EDITOR’S LETTER The holidays have snuck up on us again, and now we find ourselves right in the middle of party season. Time flies when you’re having fun, huh? Like charity, the festive period starts at home. For all the Insta-quotes online, there is one that resonates with me – don’t just buy presents, be present. Partly because you can be so busy getting the roast potatoes perfect that you miss out the fun of dinner itself. Especially because in this day-and-age, with everyone attached to their smartphones, it can be a struggle to get anyone to listen. So, what I’d really like, is just a day where everyone is fully present. As 2017 draws to a close, and 2018 looms around the corner, take a moment to reflect on what you can do to bring a smile to someone else each day. We’re surrounded by too much negativity, stress and pressure. Let’s not let that define and mould us when we can be so much better and make things so much better for others around us. Finally, and most importantly, bring on the sparkle and shine, dress to impress, put on your party shoes and unleash the party animal in you. And when you are busy making the heads turn by putting on your best look, don’t forget to flaunt the right attitude and flash your best smile. Happy Holidays!

Everybody

HURTS,

Sometimes!

JK Fashion Indulgence shares with us their perspective on coping with the stress that can ensue over the festive period.

P

ain is real, we all feel it at different stages of our lives and various factors come into play when it inflicts itself upon us. Generally we’re very good at hiding our pain. We arise every morning, look in the mirror, bury the burdens and put on our smile to take-away. We convince ourselves that today is a good day and tomorrow will be even better. We feel a little more positive already, for the time being. If I can share with you a secret; it’s a wonderful thing to be seen as strong, but, it’s even greater to be at peace when you feel weak and vulnerable. We are always encouraged to reach out to friends, family or professionals for comfort and assistance. Apart from accepting our downtimes and sharing them, it is also important to give time some time and allow sufficient passing to heal. The most devastating pain is caused by mother-nature; loss, betrayal, sickness and injury. These can hit us unexpectedly and none of us are immune from their painful consequences. They are unfortunate factors of life and we have little control over their brutal occurrence. There is another source of pain and hurt, and that is the damage that we inflict upon each other. We cultivate status, beliefs and rely on them to measure another’s worthiness. These prejudices cruelly discriminate against our fellow human beings often because of race, age, religion, disability, education, marital status, financial status and even physical appearances. We subtly (and sometimes subconsciously) belittle one another and exclude them from ourselves as being unworthy. This socially induced hurt can cause irreparable damage, yet it is something we all have total control over correcting. Be beautiful and kind to all who come your way today and make it your routine! You will feel better within yourself and so will the world around you. If you are reading this and hurting because of this type of pain, guess what, the hilarious thing is that those hideous comments, insults, or actions are perpetrated by our society’s weaker members. They feel compelled to create an escape from their own inferiorities and inadequacies. In order 40

www.ohlala-magazine.com

to accept who they see as themselves they feel the need to tear down those around them. This elevates their self- esteem albeit falsely and temporarily, and yes, they are hurting too! I do not know what was or will be the cause of your pain, but it’s a part of living. You are normal and you are not alone, there will always be many others who are suffering more than you will. The underlying questions are, what will you do about it? What do you need to make the best out of it? In your world everything can be better for you, look for it without causing anymore heartache to yourself or others. Often, it’s amazing how pain and hurt can be used as a catalyst for introducing positive change in our lives. In our darker moments it’s a good time to seek out the many things that we can change to find our unique identity. Perhaps a fresh image, a brand new attitude, or a fresh perspective on who we want to be and how we can present ourselves. Beauty is seen, and it wells from the radiance within you. We at JK Fashion Indulgence can work with you when you are ready, to establish the changes appropriate for a complete unique you. When this takes place you become undismissable, and undeniably more charismatic. Your own potential transforms you. It’s not my quote but: “the world is your runway”. Walk in style and let them hear you without muttering a sound, leave your positive mark! Let’s take the first step in enjoying the beauty within us, around us, and amongst us, but, don’t forget we are all beautifully imperfect beings and it’s okay to feel a little pain, because everybody hurts, sometimes. We are here for you at JK Fashion Indulgence. For more information call: +974 5581 0238 about.u@jkfindulgence.com, www.jkfindulgence.com, @jkfindulgence

OHLALA Spotlight

LICENCE

T O C R E AT E Nicole Bischofer, Head of Womenswear Design at COS shares the visionary behind their AW17 collection How did you come to realise that fashion was your calling? I could not find what I was looking for in the shops and so began making my own garments to fill the gap of the pieces I could not buy. My mother would help me with the pattern cutting, she would work free hand and this is how I began. Later my interest in design progressed and I went on to join pattern cutting courses, this lead to a tailoring course followed later by fashion studies. What’s your process when you come up with new ideas for COS? We create seasonal directions together as a team. We take time to research Art, Architecture, Design and Lifestyle, creating a ‘world’ where the ideas are conceptualised. Together with the designers we try to make this world come alive, interpreted as new shapes, fabrics, details. Do you have any part in the making of the clothes or do you leave it to your team to do it? I have a very good relationship with the team. We take time to discuss and plan each collection. Once we have a final idea in mind and we all understand the inspiration and what we expect from the pieces, the team proceeds with designs, keeping me in the loop at all times. Your womenswear collection caters for the modern woman. In short, what defines a woman in the Middle East? Individual Culturally aware Sophisticated 52

www.ohlala-magazine.com

The AW17 collection explores new proportions and soft tailoring. How do you want women to feel when they wear them? We hope the collection makes women feel elegant, confident and stylish whilst being functional and working with their lifestyle. Pieces should feel modern and easy to wear, for moving from one occasion to the next. What influenced the direction of this collection? We looked a lot at architecture and especially an Austrian fire station which had these beautiful shades of red and used a new type of concrete material that is very light. This influenced our choice of material as well as parts of our colour palette. We also looked at geometry within art and that led to geometric drapes and outlines in the silhouettes. What’s your favourite, go-to item from the collection and why? One of my favourite pieces is a reinvented black poplin shirt with a polo neck collar. it’s a piece which I will continue to wear through the seasons. What pressures do you face being the Head of Womenswear Design at COS? I take each day as it comes, every day is different. We work hard to make sure that we are staying true to our brand philosophy whist giving the customer what they want. Each season we will work to find new ways to reinvent classic pieces and offer exciting new fabrics and style.

The GCC is home to some exquisite and eclectic fashion. Which other part of the world do you think has great statement fashion? Many places in the world have great statement fashion and we are continuing to learn from different areas. We have a strong connection with Asian countries such as Japan when it comes to a more minimal, timeless design style however we search everywhere for inspiration. What can we look forward to with future collections? As I previously touched on, we take inspiration from Art and Design and our research helps us to decide on new colour palettes and directions. In the future, we will continue to design with Innovative drapes and will always search for interesting fabrications to mix with and reinvent our timeless staple pieces. COS is now open at Doha Festival City, First Floor

We hope the collection makes women feel elegant, confident and stylish

LIFE OFTHE PARTY

It’s that time of year again and as the festive season rolls round late nights coupled with over indulging become a common theme and instead of looking rested and perky all that fun starts to take its toll on our bodies and skin. Angela Beitz shares her best beauty tips for surviving the next month

MAKE FRIENDS WITH H2O

During the day of and during your event drink lots of water to restore all of your fluids. It also helps to limit your intake of salt which will add to your dehydration and in some cases can lead to swelling. Hydrating yourself with help you feel better but will also get your skin glowing and your complexion will thank you for it the next day.

PERFECT YOUR SKINCARE REGIMEN

This is probably one of the most important things you can do for your skin. It can be the last thing you feel like doing after a long night out but make every effort to remove your festive make-up before you go to sleep. Leaving eye make-up on your skin might cause it to darken as the deeper pigments can penetrate your skin. . If you do fall asleep with your make-up on, make sure you do a proper job of cleansing your skin the next morning including exfoliation and a hydrating mask to help your skin recover from being mistreated.

MASTER YOUR ROUTINE

Decide on your make up and hair looks prior to your events to save time. If doing your own make-up and hair isn’t your thing that outsourcing it is your best option. Some salons offer both hair and make-up services and we love the ones that will come to your home that will save you time and stress trying to find a park or getting stuck in traffic. Gel nails are also a good option for party season (opt for a colour that will suit any outfit).

INVEST IN FACE MASKS

There is never a better time to use face masks then party season. They will help to plump and hydrate your skin before an event and help to sooth and heal your skin post event. Sheet masks are becoming increasingly popular and we love the ones with Hyaluronic Acid to really recharge and plump your skin. Pop one in the fridge the night before an event to use the next morning - you’ll love the cooling effect and it will help those pesky puffy eyes.

EXFOLIATE

Those late nights and lots of make- up will really start to take its toll on our complexion so ensure you ramp up on the exfoliating. This includes full body scrubs and exfoliating mask for your face. and follow it up with lots of moisture. It help your products to settle into your skin better and make your make-up glow.

USE CLEVER PRODUCTS

Make up wipes, illuminating concealer, longwear foundation, dry shampoo and anything hydrating and glowing are your best friends for party season. 62

www.ohlala-magazine.com

This also goes for any type of product that doubles as something else, like a lip tint that can also be used as blush etc so that you can take it with you in your clutch without taking up too much space.

ORGANISATION IS KEY

Book all your pampering appointments in now. Being orgnaisined is so important and will save you from lots of stress and give you more time for partying. Time slots fill up super quickly towards the end of the year so book all your hair appointments, mani/pedis, spray tans and blow-dries no. It pays to book now right up until New Years.

EMBRACE THE SMOKY EYE

I love bright and bold lipsticks but you don’t want to spend half the night in the bathroom reapplying your lippy when you could be enjoying the party. A smoky eye is also the perfect way to transform your daytime look into an evening one by simply applying darker and shimmery toned eyeshadows with a slick of eyeliner.

Offered in a choice of four reds numbered 1, 2, 3, and 4 respectively it is a return to the classic territory of CHANEL. Gabrielle Chanel was never without her own red lipstick; it was seen as very much part of her personal signature. And it is the notion of the iconic, personal signature that Lucia Pica seeks to impart and provide for each woman through the CHANEL red lipstick, making it an indispensable “red for life” or “rouge pour la vie.” 64

A VISAGE TO BRIDGE THE GULF

H

ave you ever had a crazy, yet potentially inventive and dynamic idea, wondering if you could bring it to fruition? Qatari makeup artist Emilia Subaih acted upon her inspiration, bringing her innovative creativity to life. Emilia’s passion for the wildly creative is already evident if you have had the good fortune to see her work. Inspired by Qatar National Day and the current Gulf crisis, she was able to see a vision that would challenge conventional wisdom through artistic means. Emilia could also see the opportunity in empowering women, utilising artistic subtleties to convey strength, defiance and solidarity. Adopting Machiavelli’s ‘Never waste the opportunity of a good crisis’, Emilia was able to envisage something beyond the conventional responses to the ongoing dilemma in the gulf. To some extent, reputation was a significant element that brought the whole project to life. Emilia has garnered prominence in the world of fashion and beauty with her attention to detail and propensity for dynamism. Bringing together other talents to complement her own, Emilia created an iconic statement, finessing

QATARI MAKE-UP ARTIST EMILIA SUBAIH IS NOT JUST A PRETTY FACE WITH A WHOLE HOST OF ACCOLADES GLITTERING HER PORTFOLIO, MAKING HER ONE OF THE MOST SOUGHT-AFTER ARTISTS IN QATAR.

the effusive ‘Glorious Tameem’. Iraqi Model Nuha Al-Samarrae, under Emilia’s artistic direction, portrays the genuine clarity in response to the crisis. The juxtaposing sense of strength captured in Nuha’s eyes; undeniable! Clearly, she visualizes the whole concept; with Sudanese calligraphy Sara Madani’s, an exquisite detail that encompasses the message Emilia wants to convey. Not content with simply bringing the project to life, Emilia decided that the ‘crew’, which included Lebanese hair stylist Neemat, and german photographer Robson Ponte, should embrace the creativity in the form of a t-shirt. An idea that continually inspired; one that continued to innovate as the project came to its conclusion. Portraying the subtleties of the crisis, Emilia realises the power of both language and art, contemplating what it means to be part of something glorious indeed. Beyond the brilliance of makeup, Emilia’s creative vision will resonate beyond the crisis and far beyond the realms of a political agenda. TRAVEL Escapes Never have I been so awestruck upon the journey to a hotel as I was with The Torch. It can be seen for miles and miles due to its majestic height of 300m. So much so that I could even pick it out as I was coming into land at Hamad International Airport. There it was, dominating the skyline, lit up in pink to promote Breast Cancer Awareness. It was obvious that this was going to be an incredible stay at a truly iconic hotel. Travelling with my partner generally involves spotting sporting stadia, much to my general bewilderment. Fortunately for me, The Khalifa International Stadium, is right next door so this saved a huge amount of my precious time as he could just gape at it from the hotel. The Torch was built to celebrate the 2006 Asian Games in which the hotel was quite literally an Olympic torch, of colossal proportions. It is situated in the Aspire Zone, a vibrant Sports City, which aims to promote health and wellbeing as well as nurture the next generation of Qatari sports men and women. As a member of the leading hotels of the World, it was no surprise to be gobsmacked as we walked into the hotel reception. The foyer was majestic and the kind welcome from the staff was perfect after a tiresome flight. The check in process was

swift and we were shown to our room on the 11th floor with the help of one of the splendid glass elevators. As we passed each floor on our ascent, my partner noticed that there was a different sporting statue on each floor, a sight which thrilled him to bits. Walking to our room around the curved corridor which circles the central column of the structure, we were impressed by the lighting of the hallways. This feeling was further enhanced as we stepped inside our room. The carpet cushioned every single step as we checked out our abode for the next 3 days. It was incredibly modern, spacious and comfortable from the amazing bed to the beautiful en suite bathroom. But, the game changer, the piece de resistance, was the iPad that controlled the functionality of the room. From changing the lighting (every colour imaginable) to opening the curtains to changing channels on the TV to setting the air-conditioning amongst many other wonderful applications, this iPad proved how unbelievably innovative this hotel is. The bed can make or break one’s hotel experience. If you don’t sleep well or are uncomfortable then your opinion on the place dampens, fortunately there wasn’t a chance of these feelings at The Torch. Oh my! What an incredibly delightful night’s sleep. Possibly the most comfortable hotel bed I have ever stayed in, and that is high praise indeed. This coupled with a wonderfully refreshing morning soak using the amazing rainfall shower, set me up perfectly for breakfast. Breakfast is served in the Flying Carpet restaurant, one of The Torch’s many award winning restaurants. The buffet breakfast, with live cooking stations, was exceptional. The range was phenomenal and included cuisine from all over the world. No matter where you are from, you’ll find something that makes you feel right at home. The bread was a personal highlight as it had been baked fresh and quite literally had me salivating after every bite. I often find a hearty breakfast really sets me up for the day and this was no exception. We decided that we should check out Villaggio Mall for a spot of retail therapy. This was made even easier by the walkway which connects the hotel to the shopping mall, accessible only to hotel guests. A nice touch which makes the journey all the more tolerable, especially in the baking sun. After a few buys, it was time to chill out and relax in the state of the art facilities that The Torch has to offer. The cantilevered swimming pool is situated on the 19th floor and overlooks the national stadium as well as Doha city centre in the distance. What a view

TRAVEL Escapes it is and the perfect spot for catching some rays and swimming a few lengths. This is exactly what we did and we loved it! We felt like royalty laying on this majestic deck as the hotels structure continued to curve above us. An amazing sight. We checked out the gym on the opposite side of the floor but decided that this break was for relaxing, not working out, so opted against a few km on the treadmill. But we did notice the state of the art TechnoGym equipment, a sign of the hotel’s standard of excellence. There was also a jet shower and foot massage walkway which was a fascinating experience. Walking through different forms of water fall at different temperatures whilst getting a foot massage on the stones underfoot. A winning feature in my eyes. We ate in the hotel each evening and why not, there really isn’t any need to leave. The experience of Three Sixty, the only revolving restaurant in Doha was breathtaking. The room gently rotates to give a full 360° panoramic view across the whole city and surrounding areas, a must, especially on an evening when the skyline is illuminated. The Torch Tea Garden is a fantastic spot for afternoon tea. On the 21st floor, overlooking Aspire Park, the room is decked out with an extensive collection of furniture, all from Thailand. Along with the healthy green foliage that lines the walls, this is the perfect spot for refreshment whilst watching the sun go down. As our stay came to an end we reflected on the hotel being of an Olympic standard. It will be the focus of the world’s gaze in 5 years as Qatar welcomes the FIFA World Cup but until then it will be a shining light for the city of Doha. An iconic hotel leading the way in innovation and inspiration. For reservations please contact: +974 4446 5600 / thetorchdoha.com.qa

MAKE A MEMORY DOWN TRADITIONAL LANES Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels by Tivoli welcomed Ohlala to the height of sophistication and modern design, Al Jasra Boutique Hotel, proving itself as an idyllic choice for Doha’s most discerning visitors. Walking up the cobbled Souq Waqif

to Al Jasra proved pleasant imminently, as their concierge staff efficiently took my luggage from my pre-arranged private transfer and welcomed me to their property. I’m a firm believer that first impressions indeed count and I smiled as I was further warmly greeted at their check-in desk. Looking around I marvelled at the architectural interior that cultivated their foyer area, including beautiful blue teardrop beads that danced in the light beautifully. As I was escorted to my room I was offered the opportunity to take a free tour of Souq Waqif later in the afternoon, which I graciously accepted. Nothing could have prepared me for the shock I felt as my hotel room door was opened. 170 square metres of richly appointed space awaited me as I had been allocated to stay in one of their Amiri Suites which is the epitome of sumptuous living. Perfect for families and groups, these spaces boast separate living and dining rooms and a kitchenette inspiring perfect holiday memories. As far as the eye can see is intricate plush touches, from colourful Arabian carpet to marble bathrooms and high-end toiletries - I’m obsessed with Elemis so this is indeed a welcome bonus. You can even watch sunsets over Doha’s historic quarter from a private balcony perfectly positioned over the souq if you so wish, that is, if you can manage to separate yourself from the extremely comfortable clutch of the extralarge double bed. The tour proved very informative with easy access to falcon souq, where distinguished raptors are sold for thousands of Riyal, the unique falcon hospital and the corniche. Souq Waqif is a showpiece of traditional architecture, handicrafts and folk art, and was once a weekend trading area for the Bedouins. The only traditional souq to remain in the Gulf, it’s now a charming labyrinth of narrow streets where visitors can bargain and purchase an amazingly diverse range of products. Al Jasra is a word that originates from the meaning ‘higher ground’, with the district marking the area in which the traders first used to gather to sell their wares. It differs 80

TRAVEL Escapes from many other buildings in the Souq Waqif area in that it evokes a more exotic, less traditional Gulf architecture. Our visit to the Arabian Horse Stables was my personal highlight as I witnessed two beautiful horses affectionately embracing one another. This is probably Doha’s biggest asset, and certainly the place visitors are most impressed with. All too often cities in the Middle East have lost their traditional souqs due to the pressure to shop in Malls. Souq Waqif strongly holds onto the traditional feeling of the souq, and the cafes and restaurants are bustling in the evenings which was amazing to embrace oneself in. As a tourist I was able to mingle with local people, and pick up some traditional crafts too. Souq Waqif is a deeply sensory shopping experience, from whiffing fresh spices and fragrant shisha to an encompassing kaleidoscope of colours. Must-visit attractions include the Falcon Souq, where distinguished raptors are sold for thousands of Riyal, the Arabian horse stables, and an eclectic mix of art galleries, restaurants and shisha lounges. Well worth a visit! As I arrived back at Al Jasra I decided to have a night-in, something which is unusually unheard of with such a hectic schedule. The bath was situated amidst sparkling features in what has to be the most glamourous bathroom I have ever been in. There is a television integrated into the adjacent mirror of the bath which allowed further optimisation of me unwinding as I drew myself a bubble-bath. The complimentary dressing gown was very snug, to the point I questioned how I could ever adorn another piece of clothing again. Sheer bliss!

Being prone to being ‘hangry’ is never an issue here as there is a grand selection of great culinary experiences offered to you from Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels by Tivoli, enjoy from Moroccan, Indian, Lebanese, Arabic and International favourites, their intimate restaurants feature a mixture of creative and innovative cuisines that will invigorate your taste buds, however, I decided to take full advantage of their room service to elongate this rarity of relaxation and in such luxury surroundings, who could blame me? After an amazing sleep I was full of energy and promise for the day ahead. La Piazza’s breakfast buffet certainly put an added spring in my step as it has something for every discerning taste, including a large assortment of freshly baked goods, international cold cuts and cheese and a live station for eggs. I opted for a handcrafted cappuccino to accompany my vast breakfast. Restored to its full former glory about a decade ago, Souq Waqif retains its 19th-century flair with traditional Qatari buildings made of mud rendered walls and exposed timber beams. It is one of the region’s best-preserved traditional marketplaces, and a last great bastion of Arabian authenticity in Doha’s modern, quickly evolving landscape. A HEALTHY GOOD BYE

2017

PALLAVI PATIL, Spa Manager at SPA BY CLARINS IN MARSA MALAZ KEMPINSKI shares with us her mindful insight of controlling those ever so prominent hunger pangs, especially this holiday season. It’s around the corner! The time of the year when each day is a celebration and no reason is required. Qatar welcomes a range of festivities in December beginning with “Qatar national day- The pride of the country and a privilege of participation for its residents followed by Christmas and New Year. Each day being a diving indulgence in either the tastiest of Arabic delicacies or the countless cookies and puddings with number of family & friends get-togethers. With a few days of 2017 in hand why not try to bid a healthy farewell? Although a very special time of year, there is often overindulgence and burning the candle at both ends which doesn’t leave us feeling in our best shape. I’ve compiled a few failsafe tips for staying healthy and avoiding that lethargic, bloated feeling. Begin each day with 2 full glasses of water. Whilst coffee may be the first thing you wake up and think about when you have a bit of a sore head, go for water first and rehydrate rather than further dehydrate the body. Plan breakfast, lunch and snacks for the week ahead if you know you’ll be out by night. At least then you know you’ve had 80% of your day with good healthy food to nourish your body. Commit yourself to training with a buddy so you’re made accountable. Having a training buddy is wonderful for so many reason but during the party season it helps when someone can boost your motivation and you can do the same for them. Even if it’s just a walk together, being accountable to someone else means there are no excuses. It’s common to pack on 5-10 pounds during the holiday season, but there are ways you can eat both healthy and well! Know which foods are high in caloric content and low in nutrition. Don’t deprive 86

www.ohlala-magazine.com

yourself of such treats, but indulge in moderation. Eat smaller meals instead of “saving yourself ” for one huge buffet. Opt for healthy options at home, and when visiting others, bring a healthy dish to share. Be careful of liquid calories, including alcoholic beverages. There will be plenty of unhealthy foods on offer during the festive season. I know it will be tempting but try to choose the healthy options. Avoid deep fried foods, white carbs and fatty meats. When you’re at a party, avoiding hanging around the food table. You will be more tempted to eat it when it’s right in front of you. Out of sight, out of mind. Easy done! Holidays can be a stressful time. You may be working, and feel the stress of managing your work duties along with additional commitments to your friends and family. You may feel the financial stress of gifts and the interpersonal stress of conflicts. Try to anticipate sources of stress and develop a plan to manage them. This may involve committing to fewer get-togethers or setting a tighter budget. Don’t feel guilty; you have to take care of yourself before you can take of others. The holiday spirit is about helping others around you, but you also have to make time to take care of yourself. So treat yourself with something over the holidays. It may be something as simple as sleep. Wake up late and enjoy a day of rest; you need it. Sparing some “me time” will surely keep your spirits high for this holiday season. Remember mental happiness is a key to joy. But for now let us bid a healthy farewell to 2017 and welcome the dawn of 2018. Delhi Delights

With a growing number of restaurants in Doha claiming to offer authentic Indian dishes we decided to enjoy an evening at Chingari situated inside the Radisson Blu Hotel, Doha and our tastebuds revelled at such a delectable decision.

A pond full of Koi fish underneath a kitschy footbridge allowed

us to marvel at such splendour as we strutted down to the main entrance of Chingari in our stilettos, after all, this had been coined as our girls-night-out and we were ‘dressed to impress’, but, Chingari definitely received the same memo, as every inch of this restaurant was decorated in an overwhelming, but not garish, authentic indian style. The bar has definitely been set for innovative dining I thought as we were escorted to our table at Doha’s first real Tandoori restaurant, including walls that are lined with plaques and accolades. It’s menu recognises that commitment to excellence, while other curry houses have pages and pages of speciality dishes from some far flung corner, Chingari keeps it relevant with their renowned dishes true to their original origin and the added bonus

that practically no fat is used to cook any tandoor dish. Now, that’s what we like to hear! Glancing over the menu the food is in a very honest price range, and after looking around at other tables I could see that the portions were plentiful and the aromas coming from the kitchen had us salivating. As usual in any Indian restaurant the grills are the base line and here was no different, a delightful array of tandoori kebabs consisting of chicken, lamb, fish tikka and prawns with great spices and great flavour arrived at our table for starters, however, there was nothing basic about this mouthwatering array. Aptly named Chef Jograj’s Special Starter Platter it definitely lives up to its namesake and the live music that was caressing our eardrums only adds to the experience. As we arrived as a trio we decided to each order a different main course so that we could commit ourselves to the whole ‘sharing is caring’ mantra. We decided on three separate dishes of lamb, prawn and chicken so we could trial the most diverse of options. First to grace our table with its presence was the Jhinga Dum Masala in which the tiger prawns were cooked with tomato, onion and tandoor spices, shortly followed by a staple Lamb Curry cooked with a unique blend of spices and last, but certainly not least, was the Chicken Makhanwala. The boneless marinated chunks just melted in our mouths, with the taste of the rich tomato based gravy leaving us making audible notes of appreciation. We of course paired this with an assortment of naan breads, ‘Roti Ka Tokri’, for the obligatory mopping-up of sauces. Our evening’s finale came in the form of an awe inspiring flame show for our ‘snake coffee’ for our nightcap beverages, but, I’m not going to expand on it any further as you’ll need to experience such delights first-hand. Highly recommended with a night filled with girly-giggles, outstanding food and incredible service from the attentive staff. Chingari…? You have our hearts. Pan-Asian

Culinary Master ZENGO, the fusion lovechild of Asian and Latin American Cuisine has revered attention for all the right reasons and we’re feeling broody for an evening full of ambience and delectable dishes. Nestled on the 61st floor of the Kempinski Residences & Suites is Zengo, and

at heights like this, you’re guaranteed to feel on top-form with the restaurant boasting sweeping views over Westbay and The Corniche.Chef Richard Sandoval, whose other restaurants in Doha include Isla and Toro Toro, is the gentleman to thank for their extensive menu, offering a unique spin on authentic Pan-Asian cuisine. You cannot help but admire the inventive interior design with the open plan modern decor. A stunning avian theme throughout whilst also boasting an open timber slot ceiling, housing origami-style bird sculptures that float above guests and also trendy music drifting through the sound system accelerates the ambience of this food haunt immediately. The interior features moody dark woods, a decadent central staircase and dramatic views over the twinkling lights of the city. All of this effortlessly creates the perfect backdrop offering an expressive yet picturesque dining experience. Our knowledgeable waiter, Rahul, served us up not only uniquely plated dishes packed full of flavours, but, also impeccable table-service in plentiful but not overbearing amounts. Hand-muddled drinks only continue the theme of perfect instagrammable creations as I welcomed mine as it came adorned in a cute kimono, complementing the diverse menu further whilst also providing an additional focus on Asian flavours. This was just the start of their handcrafted creations, the food is served on slate-textured plates and is meticulously presented which really heightens the overall experience. My partner was that impressed with said presentation that he joined in posting across his social media platforms, which trust me, is a rare sight. The menu ranges from sushi, sashimi and hand-crafted dim sum to curry dishes, grilled entrees, and wok dishes. Our favourite dish was undoubtedly the tender Beef Short Ribs which was the most perfect thing to have blessed our palettes, as it just melted into our tastebuds but more importantly our memories. The floor-to-ceiling windows allow a dark romantic vibe to ensue which is perfect for any date night and proved a perfect conversation starter after over-indulging on the chocolatey gooey goodness that arose for dessert in the form of Chili Chocolate Pudding. Our dinner was overseen by Asian-motifed vases and other ornate objects lining the walls acting as a finishing embellishment to the resounding hallmark of manicured perfection. We’ve already arranged our next visit, and you should too! For reservations please call: 4405 3560

MISS Ohlala

THERE’S SOMETHING DIFFERENT ABOUT YOU As we catapult into the festive season, we sometimes forget to take care of our body and souls. Miss Ohlala provides her suggestions to help rebalance and recenter your life. READ ON A SUN LOUNGER. Yoga and pilates are great for body and soul, but, in my opinion a morning spent lying on a sun lounger with a good book and no internet access is just as refreshing. We are truly spoilt for choice in the region. Pass me a cold towel if you please...

A GIRLS’ NIGHT OUT. Nothing lifts your spirit like cocktails and tapas with your best girl friends. As the old saying goes, “a problem shared is a problem halved”.

A NEW HAIRCUT. I recently took the plunge and lopped off my tired locks into a “LOB” (or long bob). I instantly felt lighter, younger and reinvigorated. Check out some red carpet styles for inspiration. Emma Stone and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley both know how to carry off beautiful shoulder-length styles. Add a red lip and you are all set.

MOROCCAN HAMAM. Nothing feels better than smooth skin after a Moroccan Hamam and body scrub. Enough said.

NEW SHOES! It is hard to beat retail therapy. I never recommend buying on credit, but saving up for a designer bag or shoes gives me great pleasure. Forget Kit-Kats, Net-aPorter coffee breaks are the best.

BUY A 2018 AGENDA. Start the new year like you mean to carry on. I have a recent addiction to 98

www.ohlala-magazine.com

magnetic “to do” lists and weekly organisers that you can stick on your fridge and then tear off pages. ASOS online stocks some great options, particularly for those of us who have embraced the recent unicorn craze.

SEND A LETTER OR A GIFT. Put your mobile devices down for a while and pick up a pen. There’s nothing I like more than to receive a card or parcel. So think of some faraway friends who might need a pick-me-up and send them a surprise card or a parcel. Perhaps your favourite book, a lipstick or some stationary. There’s nothing that beats the act of giving to put a smile on your face.

REPURPOSE JEWELLERY. Some of us are lucky enough to inherit a brooch or ring from a granny or great aunt that is very special to us, but, it’s not in a modern style that we would ordinarily wear. It seems a shame for such sentimental items to sit in a drawer indefinitely, so consider taking them to a jeweller to give them a new lease of life. Have the stones from a ring reset into a pendant for example.

“MANI PEDI”. There is nothing more depressing than untidy nails. Luckily having a regular manicure-pedicure is considered the norm here and there are a plethora of salons to choose from.

GIVE TO CHARITY. Make a donation to a charity that you support. Alternatively one of the most personal gifts you can give is to invite someone into your home to share a festive dinner. Identify someone who would otherwise be alone over the festive season, and invite them to be part of your family.
