Editor’s Letter The Holy Month is upon us, and we’ve prepared an issue dedicated to this special and important period of our lives in the Middle East. We bring modest styles, beauty tips to maintain a healthy complexion, info on how to improve the light in your home (this month, with extra help from lanterns), a destination with deep roots in the Arabic culture and a list of the best eateries to enjoy a hearty meal during Iftars and Suhours. With the Doha Jewellery & Watches Exhibition happening in May, we bring information on what to look for and a selection of stunning new collections from iconic and luxury jewellery brands. Our spa experience happened in a splendid location – the Al Messila Spa. The pampering destination has 14,000sq/m of pools, fitness studios, gyms, saunas and treatment rooms – an ode to wellness. And after having our bodies balanced and cared for, we indulged in a Chinese journey at Hakkasan to savour delicate and flavoursome dishes. We finish our April issue driving a high-tech car with no side mirrors – discover the 2022 Audi e-tron in our Diva Drives motoring section. Ramadan Kareem!

Long dresses with full-length sleeves in lightweight fabrics are the most stylish pick of the season. They can come in a modest silhouette or have a more adjusted top part and strategic cutouts. They add a boho flair to your looks that can be embraced with colourful add-ons or, if you don’t like the hippie style, you can aim for an urban feel by choosing minimalistic accessories.

Opt for pastel tones if you want to add some colour to your wardrobe but don’t really like vivid shades. They are pale and soft while maintaining their colourful personality. Go for creamy mint, millennial pink, baby blue, lavender and pale lemon. You can mix and match them or embrace a one-shade total look – tailored pieces are a good pick here.

WHAT TO WEAR

WITH: DENIM PANTS 5

2

This rough fabric has moved from a lazy look to a trendy pick, but how can you wear it in a way that it will stand out? We picked these Etro jeans to give you some styling ideas. 1. Even Valentino has embraced the casual textile and paired it with a white buttoned shirt for a simple yet sophisticated look. You can throw an eye-catching coat on top or pick a colourful scarf to finalise the look.

6

2. If you want to keep the look casual, snuggle into this Moschino sweater. These are not only comfy but also funky for a ‘back to childhood’ kind of outfit. 3. Do you want to impress when wearing your favourite jeans? Pick a fancy top and slip-on these Aquazurra red pumps for the ultimate wow factor. 4. If you choose to pair your denims with a plain white tee, go for chunky accessories to create an exciting look. Pick some espadrille shoes and this Johanna Ortiz necklace for a cool summer outfit. 5. Mini dresses are trendy this season, and if you don’t feel comfortable wearing them on their own, they can work really well as a top. Pick a pair of trainers or wedges to complement the look. This piece is from Max&Co. spring and summer collection. 6. If you want to be bold and release the fashionista in you, go for the double denim style, just like Dakota Johnson. Often seen as a faux pas, this style has changed its status by conquering the hearts of many it-girls out there. 26

Blooming With Confidence The Italian brand Dolce&Gabbana presents its DG Sunrise Special Collection inspired by nature – a capsule that brings unique picks for the month of Ramadan.

B

right sunlight, precious stones and intricate flowers are the main elements used in this feminine collection. Floral prints on chromatic palettes are reminiscent of natural gems such as jade green, aquamarine and rose quartz. The pieces are constructed in flowing chiffon dresses, poplin shirts and charmeuse blouses, recalling the elegance of decorated foulards. The same eye-catching patterns also cover more casual garments such as printed T-shirts, leggings and comfortable sweatshirts. For impressive accents, the capsule brings dazzling accessories. The Portofino trainers come with gold details, leather mules feature all-over thermos-strass, and burgundy calfskin slingbacks flaunt a golden metal DG logo. The exact shades are proposed on the iconic Sicily and DG

Logo bags, while embellished with multi-coloured crystal details. The items dedicated to men’s wardrobes are inspired by the warm hues of earth and gems, interwoven with the iconic graphic element of the DG logo. Sand, garnet red, tan leather, terracotta and carnelian orange paint the items with sporty yet essential silhouettes. Refined fabrics and designs such as pique polo shirts, linen shorts, silk shirts, T-shirts in jersey with jacquard details, rubberised applications and all-over prints make up the line. The logo pattern accentuates accessories to highlight a distinctive character, such as the Portofino and NS1 sneakers and coordinated hats. The DG Sunrise Special Collection is available at select Dolce&Gabbana boutiques and online at dolcegabbana.com.

Brand partnerships result in meaningful and exciting collections, and our news roundup brings some of the latest collaborations. An exhibition and an exciting fashion project are also in the lineup.

Stylish Leisurewear

ROKSANDA X FILA is the encounter between two very different identities creating unexpected and authentic pieces. Roksanda Ilincic founded her label more than 15 years ago using architectural shapes and unique use of colour. The autumn and winter 2022 collection with FILA blends the fashion label’s artistic sense of feminine empowerment with sport-style pragmatism. The collection revolves around big duvets mixed with leisurewear. A selection of leggings, T-shirts and jackets are paired with padded bags and oversized moon boots. The colour palette: an idiosyncratic mix of porcelain, black and bright orange with notes of chalk, taupe and fluoro pink. “Growing up in Serbia, I cherish the memories of how much we all loved FILA pieces coming from Italy. This collection allowed me to give a new point of view on such a beloved heritage,” said Roksanda.

Gems, Timepieces and Luxury The Doha Jewellery & Watches Exhibition (DJWE) is Qatar’s most awaited exhibition of its kind, and the stunning show is back to dazzle.

J

ewellery is a powerful fashion statement – ask any style guru! Jewels are your go-to accessory, whether you dress up with layers of chains or keep it minimalistic with a pair of dangly or chandelier earrings. A passion for beautiful add-ons is part of the Qatari culture, mainly from its origins as a Bedouin society. While pearls were featured more than gems, over time, other precious metals and stones gained popularity among the locals. Today, Qataris wear jewellery inspired by traditional and international influences, especially for formal events like weddings and during Ramadan and Eid gatherings. Bringing jewellery aficionados, aspiring designers and global brands together under one roof, DJWE is set to take place from May 9 to 13 at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre in a safe, COVID-compliant environment. The exhibition has been

at the forefront of Qatar’s most elite business events for 17 years. A platform bringing luxury and unique craftsmanship from across the world together, DJWE will host new and international luxury brands in addition to those in the previous editions. This year’s exhibition features a pavilion for young Qatari designers, workshops by De Beers on the Art of Rarity, Objectif Horlogerie (watchmaking) and the Qatar Watch Club. You can also expect to see exceptional pieces that truly reflect the country’s cultural heritage. In past editions, DJWE has attracted over a 100 top designers from 14 countries and close to 35,000 visitors from 175 countries. @visitqatar

he collection gives the Made in Italy-style jewellery fans precious lifelong objects that they can wear, experience and pass on. It includes a special edition of the Petit Joli collection, which flaunts lapis lazuli stones that showcase a vivid azure hue with touches of gold, symbolising comets and celestial heavens. The Joli Bouquet Lunaire line is adorned with adularia, the iconic white moonstone, combined with onyx, the quintessential black stone. A notable addition to this collection is the versatile bouquet ring made to be worn on three fingers featuring rose gold and a grey and white moonstone combined with onyx. The Ton Joli has been expanded with new pieces representing the moon, flaunting green agate, symbolising the Buddhist goddess Tara, as well as lapis lazuli and white and yellowish-orange diamonds. The collection’s exquisite gold contrarié earrings amount to only 20 pieces worldwide. The Giardini Segreti new assemblage features beautiful floral patterns. It includes an ear cuff, a petite piece that embraces the ear with a rose gold moon, a flower, and a petal embellished with diamonds. It also includes a ring for the little finger and contrarié earrings. Inspired by designs from the 1980s, the Luna in Fiore collection features all-new pieces with an amethyst flower detail. The curved shape of the items and the use of moonstones celebrate the moon. The Luce collection is inspired by the reflection of sunlight on water, with little diamond crescents and semi-circles embedded in rose gold representing the different phases of the moon. The pieces included are a choker, pendant earrings, a bracelet and an ear cuff. Pasquale Bruni collections are available at Al Majed Jewellery. @pasqualebruni

A Sky Full of Stars Garrard’s Midnight Wings Reflection jewels evoke the twinkling beauty of the sky at night.

G

arrard has introduced a new colourway for its Wings Reflection jewels, dubbed the Wings Reflection Midnight collection, with the theme of a darkblue sky full of glittering stars. Handcrafted enamel details the deepest blues and accented pavé diamonds make the jewels shimmer. The new additions include a pendant, earrings and a bracelet in a choice of 18-carat white or yellow gold. The creations are inspired by the image of the wings of an angel – the motif is a Garrard icon. A symbol of peace and purity, the new collection complements earlier Wings Reflection pieces in turquoise, blush pink, icy blue and deep red enamel. “We are always looking for ways to better serve our loyal clientele in the Middle East,” says Sara Prentice, Creative Director at Garrard. “It was during a recent trip to Dubai that I had the idea for a new colourway for Wings Reflection. The night sky was so clear and the colour breathtaking. I knew that enamel would be the perfect medium in which to capture it.” Garrard, based in London, is where every luxury jewellery item begins its journey. The renowned brand was founded in 1735 by master silversmith George Wicks and received its first commission from the then Prince of Wales in the same year. It was appointed the first official Crown Jeweller in 1843 and is famous for crafting both Queen Mary’s consort crown and Princess Diana’s engagement ring. Intricate Jewels The jewellery brand Roberto Coin unveil their mesmerising spring and summer 2022 collections – an ode to femininity.

T

he luxury brand was born in 1996. Its founder, the namesake of the label, decided to leave his successful career as a hotelier to follow his passion in the jewellery field. Roberto Coin’s creativity took shape through the hands of renowned Italian jewellery artisans, telling his story through jewels that become works of art. We’ve selected some of the brand’s newest creations to be added to your jewellery collection.

40

www.ohlalamag.net

VENETIAN PRINCESS The Princess family is the most romantic line in Roberto Coin’s portfolio. It includes Princess, Princess Flower, Diamond Princess, Royal Princess and now the Venetian Princess. The collection is inspired by the mystery that characterises the city of Venice with its legends and secrets. The jewels have a complex structure of twisted threads with a re-interpretation of the decorations found on Venetian palaces. The play of black and white diamonds evokes a vision of the faint lights of the streetlamps as they reflect off the dark waters of Venice’s canals. BLACK JADE The designs of this line carry a vintage style with a soft and asymmetrical structure but with modern innovative cuts and density of colours. The stones used are the stunning black jade, green agate and mother of pearl. Each gem in the collection is cut by hand in a re-interpretation of traditional craftsmanship. Like a custom-tailored garment, the gold is hand wrought to adhere perfectly to the stones. A combination of classic taste and contemporary minimalism.

ART DECÒ This line embodies the severity of geometrics and the intensity of precious stones proposed in unusual and original combinations. It is best described by its zig-zagging lines, wide curves, pointed angles and soft tassels. The correlation to the Art Decò style is evident in the collection’s design. The rings evoke the symmetries of the era’s buildings, while the vibrant colour combinations break the classic rules of harmony.

It’s a Complex-ion

MATTER

The Holy Month can be a good time to take care of your skin and, if you embrace fasting during this period, there are a few tricks that can help you deal with a change in your complexion. 48

www.ohlalamag.net

BEAUTY

T

he month of Ramadan is the ideal time to press pause and give your skin some rest. Take a break from make-up, drink plenty of water and get enough sleep. If you choose to fast, treatments absorbed by the skin get the green light to be used throughout the day. They can become an ally during this time when your complexion can suffer from the change in your regular habits. We’ve rounded up some must-have products to add to or amp up your beauty routine during this special period.

Column

MOISTURISER It would be best to keep up with your skincare routine that ideally involves the basics such as cleansing, toning, and moisturising in the am and pm hours. During this month, pay extra attention to keeping your complexion hydrated. If you are fasting and notice that your skin is feeling dryer, opt for a richer product during this period to help your skin. Hydration is key and having a rich nourishing layer to protect and fight external agents is an assertive choice to succeed in this task. To keep moisture in and prevent dryness, The American Academy of Dermatology recommends staying away from abrasive scrub brushes and bath sponges that can damage the skin’s surface. You should also pat your face gently with a towel and moisturise immediately after washing. To trap the water in, it is important that creams and lotions are applied within minutes of drying off.

EYE AREA Dark circles – you might already suffer from this condition, or it might happen when you don’t sleep enough. Lack of sleep might occur during this period due to less shut-eye than usual. To help you fight dark circles, look for products that contain caffeine or vitamin K, these ingredients help with circulation resulting in lightening of the area. According to the website Medical News Today, vitamin C can boost collagen production. Increasing collagen production under the eyes helps blood flow in the area. Together with your chosen cream, apply a soft massage. Puffiness is another unwanted result of irregular sleeping patterns, and to reduce puffy eyes, use a jade roller or cold patches to reduce eye-area swelling.

SUNSCREEN Your outings will most probably occur during the night; however, it is still essential to apply sunscreen even if you are only staying inside during the day. If you are sitting by a window or spending long hours in front of your computer screen, you are exposing yourself to potentially skin-damaging light. According to Anna Chien, a dermatologist from Johns Hopkins Medicine, if you are mostly indoors and sit away from windows, you might not need a second application. However, it is important to apply the product during your morning routine.

LIPS Dry and chapped lips are common during this period, and constant licking is not a solution to moisten them; it only creates more dryness when the water evaporates. One of the ways to keep your lips healthy is to increase your water intake during the non-fasting period or if you are not fasting, be more conscious about drinking more water throughout the day. You can also exfoliate them twice a week with a gentle product. A good scrub will contain moisturising and active agents to remove the dead cells. Let the scrub absorb into your lips by leaving it for a couple of minutes, and then remove it with lukewarm water. Keeping a lip balm always close is also a way of helping to lock in moisture. The Houston Methodist Leading Medicine recommends a thick ointment such as petroleum jelly or paraffin-based lip balm to seal in the water longer than waxes or oils. www.ohlalamag.net

O

n my way to Al Messila Spa reception, I am guided through 14,000sq/m of pools, fitness studios, gyms, saunas and treatment rooms at Al Messila, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Doha. I'm seriously impressed. Tucked away behind the city buzz, it’s hard to spot until you pass through the stone entrance arches to this beautiful property. A retreat paradise that awakes my senses with its sophisticated yet calming and relaxing atmosphere. The reception staff and spa manager give me a warm welcome and they take me on a discovery walk of the spa. We wander through stunning marble corridors and sunlit atriums with comfortable full-length recliners. We pass therapy pools, rows of mosaic-tiled foot spas and beautiful hammam enclaves. We enter ‘The Worlds’, split into four distinct ‘hydro-wellness’ areas: Oriental, Mystic, Mineral and Floral. It’s an incredible concept and each world is unique in its design. I step briefly into the Floral world and find rainforest showers, flotation tanks and oxygen rooms, all decorated with lush greenery and bathed in rich green light.

We arrive at my treatment room and my therapist is there to greet me. Walking in feels like entering the presidential suite of a top-class retreat. I have my own bathroom, steam room, and sofas. There are two treatment beds and a gleaming, bubble-filled bathtub takes centre stage. Next to it lays a handwritten note: “Welcome, Ms Kirsty”. Despite its size, the room feels very personal. And it’s mine for the next two hours. After steam-cleansing my lungs of the city air, I shower and hop into the soft pink glow of the bathtub for a sensational soak. Bliss. I’m ready for my treatment! First up is a 30-minute body exfoliation using a Gold Rejuvenating Body Polish. The scrub is made from sea salt and shea butter, with crushed 24-carat gold and vitamin C. The gold, my therapist explains, has antiinflammatory properties and promotes cell renewal. Now, I’m a sucker for ‘good’ pain, like the pain you get from an authentic Thai massage, or when your muscles ache after a tough workout… and my body scrub is no exception. It’s a satisfying 30 minutes, all the while knowing my skin will gleam and sparkle afterwards. Even better, my skin is smooth as silk and a subtle sprinkle of gold shimmers on its surface.

After showering and wrapping myself in one of the spa’s beautifully plush dressing gowns, I hop onto a second treatment bed and my 60-minute, 24-carat Gold Hot-Stone Massage starts. If it sounds opulent, that’s because it is. Why gold stones and not regular volcanic stones? Gold is softer and retains heat for longer, allowing the warmth to penetrate your body more effectively. Sceptical at first, my doubts quickly melt away as I can feel the difference. With my body slipping into deep relaxation, I notice soft piano music floating across the room. The therapist smooths the steaming gold across my back and upper arms. Her work is seamless and incredibly soothing. The floral and lavender notes from the massage oil both refresh and relax me. With my eyes closed and my mind drifting on a cloud, she works her professional magic until my time is up. Large doesn’t always equate to lavish. But 14,000sq/m of meticulously planned and beautifully designed space, combined with a world-class, personalised and customer-centric approach, means the creators of Al Messila Resort & Spa successfully challenge the aphorism. It’s a breathtaking place and another world to experience. What are you waiting for?

Tradition Meets Elegance Inspired by nature, Selma Benomar weaves traditional influences and modern designs into her Ramadan collection. Over the years, designers have perceived and presented ethnic styles in new and innovative ways. The brand Manish Arora is an example of mixing psychedelic colour palettes and kitsch motifs while combining traditional Indian embroidery, appliqué and beading with Western silhouettes. Moroccan-French fashion designer Selma Benomar brings a collection of dresses and kaftans that showcases the best of both worlds. Her style blends the traditional handwork of Moroccan artisans with modern cuts, colours and fabrics, with 20 designs this season. Inspired by nature, the collection features flowery details, as well as embroidery, beads and Swarovski crystals, which give an elegant, luxe look and feel to the outfits without being overpowering. Each piece has a unique belt to go with it, and they range from more traditional designs in the shape of a cord to more detailed, embroidered, crystal-studded ones. The collection showcases pastel yellows, blues and greens, referencing the natural world that surrounds us. Fabrics such as crêpe silk, lamé silk and French lace are used throughout the capsule, which complements the flowy structure of a kaftan. Lamé silk gives the pieces a shine while keeping them light and easy to wear and carry when attending a family gathering during Ramadan or Eid celebrations. @selma_benomar_caftan

LET THERE BE

LIGHT! COLOUR CREATION ON PEXELS

The Importance of Light “Light brings so much more than functional illumination to a home,” says Paul. “It creates ambience and influences mood. It’s also an expression of a person’s style and character. Think about how much drama and influence light has within a theatre – it’s all about hierarchy because your eyes are drawn to what the designer wants you to see. The same is true of how you use light within an interior scheme, so consider what you want to highlight.” Shayma similarly recommends paying some attention to this home accessory. “Lighting is one of the most important elements in interior design. Unfortunately, professionals and homeowners give it the least priority. For us, lighting planning comes directly after the floor planning. That is how significant it is and should be.”

ighting is often considered one of the least important accessories in a home. But giving more thought to this seemingly minor décor aspect proves that there’s much more to it. And with Ramadan already at our doorstep, it might be the perfect time to rethink this particular aspect of your home. We spoke to Paul Nulty, founder of Nulty, Nulty Bespoke and Studio N, and Shayma Alkooheji of Shayma Alkooheji Interiors, to give you the best guide to this task.

Strike a Balance When it comes to the key elements of lighting a room, Paul suggests thinking about the function of the space: “It’s surprising how often lighting isn’t thought out properly, and you see a simple grid of downlights placed indiscriminately across the ceiling. As a general rule of thumb, use downlights sparingly and think about the elements in the room that you want to illuminate. Is there a wall where the artwork will be hung? Or scope to incorporate a statement pendant? The golden rule is to use different layers of light to achieve the perfect balance.” Shayma recommends using all three different types of lighting to achieve this balance, namely general, task, and accent lighting: “When it comes to general lighting, we want to make sure there is an overall distribution of light. Task lighting should be used to illuminate certain areas we use for reading and working. And accent light is used to add ambiance to a space.” “To create ambience and interest in a space, you need to balance the layers of light and create contrast between higher and lower light levels. This level of finesse makes all the difference – it brings richness to the scheme and enhances the environment for everyone that uses it,” says Paul. Hence, experimenting with these three types of lighting to achieve the balance you need for each room will yield the ultimate path to light your home just the way you envision it. White or Yellow “There are no definite rules when it comes to this neverending qualm,” mentions Paul. It all depends on the mood you are trying to achieve.

“If you’re lighting a living room and looking to create a cosy atmosphere, then use low-level warm lighting. If that same area is used for functional tasks such as home working or reading during the day, then cool light is more effective,” stresses Paul. “It’s also important to consider the colours and finishes on the walls, ceiling or floor. Remember that you perceive space through the reflected light of these surfaces, so enhance bronze, wood or gold finishes with warm lighting, and blue, green or silver finishes with cooler lighting.” Bathroom Troubles Paul recommends using focused and task lighting in the bathroom: “The key to bathroom lighting is considered vertical illumination – you don’t need as much light as you think. Avoid shadows by using focused lighting rather than a line of downlights within the ceiling. This means integrated lighting within cabinetry, illuminating beautiful materials and using task lighting around the main basin area.” Shayma also suggests dim wall lights and one single task light above the sink to keep things simple and avoid those shadows coming down on your face while making sure they are not so bright that you don’t feel relaxed. Halls, Stairs and Doorways On the face of it, these areas seem quite insignificant in terms of the layout of a home. But Paul argues that they “set the tone for the rest of the property”. He recommends using a mix of contemporary minimalist low-level lighting as well as traditional wall lights to induce a decorative aesthetic. “Often, the key to lighting these areas is drama, so a combination of the two works well as it enables you to use layers of light to highlight key features and add subtle touches of theatre such as uplights or lighting around artworks."

Ramadan Kareem For this celebrated and Holy Month, both Paul and Shayma recommend using lanterns. “They are perfect for adding ambience and can be easily moved around should you wish to experiment with your scheme,” affirms Paul. Shayma advises buying lanterns in several sizes and using them indoors and out to capture that special Ramadan and Eid spirit. Final Tips and Unfavourable Slips When it comes to things to avert, Paul says that one key thing to be mindful of is avoiding glare such as reflections or unwanted secondary views of light sources within windows and on polished surfaces. He urges folks to find the correct balance between novelty and practicality. “Don’t be fooled into thinking an overly complicated product or solution goes hand in hand with convenience – it’s far more important to design a scheme that is welcoming, practical and well-considered,” he finalises. Escapes

THE OLD

WORLD Known today for its luscious beaches, its sacred siestas, and its vivacious festivals, Spain is a country brimming with life. On the other side of the coin lies its profound history, a deep dive that offers a unique glimpse of the country’s Islamic heritage, offering a perfect destination this Holy Month.

A

MALAGA

ndalucia or Al-Andalus is an area that lies on the Iberian Peninsula in Spain. The space was controlled by the Muslim empire from 711 to 1492 and is home to some of the most beautiful Islamic architecture and vast Islamic history in the world. We start at Seville, a paradisial city deeply embedded with historical significance and known for its grandiose monuments. The Giralda is a celebrated icon of the city and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Originally built as a minaret in 1195 for the Great Mosque of Seville during the reign of the Almohad dynasty, the Giralda is now the bell tower of the cathedral attached to it. A visit to this monumental building will give you a taste of just how influential the Arabs were in the region.

SEVILLE ALCAZAR PALACE

SEVILLE TOWER OF GOLD

CORDOBA MEZQUITA

The Alcazar Palace is another treasure in Seville. Known historically as ‘Al Qasr Al Muriq’ (meaning ‘The Verdant Palace’), the UNESCO World Heritage site houses a complex of buildings, with magnificent salons featuring intricate tiling, delicate geometric design and classic Moorish architecture, as well as traditional Islamic courtyards and expansive gardens. The Tower of Gold, or the Torre del Oro, is a dodecagonal military watchtower built by the Almohad Caliphate in the 12th century in order to gain control over access to the town through the Guadalquivir River. A small museum lies in the top floor of the tower, featuring shipping instruments and sea maps. The historical structure is another must-see for lovers of Islamic history. A 40-minute train ride away from this beautiful city lies the town of Cordoba, similarly imbued with Islamic heritage and architecture. It was once the capital of the Moorish Kingdom of Al-Andalus, marking the peak of its glory. Its most prized possession is the Mezquita, also called The Great Mosque of Cordoba, built by the exiled Umayyad prince Abd Al-Rahman in the 700s. He attempted to reinvigorate the spirit of Damascus (which was overtaken by the Abbasids from the Umayyads) in his new capital. In the following centuries, after its continual expansion, it became one of the largest sacred structures in the Islamic world. The famous Patio de los Naranjos, or the Court of the Oranges, lies here, where orange trees still grow. Passing through it leads you to the prayer hall, where the familiar horseshoe-shaped arched prayer niche can be found. Looking upwards shows you the magnificent mosque dome, which flaunts a radial design of lines and pointed arches with beautiful patterns. A little out of the town of Cordoba is Madinat Al-Zahra, a historical site of 10th-century ruins declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Built by Abd Al-Rahman III, the fortified palace-city was the capital of the Cordoba Caliphate. It included everything from government offices and aristocratic residences to baths.

GRANADA ALHAMBRA PALACE MALAGA

MEDINAT AL ZAHRA

About an hour and a half ’s train ride away from Cordoba is the city of Granada which is home to many acclaimed architectural and artistic wonders. The town was the last stronghold of the Arabs in Spain, lasting until 1492, and lies on the north-western slope of the Sierra Nevada. The Albaicín is the city’s famous old Arab district known for its Moorish architecture, narrow streets, horseshoe arches, cármenes (Moorish-style houses), and its teterías (teahouses). Taking a stroll around this quarter will give you a sense of life among the Moors and the significance of their civilisation in Andalucia. El Bañuelo or Hammam Al-Yawza is a preserved historic Arabic bath located in Albaicín on the banks of the Darro River and is worth a visit. On the other side of the river lies the very well-known Alhambra Palace, which was home to the Moorish monarchs of the city. It was built between 1238 and 1358 by the founder of the Nasrid dynasty, Ibn Al-Ahmar, on a plateau overlooking the Albaicín. The park contained in the palace is dotted with roses, oranges and myrtles, as well as elm trees. The Puerta de las Granadas (Gate of Pomegranates) includes a statue of the American author Washington Irving, erected to commemorate his continual fight for conserving Spain’s Islamic past. The Patio de los Arrayanes (Court of the Myrtles) is a large marble courtyard decorated with turquoise-coloured tiles and engraved arches and adorned with a central pond surrounded by sculpted myrtle bushes. The Patio de los Leones (Court of the Lions) is perhaps the palace’s most famous courtyard, also decorated with marble, with the Fountain of the Lions blooming in its centre. Next, we come to the city of Malaga, located on the southern coast of the country. The city is most known for its beaches as well as being the birthplace of Pablo Picasso. But it also houses some of the most beautiful Islamic heritage buildings and became one of the most important cities in Andalucia. It was called a ‘terrestrial paradise’ by the royals that founded it. Perhaps the most prestigious gem of the city is the Alcazaba Palace, the most preserved Arab fortress in Spain, built by the Hammudid dynasty in the early 11th century as a defence fortress against pirates. The Patio de los Naranjos (Court of the Oranges) and the Patio de la Alberca (Court of the Pool) are the two courtyards the palace is most famous for.

e are creatures of habit. At least, I know I am, and I have a sneaking suspicion I’m not alone. We see something we like; we look again. We go somewhere fascinating; we go back. We’re wowed by a restaurant; we’ve found a new favourite. This is exactly what has made Hakkasan so successful. It’s become, over the years, a firm favourite of the Doha food elite, residents and visitors alike, and an iconic presence on Qatar’s dining scene. Hakkasan is a Michelin-starred restaurant brand serving modern Chinese cuisine, that first opened its doors in London over 20 years ago. Hakkasan Doha found an eager Qatar audience in 2013 and has been impressing customers with culinary distinction ever since. With its uber-chic private entrance in The St. Regis Doha, the inside is low-lit and strikingly modern, with an immersive Far East feel. Stylish Chinese design touches every aspect of the interior. Subtle, uplifting beats float across the restaurant and make me feel good just being there. As my guest and I are greeted, the blue-lit bar stretches off to our right where mixologists serve their signatures. The main seating area is ahead of us and we are led out to our table on the terrace, set amongst beautiful gardens and lush foliage. The weather is pleasant, the night is young, and we are famished!

Another habit of mine is to allow the experts to recommend, and Hakkasan staff are real connoisseurs – professional to perfection, with deep menu knowledge, incisive questions and delightful recommendations. A delectable array of starters lands on our table within minutes, and we can’t wait to tuck in. Our hot salt and pepper squid are ridiculously fresh, beautifully tender, the batter crispy to melted in under a second. Pepper lingers on my tongue, but it isn’t overpowering, just perfect. Then follows a Hakkasan classic, the crispy duck salad. This has been on the menu since the brand’s inception in 2001. And 20 years of perfection is impressive. Juicy duck with a crisp carbon edge to the fat, partnered with pine nuts, candied tones of shallot and tangy cress. No meal in Hakkasan would be complete without the Supreme Dim Sum Platter. While it was fun to observe my guest chase the slippery spheres of Chinese perfection around his plate with chopsticks, it’s far more enjoyable to eat them. Todie-for delicious, our favourite by far was the Langoustine Har Gau with black truffle, topped with caviar. Pure food art both on the eyes and the taste buds with its symphony of textures and flavours.

74

After a short break, we receive our mains. Swiftly delivered to the table is a grilled seabass with honey, and a side of pak choi. The thick piece of fish is grilled to perfection, slightly charred with a buttery centre. The seabass is followed by Mala Wagyu short rib – unbelievably soft, stylishly presented off the bone, and accompanied by pumpkin. Its rich flavour is complemented by our side of stir-fried broccolini and crispy seaweed. These are by far the best greens I’ve had all year, crunchy and fresh with that faint aroma of good health. When we think we can eat no more, out comes dessert! Just a couple of light dishes, our waiter reassures us, and out pops a coconut semifreddo with delightfully light coconut sorbet, and a stunningly crafted yuzu crèmeux with moist almond cake, decorated with miniature meringue prongs. This little gem is called a Spiky Lemon. Sweet, refreshing citrus and a fabulous way to end a world-class dinner. I’ve definitely found my new favourite.

O

ver the years, the OHLALA team have test driven a vast array of quality vehicles created by a wide range of car manufacturers. From hatchbacks to saloons, from SUVs to sports cars, from diesel and petrol engines to hybrid vehicles, we have tried them all. This month, thanks to Audi Qatar, we got to experience the future in the form of the new Audi e-tron Sportback 55 quattro. This fully-electric vehicle is a taste of things to come in the auto world and we couldn’t have been happier to get behind the wheel. A MODERN AND STYLISH EXTERIOR As soon as we laid eyes on the Sportback, we were instantly taken by its bold design. This stylish vehicle combines the refinement of a four-door coupé, the capacity of an SUV and the forwardthinking nature of an electric car. At the front end, the contoured bumper sits between two large and modish looking air curtains, greatly enhancing the aerodynamic efficiency of this e-tron. Adding to its exclusive look are the LED headlights positioned just below the car’s contoured bonnet. At the flanks sit illuminated aluminium door sill trims, whilst 20-inch wheels come with an option for newly available yellow brake callipers. A novel feature of this vehicle and indeed a new experience for us, were the two cameras replacing the classic side mirrors, an element we will cover in more detail later on. This vehicle, with its largely enclosed single frame, has a flowing roofline that leads the eye to both the rear spoiler and the prominent diffuser that extends across the width of the vehicle. Available in 12 exterior colours, this fabulous five-seater exudes both power and prestige, with its appearance alone evoking a strong desire within us to get out onto the road. A FIVE-STAR INTERIOR Once inside the vehicle, we were greeted by electronically adjustable seats with four-way lumbar support. From this ultracomfortable and supportive viewpoint, we could take in the meticulously laid out cabin. Available in five colour schemes, the interior of the Sportback is reminiscent of a five-star lounge, with an abundance of room and premium materials used throughout.

The generously-sized dashboard spans from door to door, gracefully incorporating the modern-look instrument panel, whilst the door trims harmoniously integrate the screens for the virtual exterior mirrors. Audi have achieved a world-first in using these virtual mirrors to replace classic side mirrors. This novel concept took a little getting used to, however, after a few hours, it began to feel like an improvement. Looking at the door mounted screens proved to be far less distracting than glancing out the window, with the screens flashing yellow whenever a car appeared in our blind spot. We found both front and rear seating to offer sufficient head, shoulder and leg room, with two adults and a child fitting comfortably in the back. The roominess of the vehicle extends to the luggage compartment, providing a capacity of 615 litres, plenty of space for a family airport run. This capacity can be increased to 1,665 litres with the rear seats folded flat. With fourzone climate control, ample storage space and several charging points located throughout the SUV, we found the interior of this Sportback to be a convenient and comfortable environment. INFOTAINMENT & CONNECTIVITY The cutting-edge cabin of the 2022 Sportback features numerous highresolution screens including two central, flush-mounted touchscreens (10.1-inch and 8.8-inch), along with a digital gauge cluster known as the Virtual Cockpit. We found the infotainment system with its clear graphics to be responsive and easy to navigate. This system is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. An assortment of deluxe optional extras is available, including a head-up display and a Bang & Olufsen audio system. AN ELECTRIFYING PERFORMANCE When engaging the ignition of an Audi one expects to hear the roar of the engine but, with the e-tron, it’s a much quieter affair. Being a battery powered vehicle, the start-up is silent, reminding us of the environmentallyfriendly nature of this modern SUV.

Powering this vehicle are two electric motors, the first is located at the front axle and the second at the back. Combined, these motors deliver electronic all-wheel drive, although it is the rear motor that performs the bulk of the work. This dual motor setup, energised by a 432-celled lithium-Ion battery, generates 664Nm of torque and a maximum power output of 265kW. This enables the e-tron to accelerate from 0-100km/h in a respectable 6.6 seconds and to produce an electronically capped top speed of 200km/h. Performance wise, we found the 55 Sportback to be both spirited and well-balanced. As people have come to expect from electric vehicles, the acceleration is responsive, whilst the traditional and regenerative braking systems work together efficiently. We experienced a deep sense of calmness as the kilometres rolled silently by, with the suspension of the vehicle adding greatly to the luxurious feel of the car. The e-tron also boasts impressive cornering abilities, with plenty of traction provided by the quattro drive. With a multitude of safety and driver assistance features included as standard, we could not have felt more at ease in this exceptional SUV. BATTERY LIFE & CHARGING The e-tron Sportback 55 quattro has an EPA estimated range of up to 446km. It can recharge 80% of its capacity in just under 30 minutes at fast-charging stations, with direct current (DC) at up to 150kW. However, recharging can take up to nine hours using more conventional 240-volt outlets. OUR VERDICT We found the Audi e-tron Sportback 55 quattro to be an exceptional vehicle, one that is designed for comfort and convenience. It boasts a range of novel features and provided us with a good sense of what to expect from premium car manufacturers in the future. Shining a Light Throughout history, light has been used as a metaphoric symbol across religions, traditions, and societies. In the end, we are all trying to walk on the bright side of life. Light has many meanings in different cultures. It can represent life, guide you, express hope, and show the truth. Many festivities around the world revolve around the theme of light and, during Ramadan, it is common to decorate homes with fanous – a traditional lantern that comes in different sizes and is largely used during this period. The concept of lanterns originated in ancient Egypt. One of the beliefs is that during the Fatimid dynasty, when Caliphate Al-Mu'izz li-Dīn Allah arrived on the first day of Ramadan, the people and children of Egypt went outside to greet him, holding their lanterns. It became a beautiful tradition that spread across the Middle East. In general, the word light brings a positive effect in facing life. You can find the light at the end of the tunnel; you can see things in a new light and enlighten yourself with knowledge or spirituality. Whatever meaning might suit you best, take this Holy Month to find your inner light or lighten someone else’s path. Don’t forget that even small acts of kindness can also brighten your own days.
