Sida and Gnaneswaran may have been entrepreneurs for only a short while, but already they have quite a load of projects and are expanding every day. While most of their short clips on their website feature couples from the Tamil community, they have started getting calls from other communities. “We just shot some weddings in the Bengali community and we’re slowly reaching out... we don’t really market ourselves...we haven’t gotten around to it,” said Sida. It is important to note that this small start-up has bloomed into a successful entertainment company mostly by word of mouth or through their presence on social media sites like Twitter and You Tube.

ver wanted to star in your own music video or feature film opposite your loved one?

Jayzen Sida and Thuru Gnaneswaran of Atrium Pictures in Markham can make it happen.

Sida and Gnaneswaran, who started the company three years ago in 2009, produce and direct wedding videos in exactly these creative and cinematic styles. Though they are self-taught artists, with Gnanesawaran managing mostly the business, they have done their bit in the film industry and still apply those standard practices to their own company, such as having a team of writers and cameramen on rotation at all times and fully sketching out a production schedule according to customers’ budgets before attempting any project.

Visually, their cuts are short and interesting compared to older wedding cinematography that has had the focused, documentary style for decades and their packages are enticing with clever names listing Hollywood visionaries. When asked to describe his personal style, Sida, the creative director, described himself as a disciple of both Stanley Kubrick and Mani Ratnam. Off course, packages vary according to choice and budget and the number of hours it will take in post production to edit the final product.

This type of wedding video is slowly becoming more and more popular and not just because of the visuals. “When the client comes in, we get him comfortable, get him to talk about himself so we can get an idea of who they are, how the couple met... we give more importance to their story,” said Sida.

It seems like more than a coincidence that the duo decided to name their company, Atrium, around a major functioning organ – the heart.

An Atrium Secret: We get the shots of immediate family members first and then have the groom and the bride to walk around the tables to greet the guests while the cinematographers follow along with them in order to focus on the planned vision while still getting the important shots.

5 Tips for Brides and Grooms Looking for Wedding Cinematographers 1.

Determine your budget, how much time you are willing to commit (some cinematographers require the client to do a lot of rough edits), and your vision for your video.

2.

Browse through various entertainment companies that are available on your date, fit your budget and narrow down to those who can capture your vision.

3.

Meet with a few cinematographers before making your hiring decision. It’s important to create a relationship with the cinematographer that is comfortable in order to express ideas and nitty witty details of the day.

4.

Meet again with the chosen cinematographer to finalize ideas and go over particular shots and details before the big day so everyone is aware of the game plan.

5.

When it finally comes to the day of the wedding, don’t be afraid to express concerns and changes as the day goes along. You can’t predict everything and everyone needs to work as a team to ensure the day is captured beautifully.

unning down the hallways of the same middle school while growing up in the same neighbourhood, Neerajah and Prasanth didn’t have a clue of what was to come. When the stars did align, the two were in high school equally involved in school social clubs and sports. Neerajah was a student council member and Prasanth was heavily engaged in different sports. In being involved in these clubs, they moved in the same circle of friends. Eventually, in grade eleven, Neerajah and Prasanth had an English class together that sparked the relationship in the making since middle school.

About nine years after dedicated and committed dating, two of which were long distance, Prasanth convinced Neerajah to dine with him at the Jack Astors he had initially taken her to for their first date.

It was there that he proposed to her in a private room with a single table, a bouquet of roses and wine.

Neerajah and Prasanth were married at Toronto’s Woodbine Banquet Hall. Close to 600 guests attended the Hindu ceremony.

While planning the wedding, Neerajah and Prasanth made the conscious decision to understand the rituals and intricacies of the Hindu ceremony. To maintain the attention of their guests throughout the long ceremony and to provide a clear visual of what was happening, seating was arranged in theatre

style. Only immediate family joined the beautiful couple on the mandap through important details of the wedding.

The bride walked down the aisle in a stunning, vibrant deep purple Kanchipuram saree and chose the traditional long braid wrapped with jasmine f lowers. The handsome groom awaited his bride at the mandap in a cream-coloured sherwani. Close friends and family accompanied the bride as she walked down the swoon-worthy walkway, lined with white floral pomander balls, to her future husband.

Prasanth tied the thali, the auspicious necklace, in front of the beautiful backdrop set up by Diya Décor. The couple embraced the Tamil Hindu culture and enjoyed

every step of the wedding and ensured everything ran on a prompt schedule.

When it came down to the reception, Prasanth and Neerajah wanted something intimate so that they could enjoy the company of their guests and take the time to interact with them.

With the recent purchase of a new home that was yet to be furnished, they immediately decided to make the house the venue for the reception. Except there was one slight problem: the backyard was not in the best shape. After a quick hunt for a

designer to prime their backyard for their wedding, they found a company that designs backyards. Little did they know that the design company was involved in the HGTV reality show Decked Out. Ecstatic and in disbelief, Prasanth and Neerajah accepted the offer to have their backyard completely redone by the Decked Out experts.

The couple dreamed up a homespun Toronto backyard bash and exactly 3 days before their reception, the crew presented the stunning new deck. The Wedding Deck was creatively crafted to entertain the friends and family with ample space for tables and chairs. On the day of the reception the décor was kept minimal and the focus was on great food and an entertaining deejay to start the dance floor and keep it going late into the night. There to capture the beautiful elements of the reception and the heartfelt moments of the family and friends in Prasanth’s and Neerajah’s home was Ramyaj Images.

Shereen’s family belonged to the Hindu religion and Harneet’s family were Sikhs. Bringing the two different cultures and religions would call for two separate ceremonies and that’s exactly how the planning process took lead. The couple was married on August 5, 2011 at Paradise Banquet Hall.

The first ceremony was small and intimate. Close to 150 guests joined them for the Hindu ceremony, which evoked the authentic charm and intricacy of South Indian Hindu traditions.

hereen and Harneet both worked in the same consulting firm in Toronto, and their first encounter was at a fundraiser that was organized by Shereen.

The two then went on to work on a project together. From that moment, their relationship took flight from becoming close friends to becoming a couple. Four years later, Shereen and Harneet’s parents officially met and with their blessing, the wedding planning process kickstarted.

Harneet proposed to Shereen at Fenelon Falls, a lake town in Ontario, after a warm and delightful afternoon of horseback riding and a tantalizing lunch.

The couple had completed their Masters degrees one month before their wedding and during this hectic time they turned to wedding planners Harmony Banquet Services. With their assistance and knowledge of South Asian weddings,

Most Memor able Momen t “At the time I was leaving the house for the ceremony, when my father broke the coconut in front of the house – I saw the loving emotions unveil on my father’s face,” - Shereen Programs highlighting all the steps and rituals of the Hindu ceremony were handed out to guests because both Shereen and Harneet wanted guests to understand the significance of the rituals.

The bride was carried down the aisle in a gold polki. Colours of the ceremony included gold, rich red, and cream. Perfect Settings captured the true essence of the South Indian Hindu wedding using plush and elaborate textiles as a backdrop. Lined down the pathway to the mandap were white Ganeshs wearing flower garlands.

Using rich and deep colours, elaborate textiles and ornate décor pieces gave off a Morrocan meets traditional and cultural style. In the grand foyer, guests were greeted by a Radha and Krishna statue.

To capture all the beautiful moments as they unfolded, the couple had hired Zaheer from ZMolu Photography.

Guests were invited the next day for the morning Sikh ceremony at the Gurdwara. The bride walked down the aisle in an eye-catching red lengha adorned with lots of intricate details.

Close to 350 guests were invited out to The Garden Banquet and Convention Centre later in the evening and were treated to the full effect wedding celebration, with fist-pumping high energy Punjabi beats and a dreamy head table surrounded by crystal cascading pillars The meticulous details of the reception ref lected the

beautiful colour palettes of the bride’s lengha. Tables were elaborately detailed with towering floral and crystal lamp style centerpieces.Cakes by Zehra designed a beautiful three tiered classy white wedding cake. The resulting celebration – complete with candle-lit tables –embodied a modern and elegant vibe.

hat began as an innocent introduction at a mutual friend’s birthday party ended up being a lifetime partnership. Tharshana and Athavan never imagined fate could bring them back together in the hallways of the University of Toronto in Scarborough.

Athavan, then a student of Waterloo University, would go to U of T Scarborough to study with his friends when he was home away from Waterloo. It was here Tharshana met him for the second time and the two became good friends. Before long they were an item.

A s the pla n n i ng process of the wedding began, Tharshana and Athavan knew for certain they wanted a destination wedding. Tharshana always dreamt about a beach wedding, but living in Toronto meant that options of a beach wedding were limited. Tharshana knew it was going to be a difficult task to convince her parents to agree to a destination wedding, especially coming from a large family, But after some convincing, both families agreed. The next difficult task at hand was getting an Ayire (priest) to travel abroad and marry the couple. Following numerous calls to various Ayires, the outcome was that no Ayire was

okay to fly out for a destination wedding.

That was before they found the priest that married Athavan’s mom and dad. This priest went on to explain that Athavan’s father and mother was the first wedding he officiated. He then agreed to marrying Athavan and Tharshana; it was the last wedding he officiated before retiring.

Tharshana and Athavan chose the glorious and beautiful Riviera Maya, Mexico as their Hindu wedding location. Tharshana worked with the resort planner and worked out all the details of the wedding through emails, multiple phone calls and faxes. The family had never vacationed together before so this destination wedding meant a whole lot more than just an official ceremony, it would be a memorable lifetime experience with close family members.

They tied the knot in a traditional Hindu ceremony on August 17, 2011 on the beach among their 30 closest friends and family.

Tharshana walked down the aisle in a traditional multi-coloured Kanchipuram adorned with beautiful stone details. Her neck and ears were beautifully adorned with jewelry that was elegant and simply stunning. Seated in the dreamy mandap adorned with white and rose garlands was Athavan in a striking white sherwani.

The dreamy backdrop to their beautiful wedding was the Riviera Maya white sandy beach.

Following the 2 hour ceremony was a mini cocktail party on the beach and the release of sky lanterns into the night by each of their guests bringing the magical evening to a beautiful end. The couple flew out G+H Photography who captured the jawdropping images of the beautiful ceremony.

Following the breathtaking beach Hindu ceremony and the family vacation, the couple held a grand reception back in Toronto at the Embassy Grand Convention Centre on August 20, 2011. Close to 500 guests joined the newlyweds for a night of da nci ng a nd celebration. K a r m a Design worked with the couple to create the glam and glitzy reception they desired.

Keeping it very modern and trendy, the colours included purple and pink with lots of crystals. Set in the center of each table was a crystal ball centerpiece with more hanging crystals. With a small family ceremony complete, the reception included all extended families and friends for a night of great fun and dancing.

he first time Tasha Jeyanathan was briefly introduced to Thileep Kandasamy, through mutual friends, was while attending different universities during their undergraduate careers. At that moment, little did she know that she was going to marry this young man. They had met only that once and gone their separate ways. Thileep completed medical school at Western University in London while Tasha remained in Toronto to attend the University of Toronto’s medical school.

Five years later, Thileep moved back to Toronto to complete his residency at Sunnybrook Hospital. Destiny stepped in and brought Tasha to Sunnybrook Hospital as well where the two finally took to each other.

On New Year’s Eve in 2010, Thileep captured Tasha’s heart in more than one way by planning a day of ice skating, hot chocolates, rejuvenating spas and fine dining. Following the memorable and beautiful time spent together relaxing and serenading in the warmth of that day, Thileep brought Tasha back home. He brought out a written journal compiled of all the conversations the two had shared over Facebook, and under the date December 31, 2010 were the written details of the proposal and, with that, the engagement ring.

With a clear idea of how they wanted their celebration to unfold, Tasha and Thileep tied the knot on September 9, 2011 at the Mississauga Convention Centre.

For the reception, with the two of them being doctors, it only made sense to get married somewhere where the venue was a reflection of science or medicine. They also wanted a venue that was different and unique – so they chose the Ontario Science Centre. Approximately 250 guests were invited to the Ontario Science Centre for a fun and relaxed night. The stunning bride wore a CTC West saree while the dashing groom walked in with a Harry Rosen three-piece suit. The night started with a cocktail-hour where guests were invited to play the interactive games at the educational institution. The night evoked elegance and class through the

Tasha wanted simplicity and elegance to shine through her wedding, so her mother brought back her manavara saree from India. It was a pure Kanchipuram saree and it radiated with rich vibrant pink. The bride also wore gold wedding jewelry -- her mother’s from her wedding day. The groom looked handsome in his tasteful white sherwani, rich with small details.

It was a night of celebration that included only speeches, a slide show and a whole lot of dancing.

It’s safe to say. We can all attest to experiencing ill-prepared hours long speeches. Heads drop in embarrassment and guests cringe in seats listening to the awkward speech that seems to get worse by the minute. Truthfully, bad speeches can ruin an event.

It appears that once the mic is in the hands of the speaker, he/she gets incredibly comfortable or nervous and the same adjectives are thrown out repeatedly. Adding alcohol to that mixture certainly doesn’t help. If there’s a microphone in sight and alcohol has been consumed, it’s hard to get people to cease giving their two cents.

Guests love the bride and groom, truly and dearly, and that’s why they attend their special day and share the joy and experience of the beautiful day with the two. But in all honesty, we don’t want to hear hours of stories after stories. Most of the room didn’t go to high school with the bride and groom or watch the bride and groom grow up.

Speeches can be witty and raunchy. They can make guests laugh, cry or yawn. Preparing a speech is nerve-wracking, so make clear notes and stick to it.

As you sit and prepare your speech, as a father, mother, bride, groom, best friend, or other, here are some basic speech tips, hints and pointers.

Don’t wing it. Have a direction and pick a style: humor or sentimental.

Keep it simple and actually take the time to prepare a speech. Failing to do so has many people providing information they’d never, ever want in the speech.

The speech should be warm, personal and brief.

Touch on special moments and keep it short The speech should be focused on the audience, not the speaker. Don’t get carried away with stories and forget that they may not be relevant or make sense to half the wedding guests.

Cut off at two minutes. Other people have different opinions but if the plan is to have 4-5 speeches, the speeches can’t be longer than 2 minutes.

Speak slow and clear and don’t rush through it.

Perhaps, focus on one story that truly describes your relationship with the bride and/or groom.

Your speech can include the romantic history of the couple, your wishes or your personal experience (if it’s good).

‘Koorai’

Unique to Tamil weddings, the bride’s wedding saree, the ‘Koorai’, has definitely evolved from the time of our grandmother’s marriage to what we’re seeing in saree stores now.

Looking back about 50 years, our grandmothers used to wear red or even mustard Kanchipuram silk sarees. Flash forward twenty years, our mother can remember walking down the aisle in different shades of red Banarsi sarees. These extraordinary saris are heavily embroidered with silk threading, and known for their gold and silver brocade.

Today’s Tamil or South Indian brides can be seen walking down in either sarees beautifully adorned with stones and kundan designs or simple thread woven Kanchipuram sarees. Koorai sarees in shades of pink, red, orange, purple and maroon can often be found on the beautiful stages of the mandap.

As you flip through Facebook, magazines and blogs in search of your dream wedding saree, keep in mind the five following tips:

Koorai sarees are required to be in colors that are vibrant and bright. It’s not a must that this sari you select has to be red. It can also be pink, purple, mustard, yellow, or orange. Select a color that complements your skin, in keeping that in mind - online shopping is certainly not the way to go.

Visit a saree store during the day and have the staff wrap the saree, and have a look outside in the daylight; this is where you can see the true color of the saree and how it looks against your skin.

If you want to appear a little taller, look for sarees with small patterns that are vertical.

Stay away from horizontal prints. If you want to appear a little shorter, find sarees with double side borders or thick borders.

Based on the daily style of your wardrobe, find out if you are a more glitz and glamour girl or if you’re into the classy and elegant style. This can inch you closer to distinguishing if it is stones or kundan you would like to see on your saree or no stone work at all. If you’re the latter, keep it strictly Kanchipuram with gold thread work.

Every Kanchipuram silk saree is amongst the most superior silks in the world. Thanks to its double warp and double weft. Besides, the gold in the motifs is incorporated by dipping the silk thread into liquid gold and silver. This enhances the beauty and the value of the silk.

If you’re planning on wearing lots of jewellery, stay away from the busybody saree, it takes away from the adornments.

Remember, you want to be wearing this saree again, maybe even at your son or daugther’s wedding, so spend a little and get something to your liking.

From Wedding Bliss to Marital Stress: How to Cope

with Post-Wedding In Laws

I

t’s official. You have finally taken that step.

Family and friends surround both of you, all smiles and showering you with many blessings.

You have tied the knot, literally, and now you’re embarking on a new chapter with your husband, trying to create your own fairy tale, your own happily ever after, your own adventure as life partners.

After allowing yourself to be saturated in the rosy bubble that surrounded the wedding and the honeymoon, you come back to the harsh reality. Hit with that realization that the bubble of happiness in which you hoped to only include you and your husband, needs to now and forever more be expanded to include the in-laws....what do you do?

It’s not uncommon for the bride to leave the comfort of her own independence and her own family to take that bold step into unknown grounds. She can do her best to try and formulate a co-operative and, (maybe naively) hope for a harmonious relationship with the parents of her better half. Possibility?

Maybe. But mostly the answer is no.

The saying, “distance makes the heart grow fonder” holds more truth in a couple’s relationship with their in-laws than any other relationship. Mamas of grooms, especially South Asian mothers, still retain that little boy image of their sons, an image that postulates them to still nurture, care for and feed their grown male offspring, without the rationality or belief that he is probably capable of doing those things himself after all these years. Especially in a culture where boys hold more value than girls, there is a sense of pride within the mother as well as a greater expectation put forth on the wife to take on the role of the nurturer. As soon as the bride comes in, there is an unconscious power struggle, comparisons made, actions criticized and frustrations mount.

So where does the heart grow fonder?

To be able to maintain a positive and harmonious relationship with the in-laws, there has to be a distance. Couples need to take a few steps away from the parents to be able to build a strong foundation of marriage for their future. The couple as well as the in-laws have to have a clear grasp on the understanding that the marriage was tied

between one man and one woman, not the family.

Boundaries have to be set by the couple to figure out in what capacity the in-laws would take part and influence their marriage.

Easier said than done I’m sure.

In any relationship, whether it is with partner or parents, clear communication is imperative in maintaining a congenial bond. To be able to set those boundaries, you need to know who you are and be open and honest with your spouse as to what you can and cannot accept. However having said that, as much as it is important for a woman to be able to assert her place as the wife within the family, there also has to be a level of flexibility and maturity within both spouses to take into account the views and the desires of the other person as well as the inlaws. Being able to do this effectively, without any confusion or drama, can help build a supportive, interdependent relationship.

Once that can be done, maybe the rosy bubble of marital bliss that you only thought included you and your spouse, can cheerfully expand to include the family, without contrite or fear of getting a possible migraine.

One can dream.
