nd here we are. It’s that time of year again when wardrobes become a battleground as the glut of events fill your December and the need to diversify your outfits makes your heart beat faster. I’ve always faced the beginning of the party season with baited breath - year on year, despite a burgeoning closet (praise be) the “I have nothing to wear” sartorial syndrome rears its head in and I can never understand how, just how, this happens every single time. To make it easier for you to piece a look together, we’ve come up with a shortlist of our favourite style trends, with a Hollywood screen siren inspiration to get you further in the mood, which is sure to make you the life of the party and feel oh so good. Personally I’m partial to simple elegance. An LBD, a delicate set of pearls and rouge lips (Sofia Graniello has you well covered with the perfect hues) is a fine ensemble. But the outfit isn’t the be-all and end-all. Whether it’s an office party, an al fresco affair or a home lounge gathering, social etiquette applies. Angela Beitz breaks it down in a pithy list of things to do and things to avoid. But while we worry about keeping up appearances, let’s not forget to ground ourselves and see the value in what 2015 has brought us. We at Ohlala love the sparkly offerings magazine life brings. From attending fashion shows, to meeting distinguished celebrities at restaurant openings to being moved by contemporary artists, it’s a privilege doing what we do. But you can’t beat those priceless in-house moments when we talk about our own inspirations, women we love and happenings that changed us, as we’re experimenting with layouts and thinking of ways to improve the magazine. We’ve got so much to celebrate, so many reasons to be grateful. So however you bring the year to a close, let there be light.

It’s that time of the year where we all fall into a momentary ‘cold’ spell in Doha. For eight months of the year, incessant heat means we can barely move without sweating, yet the second the climate starts to cool down– it is ‘freezing’. Air conditioning switches off, scarves and (ugly) Uggs are taken out of the closet and (as my mother does), trips to Carrefour for some warming hot chocolate is very much guaranteed this month. Furthermore, the (long-awaited) jacket goes on and finally, just finally, we can all roll our windows down! July is a time for T-shirt and trainers, December is a month for sitting by ‘the fire’ and eating turkey! (At least I pretend to). And talking about festivities, Qatar’s National Day is on the horizon with fabulous activities you don’t want to miss. After living in Qatar for almost a decade (yes, a decade!), Qatar is nothing but home to me and my family – welcoming many others in the future. Safe travels, and safe holidays!

Elizabethan Edge Groundbreaking British-Syrian designer, Nabil El Nayal, has bridged technology and fashion with 3D printing. The autumn-winter collection speaks volumes of art history and Euro-eastern dialogue, which even got Karl Lagerfeld talking...

Style Insight

Let’s start off with your roots. You’re of Syrian origin and were brought up in the U.K. How did you come to be a designer?

I

’ve always felt that fashion choseme!InSyriaIusedtoplayinmyfather’sfabricshop.Iwould climb up the hundreds of rolls of fabrics and look down onto a sea of colour, print and metallic embroideries. It was a huge change when we moved to Sheffield in 1998 but, whilst studying fashion in Manchester and London, I found myself and decided where I wanted to be. I won the womenswear award at Graduate Fashion Week and applied for the British Fashion Council scholarship to study at the Royal College of Art. I still feel like I’m just at the start though. There’s a long way to go yet!

What does your Elizabethan inspired collection speak to? We just love the ruffles..! I’m actually currently undertaking a PHd in Elizabethan dress combined with modern sportswear construction techniques! I’ve been obsessed with Elizabethan era techniques for as long as I can remember and studying history has always kept me mindful that it’s important to create things which last - to create a legacy. Just as obsessed as I am with the Elizabethans, I want future generations to look back at this moment and be inspired by what we do. I want to cut through the noise and create pieces that a woman will keep in her wardrobe forever. I want to create meaningful pieces which tell a story and reflects a moment in time through my research and innovation.

Why Elizabethan in the first place? I’ve always been very inspired by Queen Elizabeth I. I design for strong, passionate women who like to challenge convention and are not afraid to stand out from the crowd. Elizabeth was the perfect embodiment of those traits.

“I’ve been obsessed with Elizabethan era techniques for as long as I can remember and studying history has always kept me mindful that it’s important to create things which last to create a legacy” What’s your favourite piece in the collection and why? The ‘Elizabethan Wing’ dress, which incorporates cutting-edge bonding techniques with a silk tulle overlay is my favourite piece. This collection is the first chapter of my Elizabethan Sportswear story and incorporates modern sportswear finishing techniques, such as, sonic welding along with Elizabethan construction methods, including hand smocking and pleating.

Tell us a little bit about your 3D printing technique. Is this a trend of the moment? I found out I was actually the first designer to use 3D Printing on the catwalk for my Royal College of Art collection in 2010! It enabled me to visualise ideas quickly and accurately, that I couldn’t have achieved by any other means. I’m 56

Style Insight “Karl saw the pleated, bonded shirt at our showroom in Paris and exclaimed “I love it, I love it, I love it.” He has always been such an inspiration to me. Meeting him, listening to his thoughts, his advice and hearing his ideas made me respect him even more” also currently researching the use of 3D scanning in fashion design because I believe it’s critical to always search for innovative techniques to inform your practice. Otherwise you are just repeating what has been done before. What would be the point in that?

We also love the fact that you’ve got a clear blend of Middle Eastern and British history in your pieces. How and why have you created that dialogue in your collection? I find it comes very naturally to me. Obviously, being half English and half Syrian helps! It’s not something. I really have to think about. It’s instinctive.

Now we’ve read you made a shirt for Karl Lagerfeld! How did that come about and are you planning on collaborating with him in the future? Karl saw the pleated, bonded shirt at our showroom in Paris and exclaimed “I love it, I love it, I love it” followed by “We must buy this for Amanda Harlech”. It was such an extraordinary moment I still can’t quite believe it actually happened. Karl has always been such an inspiration to me. Meeting him, listening to his thoughts, his advice and hearing his ideas made me respect him even more. He has an extraordinarily vast knowledge of history and culture which allows him to instantly contextualise both references to the past and cutting-edge innovations. I think if we were to collaborate, we would embrace the latest technology whilst striving to create a timeless and powerful femininity; creating new history.

Has the Middle Eastern market warmed to your designs? Yes! The reaction has been extraordinary. The press have been so interested and supportive of the brand. I think the Middle Eastern influence that is clearly visible in a British brand spurs on patriotism for them! It’s that mix of East and West in my work that makes me unique. I think that I have yet to be discovered as a brand in the Middle East but I am getting there step by step. I am extremely proud of my heritage. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Woman of the Month

Triple Threat

Founded in 2011 by three Qatari sisters Hend, Ghada and Maha Al Subaey, The Kayys came to life out of the desire to create garments that would reflect each sister’s personality and style. The three sisters chat in an exclusive interview with Ohlala about their brand, inspirations and more Being their fourth year in the fashion industry, The Kayys are already creating a buzz in the

Middle East. Being awarded with the prestigious award for Young Designer at the 2013 Arab Woman Award, the brand has no plans to slow down. Not only do the clothes portray their own personal taste, but also, their Middle Eastern heritage is present in every collection with abundant modernity. Gwen Stefani, Olivia Palermo and Hanneli Mustaparta have shown their allegiance to brand’s designs and now they’re back with a winter collection inspired by the iconic Bianca Jagger.

‘The Kayys’ is such a unique name. Can you tell us about the creation of the brand?

When deciding the name of our clothing label, we wanted to make it family related, as our brand is something our whole family is proud of. We call our father Baba Kayy and with us being three sisters who all work together, we decided on the name, The Kayys.

Three sisters, three designers, all creative minds put into one single project. How did that come about?

Growing up together as three sisters we always loved clothes, styling and of course shopping! Fashion really brought us together, so we decided to follow our mutual dream of starting our own clothing label. Our aim from day one was to ensure that each and every piece we make is effortlessly elegant, feminine and beautiful!

As Qatari designers, you’ve been pushing the fashion boundaries by bringing freshness in each and every one of your collections. Where do you take 62

www.ohlala-magazine.com

inspiration from?

From everything around us! There is always something we read, we saw, we felt that will keep inspiring us and helping us create our vision for the next collection. The SS16 collection for example was inspired by Rumi’s quotes , you will find them written on some of our pieces reflecting the spirituality we believe in, in addition to the stormy deserts surrounding us, you will see these organic lines present in our pieces.

Your AW/15 collection is feminine, poetic, delicate and strong, all at the same time. How did the collection come to life?

As designers, we have different characters that we embed in our pieces. One is in touch with her masculine side; she focuses on structure,

“Not only do the clothes portray their own personal taste, but also, their Middle Eastern heritage is present in every collection with abundant modernity” symmetry, etc. Another one is more feminine, so you see that as well in the collection reflected in embroidery and details. So for you to see poetic, feminine and strong characteristics in our collection is perfectly normal as it’s a reflection of our three different characters.

It is an exciting time to be in fashion in Qatar as people are definitely starting to take their style and outfits a lot more seriously. There is no doubt that street-style is changing, people are becoming more bold and daring!

As businesswomen, what have been some challenges you’ve come to encounter along the way?

Which city inspires you the most?

The biggest challenge when starting The Kayys was finding our identity especially since we are three sisters and it was hard to compromise because each one of us has different tastes.

Was it difficult to breakthrough the fashion industry in Qatar and the Middle East?

We cannot pick a specific city as each has its richness. That’s a tough one!

Where can we find The Kayys in Qatar?

We can take your orders on info@thekayys.com for any purchase you want.

Finish the sentence:

Fashion is… a reflection of you. www.ohlala-magazine.com

S

ally, what got you onto this creative path? I grew up in England and moved to Dubai around ten years ago. Although I don’t have a beauty background, I have always been interested in the art world. I’ve always dreamt of getting as involved as possible in the evolving art scene in Dubai. That is how the concept of SoH Art + Beauty was born. I wanted to create a space, which would be a haven for women where they can be bold and daring and explore their creativity. What is it about the creative industry that excites you the most? I really enjoy working with so many different people and meeting the ladies who come to the salon. Seeing my team growing and pushing themselves to their limits really gives me a sense of achievement. The SoH concept is constantly developing and changing so there are always new and exciting ventures to look forward to. How did SoH Art + Beauty come about? The idea came to me about five years ago but naturally as time passed, the concept grew and progressed. SoH is always changing, constantly evolving and updating itself with current trends. Starting from myself, and extending throughout my team, there is a creative flow, which we try to keep moving and growing. We draw inspiration from fashion hubs such as Tokyo, New York and London and to stay on top of our game, we have to keep our standards and our work aligned with the same levels exhibited in each of those cities. What can we expect from SoH Art + Beauty? Always expect something new and different! The options of treatments at SoH are limitless so we really enjoy making each experience feel like a new one, even when it comes to our regular customers. It’s all about being funky but modern and expressing yourself without being afraid to go a little crazy once in a while! How would you define your style? Versatile and constantly evolving. How do you see the region evolving artistically and creatively? This region is growing in leaps and bounds when it comes the art and creative spheres. SoH was a concept that people were not really

familiar with at all when it first launched but now, we have ladies coming in with their own designs and ideas for the nail art and customisation services. There is a phenomenal pool of talent in this region and it is truly exciting to not only be a part of the movement but to also see it growing so rapidly. What would your nail go-to mani be? The Mermaid Manicure uses organic ingredients and caviar crystals and is definitely a personal favourite of mine. Which city inspires you the most? I absolutely love Tokyo and visit the city every opportunity I get so I would definitely say I am inspired by it. I also recently visited Bali and completely fell in love with the people and the culture. Any plans to expand the business regionally? The idea has always been to grow the brand so absolutely; we would love to expand into the region in the future. We have lots of exciting projects and collaborations coming up so watch this space! Three items you can’t leave the house without? My phone, my car keys – and being a sneaker head – either a pair on my feet or in a bag in my hand. Finish the sentence: beauty is… Letting your creative spirit be free and always being comfortable with who you are. SoH Art + Beauty is located at Galleria Mall, Dubai. Opening hours from 10am to 10pm from Saturday to Wednesday. Thursday and Friday from 10am until 12am.

Beauty Insight The Concept

“The New Dimension skin care collection is all about transformation and empowering women to be in control of their own beauty. You can have a lot of fun with colour cosmetics, but where I really pay attention is what I put on my skin in terms of skin care. I love the fact that this new collection allows me to take control and transform how I want to see myself and how others see me.”

Beauty Through The Ages

“My mother was a young lady in the 50s, so she was always very old-school. She believed in never going out of the house without her hair done and at least a little lipstick on. When I was growing up, we didn’t have the means to buy anything luxurious, but my mother always made sure she presented herself in a very feminine way. She was just so naturally stylish, always super feminine and always a mom first.”

Essential Products

“Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair – I love this serum. The hyaluronic acid gives my skin the moisturization it needs when my skin is feeling dry. Estée Lauder Take It Away Makeup Remover Lotion – I don’t wear makeup every day, but when I do, I take it off with Estée Lauder’s non-drying Take It Away Makeup Remover Lotion. I love how the formula is notstripping. Coconut oil - I’m really on the coconut oil bandwagon – I’m on it and I love it. I can use it on my hair, my skin – I love products that have a multi-use. I tend to leave it in my hair overnight, a little deep conditioning for a bit of moisturizing and a little bit of shine.”

Adding Another Dimension

Eva Mendes and Estée Lauder are a dream partnership. And with Eva being the face of the New Dimension skin care products, we chat motherhood, beauty regime and personal growth The Collaboration

“It’s a dream come true to be part of the Estée Lauder family and of such an iconic brand. When I was younger, Estée Lauder was the epitome of beauty and I grew up admiring the brand’s iconic images. It was only later in life when I realised Estée Lauder is a brand for women, founded by a woman and run by women. So it’s very important for me to be part of a company that really celebrates and empowers women. When I was in 7th grade, I went to an Estée Lauder counter and the woman asked if I would like a sample – she gave me Knowing. I’ve loved it and have been wearing it ever since because, in my mind, it smells exactly like a woman should smell. My mother still gives it to me every year for Christmas.” 92

Inner Beauty

“For me, it’s about being my authentic self. It’s about embracing changes and mistakes while really continuing to grow. That’s something I’m really concentrating on right now. I’m only six months into motherhood, so I don’t have any major statements yet to make, but I really do feel that kids learn by example. So, if I work on myself and continue to be open and continue to grow as a person, I think that’s a good place to start.”

“For me, it’s about being my authentic self. It’s about embracing changes and mistakes while really continuing to grow. That’s something I’m really concentrating on right now” Motherhood

“Absolutely – it’s the biggest part of my life. Everything has more weight – who I align myself with, what companies I align myself with, what I’m out there promoting, how I’m promoting it. Everything, for me, goes back to the thought, ‘will I potentially embarrass my little girl at some point?’ I know I will embarrass her, I’m sure of it. That’s what moms do. But I want to make sure that she is proud of me.”

Lifestyle

I have two dogs and often on the weekend I’ll take them on a hike. I love them so much and they are big stress relievers. Living in Los Angeles, there are so many different places to hike. Runyon Canyon is one famous place to hike, but I stay away from that one because I don’t want to get photographed there. But there are a lot of trails there.

Beauty Column Party season conjures all sorts of lovely feels

from cocktails and canapes to super soirees but it can also instill a certain panic when it comes to attending so many events and wanting to look great at all times. If you’re thinking you can get away with a quick swipe of bronzer and a top knot then you’d be wrong. It’s called “Dressed to the Elevens” for a reason. So how to survive these fun times? Read on.

Get a Facial

Party season is all about skin, skin skin. There’s no point getting all frocked up in the perfect outfit if your skin is dry and lacklustre. Deep moisturising facials that contain Vitamin C are wonderful for that party glow and will help your makeup sit better. Don’t forget to get a great deep cleansing facial once January comes around as the combination of late nights and loads of makeup will wreak havoc on your skin. If you don’t have time for a facial then be sure to use one at home after you exfoliate. Hydrating cloth type masks are perfect for pre and post party beauty.

Groom Like a Pro

A bold nail colour is always stunning for events but if you are attending many then it pays to get a manicure in a dusty pink or beautiful nude shade which will ensure your look is clean and polished and will pretty much match all of your party outfits. Applying natural looking false eyelashes or a good eyelash tint are also good time saving investments and be sure to have your eyebrows waxed or threaded.

Embrace the Smoky Eye

I love a bright red lip as much as the next girl but with all the canapes you’ll be eating and bubbles you’ll be sipping, you don’t want to spend half the night in the bathroom 94

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Life of the Party

Winter has arrived with a social calendar jammed packed with events. Angela Beitz shares her beauty cheat sheet to surviving one event after another

reapplying your lippy when you could be enjoying the party. A smoky eye is also the perfect way to transform your daytime look into an evening one by simply applying darker and shimmery toned eyeshadows with a slick of eyeliner.

Don’t Overindulge

While it might be a lovely idea at the time to eat 20 deep fried arancini balls, the remorse that sets in the next day will just not be worth it. It’s all very “Gone With The Wind” but my best advice is not to turn up to a party hungry or you’ll simply end up overeating. It’s all fun and games until your jeans don’t fit.

“While it might be a lovely idea at the time to eat 20 deep fried arancini balls, the remorse that sets in the next day will just not be worth it” Invest In a Good Blow-Dry

Fabulous hair at any time is a good investment so why not treat yourself to a decent blow-dry. A good blowout done section-bysection should last three to four days. Spritz it with a good dry shampoo to give your locks a longer life.

Hydrate

The old H2O has never been a better friend than during event time. Don’t go anywhere without it and remember that if you start to feel thirsty you are already dehydrated. Aim for 8-10 glasses a day. Your skin will thank you for it!

Culinary Insight

A Night of Choices There is no doubt that Marsa Malaz Kempinski has one of the top restaurants in town. This month we headed to El Faro for a fabulous evening of Flamenco, Paella and other stellar choices It’s a Chef ’s Choice

A great concept is now being offered at El Faro for those who love a luxurious spread of food. You might know very little – or nothing at all – about Spanish gastronomy but either way your palate will be pleasantly surprised. Be prepared to be carried away with Spain’s culture and traditions, as Flamenco dancers will take the night away with their tunes and dancing moves. If you’re wondering what the Chef ’s Choice is all about, it’s an exceptional concept for two people to share. It’s an all-3 main-course at a price of QR 900, including Spain’s famous sangria.

The Menu

Being a 3-course meal, all served in Paellas, the evening starts off with Tapas on the Paella, which is a selection of the most traditional Spanish Tapas such as Spanish cold cuts, gazpacho shots, Ensaladilla Rusa, Spanish croquetas, seafood fritura, patatas bravas and pollo al ajillo. For the second Paella course, we had a Spanish paella of our choosing. We couldn’t decide on seafood, chicken, vegetable, fideua, lobster sticky but at the 96

www.ohlala-magazine.com

end we opted for the seafood one! And last, but not least, our third Paella course (desserts!) all were some great Spanish delicacies such as Valenciano smoothie, sliced fresh season fruits, rice pudding, crema Catalana and turron ice cream.

The Venue

A fantastic hotspot to dine at, where contemporary art meets the Middle East with a luxurious twist of exceptional interior design making the venue a work of art. With a loft-inspired atmosphere and graffiti along one of the restaurant’s main wall, the place is nothing but eye candy for art aficionados. The venue is decorated with rustic chairs with a bar in the middle for those who care to enjoy a casual evening. And you can’t miss the authentic Spanish tiles in the entrance, which gives a complete Spanish atmosphere.

Diva Takes Over

Rolls-Royce

Lia Makrigeni steps into the fabulous and luxurious world of Rolls-Royce for the ultimate diva destination as she heads about in bright Doha. She finds this particular experience, never to be forgotten, as she tells Ohlala her love for Rolls-Royce… Photos + Editing: Apostolos Apostolou | Hair: Blue Brush Doha | Dress: Balmain Blue Jumpsuit: Victor & Rolf | Green Ensemble: Christopher KAne | All Outfits Provided By Fifty One East @51_East

T

hey say to be a diva is to hustle. I say, to be a diva is to have a fabulous ride. This month, I experienced the pinnacle of all automotive brands, the one and only Rolls-Royce. Not only did I have the wonderful opportunity to ride in one, but in fact, I had double the opportunity to actually drive two of the world’s most expensive and desirables cars, the Rolls-Royce Phantom and Rolls-Royce Wraith, which made for one unforgettable afternoon. First off I hit the road with the Phantom. This is not just your typical everyday ‘car,’ but more perhaps like having your luxury suite on four wheels. The Rolls-Royce is clearly nothing to do with speed, but more to do with a feeling, a sensation, that one gets only when driving a spectacular automobile such as this. Its grandiose proportions make it a dream to be chauffeured around in, with so much space to stretch out in the hugely comfortable soft leather seats. Driving it, one appreciates the immense power behind such a large and luxurious vehicle, but its dimensions make it a handful for

100 www.ohlala-magazine.com

“Clearly, nothing to do with speed, but more like a feeling, a sensation one gets – only when driving this precious automobile” any but the most confident of drivers. The second model I had an adventure with was the one and only Wraith Coupe. The first thing that strikes you when seeing a car like this are, of course, its stunningly beautiful exterior lines. As for the interior, it is something quite spectacular, with soft leather, grained wood paneling, and beauty in every detail. A feature I particularly liked was the rear-hinged coach doors which open from the front as opposed to the back, as with most cars. It makes for an easy and ladylike exit, especially when wearing a skirt, as you don’t need to turn so much to climb out, you simply swing your legs out and

Diva Drives

stand up. The beauty of this luxurious vehicle, however, is in the overall experience. For instance, one can barely hear the outside, the engine, or practically anything at all. The interior makes you feel secluded and protected from the outside world. It is absolutely impossible not to be seduced by a car like this. The smooth ride and immense power of the twin-turbo V12 engine gave me a sense of exhilarating freedom and overwhelming beauty when hitting the streets of Doha. While the Phantom is strikingly beautiful as a limousine, the sleeker, sportier and graceful lines of the Rolls-Royce Wraith won me over in a way that is hard to describe. I would happily drive this car every day for the rest of my life. Unfortunately, the experience had to end, and the cars had to return, so all that is left to me is to happily reminisce on my experience of such beautiful cars. www.ohlala-magazine.com 101

A Sit Down With

Robert De Niro & Chef Nobu It wasn’t a secret that producer, actor and Academy Award-Winner, Robert De Niro and master chef Nobu Matsuhisa, paid a visit for the opening of their upbeat restaurant, Nobu last month. Ohlala caught up with both stars for an insight on the long-awaited opening

I

s there anything you would like to tell to your fans in Doha about the much-anticipated restaurant?

Chef Nobu: So now we finally have the Nobu Doha! I’d like to introduce our staff and of course, our food with such a spectacular setting for the restaurant. What can I say? Introduce more of my food! Robert De Niro: I’d just say: come, it’s good food!

Chef Nobu is this your first time in Qatar?

No, no. I’ve been here a couple of times before, maybe four times. We have restaurants in Dubai, so I jump on over here to check that everything is ok.

Since it’s not your first time here in Doha, what are your thoughts on Doha’s culinary scene?

Chef Nobu: I know very little about it. Every time I come here, it’s all about Nobu and re-grouping with the staff and making sure the project is heading accordingly.

It’s been a long-standing friendship between you both, what’s the most important lesson you’ve learnt about each other?

Chef Nobu: I learn from Robert all the time. He always has new and different ideas to mine – unique ones. If it’s an idea we like, we go on with it. I don’t know if he learns from me! Robert de Niro: Not much!

It took four years for the birth of Nobu. What took so long?

Robert De Niro: It was four years since I pitched him the idea and for the restaurant to be ready. It took about a year to come up with the concept, build the restaurant and so forth. It was a logical amount of time for all the steps to get to the finishing point.

Robert, what made you jump into the restaurant business?

I created Tribeca Grill, and partnered with Drew Nieporent. He had a good restaurant at that time, probably a three-star one for New York standards in Tribeca film center. I thought he could be of help for Tribeca Grill.

Any plans of opening Hotel Nobu in the Middle East?

Robert De Niro: We are! In fact in Riyadh and Bahrain. We’re also opening one in London, Miami and a lot of other places. 102 www.ohlala-magazine.com

Works From The Mathaf Collection

Ohlala Spotlight

Art Deco in Haute Couture In a world of fairy tales, beauty, elegance and haute couture, fashion designer Rami Al Ali pays a visit to Qatar with his latest collection at Fifty One East Showcasing his latest haute couture A/W 15 collection with a two-day trunk show in Fifty One East located in Lagoona Mall, Rami Al Ali has set the bar super high for women who enjoy decadent, delicate and modern dressing. Inspired by the art deco movement, his feminine and versatile collection first showcased in July in Paris, gives women in the region something new to get excited about. The Syrian fashion designer not only presented his embellished gowns, but also, was present in the country to meet and talk about his latest masterpiece. “I was inspired by art deco, using silhouettes from the 50s and 60s to express what I wanted to achieve.” When asking the designer what elements make his collection truly haute couture and unique he added: “A lot of volume, structure and modernity is present in the gowns. The skirts have a lot of fluidity that give volume, but also, a quite light, feminine and modern taste.” The beautiful and fairty-tale-esque collection was all done and designed within in a three-month period. The designer starts his creative process with mood boards and visuals to set the tone of the collection. Subsequently, the experimental phase begins with drappings and mannequins to feel out the volume. Yet, the last piece of the puzzle is perhaps where the magic happens. “The last month before the show, it’s about creating the atmosphere and the experience the people will have. From makeup, lighting, to casting the models,” adds the designer. With fantastic pastel and grey hues to give the art deco and vintage effect, the gowns are also embellished with magnificent embroidery. “There’s a lot of hand-made work. The artwork of the embroidery is quite geometric, simplifying the art deco. They also carry a lot of stones, Swarovski crystals and beads.” Not only is the fashion designer a true master at his craft, but also, very hands on with every detail of his creations. When asking Al Ali what was so intriguing about haute couture, the designer smiles and adds: “There is a beautiful space of freedom, with few rules. It is very emotional, passionate and very experimental. A refined craft.” Rami Al Ali has also launched his ready-made line, following three successful collections and working on his fourth one. Aiming for global visibility, the world is a playground for the creative soul. www.ohlala-magazine.com 105

Designer, Azin, debuts her collection at the Heya Arabian fashion Exhibition

Cityzen by Azin Debuts in Qatar Azin Valy architect, fashion designer, and CEO of Cityzen visited Qatar to be part of the 8th edition of the Heya Arabian Fashion Exhibition. We sat down with the designer for an insight on her creative approach to fashion Designer, Azin Valy at the Heya Arabian Fashion Exhibition in Qatar

Architect by profession,

but with a profound love for fashion, philanthropy, interior design and founder of Cityzen, Azin Valy is creating awareness between cities and promoting the beauty of what she does best. The New York-based designer is also in full power of her sister company, I-Beam Design. Like any other woman with drive and vision, she’s an architect by day and a fashion designer by night. With more than 20 years of experience in design, construction, urban and product design, Azin has taken her love and interest for cities, roads and maps full-scale - into fashion. “All my collections are based on maps of cities and is meant to connect the heart and soul of the city with the wearer,” says the designer when asking about her fashion and accessories brand. Now, the New Yorker is stepping into the fashion world with her brand, with a much more creative approach based on aerial views of cities from around the world, promoting global ‘Cityzen-ship’ and awareness. Her interesting designs are not what you expect, with let’s say, a typical scarf. They stand for her real passion: cities. Each fashion garment and accessory has a map of a particular city, bringing and uniting many capitals, but above all, her ideas. “I’m an architect by profession. I was looking into my designs and I thought ‘how beautiful they are, and why not add them into fashion?’ What a great platform to create fashion, but also show the amazing cities from above.” The designer at heart states that her love for design was sharpened through her university years, which changed her perspective into design, ideas, concepts and so forth. “The education that I received at my university, it was a way to look at design from a broader perspective and be able to apply it to many different things.” We can all expect wearing your favourite city, if not, the city that you live in. The CEO also draws inspiration from past travels, places where her staff is from and even countries of conflict. But not only do her creations stand from a lucrative point, the designer makes sure to participate and design exclusive pieces for charity groups to help raise funds. www.ohlala-magazine.com 107

The Hendrix of Trumpets:

Ibrahim Maalouf

Ibrahim Maalouf is one of the only musicians in the world who plays the quarter-tone trumpet, created by his father in the 1960s. During his stay in Qatar in November 2015, where he was presenting his latest album, Kalthoum and Red and Black Light, we had the chance to meet him and ask a few questions…

B

orn in Beirut, but now residing in Paris, Ibrahim Maloof is a virtuoso of the quarter-tone trumpet, which enables him to work with the ‘maqam’, or system of melodic modes, in traditional Arabic music. To say he is accomplished would be an understatement. Hi Ibrahim, so you are a trumpet player, composer, arranger, producer, you even teach music improvisation. Can you tell us more about improvisation? So … do you have two hours? (Laughs) It is very interesting, as it is teaching someone how to transcend pre-established rules as improvisation. It is inventing something on the spur of the moment. There are very few musicians, including classically trained musicians, who improvise because it is not taught or encouraged in classrooms. In fact it is quite nice to teach someone how to be free. It is like a lesson about freedom but through music education, so it’s very exciting. There are many evident parallels between speech and music, you know when people talk over each other or when we don’t listen to each other, often you are hearing but without listening. Therefore the music lessons are not a life lesson per say, but a lesson on living together in a society or as a group. You are both Lebanese and French and have collaborated with many people of many backgrounds. 110 www.ohlala-magazine.com

In some way you are a symbol of mixed-race and plural identities in modern France. What would you like to say to some people who, in France, think that identity is based on skin color? It’s difficult to choose the right words when talking about this type of topic. When my dad was listening to me playing music with Western influences, he got scared I would lose my Lebanese or Arab roots. However I managed to convince him that it was the opposite—it was not me who was changing but the Arab culture which has evolved over the years—like all other cultures did, gradually, over centuries. Although it is fine to refer to the origins of a civilisation, you cannot deny that heritage is something alive that is constantly evolving. People who deny “Performing live music is a this dimension will have difficulty to way to connect with people, bear the evolution of our world. To those to share emotions with people, I want to say, open your eyes, your ears, accept the world is changing and people. It is an exhilarating don’t be scared if your heritage is being experience when you feel you transformed—we are promoting it and are being loved by others” giving it a new soul. On the contrary, join us in this process so we can certainly keep a certain level of traditions despite changes. In the history of all great civilisations you find this blend of culture and the concept of borrowing ideas from abroad.

Ohlala Spotlight Your father (Nassim Maalouf ) revolutionised the trumpet by inventing the four-valve trumpet—most just have three. Could you explain in simple terms what he invented exactly? In Arab music you have modes that we call the ‘makams’ which are modes with quarter-tone intervals, and these modes opened the door to incredible possibilities and unlimited combinations. It allows you to play Arab scales on the trumpet, something that was impossible in the past. A classic trumpet is like a piano keyboard - it allows half tones only—C, C sharp, D, D sharp etc. So my father added a fourth valve - that allows the player to lower each note by a quarter-tone—then we can play the makams on a trumpet. What is interesting here is that he invented the only Arabic instrument. My father basically built the bridge between trumpet and Arabic music and I inherited from him and today I’m carrying the mantle of my father.

Can you tell us a little more about your latest album, Kalthoum and Red and Black Light ? Why a tribute to the Egyptian Diva? I grew up listening to Oum Kalthoum. Before bedtime my dad used to always play Oum Kalthoum as each song lasts more than one hour. She is part of my language, I know her songs by heart and I’m a big fan. I know for most of the Arabs of my generation Oum Kalthoum sounds old fashioned and I wanted the public to rediscover the beautiful melody of her repertoire by reinterpreting some songs using Jazz as a more modern musical language. I’m using the original melody, I’m playing the trumpet in the exact way she used to sing - it is more or less a remix or a remastered version to give it more of a modern twist.

Ibrahim, it seems you had a curious love/hate relationship with the trumpet. What is the current situation? No seriously, I really like this instrument. Initially, as it was my father’s instrument I had difficulty to claim ownership of it. Moreover I became wrapped up in a very competitive mindset, with an obsession with winning. I had to achieve more than my father has achieved even though he went to the Paris Conservatory. I was someone who looked like an athlete. On the other hand, I was composing, playing music, inventing new songs but only in the intimacy of my bedroom while my career as a ‘musician’ consisted only of music contest and winning prizes. Do you like live performance ? Do you like the contact with the public? Yes, performing live music is a way to connect with people, to share emotions with people. It is an exhilarating experience when you feel you are being loved by others. It sounds a bit cliché but I seek for love when I play music. For me the music is something very intimate, when I was a kid and I got to France to escape the war in Lebanon. I used to take refuge in music as I couldn’t speak French nor communicate with others. Sometime when you play your four-valves trumpet on stage it literally sings through the horn with the eloquence of Edith Piaf or Nina Simone. It is like Jimi Hendrix who could make his guitar sound like a female singer’s vibrato. What kind of things do you say through your music? My music is never conceptual or aesthetic, it is always about myself and my everyday life. The music I’m performing on stage or in studio is music I have in my mind for years before I release them to the public. www.ohlala-magazine.com 111

Travel Escapes

Unique is a word that is used far too often these days but it ’s simply the only way to describe The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel, as it ’s truly one of a kind. Upon entering the hotel, you are immediately transported to a different time. A classic, old New York feeling washes over you and it ’s hard to not be completely charmed. Timeless and iconic, it ’s actually hard to believe that a hotel as special as this still exists today. The Carlyle has been a timeless Manhattan mainstay since it was built in 1930. Designed by Bien & Prince and named after British essayist Thomas Carlyle, the hotel has served an impressive list of guests and visitors since it was opened. Every American president since Harry S. Truman has visited the hotel and President John F. Kennedy maintained a suite on the 34th floor for a decade. It ’s even rumoured that Marilyn Monroe was snuck through the service entrance on the 77th Street to visit the then President after her famous rendition of “Happy Birthday ” at Madison Square Garden. If The Carlyle walls could talk they ’d certainly have some stories to tell. Everyone from royalty to Hollywood’s elite chooses the prestigious property when visiting New York and Woody Allen even plays clarinet each week in the Café Carlyle with the Eddy Davis New Orleans jazz band. You can’t get much more New York than that. The 193 room hotel is set in an art deco style, keeping the theme of when it was built and the views of Central Park are simply breathtaking. There are also residences at this grand property and the lucky people that live here are also privy to all the services that the hotel provides. We are taken up to our suite on the 11th floor by a smartly dressed elevator operator and enter our room which is classic, elegant and refined. The room feels more like an Upper East Side apartment than your standard hotel room. They’ve managed to maintain the old-world feeling of the hotel while still having every modern luxury available including huge plasma TV screens, iPod docking stations and excellent wifi. It ’s the hotel’s amenities that really set it apart though: Kiehl’s

beauty products, monogrammed bed linen for special guests and in some suites even boast grand pianos. A staff of 400 are ready to cater to your every need, 24 hours a day. The property is brilliantly positioned, just off Madison Avenue, a block from Central Park and just a ten-minute walk to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We spent a brilliant morning strolling Madison Avenue for some five-star shopping and then continued all the way down to 57th Street to visit the world-famous Barneys New York and Bergdorf Goodman. Bloomingdale’s and Henri Bendel are also not far from here so you certainly won’t be short of fabulous places to shop. The jewel in the crown of The Carlyle would have to be its famous Bemelmans Bar. If the name sounds familiar, Ludwig Bemelmans wrote and illustrated the children’s book Madeline about a mischievous Parisian girl who lives in a vine-covered house in

“If The Carlyle walls could talk

they’d certainly have some stories to tell. Everyone from royalty

to Hollywood’s elite chooses the prestigious property”

Paris. The Bemelmans Bar is decorated with murals depicting Madeline in Central Park, painted by the author. These are his only artworks on display to the public and instead of accepting payment for his work, he received 18 months of accommodation at the prestigious hotel for him and his family. The bar is busy pretty much every night and you’ll rub shoulders with everyone from socialites, business types, celebrities and documentary filmmakers. Bar tenders in tails will whip you up a fantastic mixed drink so be sure to try and snag a seat at the bar or one of the intimate tables while listening to the live jazz band. It ’s really the amazing staff and old world touches that make this hotel so special. Staying at The Carlyle is a truly special experience and a worthwhile splurge that will stay in your memory for years to come.

Miss Ohlala

Photography by Guy Bourdin

Crazy Girlfriends Fight Back We’ve all been part of the ‘psycho girlfriend’ category at least once in our lives. We’ve all left fifty missed calls to that guy we were obsessed with and who played us wrong (well I did). And that is OK because crazy shaming stops now… I vividly remember as I was just about to leave my 50th missed call to my long-term boyfriend, I received one single text message saying: “You’re crazy.” Was I crazy for calling 50 times? Perhaps I did go off the rails by calling nonstop just to upset him with my crazy calling technique. But if we rewind six months prior to my ‘psychotic’ behaviour, many of you will understand why women are always lambasted for their ‘crazy’ behaviour.

‘Psycho’ Doesn’t Happen Overnight The ‘P’ word is a big word, often used without thinking what ‘psychotic’ really means. The C-word is also a term used – especially from men – for women who have caught their boyfriends cheating. It’s often used as a tool to shift responsibilities and make the girl look and feel bad for things said and done. Our feelings ladies don’t just jump from one box to the other, over nothing. That is exactly what happened with me and my upsetting C- behaviour. Not only was I calling non-stop that night, but my obsession over trust reached to a point where my ex had to take selfies to prove his location, friends, and even the girls involved (This is crazy, but I do have a point). 142 www.ohlala-magazine.com

It all started slowly when my ex would lie and I would find weird text messages from friends who happen to be girls. Emojis with hearts, ‘I miss you,’ ‘I love yous’ started to pop on his mobile phone, more often. Dodgy! That is when my ‘psycho’ alert activated and I decided to search for the truth.

What You Find Is What You Get!

After my last attempt to rekindle our love, I decided to hop over to his university campus and put a stop to my erratic behaviour and his suspecting ways. I cried and went – whoa! when I finally peeked into phone and found what I needed to find to prove my gut was damn right. Not only did I find endless private messages with several girls, but pictures and number exchanges too – the complete cheating combo. Yes, my feelings were spot on - enough to pack my bags and go back home.

‘Crazy’ Gals Confess “My boyfriend would always add my friends from back home on Instagram, I would always nag about it and had several arguments because of this. Two months later, a friend of mine sends me a message telling me I needed to have a word with my boyfriend because his conversations were making my friend uncomfortable. Um, abort!” Holly, 27 “I found weird things on my husband’s phone, only to find out he was cheating on me with his colleague from work. Now I understand those late nights over several months. I kicked him out of the house. He apologised, but I still don’t trust him.” Jessica, 33 “One day I had a terrible argument with my boyfriend. I suspected he was cheating. Long story short, I crashed my car just to get his attention!” Amra, 26
