The FinanceMalta 17th Annual Conference

This year, Malta has reached an unprecedented milestone in air connectivity, a vital pillar for the success of our tourism industry. Given that over 99% of our visitors arrive by air, the significance of enhancing and expanding our network of flight connections cannot be overstated.

Despite our geographical limitations as a small island nation, Malta has consistently demonstrated its resilience and ambition. In 2024, we have achieved the highest level of air connectivity in our history, an accomplishment that underscores our commitment to making Malta a popular destination in Europe and beyond.

By continuously punching above our weight, we have positioned ourselves as a key player in the tourism market.

Our success is built on the strength of a balanced and diverse air travel offering. The importance of maintaining a mix between legacy carriers and low-cost airlines is crucial to ensuring accessibility for a wide range of travelers while also catering to those seeking a more premium experience. This dynamic balance allows us to cater for visitor numbers without compromising on the

quality of the experience we offer.

From this month, Aer Lingus will be operating flights from Malta to Dublin three times a week. This exciting development not only strengthens our presence in Northern Europe but also opens up new possibilities for connections from the United States and Canada. This increased connectivity will undoubtedly boost our profile and attract visitors from key long-haul markets.

Furthermore, starting in March of next year, we will be welcoming Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), which will operate direct flights from Copenhagen to Malta twice a week. This new route is a significant step towards diversifying our markets and attracting high-quality tourists year-round, further solidifying Malta's reputation as a must-visit destination in the Mediterranean.

As we continue to expand our air connectivity, we remain focused on elevating Malta's tourism industry to new heights. Each new connection brings with it fresh opportunities for growth, development, and the continued success of our islands as a thriving hub of culture, history, and hospitality.

HISTORY & CULTURE

October in Malta is a vibrant month for history and culture, offering a rich array of events that celebrate the island's fascinating heritage, artistic traditions, and unique blend of Mediterranean influences.

Paradise Lost

Paradise Lost marks the debut solo exhibition of Jade Zammit, exploring the fragility of paradises, both real and imagined, as they unravel over time. Drawing inspiration from the 17th-century Gobelin tapestries in Valletta’s Grand Master’s Palace and themes from Paul Gauguin’s Tahitian series and Ben Okri’s The Famished Road, Zammit weaves personal memory with broader cultural themes. Her work delves into the discomfort of losing the natural world, prompting viewers to reflect on disillusionment, nostalgia, and the precariousness of paradise.

Malta Society of Arts, Valletta

For one special night, every first Saturday of October, the Valletta cityscape lights up with a spectacular celebration of the arts that is open to the public free of charge. HONOURING 450 YEARS OF VALLETTA'S SACRA INFERMERIA

The Sacra Infermeria celebrates 450 years since its founding and 45 years as a world-class venue, blending historic charm with modern functionality for conferences, cultural events and grand celebrations.

This year, the Sacra Infermeria—now known as the Mediterranean Conference Centre (MCC)—proudly celebrates two significant milestones. In 1574, Grand Master Jean de la Cassière, together with the Malta Chapter General of the Order of St John, commissioned the construction of this remarkable building, originally serving as a hospital dedicated to the care and healing of the community. Over the centuries, this architectural gem has undergone several transformations, continually adapting to meet the needs of the time.

Additionally, this year marks the 45th anniversary of its transformation into a world-class venue for international conferences, cultural events, banquets, and exhibitions. This evolution—from a place of physical healing to one of intellectual and cultural exchange—underscores the building's ongoing mission to enrich the wellbeing of its visitors by fostering connections and promoting the exchange of ideas among people from all over the globe.

These dual anniversaries not only highlight the rich heritage of the Sacra Infermeria but also emphasise the MCC’s enduring commitment to innovation and service for both present and future generations.

Situated near the tip of Valletta's peninsula, with breathtaking views across the Grand Harbour, the Mediterranean Conference Centre is one of the city's most iconic landmarks. In addition to its historical significance, the MCC is a premier venue for a wide range of events, from product launches

and exhibitions to conventions, banquets, weddings, and theatrical performances. As one of Europe’s largest conference centres housed within a historical building, the MCC is a rare example of a heritage structure seamlessly operating to meet the exacting demands of the 21st century.

The MCC boasts impressive spaces, including the Republic Hall, a grand auditorium with seating for 1,400 people, and the elegant La Valette Hall, a unique banqueting venue that accommodates up to 900 guests. The centre also offers a variety of individually styled, smaller halls suited for more intimate events.

Among these, the Sacra Infermeria Hall is the most striking. At 155 metres in length and covering 1,700 square metres, this main exhibition hall—once the Long Ward of the Sacra Infermeria—is one of the longest halls in Europe. Its architectural significance

was recognised as early as the 16th century, and today, it remains a stunning venue for banquets and large events, comfortably seating 1,200 people or hosting 2,400 for cocktail receptions.

The MCC’s offerings extend beyond its indoor spaces. The Grand Harbour Terrace, a sprawling 1,063-square-metre outdoor venue, provides an unforgettable setting for weddings or corporate events, offering panoramic views of the iconic Grand Harbour. Whether hosting an intimate gathering or a large-scale celebration, this terrace, especially at sunset when the sky glows a majestic orange, is unmatched in its beauty and atmosphere.

In every way, the Mediterranean Conference Centre combines historical grandeur with modern functionality, providing a truly unique venue for events of all kinds.

GOZO

Mgarr, Gozo

GOZO

Often considered a more serene and tranquil alternative to its bustling neighbour, Malta, Gozo is the second biggest island in the Maltese archipelago. Travellers looking for an authentic Mediterranean experience are drawn to Gozo by its stunning scenery, rich cultural legacy, and friendly people. This island is a treasure trove of natural beauty and historical significance, with magnificent beaches and old temples.

Reaching Gozo is a voyage in and of itself. Travelling by ferry is the most popular option, as it leaves from Malta's northern port of Cirkewwa, with multiple journeys carried out every single day. Those looking for a ‘smoother’ travel experience can also choose from organised tours or private boat excursions. Once in Gozo, travellers may easily explore the island by bus, bicycle, or foot due to its small size, which enables them to take their time and enjoy the breathtaking surroundings.

Gozo is well known for its breathtaking scenery, which includes some of the most exquisite beaches in the Mediterranean, as well as cliffs and valleys. Ramla Bay is a well-known location on the island due to its unique red sand and pristine seas. Here, visitors may swim, relax on the beach, or partake in a variety of water activities. Moreover, the bay is home to the neighbouring Calypso Cave.

One of the standout locations in Gozo is the Ta’ Ċenċ Cliffs, rising more than 130 metres above sea level. These majestic limestone cliffs offer breathtaking views of the Mediterranean and are a perfect spot for hiking or birdwatching, particularly for those interested in spotting rare seabirds.

Another natural treasure is Gozo’s salt pans, located along the northern coastline near Marsalforn. These centuries-old salt pans, carved into the rock, are still used today to harvest sea salt. The gleaming white pools create a surreal and picturesque landscape, especially at sunset, when the golden light reflects off the water. Visitors can explore

this unique area and even purchase locally produced salt, which is a testament to Gozo’s deep-rooted connection to traditional craftsmanship and natural resources.

With its striking coastline beauty, Dwejra Bay is another must-see natural treasure. Though the natural limestone arch known as the Azure Window fell in 2017, its surroundings remains outstanding with the Blue Hole—a well-liked diving location—and the Inland Sea—a charming lagoon with a tunnel connecting it to the open sea. Photographers and environment enthusiasts alike will find Dwejra Bay to be a photographer's dream due to its craggy cliffs and unusual rock formations.

Victoria, the capital of Gozo, is yet another intriguing cultural destination. The Citadel, a historically significant fortified city, is located in the centre of the town. Tourists may tour museums, meander through the charming alleyways, and take in the stunning Cathedral of the Assumption.

Enjoying Gozo's delectable cuisine is a mustdo while visiting the island. The island is well-known for its traditional cuisine, which frequently use products that are produced locally. Gozitan specialities like Ġbejniet (a traditional sheep's milk cheese) and fenek (rabbit sew), which is a must-try for meat aficionados, are available for visitors to enjoy. Excellent regional wines from the island's vineyards pair well with the food.

Gozo is a veritable wonderland of outdoor activities for the adventure-seeker. Hiking enthusiasts may discover breathtaking views of the shore and surrounding area from

picturesque routes that snake across the countryside. The island's varied topography offers chances for horse riding, rock climbing, and cycling. For individuals who wish to explore Gozo's natural beauties in greater detail, guided trips are offered.

Clear seas abounding with marine life make diving and snorkelling popular pastimes. Both beginning and expert divers will love exploring the Blue Hole and the nearby underwater caverns. To ensure that everyone can experience the underwater beauties, a number of diving schools on the island provide training and guided dives.

Gozo is a true hidden gem that provides the ideal fusion of leisure, culture, and adventure. The island offers unique experiences whether you choose to explore historic temples, relax on a beach in the sun, or indulge in regional cuisine. It's a great place for anyone who wants to get away from the bustle and take in the beauty of the Mediterranean. We highly recommend to allow ample time to explore Gozo and uncover its numerous gems while organising your trip.

GOZO'S AUTUMN EXTRAVAGANZA

Autumn in Gozo offers vibrant cultural events and outdoor adventures. From opera performances and kite festivals to scenic walks and enchanting lantern-lit evenings, October is the perfect time to experience this Mediterranean gem.

Autumn in Gozo is anything but boring. As the summer heat fades and the first rains nourish the countryside, the island is rejuvenated. Fields turn into a vibrant carpet of green, the air cools, and it becomes the perfect time to explore the island and embark on adventures that are more enjoyable in the milder weather. Even the sea remains warm enough for a refreshing dip. Yet, beyond nature’s charm, autumn sets the stage for some of Gozo’s most exciting events.

One of the most anticipated highlights of autumn is the Gozo Opera season. For years, this has been a key cultural event on the island, attracting both locals and visitors alike. Two iconic opera houses, Astra and Aurora, situated on the same street in Victoria, Gozo’s city, offer a series of breathtaking performances. The rivalry between the two ensures an exceptional standard, and this year is no exception. The 'Opera is Gozo' programme will unfold throughout October, providing opera enthusiasts with a month filled with music.

Kicking off the season is the third edition of the Ewfonija Grand Operatic Concert, a true celebration of talent. This event will feature celebrated soprano Marvic Baldacchino and tenor Alan Sciberras, who will perform a selection of operatic arias, accompanied by the Ewfonija Orchestra under the direction of Mariella Spiteri Cefai. Attendees can expect a night filled with masterpieces from legendary composers like Verdi, Puccini, Donizetti, and Massenet, promising a spectacular introduction to Gozo’s opera season.

Continuing the operatic offerings, Teatru tal-Opra Aurora will present Il Trittico on 12 October, marking 100 years since the death of Giacomo Puccini. This set of three one-act operas – Il Tabarro, Suor Angelica, and Gianni Schicchi – delves into themes of love, loss, and intrigue. With the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, the Aurora Opera Chorus, and an international cast, this production, directed by Riccardo Buscarini, is set to captivate audiences with its emotional depth and powerful performances.

Later in the month, Teatru Astra will Giovanna d'Arco, a rarely performed opera by Giuseppe Verdi, to the stage on 24 and 26 October. After more than 170 years, this opera returns to Malta, with soprano Sophie Gordeladze leading an exceptional cast. Under the baton of Mro Dr John Galea and directed by Enrico Stinchelli, this production will delve into the life of Joan

of Arc, exploring her heroism and sacrifice against the backdrop of the Hundred Years' War. With Verdi’s stirring score, this opera promises to be a deeply moving experience.

Beyond opera, October in Gozo has more to offer. The OASI Cup Run and Fun Walk on October 6th welcomes everyone from seasoned athletes to casual participants looking for a fun day out. Whether running or walking, this event is a wonderful way to enjoy Gozo’s scenic routes while spending quality time with friends and family.

For a more visually striking experience, the Gozo International Kite and Wind Festival will take place on 19 and 20 October. This event is a spectacle of creativity, with vibrant kites soaring through the sky, demonstrations, and kite-making workshops for all ages. Alongside these displays, there will be food stalls offering both local and international cuisine, along with craft vendors showcasing the best of Gozitan artistry. It’s a celebration against the stunning landscapes of the island, promising fun for the whole family.

October also brings a magical event in the small hamlet of Santa Luċija. On 13 October, this picturesque village hosts an open-air spectacle featuring local musical talents and a hillside illuminated by hundreds of fjakkoli – traditional Gozitan lanterns. As the sun sets, the lights create an ethereal atmosphere, transforming the countryside into a breathtaking wonderland. The combination of folk music and the flickering glow of the lights creates an enchanting evening, embodying the community spirit of Gozo.

Just a few days later, on 18 October, the Symphony of Lights will once again grace Santa Luċija. This event, with its mesmerising blend of music and lights, has become a cherished autumn tradition. With free admission, it warmly welcomes everyone to immerse themselves in its beauty and magic, making it a must-see for anyone seeking an unforgettable cultural experience.

In conclusion, Gozo in October is a celebration of culture, tradition, and natural beauty. Whether you're a fan of opera, outdoor activities, or simply looking to experience something unique, the island offers an array of events that cater to all tastes. Each occasion provides an opportunity to connect with the spirit of Gozo, making autumn the perfect time to discover this gem of the Mediterranean.

TA' ĦAĠRAT TEMPLES

INQUISITOR'S PALACE

The Ta' Ħaġrat Temples in the village of Mġarr are frequently overlooked by tourists, who opt to visit the more well-known Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra temples. These historic megalithic buildings, which are thought to have been built between 3600 and 3200 BC, offer an enlightening look at prehistoric Malta. Compared to its more well-known contemporaries, the temples are less crowded, enabling guests to take their time exploring the area. Ta' Ħaġrat, surrounded by stunning scenery, provides a calm setting ideal for contemplating Malta's ancient heritage.

Under the name Palazzo del Sant'Officio, the Inquisitor's Palace served as the Maltese Inquisition's headquarters from 1574 until 1798. Nowadays, the Inquisitor's Palace serves as both the national ethnographic museum and a historic home museum. Very few visitors spend enough time exploring the stunning grounds of Vittoriosa's Inquisitor's Palace. LASCARIS WAR ROOMS

A historical gem hidden underneath Malta’s capital city, Valletta. The Lascaris War Rooms are an underground complex of tunnels and rooms which housed the British War Headquarters where the defence and offense plans for Malta were strategically plotted during World War II. This room was also the most heavily guarded, as it housed the encryption machines which were used to send and receive top secret communications. You can visit the chambers, which have recently been restored and transformed into an accessible museum

DISCOVERING MALTA STONE’S RICH LEGACY

Emily A. Francis visits Malta Stone in Ta’ Qali, a family-owned shop offering unique stone creations, custom jewellery, and rare gems.

Located in the scenic village of Ta’ Qali, Malta Stone is much more than just a shop—it's a tribute to Malta’s rich artisanal heritage. Founded in 1969 by Reuben Schembri’s father, this family-owned business has grown into a renowned destination for stone

enthusiasts, collectors, and admirers of natural beauty. Reuben has carried on his father's traditions, preserving the craftsmanship while infusing it with his own passion for stones and gems from around the world.

As you step inside Malta Stone, you’re greeted by a warm, welcoming atmosphere that invites you to explore the island’s finest natural treasures. From glittering gems and crystals to custom-made jewelry, stone tabletops, intricate wall clocks, and other one-of-a-kind creations, Malta Stone showcases a world of artistry crafted from the earth’s natural resources.

From Maltese Calcite to Global Treasures Malta Stone’s roots lie deep in the local landscape. Originally, the store focused solely on Maltese calcite—an exquisite stone sourced from the island’s own limestone quarries. Reuben and his father began their journey by crafting beautiful, handcrafted items from these locally

sourced stones, establishing a reputation for creating exquisite clocks from raw stone slabs. The clocks remain one of Malta Stone's most iconic creations, each one a unique work of art that reflects both the island's natural beauty and the artisans' skill.

Though local calcite still remains a cornerstone of the shop’s offerings, Malta Stone has since expanded its horizons, incorporating stones from all over the world. Reuben now curates a breathtaking selection of rare and exotic stones, each with its own unique story. Some of the prized items in the store include hard-tofind apophyllite crystals, stunning desert rose selenite formations, and massive amethyst geodes. These treasures, sourced from different corners of the globe, make Malta Stone a must-visit destination for collectors seeking rare and striking pieces.

Craftsmanship That Honours Nature’s Beauty

At the heart of Malta Stone is Reuben’s philosophy of respecting and showcasing the natural beauty of each stone. Every piece begins its journey as a raw slab, brought in to Reuben’s stone cutter, who carefully slices one side of the slab to reveal what they call “the window of the stone.” This first glimpse into the stone’s core reveals its true character—its colors, textures, and patterns. It’s this moment that guides Reuben and his team in deciding how to best shape the stone into a beautiful, functional piece.

Reuben has a deep understanding of each stone he works with. He instinctively knows how to highlight its natural features, ensuring that every clock, jewelry piece, or decorative item created at Malta Stone is truly one-of-a-kind. The store’s selection of clocks, in particular, has become a signature item, each crafted from raw slabs and featuring the stone’s natural, unpolished edge. These pieces blend elegance with the raw beauty of nature,

making them treasured keepsakes.

A Paradise for Stone Collectors and Jewellery Lovers

For stone collectors, visiting Malta Stone is like stepping into a paradise of rare and beautiful minerals. The shop’s selection is constantly evolving, featuring a wide range of crystals, gems, and stones that are difficult to find elsewhere. Collectors will be especially delighted by the stunning display of apophyllite, amethyst, desert rose selenite, and more. The stones' varying hues and intricate formations captivate the imagination and offer something for every type of enthusiast, whether they’re seasoned collectors or simply discovering a love for natural gems.

In addition to its stone collection, Malta Stone is well known for its custom jewellery services. If you’re looking to repair a cherished piece of jewellery or have something unique designed just for you, Reuben and his team offer personalised

consultations to ensure your vision is brought to life. Their craftsmanship is impeccable, and their friendly, approachable service makes the process enjoyable from start to finish.

A Shop That Reflects Passion and Expertise

One of the standout qualities of Malta Stone is the passion that Reuben and his team bring to their work. The shop’s reputation has grown over the years not just because of the quality of their stones, but also due to the warmth and expertise that visitors experience when they walk through the door. Reuben’s deep understanding of stones and gems is matched by his friendly and welcoming nature, making each visit to Malta Stone feel personal and memorable.

Whether you're a seasoned stone collector or a casual visitor looking for a special piece, you'll leave with more than just a purchase—you’ll have a deeper appreciation for the beauty and significance of the natural world.

EXPERIENCING MALTESE GASTRONOMY AND ITS RICH CULINARY JOURNEY

Discover the rich tapestry of Maltese gastronomy, where fresh local ingredients and centuries of diverse influences come together to create iconic dishes that reflect the island's vibrant culture and history.

Maltese gastronomy is a vibrant tapestry assembled from many ethnic influences and centuries of history. The island's cuisine is influenced by the tastes of Italy, Great Britain, and North Africa as well as its ties to the Knights of St. John and the ancient Phoenicians.

Fresh, locally sourced ingredients are central to Maltese cuisine. Malta has a plethora of fruits, vegetables, and herbs that are the foundation of many traditional

Ġgantija temples

recipes due to the Mediterranean climate of the islands. In every Maltese kitchen, you might find staples like Maltese olives, juicy tomatoes, and sweet peppers. Fresh seafood is also essential; frequent catches on local menus include swordfish, octopus, and anchovies.

A must-try during this season is lampuki, or mahi-mahi, which is particularly abundant during this time of the year. This delicious fish is often featured in seasonal dishes like lampuki pie, made with fresh

vegetables such as spinach and olives, all enveloped in a light pastry crust. This dish is a true reflection of Maltese home cooking, showcasing the best of local seafood.

Fenkata, a rabbit stew that honours the island's long history of rabbit hunting, is an iconic local staple that ought to be tested by every tourist that steps foot on the island. Every family has its own unique recipe for this meal, which is often made with a combination of tomatoes, herbs,

Pastizzi

and red wine. Fenkata is usually served during family get-togethers and important events as a sign of hospitality and tradition. Pastizzi, flaky pastries stuffed with spicy pea mixture or ricotta, are another favourite among the Maltese. Nearly all cafés and bakeries serve these salty treats, which are best enjoyed with a hot cup of tea or Kinnie, a Maltese malty-sweet soft drink.

A hearty meal that epitomises Maltese home cooking is bragioli, or beef olives. Thin beef slices are filled with a blend of bread crumbs, herbs, and occasionally hard-boiled eggs, and subsequently simmered in a flavourful tomato sauce. In order to absorb the sauce, bragioli is typically served over mashed potatoes or crusty bread.

The many civilisations that have impacted the island have left their mark on Maltese food. Particularly Italian food has had a lasting impression, bringing pasta, pizza, and risotto to Malta—often with a regional twist. For instance, rabbit spaghetti creates a cuisine that is exclusively Maltese by combining Italian cooking methods with local ingredients. Spices from North Africa, such saffron, cumin, and coriander, are frequently used in Maltese cooking.

No exploration of Maltese food is complete without addressing the island's delectable delicacies. Locals love cannoli, sweets filled with sweetened ricotta.

One of the highlights of Maltese desserts is figolla, a beloved treat especially popular around Easter. These traditional pastries are made from a sweet, almond-infused dough that is often shaped into intricate designs, resembling animals or symbolic figures, reflecting Malta’s rich cultural heritage. Each figolla is generously filled with a mixture of ground almonds, sugar, and citrus zest, providing a delightful contrast of flavours.

Visiting a local market is essential if you really want to sample Maltese cuisine. Every
