ongratulations on launching at The Organic Pharmacy in Heavenly® Spa! Since your introduction in the market 2002, how difficult has it been to maintain the view that organic products can be effective? Daniel White: As a brand, we are different, as we are very conscious that there is a perception that organic products do not work. However, because our product comes from a pharmacy background, you can visit any of our boutiques, a pharmacist will always be there to assist you. It’s nature and science all together so, all of our formulations are science-based. Laila Asid: In addition, we have our stores where we have our customers who vouch for the product. We have made it through word-of-mouth which is the best feedback that we have received. When our regular customers bring in their friends and family, that’s when we know we have the right mix. Were people open to the idea of an Organic Pharmacy when you launched? Daniel: The company is 22 years old now and it was well ahead of its time. So, we have the credibility of being in the market for that long. Heavenly® Spa by Westin was very important to us as the ideal platform. It is such a great synergy, we are very pleased to be here. Which products did the Heavenly® Spa at The Westin choose from The Organic Pharmacy for Doha? Laila: When we created a selection for The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa, we had to take a lot of things into consideration. To begin with, we had to take

We included treatments for detoxification, various facials that aid in whitening, antiageing and of course, hydration! What do you want the Qatari market to know about The Organic Pharmacy? Daniel: They need to know everything! This is such a special, niche brand. For 22 years we have been producing organic, toxin-free products, and our line has all the active ingredients needed for skincare but without the chemicals. This was all handmade from batch to batch with love from London. Laila: We want everyone to know that we have a 360-degree approach and we see the body as a whole. So, we treat our customers from the inside and the outside. This is why this is such a great match with The Westin Heavenly Spa. We have skincare, supplements, makeup and we vouch that if you use our products once, you will always keep coming back, because you will love the effect it has on your skin. SAVE YOUR SKIN AS THE HOT TEMPERATURES START TO RISE, ANGELA BEITZ DISCUSSES THE IMPORTANCE OF SHIELDING OUR SKIN FROM THE SUN
T
he weather is unfortunately heating up after a long and lovely winter which is why now is the time to get yourself sorted with my favourite topic - Sun protection. You can’t talk to any beauty editor worth their salt without them mentioning about how important it is to protect your skin from the sun. We are all well aware of how attractive tanned skin is. You only need to take a quick scroll through your Instagram feed to see several beautifully bronzed people lying on the beach in the Maldives or the Greek Islands. But the hard truth is that spending time out in the sun can be very harmful, so it’s important to keep your skin protected and healthy all-year round instead of baking yourself silly. The common skin problems which result from over exposure to sunlight are melasma, freckles, darkening of existing freckles and darkening of uneven skin tone. Sunlight can cause harmful effects on the skin such as premature ageing, pigmentation and the worst of them all…skin cancer. These issues are seen more frequently and in a more severe way with fairer skins but people with olive complexions still need be careful, particularly with melanoma who can affect anyone. Using a high SPF factor is crucial here in the UAE. SPF doesn’t refer to the strength of your protection it refers to the time. So, if you’re using SPF 10, you will get 10 times the amount of time in the sun it would usually take for you to burn. If you use SPF 40, you will get 40 times. So, assuming it takes your skin 10 minutes to burn with no protection, using SPF 40 you have 400 minutes protection from that application. If you are sweating a lot or doing a lot of swimming, you need to constantly reapply. SPF 30 should be used an absolute minimum and I would strongly recommend SPF 50 and even SPF 100 if you are very fair and it’s great to use on your face. Sunscreen and beauty products have come a long way over the years and it’s great to see a lot of foundations along with CC & BB creams that now have SPF. In saying this, these products aren’t high enough in SPF for a day outside or by the beach or pool. Save them for office days when you won’t be outside in the sun as they don’t have the same long-lasting effects that sunscreen does. If the worst should happen and do get sunburnt you need to get as many antioxidants into your skin as quickly as possible. Products with Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Aloe Vera, Green Tea will help to stop the free radicals that have harmed your skin and help to prevent premature ageing. 62

HAIR GENIUS Tell us about how you started your career as a hairdresser? I was born and raised in Brazil by my mother and three sisters, and I always loved making them feel beautiful by doing their hair. I was born to do it! It was my passion from a young age. I then moved to London and worked in top salons such as Vidal Sassoon and Neville Hair Salon. How did you develop your brand? Moving to London earned me the opportunity to become a hair stylist to the rich and famous. But that’s not the only thing, I came to perfect sensational colouring techniques which combine high levels of technical skill and after cementing my reputation among prestigious client circles from all over the world, I launched my own salon in Chelsea. What does ‘good haircare’ mean to you? It’s quite simple – using the right combination of shampoo and conditioner. Explain to us what balayage is and why you think it’s become so popular? Balayage is a technique for highlighting hair in sweeps of colour to create a gradual, natural effect, which originated in France. There’s this freshness about balayage it makes women look so happy and confident – simply fabulous. There’s a sun-kissed look to it, which I think is the main thing with a healthy, bouncy sheen. How did you become the ‘balayage master’? I’m not sure where that came from! I am fully dedicated to my clients and
work with passion to make their hair look at its absolute best. My goal is to be ‘a’ master of Balayage. “The” master? – that’s not for me to decide! What are your tops tips for ladies who want to drastically change their hair colour? It needs to be subtle – too much colour destroys the effect; and gradual – lines look awful. This region is known for its harsh environmental factors - what advice would you give for looking after your hair under these circumstances? The heat and sun does cause issues, of course, but these are quite easy to guard against. I recommend to my clients, the first is that they carry a heat protection for their hair in their handbags, to apply when they are out in the sun; and two is that twice a week at home they apply moisturisers and masks to their hair, after shampooing. What to do you enjoy about coming to this region to do hair? I love the people here – they are very warm and welcoming – a little bit I think like Brazilians! I also love working with their hair, which is so strong and dark and full of potential. What’s next for the PS brand? My focus is on growing London and the Middle East; I am working also in Sao Paulo and in Miami. The aim of my brand is to be at the forefront of global hair fashion and to help to make my clients absolutely stunning.

Can you explain your concept to us? I am all about unlimited limits. I know that limits are limits but I am trying to be a bit stubborn and push boundaries here. I speak about the infinite perspective in life. I believe we can trigger this life to examine the idea; why just one of everything? Why one job, one family, one relationship? Personally, I believe we shouldn’t identify ourselves with any concept or idea. All we have to do is jump from minute to minute and be fully present. The advantage is that you channel a high, creative force which can always give you the urgent need of the present moment to evolve. That is the basic concept that I work with. 70

What is your idea of merging philosophy and art? I am someone driven with the life purpose of erasing consciousness and this is how I live from morning to night. When I wake up, I am all about lifting the energy up, expanding consciousness, because I feel like this is the nature of the universe; the universe is expanding, rising and it is all about growth. The beautiful purpose of life is a great way to be examined through art. It is my platform so I am using all different stories to examine different ideas of consciousness. I believe my country is pushing people to be better now and that is exactly what I believe Qatar deserves as well. Therefore, my philosophy is in balance with what is needed right now.

Tell us a bit about your journey as an artist… I used to be a yogi back in the day and I studied a lot of religions and I also studied the new era of philosophy. What opened my eyes was when I studied the evolution of human psychology because I saw a pattern in front of my eyes. The whole nature of our life is just an on-going story and we don’t need to identify any pattern. But, when you identify a perspective by putting them into groups, I feel like that is a form of attachment. From relationships to willpower, the human has identified itself to the role of being a master. The idea of love has been distorted because of this identification. I want to examine this idea in my art and have meaningful work. Everyone can take a bunch of paints and throw something on canvas to give it meaning, I wanted to have more a conversation. If art doesn’t help people to make them better, it has no meaning. I have always been interested in culture my entire life. My journey started when I was very young and when the age of the internet was introduced, I was thrown into a world where I could learn so much. My research started online, and trickled down to meeting people who would teach me so much more. From the Qatar Airways cabin crew to the British friends I made, I just wanted to be a curtain of knowledge for culture. Therefore, it made sense to be a part of UNESCO. What message do you aim to get across with your art? My boss gave me the title The Prince of Culture and calls me the 72

rainstorm of ideas. My art is about connecting people to their art, society, and their dreams. I believe I have a lot of things to say and do, so I am just dreaming of creating a cultural empire which is based on the idea of love and beauty. I need people to be awakened to their inner self and do beautiful things. What does the future hold for you? I’m building a module that is similar to Fire Station. I have a vision which is inspired by my art world where I have taken velvet fabric, and I have embellished it with glitter and crystals and I call it, One million stars. It represents my dream to inspire and empower one million people around the world who will in return inspire another million. Art is a safer place to explore, to understand life. I am grateful for Fire Station to give me this platform and I want to create the same for others out there. My people at UNESCO have really believed in me and I feel like this vision will come to life because of the trust they have put in me. What is your message for aspiring artists? I want them to be fully present. Be there and let the energy take over without judgment clouding their mind. The room was filled with a sweet scent that complemented the soft music in the background. I chose to keep the blinds open because, ‘Hello!?’ Who wouldn’t want this view?’ My treatment started immediately with an indulgent foot massage with sea salt which rids the feet of impurities. I loved the fact that Mimi was guiding me throughout my journey, which made it easier to understand what my skin was experiencing. After my heavenly foot massage, my Anantara Special massage began. Now, you need to understand the intensity of the following three words: ‘Cloud Nine’ bliss! Making sure that I was comfortable with the pressure, Mimi gave attention to every muscle in a different way. Her hand movements and intensity adjusted according to the muscle tension and it was an ideal match made in massage heaven. From my right shoulder to my calves, she made sure that the stress knots were ironed out. The oat oil that she was using served the purpose of relieving any muscle pain that I had and moisturised my skin perfectly, something that lasted the entire day. As an extension of my massage, upon my request, I had an argan oil head massage too! I am not kidding when I say that more than my hair, my soul needed this. I was advised to keep the oil on for a couple of hours and I completely understand why. Not only was I refreshed for the week, but, my skin was also smooth as butter. Anantara Spa is the epitome of luxury and their impeccable service always leaves me wanting to come back. The tranquility of the island and the unmatched Spa services are everything you need! Biolight Menu This is an intermediate version of the SHA healthy nutrition diet, designed for those who wish to use their time in SHA to take a bit more care of themselves than usual and learn about healthy eating and the benefits it brings, without setting themselves detox or weight control goals that are too strict. It is the gastronomic menu they normally recommend for their guests who come with other health programmes such as for anti-stress, anti-tobacco or rejuvenation. Lunch includes a starter, a main course and a dessert (if desired), whereas dinner only includes the first and second courses. This menu is part of a healthier diet and its ingredients usually include fish three times a week and pasta twice a week, while allowing for a sparing use of oil and nuts. 3. Kushi Menu This is their strictest and most restrictive gastronomic diet, but this does not mean it is less healthy. It is recommended for those who aim to control their weight or intensively detoxify their body, being
a perfect complement to their weight loss program. It has smaller portions and also does not include certain healthy ingredients like oil, baked flour, nuts, pasta or oats. A little salt is also added. Fish is only included once a week and the diet is characteristic for including a lot of algae and hearty soups like miso that help cleanse the body and provide energy and vitality. “A deluxe room in a suite with a superb environment”. The Deluxe Suite (70m2) is equipped with the latest technology and the best services. A 70 m2 room carefully designed so that their guests enjoy a pleasant and ideal stay. Their Deluxe Suite has numerous services available that adapt to the requirements of each and every person. Every night I enjoyed a ‘turn-down’ service that witnessed my room transformed to my specific needs, including the TV location, mattress and pillow - not to forget the amazing in-house fragrances of lavender and lemongrass. I had some of the best sleep in a long while, which I attributed to the excellent spring mattress, 700 thread count sheets, black-out curtains, and excellent noise insulation. Large single-pane glass windows in the room are designed to utilise natural light and immerse you into nature’s proximity. Every day I had an incredible sea and mountain view villa assisting me in developing a deeper sense of appreciation for nature. I was impressed with the quality of room servicing; every time I went back to my room after a day of fitness and spa, my belongings were always reordered in thoughtful places, with my personal preferences considered. WELLNESS & CLINIC The Wellness & Clinic area is expansive and spacious, with a décor that evokes calm across its 6000m2. With a comprehensive selection of spa therapies ranging from traditional ayurvedic treatments and oriental acupressure, to holistic anti-ageing facials and aromatherapy. Treatments here are an exceptional experience and the therapists and rooms are some of the best around. My personal favourite was their HydroEnergetic Detox Cure which is a treatment recommended for those who want to lose weight, eliminate accumulated toxins, improve blood circulation, reduce stress and recover their body balance, all of which I was in desperate need of! It consisted of a bespoke oil bath, followed by a seaweed wrap which
you enjoy as you become more relaxed as you are literally floating on water before you are ‘blasted’ with water to increase circulation. I enjoyed many aspects of Sha’s focus on wellness, from the body composition analysis at the beginning and end of stay which is such a fundamental part of a modern wellness programme, to pranayama breathing sessions being transported into a zen-inducing meditative state. All the therapists and teachers are informed of your personal goals or interests and tailor their sessions accordingly. You’ll find they really want to see you transform your life into a healthy one as they guide you into and through your own personal journey of wellness in luxurious surroundings with a five-star service.

For light snacks and meals during the day, the Pool Bar team will take care of each guest’s appetite, while relaxing and enjoying the sun. For fans of Thai street food, Soi Soi is the place to be; a lively restaurant reminiscent of Bangkok’s bustling street-food scene. For authentic Indian teas, Boulevard Tea House provides that and more in a cosy setting. Fresh coffee, dainty desserts and pastries can be found at Café One, the hotel’s deli. Amwaj Lounge, the hotel’s luxury living room, sets the scene with a selection of French pastries and afternoon tea prepared by the hotel’s team of French chefs, Executive Chef Guillaume Joly and Executive Pastry Chef Gregory Legros. Breakfast is located in The Kitchen Restaurant with a HUGE selection of savoury and sweet options, it’s one of the largest in Muscat and one of the best we’ve encountered at a 5-star hotel. We enjoyed a fabulous dinner in Bukhara Restaurant with very tasty North Indian cuisine and a great atmosphere. The quality of the food was top-notch and we’d highly recommend trying the Omani lobster – delicious. Lunch at Soi Soi is a gorgeous reminder of our time in Thailand – where we indulged in Thai Street Food – it’s casual and full of favours, but also very well-priced. Our last visit was Zale and let us tell you this – it’s like heaven on earth. With a lush outdoor ambiance, a local band playing hits by Pink Floyd and Gary Moore to name but a few, and, of course, stunning cuisine to whet our appetites.

WE MEAT AGAIN, MR PUCK.
Located at the super swanky, Mondrian Doha, CUT sits perfectly with their brand of high class and elegance. Wolfgang Puck has made a lifelong reputation as a steak supremo and his restaurants have wowed diners the world over, including our very own Craig Ferriman. Since CUT arrived in Doha, it has definitely made waves here in
Qatar, raising the culinary game and lifting the already high standards of a dining experience. Executive Chef, Ben Small, has been with the Wolfgang Puck family for 12 years and heads up the CUT kitchen here, so you are definitely in good hands. The menu retains the quintessential elements that the brand is known for anywhere in the world with some small additions that reflect the region and local tastes. For examples, sharing bread on the table were quite sweet and there was Arabic bread presented too. I began my gastronomic journey with their Spicy Big Eye Tuna Tartare Sandwiches with Togarashi (not something you see everyday) and Wasabi Aioli. It tasted Japanese, but also it projected influence of India probably due to the tantalising kick from the curry powder. An excellent small bite from the CUT to the Chase menu that they serve daily from 5-8pm. A perfect post-office snack. Another of Chef Ben’s successful innovations are the Blue Crab Rolls served in a soft and sweet toasted bun with herb aioli and celery salt. The crab just melts in your mouth as you bite into the bun. As proof that local flavours have influenced the chef, we devoured a salad with roasted baby beets, pickled strawberries, dukkha and pistachio yoghurt. It felt a little Lebanese, maybe a little Turkish but certainly emanated a revered Mediterranean taste. A stand out starter that I’d sure go for next time, if not every time I come to CUT, is the handmade CUT Tagliatelle with wild mushrooms and confit tomato petals. It tasted truly Italian and authentic, which is rather rare in 92

CHIC Eats Qatar. I would never have expected to see pasta, or pizza, for that matter on a menu in what I assumed to be a steakhouse by the name alone. Chef Ben explained to me that it can be limiting to people if all you offer is steak. People have varied tastes and what one diner may want at the table could differ a lot from another. Here, everybody from vegans to carnivores can rest assured that they will be looked after. The wide canvas of food even featured a whole roasted Peking Duck carved up and served with bao buns and accoutrements to add at our own discretion, including celery sticks and hoisin sauce. It was superb! I should probably say something about steak. There are lots of cuts to choose from. They are most satisfied if they can cook it rare for you but they’ll cook to order, of course. I had a USDA Prime Ribeye Steak which has a marbling texture and therefore more flavour. I also tested the small Japanese Wagyu Filet Mignon which melts in the mouth and you could literally eat it with a spoon. Desserts give Chef Ben and his team plenty to be creative about in the kitchen. Whichever CUT you visit in the world, you’ll probably always find a baked Alaska. The team keep things fresh by subtly switching up the ingredients that are incorporated from earthy wintry produce to spring fruits, now that the seasons have changed. The toasted Chocolate Brownie with chocolate mousse, caramel sauce and dulce de leche ice cream is an absolute hit. My favourite was actually the caramelized pear crumble. It was very fresh and not too heavy that I found it the perfect closer for my pallet. The thing about CUT is that you don’t have to eat the whole menu. I tried hard to and still failed, but they offer a lot! Whether a post-work snack and sip, a one dish that hits the spot, the carefully curated business lunch or indeed a dinner with friends. If you don’t find anything on the menu that you like, well, then, you don’t like food. MISS Ohlala For decades artists have recorded a social commentary in the form of hits, tracks and albums. We have all had that moment when getting into a car or walking into a room and one of our favourites tunes comes on and both our mind and body react. The lyrics awaken all manner of emotions and feelings whether that be romance, reflection or empowerment. When we react so positively to the lyrics of a song, as if in total agreement with the message offered by the artist or songwriter, why do we seem so reluctant to transpose these positive messages into our actions and everyday life? Particularly in terms of empowerment, tolerance and kindness. In 1985 two formidable females Aretha Franklin and Annie Lennox belted out the following lines, “Now this is a song to celebrate, the conscious liberation of the female state, mothers, daughters and their daughters too, woman to woman we’re singin’ with you.” You may very well have tapped your foot to this, hummed along or taken to the dancefloor, arms aloft celebrating every line. Sadly as a social demographic we have subconsciously added lines to the song such as ‘we’ll use social media to criticise, embarrass and shame you if you become too confident or too beautiful, or in some cases for absolutely no reason at all. We’ll criticise your size, your hair colour and your ethnicity’ . At some point, as women particularly, we lose the passion aroused in us by lyrics such as these and instead of celebrating strong, successful women we attack them and try to deflate their dreams as opposed to raising them up beyond expectation. I hold my hands up and admit somewhat shamefully that I know I have done this at some point, even if that means just chuckling in agreement. The same is true of quotes that we might read in novels, see displayed on posters or in our news feeds on Social Media. If you’re like me then you might ‘share’ or copy and paste these in a post, confirming your commitment to the message encapsulated in the words or phrase; almost like a personal mission statement for how you intend to conduct yourself in future. ‘If you can choose to be anything at all then choose to be kind’ - this is, and will always been one of my favourite quotes and I am certain that as you read this you are bringing your very own mantra to mind. After celebrating our agreement with the message on social media how often do we proactively act it out? In reality we should always choose to be kind, to lift up those around us and share our good fortune, but, in the modern world this is often lost or forgotten, sometimes as quickly as the time it took us to ‘share’. So the next time you sing along with impassioned commitment or hit ‘like’ and nod with agreement to the message on your screen, make sure that it stays with you and as Gandhi said, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world”... As opposed to just pinning it to your office or bedroom wall.
