REMEMBERING SETTE GIUGNO Sette Giugno is a Maltese national holiday that takes place annually on 7 June. This holiday is in dedicatory of an uprising against the colonial government and the unprecedented overcharging merchants. What many might suggest as the first step towards national Independence, Sette Giugno was mainly initiated due to the extortionate living costs post-war and the political developments transpiring at the time. The then Maltese colonial government was not providing a sufficient supply of basic food provisions for the islands, causing food to become scarce and prices to skyrocket. Adding insult to injury, the dockyard workers were not getting a sufficient pay wage to keep up with the increase in the cost of living. The dockyard workers formed a union in 1916, organising their first strike for a 10% pay increase a year later. The rapid increase in the cost of living eventually caused riots a couple of years later in 1919, when the Maltese citizens revolted against the British administration. The Maltese workers called for some form of representative government stipulated for the island. This devastating event caused a ripple effect, with the British soldiers firing at the rioting crowd in Old Bakery Street, resulting in the death of six people, with many others fatally injured. The holiday is nationally referred to as ‘Sette Guigno’, an Italian phrase which translates to ‘7 June’. Back in World War I, Italian was still the dominant language in Malta. The language was utilised everywhere; in public life, with friends, and it was also the language used in the education sector. While some were resistant to change, this gradually shifted with the British colony overtaking Malta for over 150 years, hence Malta’s current British overtones in laws, education, and business. However, since this is a pivotal historical event of incredible national importance, the name ‘Sette Guigno’ remains till this day. A monument was inaugurated on 7 June 1986, featuring six men with bare torsos, with two men audaciously holding the Maltese flag, signifying their unwavering patriotism and courage. OH MY MALTA

THE XPRUNARA Developed from the brigantine (another sailing vessel) in the 16th century, the Xprunara was a merchant craft, ferrying goods between Malta and Sicily. These twelve hour rides carried grain, corn, and livestock. The xprunara has inspired various other boats, such as the the Gozo boat, and the ‘dgħajsa tal-latini’ (the boat of the Latins). These type of boats became obsolete in the 20th century due to ever-changing technology.

LUZZU Derived from the Sicilian word ‘guzzu’, a luzzu is a traditional fishing boat originating during the early 20th century. Similar to the 17th-century ‘ferilla’, the carvel-built boat is particularly popular in the fishing village of Marsaxlokk. The boats’ emblematic colours are the shades of yellow, red, green, and blue. These vibrant colours are accompanied by the eyes of Horus. These eyes are placed on the boat to protect the fishermen while at sea. Nowadays, the luzzu has become an iconic Maltese symbol, often commercialised into items such as magnets, towels, shirts, and also benches.

THE FIRILLA Popular in the late 19th century amongst local fishermen and fellow passengers, the firilla is noted to be one of the earliest types of fishing boats in Malta. The firilla was originally a passenger boat between Senglea and Vittoriosa. While the firilla is not as popular is it was a century ago, other boats such as the dgħajsa have taken similar design elements, with a double ended, carvel built boat with a straight keel.

THE DGĦAJSA While ‘dgħajsa’ is a general term in the Maltese language to refer to any type of boat, the word is also employed to refer to the traditional Maltese water taxi. Popularised in the 17th century, the dgħajsa were used by workmen for takings goods and sometimes passengers in the Grand and Marsamxett Harbour. While they are not as popular as they once were back in the day, you might still catch some boats operating around the island’s harbours.

THE FREJGATINA Replacing the Ferilla in 1935, the Frejgatina is a small open fishing boat with an inboard engine at the back, yet formerly rowed with two oars. In the 21st century, the Frejgatina is often used by fishermen as a travelling vessel, ferrying them from the shore to their own fishing boat. However, there are some bigger Frejgatini which are still used for recreation purposes.

A SITE FOR THE WAR BUFFS A stop in the island’s capital Valletta is sure to top every visitor’s itinerary. But do not limit your city tour to attractions that are found above the ground, for underground Valletta, which is a maze of passageways and chambers dating to the Knights of St John and later used by the British during the war, is equally worthy of

discovery. You can take a journey back in time to the early 1940s, when Malta was the most heavily bombed place on earth, with a visit to the recently restored Combined Operations Room and sprawling underground war headquarters found deep beneath the Upper Barakka Gardens in Valletta. War and history buffs are sure to recognise the names of top military figures of the Second World War; the likes of Vice-Marshals Hugh Pugh Lloyd and Keith Park,

both of whom directed strategic operations from these headquarters.

A SITE FOR ARCHAEOLOGY APPRECIATORS The Museum of Archaeology, which is located on Valletta’s principal street, is another attraction that merits a visit, particularly if you’re interested in Malta’s prehistory and early history. The museum, which was constructed in 1571 and served as the official residence of the Knights of St John who originated from Provence, is presently housing the temporary Phoenician shipwreck exhibition alongside other permanent exhibits. This exhibition showcases several extremely well-preserved artefacts that were retrieved from a shipwreck which dates to the first part of the 7th B.C., and which was

One of the artefacts that were retrieved from the Phoenician Shipwreck

discovered in 2007 just off Xlendi Bay in Gozo. Adding further value to the artefacts on display is the depth at the which they were found; namely 110 metres below sea level, necessitating technical divers and experts from across the globe to come together to excavate the shipwreck site over a period of five years! Tip: Combine your visit to the Archaeology Museum with an Underground Valletta tour, which starts here on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Sundays.

A SITE FOR THE SCENERY SEEKERS If you love beautiful scenery more than museums and the bustling city life, do head down to the spectacular Wied iż-Żurrieq. The drive or walk down to Wied iż-Żurrieq in the south-west of Malta is breathtakingly beautiful, particularly when the setting sun paints

the sky in fiery hues. Proudly guarding Wied iż-Żurrieq is Ta’ Xutu watchtower, which was built by Grand Master Lascaris in the 17th century as part of the islands’ defence system. From atop the tower, which is one of 27 remaining watchtowers dotting the island’s coast, one can get a panoramic view of Wied iż-Żurrieq and the surrounding cliffs, as well as glimpse the inaccessible islet of Filfla, which bobs solitarily just across from Ta’ Xutu. Tip: Combine your visit to Wied iż-Żurrieq with a visit to the UNESCO-listed temple of Ħaġar Qim, which is located in the vicinity.

SLIE EXPLORING

MA by Terrence Mifsud

Located on the northeast coast of Malta in the Northern Harbour District, Sliema is a vibrant seaside town with a population of over 20,000. Sliema obtained its name from a church built in 1855, which assisted local fishermen, since it served as a reference point. Furthermore, Our Lady of the Sea (or Stella Maris) is the matrice among other parish churches in Sliema. The name of the coastal town originated from the opening words of the Hail Mary prayer, denoting peace and serenity, in Maltese ‘Sliem Għalik Marija’. The term ‘Sliema’ was also once used as an informal salute. Prior to the Great Siege of 1565, Sliema was used as a campo centre, inhabited by Turkish troops called ‘il-Qortin’. The Turkish corsair ‘Dragut’, faced death at the tip of Sliema, after being killed by a mutilating bombardment from Fort St Elmo. The exact location where the leader of the Turkish troops died is now famously referred to as the ‘Dragut Point’, which is where the polygonal Fort Tigné currently stands. This limestone fort was built by the Order of Saint John around the end of the 18th century to safeguard the entrance to Marsamxett Harbour. Sliema began to gradually evolve into the popular resort that it is today in the latter part of the 19th century, after attracting a multitude of affluent Valletta residents to visit the coastal town in Malta’s canicular days. These wealthy entrepreneurs and businesspersons built Victorian-style Houses, lining the inland streets and the three-kilometre sea promenade. While only a handful still remain since they have been replaced by modern architectural-style villas and apartments, some traditional Victorian houses still remain, accentuating the classical beauty of Sliema. Nowadays, Sliema is a nirvana for shopping, dining, and nightlife enthusiasts as it has become Malta’s major commercial town due to its vast array of nightclubs, restaurants, and shopping centres. This is a drastic juxtaposition with Sliema’s traditional roots, as it was once a quaint fishing village. Sliema’s promontory offers a panoramic view across Valletta and the soothing view of the open sea. This bustling town is a must-see location for both tourists and locals, housing an array of endeavours to please every kind of person, with an appeasing atmosphere accompanying it!

This month's food of choice is peaches! Flat peaches, to be more specific. I hail from Atlanta, Georgia of the United States. In every state, there’s a specific food or concept that the state is known for and named after. Every license plate of every car has their specific state emblem and colours on them and 50 different coins have a specific logo, representing varying states on the back side. In Georgia, on every car you will find a giant peach sitting just behind the license plate numbers. Below the numbers read the words: “The Peach State”. That’s what Georgia is: The Peach State. Everything in Georgia is peach… the state coin, the streets, the logos and whatever else you can think of comes with something peach. Peaches grow all over the state and flood the local stores when Springtime arrives. The peaches were orange with a hint of red and a good amount of fuzz on the skins. Whenever I saw the sign for those juicy white peaches, I would buy as many as I could. The way that they tasted is beyond any regular peach. They were sweeter, more pure and only grown on a few farms. You could somehow tell that these farmers had love in their hands and the food reflected it year after year. We would pick up each peach and squeeze it and push our thumbs into the skin to see how quickly the fruit would indent, to let us know if it was ripe or not. Every year, when spring and summer would converge and the outside temperature was hot enough to make the peaches ripe and pretty, I would begin to scour the store’s organic section for my very favorite kind of peach; the sacred Georgia white peach. Those are much harder to find and only seem to make an appearance for just a few weeks before they’re gone again for another year.

GUESS WHAT BLOWS MY LITTLE GEORGIA WHITE PEACHES RIGHT OUT OF THE WATER? The Maltese Flat Peach, that’s what! Those little odd-shaped peaches happen to be the most succulent, delicious little pieces of heaven I have ever tasted. When we first moved to the island, our friends came over and brought a container of local flat peaches. It was summertime and they were perfectly ripe. I almost didn’t try one because they seemed so oddly shaped and to be honest, I might have been a little bit of a peach snob coming from Georgia. I had a certain expectation of what a peach should look and taste like.

Once I picked up one of those little round flat peaches and put it in my mouth, something extraordinary happened. It was like a party in my mouth! Never had I tasted a peach with the flavour and sweetness of this little peach. We began to buy containers of peaches at every grocery shop we found them in, but it was soon autumn and they went away quickly. We didn’t arrive in Malta until mid-August, so the time we had to enjoy those beautiful peaches was limited and short-lived. Now, my little friends are back. Don’t think for a single minute that we didn’t notice it! Anyone who is a fan of peaches and tries these local flat peaches, always seems to have a similar reaction. Soon enough, the peaches will be out everywhere that fruits are sold and everyone will be rushing to the stores or the local produce trucks to grab them before they are gone – and who can blame them?

MEETING AARON CAMILLERI AT TA’ SALUT We had the distinct pleasure of visiting Mġarr and a specific farm nicknamed Ta’ Salut. We met with local farmer Aaron Camilleri, who was kind enough to take us to see his farm and rows of flat peach trees. They were magnificent! Interestingly, the peaches grow in rows all along the branches. They are either lined up in a row or in a large cluster on the trees. All of the peaches face the same direction. Aaron referred to it as ‘her face’. Her face always looks to the sun. He also showed us how to hold the peach so that the face is looking up and the backside is down on the palm of the hand, showing off her most beautiful side. Aaron also added that there is one secret to farming and that is “to let it ripen.” He said that is what they say over and over again when choosing which fruits to pick and pack: let it ripen. Don’t offer it before it’s time. As far as the flat peach trees go, the trees themselves originate from Italy and have been growing here in Malta for a little over 15 years. He said they are very easy to grow once they are established. There is a little test you can do with the peach to see if it is ripe. Rub your thumb along the fuzzy skin. If the skin breaks without the use of a knife and sticks to your thumb, it is perfectly ripe. If you can rub your thumb up and down along the peach and it stay perfectly in place, this is a good sign that you should wait a little more.

RECIPE: ROASTED PORK LOIN STUFFED WITH PEACHES AND THYME S e a n G ra vin a ma ke s a ro a s t e d p o r k lo in s t uf f e d wi th p e a c h e s a nd t h y me a n d s e r ve d w it h p o t a t o e s roasted i n g o o s e f a t a nd c r is py c ra c k lin g

INGREDIENTS Seven-rib loin of pork 1 bunch fresh thyme 200g Butter Salt and pepper

8 fresh peaches, halved and stoned 8 medium potatoes 1 jar goose fat

METHOD 1.Pre-heat the oven to 220°C. 2.Score the skin of the pork in a criss-cross pattern about 1cm apart, through the fat, nearly through the meat. 3.With a knife, carefully part the meat away from the ribs. 4.Scrunch up the chopped thyme into the butter and season. 5.Rub and distribute a little of the butter into the gap you have made between the ribs and the meat. 6.Peel the peaches and dice. Stuff as many peaches as will fit into the meat, and finish with another layer of butter. 7.Tie the pork with butcher’s string so that the filling remains in tact. 8.Par-boil the potatoes. 9.Place the goose fat in a roasting tray and put in the oven to heat for approx. 5 mins. 10.Slice the potatoes and place in centre of the roasting tray with the hot goose fat, to form a pivot. 11.Slice the remaining peaches and add to the potatoes. 13.Place the stuffed pork loin on top of the potatoes and peaches. 14.Roast in a hot oven for 50 – 70 mins until the meat is tender.

34 OH MY MALTA

15.Allow the pork roast to rest for at least 10 mins before carving.
