Editor’s Letter I’ve just had a major overhaul on my limp and lifeless tresses which have now seen them transform to a midlength bob with more layers, to allow for texture on my inconceivably fine strands. I’m all about low maintenance when it comes to my hair, and I found myself reflecting on the month of love as a way to do something for myself - so here I am - ACTUALLY taking the time rather than just talking about it. Speaking of reflection, I think a lot of people love fashion because it is about embracing their personality through what they wear. I love the transformative quality, the effect that an item of clothing can have on the way people see you and the way you might see yourself. There’s something about the right pair of pants or a fabulous pair of shoes that can bring out a confidence in you that you didn’t realise you had. On a more personal level, the process of finding things that flatter you or others can be a fun experience on its own. Figuring out your colours, the silhouettes and shapes that flatter you, and the things that make you feel the most comfortable is fun for many people in itself. That is all we can do: try things, and see what sticks. Just remember, there’s no one way to go through life. Have fun and live love in the moment.

current capsule is of pant-suits for women and I believe I make racy clothes which kind of give me an edge in the Indian market too. Do you see Qatar as a possible market for your brand? Qatar is very progressive when it comes to fashion as I see that the women here are very keen and up-to-date on the trends. With my aesthetics and sensibility, I believe my market is huge and I definitely want to explore my options. I see stores like Harvey Nichols and that’s the type of place I see my clothes selling and I want to explore my options with that. We sell to many other countries in the Gulf too, so, Qatar is the definite next option. What does a Namrata Joshipura Gown always have? Embellishments. If there is something that I cannot live without, it’s shine and sparkle. My middle name is Namrata Sequins Joshipura. What has been the toughest point in your career? That would definitely be the finale of India Fashion Week a couple of years ago when my show stopper, Kangana Ranaut, tripped during her ramp walk. Since you are only as good as your last show, the media nitpicked that moment and tore us down. It was not just about one comment, it was about sensationalising that moment and putting it on repeat. At that time, I got very upset and definitely had my weakest moment. However, at the post-show conference, the actress simply shrugged it away and publicly apologised, which was not needed or asked for. That was a huge moment for me, then and there,

A maestro at blending comfort and fashion, NAMRATA JOSHIPURA is all about the modern, contemporary woman with a hint of sparkle. ANUSHAY TAIMUR KHAN sat down with the designer and heard it all from the power achiever herself.

e did some digging and found out that Fashion Design was not your first love! How did this all begin? I was in college studying Commerce and playing hockey at a state level when I realised that this was not my true calling. I felt like I needed to be in a profession that was more hands-on and practical. I confided in my mother about it, and she was the one who guided me the rest of the way. She told me about a new fashion institute that had opened with the help of FIT New York and persuaded me to give it a try. I did three years of fashion and one year of production there and that is pretty much how my journey started. We are very impressed with the collection you have for the Design District at Shop Qatar. Can you tell us the inspiration behind it? I believe that I am a contemporary Indian designer, so, I do not do traditional Indian clothes. I simply love to experiment with embellishments on jumpsuits, dresses, and gowns. In addition to my 2019 capsule, I have displayed some classic Namrata Joshipura gowns as well. How do you stand out amongst the crowd? I think I am quite daring. I experiment and do things which Indian designers don’t necessarily do. I don’t play hard on the feminine side of a woman’s body. Yes, a woman’s body is naturally sensuous, but, that is not what I focus on. My 30

and that’s when I realised that this is all a part of the game. We are real people, we are not machines and things like this will always be around. After all this time, I realise, if I let something like this bother me, I won’t be able to succeed. That, my dear, was my learning moment. What do you know today that you wished you knew all those years ago? You have to stop and take a breath. You learn this with time, and this lesson comes with age as well; mishaps can happen at any moment. I wish I was this relaxed back then and simply let everything happen instead of stressing over it. Still, I have no regrets and my career has been the way I wanted it to be. And, going forward, I believe it will be the way it should be. What advice would you give someone who wants to follow in your footsteps? I see the young generation is taken in by the glamor of the industry and do not realise the hard work that comes with it. There is never a shortcut to hard work and what gets you ‘there’ is the blood and sweat you put in. You have to be self-aware and create your own language rather than be like someone else. Their success cannot be your success and the key ingredient is to be disciplined and simply follow your heart and the creative instincts you know you have. Success will always follow through but you cannot be blinded by the fame as it is a very small part of the industry. Every career comes with struggle, you don’t start flying from the first day. FOOTBALL FASHIONISTAS Fifty One East Hosts Special Preview of MANISH ARORA X PSG SS19 Capsule Collection

ifty One East recently hosted one of the most iconic collections in history; Manish Arora x Paris Saint-Garman SS19 capsule collection. The first Indian designer to design a kit for the Parisian team, Manish Arora is known for his quirky designs that boast of a colourful palette. This instance was no different and the event was star studded as the designer himself was present, as well as Paris Saint-German players Marco Verratti and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, providing a wonderful surprise for fans and onlookers who were delighted with the opportunity to meet and greet the designer and football players at Fifty One East, Lagoona Mall. The new collection showcases Arora’s creativity across a number of PSG branded statement pieces, incorporating the club’s name and logo but with a feminine touch. Faces of PSG stars Neymar Jr, Thiago Silva, Kylian Mbappe, Marco Verratti, and Edinson Cavani, are all featured on the front or back of different t-shirts. The entire capsule collection is infused with the 80s style aesthetics, from hoodies and joggers to thigh-skimming

KENZO’S SPRING/SUMMER 2019

This collection is a colourful and divinely energetic assemblage, a futurist and optimistic vision. Co-creative directors HUMBERTO LEON and CAROL LIM wanted to take this a step further for the campaign and depict a true utopia. They tapped a hero of theirs, iconic photographer, filmmaker, and artist DAVID LACHAPELLE, to shoot the images.

I

nfinitely and uniquely qualified for the job, LaChapelle has made a career out of not so much depicting his subjects but rebirthing them and placing them into a fantasia of his own making. His images are instantly recognisable and inimitable. He has also spent much of the past 11 years in tropical heaven-on-earth: Maui, Hawaii. Shot at his Los Angeles studio, LaChapelle conjured a surreal paradise for the KENZO Spring-Summer 2019 campaign, where streetscapes, urban apartments, and breathtaking outdoor scenes blurred into each other in a Technicolor euphoric reverie. Models are joined by fashion moonlighters such as dancers, musicians, students, and even a star-making cameo by Humberto’s mother, Wendy Leon. The campaign is the perfect harmony and coalescence of the passions and ideals of Carol and Humberto and David, as all have devoted their careers to not only following their bliss but spreading it.

With his widely recognisable staged pictures, the artist began to expand the genre of photography and by 1991, The New York Times predicts, “LaChapelle is certain to influence the work of a new generation...in the same way that Mr. Avedon pioneered so much of what is familiar today.” Over the past thirty years, LaChapelle’s body of work has established the artist as a fixture in contemporary art. His portrait, stage and music video and film works have become iconic archetypes of America in the 21st Century. In 2018, LaChapelle created visual campaigns for Travis Scott’s AstroWorld campaign as well as Elton John’s farewell tour. In the spring, the artist released the most extensive book project of his career to date. Lost & Found and Good News For Modern Man mark the final volumes of a five-book anthology, which began with LaChapelle Land (1996), and continued with Hotel LaChapelle (1999) and Heaven to Hell (2006). 2018-2019 introduces significant fine art exhibitions at National Portrait Gallery (London), Groninger Museum (The Netherlands), Pearl Lam Galleries (Singapore), Geuer X Geuer Art (Dusseldorf), Galerie Templon (Paris) and Stary Browar (Poland). French watchmaking expert, Objectif Horlogerie, returns for a third year to engage watch connoisseurs in a hugely popular master watch workshop, “Discover Watchmaking”. Each participant will also be awarded an accredited diploma. Objectif Horlogerie will also offer an exclusive paid experience for attendees to build their own unique custom watches with Objectif Horlogerie elements. Participants will leave with their unique timepieces. A gemmology workshop will cover a basic knowledge of diamonds and coloured gems. Another popular workshop which returns in 2019 is the hands on jewellery making workshop by master craftsmen. French expert Geoffroy Ader and the newly created Qatar Watch Club will present daily informal educational talks at the Majlis to small groups of established and/or aspiring watch collectors. In addition, iconic French auction house Artcurial will offer watch enthusiasts, visitors, and collectors with free consultations and valuations. An expert gemologist will also be at hand to offer free consultation for visitors purchasing gemstones from the show. There are so many struggling with this holiday, that many alternative ones have been created around the day to help those single, widower, separated or heartbroken to deflect from the social pressure and expectation of blissful romantic love on this day regardless. I get it, with media pushing us to dream of a Happily-EverAfter for ourselves above

anything else, “not qualifying” for it feels painfully life failure. Now, what would happen if instead of focusing all our attention and effort into attractingsomeone else to fill the void we feel inside or validate our worthiness, we would look at February, or Valentine’s Day even, as a chance to show up for ourselves with nothing but compassion, gratitude and love? How would that make us feel in the long run? Imagine if, even if it’s only for this one short month of the year, each of us would commit to shifting our focus to behaving as if we are romancing ourselves, as if we were the object of our deepest affection and love, as if we were the centre of the universe. Because the thing is that even the most madly in-love stories out there can’t be sustainable when one (or both) of the participants is constantly doubting their worth and value. Trust me, as a woman who has struggled with this in creating a beautiful marriage, I can tell you that it wasn’t until I dared to love myself fully, to become my own biggest valentine and lover, that I was able to show up in my relationship without demands or needs, without keeping tabs, without needing him to complete me, because I was already whole. So, my invitation to you today, whether you are in a relationship with another person or in one with yourself, is to dare to make this day, this month, this year, about falling in love with you. About embracing all that is you, with the quirk for fluffy socks, obsession with Zac Efron, of utter dislike for gummies; with your incapacity to avoid crying at certain commercials and your attachment to stationary. Upon entering, one is greeted by an aura of utter tranquillity, as if entering a restful urban oasis. This is a place you can come to seriously unwind. Our massage therapists met us and led us to our private couple’s suite beautifully adorned with rose petals. The suite is equipped with a private insuite shower for maximum comfort and privacy. The body treatment started with a brisk rub of body polish, the organic mix was rubbed down all over my body to gently remove all dead skin and improve the skin texture. After exfoliation, an indulgent warm shower awakens the senses, my skin felt incredible soft and glowing. Once the Aroma Massage began with a soothing and aromatic rose oil, I could feel my brain letting go of clouds of negative energy as my therapist pressed firmly on my third eye, changing my mood to a lost state of contentment. My shoulders were realigned with the gentle rub and tug of her hands. From head-to-toe, my masseuse concentrated on working my knots to make my body into an ideal vessel through which energy could flow. In each minute that passed I felt alleviated of an invisible burden and more aware of the energy that lay dormant inside me. With my newfound exuberance, I felt I could thrive. Veganism has recently been praised for its weightloss benefits, with the average vegan weighing 2-4kg less than a meat eater. This is predominantly due to the amount of calories contained in animal protein - plant-based protein tends to be much lower in calories than animal protein. A plant-based diet can also help to improve digestion with a high intake of vegetables, fruits, fibre and prebiotics helping to comfort the colon. Animal products derived from dairy such as milk, cheese, yoghurt, and chocolate, as well as eggs, can also cause intolerance reactions in sensitive people. Cutting these products out can help reduce symptoms from a food intolerance and decrease the chances of developing leaky gut syndrome. According to the American Dietetic Association, reducing your animal product intake can also help lower the risk of developing chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

COUNTERACTING ANY POTENTIAL NEGATIVES Switching to a vegan lifestyle can result in uncertainty for many people. Many people are unaware of the vitamins and minerals you may lose out on when switching to a vegan diet and require information on how to ensure they are maintaining as healthy and balanced a diet as possible. The most common negative impact of veganism is deficiencies in nutrients you would usually obtain from animal products. Some of these include: Vitamin B12 – a vitamin required for brain and nervous system healthOmega 3 – a fish oil which plays an important role in concentration, memory, eye and vision health, and


healthy joints, skin and hair Iron – without enough iron, your body can’t produce enough of a substance in red blood cells that enables them to carry oxygen. This can result in extreme fatigue, weakness, pale skin, headaches, shortness of breath, brittle nails and a poor appetiteZinc – zinc is a mineral that your body uses to fight off infections and produce cells. It is an important mineral for healing injuries. JW’s Steakhouse. Since I entered from the dessert section, I think I simply walked through the entire brunch with stars in my eyes. In addition, Asia Live was making food right in front of me, and I could simply pick and choose my entire selection right there - bliss. An entire assortment of salads, seafood, and Arabic dishes were calling out to me and just when I was about to start, the table of assorted bread and cheese hooked me in. What can I say, cheese makes me weak at the knees, and personally, I think that was a very decent way to start a Friday. Generally, the taste of every dish was carefully designed to show-off the best of what we already know the Doha Marriott is. The delicious brisket from the JW’s Steakhouse with the variety of sauces, the heavenly lamb biryani from the Indian selection, the exquisite variety of sushi, the tangy sauce of the Mexican fajitas selection and the heaven sent dessert spread; the Doha Marriott Hotel made sure that they were roping in their regulars with this brunch.

hen the Doha weather allows you to sit outdoors, you simply do it without any question. Therefore, when I was invited to Doha Marriott Hotel’s Pool & Brunch over the weekend, I was a tad bit more excited than a normal person. Not only is the Doha Marriott Hotel the host of a few award-winning restaurants such as Taj Rasoi, they almost never go wrong with their food. I went in with really high expectations and as soon as I entered, I knew I was in for a good time. I headed out to the poolside to take a break and simply enjoy some time with the family. The warm sun with the chilly wind was actually a treat since it reminds me of the ideal winter back home! You can easily divide your time between entertainment and food or, simply give yourself the much-needed breaks in between. Since the pool is also accessible with this brunch, I think it is the ideal place to be for families. The entire idea is to eat, and have some time lazing around as the kids tire themselves out so the mamas can go back to have the toothsome sliders and fried chicken they have been eyeing up for what feels like an eternity. Hey, sometimes, we just don’t want to share! The Doha Marriott Hotel brunch is definitely something that I would head back for. Not only was the food flavorsome, the attentive staff and their admirable service made this experience a one to remember. Honestly, I gave myself breaks in between just so I could spend more time there. I tried food from two sections in a go, then spent some time at the pool just to simply doze off in between. Food coma is an actual thing, guys! And, you’ve been warned because I know for a fact, you will not want to put your fork down or leave this ideal weather later on. I DON’T LIKE IT … I LOVE IT MISS OHLALA IS FEELING RATHER LOVING THIS MONTH AND DEPICTS THE TRUE MEANING OF THAT INFAMOUS WORD. When American romance novelist and screenwriter Nicholas Sparks wrote ‘The best love is the kind that awakens the soul; that makes us reach for more…’ he was speaking about the love shared by two people, however, this statement could apply to so many scenarios and situations which involve love in any one of its many manifestations. In a changing society, governed by social media where social conventions and morality are constantly shifting and evolving how do we perceive love and how does it impact upon the way we choose to live our lives? Some feel that without trust, love cannot flourish and be enjoyed to its full potential. The ability to open one’s heart without reservation is surely down to that sense of security. This applies to both friendship and other relationships where all bonds are built on trust and without it you have nothing. When trust is broken a sense of fear creeps in and to quote one of American Filmmaker George Lucas’ finest creations ‘Fear is the path to the dark side, fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate and hate leads to suffering’. So is trust the defining feature of love? Commitment, passion, affection, intimacy and honesty evidently ensues and I am certain you are adding to the list as you read this. 98

Unconditional love is surely a constant which exists whether trust is broken, feelings hurt or neglected and expectations left unfilled. To love a child or friend unconditionally without any expectation of recompense or any defined boundaries which can not be crossed must be an exception to the ‘rule of trust’? Therefore, the most pure form of love does not require trust? ‘A Love Supreme’ the title of a fanzine, but equally a statement of the power of emotion linked with devoting oneself to a sport or indeed a past-time. This requires commitment, selflessness, enjoyment and passion just as a friendship or relationship might. The tears of a sportsman as they stand aloft, adorned with a medal or sash, listening to their national anthem illustrates this strength of emotion. This love for their sport and the pride associated with it as they represent their team or country. So pick your favourite statement about love and stick with it …. ‘Love is all we need’, ‘Love is patient’, ‘Love is an act of faith’, ‘Love knows no boundaries’, ‘Love makes the world go round’, ‘Love Yourself First ’ or my personal favourite, ‘Love conquers all’
