Editor’s Letter The month of love is also when we celebrate the concept of beauty. We bring an array of new products, but we also discuss the beauty of love, stunning places to visit and the pleasure of sharing delightful meals with friends and family. It’s all part of the ‘beauty of life’, enjoying every minute of it and making the most of every situation. It’s always possible to see positive aspects – if we look for them. Our fashion pages bring a classic winter trend, a colour combo to paint your romantic Valentine date dinner, and lots of vibrant hues to enlighten our not so gloomy cold season (pg14). Timeless and instantly recognisable jewellery is in our Cartier spread this month. History and heritage are combined and reflected into refreshing and sharp designs. Embrace the art of fine jewellery and watches with us (pg32). This month, new beauty products and scents entice our senses (pg46). OHLALA also chats with the founder of the French beauty label La bouche rouge for an insight into his sustainability-driven brand (pg52). After months of anticipation, we finally announced the winners of the OHLALA Spa & Wellness Awards 2021. Find out if your favourite beauty haven is on the list (pg58). Congratulations to the winners! You deserve all the recognition. Scotland is our destination this month, and we have a genuine description of all the must-visit and hidden spots in Edinburgh and the Highlands – the words are from an insider (pg68). We head to an Italian eatery for comfort food with a Michelin-like twist at Veritas (pg72). And driving a beautifully designed car (pg78) is all we need to end this issue dedicated to all the good things in town at our fingertips! Happy Valentine's Day!

Wintertime and boots walk hand-in-hand, or should we say foot-in-foot? To keep your fashionista wardrobe updated, opt for chunky ones. They can be a casual pick and a bit difficult to style, but we come to your rescue! Here are some ideas. 1. Chunky boots don’t all come in black. You can explore different colours to achieve the perfect composition for your look. These red ones are from Coach. 2. Play with contrasts. Wear a flowy floral maxi dress or long and lightweight skirt with your chunky footwear for a sweet rebel aesthetic. This piece is from the Tory Burch AW2021 collection. 3. Culottes are a comfy and stylish bottom that pairs well with chunkier footwear. You can add some tights to make it a wintery outfit or flaunt some skin – both options work well. These are from Paul Smith. 4. Are you looking for a more stylish way of wearing them? Choose a denim jumpsuit to team up with your thick shoes. Stella McCartney has various jeans options that perfectly match this style. 5. Wear your boots with a long coat. You can opt for sweatpants or jeans and a cotton T-shirt to wear under your overcoat. We were inspired by Hailey Bieber’s always refreshing style. 24

The E.L.V. DENIM (East London Vintage Denim) brand was founded by designer Anna Foster and follows the concept of a zero-waste brand. The label’s trademark is its contrasting denim trousers and jackets made with upcycled denim. The brand makes unwanted material viable again and, unlike traditional designers who create a piece and then find the material, E.L.V. DENIM finds the perfect material first, then decides what can be made from it. The denim is sourced from warehouses around the UK, washed by a launderette in London and dropped off at the E.L.V. DENIM studio in an electric car. All parts of the jeans are either used to make new products, given to a local artist or donated to art schools around the UK for sustainability projects. Being a seasonless brand, E.L.V. DENIM favours new design developments over creating whole new collections. The brand is available in leading online stores such as NET-A-PORTER and MATCHESFASHION.

Tommy Hilfiger has partnered with eight user-generated content designers from the Roblox community to create and promote a Tommy X Roblox Creators collection. Roblox is a popular global online platform and storefront where users play games and share interactive online experiences. The collection brings 30 digital fashion items that people can use to dress their avatars within Roblox. “I love how the brand has already been unofficially adopted into the Roblox platform, with users creating their own Tommy Hilfiger styles,” said Tommy Hilfiger. “We couldn’t pass the chance of partnering with some of these fans to take this selfexpression one step further, empowering them to bring their creative twist to official brand styles.” The creators were given the freedom to re-interpret some of the brand’s iconic pieces, with their individual twist, in both 2D and 3D digital items. The virtual Tommy X Roblox Creators digital collection is available for purchase in the Roblox Avatar Marketplace.

THE CULTURE of Design Over the years, Cartier has produced a multitude of memorable creations that pass the test of time and are instantly recognised. An ode to the brand’s mastery and refined expertise in the world of jewels and timepieces.
32
www.ohlalamag.net
For Cartier, it all starts with the design. The brand has unique and instantly recognisable collections that are based on four main principles of conception: the purity of the line, the accuracy of the shape, the precision of proportions and the precious details. It is Cartier’s desire to reduce each piece to its purest form, focusing on the structure. The jewellery piece or watch has an easy-to-read and instantly understandable style bringing a simplicity that makes them appreciable at first glance. The brand measures the effects of symmetry, parallelism or asymmetry that each shape offers, be it a square or a circle, when it comes to the precision of the creation. By adding perspective and depth, and respecting the curves and lines, the result is a natural movement and re-creation of a new form. Proportion relies on technical innovation, ergonomics research and understanding the piece’s function. The sharpness in proportions is achieved by balancing the lines, shapes and volume. All the elements must work well together for comfort, in harmony with movement. And the fourth principle is the cherished details. They must have a meaning and not be featured aimlessly or artificially. Beloved Objects A collection of seven designs stands the test of time. They are classic, eternal and essential. They can be reinvented and continue to inspire conversations, an endless source of creative energy that Cartier dares to develop over time. A cultural and emotional heritage, these pieces are heirlooms. This family of watches and jewellery, a remarkable collection in the history of jewellery and watchmaking, affirms Cartier’s original intention to create designer pieces. Ballon Bleu De Cartier The watch was created in 2007 from a new vision of roundness that, for the Cartier designers, involved giving volume to the circle. Doubly convex, its shape strikes the perfect balance between line and volume. Juste un Clou Cartier enhances the design of a basic shape by transforming a simple nail into a piece of jewellery. Clean, radical and uncompromising lines, the precision of this bracelet’s proportions, created for the maison in New York in the 1970s by Aldo Cipullo, allows the oval piece to hug the wrist. Tank In 1917, Louis Cartier took inspiration from the purity of the line to create a new watch shape. Inspired by the design of a combat vehicle viewed from above, this watch follows one clear graphics principle: the brancards were the treads and the case was the turret. Trinity The Trinity ring is constructed with clean lines and perfect proportions and made up of three intertwined, mobile bands in three shades of gold. A design created by Louis Cartier in 1924. Panthère De Cartier First created in 1983, the Panthère watch is a piece of art: the square case with rounded angles, the seamless curve of the horns and the visible rivets. The timepiece takes its name from the bracelet: ultraflexible echoing the movements of the maison’s emblematic animal. Love Love is the expression of Cartier’s design vision. Clean lines mean perfection: an oval bracelet created by Aldo Cipullo, in New York in 1969, composed of two rigid and flat circular arcs that must be screwed together using a suitable screwdriver. Santos De Cartier Created in 1904, the Santos watch design is based on the concept of form, the taste for minimalism, the precision of proportions and, finally, an eye for detail. For the first time, Cartier created a square watch for the wrist at a time when the pocket watch was round.

alérie Messika is the creative mind behind this dynamic and contemporary brand. She has always loved the fashion world and finds lots of inspiration in this universe. Her jewels revolve around the timeless, easy-to-wear diamond, which is ever more modern and innovative. Valérie is always faithful to her instinct to find a personality and figure that best represents the Messika woman. “I wanted to illustrate a subtle alliance between grace and strength and capture an image of an alpha woman with a mysterious and hypnotic aura; Kendall perfectly embodied that for me,” says Valérie. The model is one of the most sought after faces across the most cuttingedge catwalks. Dubbed as the ‘fashion icon of the decade’ in 2017, Kendall remains in demand by all the leading fashion houses. In her element with Messika jewellery, which she wears both for runway shows as well as in her private life, the model embodies the Messika woman through her effortless sensibilities, her unadulterated freedom, and her modernity. “I am very happy to have been chosen by Messika for its new campaign. Its jewellery has always reminded me of Paris, one of my favourite cities. During the shoot, I was able to see so many beautiful pieces, which gave me a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship of the house that goes into even the smallest earring,” affirms Kendall. The campaign was shot by the Australian photographer Chris Colls, who combines the aesthetics of a fashion photograph with moving elements for a multi-degree approach. Multiple jewels stacked across the fingers, wrists, decolletage and neck dance in sunlight reflections and give rhythm to the looks. The photographs merge Kendall with the natural infinity effect of the landscape, and it captures the immensity of the sea joining the sky – a manifesto of freedom. Whatever her choice, her attitude reflects her brilliance. Through this campaign, the maison reconfirms its bond with women. Messika creations are easy to wear and combine and through every piece, a sole ambition is shared: to encourage confidence in feeling ever free.

T
he jewellery brand has introduced its latest collection to the international market: Tiffany Knot. A salute to the Big Apple, with designs inspired by the chain-link – seen frequently around the city's streets. The familiar and rugged shape has been turned into an item of glamour and finesse, incorporating the city's heart into the collection. The Tiffany Knot is characterised by the strong sense of self and a particular state of mind that New Yorkers embrace. They thrive on both individualism and a sense of collective identity, which is the spirit behind the jewellery pieces. The collection brings many items that can be worn as both a statement of rebellion and a talisman of connection.

The designs showcase a mirage of smooth shapes and jagged forms with a selection of bracelets, rings, necklaces, pendants and earrings. All items feature the signature graphic knot motif using various metals, including 18-carat yellow gold, rose gold and pavé diamond iterations. The 18-carat gold knot on bracelets conceals the clasp, appearing as one long continuous design. However, the most prized piece in the collection is the double-wrap choker hand set with over 300 diamonds. Tiffany & Co. was founded in New York in 1837 by Charles Lewis Tiffany and has since become an international luxury jeweller acclaimed for its elegance and fine craftsmanship. With around 5,000 skilled artisans, the company is dedicated to superlative quality and exquisite design, which is particularly apparent in the latest collection.

om Ford expands its olfactory collection with a provocative scent trilogy evoking three significant destinations. The fashion label invites you into its Private Rose Garden, in which each scent is crafted with an exclusive rose-on-rose distillation inspired by the rare flowers in the designer’s own garden. The collection of fragrances is composed by Rose D’Amalfi, Rose De Chine and Rose de Russie. Rose D’Amalfi is infused with Italian bergamot and mandarin and spiced by baies roses, eliciting a wave of captivating, softly sensuous feeling, which recollects the Amalfi Coast atmosphere. Rose De Chine brings a rich, unadulterated rose contrasting with Chinese golden peony notes, while cistus absolute and myrrh add a smoky tone to the bouquet. Rose De Russie blends the essence of Russian black leather with intense florals for an opulent and dramatic fragrance. Enhanced Eye-Con Looking for a luminous eye contour? Lancôme has launched its ultimate treatment for the area – the new Advanced Génifique Yeux. 50
www.ohlalamag.net
T
he focus on the eyes is more evident than ever. The constant use of masks makes eyes the only visible feature on the face. Strong and emotive, the eye contour is also delicate and fragile. The atmosphere under the mask is warmer and wetter and generates condensation that rises towards the eye contour. This can affect the skin barrier function and possibly unbalance the microbiome in the area, which is particularly sensitive to temperature and humidity variations. In 2019, Lancôme unveiled its Advanced Génifique Serum, and this product pioneered a new era in effective skincare using microbiome science. The brand is now launching a new formula in its Advanced Génifique Yeux that cares for the sensitive eye contour area. Lancôme Research Centre has revealed that the skin around the eyes has a specific microbiome. It is also, on average, three times thinner than the rest of the face and can easily dehydrate, resulting in faster and earlier ageing signs. The product is enriched with a unique complex of seven pre and probiotic fractions for its complementary action on the skin microbiome and its environment. It also contains hyaluronic acid, vitamin CG (a derivative of vitamin C that boosts collagen production) and a blend of active ingredients dedicated to the delicate eye contour. It allows the area to recover faster from external aggressions. After using one jar, it promises to diminish the appearance of dark circles and promote plumper and radiant eyes with fewer lines. The improved Advanced Génifique Yeux has an iridescent pearly white colour and is made with a rich, silky gel-cream texture that feels velvety to the touch with rapid absorption. It envelops the skin with a weightless film that protects and hydrates without leaving a sticky sensation.

Insight
Beyond
Red Lips The beauty brand La bouche rouge is debuting in the Middle East. To know more about the world of this unique label, OHLALA spoke to Nicolas Gerlier, CEO and founder.
L
NICOLAS GERLIER
a bouche rouge is a French beauty brand that was created after its founder became convinced that our generation could not continue to think, produce and consume like previous ones. With this concern in mind, he launched a new beauty model with a manifesto object – a lipstick. La bouche rouge stands for ‘red lips’ in French but also for having a voice to strike a strong message. Nicolas tells us how he is changing his approach to the beauty industry’s harmful effects on nature by creating conscious products. La bouche rouge believes sustainably designed, well-crafted, and refillable objects will outlive plastic alternatives.
52
www.ohlalamag.net
OHLALA - Changing the world for the better is something most people want but find challenging to apply in their lives. What made you take this step forward in creating a brand that cares for the environment? How did you overcome the challenges? Nicolas Gerlier - La bouche rouge’s vision is to conceive a new form of luxury – one that creates the desire to consume more sustainably, thanks to beautifully designed objects that endure. All our products are refillable and in our packaging, the materials we use are infinitely recyclable or compostable. Of course, this requires continuous innovation to create ever-more sustainable solutions. But we are dedicated to crafting products that preserve the earth’s resources. By drawing on traditional French craftsmanship, clean formulas with up to 91% active skincare ingredients and an unwavering commitment to sustainability, we are helping others find a simple, pleasurable way to tend to their beauty while caring for the environment. OHLALA – Was creating La bouche rouge a wow moment, or did it take a long time to conceive? Nicolas - I had been working in the beauty industry for over 10 years and, in this period, I saw it evolve, transform and fluctuate. It came to a point where I felt there was an overwhelming number of fake claims and promises regarding plastic use by brands. As a result, I decided to create my own model, adhering to a single conviction: to merge luxury and sustainability. OHLALA - What do you think are the most significant changes in the traditional way of producing beauty products that you made when conceptualising La bouche rouge? Nicolas - The beauty industry is the third most pollutant in terms of plastic, and we must tackle this before it’s too late for our planet – 83% of the earth’s water is polluted with microplastics. It is incredibly harmful to the environment and
toxic for the body yet remains present in most beauty products. There has been greater awareness around this these last few years, but not enough is being done. That’s why La bouche rouge is committed to avoiding the usage of microplastics in everything from our products to our packaging. OHLALA - Will you keep looking for ways of creating new products focusing on more sustainable production? Any new projects on the horizon that you can share with us? Nicolas - All our formulas are conceived in our proprietary labs in France to provide the highest quality and attention to detail. What’s more, we consistently advance in our research to further improve upon them. For instance, our lipstick formula is now in its third generation, integrating a powerful, anti-ageing seaweed that is harvested by hand in St. Suliac, France. We also chose to replace beeswax with vegetable wax, which is vegan and ensures higher traceability when sourced. Our goal is to guarantee the highest level of sustainability, from our sourcing to cultivation, formulation, packaging and beyond. OHLALA - Beauty is taken very seriously in the Middle East, and women here love to try new products. Are you planning on creating special collections to cater to the region’s needs? The heat during the warm months can ruin makeup pretty quickly, and comfort and lasting products are everyone’s favourites. Nicolas - We appreciate these women’s desire to uncover new products. We are committed to ensuring our clean make-up creations are innovative and entirely suitable for their skin. Each of La bouche rouge’s formulas provides the perfect balance of naturality, high-intensity colour and skincare performance. In addition, their cases are crafted to be true objets de beauté – fine leather pieces that are to be used daily and cherished for life thanks to their refillable, recyclable format. By merging these two aspects, we are developing a new beauty ritual, which is revolutionary in itself – this is how we are pioneering the beauty of tomorrow.

I
love the InterContinental Doha Beach & Spa. It’s there every morning when I open the curtains and look out from my West Bay apartment, onto a blue sea. I spent a gluttonous week of quarantine there in 2021, gaining a few pounds and enjoying every day. It’s stood the test of time in this city, with consistent luxury and top-class service. I’ve lived in Doha for almost a decade, ‘firsts’ are hard to find. But today, for the first time, I’m visiting Spa InterContinental – and I feel a little giddy. The spa is accessed through a cool, marble corridor on the ground floor. Sheer net curtains draped on either side provide a soft touch. Along the way I glimpse an unoccupied treatment room or two thick white towels, the flicker of a candle. Citrus and herb scents drift towards me, subtle and enticing. Now I’m in the mood! There’s a lovely water feature in the spa reception, a glass chandelier floating above, like water droplets suspended mid-fall. It’s all very Zen, love it. The staff greet me warmly, and introduce the Director of Spa, Arie. All glowing skin and serene composure, she reassures me she’s a regular user of the spa’s skincare products. We decide upon my treatment for the afternoon, and are both very excited that I’ll be the first person to try their 90-minute Warm Herbal Massage – officially launched this month as part of Spa InterContinental’s revamped menu. Designed to soothe a tired body (fantastic!) and exhausted mind (even better) with aromatic oils, it also improves skin appearance.

For my second treatment, I choose the 60-minute Oxygen Rejuvenate Infusion facial by Intraceuticals – a calming and hydrating treatment that targets fine lines. Yes, I do need this. Let the afternoon commence! Grace, my therapist, is extremely professional and welcoming. With light, breezy conversation she takes us to my private treatment room, passing the beautiful indoor swimming pool, plunge pool, sauna and steam room accessible for spa guests. My room is a sanctuary. Low light, soft scent and relaxing meditational music. Before the massage, Grace performs the spa’s signature foot bath ritual. My feet are placed in a bronze bowl of warm soapy water, washed, and natural sugar scrub applied meticulously. Every single treatment starts with the foot bath ritual, Grace explains, no matter if it’s a 30-minute or a 180-minute service. Sparkly clean feet and fresh as a daisy, I’m ready for my herbal massage. The treatment bed is top-notch. With multiple adjustment options, and a soft mattress – even fussy folk like me cannot help but feel supported and relaxed. Oh, and it’s heated. Bliss! Grace first applies a steamed pouch to my back in slow rhythmic motions. The pouch is filled with kaffir lime, wild turmeric, lemongrass, tamarind, acacia and camphor, releasing an intense aroma as relaxing as the hot pressure. She follows with a massage to the area, promoting absorption of the aromatic oils, and allowing my skin to benefit from the herbs. Grace expertly works the compress over my whole body, paying special attention to zones of tense muscle. My body feels nourished, relaxed and peaceful.

We soon start my Oxygen Rejuvenate Infusion facial. Cleansing takes five minutes, after which Rejuvenate Enzyme Exfoliant is applied. I can’t see it yet, but my skin already feels softer, and smells extremely fresh! The Rejuvenate Serum rich in hyaluronic acid is applied through a machine that works with oxygen pressure and takes 35 minutes. It’s a buzzy, pleasant sensation. A hydration gel is applied, followed by Rejuvenate Moisture Binding Cream and an invigorating contour massage around my cheekbones. Lastly, hyaluronic-pumped eye gel is smoothed over, adding a zingy boost to the final stage. The treatment visibly improves the skin’s texture, radiance and vitality. It hydrates and delivers potent anti-ageing ingredients to create the perfect canvas for make-up application. It also revives and deliver antioxidants to the skin, provides a lifting and toning effect while extending the Intraceuticals treatment result. Fast forward, and I’m bright-faced, sipping fresh-leaf peppermint tea in the beautiful spa lounge, browsing Spa InterContinental’s menu for my next visit… The verdict? Real results, it’s why I came. My skin is lifted, hydrated, and luminous, and my muscles revitalised. It’s the ultimate post-spa duo - I feel fantastic and look great too!

Escapes
The Land of
Highs and Lows Scotland is famous around the world for its noisy bagpipes, incomprehensible accents and eerie legends, not to mention being the back-garden of England. However, a trip to this beautiful country proves to be so much more – as uncovered by Amal Sarhan.
68
www.ohlalamag.net
A
n axis of history, philosophy and art, Scotland is a country saturated with culture and heritage, with famous writers and thinkers such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Robert Burns, David Hume and Adam Smith. Home of a host of native languages, including Gaelic and Scots, as well as traditional ceilidh dances and tartan clothing, Scotland is imbued with a unique identity and culture. Its national flower is the thistle, an unusual thorny flower characteristic of Scottish resilience and beauty. We start at Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital, and by far one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Known for its gusty winds and hilly slopes, this layered city is a perfect brew of urban and rural. Home to magnificent architectural buildings and a cultural hub of art, music and culture, you can also find serene and luscious greenery around every corner, as vast green spaces freckle even the innermost parts of the city. It is affectionately called ‘Auld Reekie’ by locals, coined due to the persistent smoke that once hung over the city caused by open coal and peat fires. It would be a great injustice to begin without the momentous national gem housed within the city: Edinburgh Castle. Towering above the metropolis with an air of command and unwavering strength, this 900-year-old stronghold can be admired from anywhere in the city and from every angle. Situated on top of Castle Rock and accessible through a steep walk up the Royal Mile and High Street, it offers a breathtaking view of the city below. The Royal Mile is the main street of Edinburgh’s Old Town, lined with local shops and buzzing with the sound of bagpipes.
www.ohlalamag.net
69
Directly below the castle lies the well-known Princes Street Gardens, an extensive verdant park at the heart of the city where you can picnic and relax. It is also home to numerous sights, such as the famous Scott Monument (built in tribute to the writer, Sir Walter Scott and the secondlargest monument dedicated to a writer in the world). As well as the Parish Church of St. Cuthbert, the embellished flower clock, and the glistening Ross Fountain, a bright 19th-century turquoise structure garnished with streaks of gold, a marvellous spectacle with the castle high above in the background. If you are lucky, you might have a squirrel or two approaching to say hello. Edinburgh’s weaving Water of Leith is a sight to behold. Lacing through the city, a walk by this meandering river offers a sense of serenity amidst the bustle of the streets. It will also eventually lead you to a petite retreat named the Dean Village, also known as ‘Water of Leith Village’, a centuries-old grain mill village with historical buildings and houses, the most notable of which is the Well Court, due to its quaint charm. Situated nearby are the Scottish National Galleries of Modern Art, lavish estates which store expansive collections of contemporary artworks.

www.ohlalamag.net
The Meadows is a great green expanse not far from the main university of Edinburgh and frequented by students. Entwined with bike lanes and lined with beautiful trees, it is the perfect spot for a picnic, a fun day of frisbee or a casual bike ride. The most beautiful part of this park is unmistakably the cherry blossoms that line Coronation Walk. Full-bloom in spring, this pink canopy is magical to stroll through. Arguably one of the most prominent sights in Edinburgh is Calton Hill, home to the city’s collection of historical monuments, including the incomplete National Monument – inspired by the Parthenon in Athens, the Nelson Monument, the City Observatory and the Dugald Stewart Monument. A five-minute hike from Regent’s Street, it offers an impeccable panoramic view of the city and its great landmarks such as the Royal Mile, the Scottish Parliament and Waverley Train Station. Another major Edinburgh favourite that can be viewed from Calton Hill is Arthur’s Seat, a dormant volcano and another popular hiking destination offering the most outstanding view of the city below. Close by is the Crags, a jagged rock and popular spot for students and youngsters to watch fireworks on Hogmanay or Bonfire Night.
TRAVEL
Escapes
Right below is Holyrood Park, the biggest green space in the centre of the city. It is home to Holyrood Palace, founded in 1128 and the official residence of the Queen in Scotland. Mary Queen of Scots, a prominent figure in Scottish history and a symbol of feminine power in the country and worldwide, lived most of her life in the palace. Enclosed is The Queen’s Gallery, featuring works from the Royal Collection. Just opposite Greyfriars Kirk is one of Scotland’s most prized gems, the National Museum. From history to fashion to the animal kingdom and technology, this national landmark is a cornerstone of Scottish intellectualism and academic excellence. Current exhibitions include ‘The Typewriter Revolution’, ‘Inspiring Walter Scott’ and ‘Audubon’s Birds of America’. Head down here for a fun day of learning with the family. For a most memorable and special afternoon delight, visit the Scotsman’s century-old Grand Café for some High Tea with friends or family. And for some traditional pies, head down to South Bridge’s Piemaker, established in 1995, where you will find an assortment of cup-sized pastries. The Scottish Highlands is a famous destination, with a host of castles from ancient times, boundless national parks and preserved land, dotted with hairy coos (cows), furry wildcats, red deer and endearing little puffins almost everywhere you look. Seamed with deep lochs and heavenly mountains, this northern area is the ultimate escape into nature.
The most famous lochs include Loch Ness, which is 230m deep, familiar due to the myth of the Loch Ness monster (affectionately referred to as Nessie by Scots), and Loch Lomond, a subject of the eminent Scottish tune The Bonnie Banks o’ Loch Lomond. Directly adjacent to Loch Ness is the town of Inverness, located on River Ness, whence its name is derived, along with the loch. A long-established centre of the Highlands, the quaint town is home to medieval ruins and prehistoric sites, including Urquhart Castle. Walking through the cobbled streets of Inverness, you will hear the sound of traditional folk songs, the beat of a quivering tambourine, the strumming of an old guitar and the stomping of feet as people dance the night away. If you are lucky, you might hear the Scottish favourite, Auld Lang Syne, a sentimental and heartfelt tune which is sung the world over on New Year’s Eve. Before you leave this beautiful town, make sure to take a stroll on Ness Walk, which runs along the river, and visit the Ness Islands that dot it. The Isle of Skye, in particular, is known for its otherworldly scenery and natural wonder. Just off the west coast of the mainland and easily accessible via the Skye Bridge, this isle is definitely a must-visit. Head towards Portree, its main city, where you can walk through narrow streets, visit local shops and enjoy traditional seafood dishes at a restaurant by the Portree harbour.

ow. That’s always my first word when I walk into the lobby of Al Messila, a Luxury Collection Resort and Spa, Doha. But tonight, I don’t have time to gaze at the stratospheric ceilings and funky lighting, because we’ve got a table at Veritas – the hotel’s signature Italian restaurant run by Michelin-starred Executive Chef Pino Lavarra. My

first word when I walk into Veritas? Aah. It’s just so lovely, you see. The wood-panelled walls add warmth. Velvet chairs covered in shades of peacock and cream add glamour. An outstanding pianist fills the restaurant with soothing music. There’s even low-level lighting, which I love. And the seating allows for safe distancing from your neighbours without losing the warm atmosphere.

The front-of-house staff are super friendly. Issam, our waiter, is charming, informative and funny, helpfully pointing out that there are photos on Instagram of the dishes and answering our many questions. He brings peach fizz welcome mocktails, bursting with ginger zinginess, to kickstart our palates. And then there’s delicious warm sourdough that we absolutely wouldn’t have demolished if we’d known what was coming: the amazing amuse bouche. It’s seriously the best washing line ever. Twice-fried spaghetti balls – crispy, light, airy and delicately seasoned with Parmesan and pepper – are pegged out to dry. Below, there’s an array of finger food including Arancini filled with saffron rice and beef ragu – to call it a flavour explosion would be underselling it. The menu features dishes from all over Italy, not just the Michelin-starred chef ’s hometown of Naples. The Burrata – smooth, creamy and served with truffle cream and a lively tomato salad – is from the north of the country while the Pappardelle con Funghi (made especially for us) – wide ribbons of pasta with mushrooms, cream and hints of basil and sage – is from the deep south. Both are delicious.

The Costolette Di Agnello arrives in a blaze of glory. Delicate lamb chops are presented in a glass bell jar, hidden within a swirl of charcoal-scented smoke. When the lid is lifted, it’s pure theatre. (It smells pretty good too.) You’d be forgiven for thinking that a Michelin-starred chef might serve tiny stacks of food on enormous plates. Not a bit of it. The portions at Veritas are perfectly sized. The Parmigiana di Melanzane – baked eggplant with tomato sauce, mozzarella, Parmigiano and burrata sauce – alone is proof that diners are not going to go home hungry. (They’d also be wise to avoid lunch.)
74
www.ohlalamag.net
When he visits our table to see if we’re enjoying the meal – we absolutely are – Executive Chef Pino Lavarra explains that at Veritas, he wants to showcase the beauty of Italian food. But that’s not all. He also wants to give food a twist. As he put it, Chef Pino wants to ‘shake the tradition’. He tells us that he knows many diners go to Italian restaurants because the food is comforting. But he can’t resist putting a new spin on old favourites, creating meals that are familiar, delicious and surprising. His Lasagna Alla Bolognese is a perfect example. Instead of the meal diners might expect, Chef Pino’s lasagna is layers of fresh pasta, thyme cream and Bolognese sauce, fashioned into a crispy, rose-shaped masterpiece. ‘It’s fantastic Italian food, lightly twisted,’ says the chef. Finally, there are the spectacular desserts. The Vanilla Panna Cotta with Wild Berries Sauce has a tantalising wobble and tastes utterly splendid. The Millefoglie is crispy puff pastry sandwiched together with just-ahint-of-lemon custard. Perfect. Veritas might have the aah factor. But it has plenty of wow too.

ince the 1940s, Ferrari have produced some of the most exclusive and sought-after road sports cars on the planet. Few other motorcar manufacturers have been able to match the popularity and success of this highly celebrated brand, a truth that becomes obvious the moment you stand in front of one of their glorious creations. OHLALA was recently invited to test drive the latest Ferrari Roma, thanks to the exceptional team at Ferrari Middle East, and to be honest, we can’t stop talking about it! As soon as the 2021 Roma came into view, we knew we were in for a treat. This new Ferrari with its signature Italian styling is characterised by its clean design, elegant volumes and harmonious proportions. The master designers
at Ferrari have removed any and all unnecessary detailing, leaving behind a classic looking sports car, reminiscent of the carefree lifestyle of 1950s and ‘60s Rome, thus the name, ‘Roma’. At the front end, a new radiator concept takes centre stage, complemented by the full-LED adaptive headlights that are harmoniously traversed by a horizontal light strip, leading the eye to the subtle prancing horse badge, set like a jewel at the front of the vehicle. Long, ultra-sleek lines sweeping from bonnet to boot highlight the shapely flanks as well as the compact, set-back cabin. At the back end, the wraparound screen incorporates an active aero device, while the twin taillight assembly and dual twin exhaust system finish off the impressive exterior design with a flourish.
“Ferrari, as expected, has spared no expense in ensuring the new Roma has one of the most beguiling interiors available on the market.”

Slipping into the comfy and supportive, multi-adjustable front sport seats, we were immediately taken by Ferrari’s dual cockpit concept, consisting of two separate cells, one for the driver and one for the passenger. As we sat in silence, taking in all the luxurious detailing, we could see that Ferrari, as expected, has spared no expense in ensuring the new Roma has one of the most beguiling interiors available on the market. All materials, trimmings and finishes are of a superior quality and the layout itself couldn’t have been designed better. Boot wise, the new Roma has a capacity of 345 litres, not bad for a two-seater coupé. The development of the interior took its lead from the complete redesign of the Human Machine Interface (HMI). The state-of-the-art steering wheel houses all of the car’s main commands, actioned by touch-sensitive controls. This design follows Ferrari’s philosophy of ‘Eyes on the road, hands on the wheel’. All of the new Roma’s necessary information can be accessed through the impressive, 16-inch digital instrument cluster. Additionally, we found the 8.4-inch vertical screen housed in the central display, along with the new passenger display, to be highly intuitive and easy to navigate.

As satisfying as both the exterior and interior inspections were, the highlight of our day was engaging the ignition. The sound of the V8 - 90° turbo engine reverberated across the parking area and turned the heads of all those within earshot. This beast of an engine boasts a displacement of 3,855cc, a maximum power output of 456kW at 5,750 – 7,500rpm and a maximum torque of 760Nm at 3,000 – 5,750rpm. Furthermore, the new and improved Roma can bullet from 0-100km/h in a mere 3.4 seconds, from 0-200km/h in just 9.3 seconds and boasts a top speed of no less than 320wkm/h! With all of this power on offer, Ferrari have included a cutting-edge vehicle dynamics system to ensure the driver is in complete control at all times. This system includes the Side Slip Control 6.0 with five-position manettino and Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer which controls yaw angle by hydraulically adjusting brake pressure at the callipers. The suspension, handling and overall drivability of the Roma is amongst the very best we have experienced and we thoroughly enjoyed the entire journey. The fact that the designers have included a wide array of safety features throughout the vehicle only adds to the comfortability factor and allows you to relax and enjoy the phenomenal driving experience all the more.

Though love may not be as it seems, it still holds as the highest form of beauty.
KAROLINA GRABOWSKA ON PEXELS
Love is often portrayed as a fantastical whirlwind romance, with butterflies and roses and ice cream on noses. We see it everywhere: in movies, songs, and the stories we tell one another. It’s the highest romantic ideal — the lofty picture of togetherness and happiness. But submerging oneself into the most admired human emotions will yield a paradox of unfamiliar and strange feelings. We start to think to ourselves, “but love was supposed to be nicer”. The rosey images of love shatter as, all around us, relationships break down, couples married for decades divorce, and a once happy pair of smiles turns into two not-so-happy ones. A host of philosophers and respected writers have written about this emotion throughout history. They can offer great insight into the meandering and labyrinthine paths of love, with an emphasis on its more troubling and not-so-rosey sides as an ode to its everlasting beauty and power. Thinkers such as Khalil Gibran, Jalal Ad-Din Rumi, Leo Tolstoy, Rainer Maria Rilke and Susan Sontag purport that suffering and hardship are essential ingredients of love. People assume the start of a relationship means an end to pain, loneliness and isolation, but many will beg to differ. All these things remain part of the experience of living and are especially characteristic of love, the most tormenting emotion we can feel for another person. Love is fated to be imperfect, incomplete and flawed because the human condition is essentially imperfect, too. Anyone who has trod the difficult path of love is familiar with its agonising challenges, its cavernous afflictions, its lip-biting regrets. But it is precisely because of its defects and hardships that it is such a prized sentiment. Therein lies the beauty and honour of love.
