In this digital age the significance of film education has become much more relevant than ever before. It is no secret that our children, our youth spend countless hours on social media through various platforms. In all of segments of society, probably they are the biggest audience of the digital world.

Two questions come to mind. Are we equpping them with the necessary skills to comprehend and analyze the messages conveyed through the aforementioned mediums? Can we depart from the mentality that our children’s future career is solely dependent on the traditional careers we have today?

Film education can be the next big thing in our education system. The power of film encompasses the ability to understand and appreciate the storytelling techniques, culture contexts and artistry. Therefore let us see film education as a way to further enhance creativity, critical thinking and media literacy skills.

This is why we will work on intregrating film education into our educational curriculum at all levels. From primary, secondary up until the education ladder.

This is an idea that will be a integral part in Malta’s film strategy tilll 2030. Let us look at the eventuality of teaching film studies into our literature and humanities programmes. Let us introduce more film production courses. Signficantly let’s establish partnerships with industry professionals to provide hands-on experience to aspiring filmmakers.

On the same platform we must also look closely on the emergence of new technologies and digital platforms as avenues for film education to ensure that future film students are prepared for the ever-changing scenario in the filmmaking world.

By integrating it into our schools and empowering it at University level, we can seriously develop a generation that is much more informed, critical in its thinking and skilled in the realm of film making.

Therefore let us embrace the power of film to educate, inspire and shape the minds of our future generations.

Open Day at Villa Frere

Villa Frere was created by British diplomat, poet, scholar, and philanthropist John Hookham Frere, after the demise of his wife in 1831, as a means of comfort for his sadness. From this garden, which enjoyed wide-open views spanning from Mdina to Valletta, he could also look out at the Msida Bastion Cemetery, where his wife reposed. Villa Frere became a sanctuary for numerous academics, most famously Mikiel Anton Vassalli who reportedly discussed with Frere how to establish Maltese as a written and taught language. Catacombs Monthly Opening

Ta’ Bistra Catacombs will be welcoming the general public every last Sunday of the month. Located half way between the ancient town of Melite and the once-important harbour of Salina, Ta’ Bistra Catacombs are, so far, the largest set of tombs and catacombs beyond the confines of the ancient city of the island. They were first recorded in the late 1800s but were only investigated in 1933 by Captain Charles Zammit, before part of the site was covered over by a new road leading down to Burmarrad. Beyond Flying

TAKING A LOOK AT THE BIG NAMES IN MALTA THIS YEAR

It comes as no surprise that Malta has had its fair share (and continues to do so) in being in front of the camera and making its way onto global screens thanks to the many blockbusters it has provided its scenery to. The music industry is also thriving in Malta as the Maltese people can expect to see an impressive number of internationally renowned artists making their way over to share their talents.

Both the film industry and music industry are booming in Malta and 2023 is still yet to see them slow down (and at the moment, there is no sign of stopping). We take a look at several industry big names who have either already visited the island or are still yet to do so in 2023.

Gladiator 2 is currently filming in Malta and has seen the names of Russell Crowe, Pedro Pascal and Paul Mescal (with more surely to be spotted soon) around the island. Mean Girls star Lacey Chabert was also seen in Malta in March after filming her new film, The Dancing Detective: A Deadly Tango.

Simu Liu was also spotted in Malta after announcing that he was shooting his newest film, The Last Breath on the island. He is best known for his roles in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the 10 Rings and the new upcoming Barbie movie.

The Mediterrane Film Festival is also

welcoming plenty of well-known names and faces. We can expect to see Australian actor Eric Bana, British comedian and actor David Walliams, Annabelle Wallis who is best known for her role on Peaky Blinders and Jared Harris known for his role in Mad Men.

The film industry isn’t the only sector that is thriving in Malta – the music industry is also gearing up to have Malta host and welcome several artists. Music festival ‘Summer Daze’ is looking forward to welcoming big names such as The Black Eyed Peas, Zara Larson, Farruko and more.

Rock icon Robbie Williams will also be appearing in August for his own concert which is expected to have an incredible turnout.

Isle of MTV is set to have OneRepublic perform who are known for their smash hits ‘Counting Stars’, ‘Apologise’ and ‘I Ain’t Worried’.

British artist Tom Grennan has also been announced as a performer. Grennan’s most known songs include ‘Little Bit of Love’, ‘By Your Side’ which was produced by DJ Calvin Harris, ‘Not Over Yet’, which is KSI’s song featuring Grennan and ‘All These Nights’.

The Għasri Valley, Gozo

Għasri Valley offers an idyllic setting for a leisurely country walk or a refreshing bike ride. Assassin’s Creed: Valletta (and its many rooftops), Fort Ricasoli, Basilica of St Dominic

Based on the wildly successful video game, with the same name, Assassin’s Creed was filmed at the famous Fort Ricasoli. Malta (and Fort Ricasoli specifically), was chosen as a scenic choice for the film due to its medieval look and feel which aims to transport the audience way back in time.

A large number of fighting/combat scenes were shot in Valletta too, to help bring the image of 15th Century Spain to life. The major fight scene in the film took place on the roof of the Basilica of St Dominic.

Whilst watching the film, try to see where the scenes were shot around Malta to help get an idea of the approximate locations of Valletta.

Malta over the last 30 – 40 years has been in a wide array of films, offering its stunning scenery and culture to the film industry. It comes as no surprise that Malta has also been selected to lend its environment to a number of movies thanks to its rich history and landmark buildings. With so much history both in terms of culture and the film industry, we take a look at the most iconic backdrops Malta has provided for some of the biggest films and productions.

Popeye: Popeye Village, Mellieħa

Perhaps one of the most iconic films to be shot on the island, Popeye, starring Robin Williams, had its own entire set on the island which served as the main setting for the film.

The set is still available to this day and is located in Anchor Bay Mellieħa where visitors can go and visit with family and friends. Be immersed in the brightly coloured buildings and small houses that once upon a time served as an actual community (for Popeye of course).

The area has been revamped to offer its services as an amusement park offering plenty of different sights and activities. The attraction offers cocktails, snacks, a cinema room – allowing you to sit back and take a trip down memory lane by watching a documentary of the filming process of Popeye, a splash pool, a bar and restaurant and a main square where welcoming shows take place.

Gladiator: Fort Ricasoli

A very fitting time to include Gladiator as its sequel Gladiator 2 is currently being filmed in Malta. Of course, the famous Fort Ricasoli was used to replicate Ancient Rome and the fighting area.

Gladiator spent 19 weeks filming at Fort Ricasoli and obviously seemed to prove itself worthy enough as Gladiator 2 is making its comeback to once again, shoot in Malta.

EXPLORING THE TIMELESS LEGACY OF MALTESE FEAST CELEBRATIONS

One major tradition close to every local's heart is the celebration of a village feast. The festa season in Malta starts from the end of May right through the entire summer. During this period, there is hardly any weekend when a town or a village is not celebrating the feast of its patron saint or other saints revered in different churches

Feasts have been a part of Maltese culture since the Knights of St. John's rule, specifically under Grandmaster De Rohan, from 1775 until 1797. Malta, a largely Catholic country, values its cultural and religious traditions, and the feasts have assimilated into everyday life. The Maltese Islands host over 80 town feasts, 60 of which are hosted in Malta and 20 in Gozo, showcasing the country's unwavering

loyalty to its guests and the happy moments they inspire.

The feasts were first established as a way to show gratitude to the gods for their blessings. However, over time they evolved into colourful, valued cultural events that the community enthusiastically looked forward to.

a glimpse into the long heritage of the nation. The towns of Malta contain several parish churches, many of which have multiple feast days. Some communities even celebrate the same occasion, as is the case with the well-known Santa Maria feast, which is celebrated on August 15 across seven distinct locations in Malta. With a few exceptions, the bulk of feasts in Malta take place between May and September.

Travelling to Malta in the summer is a terrific opportunity to experience these feasts firsthand. In Malta, a feast often includes fireworks displays, marching bands, and regional specialties. The main focus of Malta's feasts has always been religious festivals since their origin. These events are incredibly significant because they give locals and visitors a place to get together and have fun. The colossal scale of the celebrations in Malta makes each feast unique and unforgettable.

Celebrations frequently begin up to two weeks before the actual feast day. Events like band marches are arranged at this period and a huge procession frequently takes place the night or few days prior to the main event. Typically, the night before or on the day of the feast, the Catherine Wheels fireworks display is held. In the town square and the area of the church, vibrant decorations, holy items, damask tapestries, and intricate patterns praise the patron and emphasise the significance of craftsmanship as a form of cultural expression. Since the majority of these

decorations are handmade, planning for them frequently takes a whole year.

A morning procession is usually held on the actual feast day, followed by fun activities all day long. In the evening, the congregation conducts a procession while carrying the patron's statue. Notably, there is a unique custom in Mgarr, Malta, where bidders will pay a substantial sum of

money to have the statue removed from the church and prominently displayed in the town centre.

The food vendors, who provide a range of delicious meals, are given a lot of attention in the feast's framework. Traditional fare and well-known street snacks like sausages and sugar floss are served during the feasts in Malta, which offer a range of meals to suit every appetite. Anyone with a sweet tooth must indulge in "imqaret," delicious pan-fried date cakes, and nougat from quaint wooden kiosks with vintage weighing scales.

Marsalforn is a charming coastal village situated on the north coast of the idyllic island of Gozo. Marsalforn has grown to be a well-liked vacation spot for travellers looking for leisure, adventure, and a taste of conventional Maltese culture. It is known for its breathtaking natural beauty, crystal-clear waters, and compelling beachside ambience. Marsalforn provides tourists of all ages an unforgettable experience with its rich history, magnificent surroundings, and wealth of leisure activities. Marsalforn, which is located in a lovely harbour, has a crescent-shaped shoreline that is lined by imposing cliffs, pebbly and sand beaches, and rough

limestone rock formations. The settlement is encircled by undulating hills and lush landscape, which creates a tranquil setting for the azure Mediterranean Sea. From the quaint harbor, visitors can witness breathtaking sunsets and enjoy panoramic views of the nearby islands of Comino and Malta.

The historic salt pans, which can be seen on Gozo's northern shore just past Marsalforn, have long been an important element of the island's culture. The Phoenicians and Romans are two ancient civilisations who first used evaporation to produce salt. The salt pans serve as a reminder of the island's long-standing practise of salt gathering, a trade that has been handed down through the centuries. These pans are made up of a network of small pools where saltwater is gathered and allowed to evaporate, causing salt to crystallise.

The salt pans are a priceless cultural and historical asset because of the labor-intensive procedure and special environmental requirements needed for salt manufacturing. The salt pans still exist today and carry on this age-old tradition by producing high-quality, artisanal salt. The salt pans in Gozo and Marsalforn are evidence of the island's reliance on its natural resources and the ongoing heritage

of its traditional industries. They preserve a centuries-old commerce and serve as a constant reminder of the region's historical importance for the manufacturing of salt.

A number of beautiful beaches are also available in Marsalforn, including the well-known Marsalforn Bay, which has a sandy beach ideal for swimming and sunbathing. Water sports fans may participate in a number of activities including kayaking, scuba diving, and snorkelling to explore the fascinating underwater environment filled with marine life.

Coastal Walks and hiking trails are also ideal in Marsalforn. THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN MARSALFORN

XWEJNI & QBAJJAR BAY

Xwejni Bay and Qbajjar Bay are two neighboring shallow bays that can be easily accessed from Marsalforn. These bays feature small pebbly beaches and rocky areas that gradually lead into pristine, transparent blue waters. The excellent swimming opportunities offered here are enjoyed by both locals and visitors alike. Additionally, because of its tranquil seas and accessible marine life, the region is a well-liked location for diving, especially among beginners.

GĦAR QAWQLA

The limestone formation of Għar Qawqla was once a natural arch that connected to the mainland. However, during the 20th century, the arch collapsed, leaving behind a 3-meter-tall pillar as its only remnants. It has been suggested that the name Marsalforn may have been influenced by the presence of natural sea caves in the area, including the well-known Għar Qawqla. Standing approximately 7.9 meters (26 ft) away from the shore, Għar Qawqla serves as a popular spot for both locals and tourists to leap into the sea. Adjacent to the formation, there is also a shallow natural pool for visitors to enjoy.

XWEJNI SALT PANS

The Saltpans are a compelling landmark with important economic and historical significance. These saltpans are crucial for maintaining an antiquated trade and expertise while collecting salt, one of Gozo's priceless natural resources. Since the ages of the Phoenicians and Romans, the process of artisan salt production through evaporation has been practiced in Gozo, demonstrating its long-lasting heritage. The act of gathering salt was revived in Gozo under the British rule when the government granted local people privileges that allowed them to labour in and share ownership of the saltpans.

TAKE ON THE ‘TA’ ĠURDAN’ WALK THROUGH WIED IL-GĦASRI

The well-known path by locals and tourists alike display the untamed shoreline of Gozo's natural beauty. Hikers may go along this lovely path as it takes them through the Wied il-Għasri valley and to the quaint settlement of Ta' Ġurdan. The walk's spectacular backdrop of rich foliage and rough terrain offers many opportunity to fully immerse oneself in Gozo's natural settings. Hikers will be treated to breathtaking views of the turquoise Mediterranean Sea and the untamed coastal cliffs as they pass through the valley. The walk provides a distinctive view of the island's natural features thanks to the tall limestone cliffs and rock formations that line the path.

CULTIVATING A VARIETY OF HERBS AT RENNY'S HYDROPONIC GREENHOUSE

One of my favourite parts about getting to write this column is that I get to discover the best-kept secrets that only the locals know about. Local restaurant owners, bakers, and chefs have the inside scoop on where to get the freshest and purest ingredients and I am here to introduce you to one of the best there is! Tucked away on the south side of the island in Iż-Żejtun is a treasure trove of hydroponically grown lettuces, micro plants, edible flowers, fresh herbs and more at Renny’s Herbs and Salads.

Meet Renny Desira and his wife Nina. Renny built his first hydroponic greenhouse in 1992 by hand. Since then, his greenhouses have expanded and he now has several areas both inside and outside which grow indescribably delicious fresh salads and herbs. He is known to bakers for his fresh, edible flowers that lend a sweet and crisp component to the desserts. He is known to chefs for edible flowers that are not for baking but for more savoury dishes and we even got to taste flowers that taste like garlic and onions! He knows which flowers to pack for which chefs and has rows upon rows packed up each morning ready to be picked up and served that day. He said

that many chefs will text him the night before and by early morning, Renny has packed their orders and is ready for pick up. What you are eating at these particular dining places in terms of herbs, salads and edible flowers are top-notch and harvested that same day if they came from Renny’s.

I learned about Rennys hydroponic farm from Sue, owner of the Happy Baker in San Ġwann. I continue to order fresh cakes from Sue for all of our celebrations, and it was because of a certain fresh ricotta and pear cheesecake decorated with the most vibrant and beautiful violet flowers that led me to meet Renny in the first place! When we went to Renny’s farm, he was so careful with everyone’s order keeping them out of the sun and in the bestshaded areas before they could come and collect their orders.

He handled every flower and herb with such care. Excitedly, he took us through the many areas in his greenhouse where we got to taste micro basil, fresh flowers of all sorts of

flavours and many different varieties of lettuce and fresh vegetables.

He turned the water on for us and we were able to understand better the hydroponic aspect of their growth. No soil to turn, just fresh, clean water. Under each individual head of lettuce and herbs, they are held in a tiny single pot and the roots grow out of the bottom and reach the water. It was such an incredible sight to see!

JULY RESTAURANT GUIDE

There are so many restaurants in Malta to choose from. It can be hard to figure out which one to choose for what your mood and pocketbook might prefer.I will give you my top 5 picks for easy dining with not-too-expensive menus. Not everything has to be a fancy night out. Instead, this is more of my favourite go-to guide for an incredible daytime (or nighttime) experience that can be very laid back with a great menu, steady and solid serving staff and really fantastic views to enjoy your meal.

CRUDO

We stumbled upon this sweet little café recently and I have been craving their focaccia with grilled halloumi, tomato herb dressing and balsamic vinegar every day since…seriously. It had the slightest drizzle of honey and the bread was so soft and so warm it was easy to tell it was made fresh that morning. My husband ordered the focaccia with mozzarella, avocado, basil and tomato which was equally fresh, warm and delicious. To drink, I saw a woman behind us order something that looked fantastic and so I asked my waitress what it was. She said it was the fresh cacao with iced coffee. I said, “I’ll have what she’s having!” It was the most scrumptious coffee drink I have honestly ever had! Now, all I can think about is going back for exactly the same focaccia sandwich and iced coffee with fresh cacao! It’s a small place with limited seating, but it’s worth it and the seats are outside. It really brings the sweet, café experience alive and comes with a view of Balluta bay just on the other side of the road. This is the quintessential café dining at its best. I highly recommend taking a visit here if you are in the area.

It is in such a sweet location overlooking the sea. The menu is not overwhelming and is filled with really great items. The back of the restaurant is right over the water with the most breathtaking views of the sea and in range for the perfect blend of crosswinds to truly feel the Mediterranean experience of salt and sea all around you. The afternoon menu opens up to a lot of really great local seafood. The brunch menu serves eggs any style, different options such as eggs benedict (my forever favourite), eggs benedict with different variations, egg sandwiches, traditional BLT sandwiches and other signature brunch items that will meet the standards of any true breakfast food lover. Whether you decide to go to this perfect location on the water’s edge in Sliema for breakfast, lunch or dinner, Peppi’s is a really great choice.

This sweet little café sits facing the main road, but can be found on the side of the parking lot in Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq just past the water park. A friend of mine turned me on to this place, and now it has become a staple for me to bring people to if we want a place that offers quiet and wonderful outside seating, really nice quality coffee and some of the best sweet and savoury items around this is an easy choice. Their croissants are the largest and softest I’ve found. They can fill it with pistachio cream, Nutella, white chocolate or plain. They also have waffles with savoury meats or sweet treats. And if you are not feeling the breakfast vibe, they also have several offerings with tuna, veggie or chicken as well as other typical Mediterranean café items. There is a huge gelato counter with an assortment of incredible flavours. I eat here often for the combination of ambience and menu items. On the other end of the parking is a sweet little sandy beach area where you can take off your shoes and dip into the water.

Situated along the promenade just across from one of the best sandy beaches on the island is a quaint little café that happens to have the best salad I have had on the entire island. I know, those are big words right there to call this the best salad of all, but trust me, if you want a real Mediterranean salad…this is the one. Their other salads are also fantastic, but the Mediterranean salad won me over. And coming from a day at the beach, this crisp, cool salad with all the best trimmings will satisfy your Mediterraneanloving soul! The Mediterranean salad comes with lettuce, sundried cherry tomatoes, goat cheese, bigilla, butter beans, water biscuits and Maltese sausage. To be fair, if you are not hankering for a crisp salad, the pizzas are incredible and even the kids loved the food here. It is the perfect spot for a beach day pick-me-up.

73, Il-Bajja s-Sabiħa, Birzebbugia

The best view of any restaurant is hands down, La Nave in St. Pauls Bay just beside the Malta Aquarium. This is the place I used to bring all of my visitors first to really get a feel for the vacation they were dreaming of. You can sit inside with spectacular views, or you can sit right by the water with views, winds, and smells that will make you feel fully alive and in heaven at the same time. This is a place we tend to go to for breakfast just before we would visit the aquarium, so my knowledge is more from a brunch perspective. The kids love the stacks of pancakes filled with messes of chocolate and drizzled with all sorts of goodness. Their smoothies are radiant and fresh. The coffee is always on point and the wait staff is very good. They offer a large menu with many different options to satisfy any guest. Most of all, I offer this place because the view is simply too spectacular to miss. You can see a panoramic of Gozo, Comino and St. Pauls Islands. It’s a place not to be missed.
