EDITOR’S LETTER Everyone expresses themselves through colour. From the moment we pick out our clothes in the morning, to the shade of lipstick or manicure that we decide on, to the time we put on our pyjamas at night, colour factors into how we convey emotion, identity and meaning. SS18 has been witness to a flourish of rainbow colours, the coveted yummy pastels and some pretty powerful 80s power dressing. Not to forget the OTT texture and fringing that has dominated this seasons catwalk. Designers definitely raided the Pantone colour chart for the explosion of primary colours and we are all for the uplifting style at Ohlala Headquarters. Fear not if you shy away from such bold colours as you can take a more subtle stance embellishing a pastel shade or accessory to ease you into this season. Cascade your eyes over our Style Focus pages for some inspiration to your wardrobe. After all, it’ll be Summer before we know it and, yes, we are already trialling the best hair serums in preparation of the humidity. Don’t worry, we’ve got you! Never a one to turn on their heels, especially when it comes to an exclusive we have secured an interview with the brainchild of Amato Couture, Furne One, alongside unleashing his new lookbook Amato Luxe Spring/Summer Collection onto the world, which we just know that you’re going to love. Remember...all things bright and beautiful!

SPRING AWAKENING The Best of Seasons! JKF Indulgence aids the discovery of your identity through fashion.

STYLE
S
pring is just about everyone’s favourite season. It’s a season of joy and happiness! For youth to be mischievous and actively exploring life, for adults to be protecting their young and planning for the promises ahead. For God’s nature to explode into new life. Spring commences when the earth’s hemisphere tilts closer to the sun which increases the daily temperatures heading into summer. This is sometimes accompanied by increased rainfall, which waters the seeds in the ground to take root and sprout, ignite the coloured blooms, and give fresh green leaves that brighten our world. It is a beautiful season, slightly cool and comfortable with an outdoor nature that suits all. We welcome these days of colorfulness from March through to May – this is the icebreaker; from winter into summer season, when everything on the earth looks adorable and charming. Nature gets new clothing with new leaves, flowers bloom their fragrance, insects are reborn, birds sing on deep blue skies, brooks flow and the grass is always greener. It’s a celebration of colour. Brand new colours in brand new prints and patterns. Freedom of choice everywhere. It’s when fashion mishaps can become the next big thing. And you could just be the very first to wear it, to post it, to own it. So if he comes home without flowers, as was supposed to, it’s not because of their shortage. You may need to remind him that this is the season of early blooms, and of festivals we fill with joy and happiness. It’s the most appropriate season to show some love. So rise with a hopeful heart, and enjoy the early morning sun with birds singing their happy song, and the lingering beautiful butterflies. Start your days with this season’s displays, whether they’re outside your window, or on the fabrics you wear. Springtime is when you get your gorgeous self out of winter hibernation and into the breezy, easy-to-wear fabulous styles of the new season. All so colourful, floral and freshly patterned. The light being enough to accept the warmth of summer as it creeps upon us. As the new spring style flourishes the streets, always remember it all starts with our self-awareness. What’s your body shape and what colours work for you, and what patterns suit your body size? So regardless of the cotton poplins, the layering, street style or chic classic, it’s always about what works for you! Fabulously you.

LE SILLA
To materialise an idea of seduction, to make the image of a woman real and full of femininity.
The source of inspiration for Enio Silla, who has always been the Le Silla designer, is to materialise an idea of seduction, to make the image of a woman real and full of femininity. When Enio arrives in the office, he finds again the creative chaos from which an shocking idea will get life from. Often this idea needs the designer brilliance mixed with the artisan skill to be transformed in a creation to live. Creative Director of the brand, Monica Ciabattini shaped the Company’s image thanks to her surprising aesthetic nature, determining the orientation of the brand and giving the outlines for the collections, advertising campaigns and design of flagship stores LeSilla Villaggio is the second standalone boutique in Doha accessible via Gate 6 of Villagio Mall. Bringing the latest of Italian footwear to you, LeSilla caters to everyday needs as well as occasional wear in women footwear. The brand was founded by Enio Silla in 1994 who has now built a company that stands out for its details and style since the very beginning. The dedication focused on initially expanding their retail network in Italy, Milan and Florence whilst also expanding abroad by opening corner shops and flagships, from Moscow to Dubai throughout Kuwait City, Almaty and Bucharest. The trend of growth proved very satisfying, allowing LeSilla to realise the new headquarter with a brand restyling. LeSilla believes that a great opera is played by a large orchestra, boys and girls who have become men and women of talent. Personality and sacrifice have made themselves instruments for this wonderful concert. lesilla.com For more information, please call (+974) 44930292 www.ohlala-magazine.com

CHANEL also presented the “CODE COCO” watch inspired by the clasp of the quilted 2.55 bag, created by Mademoiselle Chanel in February 1955, whose clasp adorns the heart of the watch’s dial. A tribute to a story, style and look, the CODE COCO watch carries the ever-renewing codes of CHANEL. CHANEL also presented the Camélia watch from Les Éternelles de CHANEL collection, the Premiére Boy Arty Diamonds watch and the Brins de Printemps chapter from Les Blés de CHANEL collection. www.51east.com/qa @51_east www.ohlala-magazine.com

Hedonistic Horology Peter Harrison, CEO of Richard Mille Europe, Middle East and Africa tells us why watches are indeed timeless pieces. What are your current plans for the Middle East, specifically Qatar? To be honest with you I would say that Qatar is one of our best supported markets in the region, if not the world. The Qatar market has got behind the brand since the very beginning and our friends at Ali bin Ali have been really supportive. They really understand the brand as well as the watches and I think it’s a market that appreciates that we’re not a brand that is restricted by 100 years of history. They look at what we are doing because it’s interesting and fresh as opposed to other brands that have one hundred years of history behind them which can mean that they are unable to take a fresh approach and are restricted in their development. How does the Middle East compare to other places in the world? As a brand we’re pretty evenly spread. My part of the company takes care as the partner of Richard Mille in Europe, Middle East and Africa. There’s another part which is in Asia and another part which is North, South America and the Caribbean. I think to be fair my region and Asia’s a little bit more than the other ones, but, that’s because we have got a lot faster ahead with women’s watches for example. We are a lot further ahead than other places in the world which is particularly interesting. The Middle East has a real passion for high-end design. Who do you feel is your target audience? We aren’t a brand that sets out for a particular age range or a price bracket. We’ll look at how we can set a new material with diamonds, for example, in the case of a ladies watch, then, maybe I will say ok that’s interesting and the aesthetic is very beautiful. I mean what’s interesting about this topic is I think that our average age is getting younger every year as people don’t necessarily want a piece of jewellery that belonged to their parents from when they were 21. They want something which is more personal and indicative of their personality to reflect the way that the world is changing. People will say I want to buy a Richard Mille
as it reflects me and my success as an individual. How did you get involved with Richard Mille? Richard and I have been friends for about 25 years and we were both in a very similar industry. He said he really wanted to do his own watch brand I told him he was mad and that he shouldn’t do it. Once he’d went off and done it I told him that I truly think he has something amazing - it accelerated from there. Richard Mille is something I’m extremely passionate about. When we first met back in 2006 we have always been very frank with one another and we found that we had a lot of common, outside of the watch industry and business. We pride ourselves on how open we are with each other and I think that’s one of the reasons why we work so well together. How would you describe the women who wear such craftsmanship? There’s a certain level of discovery when people shop now and there is less impulsive buys. Our global clients look into particular stores to see what collections that they can uncover, where they haven’t been able to in the likes of Hong Kong or Milan. Staff are trained to make everyone feel at home and you never know who the

woman walking through the door in jeans and sneakers - at the end of the day, they are our clients and they are not necessarily going to be standing at the door dripping with jewellery with their driver waiting outside in a Rolls Royce. I met a woman a couple of years ago at our Geneva trade fair and she came and bought a few watches from our collection. After sitting down for a coffee with her she revealed that she’d just returned from the couture shows in Paris and the reason she buys couture is not only because the way it fits but the reassurance that when she walks into a room of 200 to 300 people that she wasn’t going to be standing next to someone with the same or indeed similar dress. This is how she feels about Richard Mille watches as she knows pretty well that she isn’t going to bump into anyone wearing the same as opposed to a brand that is circulated widely. We love that our clients actually wear our watches and don’t hide them away in a safe never to see the light of day. @richardmilleofficial

HIGH IMPACT
A new season is the perfect excuse to shake up your beauty look and try something fresh. SS18 beauty and make-up trends all pack a real punch so its time to get on board and standout from the crowd. Angela Beitz explains JOIN THE GLITTERATI
If there is one major trend that truly dominated for all four fashion weeks, it was all things that sparkle, shimmer and glow. Full on glittery eyelids were on show along with stick-on gems, tiny sequins, jewels and even rhinestones. If this is all a bit much for you but you’d still like to dip your toe in the glitter trend then I’d recommend the new glitter highlighters from brands such as Cover FX which will give you a gorgeous glow without being too over the top. For the rest of you that are game to try this trend go ahead and unleash the inner child in you.
HAIR ACCESSORY REVIVAL
One of our favourite trends for this season was the return of glamorous hair accessories. They were huge on the catwalks for SS18, with everything from logo scarves wrapped around ponytails at Lanvin to Sixties-style headbands at Miu Miu and there were even prim and proper hair clips worn above each ear, school style. Gucci’s bow headband is on our musthave list along with D&G’s embellished numbers.
SHORT AND SWEET
Been considering a chop? Well now is the time. Moschino and Giorgio Armani created faux crops with some clever clipping and pinning and short styles were more popular on the catwalk than ever. The casting of short-haired models were used to really create an impact that short is back and this androgynous style is sure to be seen everywhere this season.
THE NEW RED LIP
Red lips never go out of style but this season they’ve taken on a fresh new approach with modern applications and fresh finishes. Matte geranium coloured mouths with soft edges are what to go for with a slick of gloss over the top.
THE GRAPHIC CAT EYE
While cat eye eyeliner is normally reserved for AW, it was a super strong trend across most shows including bold graphic looks, exaggerated blue flicks and feline flicks. Lanvin really stole the show with graphic shapes on the outer eyes.
NAIL ART IS BACK
Hair and make-up often take the focus backstage, but nail art was back in full force for the new season. There were logo manicures, crystal embellishments and ombre glitter talons at Tom Ford. This is definitely one of the more time consuming trends to get on board with but certainly one of the most fun. 66

NO MORE CONTOURING
I personally could not be happier to see this ridiculous, Kardashian led trend leave with its tail between its legs. Make-up artists gave it the boot and instead opted for blush applied to the apples of the cheeks. Softly blushed beauties were seen walking the catwalk at Simone Rocha while Pat McGrath introduces classic blush draping at Valentino in shimmering pink while over at Chanel a bold red hue was used.
HELLO BRIGHT EYES
It wouldn’t be summer without something bright and electro-pop eye make-up in orange, pink and blue will be seen everywhere this season. Look for highly-pigmented pastels in blues, greens and fuchsia. The bolder, brighter and more eye-popping, the better.

CONNECTED BEAUTY Looking for skincare that gives results? MURAD skincare is founded on the simple truth that everything is connected. This distinctive point-of-view is an internal and external approach to health and beauty that inspires people to nourish their skin, awaken their body through physical activity, practice stress management and proper nutrition
M
urad was founded in 1989 by Dr. Howard Murad, a board-certified dermatologist, trained pharmacist and Associate Professor at the UCLA, Geffen School of Medicine. Murad offers people a path to youthful good health through science- based, clinically-proven skincare and healthcare products that have been developed as part of Dr. Murad’s Inclusive Health system of care. With a full range of skin-conditionspecific, high-performance products for home and spa, backed by 19 unique patents for advancing the science of skin health and a 30year legacy of research and clinical testing—millions of people look to Murad with confidence for products, services and tools to help them look, live and feel better every day. We sat down with Dr. Murad to discover his tips on achieving healthy, radiant skin.
1.
What I have discovered through my decades of research is that overtime there’s a reduction of water in our tissues – this is a common pathway to aging, disease and dehydration. As our cells lose their integrity, we become more vulnerable to different factors and we can say that life is simply a slow process of continual dehydration. There are several ways to stay hydrated, and with some of these tips your body and skin will thank you later.
70
www.ohlala-magazine.com
2.
While it’s important to drink your water, most people don’t realise that you can ‘Eat Your Water’ too. This is one of the four pillars in our Connected Beauty approach. At Murad we believe in a wholeperson approach to beauty and health, and that healthy skin is a direct reflection of how you live your life. By consuming water-rich fruits and vegetables, you are not only hydrating yourself from within but also receiving added nutrients from these foods.
3.
Cucumbers and grapefruits are two of my go-to ‘Eat your water’ foods! They have more than 95% water and contain nutritional benefits like antioxidants and vitamins.
4.
Stay cool emotionally. We can all set the temperature in a room to our liking, and from time to time, we need a temperature check on our own emotions. In today’s modern world, technology allows us to work and communicate from anywhere and anytime. There’s social media pressures. Commutes are getting longer and longer. Expectations have increased, etc. All these factors contribute to stress, which can have profound implications on our skin and health. When you’re stressed, you might experience sweaty palms and underarm perspiration, causing you to feel dehydrated. So, give yourself a break, talk to a friend, take a walk outside – these small adjustments each day will ultimately help with your overall well-being and happiness.

71
Skincare is healthcare. If we truly understood that we would see that everything we do is connected
5.
Stay hydrated by incorporating exercise into your everyday. Muscle contains 70% water – so minimise body fat and increase muscle by adding in your favorite exercises into your lifestyle is very important. Go up and down the stairs, hold a walking meeting at work or take an exercise with a friend! I personally love walking, it makes me and happy while building muscle at the same time.
6.
Always use an appropriate moisturizer to lock in hydration and protect your skin. In today’s modern world, we are dealing with environmental aggressors – such as UVA and UVB – that can cause visible signs of aging. To address environmental aggressors, Murad’s Environmental Shield line offers Essential-C Day Moisture Broad Spectrum SPF 30. This antioxidant-rich broad spectrum sunscreen shields and restores environmentally stressed skin, blocks UVA and UVB rays, improving the skin’s barrier function while maintaining optimal hydration. Phospholipids and panthenol, specifically found in the Essential-C Day moisturizer – increases and preserves hydration for healthier looking skin.

THE ‘ONE’ WHO STOLE OUR HEART! FURNE ONE has touched a chord with the region’s fashion elite with his Avant Garde label ‘Amato’ and continues to be humble in his approach to life. JAYNE GREEN sits down with Furne One and talks everything from style to his dog Duchess, and everything in between. 80

G
ood Morning Mr One! We’re firm favourites of Amato here at Ohlala Headquarters, with many a front cover being adorned with your eccentric and awe inspiring designs. Tell us about the process from when you initially think of a design to then allowing it to come to fruition? I find the entire creative process very fulfilling as it is exciting. From conceptualizing ideas and sketching the design, to the sewing and finishing, it still amazes me how a simple imagination can come to life. Being able to create a dress that people appreciate the most rewarding experience for any designer. Moreover, what matters is that you create something that speaks to your audience and make them see your vision. The beginning is always a good place to start... do you remember when you first became aware of fashion, or at least when “style” became something you gravitated towards? When I was a young boy I would watch my mother and grandmother get all dressed up. I would watch them put on makeup and fix their hair. I was fascinated with how their dresses, shoes and accessories transformed them into glamorous queens. Tell us about the recently launched SS18 collection Amato Luxe. Amato Luxe’s SS18 collection is inspired by the beauty and grace of ballet masterpieces such as Swan Lake and Nutcracker. The Middle East market is very fashion-driven. How does it differ in comparison to other fashion cultures around the world? I think the fashion industry in other parts of the world move a little too fast. I find that the audience in the Middle East don’t fall for fads and trends that easily. They still go for the classic and timeless styles with only hints of what’s trending in fashion. What is the ultimate trend for you that will always be timeless? Individuality. How do you relax? I like to relax in bed watching movies and tv shows with dog, Duchess. What is your biggest pet peeve when it comes to the fashion industry and how do you overcome some of the challenges this industry brings? People who chase fashion trends just to fit in with the hype. You have gained international recognition as a creative director. How do you feel that you have achieved this? It never fails to surprise me when a famous celebrity wears Amato. I mean, who wouldn’t be? Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Shakira, Nicki Minaj, Beyonce and J.Lo (to name a few) are huge names and they have tons of other designers to choose from right at their fingertips - but instead they chose to wear Amato by Furne One. It makes me proud and honoured, of course.

Tell us what the Amato woman stands for. My collections aren’t for the faint hearted woman, but one who is comfortable in her skin; her ensembles are but a foil to reflect her inner persona. Amato’s signature collections are seen as timeless modern classics that are collector’s items. Meshing cultures, using the region’s rare arts, layering it with eastern and western elements, I create unique pieces for my urbane and globalized clients, reflecting their personal and cultural identities. How do you define your unique creative flair amidst the fashion world and how do you stay relevant? Dubai has definitely changed in the last couple of years since I came. The women have embraced a brand new style - and as a designer, it is important that you know how to look outside of your own comfort zone. The challenge is to learn to adapt to the changes of the fashion world but still remain true to your aesthetic. It is essential to create a balance between the designer’s artistry and creativity with the business side of it all. You’ve previously stated that the achievement that you are most proud of is providing employment for your staff. How do you remain so humble amidst your success? I’m fortunate enough to be given this amazing platform where I can influence, inspire and be a good role model to the people who look up to me. My mother also taught me to value peoples’ trust and respect by keeping your feet on the ground. 82

YOUR TIME OUT
PALLAVI PATIL, Spa Manager at Spa by CLARINS in MARSA MALAZ KEMPINSKI shares with us the importance of taking time for yourself. the only essence of being a woman is identifying as one. Women today have been told we have it all - careers, families, kids, community involvement, and relationships. But all too often, having it all leaves us with no time or strength left for ourselves. Whether you’re wrangling toddlers, sleeplessly awaiting your teen to come home, caring for your ageing parents or all of the above; every woman needs an occasional break for sanity’s sake. This means taking time each day to do something for yourself. The times we live in make us want to escape into another world every so
“A day spa can be a blessing, a place that helps you indulge in some muchneeded ‘me’ time, to switch off and relax, recharge, reflect, detox and beautify.”
To be a woman is more than just flowery clothing, a
long skirt, earrings and makeup, the ability to birth children. It’s not to be a feminine character from a Jane Austen novel. Femininity has many different “faces” and not all of them are pretty, but they are all beautiful. There’s no one right way to be a woman. Not all women want to be mothers, and not all women can have children. Some women are quite feminine, some are not feminine at all. You can find things that most women like or most women go through, but none of them are really essential to womanhood. So really, 84

often, even if it’s just for a few hours, to shut off from external stimulation. This urgent need to get away, especially in the urban scenario, is becoming an increasing reality. This is where a day spa can be a blessing, a place that helps you indulge in some much-needed ‘me’ time, to switch off and relax, recharge, reflect, detox and beautify. The benefits of visiting a spa start with intention. Taking steps for your own well-being can have positive effects. The ‘power of intention’ has been popularised by modern-day healers including Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, ‘The Secret’ and many others. Simply having the right intentions and a place to go to focus on your own well-being can have a powerful effect. Spas help us to benefit from the mind’s powerful healing properties, even when we don’t fully understand them. A visit to a spa usually consists of a certain amount of time simply being in a quiet space, enjoying the experiences one is having or reflecting on whatever is on the mind at that moment. Often the hour that you spend in a spa treatment is the only hour of waking time you have disconnected from technology, disconnected from telephones and disconnected from the demands of a fast-paced world. The most powerful benefits of visiting a spa may come simply from being in a safe space, separated from the interruptions of technology, where you can become present and tune into the thoughts in your own head. Research has shown that people also have a physiological reaction to human touch. Touch not only reduces heart rate, but also levels of hormones such as cortisol that are associated with the stress response. Given the long list of serious physical medical conditions associated with these stress hormones, the ability to lessen their impact makes touch potentially one of the most powerful healing therapies. This “Women’s Day” make a promise to look after yourself as it’s time to take time for you. Don’t wait for the time to just magically appear. Make it happen… ‘cause you deserve it!

Fun in the Sun Belgian Café has claimed our hearts and stomach as the perfect backdrop to a girly get together in Doha.
T
he Intercontinental Doha City hosts a fine array of eateries and fine dining establishments. The luxuriant decor throughout the hotel oozes sophistication and style . As we walked into The Belgian Café we had extremely high expectations as it boasts the finest of Flemish and Belgian cuisine, drinks to match any palate and a continental European vibe. What we found was exactly this and so much more. The dark wooden bar, colonial style chairs and polished mahogany tables transport you to a time when everything operated at a slower pace, when men would never step out

without a jacket and tie and vessels steamed their way to colonies. We took a glimpse outside and the stunning view of the Arabian Gulf did nothing to dispel this image. The atmosphere inside was electric and expectant. Clearly people flock here as an alternative to the usual Friday brunches and themed buffets. Our hosts were very attentive but not suffocating and despite the fact that the café was already bustling at 3pm on a Friday the service was flawless. I would challenge anyone, no matter how particular or discerning, to find fault with the variety and quality of the menu. Steak tartare and Foie Gras rub shoulders with traditional battered fish and frites , crisp , luscious salads and indulgent seafood sharing platters. In addition the hosts offer drinks to match each dish ranging from traditional Belgian hops to perfectly balanced artisanal fruit concoctions. I could barely contain my delight when I discovered that I had ordered triplets, served up in dainty copper mugs. The foie gras, steak tartare and battered fish were a tall act to follow. Moules Frites with an indulgent cream sauce served in a traditional cast iron pot had all of the haughty arrogance necessary to hold it’s own amidst the other delights on the menu. Lauren and Tom, two of the resident musicians had just begun their set as we put down our cutlery. They elevate the mood but maintained the chilled vibe before handing the baton to DJ Sai who appears from Thursday to Saturday. I always believe in saving the best tantalising titbit of information for last. We all agreed that this has to be the bread. Crusty, unctuous continental classics. In order to find out why the presentation is so special you must pay The Belgian Café a visit. My lips are sealed. The Belgian Café is an example of timeless continental class striking a note with old and young, families and friends alike. Smakelijk! Enjoy!

MISS Ohlala
MINDFULNESS OR MINDLESSNESS? MISS OHLALA EXPLORES THE “M” WORD WHILST TRYING TO KEEP AN OPEN MIND. First let me admit that I am a self-confessed cynic. Buzz words like mindfulness continually popping up in my social media feed just make me want to practice *mindlessness. As for those mindfulness adult colouring books sold at every train station and airport, aren’t they just colouring-in books for adults who have zero art skills and have tired of Suduko? According to some experts, active meditation (“M” word alert) focuses attention on simple tasks that require repetitive motion. Isn’t doing the washing up or watching Netflix just as therapeutic and arguably a better use of time? If you want to colour, knock yourself out, but please don’t call it meditation or therapy in front of me. I realise that I may come across as hypocritical given the majority of my hobbies involve creating things such as painting and sewing. I acknowledge that some form of artistic or creative outlet is good for lowering stress and anxiety levels. But can mindfulness colouring books really lead to psychological nirvana? I decided to put aside my cynicism for one moment. According to Wikipedia (the font of all knowledge), mindfulness is “the psychological process of bringing one’s attention to experiences occurring in the present moment, which can be developed through the practice of meditation (oh dear, that “M” word again) and other training”. Leaving the “M” word aside, it follows that paying more attention to the present moment, to ones own thoughts and to the world around us, could improve one’s mental wellbeing. Would I pay money for a mindfulness therapist however? Definitely not. Possibly because I expect they would make me sit cross legged to meditate and I haven’t time, and she had assigned herself the role of Elsa from Frozen, and I was Anna). She was been able to sit like that comfortably since I was four. entirely right. I was zoning out when playing, possibly in order to deal with Let It Go being sung Also perhaps because of a deep-seated scepticism for out of tune for the hundredth time. I realised then that it is my responsibility to be more present in such therapies. Although if I am willing to pay for the moment if I want to be a good role model for my children. Now I try to put my mobile phone yoga and Pilates sessions, why should meditation or in a different room and really get involved when we are playing together. mindfulness be different? As an adult, I always think that I need to be doing something to make good use of my time. Then I read that mindfulness is simply about If I’m not at work, then I am taking care of the children or the house or answering emails. “being present in the moment”. When put like This month I’m going to make a concerted effort to take time out to just enjoy the sunshine, that, I can associate with it. Case in point, my the park, and sitting outside with friends and family. three year old recently pointed out to me that Unlike me, children don’t automatically think the worst when presented with a new situation, I’m going I wasn’t concentrating properly on being to try to be less of a jaded cynic and try to keep an open, positive mindset. This resolution will however Princess Anna (we were play-acting at the likely last less than one day. 98
