Valletta. Malta’s capital, built by gentlemen for gentlemen. A UNESCO World Heritage Site. Across all these hundreds of years since its inception, the island’s main city has developed into a historic, cultural, commercial and entertainment hub throughout the year. From the 90% of the thousands of tourists heading to the Maltese archipelago include Valletta on the top of their itinerary.

This is something that we are super proud of. However, Valletta shall pursue it’s evolving path to ensure public higher standards and a better touristic offer to all those who visit the city. Nowadays, order is becoming an increasing demand from domestic and foreign tourists.

It is with this mindset in mind that we introduced a Valletta Management Plan to cement better standards within the capital. A special emphasis will be done in relation to maintenance, upkeep, order, safety annd accessibility. This will in turn safeguard the local community, and increase the quality of Product Malta for incoming tourists.

The good news is that our plan is well underway. We have introduced the Valletta Stewards to act as a deterrent for vandalism and illegalities, to keep order, help locals and tourists to ensure that everyone is adhering to laws and regulations.

Another initiative is the implementation of new signs which will be installed around Valletta, to ease mobility and facilitate information for those who are willing to enjoy its splendour architecture, museums, monuments and famous squares.

Ancillary to the above, we are in process to provide a more “green” aspect to our capital city. In the months and years to come, Valletta will be having public areas that are more environmentally friendly.

The need for adjourning is crucial in the today’s tourism world. Having a more organised capital city is of vital importance to ensure that Valletta’s offer to tourists is authentic and immense in experience.

15 AUGUST: MALTA'S FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION

Celebrated on 15 August, the Assumption of St Mary (Santa Marija) in Malta blends profound religious devotion with lively festivities, creating an unforgettable cultural and spiritual experience.

Celebrated on August 15th annually, the Assumption of St. Mary is an iconic occasion in Malta that combines intense religious observance with lively celebrations. This feast day, which is celebrated locally as ’Santa Marija’, is a significant spiritual occasion and a source of great cultural joy on the island. A pillar of Catholic dogma, the Assumption of St. Mary commemorates the time the Virgin Mary was carried into heaven at the close of her earthly existence. Although this concept has its roots in early Christian traditions, Pope Pius XII codified it as dogma in 1950. A strong reminder of Mary's exalted position as the Queen of Heaven, the Assumption serves as a poignant moment in the spiritual life of Maltese Catholics.

Malta’s devotion to Mary is long-standing and entwined with the island's religious customs. The celebration honours Mary's journey to heaven while also illuminating the profound Marian devotion that permeates Maltese society. Every Maltese village/city that celebrates the feast has a diverse range of events to commemorate the Assumption of St. Mary, each contributing a unique local flair to the

national festivities. Solemn religious observances start the day. On the feast of the Assumption, churches across Malta celebrate special masses. Beautiful liturgies, ornate décor, and a keen sense of community worship are characteristics of these ceremonies. Statues of the Virgin Mary are frequently displayed in processions, frequently accompanied by prayers and hymns.

Apart from religious ceremonies, the nearby communities commemorate with vibrant feasts called ‘festas’. Towns become vibrant centres of activity because of these events. Celebrated in seven distinct locations throughout the island— Mqabba, Qrendi, Mosta, Attard, Gudja, Għaxaq, and Victoria in Gozo—the Feast of the Assumption (Santa Marija) is characterised by vibrant processions, street celebrations, and neighbourhood get-togethers. Local bands perform traditional music as lights and banners cover the streets. Both locals and visitors are drawn into the spirit of the occasion

The striking fireworks displays that light up the night sky are one of the centrepieces of the Assumption celebrations. Parades with traditional dance, music, and extravagant costumes frequently accompany these exhibits. In addition to being visually stunning, the colourful pyrotechnics represent the happiness and celebration of the feast. A typical aspect of summertime in Malta is the festive atmosphere created by the parades and fireworks.

The Assumption of St. Mary is a celebration of culture, history, and community more than just a religious holiday. Whether attracted by the lively celebrations or its spiritual importance, guests are guaranteed a fascinating and varied experience. Santa Marija is a special and unforgettable event in Malta's cultural calendar because of the combination of sombre religious observance and exuberant local festivity.

A LOOK INTO THE MALTA NATIONAL AQUARIUM

We sit down with Mark Pace, Marketing Director of the Malta National Aquarium, located at the northernmost tip of Qawra and home to an impressive 50 tanks, filled with reptiles, insects, amphibians and, of course, fish.

The Malta National Aquarium has become one of the biggest attractions in the north of Malta. What do you think makes it a unique tourist attraction point?

The Malta National Aquarium project is spread over approximately 20,000 square metres and consists of an aquarium, a public landscaped belvedere on the promenade, a multistorey car park, facilities for local dive schools, catering facilities including a beach club, a merchandise outlet and a tourist information kiosk. The Malta National Aquarium has 50 tanks including reptiles, insects and amphibians, amongst others, Mediterranean fish, including fish commonly found in Maltese waters as well as replicas of historical artefacts that one can find in the seas surrounding the Maltese islands.

The main tank of the aquarium houses species from the Indo-Pacific Ocean, including black tip sharks, zebra sharks, leopard sharks, bamboo sharks, rays, eels and other exotic species. The main tank is approximately 12

meters in diameter and has a walk-through tunnel that allows visitors to experience the fish at a much closer range. All tanks are expertly themed to replicate the underwater environment. Additional features of the public aquarium include a laboratory, food preparation room and quarantine facilities.

The Malta National Aquarium complex is in an iconic curved shell structure in the form of a starfish. The adjacent promenade provides additional recreation facilities for pedestrians including a children’s play area.

We also offer curricula related activities with the Aquarium education team to supplement the students’ visit. We provide an array of public talks daily that help promote awareness on essential issues such as littering, loss of species and conservation. This concept of interactive teaching will eventually help change the traditional way of learning. Our aim is to be the leading entity for the preservation of the marine life and its environment. We do this by instilling a sense of environmental responsibility in our visitors and members of staff. We practise what we preach and therefore fully respect the environment throughout our operations. Through collaboration with various local NGOs we have undergone a number of projects to further promote awareness and education amongst school kids and adults. The aquarium is divided into different

zones according to which area, time period, or species they represent. Can you explain what each and every zone has to offer?

In The Malta National Aquarium we have five different zone offering different enviroments for one to discover.

ZONE 1: MALTA’S WESTERN SHORELINE & SUBMARINE

This zone consists primarily of Mediterranean species that can be found locally in Malta.

Don’t forget to look out for the skates hiding beneath the sand! Often known as undulate rays, these type of skates are common in our seas and are a type of cartilaginous fish closely related to sharks and stingrays.

In this area you’ll also find our jellyfish station and go through a submarine. This submarine is a replica of the HMS Stubborn submarine used during World War II, which is now a very popular dive site located 3 km away from Qawra point. You will find a number of surprises when looking through the windows of the submarine such as the octopus, sea anemones, clownfish and beautiful coral reefs.

Conservation of our ocean and raising awareness is one of our main objectives. Thanks to our collaboration with the NGO Sharklab, you may observe eggcases and baby

sharks of nursehound and small-spotted catsharks in this zone. These egg cases are rescued from the fish market, taken care of by our Back of House team and then released back into Maltese waters.

ZONE 2: VALLETTA HARBOUR

When entering the Grand Harbour zone, you will find yourself surrounded by a beautiful mural of Malta’s majestic harbour, a display of a rockpool and a variety of local species.

The Grand Harbour, together with Valletta’s historic architectural buildings, features the marine habitat within the port area and is rich in Mediterranean aquatic species. This area features a replica of the Couvre Porte built during the 1716-1730, which was a gateway that provided access into the city of Vittoriosa.

ZONE 3: TROPICAL SEAS

The tanks in this area host marine life from the Indo-Pacific region, displaying numerous shoals of colourful fish and also a few species of sharks.

The marine biodiversity in these waters is astounding, but our main tank also hosts a wreck which is a replica of the Um El Faroud, a Lybian tanker which exploded following maintenance work in 1995 in Malta shipbuilding. The wreck sits upright on the sandy seabed southwest of Malta.

ZONE 4: ROMAN TIMES

This zone characterises an ancient shipwreck as well as replicas of ancient Roman remains. The anchor displayed in this area is a replica of the original anchor of St Paul’s shipwreck which was found in 2005 and is currently placed at the Malta Maritime Museum. Such anchor is thought to be the one used by Saint Paul during his voyage to Malta. There is also the Jesus Christ statue which represents the statue which was sunk in commemoration of the Pope’s visit to Malta in 1990 near St Paul’s islands.

ZONE 5: RAINFOREST

These themed exhibits combine the Maltese megalithic temples and the beauty of the rainforest which most species in this area call home. Intertwined in a perfect symbiosis and with the presence of all sorts of freshwater species, they leave us wondering what stories this interesting mix would have to tell.

Are there any restaurants?

La Nave Bistro is our flag ship restaurant which is situated under the Aquarium dome, the restaurant is open everyday for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We also have a Kiosk part of the complex situated in the Piazza next to the Aquarium serving an array of snacks and beverages.

Which are some of the most impressive species we can see?

The Malta National Aquarium has 50 tanks with approx 250 speciies of fish, reptiles, insects and amphibians, amongst others, Mediterranean fish, including fish commonly found in Maltese waters other species come from Indo pacific oceans and various rivers and lakes around the world. Howevevr from all the species we have inside the Aquarium the all time favourite of all are our Zebra, and black tip reef sharks.

Are there any special activities held at the aquarium?

On a daily basis on the hour we have talks on different topics, baby shark talk, octopus talks, jellyfish talks, reptile talks and many other interesing topics.

You also offer back of house tours. Can you describe the experience of such a tour? Experience the back of house tour, which includes visits to the quarantine area, food prep area, laboratory, filtration system, and the main tank from above. This can be booked directly on your arrival at the Aquarium tours are held every hour during the day.

Do visitors need to pre-book? From where can they find all the information they need?

You dont need to pre book. You can by tickets at the door or online on www. aquarium.com.mt

MGARR, GOZO

Tucked away inside the picturesque Mediterranean archipelago of Malta, Mġarr on the island of Gozo is a town rich in culture and history. This little yet dynamic town provides a unique fusion of historical significance, modern appeal, and scenic beauty. Mġarr, the primary port of Gozo, welcomes guests with a magnificent harbour and a wealth of activities, acting as the entryway to this charming island.

Mġarr's past is related to its crucial marine position. For generations, the port has served as an essential hub for trade, transportation, and cross-cultural interactions between Gozo and its neighbouring islands. Mġarr's significance was acknowledged by the Knights of St. John, who controlled Malta from 1530 until 1798, and they strengthened it to stave off any attacks. The mid-18th-century remnants of Fort Chambray serve as a reminder of this historical period. The fortress, which was once planned to be a walled town, today gives visitors a look into Gozo's defensive history and offers sweeping views of the harbour and the surroundings. It is believed that the name "Mġarr" comes from the Arabic word "mġar," meaning "port," reflecting its historical links to the sea.

Mġarr is situated on the southeastern shore of Gozo, and it is regularly connected to Cirkewwa on the main island of Malta mainly by ferry. The harbour is renowned for its lively bustle, where ferries, yachts, and fishing boats congregate to create a vibrant marine ambiance. Terraced farms, little towns, and a rocky shoreline characterise the surrounding area, providing tourists with a scenic environment to explore.

Mġarr has several remarkable features that make it a unique destination. The 25-minute boat ride between Malta and Gozo provides breathtaking views of the island's shoreline and the Mediterranean Sea. Reputable for its crystal-clear Blue Lagoon, the little island of Comino is only a short boat trip from Mġarr. This picturesque location draws visitors from all over the world, offering great opportunities for swimming, snorkelling, and diving.

The Lourdes Chapel is a quaint 19thcentury religious chapel situated atop a hill with a view of the harbour. It is a distinctive landmark in Gozo whose construction draws inspiration from the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes in France. This chapel is not only a place of prayer but also provides stunning views of Mġarr and the surrounding area. If you are interested in Gozo's history, we recommend you make your way to the Għarb Folklore Museum, which is only a short drive from Mġarr. This museum provides an in-depth look into Gozitan customs by displaying items connected

to farming, fishing, and everyday life on the island.

The stories surrounding Mġarr lend an air of mystery to its attraction. Calypso's Cave is the subject of one well-known mythology. Situated a short distance from Mġarr, close to the settlement of Xaghra, this cave is said to be the same one that the nymph Calypso used to imprison Odysseus for seven years in Homer's "Odyssey." Myth or fact, the cave draws a lot of tourists who are enthralled with its literary allusions and the expansive views it provides.

Several eateries and cafés surrounding the harbour provide traditional Gozitan delicacies, making the local food even an attraction on its own. Anyone who visits should try the fresh fish, local wines, and ġbejniet (Gozitan cheeselets). A superb gourmet experience is offered by the culinary scene, which reflects the island's agricultural wealth and its Mediterranean influences.

Along with offering access to all of Gozo's many attractions, such as the Azure Window ruins at Dwejra, the Ggantija Temples, and the towns of Nadur and Qala, Mġarr also serves as the starting point for a variety of trips and excursions. Whether you are interested in its historic fortifications, or excited to take part in the local celebrations, or just ready to take in the breathtaking views of the coast— Mġarr has a lot to offer that perfectly encapsulates Gozo.

THINGS TO DO AND SEE IN AND AROUND MĠARR, GOZO

VISIT FORT CHAMBRAY

Built by the Knights of St John in the middle of the eighteenth century, Fort Chambray is a medieval stronghold that overlooks Mġarr harbour perched on a hill. The fort, which was once meant to be a fortified town, provides insight into Gozo's defensive history. Explore its well-preserved bastions and take in expansive views of the surrounding landscape and harbour. Because of its advantageous location, the fort is a suitable place to take pictures, learn about Gozo's military past, and take in the stunning surroundings.

ENJOY TRADITIONAL CUISINE AT MĠARR MARINA

There are several superb eateries and cafés in Mġarr Marina that provide authentic Gozitan food. Fresh seafood, including locally caught fish and shellfish, is available for guests to enjoy. Traditional Gozitan pizza called ftira and cheeselets called ġbejniet are also renowned. Dining on the waterfront offers a tranquil setting with views of the busy harbour and the boats drifting leisurely by. The marina is an ideal location for relaxing, enjoying mouthwatering regional cuisine, and taking in the friendliness of the Gozitan people.

DISCOVER CALYPSO'S CAVE

Calypso's Cave, located near the town of Xaghra and a few kilometres from Mġarr, is steeped in folklore. Beautiful sweeping views of Ramla Bay and the surrounding landscape may be seen from the cave. Explore the cave's inside and conjure up the old tales that go along with it. Travelers will find the place to be intriguing as it perfectly combines literary heritage with the beauty of nature.

HOP ON A FERRY TO COMINO

The Blue Lagoon on the adjacent island of Comino is a mustsee site and only a short boat journey from Mġarr. The lagoon, which is well-known for its glistening blue waters, is ideal for diving, snorkelling, and swimming. Travelers from all over the world are drawn to this lovely location by its breathtaking natural beauty. In addition to swimming in the cool waters and exploring the underwater marine life, visitors may unwind on the rocky coastline.

One of the world's earliest philosophers, Plato, said, "The sea cures all ailments of man." If so, Gozo's various beaches sprawled around its perimeter are ideal for an inspiring and rejuvenating beach holiday.

If you're dreaming of a laid-back beach holiday in Gozo where the days lazily stretch out amid the soothing rhythmic sound of waves on a sandy beach or the crystalline turquoise waters in rocky coves evoke a laid-back sense of adventure, here are our suggestions for a holiday meant to embrace the invigorating salty seawater that leaves you refreshed and revitalised.

If you're seeking the unique vibe of a Gozitan morning bliss and waking up to a blended palette of colours of sunrise over the sea, make sure that you pick up accommodation with the bonus of a sea view, as this will allow you to have a calm cup of coffee even from your balcony while the world is still asleep. If you stay close to the beach, you can relish an early morning dip as the sun rises. Mġarr ix-Xini & Ħondoq beaches are prime sunrise beaches where you can indulge in the majestic view of the sun breaking through the water. Both beaches are on the island's eastern side, and watching the sunrise at these beaches is akin to watching a painting come to life, where each moment is fleeting and quiet simultaneously, inspiring with a fresh aura of endless possibilities. A dip at this hour of the day, where the beach is still silent, reverberates with positive energy.

Plan your Gozo beach holiday days by ensuring you get a dose of beachside serenity daily while exploring the island's different beaches. If you love sandy beaches, Ramla has to be at the top of your list, followed closely by its sibling San Blas Beach, with the latter having a more rugged and raw appeal. It is important to note that Ramla Bay is more accessible, making it ideal for families with little children. Both Ramla and San Blas are notorious for the striking red sand in contrast with the sea's deep blue and the sky's lighter blue. Once at the beach, find your perfect spot, and if you're staying longer, an umbrella is a must to avoid being scorched by the sun. You might love the gritty feeling of the sand and spread out your towel, or you might opt to hire a sun lounger. As soon as you recline, time seems to slow once the sun's rays and the magnificent vista envelop you in the rhythmic sound of the waves. If the beach inspires you to move, you can take a gentle jog or a walk along the water's edge. The sensation of the cool water lapping at your ankles is enough to entice you for

a swim in the clear waters. Snorkelling is one of the best ways to discover the spellbinding underwater world.

Other Gozo sandy beaches include Ħondoq ir-Rummien and Daħlet Qorrot, renowned for their crystalline clear waters and snorkelling. Ħondoq ir-Rummien is a perfect family beach, providing a safe area for younger children and a spot from where youngsters can revel in the thrill of diving off the rocks or engaging in water sports. Daħlet Qorrot offers the vibe of an

authentic fishermen's place, complete with huts hewn into the rock overlooking the beach. The beach also has a pebbly and rocky area, and a stone's throw away lies one of Gozo's secret beaches, San Filep.

If you love rocky coves, Gozo’s rugged beaches and hidden inlets will be a joy to discover. The cove of Mġarr ix-Xini, emerging at the end of the deep gorge, is a beautiful spot that divers also favour for the amazing underwater scenes. It is also the beach

For a slice of tranquility, Wied il-Għasri Beach in the sleepy village of Għasri is your go-to. Located in a dramatic sea gorge, this beach, with its golden sand and deep blue waters, is a natural beauty. Pack your own supplies though – it's rustic and unspoiled.

Wied il-Għasri

where Angelina Jolie's film 'By the Sea' was filmed. On the other side of the island lies Xlendi Bay, offering a smaller sandy spot and an array of rocky ledges, perfect for sunbathing or diving into the water. If you're up for an adventure, take a break from swimming and climb up the staircase chiselled in the rock that leads to Caroline's Cave. Like Xlendi, Dwejra is another beach facing the sunset. However, Dwejra's beach is unique because you'll be exploring an inland lagoon connected to the open sea through a large tunnel. Another cove worth noting is Gozo's mini fjord, Wied il-Għasri, a mesmerising inlet where the sea serpentines through the chasm, ending at a captivating beach that is only reached via a steep flight of steps. Beyond Wied il-Għasri lie Xwejni and Qbajjar. Xwejni is more famous for its salt pans, and the beach of Qbajjar lies next door to Gozo's traditional summer resort, Marsalforn. If unwinding also means excitement, seek out water sports like jet skiing, towables, kayaking, and standup paddleboarding. Do not miss out on a boat trip https://www.visitgozo.com/blog/adventureawaits-a-journey-by-boat/that will allow you to set your eyes on the coastal vistas.

When it comes to dining out or savouring a quick bite, you will be delighted to know that at most beaches, you will stumble upon beachside cafés, kiosks, or restaurants serving food. Make sure you try out the traditional ħobż biż-żejt. Traditionally, this is what Gozitans take as a packed lunch for a day at the sea. The thick, crusty sandwich with a filling of tomatoes, tuna, olives,

and capers is a Mediterranean scrumptious meal in its own right. Alternatively, ask for fresh seafood and discover some favoured seaside restaurants. Many of the restaurants at beaches like Marsalforn, Xlendi, and Dwejra offer an array of authentic seafood dishes but you can also get seafood salads, seafood pizza, and platters!

If you're still keen on the beach after lunch, it is advisable to seek shade or ensure you have adequate sun protection. However, retiring for a soothing siesta in the comfort of your accommodation is favoured by many. After all, you can always return to the beach in the late afternoon just in time to capture the sunset. Cherish the colourful hues of the sunset display while sipping a cocktail at vantage points in Xlendi, Dwejra, and Xwejni.

As the mellow vibe of beach evenings sets in, take a moonlit stroll along the beach promenade or settle down at a seafront restaurant while basking in the enchanting flickering reflections of the night lights over the dark sea. Discover the local wines and more authentic dishes in a tranquil Mediterranean ambiance under a starry sky.

You will soon realise that a laid-back beach in Gozo is not only about the sand, sea, and sun. Embracing simplicity and relaxation at the Gozitan beaches will allow you to unwind, revitalise, and find new inspirations.

THE FORTIFICATIONS THAT SHAPED MALTA

Explore Malta's remarkable fortifications, from Fort St Elmo to Fort St Angelo, reflecting a history of courage, conquest, and resilience amid breathtaking Mediterranean landscapes. Discover tales of bravery and strategic ingenuity.

Malta was once a strategic treasure in the middle of the Mediterranean. Now remains a rich history intertwined with tales of courage and conquest. The island's remarkable defences, which have served as quiet sentinels against attackers for generations were undeniably essential. These architectural wonders display the creativity and tenacity of Malta's inhabitants, reflecting the country's turbulent past.

The Imposing Fort St Elmo

Fort St Elmo, which is perched atop Valletta, has seen some of the most momentous events in Maltese history. Built in 1552 by the Knights of St John, this star-shaped stronghold was essential to the outcome of the Great Siege of 1565. Fort St. Elmo was the centre of intense combat when the Ottoman Empire mounted a huge attack on the island. The knights showed unmatched bravery by holding their ground for more than a month despite being outnumbered. The National War Museum is in the fort today, and visitors can

Fort St Elmo
Fort St Angelo

peruse relics and displays that vividly depict this momentous era.

One of the best examples of military architecture is the city of Valletta. Designed to be impenetrable Valletta was founded in 1566 by Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette in the wake of the Great Siege. At the time, its deep moats, curtain walls, and colossal bastions were novel defences. The defensive features and grid plan of the city made it one of the most sophisticated strongholds of its time. Famous locations include the Lascaris War Rooms, a subterranean network of tunnels utilised during World War II, and the Upper Barrakka Gardens, which provide stunning views of the Grand Harbour.

The Majestic Fort St Angelo

Standing guard above the Grand Harbour, Fort St. Angelo was an important addition

to the medieval bastioned forts erected by the Knights of St John. During the Great Siege, it was crucial in rebuffing Ottoman forces as the headquarters for the Order's navy. The tales of men who bravely defended Malta against insurmountable odds reverberate within the walls of the fort. Parts of it have been rebuilt, such as the Upper Fort, which provides sweeping views of Valletta and the harbour.

The Coastal Defences: Fort Ricasoli and Fort Tigné

Fort Ricasoli and Fort Tigné, strategically positioned at the Grand Harbour's entrance, are essential components of Malta's coastal defences. One of Malta's biggest forts, Fort Ricasoli was finished in 1698 and was vital to the defence of the island during several wars, including World War II. Despite being half destroyed, it nonetheless serves as a

reminder of the island's military history.

Contrarily, Fort Tigné is a more contemporary structure that was built in the late 18th century by the British. It is one of the first polygonal forts and played a crucial role in the 1798 French blockade. The two forts provide distinct perspectives on several eras of military construction and tactics.

More than just bricks and mortar, Malta's defences symbolise the island's tenacity and strategic significance. Every wall, bastion, and fort narrate a tale of invasions and heroes, of war and conquering.

Visitors can travel back in time and witness the unwavering spirit of a country that has persevered against the passage of time by exploring these ancient defences, which provide an engrossing trip through Malta's turbulent past.

EUROPE’S EVER-CHANGING POLITICAL LANDSCAPE AND ITS IMPACT ON THE EUROPEAN PROJECT

Directorate for European Affairs, Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade

Undoubtedly, the political landscape in Europe is undergoing significant shifts, which are partly a result of a combination of the lingering effects of the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and the rise of far-right populist movements on the continent.

The national elections held across Europe over the last few years, and the European Parliament elections in June 2024 are proof of increased political volatility, that can also be seen as an outcome of the rise of the far right and of the growing contrast between political forces. This resulted

in right-wing parties gaining ground across European countries and within the EU; from Hungary, to Italy, to the Netherlands, and, most recently, France. In fact, in the 2024 European Parliament elections France’s far-right National Rally triumphed over President Emmanuel Macron's centrist coalition Ensemble, leading to a significant political shake-up and prompting President Macron into calling a highrisk snap election, gambling on the

assertion that voters will halt the farright's momentum in France and deal a defeat to Le Pen's party on the national level.

The overall surge in the support for

far-right parties stems from various factors, including widespread concerns about immigration policies, the inadequate address of socioeconomic tensions, in turn also raising nationalist sentiments and the desire of certain sections of society to prioritise national identity once more. This was coupled by a general dissatisfaction with the traditional centrist parties and the economic instability that the continent is facing.

Turning to the EU, its future and policies are currently under considerable scrutiny, both within domestic politics and in the realm of international relations. Eurosceptic sentiments, particularly from far-right parties, present challenges to the EU's trajectory. However, these parties remain divided on key issues such as fiscal responsibilities and support for Ukraine. Ultimately, the impact of these radical right-wing parties in the European Parliament will hinge on their capacity to form a cohesive front.

As from July 2024 Hungary has taken over the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union and has put forward several priorities it wants to tackle during its six months at the helm. Apart from increasing EU competitiveness and defence production capabilities, addressing the issue of migration, and start consultations with member states on reforming cohesion and common agricultural policies, Hungary is also set to prioritise the enlargement process of the EU.

Despite increasing doubts about democracy across the continent, voters have directed bold statements towards their national governments. This was evident in the UK's general election, which marked the end of a long period of centre-right populism and ushered in an exceptionally powerful centre-left Labour government. Whilst the result was a historic loss for the Conservative

party, who had been in power for fourteen years, the turnout was also the lowest since 2001, demonstrating the wide dissatisfaction felt by the British populace. The Labour government, led by newly elected Prime Minister Keir Starmer, promises a mission-driven government, focusing particularly on boosting the economy, green energy provision, greater investment in childcare and improving the education system and the NHS.

Across the English Channel, French voters made a dramatic statement in Macron’s snap parliamentary election in early July 2024. Turning away from both the far right and the politically centrist parties, the electorate delivered a surprising result, awarding a record number of seats to the New Popular Front alliance of left-wing parties, surpassing both Le Pen’s National Rally and the presidential camp.

It is most likely that the success of the far right shall depend on their continued ability to convince their electorates on their capacity to govern. The case of Italy can provide further insights on how a far-right led government handles governance. Ultimately, the resilience of democratic institutions in each European country shall play the determining role in keeping in check far right movements and governments.

Finally, what does this trend entail for the future of the European continent, and especially for the union which ties many of its national counterparts?

The current political dynamics in Europe directly reflect frustration with ineffective policies which have contributed to a high degree of socioeconomic instability across the entire continent. For the EU in particular, this means that its future depends on its ability to tackle this as efficiently as possible, despite the challenges that threaten its long-standing institutions.
