EDITOR’S LETTER Women empowerment is by no means how hot or beautiful a woman looks, how many followers a woman has on instagram or even how many friends a woman has on Facebook. Empowerment must be derived from knowledge or education because with knowledge comes power. After all, ‘strong women lift each other up’ and women empowerment is about extending a hand to a fellow woman who needs assistance in elevating herself to the next level, may that be emotionally or even in a professional capacity. The #MeToo movement and the rise of socially conscious millennials who support brands they like have intensified discussions of how women are portrayed in fashion advertisements and has brought out the topic of embracing individuality. This discussion is important and we all need to listen even if we don’t completely agree, as ignorance in this scenario is definitely not bliss - just ignorant. We all need a pick-me-up now and again, and, if that means you taking some ‘me’ time then so be it! Make sure that you schedule this time in for yourself and don’t look at it as something that is flexible and end up encroaching on it with things that feel more important. YOU’RE IMPORTANT! This month we have a stunning lookbook showcasing the supreme liberty that is Cullinan - Rolls-Royce. Confident lines amplify Cullinan’s formidable presence as an iconic silhouette reflects its robust beauty. Showcasing parallels of confidence with individuality is something that we can all take note of. May the auspicious occasion of Eid, bless you with peace and bring joy to your heart and home. Eid Mubarak!

THE MILLION DOLLAR MERMAID FOR SPRING/SUMMER 2018, BRITISH LUXURY SHOE AND ACCESSORIES BRAND CHARLOTTE OLYMPIA DIVES INTO THE MAGIC AND NOSTALGIA OF ROMANTIC MUSICAL ‘MILLION DOLLAR MERMAID’ AND TRANSLATES IT INTO A COLLECTION UNDERPINNED BY CLEAN AND FEMININE SILHOUETTES.

Spanning ‘Venus’ poolside sliders and terry cloth mules, as well as wedge sandals and pastel platform courts for shoes, the splendour of the art of synchronised swimming and the golden age of the “aqua musical” is portrayed: leopard print swimming pool tile embellishments, shimmering ‘Marine’ starfish applique, silk satin double knot details and pearlescent caviar Swarovski beading. Ornate seahorse sculpted wedge platforms make a splash with pearl embellishment and ruched organza uppers. Clutch bags are Perspex and explore the playful use of liquid-filled centres for cocktail drink clutches and a mid-century swimming pool design complete with miniature swimmers as accessories. As they say, “Come on in… the water’s fine”. Available at Fifty One East, Qatar’s favourite department store. 44

QUICK MATHS TONY WARD’S COUTURE SPRING SUMMER 2018 FRAC/TALS

A never-ending pattern is at the origin of Tony Ward’s inspiration

for this Spring Summer 2018 Couture collection: Fractals. This chaotic pattern is everywhere around us; they are found on trees, rivers, clouds, seashells... Fractals’ shapes are intriguing and infinitely complex; they originate from chaotic mathematical equations and are driven by recursion. Following the same chaos, these patterns are replicated on the dresses; each repetition creating random, unique and beautiful outlines that are still very similar to the initial shape, yet presenting a multitude of infinitesimal differences. For this Spring Summer 2018 Couture collection, these consistent yet random and complex patterns are handcrafted on dresses made of lace, organza, embroidered tulle and laser-cut satin. The colour palette is all about rose, lilac, light green, ‘greige’ and cream; giving a light and delicate summery feel to the collection while softening the otherwise intricate details of the embroideries. The patterns on the garments, along with the juxtaposition of strong and soft volumes, add a touch of unusual and offset beauty to the collection. @tonywardcouture #TonyWard #TWgoesFracTals Available at Fifty One East, Qatar’s favourite department store.

BEAT THE HEAT As the temperatures start to rise, Angela Beitz explains how to keep your beauty regime in check this summer

I

t’s scorching out there! The summer months are suddenly upon us and has brought with it a wave of sticky skin, dry hair and a parched face. Make-up is starting to melt off and you just can’t seem to keep up with the H20. We are all well aware of how attractive tanned skin is but the hard truth is that spending time out in the sun can be very harmful, so it’s best to look after your hair, skin and face. Here’s how...

SLATHER ON THE SUNSCREEN

Using a high SPF factor is crucial here in The Gulf. SPF doesn’t refer to the strength of your protection it refers to the time. So, if you’re using SPF 10, you will get 10 times the amount of time in the sun it would usually take for you to burn. If you use SPF 40, you will get 40 times. If you are sweating a lot or doing a lot of swimming, you need to constantly reapply. SPF 30 should be used at an absolute minimum and I would strongly recommend SPF 50 and even SPF 100 if you are very fair and it’s great to use on your face. Remember: SPF is the cheapest and most effective anti-ageing product on the market! 64

www.ohlala-magazine.com

CHANGE UP YOUR BEAUTY PRODUCTS

Sunscreen and beauty products have come a long way over the years and it’s great to see a lot of foundations along with CC & BB creams that now have SPF. In saying this, these products aren’t high enough in SPF for a day outside or by the beach or pool. Save them for office days when you won’t be outside in the sun as they don’t have the same long-lasting effects that sunscreen does. Opt for a lighter foundation with a loose setting powder and in these months - less is more! Keep it simple.

COOL DOWN WITH A MIST

Stash a bottle of face mist in your handbag so that you can mist your face and body when you’re at work or at the beach. your skin will thank you for it. There are loads of inexpensive options on the market packed with antioxidants and nutrients that will soothe and hydrate skin on top of cooling you down. They are also a great product to use here year-round to hydrate your skin from the dehydrating A/C and harsh environment.

REPAIR THE DAMAGE

If the worst should happen and you do get sunburnt you need to get as many antioxidants into your skin as quickly as possible. Products with Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Aloe Vera, Green Tea will help to stop the free radicals that have harmed your skin and help to prevent premature ageing. Avoid any more contact with the sun after you have been burnt and ensure you wear shirts that cover your shoulders and chest.

FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT

The best thing you can do is to stay out of the sun and save yourself the drama and get a spray-tan. The nice bronze, glowy type that looks natural or buy a good home-tanning product from Sephora or the pharmacy that has hydrating properties and is good for your skin also. This will save your skin the damage while still looking healthy and tanned.

BEAUTY Insight antioxidants, Vitamin C & E, hyaluronic acid, Placenta, stem cells, retinol, azelaic acid and AHA’s. To Protect, with the use of antioxidants as well as a good SPF. However, beautiful skin is a result of lifestyle too. Living well, eating well, sleeping, exercising and knowing how to deal with stress are all important factors. Why is sleep imperative for beautiful skin? When we sleep our skin cells rejuvenate and remove toxins from the body. If you do not have enough hours of sleep per night to replenish and reboot, the skin often suffers by looking both lackluster and sallow. As the founder of award-winning skincare line, MZ SKIN tell us about the collection and why it is unique in the market? MZ SKIN is a concise and precise capsule collection of intelligently formulated ingredients designed to reveal, enhance and protect the skin in a simple yet exquisite regimen. My range is made by a woman for women so, it has a luxurious feel. It is free of all nasty’s like parabens and silicones and is made with the finest ingredients, with formulations designed to increase the penetration and efficacy of the ingredients that are dermatologically tested. Tell us about the latest product launch, Depuff & Define Contouring Eye Rescue and why it is causing such a stir? This delicious new product helps to do exactly what it says on the bottle. It de-puff ’s and defines the contour of the lower eyelid by helping to eliminate toxins. It is filled with caffeine, silicium and alginic acid to improve lymphatic circulation and lighten the dark circles around the eyes. Silicum also functions to reduce the glycation of proteins and helps re-structure the skin. A high molecular weight Hyaluronic Acid is added to increase hydration levels, and tangerine peel extract promotes an even skin tone.

SMART BEAUTY

Oculoplastic Surgeon and founder of MZ Skin Dr. Maryam Zamani believes that “a beautiful complexion starts with a consistent, daily skincare routine – less is more. “ Angela Beitz discusses her pioneering skincare philosophy and her groundbreaking beauty products

W

hat is your beauty philosophy when it comes to Anti-aging? The real secret is to reveal, enhance and protect the skin. To Reveal, I would recommend the use of an AHA cleanser to gently exfoliate the skin like my MZ SKIN Cleanse & Clarify Dual Action AHA Cleanser & Mask. To Enhance, look for ingredients including 66

BEAUTY Insight With Patches and masks being this years’ hottest beauty trend, explain why your gold eye masks are fast becoming a Net-a-Porter favourite? The Hydra Bright Golden Eye Treatment Masks are a favourite at Net-A-Porter already! That is simply because they instantly provide hydration while soothing the skin around the eye contour to help brighten tired eyes. Easy to use, in just ten minutes the visible results speak for themselves. Perfect as pre-party prep before a night out or equally as an instant pick-me-up for the day after the night before! You are the go-to Oculoplastic Surgeon and have many Middle Eastern clients who travel to see you in London. Alongside surgery, what non invasive treatments are popular? Injectables used for facial contouring are hugely popular. From hand rejuvenation to the nonsurgical Rhinoplasty, to chin, cheek, lip and even earlobe augmentation as results are immediate. I would say that next it would be my skin treatments, including Ultherapy, PRP, Skinpen & Mesotherapy as well as lasers, that work to improve the overall skin tone and texture.

Easy to use, in

just ten minutes the visible results speak for themselves. With the rise of the ‘tweakment’ explain why your ‘less is more’ artful approach to antiaging treatments provides the best and most natural-looking results? My philosophy has always been, less is more. You can always add but it is often much more difficult to take away. The goal is to look refreshed rather than different. I see a growing trend to look well, not different or done. Do you have something in the pipeline that you want to share regarding MZ SKIN? Lots in the pipeline, but I will be coming out with a facial roller, at-home LED as well as a new night mask all this year! Exciting times ahead and I cannot wait to share them with you! www.mzskin.com 68

#YOUKNOWMEANDYOUDONT For the launch of N°5 L’EAU ALL-OVER SPRAY and N°5 L’EAU ON HAND CREAM, CHANEL is writing a new chapter in the YOU KNOW ME AND YOU DON’T digital campaign with a film portraying a dance of paradoxical movements.

W

e all have our own preference of where we place fragrance for it to elongate the sensory pleasure and N°5 is celebrating this notion showcasing these new ways to wear fragrance, N°5 is always in motion, featuring a different gesture, sensation and intensity with each product. Directed by the talented Jacob Sutton and orchestrated by choreographer Dimitri Chamblas, the film presents each shot like a photograph, keeping the movement alive by capturing it in the moment. It portrays a “dual” woman who expresses her different moods through a cathartic dance: a sensual and powerful dance to represent the cream, versus a light and airy dance to represent the mist. The tension gradually builds until the final moment when the two women become one and the same person, two facets of one personality. The split-screen film initiates a mirrored dialogue with brief encounters between the two scenes, asserting the complementary duality of the products. The movements are driven by different rhythms, alternating from one screen to the other. Creating a sensorial composition in harmony with the movement, they establish a sense of expectation, seduction, with an intensity that swells until it explodes with a free, exuberant energy. CHANEL is extending this approach to the digital environment with a new interactive experience: which gesture will you choose? Users are invited to become active participants in the N°5 L’EAU sensorial experience by drawing their own movements on the screen or trackpad. In response, the dancer interprets the movements with 15 different gestures to discover. The film is available to watch on chanel.com 70

HEALTH Files

E

lectrical muscle stimulation (EMS) training has hit the fitness industry by storm. With the availability of many brands for EMS machines in the market, gyms in Qatar seem to be investing in this type of training. So, what is this new popular phenomenon of being hooked up to electrodes and having small electric pulses going into your muscles? Is it safe? And should you give it a go?

SHE’S ELECTRIC DIVA LOUNGE SPA is an independent, boutique day spa that caters to the wellness needs of professional women in Qatar. Ohlala talks frankly with their recently joined fitness instructor NERINE WORSLEY about Personal20 EMS training and why we can all benefit from it. 74

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Tell us a bit about yourself, Nesrine. This may sound cliche but I am extremely passionate about the health and fitness industry. I host a variety of accolades that vary from being a qualified personal trainer to a dance instructor. My degree is in Human Movement and I am EMS certified, therefore, I’m extremely motivated to utilise my skills and knowledge to enhance the lives of our clientele here in Qatar. Nerine, what is Personal20 EMS Training? Personal20 EMS training is great from a personal training perspective. Personal20 is based on the Efit 1280 patent technology which is the only machine approved by the FDA. Efit 1280 is the only brand of EMS training that works with the Impulse Shift Technology (IST) that prevents diagonal electric current through the organs and reduces the amount of current delivered to the body. Efit has 22 electrodes more than other brands, it has a separate electrode for biceps and triceps which makes exercise more natural In general EMS training is based It is based on high intensity, short duration principles and the electric component means the intensity of the muscle contractions is higher than any normal training. It is a safe and effective way to tone your body, increase your strength and mobility, and ultimately become a healthier person. A few minutes warm-up, a strength protocol, a core workout and a relaxation time fit in to the 20 minutes. I believe Personal 20 EMS training to be one of the “ways forward” in the fitness industry as it is effective and convenient. Why has EMS training become so popular? EMS training is not really a new concept. It has been used by many athletes for years. However, recently it has gained popularity due to the busy work life professionals lead. EMS training is convenient as it can be done in 20 minutes whilst your muscles do a workout that is equivalent to an hour at the gym. So, it is an option for those who don’t have time for exercise. How does Personal20 Work? Personal20 EMS training is performed by placing small electrodes on different parts of the body. Small electrical impulses are then sent to the muscles contracting them. These impulses reach deep muscle layers, which are harder to activate through normal training. The effect of the impulses causes the muscles to work 90% harder than they would in a conventional training session. What should one expect on their first session: The session starts with a comprehensive body analysis to determine how many sessions a client needs based on their body shape, weight and composition. A client is given a cotton top and legging to wear, then a bodysuit with wet pads to facilitate the flow of the electric current is fitted. The session then starts by allowing the electric current to pass to

EMS session. When would a client expect to see results? As with any other work out, the body takes time to respond. This greatly depends on the lifestyle of the client. However, with EMS training it is expected that after 8 sessions a client would see results. In addition to muscle shaping and toning, a client would see physical change, and if she is on a healthy diet she will lose weight as well. Rest assured that any training session with me will be in a quiet, private training room, without the public exposure of going to a large gym which will also enhance your focus. And… you could always follow your training session with a relaxing massage! Visit Diva Lounge Spa Royal Plaza Branch for a trial session. different parts of the body. The beauty in that training is that you can control the percentage of the electric impulses to the part of the body you want to focus on. So, if you want to strengthen and shape your legs then the electric impulses can be increased to that part only. The electric impulses can be increased or decreased depending on the client’s tolerance. The session usually includes a warm up, followed by lunges, squats, sit ups, planks, shoulder presses and finally a cool down. Is Personal20 EMS training safe? Personal20 EMS training is safe. The basis of Electro Muscle Stimulation is exactly what happens in our daily movements. Naturally, our bodies use electrical stimulation to activate our muscles. In the Personal20 workouts this stimulation of the muscles is simply initiated and maintained by the machine. However, this type of training is not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, nor those who suffer from heart disease, pacemakers, or other implanted electrical devices. What are the benefits of Personal20? Personal20 has many benefits. The fact that it is a complete body workout in just 20 minutes provides convenience to many people who are unable to spend time working out. Personal20 is easy on the joints so it is suitable for elderly people as it stimulates their muscles. It can help in relieving back pain, improves blood circulation, treats cellulite and increases metabolism hence it helps in weight loss. How many sessions per week is recommended? Because of the intensity of the EMS workout a maximum of 2 sessions per week is required. No other form of exercise should be done on the day of the 76

SKIN DEEP SU-MAN HSU was hosted by THE RITZCARLTON, DOHA SPA where she enthusiastically talked to JAYNE GREEN about her legendary ‘five star’ signature facial and why she is one of the most well-known celebrity facialists.

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Tell us how you first delved into the world of skincare? To be honest I was so unhappy with the products I was using for my facials. They were too heavy and not effective. So I decided to create my own. I wanted products that replicated my professional treatment and would work with simple application techniques. The formulas started at home in my kitchen. I tested them on my countless clients and they were thrilled by the results. I then sent them to two labs in France and Taiwan to refine them. This is how Su-Man skincare was born. I like to think that what you get with my skincare is “the wisdom of ten thousand faces”. That’s at least how many people I’ve treated! What are the most common skin issues that you see? Pigmentation, dark circle under the eyes and dealing with spots are the most common issue I noticed. You launched your products back in December 2013, have your ingredients and formulas remained the same? Yes Your products have won various awards, what’s the most memorable moment in your career? Apart from launching my skincare range and be the first skincare brand that won the Five Star Diamond Award from America, the most memorable moment in my career was being the rehearsal director for Akram Khan for the London Olympics opening ceremony in 2012. I had to make sure the 50 dancers I worked with were perfect in this once in a lifetime moment. That evening when I could feel 80,000 people move to silence I’ve felt so proud and full of joy. It’s a tremendous gift to give to the world and I felt honoured to be part of it. You mix Eastern & Western techniques, what are the elements you take from each? The concept of ‘prevention’ is a very eastern approach to skincare. Asian women are encouraged to care for their skin from a young age, in order to preserve its youth. Massage application is also widely used in Asian skincare, aiming to achieve a healthy, energised and beautiful skin. Massage also allows you to get the most out of your products, helps reducing pores and improves circulation. The ‘correction’ element of the skincare philosophy comes from the west. Western women love the ‘wow factor’ and are always looking for hero products to add to their regime. With this in mind I created my Velvet Skin Brightening Serum - it nourishes your skin from the first use, leaving it velvety soft whilst ensuring the long term improvement of your skin. Both my massage technique and skincare range are inspired by the two cultures that I’ve belonged to for most of my life. It is a marriage of homegrown Asian beauty secrets and cutting edge science. Do you ever feel under pressure being referenced as a Celebrity Facialist? I don’t know if it’s the pressure from the name or just my insecurity because I constantly have the doubt of my abilities. Even if I have touched over ten thousand faces, each time I have that fear of not being able to deliver the result, not being able to perform my best or not being able to connect with that person. It’s a constant challenge for me. What is your opinion on botox and fillers? I am not a fan of those quick fixes but I am not against them either. If done properly you do get that instant younger looking result. The trouble is that people don’t know when to stop so you often see people gone past the tipping point of cosmetics work - either frozen or pillow like which make a person look artificial and robotic. The good news is that my facial method actually compliments those procedure because it activates the muscles, releases tension on the face, improves blood flow and reduces over-stressed skin. In other words, it brings life back to your face. This is not a theory but a fact from having

worked with over ten thousands faces. How does the Middle East differ in regards to customer demand for products and treatments? From my experience, Middle East women are more advanced and dare to try something new, weather a product or treatment. They certainly know what they want but still keep an open mind. The disadvantage is that they don’t necessarily become regulars, compared to customers from other cultures. Have you got any skincare tips that we can incorporate into our daily beauty regime? Yes, you can see full details of my step by step massage technique on my website www.su-man.com. There is a simple 2 minutes mini facial video which, if you do every day, will improve your skin texture considerably. The idea of massage is that by draining lymph fluid, increasing blood circulation and energising the face muscles, the “scaffolding” of your skin becomes stronger. It also reduces stagnation, suffocation and tension. End result - energised , healthy and beautiful skin that stays that way. Tell us an interesting fact about yourself. Well, I was supposed to be given away to my childless neighbour when I was born but they rejected me and told my mother that I was too skinny and a little too dark as a Chinese. And look at me now - I’m doing things that make people look beautiful and young.

Whether you are hankering for a relaxing meal indoors or indeed longing to dine alfresco, then find your way to lebanese restaurant at Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels by Tivoli’s AL TERRACE where you can unwind on their spacious veranda.

I

find this is the best time of year to spend time at the Souq with Ramadan and Eid but the Souq is truly alive throughout the whole year with a bazaar of secrets and a maze of undiscovered treasures. To know the souq expertly is an almost unfulfilled aspiration. But, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try! I often used to come off the corniche and approach the souq never quite knowing where it started and ended. For a long time I would never get into it too deeply. Upon one such visit I found myself being allured by the Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels and I discovered one of their amazing restaurants - a real treasure. The Souq Waqif Boutique Hotel has nine separate properties and on the steps of the Al Murqab boutique is the Lebanese themed, Al Terrace restaurant. It’s abundantly obvious why it bears that name. The steps up to the hotel’s entrance forms a terrace which diners can sit on and look out on a small but beautiful enclave of the souq that is slightly hidden away but acts as a thoroughfare for passers by. It’s excellent for people watching but it’s also delightfully tranquil too. There is sometimes some live music going on as you look out from the terrace but the outlook is never boring. In fact you don’t even have to sit on the terrace as a cute array of tables and chairs with a pop of colour scatter cushions bedecks the cobbled ground in front of the hotel on the street so that you can really enjoy the food al fresco. Aside from the delightful decor, the food is of a high standard.

There is a preponderance towards quality over quantity. From a hummus that’s a velvety puree of freshly boiled chickpeas and tahini sauce to a strong offer of cold mezze dishes, there is a early sign that you are eating very good food. The tabouleh was tangy, the fattoush fresh, the babaganoush brilliant, the muhammara marvellous. All as they should be. The hot mezze also gets a thumbs up. The cheese and spinach fatayer are tasty and unlike some that I’ve eaten lately, it did not taste as if it had sat around for a long time and been reheated. The pièce de résistance is the mixed grill and it’s a mountain for one but great for sharing. It’s a combination of lamb kebab, lamb kofta, lamb chops, shish taouk, arayees, eggplant and onion with sumac. The chef chargrills it and lightly spices the meat with herbs. The mixed grill is physically served on the grill still simmering away and oozes in flavour. I’ve had heartier mixed grills but rarely a tastier or more succulent one. The mixed grill is not a must especially if you are alone or just want different things to others. I confess to previously trying the shish taouk on a previous visit and loving that. You can also try meat dishes like the lamb chops just on their own. One thing that cannot go unmentioned are the prawns. I did not go thinking I would even be eating them that evening but what a revelation they are! The king prawns mashwi are decently sized king prawns that are chargrilled with garlic and lemon juice. Now, this is an absolute must! The desserts are also excellent - I admonish you to try delve into such beautifully curated delicacies. They seem healthy and not too overpowering. The recipes are pretty simple or at least that is what the chef told us without revealing the magic recipe! The umm ali is reliable, but, my favourite was the ashta bil asal which essentially is Lebanese fresh cream with honey and pistachios. The setting is gentle and relaxed whilst also being classy and elegant. The staff are attentive, friendly, knowledgeable, but, not in your face or pushy to upsell additional extras. There are many reasons to visit whether to spend the evening gorging on delicious food, for a light lunch or even to get coffee with friends. Their milkshakes were pretty special as I discovered. It’s hard to know where to start (or indeed stop) when you dive into the souq but this is not a bad place to start or to even take a pit stop on your meanderings around this traditional setting. LUXURY REDEFINED For a true Parisian hotel experience, you simply can’t go past Four Seasons Hotel George V. With its impeccably chic clientele, friendly service and outstanding restaurants, George V brings an old-world feel to The City of Lights. Angela Beitz checks in. Originally opened in 1928 in honour of George V, the hotel was changed

to a Four Seasons in 1999. A small walk away from the Champs Élysées in the eighth arrondissement and a ten minute walk from The Eiffel Tower, this hotel is in the perfect spot and you’ll have everything quite literally on your doorstep. We arrive at the stunning property and are promptly greeted and showed inside to the lobby. The lobby is simply breathtaking and it would be wrong to write this article and to not mention the flowers at this beautiful hotel. You smell them before you see them. The hotel is known for its phenomenal floral displays. Celebrity Florist Jeff Leatham is the man behind these stunning creations and has been working his craft at the Four Seasons in Paris for 16 years, where he works with a million-dollar budget to create these arrangements that are works of art. The arrangements are large and vast and follow a theme (based on seasonal flowers) that are updated every three to four weeks. On our particular visit they were the most vibrant fuchsia orchids displayed in a waterfall shape accented with Spring foliage and green buds. Offering 244 Paris luxury hotel guest rooms and suites, the rooms, many of which feature private terraces overlooking the city - sparkle with unique architectural details. In the eight-storey landmark 1928 building, you’ll revel in unique design details, luxurious features and unique Parisian views just off the Champs-Elysées. The rooms are simply beautiful and have a feel of days gone by with replica period furniture, chaises longues and extra-large closets to take care of all your shopping from the high end boutiques nearby. The look is completed by rich drapes and reproductions of Renaissance art. The marbled bathrooms are large and decadent whilst the duck egg blue and and cream colour scheme will instantly make you feel grand. We were greeted with a beautiful arrangement of fruit and chocolate with an amazing edible chocolate replica of The Eiffel Tower with macarons at the base. Perfection. With three presidential suites and two royal suites each boasting a lounge, an office, a dining room and a kitchen area, primed for business meetings or indeed entire families, George V certainly has a very high end clientele - a lot of them repeat guests. Paris is known for its gastronomic delights so it’s no surprise that the hotel boasts some of the best restaurants in the city. Not only does the Four Seasons George V have one of the city’s best wine cellars but it is the only luxury hotel in Europe with three Michelin-starred restaurants (for a total of five stars). Le Cinq has three Michelin stars and the menu draws upon classic French culinary techniques and also embraces newer, lighter cooking styles, always using the freshest regional ingredients. Le George has one

It’s elegant gourmet fare is perfect for special occasions and on the day that we visited the restaurant it was full of a chic yet lively crowd. The convivial, gastronomic experience takes guests on a journey between the French Riviera and northern Italy. L’Orangerie has one Michelin star and is an extension of La Galerie the hotel’s third signature gastronomical restaurant. Chef David Bizet’s menu exemplifies the traditional French contemporary cuisine “of elegance, refinement, femininity and respect for nature. The service in these restaurants must also be noted as the staff are impeccably well mannered. Their professionalism is exemplary and testimony to their vast expertise in there retrospective fields. This month, Four Seasons George V is planning to unveil a brand new spa and we were lucky enough to have a sneak peek. All has not been revealed yet but we can tell you it was one of the most incredible spa spaces we’ve ever been in and they’ve signed on some amazing therapists and spa brands. It’s sure to be as impressive as the rest of the hotel. In the meantime, the hotel has opened a Jeff Leatham designed pop-up spa on the fourth floor where we enjoyed an incredible massage using Argan oil for our dry skin, which was the perfect pick-me-up after our long flight. www.fourseasons.com/paris www.ohlala-magazine.com

MISS Ohlala

G IRL P OWER Miss Ohlala explores today’s usage of the word ‘empowerment’ and why not everything is as it seems.

We’ve all been there, unifying ourselves as one with the embellished use of ‘girl power’, may it be in the workplace, at home or indeed anywhere for that matter and such acts should be celebrated and nurtured - shouldn’t they? Since the late 90s and early 00s, consumerism masked as ‘girl power’ i.e. watered-down, novel feminism, has been used to sell stuff to young women and women alike in the name of women’s rights. Unfortunately buying sporty silk tracksuit pants won’t make you empowered, but more-so the bank. This, ironically, is doing the opposite. Weight Watchers and Spanx have been tapping into the inner-feminist of many modern girls by assuring their products will unleash a dose of empowerment and ‘sticking it to the man’. Of course, the ideals of both an expensive diet and slimming underwear feed the male gaze, all while making megabucks. Some would rightly argue that sucking your podgy belly in with Lycra and ordering a pack of gluten-free ready meals on Amazon is not, in fact, empowering; it’s consumerism with a quite translucent mask on no detoxifying properties here! All of this hoo-hah about “reclaiming” and “accepting” areas of our bodies/lives is ingrained in a very important conversation that needs to 98

www.ohlala-magazine.com

be had. But not in regards to empowerment. If you’re growing out your armpit hair/snail trail/miscellaneous zones, then good for you! We’re all very genuinely proud you have the ability to rise above unrelenting social norms and kick the razor. But, if you’re uttering “I’m reclaiming my fuzz once and for all!” well, you don’t need to be empowered. Because, if one of your priorities is sending your BFF a snapchat of your newly organic pits, you most likely aren’t reclaiming anything but a boost in self-confidence and friendship personal points. Celebrating female body hair and other feminist acts is amazing and positive and I’m glad you’re doing so, but look a little deeper. Girls and women and indeed other sidelined members of society that actually need to reclaim their bodies, sexualities and power genuinely need empowerment to be equal members of society. Take young women and prepubescent girls in areas such as Nigeria and South Africa who are victims of breast ironing. Methods of breast ironing include the use of hot stones, hammers or even heated spatulas in order to disfigure developing chests. It’s a shocking reality many girls as young as eight or nine are experiencing, and mothers - although under the impression they are doing something positive - are the biggest perpetrators. They’re some of those who really need those empowering hashtag and body ownership campaigns. The repeated abuse of middle class, well-to-do people “reclaiming” their healthy, happy bodies acts like a watering can on critical work that needs to be done to give the most marginalised people on the planet more visibility. So, let us dig a little deeper, open our hearts AND eyes to the reality of what empowerment truly is and be distinctively selfless.
