Editor’s Letter
A
sk any bride-to-be about planning a wedding and she’ll tell you it’s taking over her life. The administration behind getting this massive party organised requires examining options at least 27 times to find the ‘right’ one – welcome to our wedding issue, perfect timing as bridezilla season is upon us! But believe me, I want you to forgo the typical nightmare scenarios and to keep the fuss to a minimum which is why we have created a spread of not only bridal looks to inspire you but also guest looks that will tick all the style boxes. Speaking of guests, I am firmly in this category, for I am not even close to being a bride – the closest was at my sister’s wedding when I was a happy-go-lucky bridesmaid with two responsibilities: getting all the bridesmaid’s dresses in check and to fan my sister calm if she was creeping towards a fit of vapours. Because she assumed all the responsibility herself, she was washed out by the time the big day arrived but what a fairy-tale affair it was, against the rolling hills of the English countryside; she has impeccably twee taste. The dress is just the half of it, getting the makeup right is another battle in itself – there’s the tendency to want to look like a different person on your wedding day but Sofia Graniello urges you to keep it simple. Remember, trial runs will put you at ease. And as for our darling Miss Ohlala, she almost became a bride. Her story to almost married life is as touching as it is brave. We can all learn from it.

Wedding fever is upon us. With IWED’s successful exhibition on all things bridal, we couldn’t take our eyes off the intricate and delicate gowns, masterful makeup tricks and more. And because we love this season so much, our beauty files are filled with a myriad of useful tricks, dos and don’ts on how to prep for that special day and staying on track. But if you’re over the whole bridal commotion, then you’ll probably love how we gave Oryx Rotana Doha a visit and tried their upbeat and delicious Jazzy Friday Brunch – a must-visit brunch if you want to have a great time. Also, we had a journey of pure wellness at Chi, Shangri-La’s prominent spa, one we’re still recovering from – that’s how good it was! And last but not least, Jawaher Al Fardan, your ultimate female entrepreneur gave us an insight into her latest yoga centre, Niya Yoga, open for anyone who is ready to accomplish the art of yoga in new ways. Enjoy May and another issue of Ohlala.

Ethereal Beauty Rami Al Ali practically makes dresses fit for a queen. His modern fairy-tale gowns are the heigh of Haute Couture with their dreamy fabrics, billowy flows and exquisite embellishments. We couldn’t think of a more appropriate designer for our bridal issue. We speak to the Syrian born designer about his love for the female form and Moorish artistry What has inspired your SS16 collection? I was particularly intrigued by the decorative Moorish artistry; the details are beautiful and it really got the imagination going. I wanted my collection to reflect the different themes and eras but with a modern twist. I experimented with silhouettes, which capture the feminine figure and also incorporate voluminous, multi-layered skirts to seize the masquerade theme. The juxtaposition of both artistries were intertwined together through the form of art and careful use of timehonoured techniques. Your SS16 collection has that fairy-tale wedding about it. How do your bridal collections differ? Our bridal gowns are lovingly crafted with the most luxurious fabrics and embellishments, the latest bridal collection promises to curate unforgettable moments through the art of couture. What does Haute Couture mean to you? What defines it? It’s a part of who I am and is something I’m passionate about. It is a form of art that allows me to vent my creative energy. I am also a huge art fan and often buy extravagant pieces for my home. 56
www.ohlala-magazine.com
What kinds of fabric are you most drawn to? I used to be more into fluid soft fabrics, more sheered and light, such as muslin tulle and silks. Nowadays, I push myself out of my comfort zone, and work with more rigid fabrics, so I can explore new volumes and structures, such as satin duchesse, brocade and thick organza. Tell us a little bit about the stunning embellishments. How do you see that intricate process through? I like to think that every small detail in every design is made to create a bigger and more beautiful picture, and in this collection, we used and incorporated modern time-honoured techniques in the couture collection to modernise the classic embroidery and make it stand out. What kind of women do you love dressing? I wouldn’t say that I cater to just one ideal. There wasn’t any particular woman in mind when I designed any of my collections. I work with many different women; from younger women who want something more cutting-edge, to the older more conservative woman who is looking for something more sophisticated. I’m doing well with both clients and I like catering to both. When something is beautiful, it’s beautiful and you don’t question it.

“Every small detail in every design is made to create a bigger and more beautiful picture. We used and incorporated modern time-honoured techniques in the couture collection to modernise the classic embroidery and make it stand out” How do you want women to feel in your gowns? I want every woman to feel confident and beautiful all the time when wearing my designs. There’s no better looking woman than the one who feels confident in what she’s wearing - she immediately stands out. What part of the female body is the most endearing for you in terms of the way your gowns are cut? I mainly focus on the silhouette of a woman’s body rather than a specific part to bring out the beauty of the dress. Where is your favourite place in the world to unwind in? I like anything with a less city feel, any place with natural surroundings (mountains, forest, beach). Any tucked in small village or countryside. Which city encapsulates your brand’s style? New York and Dubai. 58

Don’t tell us this hasn’t rendered you silent in complete awe? Dubai based Filipino designer, Michael Cinco produces lavish works of art. His SS16 collection, “The impalpable dream of la vie on rose” defines romance. The intricacy with which he creates his pieces is utterly masterful. You enter a new dimension of couture with Michael Cinco.

Beauty Insight
The Power of scent
Les Infusions de Prada is a sensory experience like no other we’ve ever encountered. The visual backstory is what draws us the most to this visceral collection so filled finesse and grace
R
esisting feminine and masculine stereotypes and looking beyond current perfume trends, Les Infusions de Prada are the culmination of a reverence for the past, an understanding of our place in the present, and the forward- looking point of view of Prada. They embody the graceful weave of apparent contradictions at the heart of Prada: heritage moulded to modernity, poetry meeting precision, instinct alongside intellect, subtlety together with power, sensuality emphasized by freshness. An infusion is a transformative encounter from which the unexpected emerges, the new and the familiar. A sensory déjà vu. Les Infusions de Prada dare to recollect with the same emotion as a dream – a subconscious memory that is both powerfully subtle and mysteriously compelling. They are a dynamic imprint on the memory that supersedes the original ingredient. Under the creative direction and inspiration of Miuccia Prada, Les Infusions de Prada are blended by perfumer Daniela Andrier: creating a refined collection of fragrances of rare, sparkling character. Each Infusion reveals a distinctive personality. A confident light touch inspiring subtle intensity.
“I was thinking about the confrontation between the beauty of the past and what makes sense today.” Miuccia Prada
76
www.ohlala-magazine.com
“In Les Infusions de Prada there is a rare luxury you don’t often find nowadays. At first they appear to be very simple, as if you were tattooing water with an ingredient, but in reality it is a very complex formula. In a similar way that water must be at a particular temperature to create the perfect tea, the base composition allows the beauty of a flower, wood or fruit to be revealed in a bright and sensitive way.” Daniela Andrier
The collection is composed of six iconic scents. Iris,IrisCèdre,Fleurd’Oranger, Vétiver, Oeillet and Amande. Each Infusion is a poetic interpretation of a single, emblematic natural ingredient. An elegant confrontation of tradition and modernity. Les Infusions de Prada are represented by the institutional codes of Prada. The vintage flacons are adorned with the classic Prada heritage crest, originally designed in 1913 by Miuccia Prada’s grandfather. In a contemporary twist, a coloured film has been moulded to the base of each bottle, tinting the glass and liquid. Each cap is also differentiated by its own colour. The enigmatic complexity and subversive simplicity of Les Infusions embody the transformative allure of Prada.

Shield & Protect As the mercury starts to rise across the Gulf, Angela Beitz discusses the importance of looking after your skin and staying out of the sun
I
t’s starting to get quite warm. The memory of wintery desert days are now a distant memory as we brace ourselves for another brutal summer. Which brings me to my favourite topic to get preachy about. Sun protection. You can’t talk to an editor or beauty editor without them mentioning (or shouting) about how important it is to protect your skin from the sun. We are all well aware of how attractive tanned skin is. You only need to take a quick scroll through your Instagram feed to see 80

several beautifully bronzed people lying on the beach in the Maldives or the Greek Islands. But the hard truth is that spending time out in the sun can be very harmful, so it’s important to keep your skin protected and healthy allyear round instead of baking yourself like a rotisserie chicken. The common skin problems which result from over-exposure to sunlight are melasma, freckles, darkening of existing freckles and darkening of uneven skin tone. Sunlight can cause harmful effects on the skin such as premature ageing, pigmentation and the worst of them all…skin cancer. These issues are seen more frequently and in a more severe way with fairer skins but people with olive complexions still need be careful, particularly with melanoma. This brings me to my second favourite subject. The importance of sunscreen. Using a high SPF factor is crucial here in the UAE. SPF doesn’t refer to the strength of your protection it refers to the time. So, if you’re using SPF 10, you will get 10 times the amount of time in the sun it would usually take for you to burn. If you use SPF 40, you will get 40 times. So, assuming it takes your skin 10 minutes to burn with no protection, using SPF 40 you have 400 minutes protection from that application. If you are sweating a lot or doing a lot of swimming, you need to constantly reapply. SPF 30 should be used at an absolute minimum and I would strongly recommend SPF 50 and even SPF 100 if you are very fair and it’s great to use on your face. Sunscreen and beauty products have come a long way over the years and it’s great to see a lot of foundations along with CC & BB creams that now have SPF. In saying this, these products aren’t high enough in SPF for a day outside or by the beach or pool. Save them for office days when you won’t be outside in the sun as they don’t have the same long-lasting effects that sunscreen does. If the worst should happen and you do get sunburnt you need to get as many antioxidants into your skin as quickly as possible. Products with Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Aloe Vera, Green Tea will help to stop the free radicals that have harmed your skin and help to prevent premature ageing. The best thing you can do is to stay out of the sun and save yourself the drama and get a spray-tan. The nice bronze, glowy type. You’ll thank me for it later in life.

Musings from Monte Carlo The tiny Riviera tax haven is one of the most luxurious destinations in the world, frequented by many a celebrity and billionaire yacht owners. Editor in Chief Georgie Bradley stays at Hotel Hermitage and lives out the ultimate high life fantasy

Travel Escapes As the helicopter lifted up from the ground with a shaky
hover against its own gusty air from below, I gulped with a pang of trepidation - our next stop was Monte Carlo – a swift 12-minute journey from Nice’s airport. I was flying with Heli Air Monaco – a 50 flight per day service – to the glitzy shores of Monte Carlo, lined with palm trees, quaintly coloured front doors and steeply-inclined streets. The Principality of Monaco has enjoyed a reputation of wealth and glamour, and my choice of transport to it, only seemed appropriate. The helicopter skimmed over the sparkling Mediterranean Sea, where the sun flared its rays onto the slightly choppy waters giving them a soft glow. The surreal “is this really happening?” moments set in from the outset; as we landed in Monte Carlo a fleet of shiny black Mercedes were waiting for us just off the heli pad – ah, a heli pad, the hallmark of Monegasque life. Winding between low-rise apartment buildings and stand-alone houses with impressive marbling and pillars I caught glimpses of the yacht filled ports as we chartered across the dainty streets. Being such a small place, 499 acres, Monaco feels like a playground for adults – with unlimited funds. What fun.
Monaco is home to a clutch of handsome hotels, historically rich and dripping with decadence. At the time I had just finished a breathtaking week in Paris for Fashion Week – my energy levels were down and I needed to luxuriate to get back on track – it’s a fabulously hard life, what can I say? Hotel Hermitage, my home for three nights, sits lordly on a gradient above the main port, overlooking the old-town. The grounds are endless, or rather, deep and layered. The main lobby is of a modest size but with the prestige of crystal chandeliers and elegance in its furnishings. It is said to be the birthplace of a luxury palace where at the dawn of the 20th century, Monegasque architect Jean Marquet built an upscale and luxurious hotel, a neoclassical edifice among orange and olive trees dotting Monte-Carlo, facing the sea. The labyrinth layout hints at The Shining’s Overlook Hotel, minus the twins and the general sense of foreboding – the Hotel Hermitage’s historic soul lingers on every staircase, every inch of the ceilings and the Winter Garden’s iconic glass roof speaks volumes of sophistication – even with its restoration, its former glory is still very much intact. The 278 rooms and 88 suites and 12 Diamond Suites renovated
“Monaco is a packed bubble of extravagance and spectacle” by Pierre-Yves Rochon offer unique comfort, a beautiful blend between ancient and contemporary. Hotel Hermitage perpetuates the chic quality of the Riviera and Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer’s art of entertaining. When I’m shown to my room, it’s as if I’ve walked into legend. The Belle Époque style interiors are intimate, cosy and rich if you’re a lover of luxury, you’ve met your match here. Despite being tastefully modernised, you can’t fault the historical loyalty – it almost feels like a black & white film set where Grace Kelly would be sitting all plumped up in a dramatic gown getting her makeup done against the vastly high ceilings. The nods to neo-classical style give an apt worldly touch to a hotel that has seen its fair share of the world’s glittering stars but also discreet tycoons who come to bask in the fruits of their labour in absolute splendor. The bed, more than your typical King size proportions is exceedingly comfortable. The balcony overlooks the main port and the stacked up city – 84

Monaco has a very tight feel to it but the residents are so warm and happy you look past it. I can imagine drooping over the balcony during the Grand Prix - taking in all the excitement and fervor of the season –is a sight to behold. The twee table and chairs make for a perfect spot for breakfast where you can gaze longingly as the day rises above you – again, the makings of a movie! I was travelling solo but joined a dynamo of Brazilian journalists, also on this press trip, to experience this opulence together. We started off by going on a complete hotel tour – we were even given a map so as to chart our whereabouts, it’s a real complex of a hotel – and we visited the many showpiece suites in this plush property. Among them was the Diamond Penthouse Suite of unparalleled splendor. Each room in this suite is delicately infused with haute-couture tones of taupe, aubergine and gold. You’ve got ample space including: three bedrooms, three living rooms, three bathrooms, two dressing rooms and one playroom for

Travel Escapes children with two terraces offering a panoramic 360 degree vide of the port. The classic touches are balanced with contemporary finishes (cutting-edge technology) that make it uber special. When it comes to dining, Monte Carlo is the centre of gastronomic greatness. In the four days I was there, there wasn’t one meal which wasn’t of Michelin standard. Dinner at Le Vistamar by Chef Joel Garault on the first night proved to be the best entry into the amazing offerings at this property. This restaurant is devoted to culinary art as well as home-grown goodness. Chef Garault sources his vegetables, fruit and herbs at the Condamine Market in Monaco, all provided by a local farmer. Each dish came meticulously prepared with flair and grace – my Hake fish gambero rosso from Genoa gulf/fennel was particularly smooth to cut into and was subtle and fresh in flavour and was my first foray into this member of the fish family, a real treat. With its idyllic setting overlooking the sea, you can’t go wrong here. For a tipple before lights out, I sauntered to the Limun Bar, located close to the lobby. It’s an intimate and elegant space decorated in pastel hues and is a prime venue to unwind after dinner. When it comes to spas, I cannot call myself a novice anymore. I have had my fair share of experiences that can only be likened to heaven-state. I was booked in for a Cryotherapy experience and a massage at Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo. The former left me with the most exhilarating feeling – I felt exhausted and energised in one go. You enter two cold chambers, one at -60 degrees and the other at -110 degrees (this is said to be the temperature in space) and you quite literally freeze. I managed to get through two whole minutes before my brain was about to explode. The experience is said to procure relaxation and reduce stress, I can also add that it gives you a youthful glow afterwards – all that freezing gives you a renewed freshness. I then headed to the treatment rooms for a soothing massage in a white washed, calming set up. Stress doesn’t stand a chance at Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo, it’s supreme. You can also enjoy a light lunch at the health restaurant, L’Hirondelle, on its sun-dappled terrace. My meal was luminous in colour (prawn fritters, mango carpaccio, avocado tartar with fresh tomatoes, ponzu dressing) and a complete knockout in taste. Beyond Hotel Hermitage the Brazilian journalists and I whisked around the coast of Monte Carlo to visit other Société des Bains de Mer properties, namely the famous: Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort and Monte-Carlo Beach Hotel. These choice properties are in the high-rolling heart of the hotel circuit and are ludicrously luxurious in every possible sense. If you want to soak up the sun in the summer months, these hotels offer the perfect getaway experience, taking care of your and your every want and need. We also had a nine (nine!) course meal at the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort’s Blue Bay restaurant by Chef Marcel Ravin. As far as sensory journeys go, this one was on overdrive. Among the standout dishes were: roasted racks of lamp coated with homemade lard and honey as well as the Elsa soufflé with Sicilian almonds. It was impossible to get more out of the Monte-Carlo dining experiences – ah, what a struggle to have. Monaco is a packed bubble of extravagance and spectacle. I highly doubt I will ever be a true Monegasque, but this extraordinary trip gave my mere mortalness an exciting jolt into a world like no other. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Local Women Tell us a little bit about your background and connection with yoga?
I’m a yoga teacher, holistic health advocate and wellness entrepreneur. I first started exploring these ideas five years ago when I was studying mental health and wellbeing at university in London. I studied the correlation between unhealthy lifestyles and mental illness and unhappiness and realised that this is an area that’s really worth exploring. I started experimenting with different types of fitness - running, martial arts, CrossFit, spin, and everything in between! I dabbled with pescetarianism, vegetarianism, and finally raw and veganism... and back. I found what worked for me and came to understand that although there’s definitely no one size fits all, similar principles do apply to us all. When I found yoga, this notion was highlighted to me even more. I decided to train as a yoga teacher and was fortunate enough to study with some incredible teachers in India, Bali and LA. I’ve explored vinyasa, hatha, tantra yoga and meditation and completed over 500 hours of training. What brought you to open a yoga centre in Doha? In Qatar, sometimes it can be difficult to be healthy. Social gatherings tend to revolve around large meals- which actually should only be an occasional thing, rather than part of the everyday. Having had the opportunity to travel and study abroad, I’ve seen how different countries and cultures approach health and fitness in different ways. In fact, we don’t have to be more Indian or Balinese to explore our deeper well being: we can be whatever we are, with simply a new intention, or Niya. I want to share these ideas and everything I’ve learnt with the country I grew up in. I come from a family of entrepreneurs and have always been taught the importance of giving back. I see this as my service - my way to help, to heal. How do you think yoga is viewed in Qatar and the region? Our understanding of yoga in Qatar is changing rapidly. People are realising that it’s a practice that can work for everyone, no matter your age, nationality, or fitness level. It’s an exciting time in the Middle East as these ideas of wellness are spreading and I’m thrilled that I’m opening Niya Yoga and am part of this movement. What can we expect from Niya Yoga? The studio will offer over 35 yoga classes a week, workshops with international teachers, wellness weekends, teacher training programmes and so much more! We’re creating a space where you can just be as you are - no judgement, no expectations. The studio is a community: together, we can explore, learn, and connect with ourselves and others. We take what works for us, and leave the rest. Most importantly, we are TRUE to ourselves and our purest niyas (intentions). Besides yoga, what else do you get involved in? I am excited to also be opening Evergreen Organics, Qatar’s first fully vegan cafe, next door to Niya Yoga. We want to nourish people from the inside out. I also like to constantly switch it up with physical activity and fitness, so I’ve helped set up the Nike run club here, I keep my training constant and varied. There are a few other projects that will be coming soon! 90

Keep calm & Yoga On
There is a new yoga studio and holistic healing centre in town and founder Jawaher Al Fardan, gives us an insight into the wonders of Niya Yoga which is set to take everyone on a ride of health and wellbeing
For those who’ve never taken a yoga session, what would you advise? Try not to compare yourself to anyone else in the class - remember that even those advanced looking people doing crazy poses were beginners once too! Be patient and give yourself time - yoga is a journey of discovery. What does the future hold for Jawaher Al Fardan? I want to keep learning and keep sharing. I have so many ideas - watch this space!

A Jazzy friday Brunch
If you’re new in town then there’s one thing you need to know: Brunches are a thing here. Sofia Graniello visits Oryx Rotana Doha for a relaxing afternoon at Choices
B
runches are a big deal in Doha, and let’s be honest, in the entire region. I’ve always been fascinated by brunches, its concept and the atmosphere they create among expats and locals. Being highly popular in Doha, the demand for a Friday brunch is high. Having tried exceptional places and exquisite buffets, I’ve found a gem that suits my appetite and standards. Fridays can seem empty if you haven’t got the right kind of friends, but if you’re lucky enough to have a group of them, or family, then you’re in for a treat. Oryx Rotana Doha is well known for its diverse offerings: promotions, amazing cuisine and what I enjoy best, entertainment. Their brunches are no exception. Having tried one not too long ago, the international cuisine buffet at the exquisite Jazzy Friday Brunch happening at Choices, it didn’t disappoint one bit. Not knowing what to choose, I started off with my safest selection with an array of sushi rolls and sashimi. Pleasantly surprised by their freshness, it was definitely the perfect kick for my appetite. Nonetheless, this brunch offers an variety of dishes to indulge in. Keeping my options open for the next bit, I had my eye on their tasty prime rib, mashed potato, pizza and sweets. I couldn’t say no to their mocktails – which were heavenly. But if perhaps your kids are coming along and you’re a bit skeptical about whether you will enjoy this fabulous brunch, fear not. The concept is kidfriendly with a fun corner, so they can also enjoy it too. And as for the adults? Live entertainment by music band, N2 from South Africa will do just the trick for a great Friday. Furthermore in this delicious odyssey, I really enjoyed 92

the hotel’s al fresco area where you can eat outside with numerous cooking stations around the pool area for that extra wow factor. your
Special day
Your big day is just around the corner, so how about a smart guide on keeping fit and healthy for it? Our resident contributor, Esmeralda van der Westhuizen, Marsa Malaz Kempinski’s Spa Manager shares her must-follow tips
Gulp Up
Nobody tends to drink enough water and while this is the oldest trick in the book, it’s there for a reason. Water is the answer to youthful, fresh, ‘glowy’ skin. Try to get at least 1-2 litres a day (especially in the run-up to your wedding.)
Take Supplements
Omega fish oils are fantastic for your skin and hair. They help with inflammation, acne and various other skin problems. It will take a few weeks to notice a difference but take them, unfailingly.
Beautiful Bridal Skin
gets blood flow going, helps with cellulite and works on bumpy skin. Use a scrub in the shower every other day and moisturise, while your skin is still damp, to help lock in moisture.
Stick To Your Stylist
Get organised and schedule any colour appointments up to two weeks before the big day. Be sure to book in with the same hair stylist so that they can stick to the plan. Don’t make any drastic changes in the weeks up to the wedding. Impulse fringes, layers or drastic color changes are often regretted.
Preparation Is Key
There’s nothing more beautiful than the natural glow of happiness that becomes of every bride. To help ensure your skin looks picture perfect on your wedding day, its advised that you begin facials as early as six months before your wedding day.
It takes three months for a nail to grow. So start early by having a consultation with a professional to ensure you are having treatments and using products that are right for you. As with eye make-up, it reflects the light more than matte products and can look different on the photographs. Matte with glossy finish is a favourite.

Don’t Forget Your Body
And remember: “It’s you he asked to marry him, and it’s you he wants to see at the altar.”
Many women don’t realise that having their eyebrows done, for example, can cause swelling, sometimes a little bleeding and discomfort -- you don’t want to have to deal with this the day before your wedding. Have your brows shaped one week before the big day. Body waxing should be done at least three days prior to your wedding . Dry body brushing is an amazing way to see a huge change in your skin. It 96

One of the most frustrating feelings is walking out of a salon on your wedding day feeling like you don’t look like yourself. To avoid those wedding-day tears, have a hair and makeup “dress rehearsal” at least two weeks prior to your wedding, and make sure you bring your headpiece to the hairdresser, take a digital picture to really see how you look.

Art Corner Artist, nastassja E. Swift
The “it” in the title is meant to be open for interpretation. Whether it’s racism, feelings of wanting to escape otherness, wishing I was a lighter complexion, wondering why many of my peers don’t look like me, or questioning why my speech is a problem among other black people, all of these concerns have been repetitive thoughts in my mind at one point. How did you come up with the concept? I originally wanted a title that implied a desire of constructing or finding the right identity, so “Assemble-d” was what I thought the name of the exhibition would be. Through text, I told Gina (the other artist in residence), “ I think I figured out my title, I keep repeating it over and over in my head”. By “it” I meant the title ‘Assemble-d’, however Gina misunderstood my text and thought it was the actual title. At first I wasn’t sold on that as my title and felt it was too long, but I thought about what it means to repeat something over and over and have to constantly think about it. It was strange and weird, and the more I thought about the title, the more it made sense in reference to my work. “It” could be almost
Again & Again
Over & Over in my head Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar hosted an eye-opening exhibition from their Artist in Residence, Nastassja E. Swift. The young artist talks racism, classism and what this exhibition truly means to her ‘I Keep Repeating It Over & Over In My head,’ is the title of VCUQatar Gallery’s latest exhibition. This phenomenal space was a culmination of arduous work documenting the artist’s experience in the Gulf. The artist, Nastassja E. Swift, wanted to portray feelings of doubt and anxiety felt by an individual who has experienced racism through a number of pieces that brought her to fuse memories from her childhood, with fictional responses that depict provocative self-portraits and narratives. As an artist, what is it that keeps repeating over and over in your head? 100 www.ohlala-magazine.com
anything and was open enough to allow the viewer to figure out what is being repeated and why. In the end, I felt like it was a much better choice and described perfectly my feelings towards this issue of identity struggles. Having experienced racism firsthand, what kind of awareness would you like to bring with this exhibition? Racism, classism and feelings of otherness exist in every country and in every community. My choice of communication is my work. I don’t see racism ending anytime soon considering how long it has existed, but avoiding the conversation and trying to pretend as though it doesn’t exist isn’t a solution. These issues have to be addressed. What kind of reaction, or emotion are you looking for from viewers? I anticipate that some will feel uncomfortable, disturbed, confused, worried or upset, and all are welcome. They don’t necessarily have to agree with me. camouflaged

The Mercedes GLC 4matic The GLC replacesthe GLK asthe mid-size crossover offering from Mercedes, and in our opinion, it’s quitethe improvement and athrillto drive
W
e didn’t have anything against the GLK at all – it’s a luxurious and practical midsize family crossover. That is, we didn’t until we saw its replacement, the GLC. By comparison, the GLC makes the GLK look boxy and plain. It’s sleeker, curvier, and slightly bigger than its predecessor, and boasts subtle improvements all over. Like the GLK, the GLC sits above the compact GLA and below the GLE Coupe in the SUV range. For this model, Mercedes have done away with the trio of V6 petrol engines from the GLK, and instead opted to go for one universal 2.0l turbo inline-four cylinder engine. At 241hp, it’s slightly less powerful than the biggest option on the GLK, the 3.5l V6, which put out 268hp. However, thanks to the turbo, it boasts more torque, at 370Nm, compared to the V6’s 350Nm, and it’s also more efficient. That big torque from the turbo makes the GLC very quick off the mark, and when combined with the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system, you have an SUV that is fast, agile, and a lot of fun to drive, not to mention very safe. The seating position and big windows make for superb driving visibility, and there’s an extremely light and airy feel thanks to the panoramic sunroof. All of this combines to make the interior feel even more light and spacious than it already is. As you’d expect, the interior is luxurious and stylish, with comfortable leather seats, and that futuristic, and yet somehow 106 www.ohlala-magazine.com
organic vibe that typifies Mercedes interiors these days. It’s achieved through a combination of flowing, curved lines and wood panelling, and an absence of harsh angles, all creating a tranquil and relaxing setting. The large dash-mounted touchpad gives you easy control over the car’s functions, and can also be controlled via the dial/touchpad combo on the centre console between the driver and front passenger. The dial can be a little tricky to get the hang of initially, but once you’re used to it, you’ll find it intuitive and well-placed for easy reach. In terms of practicality, cargo space isn’t the biggest we’ve ever seen. While it’s fine for shopping or sports gear, anything larger will be a squeeze. While the back seats do fold flat, unless you do so a full set of luggage for a family of four is out of the question, which makes it less than suitable for long road trips. As for the safety and driver assistance, this is a Mercedes at the end of the day, and what that means is cutting-edge, pioneering safety technology. The car features 360 degree sensors all around the vehicle to assist with parking, overtaking and collision avoidance. For example, if the car senses that you’re approaching the car in front to quickly, if it has braked suddenly and you haven’t noticed, for example, it will warn you and start braking for you, to reduce the chance of impact. Overall, the GLC is an attractive, luxurious and enjoyable midsize SUV and, most importantly for a family car, it’s extremely safe, making it well worth the premium price tag, in our opinion.

Miss Ohlala
I was once a Bride-To-Be With wedding season in full swing, all I have left is to reminisce over my one time bride-to-be moment
I was once ready to say ‘yes’ forever. I was once ready to change my last name for good old tradition, and I was once ready to have kids without question. But, what happened? You must be wondering. I couldn’t do it. It was that simple. It wasn’t that I got cold feet, or I got scared of a life-long commitment to one man. Truth is, he was not the one for me. He was my first true love and we were both young, reckless, and stupid. I remember vividly the day he proposed; I can still smell his sweet perfume, his dirty white t-shirt, rugged jeans, and filthy red Converse. And me with equal innocence, I was wearing my black leggings and my usual grey Vans. We were sitting at the MIA Park coffee shop, looking at the city’s skyscrapers ready to witness the multi-coloured sunset of the Middle East. He had come over to Qatar for Eid from university. As two young adults, we were desperate to fix what we had broken and we were eager to get back on track. He looked nervous, perplexed and a bit worried. But still he tried to keep his cool. He was sipping his usual green tea, and I was indulging in my karak. He began with: “We’ve been together for 4 years now…” A sentence that could go wrong in many ways but could also be the start of something perfect. In all honesty, I was ready to hear: “I need time, or I don’t love you anymore,”- that kind of thing. Worried about how I was supposed 122 www.ohlala-magazine.com
to react to this soon-to-be breakup conversation, he immediately jumped without hesitation and blurted out the words I was longing to hear from him for many years: “I want to marry you.” My life began flashing before my eyes. Everything I ever wanted was in front of me; everything I wanted for in a partner, he was that and more. Being 23 and gullible, I wasn’t sure how to respond. All I did was tear up, nod, and hugged him. From that day on, I knew he was the man I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. I felt safe, confident, secure, and understood as a woman. But now you’re wondering: Well, why didn’t you marry him? To make it short and dramatic, we broke up three months after that proposal. We were great together, but we weren’t the right fit for each other. Six months later, he came back to my life, and pops the same question. Sadly, we weren’t compatible anymore. Many ask, how do you get over a relationship like that? Well, I will always be fond of him and every memory we constructed together for many years. But, losing my best friend was the toughest bit. But it has a happy ending I promise. We are both civilized exes. He is now happy in a great relationship and I’m happily dating Mr. T. Miss Ohlala is a hopeless romantic and she isn’t quitting on love just yet...
