EDITOR’S LETTER

HOUSE OF HOLLAND

I

n today’s youth-obsessed world, just walking out the door, flicking on the TV, or checking your Instagram feed can be a veritable minefield for your self-esteem. Even when you know deep down that you’re scrolling through someone’s highlight reel, it still impacts you in real life. Thankfully, a slew of insanely stylish and savvy femmes in their 60s are breaking the mold with authenticity, honesty, and a zero-face-lift policy. These women are proud of their unconventional looks, disregard trends for personal style, eschew gender conformity for feminism, and exercise their sharp wits, all while they perfect the art of aging gracefully. Their punk-rock attitude is catching on, and luxury brands have taken notice, tapping women in their 60s, 70s, and even 90s for major campaigns over the latest ‘It’ girl and looking at them for inspiration on the catwalks (Glance over to our Style Focus pages!). This made me think about their persona as modelling isn’t the only arena where these women shine. There’s something liberating about ageing, ditching your demons, and accepting the body you’ve been given once and for all and we can all learn a lot from respecting our elders. Allow yourself to be in a sunny disposition, allow your positive personality to shine through, and allow the ageless philosophy of ‘it’s what’s on the inside that counts’ to flow over you... as it is the only thing that truly counts, isn’t it?

Behind the SCENE

Showcasing over 300 designers and brands under one roof only means one thing... The 14th edition of Heya Arabian Fashion Exhibition is back with its Autumn/Winter 2018 collection. Celebrate an unparallelled platform for designers from Qatar, the GCC and beyond between 26th to 30th October at Doha Exhibition and Convention Center. Ohlala spotlights two designers to reveal their brand and what the exhibition means to them. www.heya.qa / www.dczqtr.com / @dczstyle

M

ODISH is showcasing at the upcoming 14th HEYA Arabian Fashion Exhibition and we reveal an added dimension behind the brand founded by Qatari designer, Noor Alsulaiti. When was your concept of creating this brand first ignited? After seeking a new contemporary style for local traditional abayas MODISH design journey began in 2014. What is your inspiration behind each piece? As an interior designer with a strong fascination towards the Art Deco era, the brand seamlessly reflects those details in all of its collections. All of my inspiration comes from contrast of colours, abstract shapes and patterns as I seek to find the differences and dissimilarity and stitch it into a piece of beauty that one can own and keep. How far has the abaya come in terms of being a fashion rather than a cultural statement? Abayas will always remain a cultural statement that symbolises tradition and modesty. Abayas are a statement that is very much appreciated by the community, for every women that seeks ultimate beauty in fashion there is nothing more successful than combining it in a piece of traditional wear. Why is your participation at the 14th Edition of Heya important and beneficial for the Modish brand? Heya exhibition is considered one of the biggest fashion events within this region that is mainly specialised in women’s fashion, it is a great opportunity to drastically expand MODISH customer base; it is our third participation. It is also a great platform to showcase our recent handiwork as our loyal customers have been very keen to view our FW18/19 collection. What is the key to a cutting-edge, unique and versatile abaya? 36

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Our brand is very well known in creating elegant, sophisticated, and feminine abayas yet respectful to the tradition. Focusing on unique details and material ensure for the ultimate quality and finishing. Is there a particular country that has influenced your most successful collection of abayas? There is no country in particular MODISH is influenced by as the brand seeks exceptional beauty everywhere and anywhere. Name some themes that might inspire upcoming collections? Simplicity X Complexity. @modish.doha

I

ntroducing Soleil Abaya, a homegrown Qatari brand revealing why they love making one-of-a-kind designs and showcasing at HEYA Exhibition. When was your concept of creating this brand first ignited? I have always had a great passion in designing my own abayas and implementing such ideas with local tailors. I used to get a lot of compliments and I was pushed towards enhancing my abilities and starting up a business. I finally decided to take the plunge and started working on my concept in 2014. What is your inspiration behind each piece? There is nothing specific that my designs are based upon nor a specific inspiration. My creative vision always happens spontaneously especially once I am under pressure or obliged to work with a specific material; tilting the situation to the benefit of the design. I definitely work on a deadline! How far has the abaya come in terms of being a fashion rather than a cultural statement? Personally I still strongly believe that religiously and culturally the abaya will forever maintain its unique value, however, I work very hard on my designs to always feature the cultural preservative value with a beautiful fashionable twist. Why is your participation at the 14th Edition of Heya important and beneficial for the Soleil Abaya brand? Heya exhibition is considered to be the strongest platform for any designer as there is a lot of foot traffic. You’re able to meet new customers and introduce yourself to such a competitive market. Heya’s management and organisers are already aware of my customer base from their knowledge of the market and the turnout at my booth. On the other hand, I still benefit from meeting new clients and interacting with more local designers which allows us to be unanimously proud of this great accomplishment that we

are all contributing towards from a fashion point of view. What is the key to a cutting-edge, unique and versatile abaya? The key point of the best design is the actual implementation of the design itself. There are three main factors that contribute in the success or failure of said design process; material, cut and the quality of finishing. What is the future vision for evolving your brand? Our goal at Soleil Abaya is to reach the highest level in the fashion industry for our particular market. We are aiming towards the honour of reaching every local house in Qatar and seeing our designs adorned by all types of clientele. @soleil_abayaa www.ohlala-magazine.com

OHLALA Spotlight

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS 2018 Diva Lounge Spa, a leading ladies only boutique day spa in Qatar, takes a social responsibility in raising awareness about breast cancer and educating women on the importance of regular screening, adopting a healthy lifestyle and pursuing wellness for a better life.

E

veryone knows October is PINKTOBER! The Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A month dedicated to Breast Cancer initiatives that focus on supporting research and educating women about prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. Cancer is one of the most feared diseases characterised by uncontrolled growth and the spread of abnormal cells. Apart from skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, affecting 1 in 8 females in developed countries and accounting to 12% of all cancer cases. Life is all about choices. The lifestyle you choose to adopt can greatly affect your chances of developing cancer. Small changes in your lifestyle will make a difference in cancer prevention. Eating a well-balanced diet based on veggies, fruits and whole grains, regular exercise, limiting alcohol intake and avoiding tobacco are all the right steps to minimise the risk of developing cancer. Early detection increases the chances of survival hence regular mammogram screening is extremely important to detect breast cancer in women. Stress, referred to as the silent killer, is another risk factor for developing cancer. Studies indicate that stress lowers the immunity system and allows for tumour growth and fast progression of cancer cells. Also, when people are under pressure they tend to make poor choices in their lifestyles like smoking, compulsive eating, consuming alcohol, no exercising, all of which are linked to developing cancer. It is therefore imperative that stress is well managed at all times. Many undermine the importance of spa treatments in managing stress. Regular spa treatments have proven to boost physical immunity and to positively impact psychological health. Massage is a great way to relieve stress as it not only increases blood circulation and reduces blood pressure but also boosts serotonin levels which help to regulate mood, appetite and sleep. Treatments such as facials and hammam rituals contribute to mood enhancement whilst ancient Chinese complementary therapies such as reflexology is a great way to promote healing and improve well-being and vitality. To mark the World Breast Cancer Awareness month this year, Diva Lounge Spa in association with the Primary Health Corporation’s (PHCC) National Breast and Bowel Cancer Program ‘Screen for Life’ will host a workshop on Prevention and Early Detection of Cancer which will focus on the different symptoms of cancer and the importance of regular screening for the early detection of breast cancer. The workshop will also include a presentation by Sandra Hope, a Cancer Survivor who will talk about her journey with cancer and share insights about the importance of living a healthy, balanced and active lifestyle as a preventive measure against cancer. Diva Lounge Spa will also provide a Mobile Mammography Screening Unit to enable professional ladies the opportunity to have a mammogram. The Mobile Screening Unit will be parked at the Gate Mall on Sunday 28 October 2018 from 9am to 9pm. To register for the workshop and the mammogram screening kindly send an email to info@divaspaqatar.com or call Grace on 70303198. @diva_lounge_spa

RAPUNZEL’S PROTOCOL

ANAHI BROWN gives us the 411 on amping up our lacklustre locks with some nutrients and habits for unbeatable results.

O

h, Rapunzel, let down your hair! Who hasn’t encountered this story and wished to also have Rapunzel’s shiny, strong and abundantly beautiful hair? I mean, I don’t know about you, but I would love to be able to use my hair as a rope, and only she has accomplished this so far. Fortunately, this wish doesn’t have to stay in the land of Happily Ever After. Beautiful hair is an inside job that depends as much on our genetics as it does on our diet and the care we give it. However, in a market saturated by pills, gummies, masks and even potions that promise beautiful hair, sometimes it feels like we’re asking one of the seven dwarfs instead of relying on science. So, let’s talk hair care with facts so we can create our own Rapunzel Protocol to recover, heal, nourish and protect our hair. Furthermore, so that we can achieve its optimal expression and health. These are the best nutrients you can bring into your diet right away:

50

www.ohlala-magazine.com

• Protein: When you think beautiful hair you rarely think about eating a steak; however, proteins are the building blocks for our body, so focusing on consuming good quality options will help your body in creating healthy cells to grow hair from. My favourite source for hair (and nails) health? Collagen, which is an amazing amino acid that we rarely consume and lack terribly. • Iron and Zinc: These minerals are involved in the health and performance of hair follicles (aka where our hair comes from) as well as in tissue oxygenation, growth and repair. How to tackle them? Indulge in Zinc and Iron rich foods like spinach, shellfish, mushrooms and meat. • B Complex: This group of water soluble vitamins play a huge role in cell metabolism. They are all important for our general health, nonetheless Biotin (known as B7, Vitamin H or Coenzyme R) and B5 are particularly relevant in supporting our adrenals, which stimulates hair growth, as well as thickening hair fibres and increasing its pliability, helping it better withstand the wear and tear of life. Want a way to up their intake? Start with eggs, avocados, nuts, dark leafy greens, meat and poultry. • Vitamins C and D: These two fight cell ageing as well as support hormonal balance, so consuming them supports with healthier looking hair that grows healthily thanks to our happy hormones. To get your daily doses, make sure to add bell peppers, citric fruits, kiwis, fatty fish like salmon and mackerel, as well as safely expose yourself to the sun. It’s true that not everyone is genetically coded to have huge amounts of thick Coachella-worthy hair as much of our hair’s texture, quantity and pattern will depend on genetics. However, if you nail your diet and use some of these hacks, you too can have a luscious and healthy mane within your own biology… who knows, you could redefine your own Rapunzel story! @anahibrown.coach

VIRTUAL VANITY Beauty Anywhere & Anytime’ is the tagline for innovative app Venita and we are already thankful for how it has transitioned into our overall beauty regime. Co-Founder ALI ALMOHANNADI reveals all.

W

hat motivated you to create Venita and make the decision to launch the app? In the 21st century, people have busy lives and when they want to get their haircut or have their nails done etc, they don’t have time to ask their friends where to go and then call around to book appointments - this is where Venita really showcases itself. Clients get frustrated that there isn’t an easy way to find and book an appointment; scrolling mindlessly through different instagram accounts and websites. When I looked into it I realised that stylists and salons aren’t empowered either and it seemed like an exciting opportunity to share with Qatar. There are a lot of people out there who have certain needs when it comes to a stylist. It might be someone that specialises in a certain hair texture or service. Some want a place in their district or a particular price range. We are making it easy to find that service so they’re more likely to keep using Venita. Tell us how you were able to develop the app from concept to commercialisation? It started as an idea that aimed to tackle the problem with the lengthy process of booking salons. Venita has commercialised itself as an integral app that copes with the era of technology and speed required today. The Venita team initially was just my friend and I who is the Chief of Technology in the company, utilising his degree in Software Engineer and Development whilst also his impressive work experience in building technological solutions for hospitality and financial sectors in Qatar. We then grew our Venita family with members from the Qatari community that have diversified skills who can always bring something to the table. With a team with diversified skills, we were able to build our business model from different perspectives to achieve success with the booking process of salons. Most professionals in the industry are really talented and just want to make people feel great. They’re artists and many of them are really good at what they do, but, they don’t have any tools to help them manage the business side of their world. We wanted to create something 52

www.ohlala-magazine.com

that grows their business for them, and lets them spend more time building relationships and doing what they do best, whilst also allowing their business to develop through our application. We’re officially hooked on Venita’s app accessibility, but, in your own words, why should people download Venita? We are an online beauty booking platform which connects people with salons, spa, wellness and everything to do with beauty. This also includes beauty venues, makeup artists and also stylists - including a constant rotation of offers and which girl doesn’t like a promotional bargain? There are optimised services to allow everything to be your ‘onestop-shop’ app and maximise your day. Furthermore, we have beauty navigation too which allows you to get directions to the premises or book an uber directly through the app. Basically, we try to make life easier for you - including new trends and beauty advice incorporated through our beauty blogs on social media. We are proud to say that we are the largest online platform to discover, book and experience beauty and wellness services online in Qatar. Also, we have the best in-house team to ensure that the security is unparalleled when it comes to paying online so you know that your transactions are completely secure.

HEALTH Files

Why do you feel that there is a heightened demand for beauty and wellness services? We are not just a beauty booking platform, we are a beauty community platform. Mini blogs have been integrated into our social media to allow for tips and tricks to be shared amongst our users. These days, now more than ever, people are wanting to optimise their time as we live in the era of technology and speed. People are expecting a booking process to be easy and fast as possible and anything that doesn’t fall into this criteria is considered as a bad process. Venita is here to help you utilise your ‘me time’ at a time and place that suits you. As the creator of this app, how often do you use it yourself ? This was originally launched as a female-only platform, but, we have already signed Male Spas, therefore in the next few months this will be rolled out for full accessibility to everyone in Qatar. The salons are continuously updated and it provides you with both a ‘Salon/Home’ feature to heighten your customer experience. What is the most rewarding part of your job working in this field? When we launched our app, it was rewarding to see local beauty businesses very excited that this application had emerged to enhance their business processes and make them more accessible to their customers. Our business model was developed to assess beauty salons needs to better promote their services and it was always fundamentally based on a win-win basis and that is what I find truly rewarding. YOUR MOMENT When looking for something out of the ordinary you shouldn’t settle for anything less than the best. We interview leading wedding and events organiser MOMENTS’ Managing Partner, ELIAS MEKHAEL, revealing why they’re unparalleled with bespoke extraordinary celebrations.

H

ow long have you been in the Events business? Over 15 years - it’s been eventful and adventurous to say the least. Why and When was Moment’s Wedding and Events started? Having been in the industry for some time, I observed a gap where clients would have difficulties organising their wedding. It ranged from the right venue, a creative design and alignment of the wedding theme to wedding dress design, jewellery, accessories, etc… Also many brides are stressed and fatigued on their wedding day and definitely no bride should feel that way, thus the idea of solving all this issue brought the birth of Moments. As to when, the idea was baking for a few years and only in February did I start to lay the ground for Moments Wedding and Events. What factors do you consider when choosing an event venue? The Capacity based on expected guests, The Design concept and possibility of implementation, Venue location and accessibility, Venue logistics , Catering quality that’s being served just to mention a few, however there’s more to be considered for the right venue based on specific requirements of a wedding. What are your strategies for dealing with irate clients? In my opinion the client doesn’t get upset unless there’s a reason. What we try to do is ensure we fulfill our agreement to deliver an amazing event and exceed their expectation whenever possible. Every wedding contract lays the ground rules ensuring no loopholes for any misunderstanding thus avoiding any angry clientele. Tell us about a time you had to deal with a last-minute change or unexpected situation when planning an event. The unexpected is always expected in this industry. - utilising past experience and a professional team is key. For example, we were in a venue at 4th floor and we were taking materials up in the elevator, but, there was a technical issue and the elevator stopped. We had a monumental panic but we had to improvise and hired 40 extra manpower to carry the materials from ground to the 4th floor - it’s a miracle all was completed in time. What are some of the ways you measure event success? The brides smile; her facial reaction as she comes to the ballroom for rehearsal checking on the venue décor and placement. Her glowing face shows that we have made her dreams come to reality and some brides have shed tears of joy as they were checking out the venue. After all of the long hours the brides gratitude and joy becomes the moment of all moments for 64

a wedding planner. Have you ever planned multiple events at the same time? How did you prioritise your time and resources to meet critical deadlines? No.I do not believe multiple events should be happening at the same time, We always have 14 days break between our events. It’s the most important day of one’s life so full attention and dedication is key as they’ve entrusted us to fulfill their dream. How many weddings have you participated in? A lot. In my early years we were doing a lot of weddings but with Moment’s wedding and events, our focus is quality in large scale wedding which needs more preparation and attention to detail. Do you have a portfolio of weddings that you’ve recently done that Bridesto-be can browse? Yes. We schedule private viewing upon clients enquiry for wedding décor and our creative themes. We do it in the showroom only, not on social media platforms for privacy purposes.

How would you describe your design style? (e.g. traditional, modern, rustic, organic) Futuristic actually. We like to play creatively with something old, something modern and something new - unexpected to ensure every brides fantasy is executed in an amazing way. We design their moments. Which flowers would you recommend based on the time of year/season and colour palette? For Autumn, Asiatic Lily , Carnation and Dahlia for bountiful bloom full of life. Winter I would recommend Amaryllis, Narcissus paperwhite and Calla Lily in burgundy is forever appealing. Peonies and Ranunculus are the go-to for Spring. For summer, Veronica and Freesia combo, but also Hydrangea is beautiful. However, mainly the flowers go with preferences and are aligned to the desired theme. If I gave you a picture of a bouquet and/or centerpiece that I like, can you recreate it? Our goal is always to create a beautiful colourful floral arrangement that will complement clients’ style uniquely and based on the theme therefore we curate rather than duplicate. What other décor elements can you provide? We do not provide décor elements as we actually build the wedding from scratch. Everything is customised and selected in exquisite detail covering everything from the Stage, Kosha, table, chairs, floral décor, hanging elements, lighting and sounds etc.. all of this has to be as per the wedding theme. Do you create sample arrangements before signing a contract? We create a mood board presentation with samples for every single element that will be used during the wedding. Can you assist with the preservation of the bouquet after the wedding? If not, can you recommend someone? This is not something we do and it’s not available in Qatar. What happens is if there’s a request of preservation we get the bouquet preserved from Holland before the wedding. This can last for a minimum of 5 years to 15 years depending on storage condition. www.momentsweddings.events @momentseventsco

HEALTH Files

VIVA LA DAYCAY OHLALA’S relaxation mode was well and truly switched on when we visited KATARA BEACH Club undoubtedly unveiling itself as the hostess with undoubtedly the ‘mostess’…

K

atara Beach Club is synonymous with luxury, quality, indulgence and consistently delivering service at the very highest level. This is exemplified throughout its 4600m2 club which has separated gender floors and boasts incredible views of the Doha skyline. It was with a sense of great excitement and anticipation that we arrived at the resort eager to be tempted by all manner of indulgences and the very finest in spa facilities. The manicured grounds lead down to the pool area and the stunning beach and lagoon beyond. The white sand and glistening sea will certainly entice you to take a stroll along the private beach area or indeed discover the surrounding area via their various water sports. Their trainer was highly professional and had us feeling like pros with the kayaks in next to no time, whilst also ensuring that my friend and I were appropriately hydrated with ice cold refreshments and adorned with fluffy robes and slippers. After indulging in the overall Beach Club facilities we enjoyed Yin Yoga that is geared around providing guests with the opportunity to detox, refresh their body and mind and most importantly centre oneself, achieving Zen. The mini head massage at the end was also a nice touch! The club’s vast array of facilities, treatment rooms, saunas and salt rooms ensured that we were well sustained throughout our visit. One can not attend Katara Beach Club and not mention their incredible signature snow room; the feeling of crunching snow beneath my feet not only heightened the effects of my previous sauna session, but, hugged me in waves of nostalgia from my childhood. We further indulged ourselves with Elemis facials that were delivered expertly by their senior UK therapist. After our consultation, we delved into each of our own bespoke treatments that ensured that every stroke and product used was to optimise and complement our specific skin type, whilst their

accompanying shoulder and decolletage massage ensured that any tension that had been built-up over the working week was deliciously unravelled over the course of the next hour. The dimmed lighting throughout Katara Beach Club adds furthermore to the overriding sense of relaxation and serenity heightening the benefits of our overall visit. Guests are encouraged to linger for infinite amounts of time by the variety of facilities and lounge areas. Nevertheless, the prospect of lunch at Croft Alley was enough to draw us away, albeit reluctantly. The atmosphere is intimate and very relaxed but the opulence and elegance of this bistro makes dining here an experience which will set a benchmark for all the other health clubs that you may visit. The Pan Seared salmon was accompanied by a yuzu jalapeno sauce and creamed spinach. The crisp outer layer was perfectly complemented by the moist moreish flesh inside and every bite was an explosion of flavour and texture. My companion devoured the tender slices of Ribeye Steak that were promptly served which were accompanied by the most beautifully honey gingered carrots. Everything here is fresh and wholesome, and, definitely mouthwatering. I’d come back for my soy milk cappuccino alone! With heavy hearts we had to leave, but, whether you are in need of an afternoon to unwind or recharge or perhaps you want to explore the culinary treats on offer you will undoubtedly be wowed at every inch of Katara Beach Club. REGIONAL Escapes

#RCMEMORIES Ritz-Carlton’s luxury Sharq Village & Spa is a self-proclaimed ‘beachside resort celebrating the fusion of modern and traditional values in the heart of Doha’, and we were thrilled to experience that such words were amplified meticulously throughout our staycation. As I approached Sharq Village and Spa I actually felt a little giddy with anticipation. The nature of the resort is that of a traditional Qatari desert village with the elegant modern accommodation spread across 14 traditional style villas. 174 rooms and suites are set amidst these whitewashed residences each around tranquil courtyards with rooms overlooking the vast pool areas, the stunning water front of the Arabian Gulf or the lush manicured gardens which surround the resort. The ability to marry contemporary, cutting edge service and facilities with traditional architecture and surroundings is no mean feat but Sharq Village and Spa has succeeded in this - effortlessly. The Ocean View King suite combines decadence and traditional Arabian elegance. The vast veranda style balcony with its mahogany, trellised balustrade is perfect for couples, families or businessmen wishing to enjoy the balmy evening air whilst enjoying a sense of seclusion and privacy. Whether standing looking over the pool and gardens, speckled with large lanterns illuminating the walkways or gazing at the Gulf meeting the sun as it sets on the horizon, one is immediately drawn into the sense of luxury and peacefulness. Rooms and suites, including Beit Al Shyoukh – The Royal Villa- boast rainforest showers and deep soaking baths with amenities supplied by iconic British luxury brand, Asprey. The fusion of state-of-the-art technology and luxuriant décor may make it very difficult to venture beyond the walls of your accommodation. Throughout the lobby the elegant tones of a Grand Piano lingered in the air as I made my way to dinner, admiring the stunning Chandelier suspended high above me. The molten glass globules, descending from the ceiling, glowing and illuminating the Pianist seated below highlighted the clever way in which contemporary features make every space unique. My final destination of the evening was Parisa, meaning Angel, the sea-view restaurant with enviable views across the landscaped grounds and Sea beyond. After ascending up a staircase whose curves 68

REGIONAL Escapes

hug yet another stunning piece of suspended illumination, I discovered that the tone of Parisa is that of understated elegance and the stonetopped tables and wrought iron furniture adorned with blue and white crockery gave a fresh feel to the dining area. The food was far from predictable or mundane. The appetisers included an array of salads such as Mast-O-Artisho comprising Labneh, artichoke and walnuts delicately seasoned with mint and lime juice as well as meat based dishes such as Dolma Mix with minced lamb, rice, eggplant and peppers in a tomato sauce. More Persian delights were cooked and presented in traditional clay pots , the highlight of which was definitely the Slow Cooked Lamb and Spinach with Red Beans. All of the food is so refreshingly authentic and brilliantly executed, however, the show-stopping dishes certainly come from the Charcoal Grill. Beef, lamb, prawns and fish are given a vibrant kiss of both colour and flavour with a blend of saffron and onions. Dessert was dominated by staples such as halva and crème brulee infused subtly with rose water and saffron, once again to further infuse the palate. Following such an indulgent dinner, breakfast in bed or rather on the terrace of my suite was a very welcome start to the day. Fresh fruit, pastries and western staples such as hash browns, eggs and sausages set me up nicely for my Spa experience which followed. The large, heavy wooden doors open into a series of rooms around a central courtyard with a calming water feature, which to all intents and purposes looks like a typical Qatari Village dwelling. The 50 minute signature massage treatment was further evidence of the importance of bespoke experiences for every guest and the quest for excellence in every area of the resort. After a light, lazy lunch in Al Seef and further idling by the vast, glistening pool I ventured to Al Liwan – roughly translated as The Terrace – which is the hotel’s buffet style restaurant for their Seafood Themed Buffet Night. The décor is mesmerising and decadent with the centrepiece being a series of central archways below which are planters containing miniature topiary. In addition, traditional carvings are illuminated from below giving a further sense of grandeur. There was no way that I could fail to be impressed by the surroundings or the food on offer. Large ice filled chillers displayed bountiful amounts of crustacea and freshly prepared fish. Lobster, oysters and delicately crafted, colourful sushi and sashimi combined with a plentiful plethora of salads and freshly baked breads. The live cooking stations were as much a treat for the eyes as the palate and allowed diners to tailor dishes to their own exacting standards. Truly an oceanic odyssey. Sad to be departing after feeling refreshed and thoroughly spoiled

“Whether standing looking over the pool and gardens, speckled with large lanterns illuminating the walkways or gazing at the Gulf meeting the sun as it sets on the horizon, one is immediately drawn into the sense of luxury and peacefulness.” my experience was topped off on the final morning by breakfast, this time back in Al Liwan. All of the continental staples such as cold meats, cheeses and salads were there in abundance along with the crustiest warm breads, fresh fruit taking in every colour of the rainbow and delicious flaky pastries. The stations which housed every imaginable type of grain, seeds and dried fruit was a first for me and the live omelette station was fabulous. Sharq Village and Spa is the kind of resort that will leave you feeling that you will run out of fitting adjectives to describe it before your visit is over. Breathtaking, decadent, stunning, resplendent - I could go on and on. Truly an experience not to be missed when visiting Doha! @sharqvillageandspa www.ohlala-magazine.com

NATURAL BEAUTY Organic Qatari brand for hair and skin care has been unleashed under the umbrella of SA BY SAMIA and we cannot get enough of their amazing smelling products. Thankyou for our latest obsession SAMIA ALSALEH!

A

s of late I’ve felt that I have become more aware of the products that I use as a health and environmentally conscious individual, especially when it comes to enjoying beauty treatments. Luckily Sa by Samia has unleashed its natural products for hair and skin care and, what’s more, is that they are an organic homegrown Qatari brand. Samia unveiled this brand of products from beauty secrets passed down from generations including the benefits of organic food and ingredients. Again, it comes back to that personal social responsibility that you always feel better spending your well earned money with an independent boutique as opposed to a mainstream business - especially when there is no exchange on quality either. Everything here at Sa by Samia is sulfate, cruelty and paraben free, and, of course, naturally delicious meaning that you and your concious can leave here smiling… don’t worry your body will thank you later! @sa.by.samia Sa by Samia is available at @organiqueqa and @addoony.beauty

PARABEN-FREE

PARABENS ARE FOUND IN MANY EVERYDAY PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS, INCLUDING SOAPS, CONDITIONERS, MOISTURISERS, SHAMPOOS AND DEODORANTS, AND ARE INTENDED TO EXTEND THE SHELF LIFE OF THE PRODUCT. CHEMICALLY SPEAKING, PARABEN IS AN ESTER, A COMPOUND MOLECULE FORMED FROM A COMBINATION OF ACID AND ALCOHOL. SINCE IT MIMICS ESTROGEN IN THE BODY, WHICH HAS BEEN LINKED TO BREAST CANCER AND REPRODUCTIVE ISSUES, IT IS CONSIDERED HARMFUL. SO IF YOU’RE ON THE HUNT FOR HAIR CARE THAT WILL ENSURE A HEALTHY SHINE, WHILE KEEPING YOUR SCALP IRRITATION-FREE, GIVE SA BY SAMIA A TRY BECAUSE IF THERE’S A NATURAL ALTERNATIVE TO AVOIDING SYNTHETIC PRESERVATIVES, WHY NOT?

SULFATE-FREE

SULFATES ARE CLEANSERS THAT CUT THROUGH OIL AND DIRT. BECAUSE THEY HAVE THE ABILITY TO ATTRACT WATER AND OIL, THEY CAN LIFT DIRT AND OIL FROM THE BODY AND RINSE IT DOWN THE DRAIN WHEN MIXED WITH WATER. BUT, PRODUCTS THAT CONTAIN SULFATES ARE OFTEN TOO GOOD AT THEIR JOB. THEY CAN WASH AWAY THE BENEFICIAL LAYER OUR SCALP CREATES AND NEEDS, WHICH LEADS TO LOSS OF MOISTURE. SULFATES CAN BE ESPECIALLY DAMAGING FOR CURLY HAIR TYPES. THIS IS BECAUSE IT TAKES LONGER FOR NATURAL OILS TO REACH THE TIPS OF CURLY STRANDS. IF YOUR HAIR IS ALREADY FRAGILE AND DAMAGED, OR YOU JUST WANT TO PREVENT GOING THERE, TREAT YOURSELF TO A GENTLE, SULFATE FREE HAIR CARE. MOISTURE IS YOUR HAIR’S BFF AFTER ALL, SO DON’T TRY TO BREAK THEM UP!

CHIC Eats

BRAZILIAN BEAUTY RODIZIO at CROWNE PLAZA DOHA - The Business Park knows the right way to shake a stick for an ultimate gourmet experience with bountiful helpings fit for royalty.

C

hurrascaria which roughly translates from the Portuguese` as ‘Barbecue’ is the style of Brazilian dining which can be traced back to the Gauchos and their use of open fires to cook meats on skewers. Each gaucho would then be served from the skewer directly onto a plate or slice of bread. Therefore something which was first designed to be rustic and a convenient way to eat for hardworking horsemen as they tended to cattle and other livestock has since been refined and adapted so that the cooking techniques and service create a sophisticate, convivial dining experience. Rodizio at Crowne Plaza Doha - The Business Park has developed a reputation for delivering consistently high quality, juicy, tender cuts of meat along with an array of à la carte dishes to delight diners. As a fully certified carnivore the prospect of dining at Rodizio made it difficult to contain my state of excited anticipation. Upon entering Rodizio I was immediately struck by the choice of deep fiery tones which gained inspiration from the charcoal and vivid flames reminiscent of a Gaucho camp, but, also mirroring the views of the open kitchen area. Deep reds and dark mahogany dominate the colour scheme along with traditional Portuguese inspired lanterns and illuminated panelling also emblazoned with patterns replicating flames. The feeling of decadence and drama was very apparent and complemented the menu perfectly. The Brazilian salad bar was brimming with fresh, colourful, crisp appetisers which would suit every palate. The variety and quality was superb particularly the gargantuan mussels and thoughtful additional garnishes such as fat, briny capers, toasted pine nuts and every leaf and pulse imaginable. My palate was tantalised and cleansed and ready to indulge... As with most Churrascaria, diners require a means of indicating how much more they are able to accommodate. Often when the eyes are presented with yet more mouth watering cuts of meat they will persuade the brain that the stomach can accommodate it, so, Rodizio has crafted traffic light style cards which indicate whether hosts should

keep the meat flowing or halt whilst you rest for a little while. So with green indicating ‘Go!’ we embarked upon our Latin exploration. The choice and quality of cuts was evident immediately as we were served Beef Tenderloin, Leg of Veal and Chicken Drumsticks. The sides were carefully selected to complement the rich, unctuous rotisserie offerings and inject ‘zest’ and ‘zing’ with Brazilian Fried Rice and deep fried Cassava illustrating just how unique Rodizio actually is! And so it continued … Leg of lamb , Beef Rib-Eye, Cubed Chicken seared on the skewers and more traditional Brazilian cuts of meat such as Picanha. Each mouthful was as tasty and well cooked as the next and it was with a heavy heart - but a very full stomach - that we flipped over our cards to red. Our Rotisserie experience almost at an end. However, with such elegant desserts as Coconut Dacquoise, Flan de Leite and Caramelised Corn with Cinnamon Custard those with a sweet tooth or just a love of fine food will be equally happy to end their visit with one of these beautifully presented, delectable delights. In addition to the plethora of expertly charred and seared offerings, Rodizio also caters for those wishing to select dishes from an à la carte menu. This would also be an option for those who may be pescatarians accompanying their carnivorous friends or those simply wanting a lighter option such as Chili shrimp and Citrus Salad or Beautifully spiced Bahia Style Jumbo Prawns. Rodizio is an elegant spot equally well suited to couples, families or corporate get togethers. The knowledgeable , exuberant hosts and array of elixirs created by the resident mixologists will top off an evening of pure gastronomic indulgence. MISS Ohlala

HOUSE OF HOLLAND

FASHION FRENZY MISS OHLALA TALKS ABOUT THE CONTROVERSY OF FASHION IN THE MEDIA AS OF LATE AND WEIGHS UP SOCIETY’S LEVEL OF BODY SHAMING . “Strike a pose, there’s nothing to it!”... is there? The shockwaves that were caused recently when a 5ft 3 inches tall 300 lb model adorned the cover of a very famous fashion magazine were felt throughout the industry, social media and dinner tables around the world. Was this due to her size? Was it to do with the potential health issues associated and glamorizing this? Were people in awe of her ability to ooze sex appeal despite being over double the average weight for a woman? This peaked my interest to muse about the implications of the fashion world and society as a whole. Within every faith the general consensus is that God loves infinite variety and man emulates this in the different forms he takes. However, in some circumstances , such as fashion, there is a necessity for regularity and a standard form. Models must provide a blank canvas upon which ‘artists’ can adorn textures, shades, vibrant hues and styles according to trend and season. Voluptuousness or obesity have never been something which has played a part in the world of haute couture where Size 0 reigns supreme. This may be down more to designers and stylists requiring this uniform figure in order to make ranges and new season lines for shows. Is it therefore more to do with logistics and business rather than a statement about body type or size? Although it can be damaging to create such unattainable physical icons, such as those in the fashion world, it can also be equally unhealthy to suggest that someone who is at an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and stroke should be heralded as a role model. Words such as ‘acceptance’, ‘celebration’ and ‘embrace’ pin balled around social media and news programmes and the debate that ensued was a fascinating insight into sizeism and how different groups are perceived in society. Naturally the usual suspects wagged fingers in the direction 98

www.ohlala-magazine.com

of lifestyle and fashion magazines, suggesting that a variety of shapes and sizes was just as important as colour or ethnicity. Fashion will always be about striving for the ideal in terms of design and quality. Models must be chameleon-like and be able to change their skins according to the designer or range. It is also imperative that there is a consistency and ‘standard’ with which designers can work. There are parameters set which allows them to showcase their work to the very best of their ability. Although this does not mean that the industry is suggesting that everyone should adhere to these parameters. Just the professionals whose job it is to bring fabric to life! Should we embrace difference and variety? Of course ! The problem comes when people go a step too far and create an issue when they are actually trying to dispel one. In trying to highlight something positive, due to lack of thought it becomes something negative and causes outrage instead of celebration or acceptance. If only it was as uncomplicated as Madonna originally suggested …
