EDITOR’S LETTER

A

quick google search tells me that searches for ‘modest fashion’ are up 500% since this time last year. The global modest fashion market is already reportedly worth hundreds of billions and is set to scale up by gargantuan proportions over the next five years. There are specialist stores popping up - full of suitably modest pieces from an incredible roll call of brand names, and every kind of girl is shopping from them, whether they identify as “modest” or not. When you step outside of this specific realm, it’s plain to see that runways, cool brands and street style stars alike are also noticeably embracing big shapes, covered-up silhouettes and creative layering. Modest fashion is everywhere. But what exactly is it? As a whole, this movement has been picking up the pace for nigh on a decade, but there’s still a fogginess about what it means to be a modest dresser, what it looks like and how it’s affecting style-conscious girls right now. Outside of facts and figures, take a second to think about where fashion is headed right now: Social media has prompted diversity to become a mainstay, not a gimmick, within the industry. It’s also shone a light on the (obvious) facts that women of different shapes, faiths, colours, sizes and backgrounds can be just as stylish and can be equally valuable customers. Once you put aside the misconception that modest fashion is only tied to religious and religious-ethnic desires then you can be confident in the knowledge that covering up doesn’t have to equate to looking boring or avoiding trends as this month’s issue clearly showcases. Ramadan Kareem!

LEGENDARY L ON G E V I T Y

JAYNE GREEN talks to the refreshingly honest MRS LAUDOMIA PUCCI, the daughter of the renowned fashion designer Emilio Pucci, about its Fall Winter 2018-19 collection and the glamorous core of this eponymous brand.

our father, Emilio Pucci, is easily one of the most outstanding designers of his time. Do you feel a certain level of pressure to ‘live-up’ to expectations being his daughter? There is always some sort of pressure when you enter a family business, as of course the name you carry is not per se sufficient to assure a successful succession. In my case it’s just been harder because often people think it is all automatic; however, it’s now been 33 years I’ve been working in the brand and I can only feel happy that my father gave me the opportunity of carrying his brand forward. Today Pucci exists thanks to the fact that I have been able to change most of the company, from the ownership (i.e. today LVMH is the major shareholder) onwards, yet keeping a strong sense of continuity with its origins and DNA. Emilio Pucci’s own ties with America – his love for sportswear and a groundbreaking lingerie deal dating back to the Fifties - inspire a glitzy detour across ideas of femininity. The jet set aura and the sporty spirit are mixed and glamorously mingled. How have you ensured that this vision is showcased throughout the design in your Fall Winter 2018-19 collection? The Pucci narrative is very vast and allows the creative team to be curious and experimental with the brand, mixing different moments of its history and of its world. This season it’s the glamour of Hollywood mixed with feminine lingerie, an urban sporty touch and various elements of the brand were carried forward and played around with. I thought it was modern, fresh and very desirable. You have already collaborated with a whole accolade of renowned designers such as Christian Lacroix, Stephan Janson to Peter Dundas. Is there anyone else you would love to collaborate with? I always enjoy working with talents, it can be the print team, the designers, even an artist. I always learn and discover something new. Marilyn Monroe was famously buried in a Pucci dress. What design from the Emilio Pucci brand could you not live without? It’s more than a print for me. It’s a lifestyle concept that I believe is perfect, I live by it, easy to travel in, glamorous, and you can style it as you wish and it always looks right. People are more aware of what they are wearing now-a-days and where their clothing is sourced. Do you follow a particular ethical approach throughout your portfolio? We are very conscious about sustainability and for example we source fabrics, as our jersey, in a sustainable way. We also have had no waste product for many years and buy and re-use leftover fabrics for multiple purposes. I think it’s very important. This idea of jet-set lifestyle continues to play a relevant role in the development of the label. Where do you gain your inspiration for such innovative designs? The brand has clearly too many possibilities and so many ways of looking at it, however lifestyle is key and jet-set for me means happy moments: inspirations from happiness is quite easy. What is your plan for the near future, and where do you hope to take Emilio Pucci in the next five to ten years? I am more and more attracted to young talents and try to work and scout them all over. I would like to prepare a new generation to learn and love this brand, QUICKFIRE QUESTIONS and react to its deep meaning. FAVOURITE SCENT? EN PASSANT – EDITION FREDERIC MALLE Tell us about your biggest challenge that you have FAVOURITE DESIGNER? (OTHER THAN EMILIO PUCCI) NOT SURE, PROBABLY faced with Emilio Pucci and how you have overcome FOR THIS SUMMER, JACQUEMUS such difficulties FAVOURITE FOOD? SALADS, GREEN AND VEGETABLES After more than 30 years in the brand I do not feel like it FAVOURITE BEAUTY PRODUCT? GUERLAIN COSMETICS has been an issue with challenges, but finding solutions. I enjoy innovating the way I relate to the brand. How would you describe someone who wears Emilio Pucci? The Pucci woman is a confident international woman who enjoys travel and life. She has no age; she loves art and colours! She is feminine and has a strong sense of aesthetics. Your designs are very charismatic and unique, with such an artistic flair being present would one find them practical? Yes, one often thinks it is all about prints but this is just a side even if key. The practicality comes from the mix and match, as well as the styling. www.emiliopucci.com everfashion.co

M Y PA R I S YSL Beauté introduces a new addition to the Mon Paris family – Mon Paris Couture Eau de Parfum. Irresistible chypre floral citrus, this sparkling new eau de parfum is a celebration of ecstatic love, and is the third member of the Mon Paris legacy, joining the Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum - but with a different twist. Like a sharp intake of breath, Mon Paris Couture opens with the familiar hit of bergamot, grapefruit, and raspberry yet has an immediate difference – a soft, watery freshness thanks to lychee and mandarin notes. A little sweet, yet with a zingy bitterness to arouse curiosity, it is at once engaging and inviting. 58

THE PERFECT BALANCE Aesop formulated its new skin care range, In Two Minds, to address the complex needs of combination skin and restore the skin to a state of calm equilibrium. The In Two Minds range features a cleanser, toner and moisturiser, each containing a potent blend of scientifically proven ingredients and botanicals to balance and soothe combination skin. The range has been formulated to address the multifaceted nature of combination skin rather than a single aspect, and restore the skin’s delicate balance. Each of the products work together to gently cleanse combination skin, normalise sebum production.

THE NEW CLASSIC In 2018, Chanel’s famous, Les Beiges reinvents nude style that plays by its own rules. The complexion becomes sheer, revealing the texture of the skin; natural colours blush atop cheekbones and lips to bring out radiance and heighten a natural healthy glow, while eyes are barely swept with a tinted breeze. And because there is not one nude but many, Les Beiges now adapt to all skin tones with a wide palette of shades and an overall approach (complexion, eyes, lips) that enhances the natural beauty of all women.

H Y D R AT I N G P O W E R The solution to any skin issue is often hydration. But how do you choose from the endless moisturisers on the market? Get back to the source by harnessing the power of water to keep your skin fresh and hydrated with L’OCCITANE’s brand-new Aqua Réotier collection. The surprising new textures will excite all your senses. Formulated with the calcium-rich water of Provence’s Réotier spring, the hydrating facial routine not only moisturises skin but is efficient for at least 24 hours.

I

t’s very important during Ramadan to look after yourself. Even if you aren’t fasting, the temperatures start to rise due to summer, meaning longer and hotter days. Some people see the month of Ramadan as an opportunity to turn over a new leaf, which is great and anyone can do this. Been slacking off at the gym? Eating badly? Not looking after your skin? The Holy Month is the perfect time break a habit or start or new one as it’s a good time to reflect on things you want for yourself. It’s best to not start a whole new program at this time as it can be unrealistic but it’s good to make small changes that you might have tried to start at the beginning of year and forgotten about. It is a common saying that it takes 40 days for a new habit to be created or a bad one to be destroyed and the month of Ramadan, which already requires change, may be a good start. If you aren’t looking at making huge changes during Ramadan, it’s super important to be mindful about gaining weight and most will want to make fitness a priority. These goals can only be accomplished through planning during this blessed time. Make an eating plan at the beginning of the month and also make a plan to go to the gym 3-4 times a week and stick to it. Incorporating something like yoga is also a good idea, as it’s low impact and will relax your body and mind. By the end of the month you’ll feel fabulous and these habits will now be part of your regular routine.

RENEW, REFRESH, REST

The Holy Month is the perfect time for reflection, breaking bad habits and creating new ones, Angela Beitz explains 62

www.ohlala-magazine.com

SOME OF THE BEST WAYS TO LOOK AF TER YOURSELF DURING RAMADAN: • Drink fluids between fasting times • Once you break your fast, start with something like dates and then try to eat healthily and include wholegrains, fruits and vegetables • Don’t go overboard on desserts, sugary drinks and fried food • Avoid long amounts of time in the sun • Exercise moderately • Rest when you can If you’re abstaining from eating and drinking during Ramadan it’s important to remain focused, stay in shape and eat the right foods when you break your fast. If you’re going to be fasting and also sticking to your normal fitness routine during Ramadan then this is great but can be more difficult. Ramadan can put a lot of strain on those who are only eating when the sun goes down. Exercise and good nutrition are difficult to maintain during the Holy Month, a time when dehydration, decreased muscle mass and weight gain are common amongst people who fast. Whatever your plans are this month it’s important to listen to your body and take care of yourself. Mind, body and soul. Wishing you a blessed Ramadan.

ell us about yourself. What makes you tick? I am a french artist with italian origins. I’ve always known that I wanted to be an artist. Drawing has always been essential to me as well as one needs oxygen to breathe. As a child I was frustrated - I couldn’t find the images I was dreaming of, in the real world. I’ve always had a lot of images inside of me. Making these images real has been the biggest thrill in my life. I am interested in people - their lives, their stories, their weaknesses, their strength. I love to meet people and listen to them, exchange ideas with them. Can you briefly explain your creative process, mediums, etc? It’s always a challenge - while I paint, I have to feel love. My subject has to be the most important person in the world to me. I first draw too many lines on the paper with a pencil, and then I delete most of them. I like it when it looks simple. I use ink. Ink is a dangerous medium - it does not allow a second chance. I like that idea. The most important thing to me is to show how it feels to actually meet the person I’ve portrayed. When you meet people you don’t necessarily pay attention to every detail -skin, spots, wrinkles... When the person is gone you remember the style, the perfume, the personality. That’s exactly what I try to render on paper. Has the French perspective on work influenced you? I feel french, thus my work must look french, I guess. But I also feel italian - it’s an important part of my culture. I hope my work shows both influences. I love unfinished works - they are full of promises. It has to be light and human. I am not interested in perfect technique. I like messy elegance. I can be baroque or simple. People daily undergo various moods. Give us a brief history of who you have worked with up to the current date. I have worked with Ines de la Fressange, Marpessa Hennink, Jean Paul Gaultier, Dior, Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Lancôme, Givenchy, John Nollet... I did the french Vogue Colouring Book. I regularly work with the French Vogue. I work each week for the Madame Figaro, each month for Town & Country, Transfuge... What are your plans for the future? Tell us about any exciting news in the pipeline It’s always complicated to reveal what’s in the pipeline. I’ve just

done 14 images for the Dior Museum in Granville, I am preparing a couple of very exciting surprises. I like to go where I am not expected to be. That’s where you’ll find me soon... Who has been an inspiration to you and who would you most like to collaborate with and why? I fell in love with René Gruau’s work when I was 4. I also learned a lot from the work of Thoulouse Lautrec, Saul Bas, Degas, Ingres, Klimt... I think you get influenced everyday in various ways. As for the future, there are so many people I would love to work with ! I love challenges. I love to explore new territories. But I do think it’s important to have unaccomplished fantasies. It’s important to have dreams yet to be realised. You’re now considered as one of the world’s leading fashion artists. How does one react to such a title? Although I am quite flattered when you tell me so, I would never think of myself in those terms ! It’s really hard to theorise upon my own work. I am working so hard all the time that I actually do not realise what is going on around me. I never look back. I want what’s next. It’s a peculiar balance between fear and desire. Fashion Week is a really inspiring environment, but, that timeframe is limited. Where do you find your inspiration for the rest of the year? Everywhere ! Ideas are everywhere - in a novel, in a song, in the shadow of the tree in front of your house, in magazines, in the streets... As for fashion weeks, they are very special - you have to be everywhere at the same time in Paris to attend the shows, and when it’s over you have something like three days to create around 50 images. You have to think quick. It’s kind of my olympic games. In between fashion weeks, you can take your time, you can try things. And there are so many things to be tried. So, if a designer has spent a lot of time on a creation, does it take you a lot of time to sketch it, as well? Often the most simple images are the toughest to build. As long as the viewers think it’s easy and quick, that’s fine with me. Sometimes the magic happens your hand obeys your mind, everything is fluid and easy. Sometimes you have to fight very hard until it almost drives you crazy. And you perfectly know it when it does not work like you intend it to. It can be really painful. It teaches you patience, the hard way. What does an average day look like for you? There is not a single day that I have not been frightened to death of what I am expected to accomplish. After a bit of physical exercise, most of the time I am alone at my desk, working or doing research for the next image. I usually put on some music to stimulate me. There are also lots of appointments of all kind during the day. Often I also work at night for fashion events. It requires a lot of concentration from me beforehand. Late at night I answer my messages and e-mails. Your portrait work illustrations are host to a whole accolade of A-list fashion houses and people. Do the people you sketch have to fit select criteria or can someone like ‘me’ be sketched? I’ve always done portraits, everywhere, even on vacation - that’s my way of bonding, that’s my language. So of course I draw all sorts of people all the time. I don’t think in terms of A-list. Anyone is welcome in my world. Tell us an interesting fact about yourself. At night I wear a black outfit and a black mask and I fight crime on the roofs of Paris, under the name of Batman... But shhhh! It’s a secret. @marcantoinecoulon marc-antoinecoulon.fr

FUN BUT FABULOUS! We were one of the first to experience the exclusive tasting and preview of the Ramadan Tent at Fateh Al Khair, The Ritz-Carlton Doha as they unveiled a rich Qatari heritage-inspired theme, hosting a feast of the senses.

W

e were lucky enough to get a sneak peek behind the scenes of this years Ramadan offerings at The Ritz Carlton Doha, one of Qatar’s older and most established hotel brands and you know what they say, with age comes experience! It’s that time of year again. Ramadan is coming. Cue a culinary season that’s a highlight in the foodie calendar teeming with stacked plates, infinite iftar buffets and more sweet treats than you can shake a marshmallow stick at. The annual Ramadan tent will be housed, as usual, in the stunning, vast and ornate ballroom. You can expect some live music with musicians playing the oud and cosy tents in the corner for more private gatherings, as well as tables and chairs where families, large groups and smaller gatherings can join together for this important ritual. We couldn’t help but be impressed by the length of imagination that the chefs had gone too. There was a strong emphasis on Arabic food but there were also sections that were international. There was even a section that was specifically and quintessentially Qatari. This iftar is certainly ticking a lot of boxes! You can look forward to Qatari specialities like seafood harra, lamb harris, chicken maklouba and hammour sayadia. Among the Arabic food offerings, the traditional mezze stands out for its excellent hummus including a sumptuous beetroot dip and impressive moutabel and fattoush. The warm breads and rolls were freshly produced in-house and they were certainly very good. The cheese and zaatar manakish were delicious as was the kibbeh. More internationally, my attention was grabbed by the Mexican station offering small but wholesome yummy beef tacos with optional guacamole, salsa and other dips. In keeping with the highly successful and award winning farmers market Friday Brunch that the Ritz offers in Lagoon, there was a healthy selection of seasonal salads to include; Greek, Italian caprese and ceasar. We found ourselves munching on the air dried beef bresaola with unanimous ‘umming’ and ‘ahhing’. The sushi selection was displayed beautifully allowing those seafood lovers amongst us to savour such delicacies. The Indian specialities were the strongest station to represent the Asian part of the world. Street food is the vibe that they are going for here and the pav bhajis were insanely good with the chef dolloping on complimentary chutneys. Be sure not to make a mess when you bite into them! Other sections to look out for include the Turkish stand with some Tavuk doner which are Turkey’s equivalent of a chicken shawarma. The English will be happy to see a roast beef carving station and lamb lovers should make there way over to the impressive hand carved lamb ouzi station. We haven’t even mentioned the sweetest part yet, quite literally. There is seasonal fresh fruit, Turkish ice cream and Turkish delight, Arabic sweets and classic desserts like umm ali. Now, if there is anything that is sure to get all chocoholics in a frenzy, well, it is the chocolate and dessert display showcasing the chocolate fountain glistening as pride-of-place. If you don’t like chocolate, well, it’s awfully fun to look at especially when you see kids’ faces lighting up as they dunk their marshmallows into the flowing fountain! After all, children under 5 dine for free but somethings, like this, are simply priceless. For more information please call +974 4484 8000

THE MASTERPIECE FACTORY. THERE AR E SPORTS CARS AND T HE N T HE R E I S TH E FERRARI 488 SP I DE R.

A

s avid car enthusiasts and seasoned test drivers, we at Ohlala have the privilege of spending quality time behind some of the finest wheels on offer. Every once and a while however, we get to experience something truly magnificent, something a cut above the rest. Although our intentions are not to instil jealousy into the hearts’ of our readers, the following statement may achieve just that. This month, we experienced the Ferrari 488 Spider and it was even better than we could have imagined. The Ferrari 488 Spider marks a return to the classic Ferrari model and she looks fantastic! It would be a daunting challenge for any sports car manufacturer to produce such a flawless work of automobile art. It is obvious the exterior design is completely performance orientated, with highly efficient aerodynamics that still manage to retain the pure lines synonymous with the Ferrari brand. The sculptural flanks are key to its character with the large signature air intake scallop divided into two sections by a splitter, paying homage to the original 308 GTS. A dual grille opening characterises the front of the vehicle which directs air into the two radiators. A double front spoiler is also present for aerodynamic reasons. The bonnet itself has a pronounced, raised central section and two side channels. These channels have two functions. The first is to make the car’s appearance sportier in nature and the second is to direct air from the two hidden vents in the bumper. A blown spoiler dominates the rear of the vehicle, along with the large air vents present to further improve aerodynamics. The new exhaust tailpipes add to the sense of power and performance exuded from this masterful creation. All in all, it would be extremely difficult to build a better looking vehicle.

“It would be a daunting challenge for any sports car manufacturer to produce such a flawless work of automobile art.”

Carefully sliding into the cockpit styled interior, one immediately feels as if they are on the starting grid at a Formula One event. This motor vehicle offers nothing less than the perfect balance of style, quality, functionality and sportiness. The entire layout is driver oriented, ensuring every function of the vehicle is easily at hand and ready to be implemented. A new Sport infotainment system ensures the simple navigation of available features. Only the very finest of materials and craftsmanship can be seen in this sports car. After careful inspection we could not find one feature we would have altered or added. In truth, several articles could be written on the interior of this vehicle alone, but there is no substitute for the real experience. The performance of this car was however the most impressive aspect of all. Our first drive entailed a trip around Qatar. This long and wide highway stretches for miles and we took advantage of the space to put her through her paces. The all-new 3902 cc V8 turbo engine is a scary beast. There is far too much power available to test on any road and we were hesitant to push her to even half of her capabilities. This speed machine goes from 0 – 100km/h in just three seconds and has a top speed of 330km/h! Fortunately, the carbon ceramic brakes are more than up to the task and the impeccable grip on offer ensures one is in control of the experience. Our next excursion was around The Pearl. Considered one of the finest locations in Doha, it was the perfect location to test the Spider’s handling abilities. If we were to provide one word to describe the experience, it would have to be, smooth. Every curve and feature of this car has been designed to ensure a perfect ride. This Ferrari is incredibly responsive and carves through the roads like a slalom skier carves through the snow. She feels light, powerful and capable. It was only once we exited the vehicle that we realised our cheeks ached from the permanent ear-to-ear smile this experience had provided. This car screams success and wealth. If you are someone looking for the ultimate sports car experience, you need not look any further than the Ferrari 488 Spider. www.ohlala-magazine.com

MISS Ohlala

OUT OF THIS WORLD Miss Ohlala’s ramblings of why she feels like she is on another planet in lieu of today’s ever changing persona.

There’s no point ‘beating around the bush’ as it is important to get directly to the point, or, so I find myself regularly paraphrasing when I’m in a rather awkward predicament when other people mercilessly freeload their ‘issues’ upon me. I thought I’d signed up with that with my partner, haven’t I been punished enough!? Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got good ears (albeit small) to take on such an ordeal, but, what I find rather questionable is how belittling it is to call ourselves the “supreme human race”, the advanced species of planet earth who choose to use their conscious abilities, that allow them to question and reason, to go to merciless battle with one another, while chuckling at the ‘immature’ ‘barbaric’ behaviour displayed by other animals that we fight so hard to distinguish ourselves from as we mimic them free handedly. It’s sad that the majority of people won’t bother reading this. It’s too long and not discussing turning up or relationship drama or some pointless event that I’ve endured today. I’m talking about something that a lot of us don’t care to question and I’m curious about why that is. Why is it so hard for our intelligent race to actually care about the sustainability of our earth and what we’re actually doing here and where exactly ‘here’ is? Why are we so concerned about who’s dating who, or who decides to swap their gender and why? I don’t care 98

www.ohlala-magazine.com

about how many doughnuts Beyonce can lick and I certainly do not care about committing any “sins”, aka random acts that someone somewhere decided were wrong and that everyone else should think they’re wrong too. I don’t understand why so many of us choose to be ignorant, just to feel safe, and to feel importance. Why we feel the need to project a particular image to the outside world throughout the realms of social media is beyond me. Why do we have this overriding need to impress other people, people we don’t know, and for what? To feel better? I know from personal experience that scrolling through said platforms are a recipe for anxiety. Keep your standardised test results and your straight “A” transcripts to yourselves and as you look them over and feel proud of yourself, remember that those A’s hail from a man-made alphabet, those numbers that make up your scores, belong to a theoretically man-made conceptual system which we have developed to consciously evaluate the world around us. Most importantly, remember that your magnificent transcript and wonderful achievements still don’t answer the who, what, where, when and why of your entire existence. But I’m sure we can all manage to make one up out of laziness. This is why I can’t befriend the average teenager. *eyeroll* So, I suppose what I’m saying is...let’s make a conscious effort to be more present in our actual lives.
