The festive period isn’t always easy and it can be one of the most difficult times of the year for lots of people. There are lots of people feeling the same as you this year. Trust me there are. They are hard to spot because they are probably the ones keeping quiet and hiding or they are putting on a brave face and doing their best to fake it and put on a show. . You aren’t alone and you’re probably in better company than you realise. Don’t be too scared of telling people how you’re feeling, you never know, it might help them to admit that they are struggling too. Give yourself permission to opt out if you want to. Want to skip drinks? Bail on your friends? Bunker down and hide away for a little while? That’s all ok, don’t be afraid of putting your needs first. You don’t need to feel that you have to or should do anything that you don’t want to. Traditions can be lovely things and are a nice way of people providing structure to a holiday but that is all they are and sometimes disengaging with them can be really refreshing! Want to ditch the party and catch up on Netflix instead - go for it! You might end up creating some new ways of spending your holiday time that become personal traditions that work for you. On that note, I just want to say thank you to all of our lovely readers who truly are the gift that keeps on giving. Goodbye 2019 you’ve been a good ‘un!

T

he story of Naeem Khan’s Fall 2019 show should really begin with its finale. Just as everyone thought they’d seen the last look, out came three surprise models: Pat Cleveland, Alva Chinn, and Karen Bjornson. They were once a part of what was referred to as the Halstonettes; Roy Halston’s muses in the 1970s. Khan apprenticed for Halston back in the day, and it was during his time in that studio working alongside the legendary designer that he learned his craft. The collection he showed, like many of his collections, made nods to his former mentor through the draping and the figure-hugging dress silhouettes. Backstage, Khan articulated that the politically and socially charged times we’re living in now mirror those of Halston’s ’70s. It seemed like he was trying to balance then and now, both in his heart and in his mind. He didn’t elaborate on the state of the world too much, but seeing him walk the runway with Cleveland, Chinn, and Bjornson it was plain to see that he misses those good old days, though of course he’s still moving forward and evolving his brand. The astronaut’s helmet is sculpted in grade 5 titanium, hand painted using indestructible paint to hint at all-pervading timelessness. As for the Red Planet itself, only red gold could bring to life its unmistakable hues. We are drawn into the dramatic Valles Marineris, named for the Mariner 9 Probe, humanity’s first envoy to our distant neighbour. The engraving captures the overpowering rock face, rising a daunting 7 kilometres above the russet sandscapes below. For this it was necessary to achieve multiple colour changes in the enamel. Unlike traditional grand feu enamel, obtained by adding different pigments, the orange to red and blue to black gradients were made by superimposing layers and increasing the number of firings at 850 °C. We become the astronaut. In the helmet, two white gold elements containing a black sapphire and two diamonds evoke the floodlights that light up our immediate surroundings. Against the skin, we feel the spacesuit composed of grade 5 titanium, painted white using an airbrush. Other innovations complete this cosmic timepiece. The brown Cermet

combines the lightness of titanium with the hardness of a ceramic. It consists of a metallic zirconium matrix associated with high- performance ceramic that gives the material its incredible brown hue with metallic reflections. The caseband is made of Carbon TPT®, well known in the field of aerospace. The hands and bridges on the back of the model have been skeletonised to evoke rocket launch platforms or satellite arms. The crown is based on the design of a rocket capsule. Even the rubber surrounding it sports the distinctive profile of a Martian rover tyre. Only a very small crew of astronauts will be on board this unique mission to Mars. The RM 52-05 Tourbillon Pharrell Williams will be produced in an edition of 30 pieces. Modestly &Style Changing the way the world sees the fashion industry, HALIMA ADEN is the first Hijab wearing model and has been breaking stereotypical barriers ever since. Our local editor ANUSHAY KHAN delved behind-the-scenes to discover more in our exclusive interview with Halima herself. 34

How important was it to be able to represent yourself as the first model to wear a hijab? It was so exciting but you have to realise that being the first is never easy. There were a lot of questions that popped into my mind like; what is it going to look like? What is a hijab wearing model? It is so hard to see yourself as that person, especially if you have never seen that representation. So, for me it was a lot of learning and paving the way for the next generation of girls to enter the industry. I want them to feel that if I can wear a hijab and still be in Vogue, they can definitely feel like they can enter the industry too. How was it like to be on the cover of magazines such as Sports Illustrated and Vogue? I did Miss USA in 2016 wearing a burkini and for me it was a moment of feeling like my life was coming together, it’s a full circle moment because my entire career was launched off with me wearing a hijab and a burkini. For my first ever photoshoot, before I did Vogue, I did a CR fashion book which was shot by Mario Sorrenti. At that time, I did not know a whole lot about photographers or the fashion world in general so I wasn’t really nervous about it since I did not know what a big of a deal it was. Although, after Vogue Arabia, which was my first ever Vogue shoot, I could not believe that I was a Vogue cover girl. That was something that maybe you would hear on America’s Next Top Model and it just sounded like something so unattainable. I was floored when I found out. One of my favourite memories would have to be on the British Vogue set where there were nine girls who were the ‘new faces of fashion’. When we got to talking to another model, Adut Akech and a conversation of camel milk got deeper and we found out that she was from the city that I was born in, and even the same refugee camp. We had an entire Parent Trap moment there and then! How amazing was that? Two girls to be born in the same refugee camp in Kenya reunited for the first time on the cover of British Vogue. For me that represents hope. Shooting for Sports Illustrated, a magazine that is so iconic, which features models like Tyra Banks, Chrissy Teigen,


Christie Brinkley - all iconic women have graced the cover. In 2016 Ashley Graham was the first plus size model to be on the cover as well and this just started to show the change in the fashion world that represented beauty goes beyond size and age. So, I could not believe that I was going to be featured alongside these incredible women who I have looked up to. A lot of these women are mothers and high fashion magazines have been featuring a diverse group of women for a very long time. I was so honoured to be able to just shoot and then to be able to wear hijab and burkini as well. Since you’re a modest fashion model, which trend in the industry in your personal favourite? Winter and Fall are my favourite seasons since you can simply layer them up! For me, it is not just about being a model who wants to cover up, I want to be intentional about what I wear and let my personality come out through my style. I’ve picked up so many tips and tricks from the stylists and photographers that we’ve worked with and right now I absolutely love the hat-trend and the collar. I recently did a shoot where I was wearing a cowboy suit with a clip-on collar – it was fantastic. I want to do more of this type of look that just blends in naturally with the entire outfit. As a model, it is not just about the fashion shoots for you since you’re always in the public eye and people are noticing the clothes that you wear. Is it difficult to find designs internationally that complement your style? Abayas are the key to that look. No matter how big I get in my career or how much I love fashion, abaya is a staple modest piece, especially for Muslim women. I sometimes pair it with a belt and get an instant stylish look, but again, that is more of a commodity for me since I grew up with it, my mom owns ten of them, and every time I go home, I am always in an abaya. Fashion is one of the things that you just have to play with. I have always tested with loose looks and layers since I am not comfortable in tight clothes.

How does it feel like to be a part of Heya Exhibition that represents modest fashion and do you feel like the world needs more exhibitions like this? I just had to be a part of this exhibition for this reason. I feel like modest fashion stood the test of time and has always been around and it will stay. I do not feel like it is exclusive to just Muslim women in The Middle East. I would be able to carry any of these pieces worldwide and I wanted to be more accessible to everybody. I like styles that are exclusive to all women and that is why being a part of this exhibition is important and I didn’t just want to come for the show, I also wanted to talk because I wanted to share my story too. I have a lot of girls here who follow me and a lot of the designers from different parts of the world are here today and I just wanted to be a part of that. @halima / @heya.qa

With Galeries Lafayette roping in the biggest names in the market, DR. MARYAM ZAMANI recently visited Doha to launch her skincare line MZ Skin and our local editor ANUSHAY TAIMUR KHAN talked about the secret to perfect skin. 42

t what point did you feel like a skin care line is the perfect addition to your profile and why? I actually didn’t plan for this at all. I’ve trained as an oculoplastic surgeon in America and then I shifted to London after I got married to my husband. There, I did an extra fellowship in facial plastic and reconstruction. I was actually trying to convert my board certification from the US for UK standards when I got to know that we are shifting. The news of the shifting and my pregnancy came the same week as I received the certification! Even though I knew this was temporary, I decided to do dermatology which was a compliment to my fellowship. I worked with hyaluronic acid which is found in our skin cells and is the main ingredient used in fillers, that are used to plump and hydrate the skin. That’s when it started to dawn on me that the journey is not about coming to me and having something change with surgery. It is about what you put on your skin and put in your body as well. You must exhaust all options before trying something surgically. Tell us how the idea of a skin care line came into being My mother gave me my first moisturiser, which was a tinted moisturiser, and that is the first time I feel like I discovered skincare. It became a part of my ritual to have a proper skincare routine and that’s how it began at the age of 14-15 for me. Even my friends told me I always talked about skincare. Fast forward to a few years later and I was all in for this skincare regime. I tested a lot of creams in the market and I kept trying new brands. I couldn’t use certain brands because they felt like medicine that I was applying something that strong to my skin. So, I started experimenting with other brands and started adding my own ingredients to certain products. Then, I took it a step further to which my husband encouraged me to take some for my office too. It started off that organically and it took almost 2 years to work on my products. I was introduced to a buyer at Harrods who loved my concept. It was all about revealing, enhancing and protecting the skin and I was approached even before I started proper production. That was a huge boost in my confidence! I wanted to be free from any gimmicks and I wanted an environmentally friendly product. I wanted to be practical and simple, irrespective of loving the ritual. I had all these points in my mind that I wanted to achieve and that’s exactly how I made the products. I wanted it to be girly, so I chose pink and golden packaging, I wanted it to be the perfect size so that the product did not go to waste either, and since I faced pigmentation issues, that was my prior concern for this skincare line. I made sure that I wasn’t using compositions just for the sake of it and have clinically proven products. My Cinderella moment came in 2016 when I officially launched at Harrods! We are 3 years old this month and this launch at Galeries Lafayette comes at the perfect time of celebration. What is the one beauty/skincare trend you are not in favour of ? For me, the most important thing is to have informed decisions. I love influencers and that title itself has a lot of weightage. But everyone needs to have a responsible source feeding you the right information.

I am not too big on the ‘do it yourself ’ technique that is widespread now because of this reason. I am also in favour of education, so the one thing that worries me is when people say that they would not go for a certain product because it is not natural but to be fair, anything that lasts more than 10 days in your cupboard has preservatives. So, you need to be educated on this topic. In our digital world, certain trends will keep being promoted and as a doctor, this worries me a lot. We are all looking for ‘the cure’ and we are willing to accept things that are not even true just to find ‘the answer’. Another trend I do not like are subscription boxes because that is not the way to go about skincare. Not everyone has the skin that will take any product and do wonders. You end up paying more eventually and you need to know whatever you are putting on your skin is suitable or not. You tackle various issues for skin on a daily basis - which is your most trusted secret go-to product? Truthfully, all of the products have something special to offer. Since our motto is to reveal, enhance and protect the skin, we have products that focus on all of these ideologies. Since our products are animal cruelty free, we have two non-vegan products which are Rest and Revive and Non-Replenish & Restore. These two have placenta stem cells from sheep and plants. I felt like placenta stem cells would be tricky for my consumer but we found out that people who tried it cannot live without it! That would be the first and the second one would be the Brighten & Perfect which is a 10% vitamin C capsulated, that doesn’t cause irritation but decreases the pigmentation almost 40% when its used twice a day. It is a power-house ingredient for sure! How does it feel to have the biggest names in the industry like Gwyneth Paltrow, Arizona Muse, Selma Blair and Princess Charlene of Monaco, endorse your skin care brand? I feel incredibly honoured to have and see the patients that I have today 44

because it means that they trust my opinion and I am absolutely humbled by it. I work really hard and try to provide the best that I can and actually make a product for myself first before creating for the market. It is my passion that I try to bring to life. So, I feel like when you make something with a vision, no matter how small, it definitely shows you the best results. What gives you the edge in the local market in Qatar by introducing your line here? For here, because of the humidity and heat, it is important to make sure that you do the reveal and protect part of the process really well. I have a trio, that includes a cleanser which will help to remove the oil, pollution and debris on the face without drying the skin. The second product would be the Vitamin C Brighten & Protect because it protects you from the sun. There is a myth that says you should not use vitamin C in the sun and I would like to debunk that because it is a shield from UV damage and I highly recommend everyone to use it. Then, the third step is a treatment, which you can perform at home, called the Radiance & Renewal, which is packed with different types of acids that lightly exfoliate and de-clog pores. So, I think these few things should be used by all of my consumers in Doha because it is the best treatment for the weather here. As a bonus, you should always use a moisturiser with SPF in it so a minimum of 30 SPF or if you go for my recommendation, you should go for 50 SPF. PIONEERING NATURALS We talked all things beauty with MELISSA SGAGLIONE-SEGANTI, Director of Communications at tarte™

Tell us a little bit about yourself. Over my career I’ve had the chance to work with a variety of different beauty, fashion, fitness and lifestyle brands. Joining tarte earlier this year has been more thrilling than I could have even imagined—it’s such an exciting, growing brand where there is no limit on creativity and strategy. It’s a great team to be a part of, and when I’m not in the office or at an event they know they can probably catch me running in Central Park or at a nearby spin class! What does a typical day in your job role at Tarte Cosmetics look like? No two days look the same. I’ll be planning for an international trip one day, working with media on a story another day, and identifying a new brand partner or collaboration the next. That’s what I love about working at tarte, there is always something new to explore and a new challenge to tackle! What has been your biggest challenge to date? How did you overcome this? The public relations field is always evolving. When I entered this industry over a decade ago the landscape of media was different. We were still faxing! It’s been challenging to stay forward thinking and adapt with the times. I’m an official convert to Tarte Shape Tape Concealer. Amidst the events all over town our local editor ANUSHAY KHAN stepped into M|SPA at Alwadi Hotel Doha MGallery to de-stress from yet another meeting.

I

was first introduced to Alwadi Hotel Doha MGallery earlier this year in February at their launch. This was the idyllic introduction to Msheireb Downtown Doha, the world’s first sustainable regeneration project. Where Qatari hospitality meets contemporary design, this hotel is an enticing sight to see and an experience for everyone. The views of Souq Waqif, the luxuriously grand suites, Sofra with its delectable BBQ – I am certainly no stranger to this place today. This time around, I wasn’t concerned with anything other than one thing: to detoxify the anxieties and worries of the day with an

excellent masseuse at my absolute disposal. I went in, determined as an eagle, wanting to simply get started on the relaxing part of the evening after an unusually tiring day. The detoxification process starts the minute you say hello as warm smiles greet you and assure you to leave the worries of the world behind. I was served with a refreshing drink that helped me escape the unpredictable weather outside and soon after, was shown to a changing room with my essentials and then led to the relaxing room. Light blue and green lights helped in the cooling down process and I felt myself relax instantly. I love how M|Spa has oil names as different emotions instead of straight-to-it details;

It is fair to say that we were instantaneously impressed with the overall shape and design of this new open-top four-seat drive. By the time we arrived at the Rosewood London, our already sky-high opinion of the Rolls-Royce brand was once again solidified. We attended the launch of the new RollsRoyce Art programme where Matthew Danton, Bespoke Designer At Rolls-Royce Motor Cars talked about Muse, a forward-looking vision that fosters creativity through collaboration with artists who share their passion for pushing technical and conceptual boundaries. Muse’s flagship initiative invites emerging and midcareer artists to submit a moving-image work that delivers an immersive sensory experience. Artists will be identified by expert nominators worldwide and selected by a jury of leading curators and artists, in a two-phase, two-year process. Only one artist will be chosen to develop a final work. The inaugural commission will be unveiled in 2021. All of this beautiful experience is amplified by this programme and also The Spirit

of Ecstasy Challenge showcases a celebration of both tradition and innovation, asking creative virtuosi to re-imagine the sculptural figurine that graces the bonnet of Rolls-Royce motor cars. I for one love Modern Art as I feel that it is an engaging trap to the senses... as modern art itself is an innovation, experimentation with form, the shapes, colours and lines that make up the work with a tendency to abstraction; and an emphasis on materials, techniques and processes does in fact spotlight the exact definition of Rolls-Royce interiors! We talk to award-winning British artist and designer HELEN AMY MURRAY about her collaboration with ROLLSROYCE and how she sculpts textiles – mainly leather, suede and their synthetic counterparts – into three-dimensional decorative surfaces, including the RollsRoyce Phantom Gallery during her visit to Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Doha. Can you tell me a little bit about yourself, how did you start getting inspiration for art? I studied art throughout my schooling and college, then I went to Chelsea College of Art to do a degree in textile design. I’ve always been massively influenced by art and now able to collect a few pieces that I love so it’s a really big part of my world. Where did the nature aspect come from? What first ignited that? I think looking back pretty much all of my works influenced by nature whether that’s even some of the most geometric patterns. When you look really closely almost microscopically at things there can be a very geometric structure to them, so pretty much everything I do is influenced by nature and that’s obviously just from travelling, just walking around, and so the feathers and the flowers are a very big part, and plants in general have always been a big part of what I do. It was really interesting when you were saying you would digitise something and you would zoom in even on the flower and then make that abstract. Tell us more about the process. When I was looking at the Rolls-Royce Phantom’s rose as a theme my natural kind of response to it was not to do the obvious and just put a few roses on the gallery, even though I’ve obviously shown that’s possible, I kind of wanted to zoom in on it, with the gallery itself its quite, ornate in comparison to working with my large wall coverings and art works. How many gallery items do you host within the gallery at the moment for Rolls Royce? I think I’ve developed a collection of around 20 themes, but these are the first two prototypes and then the phantom rose and the maritime one, the nautical one you saw, are the next ones that will be prototyped so it’s a kind of ongoing process, we aren’t just making them all at once, obviously there’s the testing. It’s such a different process to what we do for the outside of the Rolls-Royce too, obviously everything still has its process and takes its time but it was a real challenge working out how to actually work with the gallery given the proportion and the shape and the irregular shape as its not flat. 78

What would you say has been your biggest challenge? The fact that it was aluminium, so it’s not really upholstery in the way that we would upholsterer a panel, there’s no staples or anything, so I came up with the idea of corseting the back. So, the back is sort of equally beautiful in terms of the level of hand craftsmanship and it has got a permanent corset hand stitched corsetry to it to hold everything in place because there’s no glue or staples or anything Out of the gallery what’s your favourite, if you had to choose? I really love the whisper muse. That was the original one that I was asked when I was asked to work on this project. At the very start I was inspired by the spirit of ecstasy, and whisper muse is kind of like a detail of the drapery on her arm and for me it’s just very subtle, it’s very sculptural and very beautiful, but, I also think the possibilities are so vast and amazing so I’m actually really excited about doing one of the digital peacock feather ones as well in the multi colours How ethical is the process? We have been awarded a Butterfly Mark by Positive Luxury earlier this year! They are a UK based organisation where they assess you for sustainability and good practice and ethical practice for all. We’re obviously quite a small company but people like Stella McCartney and stuff all have this mark. When you click on it, it brings you to a page which shows you what we do and what we’re achieving but for me ever since I started because it’s a hand-made product it has also been a minimal waste process so we’re not buying metres and metres of fabric we’re not throwing away much we order what we need essentially. Everything is made by hand in the studio so very little travelling going on, we don’t travel much as a company. We’re very big on recycling which sounds really lame, but you know. The materials themselves we are always looking at what we can improve on, so there’s a material we use for the depth that we found one that is made out of recycled plastic water bottles, so that would be amazing to start using that, but they just have a massive minimum order which is to be expected I suppose. And then I’ve developed my brand this year, had a rebrand and a new website and within that we are going to have our first range of packaging which will be for the samples, as we send a sample to every client and we’ve never had an actual box so we’re having a really beautiful box made of recycled materials with the branding and everything. In regard to the future with Rolls-Royce have you an additional vision for the next year, two, five? I was actually approached by Rolls-Royce probably nearly three years ago now, when they came up with the idea for this gallery and they app roached about 150 artists and then narrowed it down to seven. So, they had an event in London called the closed room event where they unveiled the seven artworks by seven different artists and that was when I showed the whisper muse. How did you feel in that inaugural moment? It was absolutely amazing because it was a proper incredible event where you walk through a dark tunnel and you’re presented with the new phantom to start with and then we went into another room where they presented these seven beautiful individual gallery pieces and there I was. So, if you had any words of advice to any upcoming artists, what would they be? Believe in yourself and don’t be held back by the idea that you have to be something in particular or do something in particular. Don’t let it cage you into your aspirations. I spent all of my textile degree thinking well I wasn’t doing fashion, I wasn’t doing interiors because it didn’t look anything like this at that stage, completely impractical for anything but it didn’t matter it was beautiful and for me it’s just about making something beautiful. www.helenamymurray.com www.ohlalamag.net

With a job as busy as ours, our local editor ANUSHAY KHAN headed for date night with her friends to enjoy an evening of food, views and ambience.

J

ason Atherton was one of the first people I interviewed when I started this job earlier this year. Could you imagine landing an interview with a Michelin star chef within the first two months? I was ecstatic. Being a writer, I have noticed how I tend to hold things dear to my heart once I know the story behind it. When the Pearl Social was relaunched earlier this year, I got to know all about Jason and his passion for food, his commitment to his family and his way of honouring his legacy – a story made for the likes of me. When you know the love that goes into making the menu, you’re already prepared to fall in love with the cuisine. How the team convinced me to try their BBQ menu, I will never be able to remember. BBQ at Pearl Social? It somehow didn’t fit! I sat next to the soothing views of the sea and saw the Qanect Quartier light up at night. I absolutely love the European vibes that the Pearl gives and Marsa Malaz Kempinski sits in the center of it all; like a queen on a throne. As soon as the first item was served, I latched on to the food as a bee would latch on to honey. You’d think that the sides of the dish would add as an added benefit but the snow pea salad with its feta cheese and scrumptious dressing

kept pulling me back for seconds (maybe thirds and fourths) as a filler between meals too. Haute cuisine meets avid haute foodie is how I would like to describe this dinner. I appreciate people who sometimes understand that there is absolutely no need for starters when it comes to meaty night. The night started with a big bang as hotel Aberdeen Angus striploin was served with its greens and parmesan cheese, accompanied by some horseradish sauce that only added to the juiciness of the tenderloins. Once I bit into this heavenly goodness, it took every ounce of me to stop myself and wait for the rest of the BBQ to be served. Level 1 – Pearl Social wins! One would think that being in a city like Doha would have me accustomed to the seafood around. Whereas it’s true that I do love my maki rolls, sometimes a girl just needs a break. When the monkfish and tiger prawns brochette was served, I whispered to my friend that she was going to have to eat on my behalf. I poured the provencal tomato sauce for the sake of the insta-life and simply took a single bite of the dish. Lets just say that the two of us were fighting over the last piece because the magicians behind the counter just wanted to see who could resist these tempting bites from paradise. Served on skewers similar to the chicken and halloumi, both these delicacies had us roped in until we ate the dressings from the plates as well. The glazed honey drizzled upon the chicken skewer just added to the luscious twist of the yogurt on the dish. Mr Atherton’s newest menu was winning me over and we were only half way through.

“I latched on to the food as a bee would latch on to honey.” For me, the short rib bo took the trophy home. Have you ever imagined how the thing that you are attracted to the most usually has something to do with a memory? This particular dish took me back to Lahore, experiencing the best food I have had in my life; the street food of Punjab. I know this is a Michelin star chefs’ restaurant but trust me, this is the biggest compliment a foodie from Pakistan with a knack of twists and spicy deliciousness could ever give anyone. The smoked rib, the dripping pickled mustard, the BBQ sauce wrapping itself in the dripping juices of the meat and the sauces that can only be described as euphoric folded into warm pita bread that balanced all the flavours perfectly – I had officially met my match at this place. When it comes to desserts, I usually tend to get excited. This was one of those times that I honestly couldn’t care about anything else. The menu has been perfected to the point that I believe the Pearl Social is leading the BBQ game this season. Innovative yet seasoned for local taste buds and simply marvellous for everyone. Every year we manage to survive the holiday season’s odd mixture of warm fuzzy feelings and I-can’t-wait-for-this-to-be-over moments. Between commercialism sapping the meaning out of the joy of giving and the inevitable drama that comes with putting a bunch of people with the same genes in a room together, we could all use a reminder or two about what the holidays are supposed to mean. Of course, books are a great place to find a few words of wisdom about family, giving, new beginnings, and, yes, even food. And, you know, writers, the keen observers of the world, aren’t just going to let you off the hook with a couple of cheesy clichés. All the silly, messy, ridiculousness that comes along with the chaotic season of crowded airports, fridges exploding with Tupperware, and coping with

your parents’ annual amnesia that you’re not actually 10 years old anymore should really be celebrated. Okay, so you’re all grown up now, with a big fancy job, your own apartment, and a gym membership or whatever, we get it… and I’m sure your parents get it, too. But it’s the holidays, let loose a little. No one’s gonna judge you for making the leaning tower of pies out of the leftovers. Besides, how often do you get to wear fluffy pyjamas and rip open your presents like the feral child that you once were? Remember, gift giving is supposed to feel good. Make sure you’re giving the kind of gift that will make you as happy to give it as it will make them to receive it. That’s how you know it’s meaningful. Gifts are hard, but if you take a second to think about the non-material things that someone might appreciate, a night off from parenting, someone else cleaning the house for once, a whole day of sleeping... you could very well give them the best gift they’ve ever gotten without spending too much.
