Time flies when you’re having fun, or in my case getting married! Not only has my surname changed, but, there’s a notable new fashion season that’s already made itself well known, as codes of couture filtered through to the ready-to-wear collections this AW19 season. Plumes of feathers dominated the catwalks, with everything from beautifully created couture-like gowns, with elegant tufts of feathers, to outwear fringed with feathers. There was a notable split in how designers presented their autumn/winter 2019 collections this season. Traditional haute couture influences infiltrated many collections in New York and London, with exaggerated volume, couture dresses and stunning tailoring coming to the fore. Elsewhere, however, there seemed to be a shift towards more commercial, ‘shoppable’ presentations. Many designers seemed to place more emphasis on wearability this season, with covetable, catwalk-to-pavement looks reigning supreme. This wasn’t to say the AW19 collections were mundane but creativity was harnessed in a way which appealed to the many not the few. In other news, my basic inner self is pondering the question, “Where’s my Pumpkin Spiced Latte..?” Stay fashionable. Stay fabulous!

We’ve all been guilty of not taking off our makeup before bed or doing a bad job of removing it but it wreaks havoc on your skin and clogs your pores. It’s so important to give your skin a thorough clean and to spend at least ten minutes a night on a routine that includes cleanser, toner, eye cream a good serum and night cream. Even if you are super lazy, try leaving face wipes beside your bed so that you can ensure to take your make-up off.

DON’T OVERUSE PRODUCT With so many products to choose from these days it can be super overwhelming when choosing the right products. In terms of skincare, it’s always best to get back to basics and use products that work hard for you. Use a good cleanser that will clean your skin without stripping moisture, a serum that works for your skin type and moisturisers that address your skin’s needs (dryness, anti-ageing, oiliness etc).

KEEP IT CLEAN Unwashed make-up brushes are a breeding ground for bacteria that can cause nasty breakouts on your skin. Afra Beauty Centre has a very casual and welcoming vibe, what were your goals with creating a space like this dedicated to women’s beauty and do you feel that you have accomplished these goals to the standard you wanted? My main goal behind Afra Beauty Centre was to create an atmosphere that resembles my aura and personality; comforting, welcoming and natural. My goals and accomplishments are an ongoing cycle, and I am always setting new goals to achieve, no matter what. What is the story behind Afra Beauty Centre – how did it come into being? I’ve wanted to open my own beauty salon since I was a little girl... I started taking courses in my early 20s to excel in makeup, and the rest is all self-taught. I believe if you’re truly passionate about something you should pursue it no matter what! In your role specifically, what are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects? The most challenging aspect of my role would definitely be to set high standards that are uniquely recognised in such a competitive market and industry. As for the most rewarding, it would definitely be the community I’ve built through my career, I have a supportive and loving client base that are always inspiring me to keep doing what I love. In modern times when social media has taken over our every ritual and minute of the day, it’s important

to de-stress. Can you share with us a little bit about the brands and treatments you would recommend at Afra Beauty Centre that could help to ease stress… Other than a relaxing massage and moroccan bath, I believe our natural hair treatments are a must de-stress routine for all girls. Share with us the journey and passion for makeup – when did you get into it and what keeps you excited about the makeup industry? Since I was 13, I had an intense interest in makeup and beauty in general. I have taken multiple intensive makeup courses, including a makeup masterclass with Makeup Forever. After I excelled in the world of makeup, I started expanding and took courses in tattoo removal, lash lifting, and microblading in Lebanon. What are some of your personal and professional goals for Afra Beauty Centre for 2019? I can’t say, but I promise only the best. Truly living up to its name, Al Najada Hotel is a spectacular sight without even setting foot into the gorgeous Arabian architectural mastery. I decided to treat myself to a staycation in one of their 151 guest rooms and suites, where privacy is an ongoing paramount factor. Throughout their vast selection one can indulge themselves in the luxurious Al Najada Suite, split-level Duplex-suites or their exclusive rooms and suites perfect for larger families. Everything is intricately decorated and as I was shown around my 83sqm of Executive-Suite paradise I couldn’t believe my eyes at the king-size bedded room, seating area, bathroom and dining room. After a hectic work day utilising Al Najada’s complimentary Wi-FI, I enjoyed their 24 in-room dining option in the confines of my suite, wearing one of their plush dressing gowns and slippers whilst making use of the impressive Flat Screen TV; the perfect way to unwind, especially with their expansive list of dining options. We admonish you to try their decadent chocolate ice-cream, just ‘Wow!’ After waking up from my deep slumber on possibly the comfiest bed that I’ve ever experienced, I decided to indulge my senses for breakfast at their all-day dining restaurant, Al Baraha. My taste-buds were thankful for the food that was on offer as my eyes drank in the mosaic surroundings. The interior itself as you walk in is something of grandeur www.ohlala-magazine.com

and is simply mesmerising. As I was warmly welcomed and shown to my table I was thankful for the attentive flair of their staff. The attention didn’t stop there as I was made to feel like a VIP when I continued with my sensory experience making way to the private outdoor pool-area where I completed some lengths in the privacy of its surroundings. This was great fun and something that I should definitely be including more regularly in my exercise regime… It’s just a shame it won’t be in such expansive surroundings. Before heading off to the airport I decided to visit Canela Café. It’s important to note that this is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a mid-morning coffee, chatting over a business lunch or indeed savouring their Afternoon Tea created by their talented Pastry team. Canela, meaning cinnamon in Portuguese, is a key ingredient in the famous Portuguese custard tart, or “pastel de nata”, their signature pastry. Looking around you can see that it is specifically designed as a relaxed, social space where you can eat, meet and enjoy a work meeting that takes things to a whole new level. With various types of coffee, small bites and an array of sweet treats it is the perfect anecdote to your day. The calm ambience with lots of space to sit both inside on the laid-back furniture or outside on the terrace overlooking the piazza and Souq Al Najada will keep you returning. It is fair to say that my hunger pang was no more after my visit to Canela as I enjoyed my starters and main entrée as I basked in the delight that was the mouth-watering steamed salmon, accompanied by a selection of freshly steamed vegetables. You cannot help but awe over the presentation of each dish that is brought to your table and the 70

natural light flooding into the venue just heightens the atmospheric draw. Something that put a further â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;spring in my stepâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; was one of their detox drinks with its perfectly blended fusion of antioxidants an absolute must try. After my tasty lunch I unfortunately had to make use of my late check-out. Al Najada Hotel will never fail to impress no matter the occasion and it is duly renowned for always leaving a lasting memory with all the attributes of a dear friendsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; embrace. I will definitely be returning soon, and with that I was whisked by their private shuttle service to the airport. Highly memorable, and highly recommended. A MEAL WORTH A 1000 WORDS

When one thinks of experiencing it all, ZENGO is surely one of the names that comes up. It was about time we sent our Local Editor, ANUSHAY KHAN, to give this restaurant a go. We’re glad to say that Zengo roped in another foodie with hearts in her eyes…

ately, a lot of people were asking me to try Zengo because of the picturesque views it gives of the city. Well, you know the life of an editor; I do all the listings and sometimes, because of all the places I go to, we do tend to pick our favourites. I was honestly surprised that I have not tried this Richard Sandoval restaurant as Toro Toro was already one of my favourites in town. I really wasn’t sure what was the new thing that I could try at this place which wasn’t already presented. It was the same owner, right? Oh, how wrong, dear friends. The moment the doors opened; all I did was gasp. Let’s just say that my entire three hours session at this restaurant was a series of gasps throughout. Situated on the 61st floor of Kempinski Residence and Suites, Westbay, I was presented with one of the most beautiful views one could possibly imagine. I overlooked the city I have grown to love and couldn’t help and get posing for a few Insta and wallpaper worthy pictures. All the Insta stories and pictures I have seen of this restaurant and its view fall weak in front of the experience of being there itself. So, this is why its famous. I had already made up my mind that the view was the best that Zengo could be. Oh, don’t I love being wrong. The minute I was introduced to my 86

drinks I knew that I was going to be blown away. The presentation for something as simple as your drink can make such a huge impact, I learned this the day I was served at Zengo. My drink came decorated in a cage and adorned with a beautiful Lily, making it the most beautiful mocktail that I have had – until I had the second one which came in an aquarium looking box and I just sat there, thinking about the effort they put into a DRINK! Turns out, that was just the beginning. I feel like the staff at Zengo had made it their personal agenda to ‘Wow!’ me over this splendid evening. As the sun slowly set on an ordinary Tuesday evening, Zengo made it more than extraordinary with their exemplary food and presentation. My appetizers, which started with three different types of sushi included the spicy lobster and my favourite New Volcano, a papaya pomelo salad and a scallop ceviche served in a pearl, I couldn’t believe that every single dish was calling out to me. As I knew that there was more to come, the fried Maki rolls, the delicious wagyu beef tiradito, avocado and mango topped A5 wagyu roll and I had a hard time saying goodbye. Something as simple as pineapple with a blend of the sev could blow me away? I never thought I was THAT easy. Speaking of easy, have you ever cried tears of happiness over chicken shrimp gyoza? Well, I did this particular night. That and the cereal prawn had me licking my fingers and crying out of desperation for being unable to have more because who am I if I don’t absolutely fall head over heels in love with excellent food? The fact that every dish had its own distinctive flavours inspired from Asian roots and experimental notes with Peruvian cuisine which brought forth this culinary delight that surpassed my expectations. When the tiger prawns were presented and I tasted the buttery cheese on top, I could not help but take a serving which was bigger than the usual one. The beef short ribs melted at my touch and simply oozed of the classic BBQ glazing and I found myself begging the chef for the recipe. It is simply not fair to create divine food like this and not bestow us peasants with the recipe, I tell you! This was the first time in my life that I wasn’t even waiting for the dessert. If my culinary journey had gone to such heights with the first round of drinks, what could dessert possibly give me that I hadn’t already drooled over? Well, it apparently gave me honey comb cake that came with home-made caramel that popped in my mouth, honey ice cream that I tried for the first time in my sweet 29 years and a molten lava looking chili chocolate pudding that had Kashmiri chilli in it. Yep, you read that right and yep, your mouth watering is justified. From the warm, enhanced bite of the chocolate to the pop of caramel, the nitrogen smoke for the aesthetics and the biggest smile on my face; I was challenged to write this review because I was truly lost for words during my culinary expedition at this magnificent place. As the city lit up and announced my departure, I couldn’t help but wish I could pack all the servings and live through this experience again. NISSAN INTELLIGENT MOBILITY AND NISSAN SAFETY SHIELD 360 The new 2019 Maxima embraces the visionary Nissan Intelligent Mobility philosophy, which provides technology in a way that moves people to a better world. For Maxima, this includes the availability of Nissan Safety Shield 360, a suite of six advanced active safety and driver-assist technologies designed to help provide 360 degrees of active driver assistance, crash avoidance, and pedestrian detection. Safety Shield 360 includes Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian

Detection, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning, and High Beam Assist. In addition to Safety Shield 360, the 2019 Maxima also expands the availability of Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) and Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR).

REFRESHED EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR The Maxima’s aggressive, updated exterior appearance was created by Nissan Design America in La Jolla, California. It features a larger front grille with a deeper V-motion flow that carries into the hood and down the body to the redesigned rear tail lamps and rear fascia. The standard jewel-like LED headlights and Nissan Signature Daytime Running Lights add to the Maxima’s premium, high-performance appearance, along with the new, deep fascia design. The new rear fascia includes integrated quad-tip exhaust finishers, and a new sport rear spoiler is also added to the Maxima SR grade. In addition, drivers can opt for a new premium exterior paint colour, Sunset Drift. Inside, the dramatic Maxima body is a drivercentric cockpit and comfortable seating for all five occupants. Enhancing the Maxima’s already high level of quality and premium luxury appointments is a new seat insert pattern and charcoal headliner and pillars for SR grades. The SR grade features special Rakuda Tan semi-aniline leather appointments, similar to that available on the Nissan GT-R Premium Interior Package. The average woman spends 11 minutes a day putting on makeup. And there are reasons why you shouldn’t feel guilty for a single second of that. Our society has a long history with makeup. In fact, evidence of cosmetics dates back to 10,000 B.C. in ancient Egypt. Both men and women used ointments to clean the skin and cover up body odours. Kohl, a ground black mineral, was used to line the eyes to decrease sun glare and reduce the risk of eye infection (believed to be true at the time). Soon after, coloured clays and dyes began to rouge lips and stain nails. And we never stopped. So if “doing you” involves getting all dolled up with a dozens of different products every day, cheers to you! It can boost your confidence. You know the phrase “fake it till you make it”? Cosmetics can help you sell that. It can help you connect with other women. In other words, admitting “I use concealer too” can create a kind of cosmetic camaraderie among women — and maybe help you finally find your favourite foundation along the way. It can prepare you for “battle.” Just like we have certain clothes for working out and certain ones for going out, the idea of “putting on our face” with makeup can help prepare our mental mindset for whatever “battle” we are heading into. It can keep your skin protected. Makeup helps you to protect your skin and keep it safe from pollution, smog etc that harm your skin. Makeup creates a slight barrier around your skin to keep it from being directly exposed to dust. While makeup is not going to offer total protection, the risk of being harmed will at least remain minimal. It’s fun. Makeup isn’t all business, though. It also can be downright fun to create a brand-new look with a few simple pencils and palettes. It’s designated “you” time. We know you’re busy. But whether your morning makeup routine takes you four minutes or 40, that time is time you are spending on yourself — even if there are kids or furry animals vying for your attention every 30 seconds.

We see it all around us, especially on social media: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc. They are overflowing with makeup tutorials, pictures and videos showcasing amazing makeup skills. How is that affecting us? Lately, I see people criticising the makeup skills of others; they criticise people who like to wear bold makeup AND people who don’t wear any amount of makeup. Telling someone that they don’t look good without makeup can make people feel super insecure, but trying to stop a person from putting on makeup is also incredibly rude. I think it’s perfectly ok for people to never leave the house without it and for people to never wear any amount of it. Personally, I have a love/hate relationship with makeup. Ever since I was little, I liked everything about beauty and fashion. I love how it makes people feel beautiful and how you can use your creativity to come up with looks. 98
