Editor’s Letter And just like a blink, March is here. This month brings the season of colours and, in my opinion, the best weather of the entire year. It’s time to leave jackets and coats at home and step outside to enjoy the pleasant weather. The nice temperatures are a perfect match for our fashion month when we unveil the hottest trends of spring and summer 2022 (SS2022). Get ready for lots of dresses, tie-dye, crochet and more warm-weather staples (pg42). Still in the fashion department, we bring a selection of trends that perfectly fit this transitional period – we uncover for you the pieces that are keepers and styles to invest in (pg14). Our lookbook is all about the iconic automobile brand, Ferrari, and its stylish new model – the Portofino M. Enjoy its beautiful design and unique features (pg32). With the hot season comes new make-up and scents, we are ready to delve into new colourful shades to match the summer vibe (pg54). Our pampering session happened at Sharq Village & Spa; we got treated from head to toe at this enchanting Arabian gem (pg62). We bring tricks and ideas to help you with your spring-cleaning mission. Declutter your wardrobe to welcome the SS2022 pieces that you will end up purchasing (pg68). India can be a tricky destination, but Amal gives you a comprehensive guide to fully enjoy your trip to Mumbai (pg72). And as the foodies that we are, we pay another visit to Fuego at JW Marriott Marquis to confirm that it is still a great destination to enjoy delectable South American cuisine (pg76). Goodbye, winter. Hello, spring!

WHAT TO WEAR

WEEKEND MAX MARA

WITH: A WHITE SHIRT 5

2

A staple piece in any workwear wardrobe, a white buttoned shirt can go beyond the office environment. Here are some of our ideas: 1. This simple piece doesn’t have to be that plain. Carolina Herrera always introduces a white buttoned shirt to their collections and, this time, they come with volumed sleeves.

6

2. Play with layers and place your shirt under a mini dress with thin straps – a refreshing outfit that can be worn with tights and boots or with summer sandals. This item is from the Max Mara spring and summer 2022 collection. 3. Wear it with leggings or biker shorts and funky trainers – a casual and stylish way to transform this unimpressive top into a fashion statement. This pink footwear is from Balmain X Barbie special and limited collection. 4. With pool and beach season around the corner, you can wear your white shirt as a swimsuit cover-up. You can also add a midi skirt and heels to the look for a casual lunch with your girlfriends. This printed swimsuit is from Eres. 5. As you can spot in our spring and summer trends 2022 report, white on white is a cool summer style. Choose a high-waisted pair of tailored trousers for a sophisticated outfit. These bottoms are from the Etro spring and summer 2022 collection. 6. Follow the queen of style Victoria Beckham and pair your white shirt with flared jeans. A laid-back, timeless look! 24 www.ohlalamag.net

A Powerful Symbol of Style T

Cartier is introducing the latest addition to its collection of handbags, with its iconic image of the panther giving a salute to femininity and sophistication.

he Panthère de Cartier Bag is an elegant and luxurious accessory that adopts the classic Cartier symbol of the panther, originally created by Jeanne Toussaint when she was the luxury brand’s creative director in the 1940s. The magnetic figure of the panther thereafter went on to be an emblem of Cartier jewellery. The trapezoid-shaped bag embraces a minimalistic and structured design. The square flap, the strong but graceful handle and the rounded metal shape of a panther exude an image of femininity, power and sophistication with the purity and realism of its lines and the immaculate accuracy of its proportions. The C shape of the buckle was created in close collaboration between Cartier’s design studio and its High Jewellery sculptors. It reflects

the perfect physique of this majestic animal as it is accentuated by the spots of black lacquer, each differently sized, giving life, vitality and vigour to its shape. The classy bag, which has been made with the most advanced and intricate materials, can be worn over the shoulder or carried by hand. The design comes in two sizes, a small and a mini model, with a choice between four colours: black, cherry red, green or pale pink. All bags can be personalised for customers by adding initials or a special date, either hot-stamped in gold foil upon the bag or engraved on the interior mirror. The Panthère bag was designed in a studio located at the Cartier International Headquarters in Paris and led by Marlin Yuson, the artistic director.

The item is made of soft-touch coated TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) with the engraved MCM monogram and a woven co-branded lanyard. The Choco bag celebrates simplicity through irony and humour that characterises the brand’s attitude.

History of Style Maison Boucheron has launched the New Maharajahs Collection inspired by one of its extensive commissioned creations from the beginning of the 20th century.

48

www.ohlalamag.net

E

very well-known brand has its history marked by incredible moments. In 1928, Boucheron was commissioned to create a large and special order made by Maharajah Bhupinder Singh of Patiala. He brought iron safes full of diamonds, rubies, emeralds and pearls. Louis, son of Frédéric Boucheron, welcomed him and imagined 149 designs with the raw materials brought by the Maharajah’s entourage. In 2022, the house’s Creative Director, Claire Choisne, pays homage to this treasure by creating the New Maharajahs Collection, writing a fresh page of Boucheron’s History of Style. “In our archives, we have kept all the original designs from which I got my inspiration for this collection. I wanted to transpose these designs into the 21st century and to reinvent them for today’s Maharanis and Maharajahs,” says Claire.

In this Histoire de Style collection, ceremonial parures have become jewels reflecting one’s singularity. The creative studio has highlighted designs referring to elements that symbolise ancestral India, such as the lotus flower, turban ornaments and wedding bracelets. Traditional techniques such as glyptics, the art of engraving stones, are also incorporated into the new designs. The colours have faded into a monochrome metamorphosis and pared down from their original polychrome, from excess to delicateness. The Consecration of Emeralds set is the only colourful parure of the collection. It tells the story of the Maharajah of Patiala’s commission, but without the weight of history. The rest of the pieces are composed of diamonds, pearls, rock crystals, white gold and more monochromatic elements. The collection brings bracelets, necklaces, chokers, rings, earrings, brooches and hair ornaments — an opulent selection reflecting modern extravagance.

Celebration The Aloria collection reimagines Garrard’s signature sovereign motif with playful elegance.

50

G

arrard has crafted some of the most famous jewels of all time. In 1843, the maison was appointed the first Official Crown Jeweller, to the UK royal family, and has played an important part in British jewellery history ever since. In this new collection, the brand is shining light on their contemporary Aloria creations. The collection reinforces the message of strength, spirit and unity. The heart-shaped jewels captivate with their soft curves and radiance. Inspired by Garrard’s esteemed history of crafting versatile gems for royalty, these playful pieces can be paired and worn in various ways. The Aloria earrings, calibré cut gemstone rings and pendants are available in a rainbow of hues, with blue sapphire, yellow and pink sapphire, ruby, emerald and aquamarine, presenting a world of colourful possibilities. Versatility and wearability were central to the vision of Garrard’s designers for the collection, which also includes delicate diamond pendants and rings, alongside statement cocktail rings and diamond hair slides. “The Aloria collection epitomises Garrard’s design ideals: exceptional craftsmanship, vibrant gemstones and adaptability of design,” says Sara Prentice, Garrard’s Creative Director.

Chopard unveils a paradise of rare gemstones that pay tribute to nature, an endless source of inspiration to the maison.

JEWELLERY

T

he world of fine gems has been gifted new inspiration as Chopard’s Co-President and Artistic Director, Caroline Scheufele, presents the brand’s Exceptional Stones collection. Among these treasured stones is the Chopard Insofu Emerald, the most spectacular gem of them all – a 6,225-carat rough emerald mined in Zambia and the object of a traceability and responsibility process. Due to the exceptional purity and record size of the Chopard Insofu Emerald, specialists expect it to yield many high-quality cut stones, from which the Chopard workshops will create a collection of jewellery pieces. The collection brings precious stones brought back from the four corners of the Earth. It includes some unique specimens, such as a 3.01-carat, pear-shaped, D-Internally Flawless, type IIA diamond and a 4.22-carat, pear-shaped, fancy intense blue diamond – a rare carat weight for a stone of such colour. The duo is set on a majestic ‘Toi et Moi’ ring representing a unique symbol of the union of two equally beautiful gems. The 10.88-carat fancy intense pink diamond reflects the passion for coloured diamonds harboured by the maison’s creative soul that gives the name to the piece – Rose of Caroline. The radiant-cut diamond is placed in a Fairmined-certified ethical gold ring. A fancy dark grey-greenish, yellow diamond, that owes its Chameleon nickname to its ability to change colour depending on its exposure to light or heat, is a breathtaking 31.31-carat stone destined to be majestically set on a mischievous frog-shaped ring. Finally, the last ring is beautifully enhanced by a 21.04-carat, cushion-cut Ceylon sapphire. This unheated stone radiates a unique talisman-like charm thanks to a timeless setting, adorned with diamonds that accentuate its natural colour.

The French Way The fashion brand Celine is welcoming a new scent to their perfume collection. Rimbaud brings a pleasing mix of lavender and iris.

T

he Celine Haute Parfumerie adds Rimbaud to their day collection of fragrant bouquets. The fragrance embodies the themes of identity beyond gender and the essence of youth and fragility, as well as the French spirit and its cultural roots. It especially pays tribute to French literature and poetry, which are vital parts of the brand’s artistic vision. The character in this new scent is French poet Arthur Rimbaud, hence the perfume’s name. Created by Hedi Slimane, Celine’s Creative, Artistic and Image Director, it incorporates two important scents. Lavender’s aromatic grace and delicate freshness directly contrast with iris’ exuberance and robustness, creating an interesting paradox and duality, signalling introverted craftsmanship and olfactory fragility as the scent clings lightly to the skin. Lavender has been an ingredient in the brand’s perfumes since their Privée collection in 2004. With its vivacious and subtle textures, this element is the ultimate archetype for masculine fragrances. The flower is harvested in July and August and gives off its scent when blooming. The gentle and subdued scent of iris comes out beautifully in this edition. The orris, a specific part of the iris, is collected from the roots. It takes six years to obtain the essential oil known in perfumery as ‘Orris Butter’. The rarity of the crop and the time it takes to get this special essential oil make it all the more precious. The bottle’s rectangular shape is a salute to the French art of glassmaking. The shape is decorated on both sides with sharpedged fluting and adorned with a black lacquer cap. The design is infused with the beauty of art deco and minimalistic charm, and the aesthetic is inherited from 17th-century classicism. @celine

he beauty brand has introduced their new Fenty Icon Refillable Lipstick, a semi-matte refillable lip tint created to beautify everyday wear. Its motto is ‘Made to be Seen’, featuring the perfect lineup of high-pigment, low-maintenance reds and neutrals for anyone and everyone. “The new Fenty Icon shades are the bestof-the-best neutrals and reds that look gorgeous on everyone and feel so creamy and comfortable,” says Rihanna, the brand’s creator. The collection showcases seven neutral shades, including light pink nude, neutral pink nude, rose nude, mauve nude, cool taupe nude, chocolate and mahogany nude. The reds showcased in the collection include burgundy red, maple red and blue red. With this broad range of colours, everyone can find a shade to highlight their skin tone or fit their mood. Reds can be especially tricky. “We all know how hard it is to find the perfect red. That’s why it was so important to me that we had the ultimate red shade that looks amazing on everyone. After testing it on all skin tones and almost a year of tweaking to get it just right, we finally have our MVP (Most Valuable Player) – the blue red shade,” said the singer and businesswoman. Fenty Icon additionally offers a blend of comfort and luxury, so you will never have to choose between the two. The semi-matte, creamy formula hugs the lips with a smooth and plush texture with lasting wear and the classic and dazzling vanilla-peach scent – Rihanna’s favourite. The ingredients include hyaluronic acid, vitamins C and E to provide nourishment, and amino acid technology that gives the lips a fuller look. All lipsticks have a unique bullet shape inspired by Rihanna’s iconic Cupid’s bow that helps you apply the tinted balm with utmost precision. To top it all off, Fenty Icon is refillable for an unlimited supply and sustainable approach. Let it Glow Warm days by the Mediterranean Sea are CHANEL’s inspiration for their Spring-Summer 2022 makeup collection. 60

M

ademoiselle Gabrielle Chanel would enjoy the warm months of the year at her sanctuary home. The designer sweetly called the place La Pausa, which means the pause, located by the Mediterranean Sea in the south of France. The peaceful provençal villa was her refuge for relaxing moments. CHANEL’s Spring-Summer 2022 collection was inspired by the beauty of this legendary home. The light that embraces La Pausa during this time of the year is the central theme that guided the brand’s Makeup Creation Studio to create the new palettes. ROUGE COCO BAUME is the main release of this collection. A lip care product with unique sensory qualities, combining the colour provided by a lipstick with the moisturising benefits of a cream. Just like the villa, CHANEL’s latest lip balm is both chic and comforting. ROUGE COCO BAUME combines a moisturising active ingredient, shea butter, and three plant waxes at the heart of the Hydra Boost Complex, a signature ingredient of the ROUGE COCO line. The balms come in six shades, reflecting the image of the flowers that grow around La Pausa. The eye makeup creations are infused with the soft, sunlit hues of the landscape surrounding the villa. The new LES 4 OMBRES includes a khaki brown colour accompanied by gold and copper shades evoking the dazzling sunlight of the Côte d’Azur. This light also paints the golden beige shade of OMBRE PREMIÈRE LAQUE. The two BLUSH LUMIÈRE exclusive creations are designed in shades of coral pink and terracotta brown to warm up the complexion and leave it glowing. For a complete sun-kissed look, BAUME ESSENTIEL subtly illuminates the face, creating the effect of a holiday spent in the sun. The LE VERNIS line embraces the yellow walls and softly sunlit, tiled terracotta floors of the villa. CHANEL collections are available at Fifty One East. P

eace, purity, and pampering sum up my afternoon in The Spa at Sharq Village. If you’ve never visited, the place is modelled on a traditional Qatari village and steeped in modern luxury. After seven years in Doha, this is my first time stepping foot inside, and I’m excited in anticipation. Entering the spa through the wooden doorframe, you see large clay pots in each corner, beautiful copper plates on the walls and many traditional fabrics. The spa reception contains an expansive central feature, filled with smooth pebbles and crystal-clear water. Look up, and you’ll see a ceiling designed around mangrove beams supported by wooden colonnades around the water, under a wide, open skylight. It feels peaceful, with natural materials and warm colours. The reception staff greet me warmly, and show me to a changing area of all dark wood, tall beams and straw baskets. Ningnong, my therapist, meets me once I’m gowned and slippered, and introduces herself with a smile. She guides me through the spa, passing the beautiful sauna and steam room, and the sun-dappled relaxation area facing the outdoor pool. We step outside and reach my therapy room through attractive little open-air courtyards and corridors.

My room is like a welcoming Arabic home with pretty lampshades and woven carpets. The sofa’s Bedouin-style fabric is soft to touch, and the highpile carpet coddles my feet before I’m treated to a heavenly foot soak and scrub, followed by a relaxing massage for my tired soles. First comes the spa’s new 90-minute Body Fortifying Massage, targeting aching muscles with deep pressure using hot volcanic stones – a first for me! Ningnong smooths steaming rocks across my back and legs. It feels tingly and intense. She follows each section of my body with a massage, working deeply on the knots around my shoulders and lower back. The citrus and menthol in the massage oil refresh and revitalise my tired bones, and active stretching between the stones and the massage promotes suppleness. My mind drifts to my surroundings – crisp, silky white sheets, a soft mattress, pleasant temperature and calm classical music. I can hear birds outside in the private courtyard, and notice the soft glow of a single shaft of sunlight. I really could do this every Thursday afternoon.

Ninety minutes fly by. In my post-massage invigoration, I opt for a 60-minute Youth Renewing Facial. Ideal for skin looking tired from pollution and suffering from fine lines - the perfect Doha antidote! Komang, my facial therapist, explains that they use Amala products, a brand with decades of experience rooted in the German alpine region. The main ingredient for the Rejuvenate range used in my facial is cocoa laced with both pre and probiotic infusions. Excellent for firming skin and an effective remedy for uneven texture and dehydration. Komang first applies a delightfully scented jasmine cleanser, followed by a cocoa bean toner, then a soft jasmine and fig exfoliant scrub. Fruity and delicious, the scent is divine! I’m then spoiled by a jojoba oil face massage and start to feel lighter, my skin clean as a whistle. The algae mask hydrates and purifies, after which Komang delicately applies hyaluronic serum, youth-renewing powerhouse face cream, and finishes with a touch of velvet shea butter lip balm. Utterly fantastic. Properly pampered, my skin is pure and my tired muscles at peace. What a heavenly feeling. This is a true Arabian sanctuary, to which I will certainly return.

WARDROBE MAKEOVER With the turning of the season and the coming of spring, many of you will be looking to reorganise your wardrobes. We spoke to Shelina Jokhiya from DeCluttr Me to provide you with the best guide to this task.

68

B

efore even thinking about how to reorganise your wardrobe, you must think about decluttering. According to Shelina from DeCluttr Me (a company of professional organisers that help to declutter and arrange homes and offices) decluttering isn’t only about transforming your space but also your mental health. A build-up of clutter and possessions can become a significant source of stress; tackling it properly enables people to live more relaxed, motivated, and productive lives. Studies published in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin have shown that minimalistic exercise helps lessen the likelihood of depression, while studies conducted by Princeton University have shown decluttering leads to reduced stress and increased focus. Plus, donating your clothes to people who may need them is highly sustainable and contributes to an attitude of giving and can help you appreciate the things you do have even more. Shelina recommends using the: “Buy one, get rid of two rule: when you buy something new, get into the habit of clearing out two existing items (preferably in the same bracket as what you have purchased). So, if you buy one dress, declutter two dresses from your wardrobe.” She recommends: “Decluttering every quarter to clear space in your wardrobe and reviewing your winter clothes every year as you’re unlikely to need 20 thick jumpers in this region. Place the winter clothes you want to keep in boxes or unused suitcases on the top shelf of your closet.” Categories The central question for many when it comes to wardrobes is the determining factor for ordering their things. Should one go by style? Colour? Type? Shelina says it all comes down to personal preference. One must be able to determine what is most important to them. She says: “It is all about how people live their day-to-day lives. So, if they do a lot of sports or go to the office, those clothes should be the ones that are easily accessible. Once the items are categorised, they can be arranged by colour and then style. Additionally, when doing it by colour, you can clearly see what you have too much of, as well as any colours that are an anomaly and can be removed. Don’t make the systems too complicated. Instead, aim to keep your categories simple so that you can find any item in five seconds.”

www.ohlalamag.net

69

Shoes: A girl’s best friend When it comes to these very prized and delicate companions of ours, we often get stuck at deciding where to place them. Again, Shelina says it is up to each individual. “Some prefer them to be in their closet, especially fancier shoes. I prefer mine to be by the door in a shoe cabinet, so it’s quick and easy to find shoes for my outfit before I leave the house.” So, since most of us have some very special pairs and since we tend to pile up shoes in the shoe cabinet where they can get damaged and dusty, it may be best to store that special footwear in the wardrobe where they are safe and leave other everyday wear in the shoe cabinet by the door.

Little treasures For most, outfits are not just the clothes we wear; they are also the jewellery, watches, scarves, and ties we adorn ourselves with. It is, therefore, important we keep a special place for them in our wardrobes. Shelina recommends compartmentalising to keep these items organised and in order: “If you have space to have accessory dividers in your drawers, then use them, as they can be very helpful when organising your accessories. Use boxes or drawers for belts, scarves and shawls, and jewellery boxes for jewellery. Always try to repurpose storage solutions from things you already have rather than spending money on new ones.”

70

www.ohlalamag.net

OHLALA

Homes

No hanging space? For those who have very minimal or no hanging space, Shelina recommends prioritising items and controlling your purchases: “Obviously buy less, so you have less to fit in the wardrobe. Then, if you have shelving or drawers, fold tops, T-shirts, trousers and jeans and put them in these spaces. Leave any hanging space you do have for dresses, suits, blazers and abayas.” Efferve-scent Scents can be the cherry on the cake when it comes to our wardrobes and can put us in a great mood when opening those closet doors. Shelina recommends using “perfumed wax tablets or lavender sachets” to make sure the storehouses of our most precious items are well-fragranced.

No drawers? For those unfortunate enough to not have any drawers in their wardrobes, Shelina urges you to opt for storage containers and boxes: “If you have shelves, use boxes to store your clothes neatly. The boxes act like surrogate drawers. If you have a lot of hanging space, hang your tops, trousers, dresses, etc. The only things that shouldn’t be hung are woolly and delicate items.” For most women, long precious gowns and beautiful party dresses are part of their attire and must be stored safely in the wardrobe. For these prized items, Shelina recommends you: “Double hang using two hangers or fold them in half and hang.”

M

umbai is famous – or infamous, some might argue – for its overcrowded streets, the headache-inducing bustle of cabs and rikshaws, its suffocatingly polluted air and its loudmouthed inhabitants. On the brighter side, it is also known for its piquant and delectable curries and chicken tikkas imbued with aromatic spices, colourful saris, active film industry, and vibrant festivals. The city, once an archipelago of seven islands, is saturated with a rich historical past. The Elephanta Caves is a primary example of this. Located on the small island of Gharapuri, the 5th-century caves showcase the sevenmetre masterpiece named Sadashiva, flaunting three carved faces of the Hindu Lord Shiva. The city’s most prized monument is the grandiose Gateway of India, which was erected in 1911 to commemorate the landing of King George V and his wife Queen Mary. The Gateway was finished years later in 1924 and was thereafter utilised as a symbolic formal entrance to India for the Viceroys and the new Governors of Bombay. The Taj Mahal Palace [hotel], an admired national landmark and renowned architectural gem, towers the Gateway in the background, with its pinkish, rust-coloured domes emanating a sense of Indian tradition, resilience and charm. Mumbai is esteemed for its collection of architectural and historical buildings, recognised as World Heritage sites by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee held in Bahrain in 2018. The buildings were thereafter named the Victorian and Art Deco Ensemble of Mumbai.

www.ohlalamag.net

73

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus is a prime example of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture fused with classic Indian designs and is one of the buildings listed in the Victorian Ensemble, making it a UNESCO World Heritage site. Built from 1878 to 1887, its name changed from Victoria Terminus in 1996 as a way for the Indians to go back to their roots. Opposite the station is the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, known as BMC, another Victorian UNESCO site, built in 1865. Seen towering above the two buildings is the Rajabai Clock Tower, another UNESCO site, more than 140 years old and standing at a height of 85m radiating an image of everlasting strength. The Art Deco buildings of Mumbai feature the second largest collection of Art Deco sites in the world, after Miami. The sites are mainly located on the east side of the Oval Maidan. These include the Eros Cinema, Marine Drive (a seafront and promenade also known as the Queen’s Necklace), as well as privately owned residences. St. Thomas Cathedral and Fort was built over 300 years ago and visited by the King and Queen in 1911. Nearby lies the Flora Fountain, built in 1864 of Portland stone and named after Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers and spring, whose statue adorns the top of the fountain. Apart from St. Thomas Cathedral, Mumbai houses many other religious places of worship, including the famous Haji Ali Dargah, a 400-year-old floating complex and a prized sanctuary for the Muslims in the city. The Shree Siddhivinayak Ganpati Mandir and Shree Mahalakshmi Mandir are of equally great importance to local communities who frequent these cherished monuments, built in 1801 and 1831 respectively. An absolute must-visit, especially for those enthusiastic about modern Indian history, is Mani Bhavan, a modest two-storey building, located on Laburnum Road, known as the ‘epicentre of India’s struggle for freedom’. It was originally the office of the heroic leader Mahatma Gandhi between 1917 and 1934 and is now a museum and memorial dedicated to the great liberator.

74

www.ohlalamag.net

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, formerly the Prince of Wales Museum, is another impressive location as well as an Indo-Saracenic Victorian World Heritage site, featuring artefacts from the Indus Valley civilisation, Buddhist sculptures from the Maurya Empire and jewellery pieces from the Mughal Empire. Other museums include the Dr Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum and the RBI Monetary Museum. For art lovers and appreciators, head down to the National Gallery of Modern Art (a Neo-classical Victorian World Heritage site) and the Jehangir Art Gallery, where you will find installations featuring well-known local and international artists. Mumbai is a place full of people with different ethnicities and backgrounds. You will find a blend of multiple communities, including Hindus, Parsis, Muslims, Sindhis and Gujaratis. Hence, there is no dearth of cuisines and restaurants. For a taste of traditional food, visit Café Madras, Shree Thaker Bhojanalay, and Lotus Restaurant. A host of classic vintage Mumbai cafés is still functioning in the city, such as Leopold Café. Established in 1871, this endearing nook possesses a certain charm and offers a splendid mix of different cuisines. Others include Café Churchill and Britannia & Co. Mumbai’s famous Iranian cafés and bakeries include the iconic B. Merwan & Co., Kyani & Co., and Yazdani Restaurant & Bakery. For special road-side snacks and fried goodies, visit Khau Galli, where you will find anything from charcoal-grilled corn on the cob, roasted peanuts in newspaper cups, fresh cane juice, frankies and toasties, samosa, bhel puri, pau bhaji, and yummy sandwiches. Check. And don’t forget to try hot masala chai while you are at it. March is a good month to be in this vibrant city packed with festivities and fun events, including The Jio MAMI, Mumbai’s renowned film festival taking place from March 11 to 15, as well as the Holi Festival of Colours, an ancient Hindu celebration of spring where people come together in the streets and throw paint on each other, taking place on March 18. The Ganpati festival and Diwali are other important festivals taking place in September and October respectively. While you’re there, be sure to check out the many heritage walks, bike tours and private tours for you to enjoy, including a Bollywood tour! www.ohlalamag.net

In an exploration of distinct flavours, Homara Choudhary discovered an authentic taste of South America on her visit to Fuego.

L

ocated on the first floor of the JW Marriott Marquis City Center Doha, in the heart of the city, lies one of Qatar’s best kept secrets. Derived from the Spanish word fire, Fuego brings you a melting pot of Latin American flavours. Situated in a dark, sumptuous setting, this beautiful restaurant offers mouth-watering cuisine from all over South America. Our server Rahul, who arrived in Doha six months ago, carefully went

through the menu with us. He was as excited about working in this unique city as we were about the food. The Head Chef, Dina Moran, visited our table to give her suggestions. At her recommendation, for the appetisers, we opted for the Provoleta. A seared Italian provolone cheese. It was served with a spicy traditional Argentinian chimichurri sauce. A perfect combination for this creamy cheese that had a hint of garlic and oregano. It was complemented with a multigrain sourdough bread and tasted heavenly.

The Taco de Camaron arrived shortly after. This was a light soft taco with tempura prawns, red cabbage and guajillo chilli mayonnaise, lightly garnished with coriander. Fully complemented with smashed avocado on the side. It is little wonder that this dish is one of their best sellers. The Japanese mayonnaise combined with the crispy texture of the prawns and the Peruvian Amarillo chilli sent my tastebuds into overdrive. A real crowd-pleaser. The Anticucho de Pollo was equally divine. The five traditional Peruvian chicken skewers arrived with soft and crispy roasted potatoes, topped with Anticucho sauce. The grilled chicken was tender and fell off the skewers. It had been marinated in Peruvian spices, including smoked paprika and yoghurt. The fusion was sublime.

There were eight mains to choose from, with a particular focus on meat and a special butchery selection. The steaks are all imported from the US. Chef Dina recommended the popular 12oz Ribeye. It was served with the traditional chimichurri sauce but you can also have it coupled with mushroom or peppercorn sauces, should you wish. As promised, the meat was succulent and juicy with a crispy layer of fat. It had been cooked to perfection. The Hamburguesa was an 8oz Angus beef patty in a delicious soft brioche bun. It contained a slice of provolone cheese and beef bacon and what the menu describes as ‘chunky egg sauce’. Already feeling fairly full from our appetisers, I requested the beef bacon and egg sauce to be replaced with salad. It arrived with a portion of French fries. This may be the best posh burger in town and was worth every calorific bite.

78

www.ohlalamag.net

There wasn’t much room for dessert, but our server Rahul insisted we tried the Peruvian Cocoa Torta Umida. He assured us we wouldn’t be disappointed. He was right. This little plate of heaven was an 80% Peruvian cocoa brownie served with Chantilly cream and milk ice cream. The perfect end to what was a perfect meal. I am not sure how it took me so long to discover Fuego, but I will definitely be going back. If only to try my favourite Tres Leches cake that I spotted but had no room for at the end of the night. An exquisite spot for an intimate dinner or special occasion. It is worth noting that Fuego has a variety of special promotions, including a Friday Brunch and a ‘Sip N Savour’ happy hour from 5pm to 8pm every night. MISS

Put Your Records On And roll up your sleeves to embrace the season of organising and cleaning up your home and, why not, your life! March is the month when winter leaves us, and spring shows up with its beautiful colours. The season is a synonym of flowers, new beginnings, and the perfect time to declutter your home, wardrobe, and personal life. It’s time to wave goodbye to old rags and embrace fabulous new pieces to flaunt around, now that we are more encouraged to get out of the house and enjoy a reinvigorated social life. According to Oxford Dictionaries, the expression 'spring cleaning' means an occasion when you clean a house or room wholly and carefully, including the parts you usually ignore in your daily tidy-up. The habit of giving a good clean and organising the home during this period dates back centuries and is adopted by many cultures. In some parts of the world, winters can be harsh and create mould, and we also tend to wash things such as coats and duvets a lot less. It is also a fact that during darker winter months, our bodies end up producing more melatonin, a hormone that sees its levels rise in the evening and helps to promote sleep. Even in this part of the world, where we endure a really mild winter, the days are shortened. As days lengthen, we are left with more energy. So, open your windows (at least until the heat hits us) and shake out the dust – dancing and moving to the sound of your favourite tunes!
