Editor’s Letter With the cooler weather comes the wedding season. November is when the wedding bells, and 'here comes the bride' chanting happens with more frequency. The bridal period usually goes until May, when the weather starts to heat up. Inspired by the theme, we spoke to a wedding florist to get a glimpse of natural decoration (pg70). With fewer Covid-19 restrictions, the celebrations are getting bigger and back to hotel ballrooms (pg72). Our Style Focus pages are dedicated to traditional white dresses, pearly nontraditional options, and essential accessories (pg18). Still in the fashion mode, Qatar Museums is bringing an exciting exhibition to Doha this month; the historical creations will stay in town until March 2022 (pg36). Our love for jewellery is expressed in a stunning spread from an iconic brand and its latest collection (pg38). Beauty enthusiasts will fall in love with our selection of gorgeous new make-up and irresistible scents (pg52). And for our spa treatment, we bring a Hammam session, a must-experience therapy in this part of the world (pg64). We dine at a Japanese hot spot known globally for a taste of exquisite fusion (pg80) and end our journey riding an exceptional vehicle (pg86). I hope you enjoy our company!

Getting married in a white dress is part of most little girls’ dreams. Be it a big ball gown or a sleek structure, the dress is one of the most important elements on the wedding day. It also says a lot about the bride’s style – an A-line dress is all about modern elegance, while a boho dress brings a laid-back vibe to the aisle. Which bride are you?

Nowadays, mostly in smaller celebrations, some brides don’t want to make the event all about the dress or even don’t feel comfortable in one. They end up choosing different structures such as jumpsuits, suits or even different top and bottom compositions. We have a few ivory options to inspire your non-traditional bridal look.

We turn our attention to the ladies on the guest list, and dresses are certainly the most popular pick when attending a wedding. For day parties, women tend to go for a shorter length, while at evening functions, long frocks are the order of the day. Just avoid black and obviously white, which should only be worn by one lady – the bride.

STYLE

The perfect jewellery to pair with your wedding gown is the style that reflects you. If you like chunky items, go for it, but opt for delicate details if you don’t. For a harmonious look, find bridal jewellery that complements the shade of your wedding dress. White gold or platinum jewellery looks best with more ‘true white’ dresses, while yellow gold or rose gold works well with warmer white gowns.

OHLALA ICYMI

New, exciting, and exclusive collections are the highlights of this month. With a reminder that the year is approaching its end – the festive season is on its way!

Different Perspective

Stella McCartney presents Stella Shared 3, a capsule collection of conscious unisex staples exploring shared values and aesthetics. The British fashion house offered its platform to three creative forces: Ed Curtis in London, Maisie Broome (Myfawnwy) in New York City and Tom Tosseyn in Antwerp, forming a collective and a collection. With a clubkid perspective blending fantasy and reality, their prints are featured on iconic Stella archetypes. The palette pairs neutrals with youthful bursts of colour, including patterned eccentrically clashing classics with contemporary fantasies. "For my McCartney A to Z Manifesto, I shared my platform with next-gen artists who interpreted our values through their visions. Stella Shared 3 continues this spirit of collaboration today, remixing Stella pieces with prints by incredible talents of tomorrow – collectively advancing by sharing our skills, resources and communities," says Stella McCartney.

OHLALA ICYMI From Fashion to Beauty

The luxury fashion house Valentino is exploring new grounds with its Valentino Beauty enterprise. The make-up line was officially launched at the brand's Rendez-Vous Fashion Show in Paris in October. Pierpaolo Piccioli, Valentino's Creative Director, is behind the new beauty concept, and he believes that beauty is permeated by harmonised imperfection and liveliness, not static or controlled. The line is robust, offering several different finishes, shades, and versions of many products in the collection. Along with standards like foundation and lipstick, it offers eyeshadow palettes, liners in bright hues, pigments and even two different types of glitter.

Iconic Style

Inspired by Karl Lagerfeld's signature looks, the Karl by Karl capsule is an exclusive, gender-neutral collection that pays homage to the designer's unmistakable silhouette. The selection is a tribute to this fashion legend, ranging from tailored pieces, sophisticated outerwear and key accessories like fingerless gloves, bags and fans, to crisp white shirts and a tunic made in sustainably sourced organic cotton. The capsule has been curated by Carine Roitfeld, Style Advisor of the Maison Karl Lagerfeld, and designed by Hun Kim, the brand's design director. The collection is available to shop at select Karl Lagerfeld stores and online at www.karl-me.com

OHLALA ICYMI For Middle Eastern Fashionistas

Coach has introduced Signature Leather, a collection created exclusively for the Middle East. The special line features the house's iconic Signature pattern embossed on polished pebbled leather and the womenswear collection includes the timeless Willow and Tyler silhouettes. You also find an assortment of small leather goods in a black, oxblood and dove grey palette within the line. The campaign has been shot by Polish fashion and portrait photographer, Mateusz Stefanowski and features Lana Al Baik, a Palestinian-Syrian model, and French-Iranian digital creator, Parvane Barrett. The campaign translates the energetic vibe of Coach's hometown, New York City, and shows off the brand's spirit of inclusiveness and creativity.

Merry Time

Salvatore Ferragamo puts us in the festive mood with its Holiday 2021 collection and the It's Movie O'Clock campaign. The joyful line takes us into the winter holidays, celebrating the warmth of friendship. It's Movie O'Clock is a portfolio of photos and videos dedicated to this magical period. The concept of the visuals is an imaginary Italian villa that could be anywhere, just like home is when it's shared, and the young stars of the campaign getting together for dinner and movie night. Ferragamo invites us to pause and notice the details, gestures, smiles and hugs because they form the whole picture and make the difference. The highlights in the women's collection are tailored and minimalist articles paired with bold accessories such as mules and boots with an F heel covered in glitter. Bags with new shapes in lamé or Flamingo Pink leather add extra sparkle. A selection of eye-catching add-ons to your classic looks.

The new collection Sixième Sens Par Cartier illustrates the profound understanding of the emotional power of high jewellery reflected in necklaces and rings.

C

artier’s timeless creations with exceptional artistry have given life to one of its most recognisable pieces, The Love Bracelet, and incredible intrinsic jewels such as Maria Félix’s Crocodile Necklace. Cartier is a responsible jeweller, constantly striving to improve its tradition of excellence and develop its ethical, environmental and social practices and commitments. Sixième Sens Par Cartier is an expression of art with the power to move like no other. While contemplating the collection, you are caught between surprise and wonder, and the gaze is captured, absorbed, and lost in the fascinating depths of 1,000-year-old stones. With a stylised feline interpretation, organic textures and shards of coloured light, shimmering gems electrify in hues of ripe fruits that summon up scents of distant paradises. The unique jewels use a series of techniques to mesmerise, such as trompe-l’oeil, a clever painting method to trick people into thinking that the objects represented in it are there, as well as graphic patterns and optical illusions. The collection also brings compositions that play with earthly gravity in radiant transfigurations of reality. The pieces quiver in the light and come to life upon contact with the skin. By challenging our perceptions, this collection leads us into a world of sensory stimulation. Each sense comes alive, including the sixth sense – a staggering feeling of emotion that touches the heart. The Phaan Ring brings the beauty of an 8.20-carat ruby, integrating groups of triangular diamonds that catch the light and illuminate the central red element. The Meride Necklace is composed of diamond, onyx and rock crystal to form a hypnotic checkerboard. The Pixelage Necklace conjures the image of a panther, so dear to Cartier. Polished onyxes evoke the marbling of the fur, while white, yellow and orange diamonds represent the thickness of the pelt, with their golden reflections highlighted by three captivating golden topazes. The Parhelia Ring has a 21.51-carat sapphire cabochon with an intense blue hue. Around it, five parentheses of radiant diamonds and emeralds reflect the light, fanning out like the surface of a lake. The Alaxoa Necklace is an elegant drop of emeralds cascading with the suppleness of living material, as diamond accents bring a fleeting sparkle to each movement. The Sharkara Necklace plays with variations of the same hue bringing tourmalines and coloured sapphires in a rainbow of pinks illuminated by the brightness of orange garnets and diamonds. The last piece, the Coruscant Necklace, is a vibrant testament to the enchanting power of diamonds. It features six different cuts – kite, octagonal, emerald, triangle, baguette and brilliant, reflecting light from a unique angle. To be the ambassador of the collection, Cartier borrowed the natural beauty of Golshifteh Farahani. Golshifteh is an accomplished actor, singer, and musician. In her 20-year career, she has made her mark on the red carpet, known for her style and elegance. Her multi-faceted personality makes her the perfect embodiment of Cartier High Jewellery, which draws its inspiration from a diverse and multicultural heritage.

Happy Sport is Chopard’s casual yet sophisticated timepiece that has been launched in an ideal size inspired by nature to best suit a woman’s wrist.

C

hopard’s iconic Happy Sport watch is now appearing in an optimally comfortable 33mm diameter case inspired by the golden ratio principle of aesthetic harmony. Pursuing its commitment to a constant quest for balance, Chopard is endowing its icon in this daintier size. Designed to accompany women in all their day-to-day activities, the Happy Sport is a watch that must feel pleasant to wear, like a second skin in every situation. Seven new references are joining the collection in various models: four twotone featuring a Lucent Steel A223 case embellished with ethical 18-carat rose gold, and three entirely crafted from ethical 18-carat rose gold, available on a leather strap or metal bracelet. An eighth version is also available in ethical 18-carat white gold, completely set with diamonds. They all beat to the rhythm of the Chopard Manufacture 09.01-C movement with automatic winding, and each dial is graced with the legendary dancing diamonds. Happy Sport models epitomise the noble legacy of casual-chic style with five freedom-loving dancing diamonds set between the two sapphire crystals topping the dial. Invented by Chopard in 1976, the dancing diamonds adorning the Happy Sport watch collection have revolutionised women’s relationship with time. They no longer simply read the time but instead contemplate the ever-changing choreography of the diamonds whirling around the watch. The Tunisian actress Dorra Zarrouk has joined the Chopard family as one of the faces of the Happy Diamonds campaign. “When someone is wearing a Chopard piece, one feels particularly chic. What I like the most about it is that while this watch is very elegant and luxurious, it is not only suited to big events, but I can also pair it with my daily outfits. Most of all, it is timeless: I feel like a mother could pass on her Chopard watch to her daughter or her granddaughter, and it will never date,” says Dorra.

Eternal Brilliance

The new Tiffany & Co. timepiece, Tiffany Eternity, is a reminder to live in the ‘now’, reinforcing the house’s authority and heritage in offering the world’s best diamonds.

iamonds are said to be a girl’s best friend, and there are certainly never too many. Tiffany & Co. has announced a new addition to its diamond watch portfolio, Tiffany Eternity. A sparkly and precious timekeeper to make sure you are present and appreciating every minute. Each hour marker has 12 different diamond shapes: round brilliant, baguette, cushion, Tiffany True, marquise, Asscher, heart, pear, oval, emerald, triangle and princess. This display of mixed-cut diamonds is inspired by a series of vintage Tiffany & Co. advertisements from the 1960s and ‘70s. The Tiffany Setting engagement ring inspires the watch’s crown. Adopting the classic six-prong

setting, the diamond crown complements the halo of stones that encircle the case. From constructing the case to setting each sparkly gem by hand, Tiffany’s artisans in Switzerland spend over 13 hours crafting each watch. The eye-catching piece is available in 28mm and 32mm iterations and 18-carat rose or white gold. It is water-resistant with an atmospheric pressure tolerance of three atm and is powered by a quartz movement. Each Swiss-made Tiffany Eternity watch comes with both a black grosgrain strap and a black alligator strap. Embellish your wrist with a timepiece that not only shines like a diamond but is encrusted with them.

Find Your Voice Valentino Beauty brings a new scent to its perfume portfolio, Voce Viva Intensa. The fragrance is an ode to the power of self-expression.

I

magined as an invitation to the world to share differences, Valentino's Voce Viva fragrance line celebrates the power of a voice to inspire. That message is heightened with a new scent, Voce Viva Intensa. The perfume brings the power of imagining a better world to inspire others and help each find their own way. With Voce Viva Intensa, Valentino imagines a voice with new resonance, optimism, confidence and determination. Valentino Beauty called on perfumers Honorine Blanc and Amandine Clerc Marie to interpret Voce Viva with fresh resonance. They were in charge of magnifying the original scent with confidence, charisma and determination, following the house's three accords: colour, couture and cool. Colour - Head Note Luminous, fresh citrus take-off enlivened by pear accord. Harvested in Calabria, Italy, a radiant, sparkling lift of bergamot essence with gently tangy Italian mandarin essence awakens the senses. A green, textured pear accord gives a crunch to these citrus notes. A colourful, energised opening to reveal the wearer's charisma and optimism. Couture - Heart Note An iconic bouquet of white flowers reveals new intensity with jasmine sambac. Symbol of radiant, solar femininity, orange blossom absolute is explored to its extremes radiating and liberating its opulent and rich sides. Jasmine sambac supports this powerful femininity with its suave facet. Golden gardenia accord illuminates this bouquet of white flowers with fruity and spicy notes. Cool - Base Note Unexpected crystal moss accord strengthened with Texan cedarwood. Crystal moss accord brings its mineral and woody elements complemented by a dry and warm Texan Atlas cedarwood that amplifies this crystal overdose. To finalise, soft Madagascar vanilla absolute warms the trail with a mellow note. A robust scent to intensify the wearer's strength and determination. Lady Gaga is the face of Voce Viva Intensa. She is an icon, the voice of a generation and a movement. Having found her calling, she lives her full creative power, turning her unique energy to defend respect for individuality and continues to amplify the voices of those without. @valentino.beauty

BEAUTY Focus WELCOME TO THE

JUNGLE Explore your wild side with Roberto Cavalli’s intense and lavish new fragrances. An ode to the brand’s animal print signature.

T

he fashion house Roberto Cavalli is known for its love for animal prints and bold designs. The brand’s passion for wild beasts is transferred to Cavalli’s new scents Velour Saffron and Wild Incense. The perfumes explore the olfactory landscape of leathery, woody and spicy notes – drawing inspiration from the animal kingdom to capture the quintessence of Roberto Cavalli. The two fragrances extend the Gold Collection and its six original eaux de parfum. The zebra is the inspiration for Velour Saffron, which offers a duality of velvety smoothness and pure strength. The scent draws on the elegant nature of saffron – sublimating the precious spice with intriguing black pepper oil for a hypnotic top note. A mystical heart of incense, smooth blonde leather and oud leads into an intense base of myrrh and woods in this opulent aroma, which creates a second-skin sensation to stimulate the senses. Wild Incense is rich and complex and captures the effortless power of the panther. Top notes of date accord and incense have an alchemistic effect. A bodily heart of rose, dark leather accord and smoky guaiac oil lead into an Oriental base of tonka bean absolute, vetiver and benzoin. Intense and addictive, this bouquet’s composition evokes an enchanting and mysterious world. Both fragrances were created by perfumer Benoist Lapouza and each is presented in a golden bottle with an animal-print label, reflecting the luxurious and captivating nature of the scents. As part of the Gold Collection family, the fragrances are presented in the rectangular bottle with a gold monogram cap that unites all eight perfumes.

You can even spot some trees in home gardens here in the Middle East. Ripe papaya is rich in nutrients like vitamins A and C, magnesium, potassium, and copper, which helps develop healthy and shiny hair. The fruit can also boost hair growth. It contains folic acid, which can improve blood circulation to the scalp and hair follicles. This, in turn, ensures better transportation of oxygen and other nutrients to the area. Studies have shown that a papaya hair mask can nourish and rejuvenate the hair follicles and stimulate them to grow new hair. To increase papaya’s efficiency, two other natural ingredients can be added to make a potent hair mask: coconut milk and honey. Coconut milk contains vitamin E, which helps strengthen hair roots and soften dry hair. While honey works as a hair softener for weak hair, its antioxidants also help improve the scalp and stimulate hair growth.

OHLALA’s Papaya Hair Mask What you’ll need:

½ cup ripe papaya ¼ cup coconut milk 1 tsp honey

How to make and apply it:

1. Put the ripe papaya, coconut milk and honey in a blender. Blend these ingredients well and make a smooth paste. 2. Wash your hair with shampoo and remove excess water, leaving it damp. 3. Apply the mask all over your hair, even the roots. Put a shower cap on to trap the warmth released from your head. The heat helps open the cuticles, allowing the nutrients to absorb into the hair more efficiently. Leave the mask on for 30 minutes. 4. Rinse your hair well with water only. It is not necessary to apply a hair conditioner afterwards. Style your hair as you wish. 5. You can use this papaya hair mask once or twice a week. PS: The mask should be used fresh rather than stored in the fridge.

A SOUL CLEANSING RITUAL In the centre of Doha is the sophisticated and vivacious La Cigale Hotel Managed by Accor that is home to a haven for Moroccan rituals – the Ozone Spa. OHLALA’s Emille Artigas was invited to check out one of its most popular treatments.

T

he Ozone Spa at La Cigale Hotel demonstrates that the Moroccan Hamman is not simply an ancient art of bathing but a haven for deep cleansing and rejuvenation in a most luxurious and opulent oasis. When the beauty and complexity of everyday life become overwhelming, your mind and body may long for recalibration. An ancient ritual that is as integral to Moroccan life as tagine and mint tea is Hammam. It offers respite that lets you get a deeper understanding of yourself. It is a beloved practice that continues to thrive in modern Morocco and affords one an opportunity to rejuvenate whilst getting really and truly clean. A swift walk through the lobby of La Cigale took me through to mezzanine level two, where the immensely impressive looking Ozone Spa is located. I was amiably welcomed in the gracefully designed and tranquil reception by spa manager, Berinda. Whilst soothing music played, and calming scent filled the room, I listened to her and her team describe the treatments that would await me. I was truly convinced from that moment the next two-and-a-half hours were going to be a heavenly experience. After a brief and reassuring medical check, I was introduced to my therapist, Chawanrak, a lovely and amazing lady who had me under her spell from the moment we strode along the restfully lit corridor to the locker room where, from this point, I left my realities behind and entered the Hammam treatment suite – an enormous and majestic chamber that immediately made me feel like royalty. The Hammam’s beautiful bathing ritual involves several steps that comprise soaping, scrubbing and exfoliation, then masking and cleansing with black soap and rose water, concluding with a comforting tea session. My treatment was the most in-demand, 90-minute Luxurious Ozone Spa Signature Body Hammam. It started with some moments of relaxing steam which created a temperature so perfect that I fell into a trance. Chawanrak then prepared our next series of procedures using Charme d’Orient, Paris, the world-renowned brand of Hammam products, starting with a moisturising soap that was gently applied and lathered on my whole body as well as my hair.

After the most calming rinse with a warm water drizzle, contentedly I laid down on the grandiose marble Hammam table where the revitalising scrubbing ritual was done. I immediately felt renewed vigour, strength and splendour as the skin on my entire body, face and soles of my feet was purified. I was enchanted and I lost all my inhibitions. The release of all my skin’s impurities from my body and face was the result of calming and professional exfoliation. My cleansing and relaxing journey continued, and a mask was applied thoroughly after another calming rinse. It stayed on for the most comforting yet uplifting 15 minutes with steam, then the intense final rinsing with cold water thoroughly mollified my skin and muscles from head to toe, which was an impeccable end to my bathing ritual experience. As I was being led to the massage suite, I felt totally attached to the Hammam suite, so accustomed had I become to its beautiful experience, and it seemed like I’d had a week’s holiday there. I put on my robe and reached the treatment suite, a room bedecked with golden ornaments and marble floors and walls. Chawanrak used the energy oil from Body & Mind Natural Oils for my Whole Body Healing Massage treatment, she started with my neck, focusing on my shoulders then my back. I recently confirmed to myself that perfect pressure is not only about pressure applied, but its precision. At this point, I was entirely under a spell and was trying not to doze until towards the end; when my shoulder and the head massage began, I totally gave in.

SPA Spotlight I slowly went back to the locker room to collect my realities but with a physical glow to my skin and feeling utterly inspired from within, a feeling that emanated through the whole of my being. It is not simply a substance of beauty, but it is of total wellness – it’s about feeling good, in harmony with yourself and at one with your own environment. It’s the sensation of treating yourself to your own time of pampering and discovering the pleasure of sharing pure and genuine moments of affection. I know I will plan to return over and over, and I know exactly what I need. The Hamman treatment, followed by the healing massage at the Ozone Spa, helped me discover the beauty that lies beneath.

OHLALA Insights

The bridal season is on! From November to May is when most couples decide to take their vows in this part of the world. Amongst all the preparations for the big day, picking your floral decoration is one of them, and OHLALA gives you a little push in the right direction.

wedding without flowers or any plant arrangement looks like something essential is missing. The good vibe that natural plants bring is what makes the ceremony even more magical. They can usually be found everywhere, from bouquets and boutonnieres to table centrepieces. Just as the bride’s dress, the floral design and the type of flower picked says a lot about the couple and the style of the wedding. OHLALA spoke to Ires Salmon, an event planner and florist, to learn more about plant and flower decoration. She tells us that there are many ways to become a wedding florist. In her case, she took a professional floristry course at the Texas Community College in Houston: “This was a great start; the certificate gave me the confidence to

70

www.ohlalamag.net

move forward in my work,” she explains. She then studied floral design at the Boerma Institute, an international floral design school in the Netherlands, and took a course with the Edith Blacklock Flower School. This shows that liking flowers is a good start but looking for specific education is the best way to succeed. In the process of choosing wedding flowers and greenery, Ires says it is fundamental to understand the couple’s preferences. There are various themes they tend to choose, such as classic, romantic, garden, beach, Bohemian, tropical and winter. “I often show customers a variety of flower motifs and arrangements to give them ideas, but the important thing is to constantly listen and note down what the couple would like to see on their special day,” she adds.

Another important detail is which flowers will be available during the period the wedding is happening. Many flowers are only in season for a few months, while others can be provided all year round, cutting down the overall cost and staying within your budget. And it’s not just about the price, picking flowers available throughout the year is a way of not being disappointed if the blooms don’t look as pretty or a sudden shortage happens right when you decide to get married. “I would definitely recommend flowers that are available throughout the year,” emphasises Ires. Some all-year-round flowers are orchids, freesia, roses, calla lilies, delphinium, lisianthus and alstroemeria. For greenery, silver dollar eucalyptus, Italian ruscus, seeded eucalyptus, salal lemon leaf, and fern are some of the best options. However, for spring and summer weddings, Ires would suggest peonies, spray roses, tulips, sweet peas, ranunculus, waxflowers, solidago, hydrangeas, and astilbe. For autumn and winter, she would choose hypericum berries, anemones, roses, camellias, carnations, amaryllis, thistle, magnolia leaves and blue spruce. There are many aspects in terms of flower compositions, but the most important one is to be aligned with the couple’s vision. It could be a preference for flowers with strong fragrances such as Jasmin, sweet peas, lavender, gardenias, and freesias. Alternatively, they may choose a complementary layout to the colour palette selected for the wedding. “For the arrangements, I use hues that blend with other aspects of the wedding such as tablecloths, napkins, invitation cards, and name tags,” says Ires. Another feature to keep in mind is the flowers’ height and structure; they could be tall, short, round, rectangular or just loose flowers in a vase; all those factors are imperative for a harmonious and perfect result. Flowers can amplify the beauty of any room if they are wellchosen; they bring positive emotions to people. It’s remarkable how a room with beautiful arrangements can bring a smile to everyone’s face. The positive effect of flowers on people has inspired Ires over the years: “My inspiration and passion for wedding flowers come from the happy faces,” she says. Ires also mentions that she learned a lot by working with people from 20 different countries. They have helped her improve her skills and understanding that different cultures bring significant variations in the taste and presentation of flowers. The last tip for brides-to-be is to choose a florist that makes you feel comfortable. An expert professional should guide you to make the best choices following your vision. It is also crucial to decide on your flower budget, bring in the florist early in the planning process, and schedule a site visit to ensure the floral concept is aligned with all other aspects of your wedding. Also, you should see your flower sample together with your tablescape (the table setting) at least two months before the wedding. No one wants last-minute surprises!

TRAVEL Escapes

Boston, in the USA, is well-known for its research universities, the basketball team, the Boston Celtics, and delicious food. It is also the location of renovated hotel, The Newbury Boston, which will make your stay in the heart of the city a remarkable one. Heritage For more than 90 years, since its launch in 1927 as one of the first Ritz-Carlton hotels in the USA, The Newbury has always been more than just a luxury hotel and a beloved landmark in the city. Rather it has given visitors a place to call home, and somewhere to make unforgettable memories. 76

www.ohlalamag.net

The Newbury, located in the premier shopping and dining neighbourhood of Back Bay, has served as a cherished and iconic destination, welcoming Boston residents, world leaders, dignitaries and celebrities alike. It’s no wonder that many guests return over and over to experience its timeless charm.

New Layout Leveraging the talent of three world-renowned designers, the building has been thoughtfully transformed to offer 286 guestrooms and suites with 16,000sq/ft of spectacular event spaces, signature dining experiences and a reimagined entrance. The extensive restoration and revitalisation of the hotel pays homage to its rich history, while also incorporating modern luxury and carefully curated guest experiences. The main entrance was relocated from Arlington Street to Newbury Street and visitors are welcomed into an elegant, landscaped terrace plaza, which pays a visual nod to The Public Garden that lies adjacent. Dramatic window awnings and a new lighting design enhance the hotel’s neoclassical façade. In creating the new entrance and public spaces, internationally recognised architect Jeffrey Beers sought to invoke the spirit of the building’s heritage by incorporating many historic details, including the original cobalt blue chandeliers from the main dining room. Sophisticated Living Historical architecture and residential comfort define each guestroom and suite at The Newbury Boston. Envisioned by acclaimed interiors firm Champalimaud Design to be residential in feel, each room employs a calming colour palette of blues, greys, and creams alongside tactile materials and custom furnishings. Handcrafted wood, herringbone accents, and marble touches further add a sense of lavish craftsmanship.

Mimicking a home or a residence, the expansive foyer, bathroom and closet are spatially organised to feel like one generous dressing area – with off-white limestone and wood finishes incorporated in both the closet and vanities that create a bright, yet tranquil environment. Many rooms feature views of The Public Garden. Each room is appointed with original artwork by illustrator Veronica Lawlor, alongside bespoke amenities, including Byredo ‘Willow’ bath products, made expressly for the hotel, Frette robes and linens, and inroom Nespresso Vertuo espresso machines. Guests looking to upgrade their experience may choose to book one of the hotel’s 90 luxury suites, or one of two dramatic and extraordinary Presidential Suites. Artistic Vibe The Newbury Boston art collection draws upon the legendary salons of Europe, where avant-garde artists, writers, poets, musicians and fashion designers were invited by an inspiring host/hostess to come together for camaraderie and conversation. These salons became an artistic, literary and philosophical refuge for what was considered ‘revolutionary’ thinking and dialogue amongst the literati giving rise to history-making moments that helped define modern society. The Newbury’s collection reaches back into the rich history of the city and the property, considering both as a source and stage for a range of works that illustrates the story of the property with elegance, style, rich visual flavour, and a touch of wit. There are paintings, photographs, sculptures and prints on view by diverse emerging and mid-career artists. www.ohlalamag.net

77

Signature Areas The Newbury’s impressive dining offerings include the dramatic new rooftop restaurant, Contessa, a 4,000sq/ft, glass enclosed rooftop restaurant that combines exquisite custom interiors with sweeping views of Boston as its backdrop. Serving iconic Italian dishes and a superlative range of mocktails and enhanced beverages, the Contessa experience evokes a grand European restaurant of a bygone era. A revived, cherished, local destination, The Street Bar, makes a welcome return offering classic New England fare and transporting clientele back to the 1920s with its speakeasy ambience, classic leather barstools, and cosy fireplace. There is also an exclusive guest lounge, The Library, which is perfect for settling in with a good read or relaxing fireside with a drink. Impeccably curated guest experiences extend to Afternoon Tea in The Newbury Salon, on-demand 24-hour in-room personal dining and special events and meetings. Fit On The Go The fitness centre at The Newbury provides a bright and beautifully conceptualised space for guests to stay fit and healthy. Designed by The Wright Fit and its founder, celebrity trainer Jay Wright, guests have access to a variety of state ofthe-art equipment, including Peloton bikes, Life Fitness and Freemotion equipment and TRX suspension trainers, as well as kettle bells and free weights. The fitness centre also provides the perfect space for stretching or yoga, while overlooking Commonwealth Avenue. For more information or to make a reservation, please visit www.thenewburyboston.com

OHLALA’s Homara Choudhary discovered the reason behind Nobu Doha’s cult following.

P

erched elegantly above the Arabian Gulf, the world’s largest Nobu at the Four Seasons Hotel Doha stands out for all the right reasons. The globally-renowned Japanese restaurant, owned by Chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa, was built by his favourite architect, the internationally acclaimed David Rockwell. You can see why the celebrity chef selected him for his most prestigious project. As well as being the biggest it’s the first freestanding Nobu restaurant and towers at 2,230sq/m on the northern end of the city’s corniche. Doha’s impressive skyline is laid out in all its splendour and the building’s unique design celebrates the city’s famous pearl-diving past. The iconic, threestorey structure has seven stylish entertaining spaces, including a rooftop terrace. It's not hard to see why one of Qatar’s finest dining establishments has a rapidly expanding cult following. The Nobu dining experience begins as soon as you walk through the fountain-framed entrance with the monumental timber staircase curving

invitingly to the upper floors. Adorning the dining space is an enormous, suspended installation, formed from hundreds of pieces of iridescent porcelain, designed specifically for Nobu by the Canadian artist Pascale Girardin to resemble fish scales. The field of spherical glass light fixtures that hang from the ceiling is breathtaking. Matching the muted warm, honeyed, amber tones of the rich interior with the music perfectly pitched. This is an ideal setting for a romantic dinner. You could be forgiven for believing you’ve walked onto a 007 James Bond film set. We were announced by our hostess, like Hollywood film stars, “irasshai mase!” the hostess called out, the rest of the staff replying. This means “welcome” in Japanese. The tables were carefully spaced out as the restaurant was operating at 75% capacity as per government guidelines. Clarissa looked after us, talking us through the extensive menu which boasted more than 200 dishes, highlighting some of Nobu’s signature Japanese-Peruvian fusion favourites for us to enjoy.

The first entree to arrive was the Tiradito. It’s a ceviche-style fish dish similar to sashimi. Thinly sliced, the flavours were citrusy without being too tangy. It was light and the coriander enhanced the flavour without being too overpowering. The oysters followed and were delicious, delicately laced with three different sauces: garlic, Maui onion and Ponzi. The standout appetiser surprised us both – the Avocado Tartare was an intricate blend of crushed avocado and wasabi, topped with crispy quinoa, setting off a complex burst of flavours and textures simultaneously. The last of the cold classics was the lobster salad, fused with grapeseed oil and cayenne pepper, it was succulent, with tender baby spinach shoots, all dressed with a subtly tangy garlic puree and lemon dressing. Half way through our meal, the Chef de Cuisine, Andrew Bozoki, personally came to see if we were enjoying our gourmet experience. It only took one look at our faces to tell him we were in food heaven. Bozoki has been with Nobu for 12 years and takes pride in his team of 24 chefs who share a ‘big melting pot of nationalities’. When asked what we should try next he recommended the world-famous Black Cod Miso. He was right, it’s Nobu’s pièce de résistance for a reason. Imported from Alaska it’s marinated for two days in den miso sauce and cooked in a Salamander after being glazed with Yuzo miso. It was so tender it melted in my mouth almost instantly.

82

www.ohlalamag.net

The other standout dish was the Rock Shrimp Tempura. It came on a bed of salad leaves and was drizzled with a creamy spicy sauce. Warm and insanely delicious, our taste buds were sent into orbit. And that’s exactly what General Manager Gaurav Khanna wants all his guests to experience. He described the dishes as an ‘umami’ which means the ‘essence of deliciousness’ in Japanese, also known as the fifth taste bud. Gaurav, who has been with Nobu for 13 years, said experiencing Nobu was like going on a ‘journey of flavours’ and he was absolutely right. The menu was a roller coaster for the palate. Dessert was a delightful trio of the Chocolate Bento Box, Mochi Ice Cream and the classic Nobu Cheesecake with raspberry sorbet. They were all surprisingly light. The Mochi Japanese ice cream was wrapped in soft rice pastry dough and came in three flavours. The Chocolate Bento Box was my favourite; the hot lava cake with the vanilla ice cream was the perfect combination and the right size in a unique box. It’s no surprise that Nobu has 45 locations around the world with Doha setting the pace. The waterfront venue, the exquisite food with its globally renowned signature dishes and the seven-star dining experience were mesmerising. An ideal choice for the perfect private dinner or that special evening out.

T

he BMW Group is the world’s leading premium manufacturer of motorcars and motorcycles. This esteemed company has been producing top-quality vehicles for well over a century now and shows no signs of slowing down. This month, OHLALA magazine was given the opportunity to test drive the latest BMW 8 Series Grand Coupé 840i, compliments of the outstanding team at Alfardan Automobiles – BMW Group Importer. Having test driven a variety of BMW vehicles in the past, we had high expectations for this new coupé, expectations that were ultimately exceeded. First up, the exterior. This vehicle has been built from top-of-the-line materials to ensure superior functionality and performance. The doors, the bonnet, the front shear panel, engine subframe, front bulkhead, rear bumper and outer skin of the roof are all constructed from aluminium, ensuring the strongest and lightest design possible. BMW have also combined expansive

surfaces with precisely drawn lines for their new coupé, resulting in a unique balance between dynamism and elegance. The four-door coupé concept has been evolved to highlight the progressive nature of the vehicle. The wide, low set front end radiates the car’s sporting intent, complemented by the adaptive LED headlights that are fitted as standard. The windscreen frame sits in a more upright position, giving the vehicle a higher roofline than its predecessors, whilst the rear window follows a slightly steeper line, allowing for a larger boot. At the sides, character lines accentuate the sweeping elegance of the vehicle’s design, flowing effortlessly from front to rear. Powerfully flared wheel arches house 18-inch, light alloy wheels and, along with the wide track, emphasise the robust form of the backend. The twin exhaust tailpipes, positioned on either side of the rear apron’s lower section, along with the slim All-LED rear lights finish off the exterior design in style.

DIVA Drives As we entered the Grand Coupé, we were greeted by the remarkably comfortable, electrically operated, multifunctional sports seats. These seats, along with ambient lighting, are fitted as standard in this new 8 Series. Thanks to certain design elements of this vehicle, including the raised roof and extended wheelbase, ample head, shoulder and leg room are on offer. The optional panoramic sunroof with its 1.5sq/m surface area, ensures the vehicle is always well-lit and adds to the sense of space on offer. A four-zone automatic climate control system along with electric blinds for the rear side windows are exclusively available for this four-door variant. The generous luggage area has a capacity of 440-litres, big enough to fit three large golf bags. This capacity can be greatly increased with the rear seating folded flat. We found the BMW Operating System 7.0 along with BMW Intelligent Personal Assist to be quite remarkable. This highly functional and userfriendly configuration comprises a navigation and multimedia system as well as a fully digital, high-resolution instrument cluster behind the steering wheel. Add a 12.3-inch (diagonal) screen along with a 10.25-inch (across) control display into the mix and you have one impressive setup. This system’s modern, digital functions have been precisely crafted to the needs of the driver. Intuitive operations wise, the driver can choose from the Control Display’s touchscreen functionality, the iDrive Controller, the steering wheel buttons, voice control and gesture control, all of which function perfectly. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assist can be activated with the spoken prompt “Hey BMW” and assists the driver in using vehicle functions. This superb system continues to learn and improve thanks to updates transmitted by Remote Software Upgrade.

Performance wise, the new 8 Series Grand Coupé 840i has been designed for superior on-road performance. Housing a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder, twinturbocharged petrol engine that produces 340hp and 500Nm of torque, this model can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in around 5.0 seconds and offers an electronically capped top speed of 250km/h. This engine alone is impressive enough, but when combined with an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission along with outstanding suspension and breaking capabilities, you have something rather special. We found this vehicle to be exceptionally responsive in all areas of performance and we always felt in complete control of the driving experience. Additionally, a wide range of state-of-the-art driver assistance systems and safety features have been included in the new 8 Series Gran Coupé. These include a Head-Up Display, Driving Assistant, Collision and Pedestrian Warning with City Braking function, Lane Departure and Lane Changing Warning, Rear Collision Warning, multiple airbags and a whole lot more. With so many fantastic features, we highly recommend anyone in the market for a premium four-door coupé gives this exceptional vehicle a try.

MISS Ohlala

ALL THE SINGLE LADIES OUR ISSUE THIS MONTH IS DEDICATED TO THE WEDDING THEME, AND MISS OHLALA REFLECTS ON THE OPPOSITE OF MARRIAGE – SINGLE LIFE! Many young girls dream of getting married in a big puffy white dress when they become grown women – but some of us just don't. Some don't even dream of getting married. And that's absolutely fine. There is nothing wrong with pursuing your own interests and focusing on yourself. If meeting your soul mate along the way happens, great! And if not, you can still find fulfilment and happiness with yourself and all the loving people around you. The truth is that women can be happy with themselves. A study done by the market research firm Mintel found out that 61% of single women say they are satisfied with their relationship status, compared to 49% of single men. And a further 75% of single women are not even actively looking for a partner, compared to 65% of single men. This means that women are single and loving it. Prince Charming can wait or not even show up. However, if you are not too happy being single, here are ideas to improve your relationship with yourself: - Spend time with yourself. Being single allows you to work on your relationship with yourself. - Make your own choices and hold yourself accountable for those choices. - Cultivate and prioritise nonromantic relationships, such as deepening solid friendships. - Go after your hobbies and embrace them. - Every relationship comes with a certain amount of compromise, but when you're single, you get to call the shots. - Make plans with other single friends.

OSCAR DE LA RENTA

Enjoy the journey that life is; your marital status is a tiny detail.
