She was also invited by other great designers. But me, I was raised in my mum’s environment and when I became a teenager in the 80s, I grew fascinated by my mum’s dresses – but also the inside of the dresses, I loved to see how they were constructed. Did you attend fashion school? No, I am self-taught. So when did you decide to create your brand, Tiiya? I have always been interested in Haute Couture, but at that time, it was not socially accepted. Actually, it was unacceptable to be a couturier. At that time I did my first brand and I didn’t put my name on it. It was way back in 2006. I became the first to export a luxury product out of Qatar. I was the first to export to London, Harrods no less. It was quite a moment I hold with great esteem. I had my brand stocked at Harrods: couture abayas. The way that I designed them were more into couture and it defeated the purpose of a real abaya – I’ve always gravitated to couture. Also, I’ve always been designing for my family, friends and myself – I like to wear my own creations. Even for my daughters, I’ll design something. Can you tell us a little bit about Tiiya? It’s derived from my last name, Alanoud Alattiya. And that is when I decided to step it up and make it more professional,
and I created a whole collection. I already had my staff; it was just a matter of sourcing fabrics as suppliers, mainly from Paris. How did your spring/summer 2016 collection come to life? The types of dresses I created are structural. I do my own draping, also the beading is strictly handmade– I’m quite an annoying perfectionist. In addition, someone approach me saying I should participate at the Dubai Fashion Week and out of a hundred applicants in the Gulf, I was the only one in the Gulf selected. I was quite humbled by it. That is impressive! So where did you draw inspiration from to create such poetic designs? Baroque theme and its form. It wasn’t inspired by anything, it was my own creation. It’s when I drape fabrics; it’s all in my head. I drive my staff insane! Where do you see your next collection heading? Can you give us a sneak peek? I’ve always gravitated towards Japanese culture. I have a little bit of Japanese and Chinese in it. You have an incredible presence as female power. What inspires you as a woman? Gianfranco Ferré. Back in the 90s, I sent him some of my sketches and I had just had my son, and also a time where being a designer was not sociably accepted. He was still alive and asked me to work with him and to visit his atelier. He has been my inspiration in fashion, Dior as well. But what inspires me? Perhaps ladies whom I design for, women in general; positivity and optimism. What is Couture for you? Couture for me is capturing a dream, and then embodying it. How important is it for women to obtain an education? Extremely. It’s nice to inspire young ladies to follow their passion and dreams and creativity by all means, but I think having an education is just as important or more. My friends and family have been incredibly supportive. I finished my masters in museum and gallery practice and designed, all in the same year. What does the future hold for such a creative soul? I’ll be doing my second season in March, hopefully a good one – Haute Couture as well. When I was doing my masters, I went through an entire phase without designing, without using my creativity. We had reading week, and in that week, I designed pretty much an entire collection. Is designing your favourite bit of being a fashion designer? Every time I design, I am wowed and excited with every creation – they are like my babies! I’m also a product designer and I’m currently on the wait for my invention to get patent. I also see myself continuing with my studies – PhD on the horizon.
“Couture for me is capturing a dream and then embodying it. It’s nice to inspire young ladies to follow their passion, dreams and creativity by all means, but I think having an education is just as important if not even more”

In light of spring, Ilias Ermenidis, perfumer and creator of Calvin Klein’s women fragrance, Eternity NOW, talks about his latest floral concoction and how a modern tale of love is enveloped in all the notes
W
hat were the sources of inspiration to create this fragrance? The optimistic, young, “fresh in love” concept of this brief was a great source of inspiration. That’s why the fragrance begins with such an explosive, joyful and sparkling luminosity. I was also inspired by the bliss and satisfaction of waking up to the love of my life, one that lasts through decades. This creative journey was pure joy. Does this fragrance have similarities with the existing Calvin Klein and CK fragrances? The fragrance carries the brand essence found in the original Eternity fragrance, which revolves around the authority of eternal love. Like the existing Calvin Klein fragrances, it is a balance between modernity and refinement, sensuality and intimacy. How would you describe this fragrance in your own words? Feel the undeniable spark of love’s beginning. Dazzling succulence opens the fragrance up into a glittering bouquet of dewy florals that unfold into an irresistible enveloping embrace of sensual warmth. The result is a modern tale of love that can be told from here… to eternity. Which family does it belong to? 90
www.ohlala-magazine.com
Bright addictive floral. If you had to choose three words to describe the fragrance, what would they be? Sensual, optimistic and modern. What makes this fragrance unique – what gives it its identity? The signature is delivered from the unique combination of the nectarine, aqua lily, and quince that give the fragrance a refreshing point of view. What are some unusual raw materials in the fragrance? The unique combination of nectarine and quince gives the fragrance its exclusive framework by revealing a luminous and romantic heart of addiction. What makes this fragrance appealing to women? It is the undeniable allure of the luminous top notes of the fragrance that hook you into a luxurious olfactive journey of modern love. If you had to present this fragrance to a consumer in one sentence, what would you say? Live, love, smile. Love is beautiful! What type of woman uses Eternity NOW? A woman of all ages and shades, sensual, refined, and confidant; a woman who plans to fall in love, just fell in love or is in love.
Beauty Insight Know your notes Eternity NOW has a top, heart and base note of Nectarine, Peach Blossom and Ambrox.
Nectarine
Found in the hills and mountains of South America and South East Asia these trees produce succulent fruits which have a warm, pulpy sensation that captures the sparkle of sunlight. Peach Blossom
The bright, fragrant blossoms appear in early spring and are known to be irresistible to honeybees. Peach blossoms lend a delicate softness kissed by velvety sweetness to a fragrance. Ambrox
Ambrox, a Firmenich molecule, is precious and rich. Its texture is silky like cashmere. Its fragrance is quite delicate, yet long lasting. Ambrox lends an ambery, woody and very sensuous impression.

Tried & Tested
Ahead of the new make-up and hair trends for the season, Angela Beitz shares her beauty disasters and triumphs over the years
T
his month marks the start of SS16 which brings an array of new beauty trends, from the brazen dashes of blue eyeliner glitter at Dries Van Noten to the almost mask-like swathes of blue eyeshadow at Chanel. Graphic eyeliner is also a key trend for this season as seen on Fendi and Céline along with spider lashes seen at Marni. While I love seeing these almost theatrical trends play out on the catwalk, what exactly are we mere mortals supposed to take away from this? Especially someone like me where one wrong stroke of the makeup brush can end in tears. While I’m always up for trying a new trend, I’m much more into simple, classic beauty these days as over the years things have certainly gone awry when it comes to my beauty endeavors. I’ve pretty much had every beauty disaster possible starting from the innocent age of six where I wore my mum’s Estée Lauder foundation to school. Even at that young age, I was already selfconscious of my freckles so I thought it would be a great idea to put my mum’s (way too dark for me) make up all over my face. All I remember was my teacher laughing at me hysterically (the concept of blending failed me back then) but I was always on the lookout for beauty fixes and beauty trends. The next one I remember was my first experience using fake tan.

“When I discovered dry-shampoo in 2007, it single-handedly changed my life. I know that sounds dramatic but I’ve never looked back”
Being very pale and growing up in Australia, I was constantly on a mission to make my skin look tanned. Back when I was 14, fake tan wasn’t as good as it is these days and I remember thinking I had done a great job of applying it (blending blunders all over again) only to find messy splotches around my ankles that rivaled a Monet painting. For as many failures as I’ve had, I’ve also had some triumphs. When I discovered dry-shampoo in 2007, it single-handedly changed my life. I know that sounds dramatic but I stumbled across it in a pharmacy one day (it was the medical type of dry-shampoo compared to the cool ones that are on the market today) and I’ve never looked back. Now, I’m not saying that hair shouldn’t be washed regularly but it’s just so helpful for those busy moments when you are short of time. I’d had many more revolutionary beauty moments over the years including developing an obsessive love for serums, the perfect natural looking false eyelashes to discovering great foundations and bronzers for fair skin. My best advice to tackle the runway beauty trends is to always keep it simple and to be realistic. I personally adored the sleek ponytails tied with a simple black grosgrain bow at Oscar de la Renta which can easily be mastered. I’m keen to try the blue eyeshadow trend for summer but I’ll be doing a more subtle version rather than colouring in my whole eye-socket. Whatever trend it is that appeals to you, my advice is to try it and have fun.

Q&A
Beauty editor Sofia Graniello answers your burning beauty questions from coconut oil queries to baggy eye cures London extreme, colab
Q: I have oily and thin hair. I wash it every morning and by the evening it’s already greasy. What can I do?
A: It’s a common thing to have greasy hair by the end of the day, especially if you are one to touch your hair frequently. I’d say, battle that greasy look with dry shampoo. Apply when needed – and when it’s dry – for a long-lasting and fresh look.
Q: I’m not the greatest at following beauty routines, especially after a night of partying. Any tips for a quick fix before going to bed?
A: It’s always important to sleep with a clean face, regardless if you wear makeup or not. But for party days, great makeup remover wipes will do the trick! If you invest in good ones, your face will thank you for it. However, on a daily basis, make sure to wash your face with a gentle cleanser. 94

Collagen under eyes patch, skin republic
Q: No matter how much hand cream I use to soften my cuticles, they always seem rough and dry. How can I prevent this?
A: Super easy. Every morning after showering, apply an oil cuticle to each nail and massage them. This will soften the cuticle preventing it from severe dryness. If you have time, also do it at night – magic!
Q: I suffer from puffy under-eyes. My make up looks terrible and no matter how much rest I get, baggy eyes are always there.
A: No matter what the situation is, always before applying your daily makeup, or when going out for a special event, apply a collagen under-eye patch. Leave it on for 30 minutes and you’re all set.
Q: Coconut oil is everywhere, nowadays! However, I’m a bit skeptical about oils. How can I incorporate it to my daily routine?
A: If you happen to have acne prone oily skin, I suggest avoiding it. However, for the body and hair, it will do wonders. Mix a little with your daily body cream to smooth and hydrate dry skin.

Kampai, Nobu! The majestic and highly acclaimed, Nobu has become the ultimate dining destination in Doha. With all the hype surrounding the internationally renowned restaurant, we paid a visit to see what the fuss is all about Not too long ago, Hollywood actor, Robert De Niro and chef Nobu himself graced us with their presence in the capital – perhaps the highlight of the social calendar for us in 2015 - being connoisseurs of Japanese cuisine and all. Now that the restaurant has established itself even more, we’ve gone back to indulge all that makes Nobu one of the most recognisable brands in the world. Located in the heart of the city at the one and only, Four Seasons Hotel Doha, it comes as no surprise that the Doha franchise is one of the largest venues in the brand’s portfolio. In addition, the demand is off the scale, hot. The venue is a true feat in architectural splendor with its tri-level design, giving you panoramic views of the Arabian Gulf. The 26,000 square-foot restaurant is built in the middle of the water, as if floating in its own territory – it’s a standout masterpiece. Despite the prominent, bold exteriors, the interior décor plays to a subtler theme, combining sophistication and minimalism. With clusters of oversized light bulbs hanging from the ceiling and elegant replicas of fishing nets draping the windows, Nobu creates the atmosphere of a harbor. There’s a real sense of space and ability to move freely without feeling crammed into a corner. For starters, if you don’t want to dine at Nobu, you can enjoy the starry bar both indoors or outdoors for that stellar view. The menu is brimming with bubbly offerings as well as great mocktails. The food choices are quite frankly, endless. The exotic names of the dishes alone are worthy of praise. We embarked on a delicious ‘Nobu style’ journey with a mix between Latin American cuisine and Japanese flavours – something that chef Nobu is proud of initiating. We started off with Salmon and King Crab Tacos (QR45), small crunchy bites, great to open up your appetite and taste buds. Happily content and excited to try the next slider, we were served with Nobu Wagyu Beef (QR 110), a juicy slider that hits the spot in the first mouthful. But we didn’t stop there by any means. If you really want to taste a mix of Latin America and Japan, we highly recommend the Yellowtail Sashimi with Jalapeño (QR 150) – it sounds like a culinary adventure, doesn’t it? It’s a fantastic fusion and definitely our favourite. Moving over to the sweets, here’s something special we recommend all to try: Black Cod Yuzu Miso (QR235). It
may not sound like a dessert but it’s steeped in sweet miso and complements the plumpness of the fish, beautifully. Our dinner was exceptional. From the luxurious setting to the authentic flavours, Doha’s Nobu lives up to its global reputation. And what’s more, Nobu is now open for brunch. You can enjoy a full-fledged experience for QR355 (without bubbly) or QR475 (if you can’t part from your Sapporo!) Nobu is open daily for dinner from 6.30pm until 11.30pm. Street Food The Doha Marriott’s Street Food is something we are always on board with. Still creating a buzz on the scene, Sofia Graniello sits down with executive chef, Oliver Weber to talk about their delicious concept and why it’s the perfect Thursday night hangout Weekend planning has become quite the daunting task. It invariably
involves splurging on very dear four-course meals at fabulous hotel restaurants – and while we certainly condone that, we also love the novelty of comfort food – favourite sweatpants on and everything. Hello cheap and fun meals, are you still out there? I, being a lover of food, am constantly hunting down great spots to dine at for something affordable with a great concept to enjoy with family and friends and a date. The Doha Marriott’s Street Food has been the go-to for all of the above since it launched back in January. Not wanting to miss out on all the action, I decided to try Doha Marriot’s new concept where they promise fun, a casual atmosphere and a lot of food without breaking the bank. German chef, Oliver Weber sits with me and chats about how he created this new and fresh concept. “Where to start. Well, I love travelling and now I think I’ve visited around 60 countries. So I do take inspiration from Asian countries and anywhere else in the world. If you really want to try their authentic cuisine, the streets are the place to go.” Street Food’s concept is fresh, upbeat and where plates, cutlery and the like are not necessary to enjoy your meal. You simply take a tray and go around the many live cooking stations which offer an array of dishes from around the world. There’s no fancy packaging either, it’s all in containers so you have that authentic experience. So how does this production of food get put all together? “That’s the beauty of this hotel, all the restaurants are lined up with this hall in the middle 98

and they are all from different countries with different flavours,” says chef Oliver. With its abundance of choice, I enjoyed moving about the different cuisines across a three-hour period. It’s safe to say I was happy and ready to head home. So whether you crave Indian, Latin American, or perhaps mouthwatering dumplings from Asia, you need to have a taste of Street Food. Street Food is available every Thursday from 6.30pm until 11.30pm at Doha Marriott. It’s QR335 for a bubbly package or QR240 for a regular. Both packages include water, soft drinks, juices, coffee and tea. For more information or reservation call: 4429 8499

The H Resort, Beau Vallon Beach – Seychelles This one’s got over 100 varieties of luxurious accommodations – suites and villas (with direct access to the beach or a private swimming pool) giving you total privacy amidst thick foliage. Invariably you’ll be Instagramming every second while you’re there – cue that holiday envy. Kempinski Seychelles Resort – Baie Lazare This one’s a massive chunk of luxury wrapped in a lively green crust! One word: luxury. The room has that local warmness, the atmosphere is so welcoming, the entire property oozes with hospitality – the staff ’s friendliness is unmatched, we could gush and gush but it’d be better for you to just go and try it yourself. 104 www.ohlala-magazine.com

Stressed as one can be
from hectic and busy schedules, I was lucky enough to participate in the launching of the Elemis Biotec Machine, housed by the prominent, Banana Island Doha by Anantara. The luxurious haven that undeniably provides a ‘paradise sanctuary,’ is also within easy reach from the city in a 20-minute boat ride. For those who love choice, the fabulous resort offers several options for a safe journey; it can be taken by a ferry, or for those who wish to explore Doha from the sky – and arrive like a movie star – a private helicopter may take your fancy. One thing worth noting is the deep respect for local culture, as the environment is alcohol-free. Intrigued by it, I immediately jumped at the chance of experiencing the resort and in particular, its spa, and the new Elemis Biotec treatment, which has just launched for the very first time, here in Doha. Exciting! As I made my way to the departure lounge, I was immediately greeted by lovely and welcoming staff members, who assisted me through check-in. Once everything was sorted and I was ready to jump into the ferry, I headed to the cosy waiting area. Let me tell you, the waiting area is far from dull. Equipped to your every need and decorated with a regal finish, I opted for some dates and Arabic coffee to start my afternoon in a relaxed and pampered way. With breathtaking views of the cerulean body of water juxtaposing the architecture of the resort, I kept asking myself: Am I really in Doha and not in the Maldives? Excited and anxious of what I would experience, I succumbed into one of their signature massage: nice, soothing, refreshing and nurturing – leaving me wanting more! For my next treatment, I thought I’d take to some Skin Mapping. The therapists meticulously evaluated my face by ‘scanning’ it on a special computer. When you swiftly get the results, you can easily match the type of treatments that will work best for your skin. And of course, behold the Elemis Biotec treatment.
Couples massage room
“With breathtaking views of the cerulean body of water juxtaposed to the architecture of the resort, I kept asking myself: Am I really in Doha and not in the Maldives?” It perfectly stimulates unresponsive skin cells weakened by sun exposure, age, stress and other deadly factors. The end result: rejuvenation of the skin. The procedure is a combination of ‘hands-on’ therapy and technology, targeting specific needs for each skin to optimise results. It immediately reduces skin impurities, signs of tiredness, and it gently exfoliates the skin. You can choose an intense 60-minute treatment to deliver quick results, or a series of sessions – you pick. There’s no doubt I’ll be going back for my next session, to achieve fresh and healthier skin. It’s the perfect experience to release stress, recharge and renew yourself. Spring Into it 1
Sun Protection. The sun may be the source of life but it also promotes the appearance of wrinkles and blemishes in unprotected skin and even increases the risk of skin cancer. Use a sunscreen with a high SPF daily the whole year round, not just in summer.
2
Finally, spring is here! Make the most of this time of year that promises renewal after those winter days. Esmeralda van der Westhuizen, Marsa Malaz Kempinski’s Spa Manager offers great suggestions to help you spring right into the new season with a great attitude
Goodbye Cigarettes. The skin of smokers is more aged looking and has more wrinkles than the skin of non-smokers. Smoking causes blood vessels in the superficial layers of skin to narrow, reducing blood flow and hence the supply of the nutrients and oxygen essential for good skin health. Smoking also damages the collagen and elastin that makes skin firm. The repeated facial expressions made when smoking also contribute to wrinkles.
3
Eat Healthily. A diet rich in fruit and vegetables has a high content in antioxidants that helps keep the skin healthy and hydrated. Avoid diets, apart from the nutritional deficiencies, rapid weight loss and gain affects the skin’s elasticity.
4
Sleep Well. To recover the energy lost during the day, you need regular sleep over sufficiently long periods. Lack of sleep causes bags under the eyes and makes the face look pale and tired. Your sleeping position also affects the skin: if you sleep with your face resting on the pillow, you are likely to wake up with a few contact wrinkles. 110 www.ohlala-magazine.com
5
Moisturise The Skin. Environmental factors reduce the skin’s natural moisture, which has to be replaced using suitable products. The skin should be moisturised at least twice daily – morning and evening – and after showering.
6
Skin Care. Showers and baths in very hot water remove essential oils from the skin and alter its pH. Reduce both the water temperature and bathing time. Be sure to cleanse your skin before bed so the skin can regenerate. Allow the annoying pimples that occur in the skin to follow their course. Squeezing them only inflames the area and causes scars.
7
Physical Exercise. Playing a sport or doing some form of exercise improves our physical condition and this is transmitted to the skin. Aerobic movements increase the circulation of oxygen in the body, which helps keep skin healthy and full of life.
8 9
Stress Management. Uncontrolled stress can cause acne breakouts and other skin problems. Exercise and meditation helps lower stress levels.
Expensive Isn’t Always Good. Compare the features and prices of toners, cleansers and creams. It is not recommended to switch between several products. Allow products time to work, as the effects are not immediate. However, do stop using a product if you notice redness or swelling in your skin.

llow me to get an embarrassing truth out the way: I got my license just two and a half years ago – five years later than my bosom buddies did. It had nothing to do with fear, but lack of time and urge to actually get it. But when I did come round to the idea (and not wanting to be a geriatric driver) my brotherin-law gave me one of the most prophetic pieces of advice re my delayed accession into motorhood: “do your lessons, pass the test and then learn to drive.” Pearls I tell you, pearls. I learnt to drive in London where the roads are choking with cars, maneuvers are tight squeezes and there’s very little mercy. Having a car in London is about as useful as not having a car in The Gulf. So effectively my driver’s license became just another form of identification, until I moved to this region and I started (one year after passing my test) to put my dormant driving skills to use. On an unassuming Sunday morning, I get a call asking me to test drive a Maserati GranTurismo. Casual. RSVPed in less than fives minutes, naturally. My history with cars is limited to my beloved, trusty and does112 www.ohlala-magazine.com
”The lipstick red Poltrona Frau leather is super sleek and elegant, the surfaces are distinctly shiny and the dashboard features subtle chrome rings around the buttons” what-it-says-on-the-tin, Jeep Cherokee. So as far as luxury sports cars go, the Maserati GranTurismo is a choice drive. Being used to feeling high up in my car, it was a novelty stepping down into the two-door GranTurismo – the seat allows for all sizes (me being bird-like of limb) to accommodate. Let’s be honest here, it would not be a luxury Italian product if it didn’t have a lot of stitched leather - there’s ample amounts. The lipstick red Poltrona Frau leather is deliciously sleek and elegant, the surfaces are distinctly shiny and the dashboard features subtle chrome rings around the buttons – all of which are pictorial and user friendly.

Key in the ignition, engine started and into sports mode – the boy button if you will. The aural qualities are exceptionally powerful and can silence everyone on the road as you blast past them. You are the centre of attention in a Maserati GranTurismo, trust me. I decided to go onto unending stretches of road in the desert so I could do some unabashed acceleration, hair cascading in the wind and everything – so naughty but nice. Now onto some technical bits and bobs: the larger 4.7-litre V8 of the GranTurismo Sport, which I drove, produces 460hp at 7000rpm and 520Nm of torque, peaking at 4750rpm. Its core is a 90-degree, 4691cc V8 engine that is fully balanced and uses five main bearings. The aluminium alloy engine contains a hardened and tempered steel crankshaft and its 32 valves are operated by chain-driven, double overhead camshafts. The steering and handling is so precise that the second you think about turning, the car turns. The super grippy wheel is beautifully light too. The Maserati GranTurismo is stunning in looks, fast beyond your wildest imagination and let’s everyone know you’ve made it. I could get used to this… www.ohlala-magazine.com 113

Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club is coming to Qatar for the very first time. Get ready for the rhythm of Havana nights as the Cuban musicians set the scene on fire The Buena Vista Social Club
was originally established as a members’ club in Havana, Cuba, which later closed in the 1940s. The club was filled with dances, musical activities became popular among musicians as a meeting spot. Later in 1995, nearly 50 years after the club closed, Cuban musician, Juan de Marcos Gonzalez and US guitarist, Ry Cooder were both inspired to start something special. The recording name, Buena Vista Social Club, became an international success which led the Cuban musicians to perform with a full line-up in Amsterdam in April 1998. Later German director, Wim Wenders was captured in film interviews with the musicians conducted in Havana that subsequently led to a massive success and was released for the cinemas. The documentary was not only highly praised, but also, received an Academy Award 114 www.ohlala-magazine.com

nomination for Best Documentary feature and won numerous accolades including Best Documentary at the European Film Awards. The success of both the album and film sparked a revival of international interest in traditional Cuban music and Latina American music, in general. The Buena Vista Social Club became an umbrella to describe such performances that encapsulates Cuba’s musical golden age between the 1930s and 1950s. Now, Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club is touring the world as the original heritage formation. Since 2015 they have embarked on their very last tour named, Adiós, which is bringing them to Doha as their first ever appearance in Qatar. Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club will be performing at Indigo, Sheraton Hotel on March 25. For more information call: 4437 0077

Cupid forgot about me
Let’s have a minute of silence for us single ladies who spent V-Day alone… forever alone… Why is it that every single breakup in my dating history has been prior to V-Day? I don’t know if Cupid has an issue with me, or he just loves messing around with my dating life. I’ve never had a proper Valentine’s Day (I’m exaggerating), but in all seriousness – I am always single on V-Day! Is it my ‘high-maintenance’ approach that scares men away, or is it bad luck? Whatever it is I want to set the record straight: I’m a simple and cheap date! Let’s start with the fact that I hate Valentine’s Day. It’s merely a publicity stunt. Ok fine, I like the whole romance situation, but just a little bit. Setting jokes aside, I am a cheap date. First of all, I don’t smoke; second, I don’t drink; and third, I’m pretty much content with an Applebee’s meal. I swear. If we go back to my dating records, I’ve had one proper Valentine’s – with dinner, roses and a horrendous box of chocolates. I’ll never forget that day when my date came in a full suit and twelve red roses. Disgustingly cliché. And to my surprise, we ended up dining at Salsa – couldn’t he pick something a bit more adventurous – or did he think the Latina in me would appreciate it? No! I eat Latin food every single day. Tacos are my go-to meal. Fajita is a verb in my household. Just no. Chapatis and karak would’ve made the cut. And it came as no surprise that this past Valentine’s I was still single. And to add that cherry on top, I’m recovering from a dreadful breakup. My Valentine’s dinner consisted of listening to a massive playlist of resentment and bitterness, thank you Adele. 122 www.ohlala-magazine.com
