I cannot believe it is the month of November already, as I find myself pondering the theory of time once again and allow myself to be crippled by anxiety as I look back at 2019 at all the things that I haven’t achieved. One thing is for sure, there’s always time to talk about social outings, therefore, if you have to attend a wedding this Autumn, consider it a blessing as we have you covered. The season gives you the perfect weather to wear whatever you want, saving you from having to make yet another annoying decision. Embrace longer sleeves without the fear of sweating through silk, wear a silk slip dress with a sleek layer, even better try a lush velvet, moody florals, or autumnal jewel tones. Speaking of celebratory news, we here at Ohlala have learned that in recent months, a growing number of luxury fashion houses like Gucci and Michael Kors have announced a commitment to more ethical fashion practices. Maison Margiela shared that after designer John Galliano’s meeting with PETA, the brand would go fur free, joining the ranks of brands like Calvin Klein, Stella McCartney, Vivienne Westwood, Tommy Hilfiger, Prada and more who have long eliminated fur from their collections.This new wave of major brands championing sustainable fashion marks a great leap forward for fashion and we’re all for it. Luxury brands aren’t the only ones joining the fur-free movement. Macys announced that it will stop selling fur at all Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s stores by February 2021 which, in my eyes, can only be deemed as a positive.

HANDCRAFTS PATEK PHILIPPE LAUNCHES WATCH ART GRAND EXHIBITION SINGAPORE 2019 THE CONTEMPORARY COLLECTION As heir to Geneva’s great watchmaking tradition, Patek Philippe perpetuates all the skills that have long played a role in the decoration of timepieces. Every year, the manufacturer presents a range of creations produced as one of a kind or as limited editions, reflecting extremely diverse sources of inspiration. THE COLLABORATION Patek Philippe is pleased to announce a collaboration with the National Museum of Singapore, an institution of the National Heritage Board, Singapore, as a joint effort in the preservation of the arts and heritage. The Watch Art Grand Exhibition Singapore 2019, had taken place from 28th September to 13th October at the Marina Bay Sands Theatre showcasing itself as the largest Grand Exhibition to date. In celebration of the Watch Art Grand Exhibition, Patek Philippe retailed for a nominal fee, a limited-edition commemorative catalogue that highlights the hundreds of historical timepieces, current collection (including 2019 new models), Rare Handcrafts, and Grand Complications that were showcased during the exhibition. 100 percent of the proceeds from the sales of the catalogue were donated to the National Museum of Singapore in support of the preservation of arts and heritage, reinforcing and entrenching a strong message about Patek Philippe’s values in continuation of the brand’s efforts to contribute to the arts and heritage in the country. 30

Iconic Reimagined:

ATELIER ZUHRA In awe of the splendor of the dresses of ATELIER ZUHRA, ANUSHAY TAIMUR KHAN got on board to get a behind-the-scenes vibe before they exhibited at Heya Arabian Fashion Exhibition. What is the inspiration behind your pieces? The collection is called “Infinity” and it draws inspiration from different coloured gemstones. The colours used in the collection match that of gemstones such as Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire, Amethyst and Citrine. How do you choose your material for every dress? The process of choosing materials always comes once I have decided the theme and conceptualized my idea behind the collection. Once I am clear on that, choosing materials is not a difficult task, as I would know what exactly would go with the designs I have made. I always use soft materials on which I can use a lot of embellishments. Atelier Zuhra’s overall vibe is very feminine and delicate so we choose our materials that would fit the aesthetic of the brand. How did it feel to have a solo show at London Fashion week? Honestly it felt extremely liberating for us it was a huge deal to conduct a solo show in a city like London and doing it successfully gave me a lot of confidence. I am proud of my entire team without whom this wouldn’t have been possible and from this point I assure you that we will only grow bigger. Describe the ideal Atelier Zuhra bride? Firstly, I believe an ideal Atelier Zuhra bride should be confident and should conduct herself with dignity. Our designs are very unique and the bride should carry it off well in a way that both the dress and the bride compliment each other.

How does it feel to have the label of the Best Arab Designer? I feel overwhelmed to hear this and again would like to mention that I have reached this stage only by the grace of God, with immense support of my family and my entire team. I believe there are a lot of Arab designers who are equally talented and this brings me a lot of pride and challenges me to better myself at every given stage. How does exhibiting in Heya add value to the brand? Exhibiting in Heya is big platform where I can promote my bridal collection with the rest of the world. It is an exhibition for all the couture bridal designers to showcase their wedding gowns. I meet a lot of new designers and get inspired. THE KYRA WAY The love for unique handbags had our local editor ANUSHAY TAIMUR KHAN falling in love with the magnificent designs by KYRA showcased at Heya Arabian Fashion Exhibition.

Why is your participation at this Edition of Heya Fashion Exhibition important and beneficial for the brand? We are optimistic that KYRA handbags meet the demands of Qatari market, especially Heya Fashion Exhibition visitors. We believe that Qatari market, especially the women who live in Doha, are appreciative and value the creations of designer-level products. KYRA had been introduced in Doha before, but we acknowledge Heya Fashion Exhibition as one great opportunity to expand our existence in Qatar. What is your strategy for introducing new designs? KYRA’s designs are always based on creative research, in order to develop fresh varieties for fashion enthusiasts. Participating in exhibitions and fashion shows is also important to get in touch with buyers and customers, we love to hear what they want! We also do several collaborations with fashion influencers to deliver our “values” and messages, as to build customer’s trust Your upcoming collection is inspired by The Museum of Islamic Arts. What elements of this and your recent travel ventures will be dominating the collection? The luxurious white exterior of Museum of Islamic Art was my starting point, followed by its beige and neutrals colour-blocking, which then translated into white calfskin and acrylic chain strap. The upcoming Spring/Summer 2020 collection is titled “Il Viaggio” mainly inspired by my travel experiences in Grindelwald, Switzerland in 2018; the fresh air, wooden houses, saturated green colour, the deep blue mountains and the beautiful red flowers - all packed in one colour harmony. 34

As you believe II Viaggio Collection to be a journey, tell us about your journey as a designer. Since I was a little girl, I grew up loving art in any way. I loved to draw, paint and watch a lot of Disney cartoons. I spent my childhood making comics, doodling, and more. This led me to take 3D animation course as a college degree. My career started when I was just 18, after I met Rifky. He just took over his father’s business, exotic leather specialist since 1985. Rifky is a creative person as well, so we decided to collaborate and launch KYRA by the end of 2012. It was not easy in the beginning; I was trying to find my character, my soul and the right role to run a well-established company. I kept on studying ever since; I took a fashion design course in 2014 where I finally did my first collection in 2015. In 2016 and 2017 KYRA participated in Jakarta Fashion Week (the biggest fashion event in Indonesia). In 2018 I made a big decision to continue my study program in handbag designing, in Milan, Italy. By this year in 2019 I finally feel that I found my character, I know where I’m going and the specialties that I have. It has been a long journey for me and KYRA, so I dedicate “Il Viaggio” collection, which means “journey” in Italian, for Heya Fashion Exhibition. I want my story to be that “Il Viaggio” is my true starting point in creating collection for the higher level in everything. How has KYRA, for you, become iconic since your launch? It is not all of the sudden that KYRA becomes an icon since our first start in 2012. It takes time, journey (and study!) to finally find the essence of presenting our vision. For me, KYRA always produces high value designs, detailed production, dynamic concept and story to tell in every collection. Each bag has its own unique character, and we spread the love in every product delivery. THE LUXURIOUS HIGH Star struck to be able to meet YULIYA LEVCHENKO, World Number 2 at high jump, ANUSHAY TAIMUR KHAN headed to the newly launched Boutique of Richard Mille at 21 High Street, Katara to see the brand ambassador and some classic Richard Mille pieces. Congratulations on ranking as the current World number 2 in the high jump. What do your friends think of your athletic success? How do you handle missing out on activities with friends because of your athletic schedule? I feel like I am not that young, but it still feels really good. I want to continue my work and keep getting better. I want to train hard and achieve even more goals. My friends and family only support me, they help me stay humble and I feel like I haven’t had any success. For our parents, I feel like we’re always the best, irrespective of how high I jump, they’re always telling me they’re proud of me. Support is a big part of sports! I am a student right now but, not your typical student. It is another world for me but it is critical to experience new things in your life. Sometimes it’s hard to speak to someone outside the sports world because they do not necessarily relate to you. I kept getting asked why I do it when I could go dancing or having other activities. But I love doing this and it really is that simple. You were named as Ukraine’s Best Female Athlete of the Year in 2017. Since Athletes have to eat healthy foods to be in top shape what types of food do you have to give up when you’re in training? Sportsmen need to have a good diet and it is important to keep the balance. It is all about the different types of food that you have to eat – sometimes you even have to eat chocolates because we burn a lot of calories in our profession and we need to keep that balance too. Fitness isn’t a professional sport; fitness is a special diet and training. I believe it is a hobby but, for professional sportsmen, it’s your life. It isn’t as difficult for me because I just need to know what calorie intake is normal for me so I can keep my portions balanced. I know my normal weight and I try to stay within the same range. How does it feel to be the youngest of Richard Mille’s partners? It is an honour to be a part of the family. I know there’s a new athlete who has come on board who is younger than me and that is what I love about this brand. They support young sportsmen because it is easier to go for well known names but, giving your support to younger athletes can mean something entirely different to them and that is what Richard 36

my trainings and can wear it to my social commitments as well. My outfit can change but my watch stays consistent. It fits perfectly with my look and I feel like it is a little part of me. How do you feel connected with Richard Mille? I feel a connection with everyone – especially if it’s a sportsman. If I see someone backed by the same brand, I feel like I can relate to them more and I have someone with me who understands this world and is supporting me as family. Richard Mille has become my support system now and that for me is the best part about this partnership. Tell us how you would describe someone who wears a Richard Mille watch. Anyone who wants to be the best, irrespective of which profession they come from, is the one who chooses Richard Mille.

RICHARD MILLE DOHA Mille is doing. What would you like your legacy to be? How do you feel this is embodied within the Richard Mille brand? People want to find a personal space and every person wants to feel like an individual who is adding value to their profession. I love how Richard Mille has brought everyone together from all different professions from all over the world; actors, sportsman and people in different areas of expertise as one family. We have the liberty to meet new people and discuss everything like one big family. We want to be better and that is what I want to stand for as well. To work better and to evolve. We have seen you as a born competitor who constantly strives to get better, improving on your personal best with every event. How do you and Richard Mille as a brand correlate? When someone accepts you as a family and they support you, it makes a huge difference to me. Sportsmen need brands and it is part of my job to have the support of the brands. When I see someone cheering for me, I feel mentally at peace and feel more supportive. In sports we have sportswear brands but we need to train with them and feel comfortable in our shoes, etc. With me, this association is with Richard Mille so, when I wear my watch, I feel so comfortable. How you apply your foundation is totally up to you. EXPRESS-ING THE STYLE With the event season picking up, our local editor ANUSHAY TAIMUR KHAN rushed to BLOW DRY BAR at ROYAL PLAZA to get a quick makeover for her day-long events.

ou know how they say that you can find your soulmate at any point in life? Well, at 29, I finally met Leah, my beauty soul mate who made my dreams come true. Before I start to talk about my perfect date at the Blow Dry Bar with Leah, let me give you a bit of background about this salon. Well, all your prayers have been answered because there is a bad-boy in town who knows that you don’t necessarily have hours to spend with them. I rushed to my appointment at exactly 4 PM and came out glammed up by 6 PM. When I say glammed up, I mean I got a hair treatment, a blow-dry, a head and shoulder massage and the final touch; makeup that lasted me the entire day. I walked in the Blow Dry Bar on a busy Thursday afternoon and saw that not only was it packed, not a single client was in the waiting line. 2-3 technicians worked on every individual and the place was running smoothly as everyone took turns at the nail and hair station. Once Leah and I settled on the treatment for my frizzy hair, she took me to the facial room, so that her peers could take the space and work on their clients. I discussed with her that I wanted to amplify the colour of my skin and not go a shade lighter to which she just agreed. We discussed the colour of my dress, the type of look I was hoping for and I closed my eyes, giving Leah all the trust I had in me that day. 45 minutes later, I looked at a doe-eyed 58

Anushay with the same skin colour that I love, contoured cheeks, and enhanced pink and brown shaded eyes. If I could talk about how Leah achieved perfection with my eyeliner, I would be talking about it for days. It was absolute perfection, I looked like myself and I have never said this before but here it goes; I felt beautiful. She rushed me to the hair station, and we started discussing my hair problems. I told her I had a couple of events to go to and I wanted volume which didn’t make me look like I walked right out the 80’s but didn’t give me flat hair either. I’m sure you guessed it by now but I am very particular about my hair and not everything pleases me. 25 minutes later, I gushed like a teenager going on her first prom because oh-my-gosh! The bounce, the layers and the entire look made me feel like a Queen who could conquer the world. Within 2 hours, I was ready for the dinner, the meeting and the fashion clients I was meeting that day all because I happened to meet my beauty soulmate! WITH A VIEW The rumour mill had our local editor ANUSHAY TAIMUR KHAN head to Four Seasons, Doha to experience some ‘me’ time at FRANCK PROVOST since the raving reviews were becoming even louder...

If you want to know the real feeling of experiencing ‘lifestyle with a view’ you need to head to Franck Provost, Four Seasons Doha. I was immediately wowed the moment I entered; big windows overlooking the sea, the diamond-like glare of the sun reflecting on the water, boats and the spectacular view of the hotel making this one of the best treatment experiences! I originally went in for an Olapex treatment but David, my hair guru for the day, immediately told me that I was going for the wrong treatment. He examined my hair and I literally felt so guilty because I knew I hadn’t been looking after my locks. He explained my situation to me and recommended the Kérastase Chronologiste treatment instead. The treatment consisted of thorough shampooing with one of the recommended shampoos that David asked me to go for (it now sits in my collection) followed by the serums that were left in my hair for a good 20-30 minutes. I was handed over to Seelan who made my entire experience all the more magnificent. That view and Seelan’s head and shoulder massage were my little island break in itself. Whilst I enjoyed getting pampered by the hair specialists, I was introduced to Jolinda who introduced me to the dipping powder nails routine. Since I am not a huge fan of nail extensions, I decided to go natural and chose a very subtle colour for this as it caught my eye the minute I was shown the palette. The technique takes an hour or so because it is meant to stay on for at least a month, for which there were layers added which included the base, the shine and the top coat. My nails were literally dipped in powder in between every layer and the result? Smooth, matte and visibly strong nails. Since this treatment is for those who tend to have weak nails I fit right in and I’m certainly a convert to this. I received compliments from everyone – Jolinda herself, the team and even a lady at the cashier! An excellent view with expert technicians is what I take away from Franck Provost. I was lucky enough to witness some envy worthy blow dries in the house and experienced a new treatment, which helped me understand my hair better. Honestly, can a girl ask for more? @franckprovostqa

The most unique and thoroughly overwhelming aspect of the hotel would have to be the abundance of lobby areas which are all individual and exquisitely styled. The Lobby with marble floors and elegant illumination is accessed through huge carved wooden doors. This creates such a sense of grandeur and pays homage to the original use of the space. The exposed beamed ceilings with dark, irregular poles is a stark contrast to the contemporary circular leather seating, vivid colour scheme and opulent choice of fabrics. The lobby area continues to a more traditional aesthetic with tessellated patterns running through all of its elements. The highlight is the tessellated lighting around the archways and the subdued glow created throughout. Chandeliers and orbs crafted from glass provide a fusion of ancient and modern. The Skylight Lobby is worth visiting the hotel alone. The ceiling is designed to look completely exposed to the elements revealing a midnight blue sky. Traditional lanterns hang, in abundance, from the mock canopy above and irregular beams protrude from the walls as they would have originally. Columns are kissed with delicate light which streams from up and down lighters. The whole space, every element gives the illusion of being open to the elements. Souq Al Wakra Hotel prides itself upon its diverse dining concepts in five outlets both in terms of the menu choices and the staging within each restaurant area. Markhan Lounge and its vast terrace area affords diners the opportunity to take in the stunning gulf sunsets with the tones and colours of this spectacle reflected in the colour scheme. Vivid corals, blues and sandy tones along with traditional woodwork combine to make both an elegant and relaxed setting. In addition Markhan offers an Arabic fusion lounge with panoramic views of the sea and also the stunning sunsets. The setting is more contemporary with azure blues providing a contrast against dark woods. Elegant crockery and crisply folded napkins illustrate the high end vibe here at Markhan. The majlis area offers a Bedouin experience on breath taking levels. Sunken seating accessed by an illuminated staircase inside a tented canopy. The choice of bold colours and patterns is an absolute triumph. Statement pieces such as copper, silver and pewter coffee pots and stunted tables brimming in a bounteous selection of fresh fruit make this area a feast for the senses. My dining experience in Jarnen Restaurant was a combination of locally sourced produce, all from nearby markets, the highlight being an assiette of seafood and 80

grilled to order barbecue meats all seasoned delicately and charred expertly. The setting and ambience was thoroughly Qatari but the bountiful variety of Mediterranean flavours highlighted the fact that the hotel embraces the best of everything from around the globe. The hotel is a network of interconnected buildings punctuated with walkways and maze like paths which merge into secluded courtyards. With a total of 101 rooms and suites they either open out onto these courtyards or have impressive sea views. Both are equally impressive and unique in their own way. The Superior Suite has facilities and décor which are second to none, yet the layout is distinctly homely with interconnecting rooms as would have been the case in the heritage homes. The colour scheme of crisp white sheets with turquoise accents injects modernity into a traditional setting. To take the Al Wakra experience up a notch then choosing to base your stay in one of the Suites with their fresh, clean sophisticated vibrance is a must. The layout is, as expected, ingrained with Arabic charm but on-trend furniture, bold use of fabrics, shades and tones infuses extant urbanity. An absolute triumph of modish design.

Although the hotel is already a haven of tranquillity and calm guests may wish to take relaxation to a hedonistic level in the hotel spa. The courtyard boasts a star shaped water feature and shade giving pagoda perfect for post treatment requiescence. My experience ignited with the Under The Rain Scrub Experience which had me lying back on a special water bed as a delicate shower and steam treatment from the rain mist of a French Vichy Shower banished toxins and prepped my skin for my body scrub. Next up was my Vichy Shower Massage utilising the benefits of water and light therapy to stimulate and indulge the senses. The tantalising Hydrating Facial that combats dehydration, dryness and overall skin purities was amazing! The use of cold apparatus locked in rejuvenating moisture that left me with a visible glow with my skin feeling supple and smooth. The additional features such as the hydro pool and Jacuzzi Spa certainly lift the experience beyond that of a standard hotel spa. Whether you choose to relax on the terrace with its loungers and sofas hugging the contours of the expanse of water, peppered with fountains or indulge in both the delectable cuisine and views from one of the restaurants you can not fail to fall in love with this hidden gem. This month she stepped back into Mosaic for a midweek date with her family and our selfproclaimed foodie has officially spoken. Downtown Msheireb has been upping their game since the beginning of this year and Mandarin Oriental is one of the main contributing factors. Once you enter this prestigious hotel, you’re welcomed by a huge mandarin fruit inspired fan on the wall next to the most beautiful flower décor. The ever-so-lovely staff guides you to the lift and ‘ting!’ we set foot inside Mosaic. Prior to this visit, it’s imperative that you note that I’ve been here before, but the way the restaurant lights up at night is a completely new experience in comparison to their lunch offerings . My culinary journey at Mosaic started with the chef bringing out the fanciest assortment of Sashimi. The classic mandarin segmented fan gave the entire sashimi basket such a resplendent look. So, the tone is set; Mosaic is going to be all about the aesthetics! Once the starters rolled in, my hunger pangs were given a new life. From the good old cold Arabic mezze, the heirloom tomato and truffle pide that I inhaled, and the oh-so delicious volcano sushi; I experienced sheer joy as I kept digging from one platter to another. The plump, air filled bread with the Arabic platter was just the warmest welcome that I never knew that I needed that night. When the main courses came in, I was already smitten by the Vietnamese BBQ beef short ribs – a speciality in Doha that I have grown to love. It came with sweet caramel and fish glaze that brought richness to the dish and gave my taste buds a joy ride – absolutely exquisite. Now, I’ve tried the Hyderabadi biryani of Mandarin Oriental before and it is already one of my favourites when it comes to fine dining Indian dishes in Doha, and it didn’t disappoint. have to cut to see the warm smoke come out of - the delicious biryani proves itself as an unparalleled contender. . It feels like this foodie came back home. To make this experience even more delightful, the assorted tandoori kebab platter filled me with nostalgic memories to Eid – BBQ’d to perfection and tasting like a treat from above! The beautiful view and the pleasant conversation with the multicultural staff allowed me to truly experience the ambience of the place. The level of detail in the finishing touches made this experience even better. For example, my table setting was replicated for my toddler too! How absolutely adorable. Once we started on the desserts, I had an entirely new appetite. I engulfed The Berry Pavlova with raspberry sorbet and enticingly perfect strawberry syrup. I usually do not like pavlova since it is dry, but the chef made

I absolutely love it when a restaurant takes the everyday meal and gives it a twist of its own and that is exactly what Mandarin Oriental presented to me; a twist in the middle of the week to get me excited about food again. According to various dictionaries, to have beauty means to “possess qualities that give great pleasure or satisfaction to see, hear, think about, etc.; delighting the senses or mind.” It is a word that describes the totality of a person, appreciating many details about them. So, then, how did this once empowering and inspiring word turn into such a “taboo” concept? Why is it that the word alone is intimidating for women to think about? I believe that it starts with how society has embraced this seemingly unrealistic perception of beauty. Now, the word beauty stands in for a woman who has Kylie Jenner’s lips, Cara Delevigne’s body, Zooey Deschanel’s eyes, and Angelina Jolie’s face—a crazily unrealistic idea. In part, we do it to ourselves. Women put so much pressure on themselves to look a certain way based strictly off of what they see. Think about it, how often do you see an attractive girl walking past you, and you automatically are comparing yourself to her. She has nicer legs, or better hair, or is wearing nicer clothes. By constantly competing with this other girl, you are actually destroying all that makes you amazing. Or let’s say it was the opposite, you think that you’re way prettier than her, she’s inferior to you, that is still causing some major damage to not only your insecurities but her self esteem as well. If you’re constantly competing with those around you, you are putting way too much pressure on yourself to be perfect. A perfection that does not exist. Instead of judging and comparing, we should be asking ourselves what makes us feel beautiful. Is it waking up every morning and doing your hair and makeup? Then awesome, wake up and get ready because you want to feel confident and beautiful for yourself, not to impress others. Or maybe it’s listening to “Beautiful” by Christina Aguilera on repeat in your car on the way to work. Then by all means sing along to it. Or maybe it’s being with a group of your friends and taking endless selfies. Always embrace what makes you feel beautiful, and do it for yourself, no one else.
