Welcome to Malta! December has arrived, and while the island hasn’t seen much rain, the temperature has definitely dropped— though for the Maltese, anything below 18°C qualifies as “coat weather”! It’s a season where the Christmas spirit truly takes hold, and this year, Malta is brimming with festivities that will make your holiday unforgettable.
On the cover of this issue, we’re excited to spotlight The Nutcracker, a contemporary twist on the beloved classic presented by the Moveo Dance Company. This performance, held at Teatru Manoel, is just one of the many reasons to immerse yourself in the island's thriving theatre scene this December. But the stage is only the beginning; Malta’s cultural calendar is packed with pantomimes, concerts, and theatre performances, making it the perfect time for art lovers to explore.
Beyond the theatre, there’s no shortage of family-friendly activities, from fun-filled children’s events at Playmobil and Esplora to the dazzling Malta Illuminated Trail at the Verdala Palace, where the gardens are aglow with festive lights and displays. For foodies, the island is a gastronomic haven with tastings, markets, and indulgent feasts to savour. It’s a time for indulging in local delicacies like honey rings, roasted chestnuts, and festive mulled wine!
No visit to Malta is complete without experiencing Valletta in December. The city’s fairyland transformation in Triton Square features an artisan and food market, a sparkling Ferris wheel, and activities for all ages. And don’t forget to visit Gozo—it too is a magical winter destination, perfect for those seeking a quieter, picturesque escape.
So, what are you waiting for? Whether you're here for the theatre, the food, or simply to soak up the festive cheer, Malta is ready to wrap you in its holiday magic.

Explore the Science Behind Christmas Magic at Esplora
This year, Esplora’s Christmas activities will be running from 21 to 31 December, offering families a chance to explore, experiment, and enjoy the season while uncovering the science behind the holiday.
As Christmas approaches, many of us start to wonder about Santa’s ability to visit every home in a single night, how his reindeer manage to fly, and what science could possibly be behind these holiday miracles. These are the types of questions that inspire curiosity, and at Esplora– Malta’s much-loved Interactive Science Centre – this holiday season, we’re using the magic of Christmas to explore the wonders of science.
At Esplora, our mission is simple: we aim to make science accessible, engaging, and fun for all ages. But how do we achieve this? Through one of the most widely celebrated and culturally significant events of the year: Christmas.
The Link Between Christmas and Science
Studies show that many adults, especially those who don't work in science-related fields, often feel intimidated by science. This fear, often rooted in childhood experiences, can make science seem distant, "too complex," or even "nerdy." But the truth is, science is at the heart of everything we do. From understanding the natural world around us to the technology that powers our lives, science is an integral part of daily life.
So, how do we break down these barriers? How do we spark curiosity and encourage people to explore science, especially when many of us have been conditioned to view it as something foreign or overly complex?
The answer is simple: we meet people where they are.
By tying science concepts to something familiar, such as Christmas, we can transform science from something intimidating to something exciting. Christmas isn’t just about traditions and festivities; it’s also a perfect opportunity to dive into the realms of science in a fun and approachable way.
A
Christmas Wonderland of Science
At Esplora, we use Christmas as a central theme to introduce STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) concepts. Through hands-on activities and interactive exhibits, visitors can explore the science behind Santa’s sleigh, the biology of reindeer, and the physics of snowflakes. It’s a fun and festive way to engage with the concepts of the natural world while celebrating the holiday season.
This approach isn’t just about science for science's sake; it’s about creating an experience that grabs attention and stimulates curiosity. Research in science education shows that we learn best when we connect new knowledge to our existing experiences. By using familiar themes, such as holiday traditions, we make the learning process both meaningful and enjoyable.
Learning Through Storytelling
Christmas is rich with stories, from the tale of Santa Claus himself to the many cultural traditions that accompany the season. Storytelling is a powerful tool for learning. It captivates the imagination and helps us remember concepts by weaving them into a narrative we can relate to.
At Esplora’s 'Santa’s STEM Factory', guests can engage in a range of activities designed to get them thinking, experimenting, and learning through the lens of Christmas. Whether it's experimenting with the physics of flying reindeer, or discovering how the science of snowflakes relates to chemistry, these activities are designed to be both fun and educational.
Sparking Curiosity Through Experience
Ultimately, the goal is to inspire curiosity. We believe that curiosity is the key to learning, and that when people are engaged, learning happens naturally. Esplora’s hands-on exhibits encourage visitors to think critically, ask questions, and explore the world around them in new ways.
Visit Esplora this Christmas and explore the exciting world of science through festive, family-friendly activities. Whether you’re curious about how Santa’s sleigh stays airborne or how reindeer adapt to cold climates, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Bring your family and explore the wonder of Christmas through the lens of STEM at Esplora’s 'Santa’s STEM Factory'. Who knows, you might just discover the science behind the magic!

IN THE CITY . Christmas
by Terrence Mifsud
Malta's historic capital, Valletta, is a trove of culture, history, and exuberance. The city is renowned for its picturesque streets, lavish architecture, and rich cultural attractions. Valletta is transformed into an enchanting destination during the Christmas season, where the cheer and brightness of the season perfectly blend with the charm of its past.
Founded by the Knights of St. John in 1566, Valletta is steeped in history, and its layout reflects the grandeur of its origins. The city offers a distinctive setting for Christmas celebrations with its defensive walls, baroque palaces, and grid-like streets. Valletta's already remarkable architecture assumes a mystical air in December when it is decked out in festive garlands, sparkling lights, and vibrant decorations.
Christmas in Valletta is an immersive event that blends tradition and history with a festive flair, making it more than simply a visual feast. With its old warehouses converted into lively eateries and retail establishments, the Valletta Waterfront has become a centre of activity. It's the ideal location for a celebratory supper or a leisurely walk against the backdrop of the Grand Harbour.
Fairyland, Valletta's top Christmas destination at the Triton Fountain Square, is the focal point of the city's holiday festivities. This yearly occasion has grown to be a well-liked custom that attracts both residents and visitors. Fairyland is a multisensory spectacle situated in Triton Fountain Square, just outside the city walls.
It is also a haven for foodies. A range of seasonal goodies, including as mulled
wine, honey rings (qagħaq tal-għasel), and roasted chestnuts, are available at stalls and kiosks. The air is filled with the scent of these festive treats, which heightens the Christmas atmosphere.
During the Christmas season, Valletta's streets come alive with the bustle of holiday shoppers. The city's major streets, Republic Street and Merchants Street, are crowded with stores and booths selling a variety of contemporary presents, traditional crafts, and seasonal décor.
One of Valletta's highlights are the Christmas markets, which provide a warm and joyous ambiance. Local delicacies like nougat and Christmas biscuits are sold alongside toys and ornaments at stalls decked out with garlands and fairy lights. These markets are ideal for getting lastminute presents or just enjoying the festive atmosphere.
Valletta is also home to two iconic cultural venues: Teatru Manoel and the Mediterranean Conference Centre. Teatru Manoel, one of the oldest working theatres in Europe, hosts Christmas shows and pantomimes that delight audiences of all ages, adding a touch of theatrical magic to the holiday season. Meanwhile, the Mediterranean Conference Centre often features concerts and performances that enhance the festive atmosphere in the city.
The churches in Valletta are an important part of the city's Christmas festivities.
During the busy holiday season, the city is home to some of Malta's most exquisite churches, each of which exudes reverence and tranquility. St John's Co-Cathedral is one of the most important places to visit among them.
Valletta’s nightlife adds a vibrant layer to the city’s festive charm, with Strait Street at the heart of the excitement. Known for its rich history and revitalized atmosphere, Strait Street offers an eclectic mix of bars, bistros, and live music venues. During Christmas, the street buzzes with energy, offering everything from festive cocktails to impromptu performances, making it a perfect spot to continue the celebrations after a day of holiday activities.
Whether you're strolling through the alleys or dining at a charming café, the happy sights and sounds combine to create an incredible experience.

Explore Fairyland at Triton Fountain Square
Valletta's most famous Christmas attraction is Fairyland, which turns Triton Fountain Square into a wintry wonderland. Holiday scents fill the air as festive food stalls serve seasonal fare like mulled wine and roasted chestnuts. The enormous Ferris wheel, which provides stunning panoramic views of Valletta's skyline, port, and surrounding environs, is one of the main attractions. The ice rink is a must-see for families, offering a unique winter pastime in the Mediterranean.
Discover Traditional Nativity Cribs Across the City
The most elaborate and exquisite Nativity cribs (presepji), a beloved Christmas custom in Malta, may be found in Valletta. From private collections and local church exhibitions to the Malta National Museum of Archaeology, you may see cribs that range from intimate, handcrafted displays to creative marvels. Many of them incorporate local characters and Maltese landscapes, giving the biblical tale a more cultural feel. These displays provide a calm diversion from the bustle of the festive streets while revealing Maltese workmanship and faith.
Visit St John’s Co-Cathedral for Midnight Mass
A must-see throughout the Christmas season is Valletta's Baroque masterpiece, St. John's Co-Cathedral. On Christmas Eve, the cathedral celebrates a lovely Midnight Mass, during which a kid delivers a moving sermon, a distinctive Maltese custom that represents innocence and hope. During the holiday season, its lavish interior, which is embellished with stunning paintings and gilded carvings, is especially enchanting. Visitors are particularly drawn to the cathedral for its Christmas concerts, which feature mellow musical selections that capture the essence of the season.
Stroll Through Republic Street’s Christmas Lights
During the Christmas season, Valletta's busy main avenue, Republic Street, is transformed into a festive paradise. Evening walks are made more magical by the street's sparkling lights and decorations. Pop-up Christmas markets provide seasonal snacks, homemade crafts, and one-of-a-kind presents in addition to the glittering decorations.

Gozo’s Christmas celebrations are deeply rooted in tradition and religious significance. The island’s inhabitants have for centuries embraced the spirit of the season with heartfelt devotion and fervour. The festive period is marked by a series of religious ceremonies, including midnight mass and processions, which showcase the strong faith of the Gozitan people.
The Christmas story is brought to life through elaborate nativity scenes, festive lights, and live re-enactments. The island’s charming villages are adorned with twinkling lights, creating a magical atmosphere. Traditional carols fill the air, adding to the festive spirit. The sweet aroma of freshly baked qagħaq tal-għasel and imqaret wafts through the streets, enticing us with their delicious scents.
A Festive Extravaganza
Gozo’s Christmas celebrations offer a vibrant tapestry of events and activities. From traditional nativity scenes to modern-day festivities, the island is awash with holiday cheer.
Bethlehem f’Għajnsielem: A Living Nativity
Bethlehem f’Għajnsielem, the event that has enchanted thousands of visitors over the years, is a must-see for anyone visiting Gozo during the Christmas season. The nativity village is situated adjacent to the Għajnsielem main square, just a 5-minute walk from Mgarr Harbour. Appropriately called “Bethlehem f’Għajnsielem,” this life-size crib, constructed on 20,000 square meters of fields on a stretch of land known as Ta’ Passi, comes to life during the month of December with about 150 actors taking visitors back in time to Judea 2000 years ago.
The Annual Christmas Parade: A Festive Procession
The Annual Christmas Parade in Republic Street, Victoria, is a vibrant celebration of the island’s festive spirit and creativity. This year’s parade will feature a lively marching band, beautifully
decorated floats, and will be accompanied by Santa Claus and his elves. The procession will make its way up Republic Street, captivating locals and tourists alike, and will conclude at Independence Square, where D Capitals Band will perform a concert to end the festivities on a high note.
Christmas Markets: A Treasure Trove of Local Crafts and Delicacies
Gozo’s charming villages come alive during the festive season with a variety of Christmas markets. These markets offer a unique opportunity to discover local crafts, delicacies, and souvenirs. Visitors can browse through stalls selling handmade ornaments, traditional Gozitan sweets, artisanal products, and festive decorations. The markets also offer a chance to sample sweet and savoury local delicacies.
