I
t used to be that statement necklaces were what defined my style. Every special occasion: birthdays, the all-important name’s day (my Greek side), passing my driver’s test and any other reason to give gifts, saw yet another Bohemian imbued, endlessly embroidered necklace added to my burgeoning collection of junk jewels. I was completely obsessed, to put it mildly. If it didn’t have a chunky core, it wasn’t going around my neck. And it wasn’t just my décolletage that was decorated; every patch of skin was adorned with rings, bracelets and earrings – airport security was always fun for all involved. As much as I love an in-your-face necklace, I’m now a convert. A few years ago, I started to embrace the barely-there necklace – my hunchback thanked me for it. I shook off the shackles of my youthful (and kitschy) penchant for gratuitous accessories and found a subtle sexiness in minimal jewellery. I’ll always have time for the glamour of a dazzling piece of jewellery but I now realise how even the littlest of things have the most impact sometimes. Whatever your choice of accessories, they perfectly articulate the drama, power, sensuality and playfulness of the wearer. You’ll find our issue offers a complete guide on the it-pieces to buy, how to wear them and why you should go outside the box, too. And while exploring the fresh-from-the-catwalk knowledge of this season’s accessories, we interview blogger turned designer, Anine Bing as well as Middle Eastern icon, Noor Fares and the irresistible sisters behind Kamushki. Lastly, as the final chapter of the fashion weeks closed last month, I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed being in Paris again this season. But beyond the thrills and frills of fashion, my stay at the Hotel Sofitel Paris Le Faubourg, in the sartorial epicentre of the city of lights, shone oh so bright.

November & Other Stories...
November is by far one of my favourite months of the year. Its cosy atmosphere and the fact that we get closer and closer to the festive holidays, makes everything ten times better. This month, being filled with festivities already and gearing up for a great season ahead, we visited numerous restaurants for our monthly chic eats. I personally recommended going to Al Dana Restaurant; with a welcoming atmosphere, the venue surprised me with its decadent seafood menu and (thankfully) reasonable prices. And yet, when I thought that’s the best Doha could offer in the foodie department, La Piazza was a major highlight of the month with affordable promotions and exquisite Italian dishes. But enough with all the food, for those who are on the road for great and clear skin, we hit Four Seasons Doha Hotel for a luxurious facial with Biologique Rechercher – a true gem for all skin care aficionados. And because it’s our big accessories edit this month, we sat with Giancarlo Petriglia for a quick chat on his luxurious handbags and inspirations. You can purchase all of his whimsical designs at Per Lei Couture. And last but not least, the Heya Arabian Fashion Exhibition happened. We were there to see all the magical designs by prominent GCC fashion designers. If you missed it, that’s OK because we caught up with two Qatari brands that are paving the way in the fashion industry with their luxurious goods.

Piece by Piece Lebanon has always been synonymous with strong designers. When it comes to fashion, the Lebanese have it naturally. Noor Fares is no exception. In fact, she represents the Middle Eastern designer who approaches their craft with a sense of preserving cultural roots but with international vision. From a young age Noor was drawn to jewellery via her mother and grandmother’s astute sense of style. Now, she is at the helm of her eponymous brand which sees superb sculptural designs steeped in geometry and finesse. Having grown up in Paris, it’s evident she has that delicate flair so emblematic of Parisian fashion sensibility. But her heritage never goes unnoticed. It’s what allows intrigue to spark.

How has your background in Paris, THE style capital of the world, informed your love for jewellery and why you started your collections? Paris has such a rich culture and growing up there allowed me to be introduced to the arts from a very young age. My aunt and mother are very creative and gave me my first foray into the world of design. From this I started making bespoke jewellery for friends and family that later turned into the Noor Fares brand we know today. You grew up surrounded by strong women like your mother. How did she accessorise? My mother has a wonderful sense of style and alters pieces to match it all the time. She will often wear lots of layers of necklaces along with a statement pair of earrings. Do you have a most treasured item in your personal jewellery collection? My grandmother’s engagement ring is very special to me. Tell us about the creative inspiration for your collections? I spend a few months making mood boards and researching my inspiration before applying it to designs. It is often whilst travelling that I am at my most creative, so I return home and put my ideas in motion. What materials do you love using? I love discovering new materials. For ‘The Fly Me to the Moon’ collection I launch a series of new material earrings twice a year. We currently have over 30 different materials that we use. At the moment I really love Opal and Topaz.
“Jewellery can be viewed as objects of art in the same way that buildings are” Is there anything new you’d like to try and use? Something unusual and unexpected, perhaps? Yes, but you’ll have to wait and see! Jewellery is a lot more architectural and geometric nowadays. Why do you think that is? I think that architecture nowadays is built with humans in mind, in terms of how it will affect the people who view it or live/work inside it, so it becomes something inspiring. I also feel that jewellery can be viewed as mini sculptures or objects of art in the same way that buildings are. Where would you say Noor Fares sits between minimalism and standout statement pieces? I try to create pieces with clean geometric lines but add colour to ensure it makes an impact. What’s your future vision for the brand? I hope to continue to design collections that women want to wear and to inspire young designers to follow their dreams. Jewellery pieces from the Akasha collection 56

Blogger to brand
Anine Bing is one to watch. The L.A. dwelling, Scandinavian native is a style influencer who can balance it all. Her world consists of many roles: mother, designer, blogger and all round fabulous person – she’s our kind of woman. Among her many collections is her jewellery line which celebrates her minimalist roots. We talk to the ethereal, can-do-anythingdesigner about her inspiration for her jewellery and the main differences between Scandinavian and Middle Eastern style How did you go from blogger to full-fledged brand? It has been a natural step combining the two worlds. When I started the brand I used social media to promote it and throughout the years the collection has grown into becoming a full-scale brand. Why do you think barely-there jewellery has as much appeal as it’s got? I love to layer jewellery and with delicate pieces it’s possible to wear multiple rings, bracelets and necklaces. It gives room to be playful with your jewellery, which I really like. What was the inspiration for your jewellery collection? My grandmother loved jewellery and she has always been a great source of inspiration for me. I also love going to flea markets to look for vintage pieces. What are your key pieces from the collection? I’m in love with the beaded necklace from this year’s autumn collection. It adds so much personality to an outfit. Another piece that I really enjoy is the gold ring with a diamond star – I wear it on my pinkie finger. What similarities are there, do you think, between Scandinavian and Middle Eastern fashion? I feel like both people from Scandinavia and the Middle East have really proud historic cultures that we like to showcase through fashion. We are thorough with the fabrics we use and how we combine and layer different silhouettes and textures. Why do you think Middle Eastern women will take to your minimalist jewellery? I’m proud of the high quality and the fact that all pieces are handcrafted here in L.A. I also think that the design is appealing and that they are easy to mix in with other jewellery pieces.
What’s the main difference in designing clothes versus jewellery in terms of the process and how much you enjoy it? I love them both equally. I feel jewellery is like the icing on the cake to an outfit and that a great piece of jewellery can make a simple outfit stand out. The process is quite similar in the sense that I start by creating a mood board with pieces that I would like to be included in the line. My team and I put together sketches and show them to our local jeweller who then makes samples that I can try on and make changes to. Once approved we go into production and launch on the website. Shop the collection: aninebing.com

sister act When a wishbone is your statement piece, you’re going to court good attention. We speak with sisters Mariam and Dania Sawedeg about their brain child: Kamushki and how their Libyan roots manifest in their collection
What does Kamushki mean? It means precious stones in Russian. We started off by being inspired by the dazzling Russian culture and looking back in time at the Romano family and how they had beautiful authentic jewels with lots of colours. How do your Libyan roots inspire your collections? We love to incorporate a meaningful story to our jewellery and we have always been fascinated by our own culture. In Libya we are big believers of the evil eye and one of the symbols of protection that breaks the eye is the fish. In our Libyan traditional clothing there is always a big gold fish intertwined within our heavy gold and we tend to gift a bracelet or small pin with a fish when there is a new born. Are there any new shapes, architectural forms or designs that you’re particularly inspired by for Kamushki? We come from a country that was conquered by the Greeks, Romans and at some point by the Turkish Empire and Italians. We believe in architecture as a form of art and history which we always bring into our designs. What kind of woman do you have in mind when designing your collections? Contemporary, chic and courageous women. What’s your jewellery philosophy? We are a storytelling brand; we want our customers to never be afraid to take risks; we want people to feel inspired by wearing our jewellery. kamushki-jewellery.com

Out Of This World
Shell is always a base material for any Nathalie Trad clutch. That and a treasure trove of unique materials which, despite their haphazard source, always seem so effortlessly combined. As she leaves behind Miami’s south beach from her last collection, she’s gone out into the universe with Utopia 2.0. Questioning the more surreal notions of life as we know it, this collection is dramatic, full of accents and more than ever, edgy. Follow the narrative of Utopia 2.0 and take in the mesmeric aesthetics “We set off from an almost uninhabitable earth on an exploratory voyage through a wormhole, through space, through time, across the cosmos, emerging at the other end, on the outer edge of the Milky Way”

Beauty Insight Beauty means harmony, good vibes, and positivity. There is no stereotype. It’s more about everything; the way

H
aving worked in the industry for so long and with prominent people, why did you decide to venture in the makeup industry? I just love art in general; I used to paint. I don’t know I just had this interested in beautifying. I love interior design, fashion, and sketching. Do you still paint? Not anymore, maybe because I paint [faces] all day long. I was never a painter. I used to sketch here and there. You decided to pair up with famous illustrator, Liselotte Watkins, how did that come about? Basically this was suggested by the graphic designer as we were re-branding, and I wanted a persona that represented the Arab woman, but who was also global. We approached her and she accepted. Your brand is well known for the butterflies in the logo, why is this? I love butterflies and I like to see women as butterflies. What does beauty represent to you? Beauty means harmony, good vibes, and
positivity. There is no stereotype. It’s more about everything; the way you represent yourself, the way you dress, it’s an all. You started Bassam Fattouh cosmetics back in 2010, how did that come about? It’s every makeup artist’s dream. As a makeup artist we offer a service, and for me to go international I wanted to come along with a brand and product that I could export to the world; just like NARS, an international makeup brand that has gone big. Who inspires you? Everything inspires me really. Honestly I look up to many people, I don’t believe in idols but I believe in inspiration. For example, Elie Saab, a Lebanese designer who inspires me a lot. How would you describe your work? It’s my passion, I’m lucky to work in something that I really love – it’s my hobby. What tips do you have for emerging makeup artists? Believe in yourself; follow your intuition and feelings. But most importantly work with
your hand, mind and heart. Has there been a makeup step that was difficult to master? Nothing. Honestly, nothing! What’s your favourite part of the makeup process? Believe me it’s a harmony; everything goes hand in hand for a flawless finish. You must master every step. But it will depend from face to face, and then you enhance it. Why have you paired up with Salam Stores for this super successful Masterclass for women? Because it’s our distributor, you can get our products there and we have a wonderful partnership. What future projects have you got in the pipeline? Many! We have so many launches for the future; we just launched our contour palette called Blur Kit. It’s to tone down the contour pandemonium going around on social media, malls and Instagram. I want to take contouring to another level because it’s supposed to be blurred and natural. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Beauty Column Use a moisturising cleanser
If you only make one change to your skin-care routine, change up your face wash. Swapping a foaming cleanser for a creamy one is a valuable step to help skin adjust to colder, drier weather. This will ensure you don’t strip your skin of valuable oils as you cleanse. Typically cream or oil-based cleansers are the go-to and they will still work just as well to remove make-up and get your skin clean. We love NUXE Cleansing Milk with Rose Petals.
Boost your exfoliation
This goes for your body and your face. The combination of dry air and hot showers will really dry your skin out so it’s super important to scrub away the dead skin cells at least twice a week. You can also mix your cleanser with a small amount of an exfoliator for a more gentle scrub if your skin is sensitive. Fresh skin cells are better able to absorb products, giving you more bang for your skincare buck. There’s no point putting your beautiful La Mer face cream onto skin that isn’t exfoliated. That is a beauty crime and you may as well be pouring it down the sink. Try Rub Rub Rub Shower Scrub from LUSH for your body and Filorga’s Scrub & Mask for your face.
Make serums your new BFF
winter is coming
Angela Beitz explains the importance of changing up your beauty routine for the cooler months It’s that glorious time
in the Gulf where the temperatures have finally dropped and we’re heading into winter. Being able to sit outside and wear a light cashmere sweater is now top of mind and everyone’s moods have instantly changed. But in terms of beauty, winter can wreak havoc on your skin the same way that the summer can. So no matter what skincare you are using now, you need to change your regime.
There’s nothing better than the feeling of liquid serums sinking into your skin, especially if you’ve been exfoliating in the aforementioned way. If you’ve never used a serum before (shame on you) it’s basically a lightweight moisturiser that penetrates deeper into your skin by delivering active ingredients. I love a good Vitamin C serum followed by an Anti-Ageing serum especially when applied before bedtime so it can do its thing while you get your beauty sleep. Go for Super Corrective Serum from Shiseido and Advanced Night Repair from Estée Lauder.
Moisturise like your life depends on it
Look for products that are designed to hydrate and will feed your complexion with moisture for 24 hours. You may also need to switch to a heavier cream especially at night so your skin can rejuvenate itself. It’s essential to use hydration masks (twice a week is perfect) and be sure to slather on body cream as soon as you step out of the shower. Try Super Supreme Body Butter from Sephora, Abeille Royale Cream from Guerlain and Skin Republic Sheet Masks.
Use sunscreen
It’s easy to become lazy when it comes to winter and sunscreen. You can still burn and cause damage to your skin (especially in this region) so you won’t do yourself any favours if you ignore sun protection in winter. CC Creams are fabulous for winter as they help correct, soothe, moisturise, protect and perfect the complexion. We live by Clarins Mineral Sunscreen and CHANEL CC Cream Spf 50. www.ohlala-magazine.com

The High Life Georgie Bradley stays in a stylish retreat and experiences the eternal allure of Paris If you were to equate Paris’ properties in terms of a fashion show seating arrangement, the Sofitel Paris Le Faubourg is all FROW. Not only does it sit within skipping distance to Place de la Concorde, but the sisterhood of Dior, Chanel, Gucci and co, (where only the well-heeled prance) skirt around the 1st arrondisement – the most prestigious of all arrondisements, at that. Being on Rue Boissy d’Anglas, the hotel benefits from a plethora of surrounding shops, some quietly quaint on a side street, some more gregarious in their real estate on the glittery Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Due to the proximity to the U.S. Embassy and Élysée Palace, the official residence to the French president, the hotel falls on one of the safest streets in Paris. Additionally too, the section of Rue Boissy d’Anglas where the hotel is found, is semi-pedestrianised with armed police officers, so you’re in good hands here. What’s even better is how discreet the hotel appears from the outside. Despite it being the flagship Sofitel property within the Accor Group, the hotel retains a lowlevel elite status – the best ones always do. After a slick check-in and making my way to a perfectly poised room, I’m made aware of the fact that I’ll be sleeping on MyBed® bedding designed by Pierre-Yves Rochon and that the décor was conceptualised by Didier Gomez who took the reigns during the refurbishment a few years ago. Normally I cast these 86

sorts of details aside by default as my general hotellery knowledge is nowhere near five-star-level to be able to decipher names in the industry – but all I needed to do was plant myself on the edge of the bed to know these designers are in the top ranks. You essentially melt into the fibre of the bed, as the plump duvet slowly envelops you with its cloud-like cushiness. There’s an overall period polish to the room but with a feast of 21st century fixtures. The spotlights over the bed create a dreamy halo around the mountain of pillows and illuminate the debonair painting sitting directly above the head, playing off the 18th century classicism backdrop of the hotel. The crisp white and powder blue colour scheme is an enchanting mix, one that leaves you feeling relaxed and allows for a peaceful sleep. The window looks out onto an interior courtyard filled with pretty plants, paying homage to the true spirit of chic Paris. The bathroom has a sumptuous bath, complete with a line of Hermès toiletries including shower gels, shampoo, hair conditioner and body lotion. The marbled floors look and feel prestigious, making me want to spend more time than I need in
“There’s an overall period polish to the room but with a feast of 21st century fixtures” the plush bathroom. The jewel in the hotel’s crown is the lobby area where you’ll find a mini, albeit rather scene-stealing mannequin display of cascading gowns brought in from the Fédération Française de la Couture where the microscopic needlework shows off the utmost technical prowess and confirms couture’s breathtaking status in the world of fashion. Being Fashion Week, it only seems appropriate to bring that glamour into the hotel; it is indeed, a very fine touch. The lobby’s skylight (fantastically designed by Gomez) bathes the display in a warm and soft light, come rain or shine, and gives the space an added smattering of elegance. Further from the lobby is a chic old-world library nook with coffee table books related to fashion, history and travel. I while away several blissful hours www.ohlala-magazine.com

“The menu offers the finest in French cuisine presented with contemporary flair against the exceptionally sophisticated space” scrolling through daily feeds of the latest from the fashion world while taking thick sips of a luxurious hot chocolate. The warm brown tones of the library are homely and make you feel cocooned in a vintage film set, steeped in oodles of history. It’s the kind of setting which you’d see sprawled across several pages in a glorious hardback art deco book full of interior design inspiration. There’s plenty of substance in the style in every corner of the hotel, so thoughtfully executed, reminding you why Paris is a city of timeless beauty. Add to that, Yannick Alléno lends his three-Michelin star skills to the hotel’s STAY Faubourg restaurant, an urban dining concept which sees an irresistible pastry library in the centre of the restaurant where you’ll find the most decadent and delicate macaroons placed in rows of rainbow order. The menu offers the finest in French cuisine presented with contemporary flair against the exceptionally sophisticated space. I have my breakfast in the restaurant every morning where the elegance of a continental breakfast is fortified by the sprightly staff offering newspapers, coffee or juice to go with my buttery croissant(s). A multitude of sins take place in this restaurant, but it’s Paris; so naturally all clean eating plans are consciously dashed. After a three-night stay, it’s hard to leave behind the convenience and relief of staying in a hotel that offers exemplary service and a runway retreat away from the crowds. Given the hotel’s haute couture sensibilities and distinct Parisian charm, the Sofitel Paris Le Faubourg will always be on trend in my books. 88

A Voyage Within A Voyage In one of the most talked about hotels in Paris, Bridget Gleeson embarks on an unparalleled exotic journey Perfectly located in the heart of the chicest part of town,
Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré and surrounded by luxury boutiques, haute couture ateliers and a street away from the presidential palace, the award-winning Buddha Bar Hotel Paris is truly an experience that you won’t be forgetting anytime soon. If you’re visiting Paris to shop, this hotel should be at the top of your list for places to stay, for it offers a plethora of experiences beyond what already lies outside the hotel’s parameters. Its trademark, ‘voyage within a voyage’ philosophy gives you the most personalised hotel stay with many sensory delights along the way. The journey begins with the iconic red glass ‘Buddha Bar’ lanterns lining the street towards the hotel, which make the hotel appear like an urban temple. Upon entering the hotel you are immediately transported to another world with cherry blossom trees flanking the entrance. We are welcomed at the door with true Asian hospitality (think warm smiles and gentle manners) making us feel at home and comfortable at the onset. From the beautiful golden dragon motif signifying protection that follows you around the hotel, to the chain mail covering the walls and the stunning bright yellow pleated silk fabric adorning the hallways, the blend of neo-Asian and

French traditional décor ensures that this is not your typical Parisian chateau! The rooms are a haven of serenity, with striking red, black and gold furniture, decadent fabrics, lush bed linens and incredible attention to detail while following the neo-Asian theme which truly gives the feeling of an oasis within the city. The bathroom is in one word: luxurious. The bathtub alone is a design unlike anything seen before, a large black circular tub surrounded by the protective dragon motif in gold-mosaicked tiles. The entire space is so striking it takes several rounds to drink in all the detail as the hotel definitely doesn’t skimp on its Oriental intrigue meets Parisian glamour narrative because every inch of the grounds, be it in the rooms or in the restaurants, adhere to this most intricate story – one that you won’t find anywhere else in Paris. Staying here allows for the ultimate escape from what you know, and we definitely indulged in every aspect of the room alone. Of course the famous Buddha Bar’s around the world are renowned for their cocktails, food and music which are at your disposal throughout the day while staying at the hotel. A must try is the new ‘4 elements’ Sunday brunch concept held in the outdoor courtyard at the Le Vraymonde Restaurant. The courtyard is a picture-perfect setting full of delicious detail that are typical to Parisian chic but with a notable twist of bold orange and rouge palettes, brilliantly blending the Western and Eastern vibes. Delve into an inspiring array of cuisines and flavours from the buffet, or order from the a la carte menu of your choosing, where you’ll find anything from sushi to classic French dishes - you are sure to be delighted and spoiled for www.ohlala-magazine.com

“The blend of neo-Asian and French traditional décor ensures that this is not your typical Parisian chateau” choice. What’s more is the presentation of every dish (if the images weren’t evidence enough) is pure art. Gastronomy runs in the blood of the French; food is not simply to be eaten but to be admired and spoken about. You’ll certainly have some conversation-starting meals at any one of Buddha Bar’s outlets. The key is to let go of your inhibitions and sample the most wildly different and perhaps unpronounceable dish; that way you are embodying the spirit of the voyage. And of course being in France, the wine selections are paired with your brunch by the in house sommelier. This is where your Buddha Bar journey gets wonderfully personal. The attention to the guest experience at this point proves this property is deserving of every accolade it has received. After enjoying a day out strolling to Paris’ iconic landmarks like the Louvre and the Grand Palais that are only a short walk away, it’s best to treat yourself to one of the tantalising cocktail creations in the intimate setting of Le Qu4tre lounge bar, which we definitely did! Voted the Best Bar in Europe for 2014-2015, you are sure to be mesmerised by the dexterous mixologists who can create a rainbow of cocktails in a spell-binding performance against the sounds of one of the world famous in-residence sound artists who provide the perfect soundtrack to your evening. It’s one of those nights which you want to repeat again, knowing that the next time will be totally different and unique but equally as exotic as the first time. Staying in the Buddha Bar hotel, you really have the feeling that you have had two journeys in one, experiencing Paris at its finest while relaxing in an Asian paradise. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Authentic Flavours The Peninsula Paris’ Lili restaurant boasts gastronomic greatness and visual splendour in one. Bridget Gleeson indulges in a spectacular spread of Oriental favourites The historical Peninsula Paris plays host to the beautifully designed and opulent Lili, an extravagant restaurant serving the finest Cantonese cuisine in Paris. With décor reminiscent of the Ming Dynasty and inspired by the drama of Chinese and French opera, Lili transports you to a bygone era, sweeping you away from the classic Parisian architecture of the Peninsula to a beautiful Chinese theatre. Upon arrival we were escorted down the hallway to private dining booths shrouded in dark lacquered wood and heavy fabrics giving a sense of intimacy to each table. We were seated in some amazing cage-like chairs and began to soak in the incredible design of Lili. You’re exposed to a mix of classic French ceilings with cherubs looking over you, large Asian lanterns and artworks, huge tasselled canopies and intricate woodcarvings. The degustation menu was unpacked for us: a thoughtfully curated experience including: Cantonese cuisine, classic dishes and new creations mixed in to give you a precise and complete journey. We began our eight-course meal with the squid ink Ha Kao, a beautiful shining black dumpling served in its own silver bowl. The singular piece is an explosion of incredible flavour and sets the scene for the gastronomic delights to come! Next was the selection of dim sum. Each piece had such strong flavours and textures in their own right but still managed to meld effortlessly together. Other highlights were the sea bass cooked to absolute perfection and interestingly paired with a light red wine by the sommelier. The exciting braised abalone, which is finely sliced and paired with a flavour packed sauce, is another starring dish to note. The most outstanding dish of the evening however, was the roasted Peking duck: the most tender and flavourful duck we had ever tasted before, artfully presented with assorted mixed crudité (an off-piste but interesting variety of rock melon and red pepper) placed inside each wrap. The combination of equally defined sweet and savoury layers makes it a memorable dish. Finally, our superstar waiter served us our impeccably formed pear covered in sesame seeds, made of a deep fired sesame ball filled with custard, fresh mango pudding and a flaky egg tart. As far as desserts go, we went out with a bang. But what really sealed our delectable night was when the sommelier presented us with an incredible sake, bright yellow in colour, with an intense fruity taste – just amazing. The food alone is fantastic at Lili but the combination of the décor, the incredible staff and the historical significance of the Peninsula Paris made this a magical meal in the city of lights. 94

Tastes of home Another fine dining choice is the Peninsula Paris’ Le Lobby. Georgie Bradley samples the Katara specialties on the menu that offer a contemporary twist to Middle Eastern cuisine with a dollop of olive oil, is the ideal accompaniment to the fragrant rice. Deconstructing it layer by layer, you’ll find it’s a very faithful version of what you have at home. Our Sago dessert was worthy of many talking points. Being luscious sweet pudding spiced with saffron and cardamom, it arrived near piping hot, but not prohibitively so. The caramelised walnuts perched on top gave a welcomed crunch to the jelly consistency of the pudding. In all, you’ll find it’s the kind of dessert that is ostentatious without being too overbearing – it’s a lot lighter than it appears. For something extra special in Paris, Le Lobby provides a unique experience where a touch of nostalgia will hit you along the way.
Before I even set foot in the Peninsula Paris’ all-day dining restaurant, Le Lobby, I knew from the supercars and flash folk filing into the majestic-cum-modern hotel, that this property meets the glamour-seeking standards of the Middle East to a fault. With a burgeoning clientele from our shores, it doesn’t surprise me that the hotel is ticking all the necessary boxes to accommodate the most discerning luxury travellers. Beyond having a list of regional TV channels from the Gulf available in each room, the hotel is winning over its guests with its well-chosen ‘Katara Specialty’ dishes added onto Le Lobby’s menu. Le Lobby is as regal as it is charming with its sky-high ceilings and glittery chandelier. Part Parisian, part Oriental, the restaurant is airy and cosy at the same time. Despite being an all-day dining restaurant, you’ll notice the clientele dress to the nines. We began with a very zingy Saumon Bio - organic salmon served in Parisian style, diced vegetable salad with herbs and tomato water. The salmon was butter-soft to bite into and had a superb, almost playful slipperiness to it. It was all lipsmack and happiness for starters. The Katara Specialties consist of the Garish de Gambas which includes: Jerresh Rebian, prawns served with spelt seeds and Qatari spices. Built up on a mound of spelt, the prawns sit large and kingly. The endless sea of spelt has fullness to its taste, courtesy of it being a species of wheat, while the prawns are as succulent as they come. All the ingredients come together in perfect harmony, giving you a true taste of the Middle East – presented in the most refined way. One of my favourite comfort foods in the Middle East is the rice-heavy Majboos. At Le Lobby however, the much-loved dish is given a revival. Majbous au poulet sees a richly spiced mixture of Qatari spices, basmati rice topped with chicken, pine nuts and raisins served with yoghurt. The chicken was unexpectedly crispy but that allowed for a unique and upgraded experience – plentiful pine nuts were littered around the plate while the yoghurt sauce www.ohlala-magazine.com

Culinary Insight
La Piazza From succulent pasta to green and fresh Italian salad, we visit La Piazza to discover a true hidden gem in Souq Waqif
L
a Piazza has enjoyed a long-standing reputation at Souq Waqif. If you happen to stroll around, especially with the beautiful weather we can look forward to, then you’re in for a treat. Located in the heart of the city, lost in the midst of old-time Doha, dining in the middle of this kind of setting, is alluring – it is for us at least. Approaching our experience with much eagerness, we came prepared for the feast of all Italian feasts. As we arrived we couldn’t help but appreciate the magnificently high ceilings next to the Arabic influenced ornate décor. It’s a East meets West kind of vibe. With a palatial fountain in the middle of the restaurant, you definitely feel the grandness of it all – if you’re a newcomer you’ll be swept away, if you’re used to this kind of sophisticated dining experience, it will be second nature to you. And yet, despite its size, the heartwarming staff create an overall cosy feeling. We meet Chef Francesco who is now at the helm of the venue. Coming from Rome, Italy, it was no surprise he opened up with his friendly and charismatic culinary guidance to help us choose our first dish. We started off with something light, so we opted for a green and healthy salad, aptly named: La Piazza salad. With nuts, toasted bread, cheese and rucola leaf, the salad offers a mix of freshness and many tastes. Our favourite element of it was the salty bite paired with oozing olive oil. If you’re a healthy eater, this is a dish we highly recommend. If like us you enjoy some wholesomely good, tasty pasta, then we recommend: Maccheroni Cacio e Pepe. Chef Francesco kindly prepared this ultimate traditional dish for us. If the name sounds too technical, it’s simply pasta with cheese and pepper. The dish offers a creamy texture with a salty and tangy finish. But if you’re not feeling pasta on the day and want a definitively meaty meal, opt for the succulent steak accompanied with a perfectly paired warm potato gratin. As the venue got busier with visitors and business people coming in, we noticed how the restaurant delivers to a very diverse community. But what got our seal of approval was the venue’s latest promotion of all you can eat pasta and pizza for only QR65; the Sunday-Thursday promotion is on from 12 until 4pm. ou can’t have good
if you don’t have healthy skin; this is a motto I live by. Us women are always under the impression that facials and buying good expensive face creams are just for rich people. I’m telling you now, don’t fall for it. Makeup is to purely enhance facial features and buying a good night cream is pretty much vital. Think about it this way: creams are like nutrients, the more you feed it to your face – the healthier your skin will look. And if you would spend that same amount to buy a bag, then you should definitely spend it on a serum, night cream, or toner. If you don’t believe me, take it from the Japanese, Koreans and other advanced beauty know-hows - they all have one common denominator – skin is their number one priority. From brighteners to controlling big pores, you name it, they know it all. Having said all of the above, understanding the different creams, facials and what suits each skin type, is something we learn with time. Having recently visited Four Seasons Doha
Gravity 100 www.ohlala-magazine.com
Hotel to get the Biologique Rechercher facial which was pretty much a game-changer – even by my beauty regime standards - it proved to be one of the most informative experiences I’ve come across. Introducing one of the oldest cult-beauty products in the market with a high concentration of ingredients, this luxurious and very exclusive range is now available in Doha. I was lucky enough to get a facial by one of the hotel’s esthetician, where she explained what the facial is all about and its benefits. From a 60 minute to a 2-hour session, you can pick and tailor your own facial to your skin’s need. Starting off with a skin analysis – that checks your skin’s elasticity, pigmentation, hydrations and so forth – it helps the esthetician for an overall view of what products to use and maximize results. One thing to keep in mind, the entire facial consists of cold-iced products to preserve the structure of its active ingredients. So what is so special about these products, the facial and beauty regime? It brings elasticity back to the skin, kicks the collagen up a notch, adds glow to dull looking skin and helps with wrinkles, dark spots and acne. If you still don’t believe me, the brand is so niche it is near impossible to get it in your local pharmacy. It is that strong and effective. Luckily for you and me, Four Seasons Doha Hotel has stocked up and now sells the range, if you want to spend a dime or two. At the end of my fabulous facial, I definitely did. Kizlar Design created by three Qatari sisters, produced lots of noise with their sophisticated designs at the HEYA Arabian Fashion Exhibition. Aisha Al Mohannadi sat with Ohlala and gave an insight on the brand, style and Qatar’s fashion trends
How did the brand come to life?
We started by designing our own clothes, dresses and Abayas, to which people would asked about our designs. From there, we started thinking to establish our own line, business, and to represent our different unique style. Who is your biggest inspiration when designing? As children, our mother was our biggest inspiration. We saw her as the most elegant person and we really noticed the way she dressed. She inspired us to be fashionable and taught us how to dress accordingly. What are your views on Qatar’s fashion trends? The trends are with a modern approach and unique styles that are attention-grabbers. A Qatari woman is amongst the trendiest of women in the Gulf and wider Arab world. What are your favourite trends at the moment? The use of a unique fabric, which is trendy at any given time. Which is your favourite fashion capital: New York, London, Milan, or Paris? Each capital is unique with its own atmosphere. Our favourite and close to our heart, is New York. What kind of woman do you design for? We design for elegant, unique, powerful and feminine ladies. In addition to that, our line is for special occasions, parties, weddings and daily wear. We offer impeccable designs and quality to those ladies who search for uniqueness that will make her stand out from the rest. Do you prefer to mix colours or go monochrome? Mix colours! It also depends on the season and on the cut and trend. Do you prefer vintage or something brand new? Both actually. It depends on the occasion; what is required and its mood. Also, new brands are mixing vintage designs with their new designs to accomplish something different. Why has it been important to showcase your designs at the HEYA Exhibition? It’s a great opportunity to showcase our brand to the public, especially at the Heya Exhibition, which is known as a one of the biggest exhibitions in Qatar and in the Gulf. www.ohlala-magazine.com 105

Stay Aqua Calm
A comprehensive solution to sensitive care is now available at Paris Gallery. The advanced skin care range by Swiss Line Dermalab is all you’ll need if you suffer from redness, burning, or tight skin. Now, Force Vitale Aqua-Calm Cream and the Aqua-Calm CC Cream SPF30 is your answer to your problems. Barbara Lacobucci, Swiss Line’s International Training Manager gave us an insight of the products and why you should be purchasing it, right now
Can oily and dry skin types benefit from these products?
The Aqua-Calm cream is more suitable for normal to dry skin, since it has been formulated to reinforce the skin barrier thanks to the ceramides. Therefore it could be too much of nourishment to oily skin. Instead, the Aqua-Calm CC Cream SPF30 is suitable for oily skin, which can be used alone, or applied before a serum if needed. What are some benefits of using the range? Force Vitale Aqua-Calm Cream contains soothing complex and anti-redness complex, while bringing an improved barrier via functional ceramides to strengthen and improve the condition of fragile or stressed skin. It also incorporates the Force Vitale alpine plant extracts and all their anti-oxidant and adaptive benefits. While the Force Vitale Aqua-Calm CC Cream SPF 30 corrects, primes, protects, brightens, moisturises, energises and soothes the skin. It also helps to fortify sensitised skin suffering from a damaged barrier, shielding the skin from negative environmental factors. How do you use it? For FV Aqua-Calm CC Cream SPF 30, it can be used alone as a light day moisturiser for younger skin conditions, or applied after the day for more mature skin. It can also be used as a make-up base before foundation for those seeking additional coverage. For FV Aqua- Calm Cream, apply in the morning and evening (alone), or after applying your specific Swiss line serum. For sun protection and enhanced complexion correction, follow in the morning with the application of Aqua-Calm CC Cream SPF 30. What’s the age range for these products? Since sensitivity is a condition that can affect any age, there is no specific age range. Customers with a mature skin can combine the Aqua-Calm range with the other Swiss line collections. For example, you can use the Cell-shock serum and cream in the morning and evening. While a younger customer, with oily or combination skin could use FV-Aqua-Calm CC Cream alone in the morning and the FV AquaCalm cream in the evening. www.ohlala-magazine.com 107

Forever If a special occasion is coming up and you’re still deciding what to gift, Ebraheem Al Samadi founder of Forever Rose, has all the perfect ideas. The young businessman talks about how he started his own brand, the challenges he has had to overcome and why a Forever Rose is a true gem

aving a passion for business from such an early age, what is the most thrilling part about working in this industry? It’s getting to create a whole family. Of course I have my blood related family, but I truly consider my Forever Rose team as my second family; managers, chief of operations, the delivery drivers, everyone in the company to me is like a brother or sister. What advice would you give to any young businessman? You need to have the right mindset. I believe if you have the right mindset and enter into business for all the right reasons, and of course put a lot of hard work and effort into your endeavor, then opportunities will arise accordingly and doors will open. Forever Rose is one of a kind in its market. How did the idea come up? We have had many different brands under Al Samadi including beauty products, jewellery, F&B outlets. We took on Forever Rose because I just fell in love with the concept of the everlasting rose when I first came across it in England, and I just felt it had so much more potential here in the Middle East as a luxury retailer. When purchasing such a luxurious gem, what can the customer expect? They will fall in love with it. That is the essence of Forever Rose; our business is not only about the physical roses, it is about creating special moments that can be cherished for a lifetime. Forever Rose are roses that do not require water, or sunlight. How were you able to achieve this? It is an all-natural enhancer, which is able to preserve the life of the rose, allowing it to maintain its natural beauty. What can we expect from Forever Rose in the near future? We are planning to open a series of enchanting Forever Rose cafes around the world that will create a 360 degree Forever Rose experience including taste, touch, sight and sound. We are also planning a very exciting expansion into Forever Rose hotels, which will take our hospitality initiative to a new level. What inspiration has kept you motivated? I’m always inspired by my team, seeing them happy, seeing them in a good environment pushes me to want to expand further so that we can continue to provide that same luxury of a safe and happy work environment to as many people as I can.

Milan-based handbag designer, Giancarlo Petriglia is taking over Doha with his funky and whimsical designs. The quirky artist talks inspiration, fashion and Elsa Schiaparelli
What brought you to start designing bags?
I started designing bags because I wanted to convey my personal vision of luxury and beauty in the accessories world. The aim is to make them unique and give life with an extra touch to those who wear them. What’s your favourite bag designed so far? One of my first creations, a little jewel called, ‘The P’ bag and P means Petriglia like his ‘father’. How difficult has it been to break into the fashion industry? I didn’t have any difficult, I studied at the NABA Academy in Milan and graduated with honours, and from there, I immediately started to work with Trussardi as their Artistic Director and personal assistant to Mrs. Trussardi. After spending many years in close contact with leading figures at the Maison Trussardi, I continued my experience in different product designing departments. And for the S/S 12 collection, I presented my first luxury handbags collection. What sets your handbags apart from the rest? The attention I dedicate to every detail; and its design, which is linked to the world of haute couture. Who inspires your creations? Each collection has a story to tell; it is linked to different
sensations, a woman’s personality and cultural diversity. If you weren’t a designer what would you be doing now? I can’t imagine myself in a different role; I’d perhaps be part of a world related to design and creativity. What’s your motto in life? The best is yet to come … Who would your dream collaboration be with? My dream would be to design a collection with Maison of Schiaparelli. Giancarlo Petriglia’s designs are available at Per Lei Couture

Paying attention
Let accessories be the cherry on top of your outfit, says our resident contributor, Pallavi Patil
I’m a great believer in that the key to pulling off a truly stylish outfit Age Appropriateness and packing some fashion punch, lies in the accessories. Here are my helpful tips to matching the perfect accessory with the perfect you:
Complementary Colours
Choose accessories that complement the colour of your outfit and complexion. Matchy matchy isn’t always the answer. If you’re wearing a red dress with red shoes and a red bag, you’ll overdo the look with the addition of red accessories. It’s visually more appealing to see more than one colour, than an abundance of one vibrant colour. One of the innumerable options for your red dress would be emerald earrings, a brown snakeskin clutch and gold strappy sandals. Whenever you’re unsure, metallic colours always come in handy.
Size Matters
The size of the accessories should be proportionate to your size. If you’re a petite person, don’t choose chunky shoes - there will be an imbalance to your overall look. Likewise, if you’re a full-figured woman, don’t wear a skinny belt, it will make you look bigger. Choose accessories that suit your stature.
Just like in clothes, even while choosing accessories you should be mindful of your age. If you wear accessories that appear too juvenile, people might not take you seriously. Similarly, if you dress too conservatively for your age, you are taking away the fun element that you’re entitled to.
Occasion Appropriateness
Always dress the part. Accessories will truly help transform your look from day to night and casual to professional. A simple LBD can look professional with solitaire studs and classic stilettos. Add a statement ring or necklace and swap your heels for strappy sandals and you are all set for a simple yet classy look.
Less is More
There is so much to play with, it’s easy to get carried away. The saying: remove one thing before you step out of the house, is always helpful. When in doubt stick to a paired back, minimal look – you can never go wrong. Pallavi Patil is the Manager at Spa by Clarins at Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl Doha. Miss Ohlala
Karma is best served on a silver platter I knew it. They all come crawling back begging for forgiveness
Raise your hand if one of your ex boyfriends has ever crawled back into your life asking for the ultimate forgiveness, expressing their undying love? It’s safe to say, we all have. And in my case, because they all have done me wrong, they’ve all crawled back pretending to be the modern Shakespeare. To take them back, or not to… that is the question. Truth be told, I enjoy seeing them crawl back, dragging their misery along. For instance, the man who scorned me for over four years (yeah, I know, it took me that long!) begged for over a year and a half, promising an opulent mansion along West Bay and other expensive commodities. I refused it all with no remorse. Subsequently, he began dating this very exotic (to say the least) Dior showroom manager, to which he confessed feeling, “trapped and misunderstood”. Karma. And to make the matter even worse, he is settling and wants to marry her just for the sake of getting married. That marriage will definitely not last. On to my next victim, the English guy, who for over a year attacked me over how my blog, my interest in celebrities and my lack of “intelligent conversations” were a bother to him. Not to mention how he disliked my inability to write “real” content at my workplace. Now, he is one of the editors at LADBible writing about jokes, celebrities, and how aliens are part of the world, creating an absurd amount of online bullying with all the “real” content he creates. Who’s laughing now? And finally the one man who did more damage than all of the above, in such a 130 www.ohlala-magazine.com
short period of time, will forever remain small minded; and by that, I mean, feeding off people’s fears thinking arrogance is the ultimate aphrodisiac. Nasty. And it came as no surprise after our breakup, that the 30 year-old really showed off his maturity by quickly disposing me like a garbage bag and blocked me from all social media platforms – didn’t I graduate from High School seven years ago? But by the looks of it, he had a sudden change of heart and he is now a loyal follower of my whereabouts and Insta Stories. Thank you for your interest – shame the feeling isn’t mutual. But to make the story even juicer, the woman he truly loves (his ex) is in love with someone else and happier in a new relationship. Guess she couldn’t keep up with High School boy drama. To conclude, karma is a nasty thing, especially when you do wrong to heart-welcoming people. Miss Ohlala took a dose of sarcasm, but she truly enjoyed Karma taking the lead while she sipped a Piña Colada under a palm tree…
