The limited-edition collection 'Love and Romance' is a bespoke capsule line offering a selection of Tyler's timeless silhouettes adorned with Hamda's intricately embellished textiles. The fabrics used are embroidered at Hamda's atelier and sent to Tyler's factory in Italy. Known for its yellow/orange colour, strong aroma and bold flavour, this root has some incredible medicinal properties and has been used as a natural skincare ingredient since ancient times. The beauty benefits of turmeric for your skin are anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce skin irritation and anti-bacterial characteristics, which act as a great ally to fight acne. The golden powder is also rich in antioxidants, preventing hyperpigmentation and scars while fighting free radicals and slowing down cell damage. And, as if it didn’t have enough qualities, it is also said to treat fine lines and wrinkles. To take full advantage of turmeric’s attributes, some other ingredients can be added to create the perfect homemade facial mask. Whether you are looking for an improved complexion or want to treat specific needs, this rich powder will become your go-to ingredient on your spa days at home.

OHLALA’s Turmeric Facial Mask What you’ll need:

1 tsp turmeric powder 1 tsp apple cider vinegar 1 ½ tbsp honey 1 tsp milk or yoghurt

How to make and apply it:

1. Mix the turmeric powder, apple cider vinegar, honey and milk or yoghurt in a small bowl. The idea is to create a paste-like consistency that will stick on your face without dripping. 2. Wash and dry your face to remove any impurities. Also, opt for an old T-shirt while undergoing your turmeric treatment, so you don’t get any of your favourite clothes stained. 3. Apply the mask using your fingers or a make-up brush, avoiding eye contact. 4. Allow the mask to sit on your face for 15 minutes. Rinse off the paste with warm water, and don’t get scared if your skin looks a bit yellow afterwards. If you are too pale, the turmeric might dye your complexion, but it will go away in a few hours or try to use cleansing oil to remove the yellowish tint. PS: Dairy-based products such as milk and yoghurt help avoid turmeric leaving its colour on your complexion, so make sure it is added to your mask. However, if the treatment still stains, make a quick sugar and water scrub and apply it to your skin.

BEAUTY Spotlight woman’s hair is the primary and most noticeable fragment of her beauty. It’s a vital element of her appearance and sets the tone of her whole look. It is often the first impression and also what other people remember you by. As for me, it could set my mood, and a bad hair day is simply a bad day – to ensure my day is good, my daily long hair look is a ponytail or hair bun, and I will also use a bracelet as a hair tie. Our hands and feet are overworked every day, and they are also the first things that others notice about us. Whilst a manicure and pedicure are applied directly to the nails, the entire hands and feet not only get beautified, but get the healthy benefits as well. Having felt the need and importance, I have learned, managed and enjoyed doing my nails myself since last year. My hair has been exposed to the sun and hot weather from frequently going to the beach or beach holidays and water sports activities. It has become considerably lighter in colour, dry and certainly long. So, I was thrilled for days when I was booked to visit Jean Louis David for my hair and nail spa, a salon visit I have not had for over a year. BEAUTY Spotlight Jean Louis David is located along North Gate Mall, and I was pleasantly surprised how convenient and easy the parking space is – right in front of the salon. I was warmly welcomed by the most soothing aroma that fills the air, as the therapist led me along the bright yet warmly lit corridors towards my treatment section. Sada, my hairstylist, consulted with me to discover precisely what I needed. For my hair, she blended the most accurate mix with products that come directly from Paris using Majirel L’Oreal. The colour concoction was industriously and gently applied and left on my hair to relax and soak for 35 minutes, before it was then rinsed thoroughly. The much-needed trimming was done, my locks were meticulously styled and voilá, the hairstyle I have always wanted, combined with renewed glow and shine. Meanwhile, my nails were treated to the salon’s own brand called ‘nails’ simultaneously with Plexigel and a nail spa. Plexigel is a versatile and convenient brush-in-a-bottle nail enhancement system that provides strength, length and shape; protects nails and lasts for more than three weeks. Once the scrupulous treatment was completed using the Shellac system, the nail polish was finished off with a crystalclear shine.

The brand features sandalwood, chamomile, jojoba seed oil and jojoba soft beads, flawlessly perfected with jasmine and gardenia fragrance that leaves the skin hydrated, moisturised and with lasting softness. I was completely in the moment with the treatment, so calming, within the serene and tranquil environment. entered through the lush green atrium located at the heart of The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa. This is truly a unique pathway towards the highly anticipated Heavenly Spa by Westin experience. Upon entering the spa, I was greeted by a friendly hostess who provided a refreshing bottle of water. A standard yet effective massage questionnaire had to be filled in. A good first sign. Next, I was fortunate, to encounter a therapist whose abilities, character and professionalism single-handedly added a star to my experience. This gem is named Ricky. A spa’s beauty is not only about its design. Spa beauty, in part, stems from the therapist’s character, knowledge and skills. Ricky has 16 years of experience. He was trained at the crème de la crème of spas in Abu Dhabi and subsequently gained further knowledge at the Heavenly Spa by Westin. In a knowledgeable and professional manner, he explained the chosen Heavenly Signature Massage to me. It is essentially a muchimproved Swedish massage. A heat pack was gently placed on my back prior to the treatment as moderate heat functions as a natural sedative and relaxes muscle tissues, a perfect start to a massage indeed. I frequently workout at the gym, and therefore have constant stiffness in my upper back and shoulder regions. My massage questionnaire informed Ricky about my request for extra attention to the knots in my shoulders. And he did indeed spend significant time, working effectively and skillfully to get rid of the knots. Many people will complain about soreness after a massage and blame the therapist for it. Please be advised that soreness is an indicator of an effective massage, especially when medium or stronger (deep tissue) pressure has been requested. This positive discomfort is called DelayedOnset Muscle Soreness. After the soreness, which can set in a few hours after the massage and lasts a day or two, comes the feeling of being loose and relaxed. If you do not like soreness or a bit of struggle during your massage, always opt for soft pressure. If you like strong intense deep tissue massages, Ricky, who is as strong as an ox, is your guy!

SPA Spotlight After my excellently executed Heavenly massage, it was time for a facial. In dusty and extremely hot places like Doha, facial treatments are a godsend. The hot summer sun dries the skin and dust fills sinuses and pores. I opted for the Rose Crystal Lymphatic Facial. I encouraged Ricky to guide me through the process of the treatment. His step-by-step explanation and use of terminology all indicated that his 16 years of experience were at work. The Crystal Lymphatic Facial follows the steps of standard cleansing, exfoliation, toning and application of a mask. Heavenly Spa by Westin exclusively uses high-quality products from Organic Pharmacy. Contrary to a regular facial, the procedure is complemented by stroking of crystals on the skin. Lymphatic drainage is the result or, in layman's terms, flushing of stagnant water. It subsequently promotes detoxification and clearing of sinuses too. Other benefits include improvement of blood flow and circulation as well as brightening of the skin.

The Rose Crystal Lymphatic Facial at Heavenly Spa by Westin is truly a valueadded facial treatment with scientifically proven effects. The use of crystals, such as quartz and amethyst, can be traced back to ancient Egypt and China. Cleopatra is said to have treated her face with crystals from the Nile River; she would sing the praises of Heavenly Spa’s treatments. Cleopatra is not with us to comment on the matter anymore. However, the biggest compliment came from my better half, who said that I looked fresh and young! I discovered, in my post-review research, that Ricky is not the only exceptional therapist at the Heavenly Spa by Westin. One finds accolade after accolade on the internet, positively referring to the characters and skills of the therapists. So, this is not a review full of poetic laurels about design decadence or opulent flattery. None of that! This time the sincere recommendation to visit the Heavenly Spa by Westin at The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa stems from my encounter with a valuable human gem!

he digital world has been growing at a fast pace and, with the pandemic, it has received a big push. During the days of strict lockdown online shopping was mandatory if you wanted any new goods in your home beyond essential food and medical supplies. So even the most non-tech person had to learn to navigate in the virtual universe. A study by the U.S. Census Bureau showed that Americans spent US$791.7 billion during 2020 on e-commerce, a 32.4% growth when compared to 2019. This behaviour means that e-commerce accounted for 14% of total retail sales, compared to 11% in 2019. Most of the purchases were in the fields of groceries, home improvement products and items to help relieve boredom during lockdowns, such as sporting goods and musical instruments. Together with articles to keep people distracted while staying at home, many virtual services were also required. Learning a new language was one of them. According to data compiled by the free language app Duolingo, 30 million people attempted to learn a new language in the weeks after the world was forced into lockdown. With all the new instruments that were bought, the need for virtual teachers increased. According to Yamaha, 75% of Britons turned to music as a hobby during this period. Music teachers from all over the globe took the opportunity to offer their expertise in video classes and online teaching.

The website digitalintheround.com predicts that in 2021 there will be anywhere between 12 to 24 million online shops. It is difficult to keep up with numbers, many companies are going out of business, and new shops are popping up out of necessity and change. In the fashion world, online shopping has been part of people’s lives for a long time. Designers have their collections available in the multi-brands marketplace, such as Tryano, Netaporter, Theoutnet and many more. About 10 years ago, subscriptions boxes such as Stich Fix and Franck and Oak appeared in the market and, with them, services such as virtual personal styling. A form with private information from measurements to taste has to be filled and a selection of clothing and accessories is sent to you. Some of them even offer virtual styling consultations. The idea of having someone helping you sort your wardrobe out is an exciting one, and there are personal stylists out there that have turned their services full-on virtual with a comprehensive step-by-step system.

Perfect Fit Technological tools have been key in the transformation of the fashion scenario. Companies like Zozo, MTailor and MySizeID have an even more audacious approach when it comes to the personalisation of your closet. The Japanese fashion retailer Zozo invested in a body-measuring suit and app. The measurements are taken from a tracking-dot covered body stocking. The improved version from the first model, the Zozosuit 2, can generate precise 3D body models with a simple and intuitive scanning process using your phone and is available for business partnerships. The American company MTailor does not use a bodysuit, but its app system calculates the measurements through your phone camera and sells you fitted T-shirts, shirts, jeans, and suits. The promise is a perfect fitting, no matter your body shape. Another app that uses a patented algorithm to take measurements is MySizeID, it uses technology already available in mobile phones without accessing the camera. “There are no pictures taken. It is completely private,” said MySizeID CEO Ronen Luzon. The app offers a solution for online shoppers and retailers alike. MySizeID lets consumers create an online profile of their measurements, which can then be used with partnered online retailers to ensure that the consumers get the right fit, no matter the manufacturer or size chart. With this technology, no one will be small, medium or large anymore, and clothes will have the main purpose of representing someone’s style — a big step forward in the fashion world.

Customised Beauty In the beauty scenario, the in-person factor is fundamental. You can watch tutorials online on how to give yourself a haircut but having this service through virtual reality is still not possible. Hairklinikken, a hair clinic founded in Denmark at the beginning of the ‘90s, and now with locations all over the globe, has an innovative way of offering virtual hair consultations. It does sound tricky, but we spoke with Lars Skjøth, Hairklinikken Founder and Lead Researcher, who told us about how they have been exploring the digital field and offering their tailor-made services. “For over 10 years, Harklinikken has been servicing clients virtually to help individuals who are unable to visit one of our clinics. It has always been a goal of mine to make effective hair care solutions accessible. How did you come up with this concept? Ali Almohannadi - The platform's idea is about beauty and health, which we are focusing on for the future. Personal care was at the centre of attention during this pandemic. This period has been the most influential in our industry, with many shops shutting down, many laws passed that affected public income and employment, so much harm to businesses. During the upcoming months, we will try hard to continue moving towards a successful online process in which we serve all social groups, which will allow us to achieve more and more success. OHLALA - The element that unites the whole platform revolves around beauty. The pandemic affected the regular services at salons and spas. How can this market grow again? Ali - Every business involved with beauty, wellness and personal care has been hit during the lockdowns. But it's natural to go through crises like the one that has happened and, at the same time, these challenges give us the power to continue and work again. It helps us develop and collaborate with new partners to come back, take advantage of what's happened positively and shift our operations in a positive way. And that's where our struggle comes from, so during the upcoming time, we'll continue to work hard to achieve more relevance to the market, our subscribers and Doha's beauty community. OHLALA - How do you see Venita expanding even further? Ali - We plan to grow and expand during the upcoming period. We have updated Venita features, and we are taking it to the next level, as you have never seen before. We have taken advantage of the times when services have been closed and worked hard to make sure we are providing inclusive, user-friendly services to our consumers all in one place. We will work on marketing it extensively to spread awareness, provide the best

services to the Doha community and widen our services in different markets within the region. OHLALA - You have a degree in Analytical Chemistry & Forensic Science. Do you believe that your science background helps you have a clearer vision of your own businesses and your clients' strategies? Ali - My study period was in Britain. While living there, I learned a lot from the consumer behaviour perspective, how technology made my life easier, and how different apps were tailored for customer satisfaction and a user-friendly experience. I also have a diploma in business administration, which helped me a lot in my business. I don't get bored with studying. I'm currently learning more about digital marketing, and it got me building my business and expanding considerably, and I've got a lot of plans for the future. OHLALA - When you are not busy managing your brands or finding the best solutions for your clients and partners, how do you like to spend your free time? Ali - When I am not working or researching the latest technology trends, I spend time watching Netflix, catching up with TV series. I also have been a football fan; I am in for watching any game. I like to browse different social media platforms; I love content creation in all its different forms. I used to write and create content like storytelling on my IGTV. I haven't done that in a long time, but I am determined to go back again. OHLALA - If you could give one piece of advice, personal or professional, what would it be? Ali - My advice is that there is no such thing as an end to knowledge; you must continue to work on your learning experience; science is constantly developing. Change is the only constant, especially the one we are part of; it evolves day by day. You must keep pace with everything and learn everything that comes in front of you. Knowledge is power. Marketing management 20 years ago was not what it is now. What I want to say is never stop learning with every lesson, course or reference found through social media or any educational platform.

Wakan is a hidden gem nestled in the Western Hajer mountains in Oman. These florets symbolise change and new beginnings which are captured in Amal's signature embroidery of leaves and flowers. The collection boasts the flowy silhouettes of long dresses and separates that stay true to the brand's feminine aesthetic, and the designs come with touches of lace and velvet. The colours used are intense grey and black, signifying fortitude and power, fused with hints of turquoise, embodying emotional balance, and pale rose, expressing grace. OHLALA had the opportunity to talk to Amal about her brand and latest collection. OHLALA - Your creations have an Arabian touch. Are the Middle East and its traditions and culture your primary source of inspiration? Amal Al Raisi - My brand's identity is embedded in the idea of fusing tradition with modernity while honouring Arab roots. Every collection is inspired by an Omani element as I use my designs as a canvas to portray the heritage and craftsmanship of Oman to the rest of the world. OHLALA - What are the main fabrics used in your AW2021 collection, and which is your favourite? Amal - The collection is mainly comprised of soft crepe, lace, tulle and silks. The fabrics are highlighted using delicate embroidery techniques. I personally prefer the soft crepe as I feel it's a very light and comfortable fabric to wear. OHLALA - Your collections have traditional cuts; however, at the same time, the final pieces have a modern silhouette. How do you achieve that? Amal - I like to design for those on the lookout for feminine yet modern pieces to suit their style. With this in mind, I use traditional silhouettes as an inspiration and redesign them from a contemporary angle to suit today's women.

s the great heat of a Doha summer begins to ease, there are few more beautiful places to eat than La Mar by Gastón Acurio at InterContinental Doha. We pass down an avenue of olive trees and through tall latticed dark-wood doors. The double-height dining room is an oasis of neutral tones, natural stone and warm wood, but we are lured beyond it, stepping between twin fountains to our table on the terrace. Our view is the pale golden sand and lapping waves of Doha’s longest private beach, embraced by a curving promenade that runs out to a viewpoint with 360-degree views of the Arabian Gulf and city skyline. Peruvian cuisine is all about simple, fresh ingredients used to maximum effect: contrasts of colour and texture, sweetness, acidity and heat. This food is a love-affair, a criollo marriage of flavours from Spain to the Amazon, Asia to the Andes, and Gastón Acurio is its premier global ambassador, recruiting the finest young culinary talent to bring his passion to the world. It’s this strong and active connection to the motherland, under the leadership of Executive Chef Frank Ponce Yalico, that makes dining at La Mar such an entirely authentic and transporting experience. CHIC Eats And nothing could be more quintessentially Peruvian than the first plate to arrive, Cebiche Amazonico. It’s a genius dish, the key to which is absolute freshness. Chef de Cuisine Luis Huamani, creator of this week’s menu, reminisces about making Cebiche on the beach with fish caught himself off Peru's long, equally golden but rather wilder Pacific coast. “If you have fresh fish, you have everything,” he tells us. Instead of cooking, the freshest catch of the day is quick cured in lime juice, salt and ice, then bathed in Leche de Tigre. This ‘tiger’s milk’ is an elixir of fish stock, garlic, ginger, aji chillies and coriander. This version is gilded with the unexpected sweetness of mangoes and studded with roasted avocado and Choclo, a large creamy white corn, like giant pearls. The Cebiche is paired with another Peruvian icon, Causa, in which fresh, tender shrimps are layered with delicately whipped potato laced with yellow chillies, avocados and tomatoes (plus, of course, the three ingredients that Chef Luis says make everything better: ‘lime, salt and love’). That was just the warm-up. Next, in swoops a platter of Chabata bread loaded with succulent spit-roasted chicken, and charcoal-roasted fish Anticuchos, a fragrant kebab originating with the Incas. Each one, beautifully flaky, smoky from the coals, nestles on a little bed of buttery corn mash striped with the sweet heat of Rocoto red-chilli cream. This is classic Peruvian street food, meant to be eaten sizzling from the grill, burning your fingers but satisfying your cravings.

Then it’s time for the main event, two recipes entrusted to the chef by his grandmother and hers before her. On one side, a steaming dish of Aji de Gallina, the tenderest chicken cooked in yellow chillies, milk, peanuts and black olives, gently laid over mouthful-sized bites of perfectly crisp home-fried potatoes. Beside it, a vibrant tangle of Tallarines Verdes. Italian emigration to Peru dates back to the 1840s, so this cousin of spaghetti with basil pesto has been enriched over the generations with spinach, evaporated milk and Queso Fresco to a dreamy creaminess. It’s crowned with a Milanesa, a finely breaded cutlet of beef, crisp outside, tender within. This is comfort food honed to a fine art. We’re wondering whether we could possibly manage anything else, when Chef Luis appears one final time, bearing a surprise that typifies the fun, flair and sophistication of La Mar. Between us is placed a bowl of red-hot coals, with around it a stack of crumbly Alfajores shortbread cookies, a pot of the darkest melted chocolate, a cone of melt-in-your-mouth Manjar Blanco (Peru’s answer to Dulce de Leche caramel) and – the clue to it all – two plump marshmallows. Toasting our Peruvian smores, we are children again, gobbling sticky molten clouds of joy. Delighted and satisfied, we lean back and savour the view. The lights of the city shimmer out across the water. That stretch of pale gold sand fades to blue, then deepest midnight, reaching upwards to a starry sky.

DIVA Drives olkswagen is a brand that holds a worldwide reputation for producing outstanding motor vehicles. The VW Beatle, the VW Polo, the VW Golf and the VW Tiguan are all proud creations of this massively successful automobile manufacturer. This month, thanks to the amazing team at Volkswagen Qatar, OHLALA got the opportunity to test drive the new and improved VW Teramont, a vehicle that has recently received a stylish facelift. Available in seven different colours, the 2021 VW Teramont exudes an air of confidence with its large frame and classy finishes. With a length of over five metres, a width of almost two metres and a height of more than 1.7m, the VW Teramont is the largest SUV in the Volkswagen family. Although this updated model maintains the same foundation as the previous generation, there are many new features that elevate it above its predecessor. The newly designed grille sits smartly at the front end of the Teramont, housing the globally recognised VW badge. The front diffuser now sits slightly lower on the vehicle and sports a fashionable silver lip. The front bumper has also been redesigned and, along with new IQ.Light, full-LED headlamps and fog lights, gives the car a contemporary feel. The neat lines

of the flanks draw the eye effortlessly from front to rear, with the silver roof rails and striking design of the 20-inch alloy wheels adding to the modern look of the vehicle. At the back end, an updated rear bumper, with IQ.Light and full-LED taillamps, finishes off the Teramont in style. We were fortunate enough to test drive a model with the coveted Highline trim. Inside this version you will find a clean and functional environment that has a premium feel to it. The driver’s 10-way adjustable and front passenger’s eight-way adjustable, ventilated power seats, in leather, offer an abundance of both comfort and support. The next generation steering wheel, also in leather, is well designed and feels great in hand. The driver’s controls have been positioned for optimal ergonomics, providing the most efficient driving environment possible. An eight-inch Touch Adaptable Infotainment System along with a Volkswagen Digital Cockpit 10-inch display, both offer easy accessibility to the vehicle’s various functions and information. A three-zone Climatronic AC and a panoramic sunroof will ensure you and your family are always kept cool and comfy. Customers can opt for either Highline or the prestigious R-Line trim, which can be ordered accordingly.

The three rows of seating provide space for up to seven people to sit comfortably in this SUV, with both rows in the back allowing for customisable seating arrangements. An innovative folding mechanism for the second row offers easy entrance and exit room on both sides by enabling the second-row bench to tilt and slide forward, even with a child seat in place. Being a family-orientated car, the Teramont provides plenty of charging points, cup holders and storage space throughout the vehicle to keep everyone happy. The luggage compartment offers 583 litres of storage, a capacity that can be increased up to 2,741 litres when both rear rows of seating are folded flat. Performance wise, our Teramont boasts a 3.6-litre FSI, six-cylinder petrol engine that produces 3,597CC, 280hp and 360Nm of torque. The power of this well-constructed engine, along with the eight-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic, enables this SUV to accelerate from 0-100km/h in 8.1 seconds and offer a top speed of 190km/h. Not too shabby for a car weighing in at almost two tonnes. Add the 4Motion AllWheel Drive system combined with responsive braking to the equation, and you have one very capable vehicle. This setup provides the convenience of an automatic with the hands-on sportiness of a manual transmission.

Adding to the family-friendly factor of the new Teramont is the abundance of safety features fitted to safeguard you and your loved ones. An automatic post collision braking system, three-point seatbelts for all seats, sidecurtain head protection airbags covering all three rows, along with the car’s reinforced safety cage construction, provide a safe environment for all occupants. Electronic safety systems include an anti-lock braking system, electronic stability control, lane assist, park assist, blind spot monitor with rear traffic alert, adaptive cruise control and so much more. All-in-all, we found the new VW Teramont to be a good-looking, modern and versatile vehicle.

The study also shows that it takes less than 10 minutes for the average adult to look at a screen after waking up each day – with six in 10 taking a glance within five minutes. New experiences are one click away, but when do we know we’ve had enough screen time as adults? Health experts from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute in the U.S. say that we should limit screen time to less than two hours per day outside work. Too much screen time can

cause eye strain, headaches, insomnia, poor sleep, addictive behaviours, neck and back pain and changes in cognition.
