Editor’s Letter

I

recently got back from a trip to Burma. I was alone as I tend to be on my travels. It’s always my first choice when I see the world – it’s not because

I am anti-social or difficult to be with (references upon request) or that I have weird tendencies that shouldn’t involve other people. No, it’s because quiet is a lovely companion. My days are people-packed and demandheavy, where I feel like I could split into a million pieces if I receive just one more URGENT request. Such is the nature of the job; a job that has sculpted me into a woman but has also dug deep bags under my eyes. As a result, time away to escape the noise in and outside my head is essential. My trip to Burma was five days long. Five days is a long time to be in solitude even if you’re amongst a riot of colour and culture because it’s still very much an internal experience. I read, I slept till 9am (relentlessly charged body clock, can’t help it), I people-watched in silence, I biked for kilometres, I booked tables for one. Those five days recharged me and I hope Ramadan, being over a month, provides a complete 180 on my health and wellbeing which oft gets put on the backburner (as we all unconsciously do until we burn out) and then it’s too late to undo the damage. I’ve learned a lot about self-care through outside interests and for me, self-care is time alone in a vibrant setting or simply being at home when I don’t have to be ‘on’ all the time. It would be amazing if we could carry on the quiet tranquillity we afford ourselves during Ramadan. It’s easier said than done but with a little bit of effort, the results will be happily addictive.

Liquid Luxury On the occasion of the Holy Month of Ramadan, Al Zain Jewellery have launched a limitededition Perfume Vial and Necklace. We love strong smells, especially during Ramadan for it ignites an emotion and atmosphere that is mysterious and opulent. Al Zain Jewellery have launched an exclusive Elixir Necklace. Each piece is handmade by skillful artisans in the Al Zain factory using warm bronze metal concealing a gold lined inner vail where the wearer will store her most treasured perfume. Natural rubies and diamonds set on 18K gold ornaments gently embrace each end of the vail. The result being an item of desire and secrecy. Elixir took inspiration from the Ottoman’s jewellery designs which were characterized by a mix of Persian and Byzantine ornaments. Elixir provokes mystery, curiosity and a desire to touch and hold the vial, to explore what lies so well hidden and concealed within its bejeweled casing. Produced in a very limited number of pieces, Elixir is available across all Al Zain stores around the GCC region. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Confidence We love a woman who plays by her own rules. Cairo based Jude Benhalim has created a new high-end jewellery collection for just that woman. Urban Rebel is inspired by her ever evolving muse and her path in life. She knows herself. She finds comfort in who she is and revels in the beauty of her own individuality. The jungle-like metropolis she lives in is the embodiment of the system trying to cage her in but she is determined to break free of the concrete shackles. The collection reflects the struggle she faces with the system after successfully enduring her internal strife and emerging more confident and fearless than ever before. The strength she gained from her journey in Her Cosmos and Spectrum allow her to break through the barriers that seek to keep her individuality hidden. The Arabic calligraphy featured on selected pieces of the collection reflects the characteristics she found in herself along this journey. She has willpower; she has perseverance. She will reach the highest peak. 36

The Modest

Revolution

There’s a new age of fashion dawning. Modesty has been the buzzword in the industry of late. But it’s not a suggestion that we should all cover up – it’s that we should embrace it as a viable, elegant and mainstream fashion choice beyond reasons of faith. We speak with the founder and CEO of the latest online luxury destination: TheModist.com, Ghizlan Guenez about why she created this style platform and how she aims to change the perception of modesty. 56

www.ohlala-magazine.com

H

ow did the idea to create an online destination for modest fashion come about? I was brought up in a family where women dressed modestly and loved fashion and I experienced, first-hand, the frustration of trying to find pieces that are both modest and fashionable. For the longest time, we joked about opening a boutique that caters to the women in my family, and ultimately, when the time was right, I left the world of finance after 13 years and decided to start The Modist, an online luxury destination for women from across the globe who love fashion and to whom modesty is a form of life. Why do you think it’s taken this long to embrace modest fashion as mainstream? I don’t think that modestly has just surfaced in the world of fashion today. If you look at the archives of fashion from decades ago you will see a lot of modest fashion that translated into eras of elegance. I think there was a period where the emancipation of women was synonymous with showing skin, but I believe that we are going through a phase of better understanding and translating what the true essence of empowerment is, which in my view is the ability to express one’s self however one feels is authentic and true to them. It also helps that modest and demure looks are a macro trend which we’ve seen across the fashion capitals of the world. Do you think sleeves are sexier than skin? In the heart of what we do at The Modist is the belief in personal choice, and that the best choice any woman can make is to dress in exactly the way that she feels comfortable. At the end of the day, that’s really the essence of liberation. On a personal level, I absolutely prefer sleeve to skin and I find a lot of beauty and elegance in a demure look – it’s a style preference. Are we placing a higher value and respect on conservatively dressed

www.ohlala-magazine.com

57

women as opposed to women who find their style comfort in V-neck blouses and leg-baring skirts? Or is it simply a matter of having more options? There is none of that. The truth is that if you believe in empowering women then you must empower their choices whatever those may be, and I am a believer in empowering women. The Modist however speaks to a problem that exists in the lack of any elevated offering for a woman who chooses to dress modestly. Her current experience includes a lot of time wasted in sifting through products to find what works for her, and ultimately, she would have to layer, alter or amend pieces to make them work. We want to alleviate that experience and replace it with one that is easy, inspiring and fun. What makes the cut for The Modist? What pieces are an instant ‘yes’ for the website? One of our strengths is our intimate knowledge and understanding of how our woman dresses and how to tick the modesty box whilst keeping things trendy and cool. We exercise a lot of sensibility when we buy and style and we wear many hats: the fashion lover, the modest dresser and so on. Many pieces on our site are squarely modest but other pieces aren’t and that’s where the styling element comes in to make them modest whilst keeping things fresh. It’s not just about going for the easy solution of only choosing modest pieces, it’s also about inspiring our woman on how to wear certain styles that she may not have considered in the past. Many of the designers featured are Western brands. Besides the commercial gain, what do these brands benefit from by catering to women who want to be both faith and fashion conscious? Women who dress modestly don’t only do that for faith or religious reasons. The reasons women dress modestly vary including style preference, women who feel it’s more age appropriate to dress modestly and so on. We find that

“The reality is that modesty can be as diverse as fashion and can be on trend - in fact, IT IS on trend.” designers are inspired and excited to learn more about a woman who they haven’t necessarily engaged with deeply, and even designers who have worked with modest dressing women in the past love the idea of a specialist retailer and a platform that is dedicated to that woman. What for you is the most alluring modest fashion item a woman can wear? I love a beautiful jacket, whether it’s a perfectly-tailored and well-structured one, or a long flowy robe which is very much in trend now. I love throwing a jacket over any outfit to either dress it up or down. In what way can we push the modest fashion boundaries? What gives modest fashion its edge? One of the things that excite us is changing perception on modesty. There is a general feel that anything modest is dowdy and boring and should be a certain shape and colour. The reality is that modesty can be as diverse as fashion and can be on trend - in fact, IT IS on trend. That is evident in the styling on our site and in the editorials of our online magazine, ‘The MOD’. We believe in taking a fresh approach on modesty and translating trends in a way that works for our woman.
Which celebrities best represent modest fashion on the scene at the moment? We’re inspired by women from different walks of life, some are celebrities and others aren’t. I personally love Queen Rania’s style, Olivia Palermo, The Duchess of Cambridge, Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser, Coco Chanel and many more.

Ohlala Spotlight “I am going through a ‘more is more’ phase in my life; it’s what I feel most comfortable wearing. I enjoy covering and cloaking my body.”

The stars are aligning quite beautifully

for Anum Bashir, of Desert Mannequin fame. She’s 30, thriving and is very happily “not broke!” Three years since her digital platform launched, Anum has regularly if subtly dominated the fashion scene with her pithy and alternative stance on the industry, offering interesting caveats where “clothes are best served with a side of intellect” as goes the tagline of Desert Mannequin. It’s never just about the cuts or the colour with Anum, it’s about the wider context and talking points that clothes engender: “I love to sit with like-minded women and talk about politics among other topics. Fashion is oftentimes viewed as very frivolous and women in the industry are not as highly regarded as attorneys or surgeons are. It’s very incorrect because fashion and art help bridge divides between socio-economic backgrounds, it’s a very substantial industry,” she says. And if anyone should be praised for the gear shift in how the industry is being taken more seriously now, it’s Anum. Because she “doesn’t want to be recognised as someone who wore that shirt on a Sunday,” she has those thought-provoking conversations, she wants to push the envelope and she is, but brilliantly, without drowning her followers with self-centric narcissism. Since the launch of Desert Mannequin, she’s in a very different place right now. Shaking off the “impatient syndrome” of her 20s, Anum has reached a level of achievement where she doesn’t demand warp speed success. Now she’s happy to let each new venture marinate. “I used to be all about the yallah yallah yallah but now I let things happen when they are ready and it feels really good.” It was with this endearing impatience that led her to constantly add feathers to her cap but now, with a much more methodical and polished manner. Today, she’s between places. When we speak she’d just got off a plane from Doha after hosting a fashion event and was planning her outfits for an upcoming trip to New York. Add to that she’s in the exciting throes of promoting her recently launched “boy meets girl” collaborative capsule collection, DMxN-DUO for AW17 with a “really cool designer based in Tbilisi,” Natuka Karkashadze, which presents a distinct dichotomy and balance of genders with lace and corduroy in equal measure across the looks. Interestingly, this collaboration was formed from an initial friendship during a “purely R&R vacation in Georgia” with Natuka and now they are in talks to do a spring-summer collection next year “which will be three times as big. I love working with designers that I foster friendships with, it always makes for the most interesting projects.” With her recent hop from Doha to Dubai, she’s definitely

in the thick of the industry now and openly admits that being in the city “is a lot more suited given the nature of my job”. But she still maintains a low-profile sans arrogance and an entourage demanding PR-perfect copy about her. The exhaustive list of projects above is an incredible feat for three years and Anum has enjoyed the fruits of her labour around the world whether it’s in London, Paris or Dubai. She laps up the jollities and privileges as much as the next person that come with exclusive invites and events but she wants more – not more of it, but more beyond it. So, she’s given Desert Mannequin a lick of paint: “The platform outgrew its identity. The more I dabble into consultancy projects and work with different kinds of people in the industry, the more I want to get more stories from other writers involved on Desert Mannequin. Now it’s got a more publication feel to it now. I’m also launching a beauty subsidiary under Desert Mannequin called ‘Let’s Face It’” where quirky, independent beauty products will be put out based on Anum’s love of less is more makeup. As part of developing a stronger voice for her platform, she’s also launching the DMFM podcast - are you as win-tossed as me by now? – “I want to be having these kinds of conversations [our Skype interview] on the podcast – whether it’s about fertility issues, marriage woes or illnesses. It will have a strong fashion undertone to it but I want it to be real discussions with real discussion. I think the industry is very much romanticised but behind it are very real people who have their day-to-day struggles,” she notes. In the spirit of cultivating critical conversation, I ask Anum about her take on the revolution of modest clothing which has always been linked to faith rather than fashion conscious women. For her, dressing modestly has always been a natural gravitation: “I am going through a ‘more is more’ phase in my life; it’s what I feel

most comfortable wearing. I enjoy covering and cloaking my body. I love how TheModist.com drives home the message that dressing conservatively is not just for Muslim women, it’s for a woman who might decide that her breasts aren’t what they used to be, so she wants to cover them, you know?” With Ramadan upon us, Anum turns to what the Holy Month means in the modern Khaleeji world, as someone who was born and raised in the region. “On some level, as I get older, I have become more spiritual, reflecting on blessings, I give to charity, I’m listening to the Qu’ran every morning and I like to think at the end of the day, I am a good person that people like to work with. I am actually quite fundamental about the way I am choosing to navigate my 30s, it’s very important to me to build strong, lasting and loving relationships,” she says. But with all the noise on social media (the heartbeat of her brand) is there a way to strip back and ‘fast’ from it in the same way you fast from food? “A detox from anything in life is always a good idea. But we are living in such a fast world that really doesn’t allow for us to switch off. Being an entrepreneur is incredibly exhilarating and has given me a type of high I’ve never experienced before because I’m in the driver’s seat but I can’t sit here and promise I will stop. But I do hope to slow down and be in tune with Ramadan. It’s an interesting time to leverage my platform and share with everyone the beauty and importance of the Holy Month.” A recent encounter with a good person during one of Anum’s run-of-the-mill trips to the post office restored her faith in humanity. In a time when you turn on CNN and you’re seeing the world crumble with the worst people steering us in every which direction, you’d be forgiven for thinking that people aren’t compassionate or at least don’t have the time to show acts of kindness. But while Anum was retrieving a package, she was told she needed to pay an outstanding custom fee of AED10. She proceeded to give her card to pay for it but only cash was accepted. The closest ATM was a 10-minute walk away. Before she set off, a man stood behind her in line, offered her the AED10 saying it wasn’t fair for her to walk in the heat and it was his good deed for the day. “He wouldn’t accept the AED10 back even though I said I’d get it for him, so I insisted I owed him a burger or something!” As simple a gesture as it was, what we learn from instances like these, in light of Ramadan ahead of us, is that a life without kindness isn’t a very nice world at all. And if Anum is one thing as well, beyond her fabulous status, she’s a gracious person.

Beauty Insight

#MACxTheRealFouz in Dirty Rose (matte) is available now at Mac stores throughout The Middle East.

MAC has been driving innovation in cosmetic collaborations for over 15 years and has now partnered with icons from the worlds of fashion, pop culture, celebrity, music and art to bring to life their point of view on beauty including Fouz Al Fahad representing The Middle East. While each collaborator has a unique vision, they all share authenticity in their partnership with the brand. As a global beauty brand, MAC has chosen influencers all of whom have a style their own, a distinct beauty personality, a love for colour and a genuine connection with both the brand and with their followers. Tell us how the opportunity to create your own lipstick came about? When I started out four years ago it wouldn’t have crossed my mind that I’d be selected by a brand like MAC to create my own lipstick. Fast forward, and now it’s really happening! I’m so excited to work with a brand that I genuinely love and it’s an honour to be the first influencer in the region to have access to this unique collaboration. Of course I’m also so excited to be able to share this journey with all my followers. I always love travel, but a first for me on this particular trip was a visit to the MAC labs. Like many of my followers, although I wear makeup every day, I have never been behind the scenes of a massive beauty brand, to where the actual products are designed and produced. I discovered the different steps involved in making a lipstick, and it was a once in a lifetime chance.

Bespoke Collaborations

Known for her confidence and sophistication, influencer, Fouz Al Fahad (aka The Real Fouz) has teamed up with beauty power house MAC to create a deep, dusty rose lipstick. We caught up with her to find out how this cool collaboration came about. What is your first MAC memory? I can easily remember the first time I walked into a MAC store. I was looking for a lipstick and blushes. The sensation I had when I walked in was like when you enter a candy shop and you don’t know where to start. Ever since that day, I’ve been hooked. What was it like to collaborate with MAC? Working with the MAC brand is terrific, I feel like a little girl in a fairy tale. Some girls dream of creating their own fashion line; I have many dreams, of course, but the creation and launch of my own lipstick is up there on the list. It will be an achievement for my career. It’s also important to say that I think this collaboration wil send a positive signal for the girls from the region, and my followers, many of whom work hard in pursuing their own creative projects. Can you give us any hints on what your lipstick will be? I’ll give you three words and then you can let your imagination take you as far as you want, but let’s say: feminine, classy and powerful. 78

Beauty Column I love a good relaxing facial as much as the next girl, but sometimes you need to pull out the big guns. Skincare gurus are turning to techy gadgets and machines to get better results. These facials aren’t just about cleansing and toning: these are about long term correction and aiming for instant results. What’s not to love about that? Also, since the results last longer, expect to pay more than you would for a relaxing, creamy facial, but think of it as an investment in a glowing complexion.

Oxygen Facial

This one is a personal favourite. Oxygen is delivered under high pressure into the skin via a wand. Your therapist will normally steam, clean and exfoliate the face before applying the oxygen, to ensure they are working with a ‘blank canvas’. In some practices, the oxygen is infused with other supplements, which helps the skin to heal. A small, pistol-like device blasts cool air over your face and neck; there’s no pain but it’s not really one of those ‘relaxing’ facials, however you will instantly see results. Depending on how long you have this treatment, benefits can be seen for up to several weeks later. It is very easy to see how addictive this simple solution to younger more radiant skin can be.

Radio Frequency Facial

At Face Value

Technology is changing the skincare game in many ways especially when it comes to facials. Angela Beitz gives the lowdown on the new facials and why you need one now.

82

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Sounds weird? It’s definitely different to a standard facial but fear not as this facial is a real game changer. After cleansing, a gel is applied to your skin. Then, a wand with a thick, rounded end drives mono polar radiofrequency around your face to heat up the collagen fibres in your skin and stimulates the cells responsible for generating connective tissue and healing (fibroblasts) into creating new, younger looking collagen. This collagen then rises to the surface over 12 weeks to give you a more youthful, tighter rejuvenated skin that looks firmer and fresher. The therapist does put some pressure on the wand, kind of like the same pressure you’d expect with a deep massage. It feels warm, and occasionally, hot but then the machine automatically senses this and stops for a bit, allowing your skin to cool down before starting again.

HydraFacial

The HydraFacial treatment is a new advanced treatment in non-laser skin resurfacing and it’s so, so good for living here as it delivers the moisture that we all lack. HydraFacial is the only hydradermabrasion procedure that combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, hydration and antioxidant protection simultaneously, resulting in clearer, more beautiful skin with no discomfort or downtime. The treatment is soothing, moisturising, non-invasive and nonirritating. There is no discomfort during the procedure. It is often described as feeling like a “cool paintbrush moving slowly over your face.” A single treatment is perfect for those who need a fresh and glowing appearance for a special event or occasion.

Elemis BioTec Facial

This 50-minute treatment works wonders on skin and will deliver results no matter what your concerns are. The facial features a Elemis BioTec machine that can deliver five different modalities: Ultra-sonic, micro-current, galvanic, light therapy, and oxygen. A skincare expert helps you determine whether your skin needs more of a lift, smoothing out, brightening, or a deeper cleanse, and adjusts the machine accordingly to get the desired effect. The deep-cleansing option is perfect for when you’ve been neglecting your skin and need to hit the reset button for your skin. The rest of the session includes face masks, extractions, and a mini massage. Bliss!

Paradise Found With over 17,000 islands, Indonesia offers unlimited opportunities for paradise. Danae Mercer travels by boats and planes between the country’s hot spots and hidden stops.

Travel Escapes It’s sunset at the edge of the world.

The night before, we had gathered on the deck of the boat to watch the sky turn pink, yellow, blue. A rainbow appeared, then another, a volcano cresting on the horizon. But tonight was something special. Tonight, the bats would come. “Flying foxes,” a SeaTrek Sailing Adventures tour guide, Eva Villagrasa, says to me. “They’re called ‘flying foxes’, because they are so big.” As the moon comes up over Indonesia’s Satonda island, the ‘flying foxes’ emerge by the hundreds, darting to the mainland to eat fallen fruit. Indonesia is a country of some 17,000 islands. Travelling between them opens up a world of Komodo dragons, red-coral beaches, secluded surf spots and indigenous cultures. I set sail to explore it all, starting with SeaTrek on a seven-day trip from Flores to Bali (seatrekbali.com). My second day, I meet some of Indonesia’s ‘sea gypsies’. Two men, shirtless, bring a small boat beside our own. They begin unfurling a parcel of knick-knacks on the deck, shells and bits and bobs for us to buy. “Westerners think of the sea as this empty thing,” Peter Lape, professor of archeology at the University of Washington, tells me. He’s studied and visited Indonesia for over 22 years. Every time he comes back, it amazes him, delights him. “But for Indonesia’s sea people, it’s the space they know. It’s their land.”

“I spin in a circle and a school of silver fish swirl around me, catching the light.”

The ritz carlton bali

Later I dive from a dingy into the depths of the sea. There’s coral and fish, so many tropical fish. Clown fish, angel fish, manta rays. I spin in a circle and a school of silver fish swirl around me, catching the light. At night, over plates of Indonesian curries heaped beside white rice, I flip through a book, trying to name the wonders seen. My next island stop is Bali. It’s a melange of culture and colours: rice plantations and traditional palm-leaf offerings line the smaller backstreets; boho yogis meander between fruit stalls in Ubud. I travel with Ker & Downey to a rock temple in Uluwatu (kerdowney. com). Come sunset, 40 men circle a fire while performers carry out a traditional dance. “Just keep an eye on the monkeys,” my guide warns. “They snatch sunglasses and hats.” At The Ritz-Carlton Bali, I start my morning with a traditional blessing (ritzcarlton.com). A local shaman sits before me, dotting water on my face, smudging herbs behind my ear. He chants as the sun comes up over the sea. Later I rinse these things off in an outdoor tub facing a private plunge pool; the protective blessing, a blackwhite-red twisted yarn, stays wrapped around my wrist. Later that week, I head to the Four Seasons Sayan and Four Seasons Jimbaran Bay (fourseasons.com). The former comes wrapped in jungle, lined with rice plantations and a roaring river. The latter is larger, beachy, twisting along the coast with an infinity pool and surfing coach. At both, I meet with Java-native, Bali-residing Indonesian (and part of the Four Seasons Bali communications team) Ringga Salim. “Indonesians are happy,” he says with a smile. Think of the local philosophy: “It’s eat or don’t eat. As long as we’re together, we’re happy.” I visit a local market to explore the ‘eat’ side. A chatty chef from Four Seasons Jimbaran Bay shows me around. Women sit behind rows of fish, stacked and glinting and fresh. Stalls are filled with tropical fruits, foreign vegetables. “This is the bud of a banana tree, good when fried,” the chef says. “This is the local ginger. It smells different.” I sniff; it does. The unfamiliar names start blurring together but later, when we cook a dish of fish and curry and lamb, it all creates something magical. “Balinese people won’t lose the culture,” Salim tells me when I ask about the ever-growing influx of tourists. Would the local markets become for show? Would the offerings stop? “The culture here is so strong. It’s something you can’t see, but it’s something you can feel.” At trendy cool Katamama, Balinese culture is being shaped into something new (katamama.com). The property is hip, edgy. Bottles of bespoke, infused arak (the local spirit) line the wall of the cocktail bar / cafe. Rooms come with their own drinks lounge. Next door, the well-known Potato Head Beach Club attracts glamorous groups during the day. When night

Travel Escapes falls, they crowd onto wooden tables at Kaum restaurant, ordering Indonesian dishes dripping in coconut and spice. “Bali has changed,” Lina Suryati, the marketing communications manager at Katamama, says to me while I sip local coffee. It’s the best I’ll have in Indonesia. “But Bali still really keeps the tradition. Young people still learn dances and instruments, and speak Balinese. They also put out offerings three times a day.” Katamama is a spot that plays interpretations of traditional Indonesian. And that, says Suryati, is part of the joy. “Indonesia has such a wide range of cultures. We have over 17,000 islands, more than 600 tribes. There are different foods, languages, behaviours. You can see a lot of things in one place. “That’s what makes us interesting.” Bali is beautiful but it’s also busy. I want something quieter, more serene, less explored. I head to Nihiwatu. This luxury resort, nestled on Sumba Island, is the sort of place a surfing couple would go on honeymoon (nihiwatu.com). It’s all open-air villas, where sliding glass doors can be flung open to capture the ocean breeze and fine-dining meals taken with toes in the sand. One day, I nibble papaya and snake fruit while watching surfers walk their boards out into the waves. The next, I stretch on a massage table lined by palm trees and silence, the sea crashing beneath. It is, in a word, beautiful. It also has a strong charity arm: the Sumba Foundation. The organisation works with the indigenous Sumbanese to treat malaria, provide clean water, deliver nutritious school meals and prevent infant mortality. “When we started we thought maybe we’d do an orphanage, or support a school, but then we got here and saw how needy this place

was…” says Claude Graves, the Nihiwatu founder, as we talk over breakfast. I spent the day before visiting the local malaria clinic, stopping at water pumps that provide clean drinking water to villagers. Children waved, elders smiled. Tanned, relaxed, Graves turns his blue eyes on me. “The foundation changed my life for sure.” “People call us the Disney Land of surfing,” Jordan Heuer, marketing manager for Kandui Villas, says a few days later (kanduivillas.com). After two flights, two boats and two solid days of travel, I’ve reached the rather remote Mentawai Islands. “We have the most wave-rich area on the planet and some of the best waves, so it’s very special.” I’m not an accomplished surfer, but the isolated beauty of Kandui Villas appealed. Luxury ‘umas’ (a traditional Indonesian hut) face out toward the sea, lined by palm trees and mangroves, dotted with hammocks. A dining room — dominated by one large wooden table where guests gather every night — faces across an infinity pool. It takes me five days before I work up the nerve to surf. We head to ‘Four Bobs’ as the sun sets. A staff member comes out in the waves with me, wearing one fin as a guard against the coral beneath. “Ready?” He says. The ocean and air are warm. “Ready?” A wave comes, slow and gentle. He gives my board a nudge, telling me to paddle even though I already am. I ride the wave and hear the other guests — now, after nearly a week of being together, all friends — whooping from nearby. I ride another wave, then another, before clambering back onto the boat. I’m grinning. The others are grinning. Everyone’s lit with the glow of the sunset. As we watch, a rainbow — yet again — curls up to fill the sky. Somewhere among Indonesia’s 17,000 islands, I’ve found paradise.

Where Tradition Meets Luxury For a modern take on One Thousand and One Nights, we check into Sharq Village & Spa, a Ritz-Carlton Hotel and experience an Arabian oasis with many stories to tell.

Local Escapes The first thing

we thought when walking through the lobby at Sharq Village & Spa was how grand and opulent the finishes were – a usual feeling when walking through any five-star hotel in Doha but here, there’s a strong Arabian aesthetic that honours Middle Eastern charm with a subtle blend of modernity that makes you feel comfortable among 21st century touches but also takes you back to a time of fascinating desert nights. Upon check in we were guided to our room towards the beach. The grounds at Sharq Village & Spa are unending, a labyrinth of manicured grounds, punctuated by the cool blue waters of the impressive swimming pool in the centre, where palm trees dot the perimeter. You could spend hours walking the communal areas of the hotel at a leisurely pace as the sun goes down, walking in and around the traditional ‘housing’ style rooms and suites. Our room was the perfect marriage of East meets West overlooking a lovely courtyard setting. The traditional fixtures of Arabia made the room feel very cosy and elegant with a tinge of exotic darkness that made for a different hotel experience to the usual contemporary, uber modern take. Of all the positives in the room, the biggest joy was the bed. It felt like we were slumped in a mattressed hammock – this definitely made it hard to get out of bed each morning! The fluffy (and huge) pillows were heaven-like too. But each morning however, we took to the beautiful pool, which stretches across the main communal area of the property. There we did laps before going out to meetings and because it was quiet, it was a very zen experience. Other than the main pool, there’s an infinity pool over-looking the sea, as well as a children’s pool and then of course, the beach, which at night is most impressive with the twinkling lights of the Doha skyline reflecting in the waters and providing a gorgeous atmosphere. After a day of meetings, one night we took to Six Senses Spa which is located in and amongst the grounds. It feels like you’re entering Souq Waqif, because it is indeed inspired and modelled after the traditional feel and set up of the Souq. The unique spa village incorporates traditional Qatari design which make the Six Senses Spa feel historic as it’s all connected by a labyrinth of weaving pathways, cascading fountains and lush greenery, all aimed at creating a sense of inner peace and wellbeing. The 23 treatment rooms are fashioned on a traditional Qatari environment where typical village houses have heated stone massage beds, mud baths and private majlis (meeting) areas. Traditional Arabian, Thai and Swedish therapies are supplemented by more holistic offerings such as naturopathy and, with specialist visiting practitioners bringing an even wider range, it’s possible to experience a different treatment every day for an entire month- and spend the whole day there. The traditional aromatherapy treatment we had, which incorporated both Swedish and Thai techniques was as soothing as it was energising. Finishing off with some very pungent ginger tea, this was the perfect way to end the day. The best part of the hotel stay had to be the culinary offerings. While we treated ourselves to Al Liwan’s all day dining buffet every day for breakfast and lunch – it houses some of the best Lebanese 92

fare we’ve had in a long time – we were overwhelmed by Al Dana restaurant by the beach. With Chef Evangelos Liakouris’ exquisite prowess for seafood, we had the most sumptuous meal of our threenight stay. We started off with a winning Sea Bass Ceviche which was the perfect blend of tangy and juicy – we have a particular penchant for ceviche – it’s become a thing now. The coriander, coconut and chili combined is swimmingly fresh. This was followed by a mammoth Seafood Platter for two which included Omani lobster, tiger prawns, hammour, salmon, scallops and a sinfully creamy lemon butter sauce. The crowning dish for the night though, was the extra special and extra unique Deconstructed Black Forest cake. In the words of Chef Evangelos, he says: “The base is a mango cremeux, in order to balance the fatness of the chocolate. On the top we sprinkle a maple syrup sponge that gives some moisture to make it look like wet soil. And lastly, we use variety of berries and microgreens so it looks like a real forest.” This was possibly the most moreish and decadent chocolate dessert we’ve had in a long time. From presentation to mouthwatering taste, this is a fine finale. For more information and reservations call: 4425 6666

Personal Luxury Having officially opened last month, we went to the sophisticated David Morris boutique on The Pearl, where we sat with Managing Director, Jeremy Morris, the third generation in the family business, to talk about the uniquely British jewellery brand and what luxury means to him.

94

www.ohlala-magazine.com

What sparkled your passion for jewellery? Ah, it was beaten into me by my parents! I grew up in a family that spent the whole time talking about jewellery – as a kid I used to go to my father’s workshop and play around with stones, metal and run old pennies through the mills. It dawned on me when I was at art school years later, ‘what am I going to do?’ and I thought, well I’m artistic, I may as well learn how to make jewellery. Effectively you were born into this world, but how dexterous and skilful do you need to be to make jewellery? Technically, it takes a long time. Physically to learn how to turn up a piece of metal and put holes in it is another thing from putting style into it. I was blessed with having jewellery parents because I picked up lots from them and then I worked in Paris for a while in a wonderful workshop where I really appreciated the intricacies of making beautiful jewellery. What makes for really beautiful jewellery? For me it’s all about being wearable and light. Whether it’s a flexiband bracelet or a choker, they have to have movement. Our pieces move with your body and are versatile, where you can wear them from day to night, it’s very playful and almost like a second skin. There’s nothing worse than wanting to take off a piece of jewellery because it’s too heavy. High end jewellery can be quite intimidating, but the aim is to make women feel young and wonderful. What do you wish collectors of David Morris knew more about the brand? People are so into certificates, they lose touch with what they are buying. The stones and gems need to vibrate with you. The emotion is being lost a

bit. Jewellery is like music in that it evokes an emotion in you and I think people are more interested in knowing if it’s a Burma sapphire or not. David Morris clients can be assured that they will have the best stones and quality craftsmanship – we are the only jewellers on Bond Street that still has their workshop upstairs – it’s all in house. It’s very personal and that extends onto the products too. The products should say and mean something to you. If diamonds or stones don’t show their colours at night, then what’s the point in wearing them? If you go to dinner, you’d want to wear something that will sparkle as much as you would want it to. What stones are you most drawn to? I like emeralds. There is something about the great emerald colour, it’s beautiful. How do you feel about opening up a boutique in Doha? I’m delighted to be here, it always amazes me how much is going on. We’ve brought a few showstoppers to Doha to blow people away as we have so many Qatari clients. The Pearl is a great location for us, too. What does luxury mean to you? I think luxury should be a unique experience. I am saddened by homogenous experiences at boutiques that are just the same as the next, it’s boring. All our client advisors know our clients inside out; they have a distinctly personal relationship with them, it says a lot. Our client advisors will be able to see a piece and instantly know which client it would be perfect for. Our services go above and beyond. What personal luxuries do you indulge in? I have a beautiful house in Mykonos which I love. Going down for a swim in the little bay outside my home is luxury to me. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Where The Wild Flowers Grow An intense perception of vivid flowers, Selma Benomar’s latest collection of kaftans pay tribute to the most stunning floral creations of nature.

Selma Benomar, the renowned Moroccan kaftan label founded in 2012, recently launched her latest collection. Perfect timing with Ramadan upon us, the range showcases the luxurious caftans based on Selma’s unique perception of flowers and her inspirations that arises from this colour palette. With the new pieces, each one narrating a story with the frenzy of fabrics, the flower garden inspired collection goes on to portray fresh flowers and their transience through the caftan design. With floral couture an essential part of the fashion theme of the brand, this range in particular is heavily influenced by rare flowers. From poppies to fuchsia, the exoticism and sensuality of beautiful flowers; nature evoked through the perfect mix of fabrics brings the caftans to life. Selma’s inspiration lies amongst the rare flowers that intrigue her love for colors. The luxury couture designer goes on to say, “I usually love to travel and it is a huge part of my designing process. I travel twice a year to South East Asia, close to the unique nature these countries have, both awe-striking and stunning.” With the luxurious fabrics beautifully worked and opulently embellished; the brilliant skills of Moroccan artisan is very visible. These are the codes of the brand and the focus of the latest collection. Offering a fine balance between simplicity with few details, the colors alone create the expression inspired by the beauty of rare flowers as perceived by designer Selma. 104 www.ohlala-magazine.com

T

he boutique hotels in the Souq Waqif aren’t especially well known to Doha’s residents but they are a secret we can happily let you in on. And one secret in particular is worth knowing but not shouting about. After all, we don’t want everyone to know the best secret of all now, do we?! Al Jasra boutique hotel is hidden to the right of the souq as you look at it from Al Corniche. It’s a building neither tall nor big and you can quite easily walk past it and never know you did. But stop, because there lies a treat within worth stepping in for. I’m talking about Argan which is a Moroccan restaurant par excellence. I had been before during Ramadan where I was impressed by their ability to offer quality as well as the quantity you come to expect with an Iftar in the Gulf. On an ordinary evening recently, I walked in and went for a sample of dishes that showcased their menu and once again, the watchword is quality. The chef is Moroccan and uses Argan oil in appetisers, mains and desserts. Argan oil is a quintessentially organic Moroccan plant oil made from the kernels of the argan tree; I know of people

Hidden Tastes

who apply the oil on their face as part of their skin care regimen but I’d not knowingly eaten it before. It is however the signature ingredient in all dishes in this restaurant. You can generally start there with a cold mezze or some hot harira soup. The cheese samoussa is a stand-out for me and the use of ricotta cheese with mint makes it so much tastier than you might expect with other cheese that can be quite dry. The salad of marinated couscous with argan oil mixed with fresh coriander and topped pomegranate seeds is fresh and tangy. The argan oil is excellent for dipping their fresh, warm bread into.

I did have to pace myself. The main course was just arriving and it was a healthy portion. As a lamb lover, I mostly ate their authentic lamb tagine. While this was authentic, it was also deeply luxurious and delivered with the chef ’s signature touches namely caramelised prunes and almonds. When eaten with the tender lamb itself it was a superb blend of flavours that complimented each other exquisitely. I tucked into a little of the braised chicken cooked in lemon and saffron which was also delicious but for me, the lamb tagine with almonds and prunes was the winner and a winning combination. I subsumed with great alacrity both my

I did though dip my spoon in and can highly recommend the amlou ice cream if you’ve some room left. It is a definite pallet pleaser after the meat. Amlou is a mixture of ground honey, almonds and, er, oh yeah, argan oil! I wish I could say it was similar to this or to that but really it is a compound flavour all of its own. To borrow an overused adjective, it is unique! We ate most of our food under a majlis but there are comfortable tables and chairs scattered around the edges for added privacy. The attention to detail is outstanding and the atmosphere is intimate, quiet and ornately beautiful. Get yourself along to Argan but remember, it’s out little secret in the souq! A trip to The Pearl Qatar is incomplete without dining at the most talked-about restaurant at Porto Arabia – the one and only Burj Al Hamam. Shabana Adam takes a seat at the lavish Lebanese hotspot for delicious food and flavoursome shisha, with a sophisticated touch.

hen it comes to Lebanese fare, one place has become synonymous for its mouth-watering menu, warm hospitality and upscale classy environment. Of course, we’re talking about none other than Burj Al Hamam. For over 40 years, this trademark name has been satisfying guests with an array of fresh and tasty recipes made up of home-cooking, including generous appetisers, meaty mains, seafood delights and yummy desserts – there’s really something to whet every appetite. If, like us, you want a lovely view to accompany your culinary experience, opt to sit outside where the Porto Arabia Marina’s many tall buildings spectacularly glitter in the water and its yachts galore. Burj Al Hamam serves popular authentic dishes that reflect the diversity of the Levantine culinary disciplines. Presenting a selection of cold mezza and salads, such as hummus, tabouleh, fattoush and moutabal, and hot mezze, like the delicious kebbeh and fava beans with olive oil and spices, you’ve got nothing but choice to kick-start your meal. Standouts include the smooth Mouhamara, the bite-sized Fatayer with zesty spinach filling, the lip-licking deep fried cheese rolls and the hot pepper infused Batata Harra. Main courses are also a delight. Choose everything from grilled lamb, shish taouk and kofta, lobster, shrimp, red mullet and sea bream – you’re bound to find something that calls out to your cravings. Being the dedicated meat lovers that we are, our eyes light up when a platter of juicy Kabab Orfali with grilled onions, tomatoes and hot peppers arrives at the table. An excellent portion to share, we love the quality of the ingredients – you can taste the smoky grilled flavour in every bite. Arayess Jibneh (toasted cheese on pita bread) is a simple yet filling choice – and satisfies the hunger of the vegetarian diners at our table. With desserts like Halawat El Jibn (cheese rolls) and the famous Knefeh (semolina and cheese) plus a huge variety of authentic Lebanese sweet treats, you’d be crazy to miss dessert! Alas, we were full to the brim and therefore decided to check out the famous shisha offering at the restaurant. Not only is there an abundant of flavours under three categories; Traditional, Special and Exclusive but Burj Al Hamam is the first in Doha to adopt the use of a Mystique Ice Hose – a small ice tip that’s put into the shisha pipe for a soothing and calm effect on the throat. We get a Grape & Pomegranate shisha which is topped up with coal, constantly. In fact, the service at Burj Al Hamam and the friendliness of the staff really takes the entire dining experience to top-notch level. Burj Al Hamam truly captures the spirit of homemade Lebanese cuisine and blends this with the authenticity of Levant hospitality, all packaged into an atmosphere of fine dining. We’re sure you’ll leave with full bellies, big smiles and happy hearts!

The Sweetest Thing What comes to mind when you think of chocolate in Qatar? Yes, our minds go to Fauchon too who recently won the Best Patisserie in Doha for the 2017 FACT Dining Awards. We sit with Joumana Ghalayini, the general manager of Fauchon in Doha to talk all things delicious and sweet. Are you doing anything special for Ramadan this month? We have several preparations. In our showroom, the gift baskets have Oriental touches like the lamp and Arabic style accessories. We try to promote these items because the clients like to always see something new. As well as Ramadan we have the occasion of Gergaoon in the middle of the month, which is very important to us as our clients like to get gift baskets. It’s a very VIP occasion for us. We also have a cake for Ramadan which combines Arabic sweets with a French style. We also have a Kunafa that has rosewater and mascarpone cheese to give it both a Middle Eastern and French twist. The presentation is Parisian and the ingredients are Middle Eastern. Have you decided to do anything for Suhoor? This year we have created a selection of sandwiches for takeaway and we have distributed flyers for this where you can get a variety of hot and cold sandwiches. It would be great to try these from 10pm to 2am. We know the young generation will like these sandwiches because they enjoy chicken escalope for example – it’s quick bites. We will also have a buffet menu during Ramadan too. Outside of the Ramadan season, what are your best sellers? 110 www.ohlala-magazine.com

Our chocolate! We are very well known for our chocolate. Even Fauchon Paris have admitted that the only region in the world where they ship the most quantity of chocolate is Doha! The salt of this operation is the chocolate – but of course, too, the macaroons are always popular. I am really happy though that we are number one for chocolate. Why do you think Doha is the perfect place for Fauchon? Fauchon is made up of the chocolate, the grocery and the patisserie, so here they call me the queen of retail because I am the only one who has shipped this quantity. The reason of having this movement and stability in our sales is because of the packaging. We really honour the Fauchon packaging but we also add the Eastern touches with silver trays and Oriental hints. Do you think the name Fauchon has driven this success or what you have made of it? The name Fauchon is on the top – everybody knows it and it is a well-respected brand. But to maintain that, it’s our effort. Fauchon is located on Salwa Road: 4432 4888 and Al Sadd: 4435 5588

Haute Cuisine We speak with a genius behind gastronomy: Alain Ducasse. In his words: “I propose, I do not impose.”

With 30 restaurants and more than 21 Michelin stars to his name, Alain Ducasse is the emperor of modern French Cuisine. Nonetheless, he is seen as both a genius and guru by many of his peers around the world. He anticipated trends, influenced international gastronomy and forged new paths to forward his art with always one motive: putting the vegetal and the local in the heart of the plate. By using simple slogans such as ‘eat less but better’, or ‘vegetal en premier’ (vegetable first) he basically re-invented the French haute cuisine by ridding it of much of its excesses and engaging it in a more ethical and sustainable approach. “The planet’s resources are rare, we must consume more ethically and equitably,” Ducasse keeps on repeating. We had the opportunity to meet the charismatic chef on his one-day visit to Doha at the iconic IDAM address (restaurant) in Doha. The force of his presence is palpable—he is very smart and well spoken—in fact Ducasse looks more like a French Ambassador or a ‘grand patron’ (CEO) more than a chef. He is, of course, all three rolled into one. We speak with him to see what he thinks about the fusion between French and Middle-Eastern cuisine.

How did IDAM start? Firstly, I like exceptional venues and if I wasn’t a cook, I would have become a traveller or an architect. When I was offered by to develop a restaurant by Sheikha Mayassa Al Thani with my fellow friend and designer Philipp Stark in the iconic MIA, designed by architect Pei, it couldn’t have been more exiting. IDAM was born at the crossroads between two very strong concepts—integrating an iconic landmark and a restaurant offering a cuisine which appeals to local people. Indeed taking into account local tastes, without straying from the French cuisine techniques was my challenge. It was more about seducing the local clientele, than the expats. How would you define the cuisine at IDAM? At the beginning Sheikha Mayassa Al Thani wanted to build a menu around seasonal vegetables from the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern region. We integrated influences from Morocco, Lebanon and India (in particular) to create a cuisine based on contemporary Mezze— the key element was the fusion between local flavours and techniques of French cooking. As I like to say, I’m a local chef with a global expression. In a nutshell we can say that IDAM is still a contemporary French haute cuisine as per its DNA offering Middle Eastern flavors to seduce local palates. Is adaptation the key of success in your industry? Yes, when I go somewhere, I don’t impose: I propose. What is the common denominator between all your restaurants across the world? Refinement, elegance are the keywords. A cuisine based on local flavour and in osmosis with its environment and a cuisine that never misleads the DNA of traditional French cooking—the art of preparing food, the art of cooking and seasoning, harmony between containers and foods, peering between 112 www.ohlala-magazine.com

food and drink, just to name a few. One other common denominator seems to be the ongoing search for the most unparalleled locations in world famous landmarks. Less fat, less salt, less sugar, more seasonal products and vegetables. Speaking about vegetable, can you tell us more about your signature dish named cookpot? Yes the Cookpot has become one of my signature dishes with the idea that

over time more attention must be given to cereals, grains and veggies. It is a universal dish and we should decrease the amount of protein we eat and respect our environment. Are you opening a restaurant in Dubai? Yes, it is new concept called Mix and is due to open at The Emerald Palace Kempinski Hotel Palm Jumeirah soon. In Dubai everything is different, the population consists of expats from different cultures and backgrounds. We will open a multi-faceted venue with a bar, a roof top lounge, and some restaurant concepts, all under one roof. It is based on a concept we opened 13 years ago in Las Vegas. We are also planning to open soon in Macau and Singapore with the same concept. Which other great chefs do you admire? I like the work of Brazilian chef, Alex Atala who sources products directly from The Amazon. He discovered new species of animals and plants over the past four years in the vast Amazon rainforest and we don’t even know if some of these products are comestible or not. It means there are still unexplored destinations fit for culinary lovers! And you have Gastón Acurio, the super chef who put Peruvian cuisine on the world map and who used gastronomy as an important factor of economic growth in South America. These two chefs deserve some recognition for their amazing effort, one because he is hunting new species in The Amazon and the other one for his honourable work in promoting local economy across the world. What is your motto? Never cease to work more, faster, and better - that’s my rule. www.ohlala-magazine.com 113

Lava Shell Massage

The W Doha Bliss Spa have a unique massage that you’ve probably never heard of – but this is the most exciting part. We love new ways to relax. We explore the benefits of this South Pacific treat.

For hundreds of years, South Pacific Islanders have harvested beautiful Tiger Striped

Clams for food, and then thrown the shells away. Now, it has combined these discarded shells with porcelain, creating the world’s most powerful heated massage tool. A lava shell massage is a type of massage therapy that utilizes tiger-striped clams to give a unique feeling and enhance the experience of the massage therapy. Tiger-striped clams are native to the Philippines, and their uses in massage therapy is becoming more popular all the time. They are smooth to the touch, and are filled with heat packs and activator fluids to create the heat. Here are some of the benefits of a Laval Shell Massage.

Increase Lymph Activity and Reduction of Body Toxins

The warm healing properties of a lava shell massage stimulate lymph activity in the body. This in turn helps your natural ability to flush toxins from the body. You will notice an improvement in your feeling of well-being, with the added benefit of being able to fight off illnesses and having a stronger immune system.

Increased Blood Flow

The warmth from the shells and the deep tissue techniques from the therapist increases blood flow in the body. Blood flow is important of the healing process when you have injuries and muscle pains.

Relief in Painful Arthritic Joints

Used alongside the massage techniques a therapist will tailor to your needs will help you feel much better. Always discuss your pain points and needs with the therapist before and after receiving treatment to get the most out of it.

Gives You Healthier & Younger Looking Skin

The massage process helps to stimulate the body’s production of new and strong skin cells. This leaves you with healthier, younger looking skin. A wonderful bonus of this type of hot massage.

Incredibly Relaxing

Possibly one of the main benefits that keeps people coming back from more with a lava shell massage is how relaxing it makes you feel. You will enter a deep state of relaxation, take it from us.

Soothing Sore and Stiff Muscles

If you work in a labour-intensive job or exercise hard, you will know that dull pain and soreness in your muscles that takes days to recover from. With a hot lava shell massage your recovery will be much quicker.

Hygienic and Natural

Lava shells are very hygienic when compared to some other methods and tools used in massage. They are naturally sources items too. In fact, the clam shells used to be discarded before their potential in massage was realised. For more information or reservations call: 4453 5000 118 www.ohlala-magazine.com

The New Moon Glow

Our columnist Pallavi The Holy Month is here and we are all touched by its divine aura. Whether you Patil tell us how to keep to are fasting or not, the beauty of the crescent won’t fail to impress you and remind us of its significance. a healthy regime during the Physically, fasting in Ramadan is a perfect detoxifier for our whole system. It is a natural immune booster which enhances the ability of the lymphocytes to fend off bacterial attack Holy Month.

and purifies our blood. It gives the chance for the gastrointestinal system to regenerate its lining, boosts the detoxifying powers of our liver, and cleanses our kidneys. Fasting during the Holy Month can get difficult, especially during the peak of summer. Shake off the sweet temptations and indulge in the right food to sail smoothly through Ramadan! During your daily Sohour and Iftar ensure you opt for vegetables such as carrots, broccoli, lettuce and spinach as they contain the vital vitamins and minerals that your skin needs. The same goes for nuts and fruits such as strawberries and blueberries, which contain skin-enhancing antioxidants. Dates are a great source of vitamin A, iron, potassium, magnesium and calcium while dried apricots can help to boost the brightness of your skin. Keeping your skin healthy is as important as having a healthy diet during Ramadan. Fasting for long hours along with the hot weather and lack of fluids, might lead to skin damage and dryness. This is exactly why you should be taking extra care of your skin during this holy month. Make sure to drink not less than eight glasses of water (or more if possible). Other fluids work as well, whether the traditional Ramadan drinks or even a cup of green tea. They can do magic as they rejuvenate your skin! Try to engage more salads, vegetables and grilled meat/chicken into your daily Iftar, instead of fatty, fried and heavy food. Why? Sticking with the healthier version helps you get a clear skin, which isn’t only glowing but also acne free. Moisturising your skin during Ramadan is extremely important. Make sure to apply a hydrating facial cream and body lotion after showering/bathing and before bed. If you’re heading out, try to seek shade where possible and opt for a day cream that contains SPF to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. It is also recommend you keep a facial mist (rosewater is a great option) on hand as this will help cool off the skin and maintain the moisture levels throughout the day. As Ramadan fasting is basically an exercise in self-discipline, for those who are chain smokers, food nibblers or caffeine addicts etc. it is a good opportunity to break the habit, hoping that the effect will continue when the month is over. Ramadan is the time to practice self-restraint, a time to cleanse the body from impurities and re-focus on one’s self. Let this Ramadan bring about the changes that will last a life time for you. Ramadan Kareem!

DivA Drives

HittingTHE UAE roads with Italian Style Two cars, the desert and an insatiable love of driving. We roar into action with the Maserati Levante and Maserati Quattroporte.

Maserati Levante

The Levante is the true definition of versatility, it delivers performance, all the elegance and the luxury you expect from a Maserati and it combines it with an outstanding off-road capability. Yes, you need to test drive it to believe it. First we took a Levante S with its 430HP to the Dubai Velodrome racetrack and we tested the incredible adaptive air suspension system that can adjust the vehicle’s ride height by a range of 85 mm! When using the lowest center of gravity on the racetrack, the Levante was perfectly balanced with a (50-50) weight distribution between front and rear and it delivered the performance of a muscle car. We did the 0-100 km/h run in a reasonably-quick 6.3 seconds! Nonetheless the most powerful Levante can sprint to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 264 km/h so it has absolutely nothing to envy to its German rivals, the Porsche Cayenne or the BMW X6. Particularly amusing was taking it off-road just outside Dubai. Indeed with its Off-Road 2 modes raising the vehicle by 40 mm above normal mode, it does very well off-road and there was more than enough juice 122 www.ohlala-magazine.com

to power through soft sand—maybe not better than the most advanced Range Rover but surely better than the Range Rover Sport! However, it is hugely unlikely that a Maserati owner would expose his Levante to dune bashing and other extreme experiences, but it is reassuring to know the car can perform if necessarily.

Maserati Quattroporte

On the second day, Maserati gave us the opportunity to test drive the new Quattroporte S, on the road that leads to the top of Jebel Hafeet (the emirate’s highest peak). We had the choice between two unique trim options : GranLusso or GranSport. These two distinctive trims are available as an upgrade for all Quattroporte V6 powertrain versions. As a first impression in both models the interior feels really huge! The GranLusso (big luxury) model feature different bumpers and interior combinations to create a luxury feel with attention paid to small details such as the use of Zegna silk for the seating upholstery, a fourzone climate control or heated seats—while the GranSport option features exactly what you would expect of sportier trim—aluminum

paddle shifters, stainless steel sport pedals or a carbon fibre steering wheel definitely give a sportier presence. Also, when you approach the rear of the Quattroporte GranSport, your eyes are literally blown up by the dynamic exhaust ports at each corner and a piano black rear spoiler which gives a sharp and aggressive finish to the Italian beauty. The S model uses a Two twin-turbocharged engine that makes 404 hp and 406 lb ft and it really sounds fantastic—but what else can you expect from a Ferrari-built engine! We couldn’t drive it but the QP also exists as a V8 model. The twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 puts out 523 hp and 524 lb-ft and makes it not only the fastest four-door Maserati ever built with a 307 km/h top speed, but brings it closer to the standards set by Germans competitors (BMW 7-series or Mercedes S class). However, we can easily say that the QP is a viable alternative to its German rivals in terms of style. It was a wonderful experience driving it through Al Ain’s hairpin mountains and I can’t wait to go back and discover more of these Italian beauties. www.ohlala-magazine.com 123

The No Contact Rule

If you’re currently going through a recent breakup, then you might want to continue reading this column. It gets better, I promise. But before it does, an uncomfortable amount of time needs to happen. As I’m transitioning from being in a relationship to being completely single, let me give you a piece of advice to navigate those turmoil waters with a bit of ease. Breakups aren’t easy, and keeping control of the situation is key to walking away with dignity and self-respect. But how do you achieve that? As love gurus call it: The No Contact Rule is a magical formula of 30-days of no contact with your ex to provide clarity, space and perspective; that implies no text messages, no peeking into your ex’s social media, no phone calls, and no stalking with the help of friends. I know, it sounds unbearable and unachievable. But as I’m entering into week 130 www.ohlala-magazine.com

three of the no contact rule, its magic formula has finally kicked in, and in ways I didn’t imagine it would. Many use this good old trick to get their exes back, but in reality it’s there to provide detachment from your relationship and see the bigger picture with a new set of eyes. Sometimes the end result is pretty, when you realise your ex is your forever, or maybe, you’re destined to walk away from it all, keeping your standards high. Whichever it might be, make sure you give yourself some time and space to regroup and energise with all the good in your life. Miss Ohlala has decided to keep the no contact rule as a forever thing…
