elcome to our Ramadan issue, which sees us getting our glad rags on and piecing together sparkly ensembles for a host of Iftars across the hotel circuit. When we arrive at this point in the year, we’re both excited and calm. It’s always so fun and foodfilled with an emphasis on togetherness. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t take to the tranquility that Ramadan brings to the work place. After back-to-back events in the Gulf and beyond, packed issues and relentless running around, I, and all of us at Ohlala, need a bit of pause. But, as ever in this business, the show must go on! When it comes to Ramadan style, the phrase: “belle of the ball” rings so true. It’s all about going bigger and better than the last outfit with suitably ostentatious accessories to match – we have you covered in this department quite thoroughly – hello statement necklace.
26

Letter But for me, it’s all about minimalist chic, where you don’t have to be so loud but still create noise with your outfit. And on the topic of understated glamour, I have become such a cheerleader for abayas recently. I’ve always been partial to modest dressing so when I first came across Bouguessa a year ago, I loved how sleek and elegant the abayas were and how versatile they can be. You could mistake a Bouguessa abaya for a jumpsuit or a magnificent cape. We speak with Faiza Bouguessa about how she is revolutionising the abaya, one collection at a time. The abaya has come such a long way to form a new identity (without compromising its roots) and take on new meaning for women who want to be at the forefront of fashion but still honour their culture in the most sophisticated way. Wishing you all a wonderful Ramadan.

As we enter the holy month of Ramadan, the statement jewellery scene is awash with perfect pieces. Maria De Toni’s Al Nahda East & West Jewellery Renaissance is the epitome of exclusivity: there are only 5 limited edition pieces. Each parure is worth 200,000 Euros comprising a necklace, cuff, earrings and a ring in 18ct gold with diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires. The calligraphic writing “Al Nahda” on the necklace charm with a central symbol of Allah is the testimony of the bridge between East and West. 34

C u tt i n g E d g e TraditioN The abaya as we know it has evolved. Gone are the days of homogenous wear; traditional dress is in fashion – with a twist. Editor in Chief Georgie Bradley speaks with Faiza Bouguessa, behind the eponymous, Bouguessa, who has revolutionised the abaya to be both urban and luxe

“Bouguessa has democratised long-held tradition and opened it to all”
I
“
“I felt that nobody really gave women who dress modestly any thought”
t’s an abaya?!” I recall squealing in disbelief. Not because what I was looking at was outrageously ostentatious or radical, I hasten to add. But because this particular abaya worn by a model sauntering about in a catalogue-perfect Parisian apartment, was something I’d wear in a heartbeat. The cut was sleek, tailored and form-fitting, without being too shapely around the contours of the body. It was a royal blue velvet abaya, draping so elegantly but with a slight urban slouch giving a modern note. Another model was clad in a sharp boxy suit of a deep burgundy hue (with a partially velvet collar) that hung confidently, showing both modesty and style. This is what Faiza Bouguessa does. She creates abayas that every woman would wear, regardless of their background. She has democratised long-held tradition, and opened it to all. Bouguessa pieces are not defined to one single aesthetic – Faiza likes to play with structure, geometry and flow: “I like to give my 52
www.ohlala-magazine.com
customers options. There’s the choice of wearing belts around the abayas if you want. My clients come to me for an abaya that’s a fashion statement. In my collection there are all types of abayas that can take you from day to night. There are some styles that are easy every day pieces and then there are some that are very eye-catching,” says Faiza. When it comes to the target market, she’s naturally placed an emphasis on the Gulf but for the SS16 collection, she had taken her collection to Europe and therefore felt the need to sidestep a bit. “I went away from my usual aesthetic. I was presenting in Paris and Milan and I felt that I had to make an effort to make it more adaptable to the European market. But for the AW16 [what is shown here] I realised it was better to focus on my market because that’s why I started the brand in the first place – I felt that nobody really gave women who dress modestly any thought.” Faiza has a rich tapestry of culture behind her. Born in Algeria but growing up in France and then living in Dubai has meant Faiza has had a diverse mix of influences for her work; but it’s not as prescriptive as you would think. “My inspiration is very random, just like any other designer. I am inspired by paintings, a piece of furniture, or a trend of the moment within international fashion,” adds Faiza. One trend that is present in the AW16 collection is the nod to pyjama wear that’s taken over the last couple of seasons – the piping details on the shirts and the cream velvet robe-like piece illustrate the hotly adopted trend the most.

“The unexpected colour in the lining or the geometry in the cut has brought the best out of the abaya and given it a new identity” In that vein, Faiza designs her abayas in such a way so as to give her clients freedom to build on the canvas of each piece – the unexpected colour in the lining or the geometry in the cut has brought the best out of the abaya and given it a new identity. But how far away from the abaya’s original roots and context will Faiza go with Bouguessa? “I would say the abaya has become more sophisticated over time. I think it’s a good thing because women feel the need to express their personality via style here, at the same time, they still have their strong religious beliefs and they want to respect that too,” notes Faiza. From our perspective, Bouguessa is a breath of fresh air and ticks all the right boxes. www.ohlala-magazine.com

full access June is here and so is the heat. Beauty editor, Sofia Graniello gives you the 101 on how to beat the sticky weather with style
Q: My face is going through a rough patch, literally. What is the best moisturiser out there?
A: The heat can be brutal, but behold Chanel’s latest face moisturiser. Apply day and night for better results – it does wonders!
Q: The weather is starting to ruin every hair style possible. How can I tame the curls?
Q: My eyebrows are all over the place and I’m beyond lazy about getting them threaded. Any tricks on how to keep them in place?
A: Absolutely! Vaseline will be your new best friend to tame the girls. Add a very small quantity to your eyebrows and make sure to comb them. This will only put them into place without any hazardous chemicals.
Q: Heavy perfumes are a bit overrated. I want to mix my perfume department with fresh scents. Help!
A: A mix of flavours never does any wrong. Dab into Laura Mercier’s Tea Menthe Citron collection. Fresh, wild with a twist of je ne sais quoi.
86
www.ohlala-magazine.com
A: Set them free! But if you’re a control freak, braids are royalty at the minute. Mix your style with different styles. Also, add a flower for a funky look.
Q: The heat can be unbearable. How can I achieve healthier and hydrated skin?
A: With Ramadan upon us, eating healthy is key. Stick to plain yoghurt for a light stomach. Add pomegranate, or strawberries to add natural sugar. Perfect to get rid of unwanted spots.

Truly Italian Italian cuisine is quite popular in the city, but authentic dishes are only served at one place: La Veranda. We discover the true delicacy of Italian gastronomy in this hidden gem

Culinary Insight
A
s the city grows by the minute, culinary options are doing the same. When it comes to gastronomic heavyweights, locals and expats are simply spoilt for choice. From Greek to Latin American flavours being firm favourites, Italian restaurants are also making their mark on the scene with their undeniable presence. La Veranda restaurant being one of them holds one of the most enchanting settings in the heart of the city for a spectacular eating destination. Located at the Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel, we couldn’t miss on the opportunity to try what this venue has to offer. Promising to deliver an authentic Italian experience, we quickly succumbed into the world of pastas, pizzas, tiramisus and other superb elements that join forces for a spectacular experience. With a casual atmosphere that calls for a relaxing yet delicious eating spot, the venue holds seating arrangements inside and a spectacular terrace with a backdrop of the Arabian Gulf. Of course, we opted for the tickle of the outside breeze and to take in the breathtaking view of the city’s multi-coloured skyscrapers. With a breadth of appetisers to choose from, we opted for something light, but perfectly adequate enough to give our taste buds a kick-start. Served with the right amount of ingredients, melanzane alla parmigiana was our first option, an eggplant dish with basil, tomato sauce, parmesan and mozzarella. For our main course, we went for a heavier dish plucked from the pasta selection. The
Ravioli di burrata was just as tasty as our starter, perfect for one, served with lobster ragu. After what seemed to be a never-ending evening of delicious dishes, the venue seemed to get busy with the perfect amount of expats and locals. The weather being the perfect pitch, many gathered outside to also appreciate what the magical place has to offer. And as our evening progressed, our culinary journey reached a fitting climax: pizza. Our choice of pizza involved fresh bresaola and rucola, supreme for those who wish to share and just delight in rich flavours. And yet, when we thought we had already had a proper Italian experience, dessert made us think twice. We were served with a mouth-watering tiramisu tradizionale that sealed our evening with a golden touch. La Veranda is open from 12pm until 3pm and for dining from 7pm until 11.30pm. Its Weekend Brunch is also available from 12.30pm until 4pm. For more information or reservations call: 4485 3000

A Touch of Attitude With Ramadan upon us what better excuse to start the Holy Month on a relaxing note Known to be a lifestyle destination, B/Attitude is a pioneer in the country for its advanced treatments, luxurious beauty therapies and its stellar wellness facilities. And because summer is upon us, we couldn’t skip on the chance to test and try their most popular treatments: the Stress Away massage and the prominent Biologique Rechercher facial treatment. Really wanting to look our very best for the new season, we made our way to this outstanding venue located at Beverly Hills Tower, West Bay. Combining modern and contemporary décor, the venue resonates serenity and tranquility, blocking all unnecessary chaos and stress for a journey of goodness. Our spa day kicked off in a luxurious and spacious room offering a mini Jacuzzi, personal changing room, and a beautiful spa bed. Excited, we began our B/Attitude experience with a 90 minute Stress Away massage, which consisted of a full body treatment to de-stress the body and mind. “With a unique technique of strokes, acupressure and organic oils, our hands, foot and head reflexology was an absolute wonder” hands, foot and head reflexology was an absolute wonder. Not to mention our wonderful therapist was kind and professional targeting our troubled areas with ease. After what seemed to be an everlasting massage (that’s how deep we were into the treatment), we then proceeded to our facial treatment, one which left us in awe. Biologique Recherche is a French biological skincare line with over 30 years of experience in developing the most powerful and effective skincare products in the beauty industry. Done right, and the outcome can be grand. Our therapist began with the preparation of the skin tailored to one’s needs, problematic areas and much more. The pH is balanced, gently exfoliating and the skin’s proteo-lipidic film is restored. Furthermore as the treatment progressed, the skin restores its radiance and glow with the use of high concentrations of botanical and biological extracts. A younger look was definitely achieved as our skin was balanced and hydrated with a naturally healthy glow. Ramadan Radiance
It’s the time of the year when you change everything, from your sleeping patterns and eating habits down to your beauty regimen. Resident contributor, Esmeralda van der Westhuizen, Marsa Malaz Kempinski’s Spa manager has got the right tips to look fabulous this Ramadan Did you know that there are numerous benefits of fasting during Ramadan? Not only does it bring you mental peace as you feel closer to the creator, it also replenishes your physical health. The long hours of fasting allow your body to get rid of toxins that accumulate as a result of our hectic lives. A balanced diet, good skin care routine and intake of fluids will assist in detoxification, resulting in naturally beautiful skin and a healthy body. We recommend some simple yet effective tips for you to stay fit and look radiant this Ramadan.
Hydrate:
Drink plenty of water and try to avoid artificial juices, sodas and coffee. Try to drink detox water, infused with cucumber, mint and lemon. This will hydrate the skin instantly with powerful vitamins – you’ll be getting all the Vitamin B’s, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc.
Skin Care: Choose hyaluronic acid based moisturizer to instantly
hydrate your skin. Apply the moisturizer with upward circular motions to provide maximum absorption, add lymphatic drainage effect and prevent swelling due to water retention. Do not forget to wear sun 100 www.ohlala-magazine.com
protection, apply SPF 50 sun block every time you go out and try to take your daily dose of vitamins to keep yourself healthy.
No Heavy Make-Up: Avoid wearing excess make-up during the day such as thick foundations and concealers. The combination of the strong sun rays with heavy make-up can be harmful to the skin and cause breakouts. Instead, use a strong sunblock and if you’re wearing any make-up during the day, try to go with products that are healthy and moisturizing such as BB creams and lip balms with an SPF. Fix Sprays: Misting sprays when used properly, provide a hydration
layer on the skin which can last all day. These products work best when sprayed, blotted and locked in with a moisturiser.
Snack Away: After you break your fast, have your daily dose of fibers and antioxidants such as nuts and berries. Antioxidants are high in fiber, low in saturated fat and cholesterol, and are good sources of vitamins and minerals. Not only do these snacks provide the necessary nourishment and hydration during Ramadan, they’re anti-aging too!

Australia is a magical place that falls on many people’s travel wish list but it isn’t exactly very close to the GCC, or anywhere for that matter. In saying this and even though it’s a decent 14 hour plus flight from the Middle East, imagine arriving after a long flight to this view of Sydney. The Shangri-La Hotel in Sydney is a five-star hotel located at the historic area called The Rocks. It’s within walking distance to Circular Quay, the CBD, Harbour Bridge and the Opera House and the luxurious hotel offers harbour views from every guest room, no matter which room option you choose. On arrival we had our own private check in allocated to us and even though we were early, our room was ready, so we dropped off our bags with the concierge and got stuck right into the advantages this hotel has in terms of location. As we had arrived on a weekend, we were lucky enough to experience The Rocks Markets, just a five-minute stroll away, vendors

A light breakfast is served every morning, offering a perfect spread of freshly baked breads, hot buffet, teas, coffees, pastries, fresh organic yoghurts, fresh fruits, & muesli. The best thing about this breakfast was that it wasn’t over the top, a small but quality selection. Coffee, tea and juices are available all day with a wonderful afternoon tea served from 2pm, offering sandwiches, tea, coffee, juices, scones and a variety of small cakes, perfect to put your feet up with a cuppa after a long day of sightseeing. Evening drinks and canapes are served from 6pm-8pm, the perfect excuse for a drink before heading to dinner. There is also access to more than 2,000 digital newspapers and magazines plus complimentary water and seasonal fruits delivered to your room. That evening we were booked for a dinner for two at the hotel’s signature restaurant, Altitude. Located on the 36th floor, with floor to ceiling glass windows not only did the view wow us but the service, the food and beverages completed our experience. The outstanding Sydney Harbour views accompanied the finest contemporary Australian cuisine. An 18-person private dining room is available for more intimate gatherings. The restaurant has won many awards including “Three Chef Hats”, Gault&Millau Sydney Restaurant Guide. The signature dishes from their experienced chefs are crafted with meticulous attention to every detail and presented at your table. This is definitely one of the highlights of the hotel and well worth a visit. The next day after breakfast, we walked down to the Ferry terminal and got a ferry across to Taronga Zoo and we spent most of the day at the Zoo looking around. Upon our return to the hotel we were booked in for a 60-minute signature massage at the Hotel’s CHI Spa which was a fabulous treat after a long day walking around. When we got to the spa, our host pushed open a huge secret door which lead into the long hallway of the spa.The host got us seated and offered a relaxing herbal tea, with a selection of green and chamomile already brewing. The treatment room was really spacious with a super soft comfy massage bed, light music playing and beautiful oriental scents. The ambiance was very relaxing and we couldn’t wait for the massage. The therapist worked hard on our tired and sore muscles and it was the perfect fix after lots of walking and a long haul flight. That afternoon, feeling fabulous after our massage we were booked in for our complimentary High Tea for two in the Lobby Lounge. The lobby is wrapped with floor-to-ceiling glass windows and features extravagant views of Sydney. It is an ideal place to relax and enjoy a refreshing drink while listening to lounge music. On our arrival we were served with a glass of fizz. The beautiful high tea had delicate and light, scones, finger sandwiches, cakes petit fours and the service was simply fantastic. Other things near to the hotel to go and see include: the Botanic Gardens, rooftop at the Glenmore Hotel, The Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb, Hyde Park, Kirribilli Markets, Oxford Street, Paddington for shopping, Darling Harbour a short 15 mins walk away from the hotel ), Sydney Aquarium ( which is also in Darling Harbour ) and Manly and Watson’s Bay by ferry. We can’t recommend this hotel enough for its perfect views of Sydney, delicious food, excellent service and gorgeous rooms. It’s well worth the long flight! www.ohlala-magazine.com 111

Pretty Girl
A Moroccan Affair
Designer Meriem Belkhayat showcased intricate and dazzling pieces at the Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Doha – leaving us simply salivating over her pieces Your designs are so bold, intricate and with no reservations. Tell us what was showcased on the runway? I presented on the runway, Oriental Athena, my spring summer 2016 collection. The first pieces were simple, easy to wear, and elegant. I tried to modernise kaftans. Looking to a minimalist silhouette, I’ve chosen straight and fit cuts that can transform the body. The couture pieces that followed were more sophisticated designs. Every piece respected the kaftan codes and in the same time it was luxurious, jewelled and royal. The collection also includes Swarovski crystal-encrusted belts, headbands and some pieces of gold headbands. Where did you draw inspiration for such pieces? Until today Ancient Greece still influences fashion, style, and art. Women of that era particularly inspired me. This civilization 116 www.ohlala-magazine.com
emphasized on elegance, modernity and timeless values that have remained in the history of costumes. We can find transparency, gold, embroidery, feathers and sequins. Have you always had a passion for design and fashion? How did you dive into the industry? I was born into a family of artists. My father is Abdelhadi Belkhayat, the famous Moroccan singer and my mother is a kaftan designer. The couture atelier was in connection with our family house and I think working in fashion was my destiny. After my graduation from the university, I joined my mother’s atelier and I launched my brand with my own identity. Scissors, fabrics and colours, I can’t imagine my life without them. And thanks to my mother, team and hard work the couture house and brand kept growing over years.
We caught up with the beautiful Kristina Fidelskaya for a scoop on her brand and graceful designs that she too showcased at The Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Doha Your pieces resonate elegance, femininity and a woman of power – where do you take inspiration from? I find inspiration everywhere around me within my daily life. The creative process never stops or ends when inspiration is all around you. What kind of woman do you design for? The Kristina Fidelskaya woman is a strong, confident woman who maintains her femininity and elegance. She is the woman we all aspire to be in the sense of having great fashion sense, being goal-driven and who is simply inspirational. Give us an insight into the pieces showcased on the runway? During the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Doha, I presented my first Ramadan Collection called ‘Noor.› It is a festive collection to celebrate the time of Ramadan, a very important time in the region. The collection consists of elegant evening gowns, beautiful abayas and dresses, targeted to the local market, but with a Kristina Fidelskaya twist. As women, what are some stereotypes we must break, especially in the fashion industry? I think nowadays a lot of designers create garments for the sake of creating them. I like to describe my clothes as wearable fashion. You will not see any bubble wrap or feathers in my collections. Simply elegant designs, beautiful fabrics and sleek silhouettes for busy women on the go, who still wants to look elegant and feminine.

Power Woman We can never get enough of strong, business-minded smart women. Ines Abel definitely fits the bill on this one. We speak to the woman behind Luxury Hospitality and how she’s overcome the barriers to blaze a very empowering trail
Ines Abel has a strong vision. She knows what she’s talking
about and what she’s doing. Hailing from France and living in Qatar for the past five years, she’s an entrepreneurial woman of substance and drive. With a background in luxury hospitality (she has an MBA in Tourism and Hospitality Management) she’s found fertile ground in Qatar – anyone who is anyone knows that this industry is the heartbeat of the region. “What I’m doing is focusing on bringing my agency, Luxury Hospitality to Qatar, with a distinctive approach. Luxury Hospitality specialises in niche luxury tourism and high-end hospitality management markets with an emphasis on three lines of business: service, luxury events and catering. I have experience in working in Paris and Monaco and now I want to bring the crème de la crème of luxury franchise brands to the Qatar scene,” says Ines, with the utmost knowledge. Her commitment to bring excellent and a spirit to serve in Qatar is palpable and very necessary – breaking into the industry here doesn’t come 118 www.ohlala-magazine.com
without its challenges but with clear strategies for clients to build their luxury brands (anything from fashion to food & beverage), Ines provides proposals and techniques that are carefully curated and customised as per the client’s demands to help develop the brand ethos. Paris and Monaco – these markets are reassuringly rich in luxury. Ines’ work in both these markets lends credence to what she is doing in Qatar. “We use Paris and Monaco as platforms for Qatari clients to see something different, for business opportunities and networks.” Luxury Hospitality exists between Qatar, Paris and Monaco – where Ines rotates between the three but Qatar is the headquarters. Sitting in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030, Ines has her work cut out for her, but she has come to face the challenges of growing a business in Qatar, as you’d imagine – but she has her equally cerebral right-hand woman: Narjes, who comes with similar expertise. “Work together on projects, working women, empower each other – when Ines told me about her project, I offered my expertise/knowledge, it came very naturally. Clients like the fact that we are women working together – they see that we are perfectionists and are detail-oriented,” says Narjes. Ines believes in everything she does. With Narjes in tow, the two are set to move mountians in the industry: “I have already been approached by Qatari companies for future collaborations,” adds Ines. With true entrepreneurial panache, Ines states: “We bring the best for the best.”

Ohlala Spotlight Ahead of their concert in Doha, Brian Travers, the mastermind behind the band, chats with Edward Smith about the band’s golden years and how they keep it fresh after so many years. What sort of set can people expect in Qatar? The classics or new material? First let me introduce myself, I’m the saxophonist of UB40, I write songs, I’m a composer, an arranger and I’ve had the luckiest of lives! (Let me pitch myself !) We are primarily a live band - making records is OK but can be a bit boring. We’ve made 30 albums so far and I’ve personally written about 200 songs, so we have a wide range of songs. However, because we haven’t been in this region for a while (nearly 12 years) we have to play lots of hit records.
UB40
if you are in countries like Jamaica country music plays on the radio and a lot of reggae songs you may know come from original country songs written by artists like Willy Nelson.
You say you haven’t got a particular style, but how would you define your music to people? I’d say we are a reggae band. When we were kids we all grew up together right in UB40, definitely one of music’s most iconic band of the 80s and might be the most the middle of Birmingham prolific bands we can think of. Since their inception in 1978, the band named after the which is an industrial city unemployment benefit form, has sold over 100 million records, released over 30 albums, and obviously, a poor city. At that time the city saw a lot of gave us instantly-recognisable tracks such as ‘Red Red Wine’ and if all this was not people coming from the West enough, they plan to release a new record in 2016 Indies Islands, like Jamaica or Barbados and they didn’t have televisions, so records and music were the only thing they had to express and live their culture. Reggae Are you planning some other gigs in the region? music was playing in all the night clubs in our area, so all our inspiration came Not this time. We are actually in the middle of making an album. from reggae artists even before Bob Marley, like: Dennis Brown or Gregory Anthony Isaacs to name a few. And even before that we were listening to Could you tell us more about this new album? Rocksteady and Bluebeat. Reggae was part of the youth culture back then. Yes some people are a bit against country music in Europe, but you know I’d like to play in Beijing or Shanghai one day. We’ve toured places most bands have never toured. We toured all over the world, even in Russia in 1986 before Glasnost and Perestroika and we played in India to 2 billion people on national television and it was crazy!

The-Rolls-Royce Dawn Open-air motoring simply doesn’t come more luxurious and elegant thanthis –we presenT the drop-dead gorgeous Rolls-Royce Dawn
A
t first glance, you could be forgiven for thinking the Dawn is merely a drophead (that’s ‘Rolls -Royce speak’ for ‘convertible’) version of the Wraith coupe. However, you would be very mistaken. This is because, rather than simply cutting the roof off of a Wraith, Rolls-Royce have redesigned the Dawn from the chassis up to be the perfect cabriolet. This has resulted in an 80% difference between the styling and shape of the Dawn and the Wraith. On the Dawn, the door lines are higher so that you sit lower in the cabin and experience less wind-noise, as well as adding to the aesthetics of the car when the roof is down. Plus, rather than go for the easy option in terms of soundproofing and body rigidity and give the Dawn a folding hard top, Rolls-Royce insisted on using a fabric roof for its classic aesthetic, which involved some serious engineering wizardry as they also claim that, with the roof up, the Dawn is as silent inside as the Wraith. 126 www.ohlala-magazine.com
Without sound-measuring technology we can’t attest to this, but we can say that the Dawn is as silent as you’d expect from a Rolls-Royce, and also as smooth and sublime. With the roof down, it’s entirely possible to have a conversation without raising your voice even at highway speeds, such is the design of this gorgeous drop top. However, the Dawn does share some elements with the Wraith; the BMW-derived chassis also seen in the Ghost, for example, as well as the 6.6l twin-turbo V12 and the impressive satellite-guided eight-speed transmission that automatically selects the ideal gears for you depending on the road ahead. As a result, the driving experience doesn’t noticeably differ from a Wraith – at the end of the day, you’re talking about two supremely comfortable, luxurious and powerful cars that are designed to offer the most refined motoring experience humanly possible. That is what defines a Rolls-Royce experience, and it’s the same across their range. The transmission is so smooth you aren’t even aware of gear
changes, and despite the size of the engine, only a faint rumble is heard even when you press the accelerator hard. Though the Dawn does feel big, it is surprisingly fast and agile. Don’t get me wrong, it’s never going to feel at home on a racetrack, but it accelerates with gusto, and pulls its considerable weight around corners well, thanks to the massive amounts of grip from the huge tyres. Parking it is also a doddle, thanks to an excellent all-round parking camera that helps you slot into spaces with ease! However, if you’re looking for excitement, you’ve come to the wrong car – unless, that is, you’re excited by soft leather, premium wood panelling and elegant design. Rolls-Royces are designed to be effortless, refined and relaxing, rather than thrilling or adrenalinepumping. The Dawn offers a broader appeal than the Phantom Drophead, as it’s more of a driver’s car than a limousine, and yet still offers that glorious Rolls-Royce luxury. Rolls-Royce call the Dawn ‘the sexiest Rolls-Royce ever made’. We’re not inclined to disagree with them… www.ohlala-magazine.com 127

Tokyo’s Confessions
Closing chapters are difficult, but feeling empowered along the way was something I thought I would never get to experience
As cliché as it may sound, I decided to venture on a solo trip to East Asia – Tokyo, Japan to be exact. I didn’t know what I wanted out of it, but one thing I knew to be certain: I needed to get away from this city, its chaos and experience Tokyo’s greatness. Many were perplexed as to my rushed decision of travelling alone with no plans and my lack of knowledge of what I was about to encounter. The reality of the situation was even more complex. Let’s rewind seven months ago when my then boyfriend had cheated on me, left me for his ex girlfriend, packed his bags and left Qatar for good in search for her ultimate forgiveness. Cute, isn’t it? I was left with nothing, but a nervous breakdown and low self-esteem. Devastated wasn’t even close to what I felt. Self-love? I had none at that point. Not knowing how to deal with yet another dramatic breakup – and this was by far the worst – I did what I knew best. Having gone through a very dreadful public relationship (and breakup), I decided to pick up the pieces he had broken and move on to becoming a better woman. One he clearly didn’t appreciate. And here is where Tokyo fits into this complicated puzzle. I packed my belongings with a rough idea of the city I was heading to and I was off 146 www.ohlala-magazine.com
on an 11-hour flight to an unknown destination. One that was clearly out of my comfort zone. From Harajuku to Ginza and Shibuya, Tokyo - it didn’t disappoint one bit. Cherry Blossom trees - nature’s magical creations, soothed me. As I came back from a wanderlust escape, it took me a while to grasp what I had actually witnessed. Still recovering from an excess of sashimi, sushi and other epicurean delicacies, the one true thing that definitely had changed was me. I was clearly not the same. Tokyo reaffirmed one thing I had lost while being too busy in an emotionally abusive relationship: I am good enough. It was then I had realised I was tired of having pathetic men walking all over my loyalty, honesty, commitment and other amazing things I was willing to offer. Whether you’re going through heartbreak, or remaining in an abusive emotional relationship, remember that you do deserve the very best. Don’t settle for mediocre love. Settle for a higher love, but more importantly settle for that true love – and that is self-love. Miss Ohlala is working on the relationship she knows best… and that is internal happiness.
