Great expectations. Following the frivolity of the festive season (one too many indulgent nights?) we oft give ourselves a proverbial slap on the wrist, vowing to mend our ways and thus set unrealistically high expectations of reform. But counterproductively we tend to come down too hard on ourselves. So to ease you into the New Year we’ve come up with a spread of colourful fashion pages to brighten your month and give you a positive boost. Our rainbow selection aims to inspire a wardrobe change or simply put you in a better mood. We continue this kaleidoscopic theme via a cheery interview with Charlotte Olympia, THE shoe lady of the moment alongside an energetic, quirky and brilliant shoot from Liselore Frowijn - a go-getting designer we’ve come to know through our trips to Paris. Her fiercely dynamic designs are quite literally, paintings. Watch this space. And as I flip through the magazine I can’t help but adore our beauty section this month. Sofia Graniello loves to play around with colours and techniques, bringing the tricks of the trade to the pages of Ohlala with aplomb - enjoy decoding your hues! Sofia also had a sit down with the uber cool Anna Dello Russo, editor-at-large and creative consultant for Vogue Japan, as she came to Doha for the opening of the new Tory Burch boutique. And while we might not be shrouded in winter darkness in our region, January has become the universal month of taking off and diving into sparkling seas against sugarwhite beaches on an island, far, far away - with the fall in airfare can you blame anyone? Angela Beitz took one for the team and headed to the postcard-ready Maldives and unapologetically loved every minute of her stay at The Dusit Thani. The dreamy expanse of cerulean blues, candlelit glows and blazing sunsets is luxury realised. If that doesn’t prompt a Google search...

It’s a New Year and definitely a new me. Out with the old resolutions (which I never end up committing to) and in with 2016’s new goals and resolutions which are basically the same every year. Who ends up committing to New Year’s resolutions, anyway? Every December 31, I vow and promise myself for a better and happier Sofia – and the occasional ‘I want to get skinny’ resolution that with time, my jeans size reminds me what a procrastinator I am with my so called ‘New Year’s resolutions’. Also, I constantly promise myself to become a lot more patient and of course, buy less beauty products – those who know me, know, that is a constant lie I enjoy telling myself. And because I love beauty related chat, in our beauty section you’ll find great deals and tips on how to restore your skin back and get glowing skin with easy steps. For those of you who are back from your holidays – I so envy you– enjoy our first edition of 2016.

Designer Focus

A stiletto loyalist, front-runner of flats and all round purveyor of glamour, Charlotte Olympia has garnered a legion of women to her designs. She talks about her latest collection, dream collaborations and the balancing act of work/family life How did you become a designer, what has been your journey?

It was glamour that got me interested in fashion. As a child I used to watch old movies with my mother, introducing me to silver screen classics including my favourite, Gilda. I wanted to be a fashion designer from a young age, but only decided to specialise in footwear during my foundation course at London College of Fashion when one of my tutors commented on my emphasis on accessories when I designed outfits. I then went on to do a BA at Cordwainers learning the craft of footwear and started my own brand soon after I graduated.

What inspires your collections?

So many things inspire me including people, art, movies to fabrics, textures and colours. I love to give my collections a soul and a story. I love collecting beautiful things and I translate this by transforming everyday objects into something wearable. I am constantly collecting ideas whether it›s for a current collection or saving them to develop for future projects. For Cruise 16, Charlotte Olympia celebrates the glamorous grandma, enjoying her twilight years in style by the pool. Never without her dazzling jewels, her luxurious turban or her beloved lap dog, this collection explores the eccentricity, the glamour and the joie de vivre of the fashionable silver set. With soft jewel tones, fun prints and rich embellishments, the collection has many tongue and cheek elements, yet remains timelessly elegant. 46

What does an average day look like for you?

I try to be full time at work and a full time mother; this is only made possible because I chose to have my office very close to my house so I can almost be in two places at once! I have always wanted a family and a business so I try my best to make it work. Every day is different, but it always starts with breakfast with the boys, followed by the school run and then into work for meetings and design and finishes with bedtime reading for the boys and a dinner with my husband. My ideal day off would be spent with my family.

If you could collaborate with someone who would it be and why?

Next year I am collaborating with three great brands. It is very exciting for me to be able to add my creative stamp to brands and products I love. I’ve always loved Agent Provocateur and have been collecting their beautiful lingerie for years. Beautiful shoes and lingerie both have a positive impact on how you feel and can instantly elevate you in every sense of the word! Funnily enough when I first started to study fashion design I was very interested in corsetry. I am half Brazilian so I have been wearing Havaianas since I was little and it has always been a brand I wanted to work with; it was exciting to incorporate my own designs into a timeless classic. Finally I have always seen MAC as a leading global make up brand and was very happy that they wanted to collaborate when I approached them with my dream project. We both share similar sensibilities making a great partnership. Beauty plays a big role in my life; my style is defined by my hair and makeup, which is inspired by the glamorous stars from the silver screen.

What’s your favourite place to visit and why?

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (where my mother is from). Rio is my home away from

home. The first and last thing I do when I arrive is have a run up and down Ipanema beach followed by a fresh coconut and admire one of the most beautiful views in the world.

What are your favourite items from the collection?

*Wallace sandal – a glamorous red silk satin sandal with an elegant bow ankle strap – perfect for the party season! *Vreeland sandal – a sculptural platform sandal draped with metallic python and luxurious twisted fabrics.*Dolly On The Rocks pumps – jewel encrusted heel and platform glimmers on seasonal swimming pool blue Dolly.*A Girl’s Best Friend clutch bag – a larger than life emerald cut Perspex clutch bag in emerald green.*Newman handbag – off white leather handbag decorated with beautiful jewel embellishments. *Heirloom Case – a clear perspex vault box designed complete with a bejeweled velvet insert to keep your sparklers locked up but always on show!

On a separate design note, how have you decorated your home?

Are you more shabby chic or modern lines? I have a family so my house is very much a home rather than a showcase. I would say it was eclectic, a collection of things old and new, some past memories and new additions. Like my shoe designs, the foundations are classic, but I do like to accessorise. I love mid-century design which inspired my past Fall 15 collection, ‘A World of Interiors’.

What item can you not leave the house without?

Red lipstick; it instantly makes me feel glamorous regardless of what I am wearing. It’s a timeless classic that goes with anything and everything. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Woman of the Month

Meet the real zarmig Armenia’s culinary queen and fashion lover, Zarmig sets the record straight on what female independence is all about

B

orn into a typical strict Armenian household, men

were the focus. But rather than succumbing to the norm of being your average Armenian woman, cast into the shadows of men, Zarmig craved stardom. The now star recalls growing up in a household where her dad was tough on her and remembers him as a “strong” man. The chef talks about growing up in a society where women’s ideas and ambitions were thrown out the window, and yet, young Zarmig took her passion and devotion for culinary art further down the line, which gave her the opportunity to become a true celebrity. “I’ve been a chef for a long time. My dad loved food and my mum loved cooking, she was a housewife, a true master in the kitchen. In Armenia it’s a tradition to share food, so at the beginning I started off helping my mum, a way to entertain myself.” Little by little her hobby took to new heights pushing Zarmig to become a professional chef. “ I grew up with that feeling of becoming a chef and in school when teachers would ask, ‘what do you want to do when you grow up?’ I would say, ‘a chef.’ Of course, everyone laughed,” she admits. Growing up in Armenia and in Lebanon, 15 years ago becoming a chef was a bit of a question mark for women; for chef Zarmig it was just an obstacle that with time would be overcome. “Most of my studies were in Lebanon where I took culinary school and hospitality management.” Having her goals firm and steady, the chef took the first step in the field as an employee at the U.S Embassy in Beirut that provided the correct experience and preparation for what was to come. Knowing what she needed to amp her career, Zarmig jumped into the restaurant business with her all Armenian restaurant, Dzar in Beirut.

50

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Being the insatiable woman that she is, she risked it all and moved to Qatar for the birth of her culinary baby: Mamig. The restaurant that is currently located at Katara, offers exquisite Armenian dishes with an exceptional taste that only chef Zarmig is able to provide. Her career as a TV host and her participation in food advertisements, mostly in Saudi Arabia, has given her career incredible exposure. But not only has this driven and independent woman taken charge of her life by becoming a master in the culinary field, she inspires many through her paintings (of food) and books – she’s in the middle of creating her 24th culinary book. “I started writing books to educate people, so people would have an idea and be able to get something out of it.” Her recent book is all about her native country and a take on achieving a healthier lifestyle. But what challenges the star? Her reply is simple: she is her biggest critic. Zarmig is honest about how she pushes herself daily to achieve more and remain humble and positive. “I am a woman with education in my hands, but at the same time I take the time to take care of myself, to look presentable, and to feel feminine. I’ve received the crown of the Armenian Cuisine, something I am very proud of.” With so many achievements and accolades, the star hopes to incentivise women to achieve their own personal goals. “I want to empower women. You can be anything you want and still have your career. You can be a chef and have your career, and yet, you can be a housewife and still have your career. The sky is the limit.” The future holds exciting projects for chef Zarming in the coming months - having her painting exhibition in Katara is also on the horizon for the talented artist. But that is not all; the star will also be part of the Guinness World Records, for attempting to make the biggest dish in Qatar’s culinary history.

“I want to empower women. You can be anything you want and still have your career. You can be a chef and have your career, and yet, you can be a housewife and still have your career. The sky is the limit”

Marc Jacobs Debuts Decadence

Master perfumer, Annie Buzantian, tells us how sequins and fur inspired the brand’s latest fragrance

W

hat does the brand represent to you? Marc Jacobs is the epitome of chic with an effortlessly confident vibe. He is able to achieve a luxury that still has substance. His work and his brand are infused with an authenticity and rebelliousness that ultimately creates luxury with an edge. What were the sources of inspiration to create this fragrance? My mind went to images of dresses designed by Marc. I thought of sequins and furs and extravagance and celebrating the youthful flirtatiousness for which he stands. I sought to create a fragrance to capture that sentiment. Were there any specific ingredients to have in this fragrance? There were no specific ingredients. They wished to have a fragrance that exuded extravagant elegance, but in the Marc way. How would you describe this fragrance in your own words? The fragrance is an all-out, lavish celebration of luxury. It has the sophistication of the classics, but with a totally new twist. Completely addictive and consuming, you can’t get enough of it. If you had to choose three key words to describe it what would they be? Sultry. Luxurious. Indulgent.

Could you describe each note in detail? Top: The sultry top note opens with the succulence of Italian Plum and the glamour of Iris Flower, edged with the saucy temptation of Saffron. Heart: Luxurious intoxication blooms from the floral heart of Bulgarian Rose, Jasmine Sambac and Orris, creating a plush extravagance. Base: An indulgent glow builds in the dry down, wrapping the fragrance in foxy sensuality. Sumptuous depth is achieved with Vetiver, Liquid Amber, and Papyrus Woods for a lavishness that lingers on. What key words would you use to describe the consumer for this fragrance? Culturally sophisticated, young at heart, ageless.

Beauty Column “I fought these cravings off by sipping ginger tea but by the end of the third day I swore the packet of Gummi Bears in the pantry was calling my name”

W

e all know the feeling. Guilt from indulging during the festive season has kicked in. You feel sluggish. Tired. That gorgeous Victoria Beckham dress you got given for Christmas won’t zip up. You regret every mince pie you ate and you haven’t exercised in three weeks. I hear you. As someone who lives for food and has never met a carbohydrate she didn’t like, I too overindulged during party season. Give me a deep fried carb with some melted cheese and I’m yours. Chocolate is basically my coping mechanism for a bad day and I love a tasting menu. As cliché as it is, January is the perfect time to do a detox. You are in the right frame of mind to actually attempt something as crazy as this and convince yourself that kale juice for lunch is an excellent idea. I’ve done a hardcore juice detox before which included six daily juices and it wasn’t pretty. I started it on a Sunday night. I was confident. I felt smug. This was going to be easy. I slurped my cashew milk and went to bed thinking how in five days time I would fit back into my beloved Sass & Bide jeans I bought when I was 19. Fast forward to the following evening to me curled up on my couch in foetal position. One day without coffee or real food and I was struggling. Call me naive but I really didn’t think it would be that hard. Coming off caffeine was probably the hardest thing. The juices actually tasted great and were relatively filling but as a coffee addict I found it very hard to even go one day without my beloved cappuccinos and I really missed the actual process of chewing. Over the next couple of days, I persevered but oddly I starting craving KFC chicken and licorice all sorts (I haven’t eaten either of these in years). It’s funny how you never want to eat certain types of food until the opportunity to eat them gets taken away from you. I fought these cravings off by sipping ginger tea but by the end of the third day I swore the packet of Gummi Bears in the pantry was calling my name. My colleague’s heads also started to resemble burgers and I was daydreaming about bread and ice-cream. The word detox makes us think of So after all this torture, was it really worth it? It really was. My skin glowed, I had so much energy and for the first time since I was hunger, mood swings and limitations. 10 years old, I had a flat stomach. It amazed me how my body repaired itself while I gave it a decent break. I was also surprised that I didn’t Angela Beitz explains the benefits of cave and as much as I thought I would celebrate with a giant pizza giving your body a break my body felt so good that I didn’t want to bad things to it (that lasted about four days). My advice is to start off easy with a one or two-day detox just to ease you in. If you have zero self-control you may have to book into a health retreat where you’ll be monitored and not tempted by fresh baguettes and chocolate that you hide around the house. So what’s my New Year’s resolution? It’s best put in the words of the gorgeous Gigi Hadid. ”Eat Clean. Stay Fit. And have a burger to stay sane.”

Maxim

French pretender, or the real deal?

Sparkle your evening with a romantic atmosphere

Crab Imperial Maxim at Radisson Blu

What’s It All About?

We can all agree that Doha has its fair share of renowned gourmet French restaurants in town. We can also agree, that all these restaurants might just be for deep pockets only – causing a bit of hesitation at the outset. In saying that, Maxim, Radisson Blu’s very own gourmet French restaurant, offers top of the line, afforable cuisine with a superb atmosphere. With sophisticated red couches, matching its vivid red carpet, stunning chandelier and vintage Parisian feel, the restaurant is a hidden gem within the premises of the prominent hotel. But of course, we couldn’t miss the fine details that make up the experience: the candles in each table setting and the live piano really hit the spot.

Choices were endless. From mocktails to bubbly drinks, you can enjoy an array of beverages from start to finish. As for their cuisine, there’s a fusion of local and French ingredients to ignite your palate. However, if we had to break it down, the dish that really stirred some talk was the Potato Gnocchi (QR90) as a warm starter. It’s the perfect glide into the evening – great for sharing, and there’s an abundance of red sauce to go round. If you’re after a lighter appetiser, the Crab Imperial, a succulent cream with lemon zest (QR76), has a real cool freshness to it. For main courses, you can go about it with heaps of variety. Giant Ravioli is a must (QR100) with truffle and pumpkin filling – also perfect for two. And for meat lovers, give the juicy US Beef Tenderloin Roll (QR215) a go. A combination of mushroom sauce, vegetables to the side and fondant potato – Ohlala’s favourite – is a dish we are still salivating over till today! Furthermore, a night does not end properly 78

Health Files The Ritz-Calrton’s spa room

We are still recovering from the fabulous day we had with Irina, The Ritz-Carlton’s specialist whom we trusted with our troubled areas, stress, backache and other knots – which she happily fixed for us. For those who have never been to The Ritz-Carlton and enjoyed their amazing facilities, you’re missing out on something quite big. But no fear, we are here to tell it all.

What’s It All About

The spa takes pride in their fusion of traditional Arabic principles, Asian traditions and the best European techniques and technology, offering the best for a journey of relaxation. Linger, Longer

After finishing a well-deserved treatment (which we wished was longer!) we explored the hotel grounds – their facilities are fabulous for recharging your batteries and getting into shape. The prominent hotel has a fitness center offering cardiovascular and strength training, which includes a number of interesting classes – Zumba is definitely on our list! There’s also a sauna and steam room to sweat out all your toxins and feel heaps lighter. But that’s not all! There are fitness classes to get your energy levels up: body pump, Pilates, tennis lessons and personal training.

The Mercedes GLC 4MATIC

The GLC replaces the GLK as the mid-size crossover offering from Mercedes, and in our opinion, it’s quite the improvement and a thrill to drive

W

e didn’t have anything against the GLK at all – it’s a luxurious and practical mid-size family crossover. That is, we didn’t until we saw its replacement, the GLC. By comparison, the GLC makes the GLK look boxy and plain. It’s sleeker, curvier, and slightly bigger than its predecessor, and boasts subtle improvements all over. Like the GLK, the GLC sits above the compact GLA and below the GLE Coupe in the SUV range. For this model, Mercedes have done away with the trio of V6 petrol engines from the GLK, and instead opted to go for one universal 2.0l turbo inline-four cylinder engine. At 241hp, it’s slightly less powerful than the biggest option on the GLK, the 3.5l V6, which put out 268hp. However, thanks to the turbo, it boasts more torque, at 370Nm, compared to the V6’s 350Nm, and it’s also more efficient. That big torque from the turbo makes the GLC very quick off the mark, and when combined with the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system, you have an SUV that is fast, agile, and a lot of fun to drive, not to mention very safe. The seating position and big windows make for superb driving visibility, and there’s an extremely light and airy feel thanks to the panoramic sunroof. All of this combines to make the interior feel even more light and spacious than it already is. 82

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Diva Drives

“The big windows make for superb driving visibility, and there’s an extremely light and airy feel”

As you’d expect, the interior is luxurious and stylish, with comfortable leather seats, and that futuristic, and yet somehow organic vibe that typifies Mercedes interiors these days. It’s achieved through a combination of flowing, curved lines and wood panelling, and an absence of harsh angles, all creating a tranquil and relaxing setting. The large dash-mounted touchpad gives you easy control over the car’s functions, and can also be controlled via the dial/touchpad combo on the centre console between the driver and front passenger. The dial can be a little tricky to get the hang of initially, but once you’re used to it, you’ll find it intuitive and well-placed for easy reach. In terms of practicality, cargo space isn’t the biggest we’ve ever seen. While it’s fine for shopping or sports gear, anything larger will be a squeeze. While the back seats do fold flat, unless you do so a full set of luggage for a family of four is out of the question, which makes it less than suitable for long road trips. As for the safety and driver assistance, this is a Mercedes at the end of the day, and what that means is cutting-edge, pioneering safety technology. The car features 360 degree sensors all around the vehicle to assist with parking, overtaking and collision avoidance. For example, if the car senses that you’re approaching the car in front to quickly, if it has braked suddenly and you haven’t noticed, for example, it will warn you and start braking for you, to reduce the chance of impact. There is also lane departure assist, adaptive cruise control, blind spot warning, to name but a few. Overall, the GLC is an attractive, luxurious and enjoyable mid-size SUV and, most importantly for a family car, it’s extremely safe, making it well worth the premium price tag, in our opinion. www.ohlala-magazine.com

B

ari, Italy, native Anna Dello Russo knows a thing or two about today’s fashion. Selfproclaimed passionate fashionista, the icon is now the editor-at-large and creative consultant for Vogue Japan. For 18 years, Anna was at the helm of Vogue Italia as fashion editor and for six years she served as editor for L’Uomo Vogue. Now, she is still in full-throttle mode, inspiring the world about what she knows best: fashion. Best known for her extravagant and exotic looks, described as a “fashion maniac” by one of the top photographers in the industry, Helmut Newton, Anna visited Qatar for Tory Burch’s store opening and for an exclusive and intimate gathering with women in the region. Tory and Anna’s friendship goes way back to when Anna would attend New York Fashion Week, sitting religiously on the FROW at all of her shows. “I met Tory in Milan, she came for the opening of the store and then again I used to come to NYC for her shows.” Not only did their friendship blossom via fashion shows and soirees, but also through special collaborations: “We spoke about doing something special and that’s how Doha came to life,” says the trend-setter. Wearing a pink kaftan dress from Tory’s latest collection inspired by a wholly Middle Eastern vibe with a beautiful and exotic statement necklace talks about Tory Burch as a brand and what it represents for her as an individual. “She and the brand represent a lifestyle, an American lifestyle. The message it gives is not only about a fashion lifestyle, but also as an attitude, a healthier choice. The great thing about her is that she is a designer, but also a mother and a wife, so it’s important to see a woman like her doing all these things and not losing any part of her femininity.” When asking Anna about her favourite piece of the collection, kaftans take the prize. “I love the blue kaftan, it’s a long one, but there are also short versions of it. Tory has made a travel expedition in style with embroidery, kaftans, very close to the region’s culture.” The brand started off purely as an accessories label, which later became complete and went global with fuller collections. “The brand became international with all the additions, it’s a great evolution of the American dream,” adds the icon. However, how will Qatari consumers embrace the brand? Anna, who ensures the brand is perfect for the region adds her love for the Middle East: “The region is amazing. People love fashion, every proposal given is accepted – I love going to events where I get to meet interesting people who love fashion and create a festive atmosphere - not just a commercial party.” And when it comes to Middle Eastern fashion taste, Anna adds: “ I like the obsession of jewels and accessories here, bling bling, glamour stuff and makeup for example – it’s very interesting how they consume fashion in a limited area, but very strongly.” Anna doesn’t hold back about her thoughts on today’s power factor that keeps many businesses afloat: social media. “I love it, it’s new power media, another way to communicate, a big revolution – it’s all related to the young generation.” With a new era on the horizon, social media taking charge and younger minds ruling the world, Anna has been in the game for years, changing and molding today’s fashion industry. Yet, what does it truly take to stay relevant in an industry that changes by the minute? “Communication. Being able to talk to the new generation is key to survival. I must pay attention to the new audience,” she asserts. “It’s a big revolution moment, it’s all about the youth. You can say I am part of the old moment because now everything is going to change with the new revolution of the web.” New or old, Anna Dello Russo has set high standards in a fickle fashion world. Love her or hate her, Anna is here to stay.

typical CEO

Sana Salman, a young passionate woman who found herself submerged into a male-dominated world, was intent on playing by her own rules. Sana took full power and control of her life, career and dreams to become her own boss. She tells us what female power is really all about

Living in Qatar for the past six years, young and driven entrepreneur with a bachelor degree in Business Administration, Sana, ventured into the corporate and fashion world by launching her own company: Apex Events & Designers Fashion Lounge back in 2010. Although she didn’t just stop at this single venture, her vision grew. She saw the demand and potential opportunity for Asian designers in Doha, so she created her own clothing brand. The perfect mix of urban, Eastern chic couture with a bit of Western glamour, the feel is very much the embodiment of modern women. Her tireless pursuit for more has seen her launch the multi-brand at one of Doha’s biggest fashion events, the International Fashion Festival. But of course, it hasn’t always been rosy success from the get-go. What is it about your job and interacting with people that excites you the most? I love challenges in my life, I am facing challenges every day for my events, starting from planning, and management to execution. You need creativity and project management skills to shape your imagination to deliver the best. The satisfaction that you feel after fulfilling those challenges is the key that intrigues me. my companies, and I enjoy building the hype of any particular event, especially when it becomes ‘the talk of town’. I enjoy meeting with different people from all aspects of business and increase my exposure and knowledge. For me, entrepreneurship is the only alternative of fulfilling my long cherished dreams or desires. As a female, what is a challenge you encounter on a daily basis? There are other factors, which are important to tell and affect women’s ability such as religion, education, past work experiences, family backgrounds and other social and cultural values. Some women will see social and cultural norms as a big issue and may not consider the opportunity worthwhile after going through the challenges that it may entail. Among those who may start their own business following factors are good indicators of eventual success. As an entrepreneur it definitely requires management, money and market to prosper. However, women entrepreneurship is rapidly growing and such businesses make significant contributions to innovation, employment and wealth creation globally. What has been your biggest professional challenge you’ve had to tackle, so far? In Qatar’s market, one of the biggest challenges is to fulfill the government’s requirements. As Qatar is still an establishing market, having your business to succeed, good connections are required and an exceptional PR strategy. How important is it for you to be independent and self-sufficient in the world of today? The new era brings women to the stand that want it all: home, family and a successful career. Multi-tasking with household chores and professional deadlines has become the norm for the new woman. Women not only want to take over the world, but want to look good doing it. obstacles coming her way. The event management business needs a lot of patient and willpower to overcome the challenges. What would you tell your 20-year old self? I have always been a positive and fun loving person. I always say, do what makes you happy and you will not feel the hardships of your work. I would like to tell 20-year old me that it’s just the beginning and sky is the limit. I have my goals and deadlines set for my career and personal life and Mashallah so far I am seeing myself achieving all of them.

What makes your macaroons unique and better than that of your competitors? I think the taste is our standout quality! It is a potent mix between a powerful flavour and creativity. We always release new flavours or present some new combination of flavours. Nonetheless we also develop unique flavours such as infiniment vanille, rose and caramel— I like to work with one flavour and go in very deep and keep pushing it to its limit. You are indeed famous for your very innovative, sometimes unlikely,

flavour combinations —like the macaroon with Foie Gras or Green Peas —are these some deep-held fantasies or it is part of a serious culinary experiment? The green peas in macaroons are not something random. On the contrary, the mix between green peas and menthe is a traditionally recognised combination. The green pea is the sweetest vegetable of its kind—sometimes they’re cut out of diets for being too sweet! So it is an obvious combination for me and if this kind of unusual association can bring fun and pleasure at the same time we accomplished our mission. How many stores does PH have worldwide? We are currently operating in 11 countries; there are around 47 boutiques around the world, and 600 employees. How you manage to maintain quality control throughout the different Hermé stores throughout the world? When you are going to LV or Hermes are you asking them how they manage to maintain a certain quality consistency? Here it is the same story because it is also a know-how. To be a pastry chef you need to be highly organised and consistent in order to transmit your techniques or your know-how—it is the essence of our development—we should be able to transmit and preserve our heritage. How can you guarantee that the same product being sold in Paris and in Doha will have the same taste? The trick is the fact that the product we are selling in Doha is also the product we are manufacturing in France—they are both the same product (laughs). Every single product is made in France! www.ohlala-magazine.com

Taking a trip to the Maldives is akin to

a perfect summer romance. Everything is fresh and new and you experience a feeling of happiness that you don’t get from a typical holiday. This is not my first time in the Maldives and it’s amazing how coming back a few years later conjures up lots of lovely memories and familiar feelings. The breeze, the calm turquoise waters, the food, service and sheer beauty of this amazing place. Would it continue to impress me once again? The Dusit Thani is located on Mudhdhoo Island Baa Atoll. The Maldives’ first UNESCO Biosphere reserve is 35 minutes from Male by seaplane and 10 minutes by speedboat from Dharavandhoo domestic airport. I arrive at the pier of the hotel and am greeted by the hotel staff who are super lovely and professional, yet laid-back. Even our check in was relaxed. We were given a cold lemongrass scented towel and a welcome drink then driven to our room in a buggy. The idyllic island is lush and green and Dusit Thani have done a stellar job of seamlessly developing luxury villas without spoiling or taking away from the natural beauty of this pristine location. The property is perfectly maintained and there is an abundance of wildlife to enjoy. Birds chirp overhead and small lizards and crabs dart across the sand. This is all such a lovely change from my high rise apartment in the middle of the desert and I dwell on this numerous times during the trip. I kick off the first evening with dinner by the pool at Sea Grill. This restaurant serves up an array of fresh seafood and succulent steak and is an upscale yet relaxed venue. I opted for a traditional Maldivian curry with fresh tuna – it wasn’t on the menu but the chef was more than happy to make it for me. Huge chunks of super fresh tuna swimming in a flavoursome Maldivian curry sauce on a huge plate served with rice, roti, poppadoms, house made mango chutney and a refreshing raita. It was exceptional. The perfect food for eating by the water in the Maldives. I sipped on a chilled glass of crisp white wine and took in the scenery before heading back to my room eager to get to sleep to await the next day’s activities. I wake to the sound of the ocean and for a split second I forget where I am. I’m staying in one of the resort’s Beach Villas and it’s absolutely stunning. The room is spacious and filled with every mod-con you can think of, including a flat screen TV, Nespresso machine, TWG tea and products by Molton Brown. The back door leads out to a huge outdoor rain shower and a large tub set in a lush floral garden while the front door leads straight out to a hammock, two sun loungers and the beach. It’s pretty much win-win, any way you look at it. If you want to take your relaxed vibe to another level, then Devarana Spa is well worth a visit. After a delightful www.ohlala-magazine.com

Travel Escapes breakfast, I hop on my bike (provided free from the resort - such a nice touch) and casually pedal to the spa which is located in the middle of the island in a section of serene and indigenous rainforest. The spa is cleverly built in the tree tops and is unbelievably peaceful. I’m welcomed with a delicious plum juice and fill out any areas of concern for the 90-minute signature massage I’m about to embark upon. I choose the rose essential oil which is great for hydrating dry skin but there are others you can choose from depending on your mood. I’m taken up one of the large timber staircases by my sweet therapist to the treatment room. The room is large with huge windows that look out onto the rainforest. Once I’ve changed into a robe, I lay face down on the table and place my head in the hole of the bed to find a dish of sliced lemon and lime in warm water near my face. This is a welcome touch and it feel lovely to breathe in the plucky citrus scent. The deep tissue massage using Thai techniques is nothing short of amazing. Firstly, hot towels are laid on my back to relax my muscles before being soothed. My back is sore, aching and crunchy and my therapist focuses on all these sore spots and being the professional that she is, she can feel the specific knots and tense muscles. She works hard to rid me of my aches and pains and I quickly doze off to sleep. The treatment is finished with an excellent head massage and I leave the spa walking on air. If you are not one for sitting still on a holiday, then snorkeling will be your thing. The absolute stand-out feature of the property is the house reef. The island is surrounded by this breathtaking 360 degree coral reef which is brimming with tropical fish, turtles and in the right season, manta-rays. I visit the Splash Watersports Centre and am fitted with a mask, snorkel and fins. I dip into the water off of the jetty and am gob smacked by the plethora of tropical fish and coral. Angel fish and Butterfly fish swim around me in large groups and huge tuna glide by in the deeper waters. I come eye to eye with bright Parrot fish and just when I think this can’t get any better I spot a beautiful hawksbill turtle. After a relaxing afternoon dipping in and out of the sparkling infinity pool (one of the biggest in the Maldives) I order a refreshing tropical drink and sit on the deck at Sand Bar to watch the sunset. The Maldives easily puts on some of the best sunsets I’ve seen. The bright blue sky changes from burnt orange to bright indigo and then fluro pink for the finale as the sun dips down over the horizon. Dusit Thani Maldives is the perfect getaway from the Gulf. In a less than five-hour flight you can be enjoying the pristine surrounds of the island with their super friendly and knowledgeable staff. It’s the ideal escape whether you just want to relax by the pool and indulge in the spa and the wonderful fresh food options, or equally if you are the more adventurous type who wants to make the most of the fabulous scuba diving and other exhilarating watersports that are on offer. The only problem with the Maldives? Eventually you have to leave and return to reality. 92

Miss Ohlala

Hello 2016! If, like me, you’ve decided

only exception to this is items that should go into your fancy dress box, or heirloom items that your children might wear one day. To this day, I remain disappointed that my mother did not keep all her 60’s Biba dresses. • Items that are damaged or beyond repair – if they can’t be fixed, get rid of them! • Items which were an expensive mistake, and which still have the tag attached – we all have at least one such item lurking in our wardrobe. Consider whether you have a friend who you can give the item to, and if not, there are plenty of online sites where you can sell such items.

that a detox diet is just too much like hard work, I suggest you turn to your wardrobe instead. The key advantages of a wardrobe detox? 1.

2.

3.

It reduces those panic-attack moments when you open the wardrobe and have no idea what to wear. At which point, I generally turn to Mr Ohlala and ask his advice on what suits me, and he looks blank then responds “everything, darling!”, which is just not helpful. Once you have ascertained what is missing from your wardrobe, it gives you the best excuse to go shopping. Never underestimate the power of retail therapy to make you look and feel good. I have to admit Mr Ohlala is very supportive of my shopping sprees, as long as I don’t drag him with me. Last, but by no means least, it gives you the opportunity to donate some clothes to charity.

I appreciate that cleaning out your wardrobe can be a very daunting task. I only got around to it when I realised that I still had clothes from my university days in my wardrobe and my poor closet was taking on a life of its own. So here are my top tips to hopefully make the job easier:

If you need moral support, dial a friend and ask them to come over to help.

Step 3

the dress detox

Don’t put anything back into the wardrobe until you have cleaned it and considered whether you need any useful storage solutions such as a shoe rack, shelf dividers, baskets or hooks. And don’t forget moth balls! For longevity, I suggest keeping your precious handbags in dust bags and shoes in boxes. Hand wash all your winter jumpers and put them into moth-proof storage bags under your bed.

Step 4

Now for the fun part... Work out whether there are any gaps in your everyday wardrobe. Are you missing the perfect pair of jeans, or a jacket that goes with Take everything out of the wardrobe. If everything? Or the perfect camisole to you don’t, I assure you that you won’t do go under tops that are a little sheer?
