hese were the 4th Annual Awards for the Texas region and the organizations and individuals in this journal were acknowledged by the award’s judging panel to have excelled in their work in 2015, whilst also focusing on the industry core values of Health & Safety, Environmental Stewardship and Corporate Social Responsibility. The Oil & Gas Awards champion best practice and recognize organizations operating in the upstream, midstream and downstream sectors of the industry. The media and members of the general public do not distinguish between the different sectors of the industry, which is why the Awards incorporate categories for all parts of the upstream, midstream and downstream sectors. The absent mindedness of an individual on an assembly line can have dramatic consequences months later should equipment fail when being used in the field. This reflects badly on the industry as a whole, we therefore think it is extremely important that best practice is championed from top to bottom and the Awards are a platform to promote to the press and public the great work being done. The Oil & Gas Awards are unique in highlighting the incredible innovation and commitment to positive industry development and expansion, rebutting traditionally negative mainstream coverage. The Awards celebrate corporate success twinned with organization’s commitment to health & safety, environmental stewardship and corporate social responsibility.
In this 4th year for the Awards in this region we had the 3rd Industry Summit during the day immediately before the Awards gala dinner in the evening. Chairman David Porter Texas Railroad Commission Chairman David Porter was elected statewide by the people of Texas in November 2010 to serve a six-year term as Railroad Commissioner and was unanimously elected by his fellow commissioners to serve as Chairman in June 2015. Since taking office, Chairman Porter has been appointed to the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission as the Official Representative of Texas and served as Vice Chairman of the organization in 2016. He is an advisory board member for the Texas Journal of Oil, Gas, and Energy Law. He also served as the Official Representative on the Interstate Mining Compact Commission from 2011 to 2014. In 2011, Porter created the Eagle Ford Shale Task Force, the first of its kind at the Texas Railroad Commission, to establish a forum that brings the community together to

foster a productive and forward-looking dialogue regarding drilling activities in the Eagle Ford Shale. In 2013, Porter launched his Texas Natural Gas Initiative: a series of statewide events that bring stakeholders together to discuss business opportunities, challenges and regulatory barriers and solutions for natural gas conversion and infrastructure – focusing largely on the transportation and exploration and production sectors. In recognition of his foresight and leadership, Porter was named “Man of the Year” by The Oil & Gas Year, Eagle Ford, Texas 2013. He has also been recognized by Shale Oil & Gas Business Magazine and Unconventional Oil & Gas Magazine for his proactive efforts. Before taking office, Porter built a successful small business around his CPA practice in Midland Texas, providing accounting and tax services to oil and gas producers, royalty owners, oil field service companies, and other small businesses and individuals.

Christopher Guith - U.S. Chamber of Commerce Christopher Guith is senior vice president for policy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for 21st Century Energy (Energy Institute). He is responsible for developing the Institute’s policies and initiatives as they apply to the legislative, executive, and regulatory branches of the federal and state governments. Specifically, Guith leads the development of the Energy Institute’s policies and messaging relating to oil and natural gas and nuclear energy. He led the Chamber’s Shale Works for US campaign, which analyzed and promoted the widespread benefits of shale energy development in America. Guith offers expertise on an array of energy and environmental issues. He educates policymakers, businesses, energy stakeholders, coalitions, and the public about the importance of a diversified energy portfolio and how it can
ensure an efficient, reliable, prosperous, and secure energy future. He also leverages his broad energy expertise as a spokesperson with local, state, and national media. Prior to joining the Chamber in 2008, Guith served as deputy assistant secretary for nuclear energy at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), where he developed the administration’s nuclear energy policies and coordinated the department’s interactions with Congress, stakeholders, and the media. He was also deputy assistant secretary for congressional affairs at DOE and a chief representative of the administration during the drafting and debate of the Energy Policy Act of 2005. Earlier in his career, Guith served as Rep. Bob Barr’s (R-GA) legislative director and Rep. Tim Murphy’s (R-PA) counsel and policy adviser. He was also legislative counsel for the Environment, Technology & Regulatory Affairs at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Guith is a graduate of Syracuse University-College of Law and the University of California-Santa Barbara.

Keynote Presentation
Staying ahead of the curve – the importance of investing in research and development.
Tom Williams believes in the collective power of oil and gas companies and has seen firsthand the amazing things when the industry comes together to tackle R&D challenges head on. What he still doesn’t understand as President of the Research Partnership to Secure Energy for America (RPSEA) is why it takes major events that shake the industry to its core to force companies to collaborate on solutions that benefit all stakeholders. “Once they get involved in the process, and one of their experts are sitting at the table, they see a very fast uptake,” Williams said during his keynote presentation. “The industry did not have a really good history of cooperating on safety, and now they do. They didn’t have a culture generally of working on environmental technology, and now they do.” With the vast resources supporting RPSEA, there’s no reason oil and gas companies shouldn’t collaborate under the organization’s guidance. When the Energy Policy Act of 2005 was passed, the Ultra-Deepwater and Unconventional Natural Gas and Other Petroleum Resources Research and Development Program was established. Under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory, RPSEA was selected to manage the 10-year, $375 million program designed to enable development of new technologies necessary to produce more secure, abundant and affordable domestic energy supplies. Since its launch, RPSEA has played a huge role in advancing collaborative research in shale plays and ultra-deepwater (UDW) exploration. For its (UDW) program, RPSEA was charged with extending exploration to a water depth equal to or greater than 5,000 feet. By compiling 950 subject experts and relying on lessons from previous consortiums like DeepStar Technology Development, Williams said RPSEA funded about $200 million

worth of R&D that has led to the safe and reliable production of oil and gas at depths as far as 10,000 feet into the water. “When RPSEA was formed, there was a lot of that technology areas that were really high risk,” Williams said. “If you’re not high risk and you don’t fail once in a while, you aren’t doing good R&D. You need to be willing to be risky and willing to accept failure and learn from it, and that’s what the RPSEA model was able to do.” The other “grand challenge” facing the oil and gas industry was how to efficiently and safely take advantage of unconventional oil plays located in the shale regions. Williams calls the shale revolution the oil and gas industry’s “Amazon.com moment”, considering how made previously inaccessible reserves available via collaborative research. “My time at the DOE and early on, there was a big resistance [to shale development],” Williams said. “Why spend tax dollars and work with other people on something we can’t figure out how to get out of the ground? “So, the shale revolution was based on a lot of technology and a lot of persistence of a very few people, but the government was very instrumental in trying to come up with this,” Williams added. Even in down times like this, Williams said there are plenty of reasons to continue researching for the future. Two recently completed RPSEA-funded projects that were just recently published concur. One of these projects focused on needs, assessments and concepts identification of improved oil recovery technologies from the Paleogene and Eocene deepwater reservoirs. Anadarko and a handful of other companies provided the data that not only characterized the reservoirs but also created understanding of what improved

in the Permian Basin with a target of 135 billion barrels of oil in place. Williams said there are several examples of technologies that have been applied to this area to boost production from 3,000 to 30,000 barrels per day. Jeremy Brown, Specialist, Reservoir Management for QRI Group, said his company believes in the benefits ROZ offers its clients in terms of sweep efficiency and accessing oil, but it is hard for customer to justify the risk. He asked Williams if ROZ is something that can economically be applied with prices where they stand today, or is this a solution ready-made for higher oil price points. Williams responded by noting ROZ already is being applied by companies like Kinder Morgan and Occidental Petroleum Corp. on greenfield sits adjacent to traditionally produced fields. He also claimed the economics for such ROZ are profitable if oil prices are at or above $24 per barrel. technologies could extract 79 billion barrels of oil in place with 64 billion remaining in the two plays. The project also identified areas that weren’t researched to get to that part of the 64 billion into production. According to Williams, this is the single most downloaded report RPSEA has published. Another project is identifying the development of technologies enabling small producers to pursue residual oil zones (ROZ). Considering as recently as five years ago, ROZ was hardly a recognized term in the oil and gas industry, today it is very common. This study has improved oil recovery potential in 12 counties

Normalcy is Here A look ’round the corner to what may lie ahead in 2017 and beyond.
Among the many topics discussed among panelists considering the future of the oil and gas industry, the ongoing theme that continued to rear its head is that not only is the worst of the downturn behind the business, but this may be as good as it gets for oil prices. So anyone who has survived thus far should adjust their forecasts for oil prices to remain around $50 for the foreseeable future. “You have to plan to be profitable in sub-$50 oil,” Jorge Leis, Managing Director, Bain & Company, said during the first panel discussion. “That is a very high probable scenario that is coming our way. So, what would you have to do really in order to survive from that? In that’s what you’re starting to see in separation of companies that are really making the right strategic tradeoffs and those that are still hoping that the price itself is going to save them in the future.” General Electric sent shockwaves through the oil and gas industry – including those attending the Oil & Gas Awards Industry Summit – when it combined its oilrelated business with Baker Hughes Inc. Through the deal announced October 31, GE instantly becomes one of the industry’s largest players, according to Bloomberg, by bringing together oilfield services, equipment manufacturing and technology.

Leis said a transaction could be a sign of things to come in the oil and gas industry as major players look for ways to be as efficient as possible in a cost-intensive, unconventional environment – although deals of this magnitude won’t be nearly as common. “I think that fits a predictable pattern of what you’re going to see more of,” Leis said. “Those that understand that this is going to be a different type of recovery are looking for where that activity is going to be, where they are going to be competitively advantaged, and focus all of their business development in those areas.” Not all service and equipment providers have been as fortunate as Baker Hughes, however. The company had Halliburton interested in an acquisition attempt that ultimately failed earlier this year before GE swept in to save the day. According to Moderator Rodney Moore, Co-Managing Partner, Weil Gotshall & Manges LLP, many companies read the tea leaves, so to speak, regarding the direction of oil prices and attempt to be proactive about their future before it was too late. Many of these firms sought the services of law firms like Moore’s to begin restructuring their debt and working with creditors to avoid completely shutting down.

“The companies that have gone through this have now come out the other side and they have a cleaner balance sheet, they have rightsized their business, and starting to recognize the new normal in the pricing in the industry,” Moore said. “M&A transactions that two years ago had a wide gap in it have now gotten much closer. So, what you’re going to see today is a number of companies able to move forward that are either good acquisition targets or they have freed up ability to raise some capital to pursue drilling programs again, depending on pricing.” Lance Dunn, Senior Vice President Sales & Marketing of C&J Energy Services, certainly understands what it takes to get a business back in order after a downturn like this. He said he believes the worst of the pain is over, at least for his part of the oil business in the service industry. His company has shrunk its number of units by nearly 60 percent, he admitted, but that capacity remains very efficient. An often-forgotten area where oil and gas operators attempted to cut corners during this downturn, as well as in the midstream sector, which is an offshoot of the oil and gas industry that spun off major operators beginning in the 2000s, according to Alfredo Perez, Partner with Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP. Much like water prices, this is another entity within the oil and gas industry whose prices have not come down with the cost of a barrel of oil’s steep decline. As a result, Perez said he has seen many bankruptcies from the midstream sector. “The biggest area where people tried to reduce their costs was in the service business and the midstream services, and there have been tremendous amounts of litigation with respect to midstream companies,” Perez said. “You’ve seen a lot of bankruptcies where there’s a big fight because they’ve spent hundreds of millions of dollars to develop the midstream asset through areas where you could never duplicate it again because of environmental concerns, and now they want to renegotiate the contracts at a time to get a significant rate of return on a very large rate of investment.”
Another way global operators can get back to profitability in the new reality of $50 barrels of oil is by scaling back on overhead. Leis said his company is preparing a summit of global EP leaders in the North American unconventional industry who constantly discuss how much money they hemorrhage through overhead. Leis has suggested these firms need to return to the asset model instead of the globalized, centralized functional organization that has grown too bloated for its own good. Leis cited the ExxonMobil’s acquisition of XTO Energy about five years ago as a good example of how to lead an asset-based model for efficiency. As Dunn puts it, ExxonMobil allowed XTO Energy to continue operating as usual aside from connecting financing departments. This kept the firm working as efficiently as possible while reaping the benefits of its new acquisition. “That’s the only example I know of where that model was decided upon from the very beginning,” Leis said. “Others have now moved to that model.” Leis said, for example, BP has stripped down its North American natural gas division after trying to make it work within its global structure, making it an autonomous unit. Now that they are rightsized accordingly, major operators are staying away from long-term investments that will pay off across three decades and instead are focusing on “short-cycle” plays like those typically found in unconventional oil regions. Replying to a question from the audience, Leis, however, said the industry needs to respond in kind by making sure such projects meet the high expectations they have on paper by coming in on time and within budget. “The productivity gains that we’re seeing in unconventionals is leaving conventionals and offshore in the dust,” Leis says. “The industry still has a lot of problems with project management on time and on budget, but on paper, we have gone from $80 to sub $40.”

Industry Update: How will the skill gap be filled when the market picks up? Will workers be reluctant to return to the industry? The “Great Crew Change” may hit the oil and gas industry hard if the current downturn continues to linger for an extended period of time.
With the current state of the oil industry, experienced workers are leaving the sector in droves – via massive layoffs or retirement. While most oil executives expect their industry to return to normal eventually, the current downturn will leave in its wake a skills gap that will be difficult to fill. Calling this period the “Great Crew Change,” Kathy Eberwein, CEO of The Global Edge Consultants, explained during her Industry Update address that this gap will grow larger if the oil industry continues to stagnate. “It’s what’s happening, it’s what’s going to happen,” Eberwein said. “I think the impact of this is going to be dependent upon how long this downturn lasts. The longer it lasts, I think the more of a challenge we’re going to have in bringing some of these people back.” The job losses associated with this downturn in the oil industry are simply staggering since Saudi Arabia, OPEC’s top oil exporter, rejected the production limits typically used to cap output. Citing U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, CNBC reported over 200,000 jobs had been eliminated from November 2014 through the first quarter of 2016.

Eberwein broke down ways to fill in the skills gap into three categories. The first is entrance into the oil industry, which is facing a decline as of late due to the instability of careers in oil. As recently as 2014, 95 percent of petroleum engineering graduates found work within the oil and gas industry, CNBC reported citing Society of Petroleum Engineers stats. Just one year later, that number dropped to 64 percent. Eberwein also said three engineering programs in Texas have told her firm their enrollment was down about 33 percent. “These are all things that are going to be challenging to encourage people to enter the industry,” Eberwein admitted. Along with that traditional feeder system for oil and gas, Eberwein said the industry should consider recruiting engineers from other industries as well as casting a wide net throughout the United States. Eberwein herself was a mechanical engineer who transitioned from power to oil and gas in 1998 before relocating to Texas. “With onshore shale plays, what you will be able to do is attract talent from across the United States,”

Eberwein said. “It won’t just be from the traditional Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma, and I think the industry is going to need to do that – not just focusing on petroleum engineers, but mechanical engineers and all disciplines of engineers. “And they’re going to need to attract people to the industry and sell them on why they would want to be in an industry that is fairly volatile,” Eberwein added. “I think there is going to need to be a concerted effort on this when the market comes back.”
“They get to this point where they miss the interaction, they miss the communication, they miss the intellectual stimulation, they miss making a difference,” Eberwein said. “Then they get to this place where they feel like they want to offer something back. “There is a lot of experience in that bucket that I think the industry is going to have to capture,” Eberwein added. “I think this is something that is going to be really key as move into the next chapter.”
The second category of workers are the existing personnel, or those who avoided the massive layoffs. These employees are carrying big workloads as companies continue to trim as much fat as possible to remain afloat, and Eberwein warned against burning them out.
When Eberwein delivered her address at the Industry Summit on November 3, the outlook for the oil industry was still rather bleak. According to Reuters, U.S. crude prices had fallen to $44.66 per barrel – still much higher than $29.78 in January 2016, but not an ideal price point.
The third pool in the skills gap is the retirement-aged workers, who either have already left the industry or have plans to leave within the next decade or so. Eberwein said many oil and gas employees between the ages of 55 and 65 have accepted packages to retire or become “pseudo-retired,” meaning they don’t have to work but may opt to return to their career on their own terms.
However, she had heard that some capital spending had been approved for 2017, meaning some hiring could begin once again. Also, later in November, Reuters also reported OPEC had agreed to cut oil output for the first time since 2008. Since the announcement, global oil prices surged 15 percent, with Brent crude up to $53.77 on December 1, according to Vox.com.
For the pseudo-retirees, flexibility is their main objective at this point in their careers. Eberwein says this group that possesses invaluable experience will work if their conditions are met. Once they get the “five-month itch” early in their retirement, this generation often wants to get back into the oil and gas game in a limited capacity.
“In typical oil industry fashion, they don’t do anything with subtleties – everything is a big swing one way or another,” Eberwein said. “So, they’ve cut to the bone – further than the bone in some cases – and they’re looking forward to 2017 now that oil has sort of crept up to a level where it looks like it’s at a place where it’s fairly steady.”

Keeping Water Flowing Water is a key factor no matter where the oil price is.
The price of oil may be a long way from the glory days of $100-plus per barrel, but water certainly hasn’t caught up to the industry’s downturn price points. With that in mind, E&P companies throughout the United States continue to search for ways to economically frack viable wells just to stay afloat with Brent prices at about $54 per barrel while avoiding the pitfalls of an unclear regulatory landscape. There may be no greater need for all solutions to the great H20 problem than in Texas, where a heavily fragmented $9 billion industry is ready for answers to some complex questions. Richard Seline, Executive Director for AccelerateH20, led a panel discussion to bring to light some of the Lone Star State’s many issues with water use and how to better serve the largest state in the continental U.S. One of the many barriers-to-entry Seline highlighted during his lengthy opening remarks was the sheer magnitude commercial service providers face when attempting to serve Texas. The state has 16 regional water planning districts in 254 counties which, he said, “sometimes all operate in their own spheres of what they believe the rules and regulations are.” The objective for AccelerateH20, however, is to bring the marketplace to one destination for operators in search of water solutions providers. One area the organization has focused on is the value chain, starting with precommercialization to deployment of technology. Seline said the end-users want plug-inready solutions and are not interested in serving as guinea pigs for not-ready-for-prime-time products. “One thing they have said to us over and over again is, pilot scale is not of interest,” Seline said. “What they want to see is technology that is out in the field,
hundreds of thousands – if not millions – of gallons of water of throughput and being tested and evaluated in the real world and the harsh settings of the marketplace.” To bring in ready-made solutions, AccelerateH20 has established innovative water technology demonstration hubs throughout Texas. Seline said these locations are set up like “concierge services” in areas like the Permian, Midland and Delaware basins where operators in need of water solutions can find what best suits their operations. “The EPs, operators and others want to concentrate on identifying what works and what doesn’t work on quantity, quality and – the most important part – the economics,” Seline said. “Don’t try to make us scientists, don’t try to make us technicians. What [they] really want to understand is, what is your technology going to do to improve our economics – at least at a 20 percent margin.” Thus far, AccelerateH20 has collected at least 150 different technologies that EP companies are scoring and analyzing for industry usage, according to Seline. On the disposal side, Seline said Texas has over 4,000 permitted saltwater disposal (SWD) well sites, but only 300 are directly operated by professionals. This has created a glut of wells that have been shut down or are under review, so SWD wells are in the process of being monitored more closely. In the early stages of his organization’s existence, Seline said two lessons have been learned regarding water management – the first is the economics of water is the only thing that matters when for-profit companies consider new technology. Secondly, data is changing the way operators utilize this technology.
“You don’t want to be regulated into something – you want to lead into something,” Stanley said. “If you’re regulated into something, chances are you’re not going to like what the regulators give you. 28

No matter the technology, however, the regulatory atmosphere will dictate just how fast a commercial application can advance within the marketplace. Alan R. Pyle, CEO of WaterFleet, admitted the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality deserves credit for staying ahead of the times on reviewing new technologies – including reverse osmosis. But he also said state agencies must adhere to overarching federal regulations first and foremost – even if they do not make the most sense for the end-users. “At the end of the day, they have to fall back to staying within EPA’s guidelines on so many things because they’re scared to death of going against that,” Pyle said. “They’re ability to open up and understand technology’s capabilities better is just not in their wheelhouse. “What has to happen is that private enterprise has to demand it to a level that the demonstration can occur and it can be paid for to a point where a company that is bringing that technology onto the market can survive it because it’s expensive,” Pyle said. “And then the regulatory agency can start to try to embrace it and adopt it.”
Pyle described the long, arduous process to get a new technology through the regulatory atmosphere of one state and the U.S. EPA. If a solutions provider intends to take its service to other fracking parts of the United States, they must contend with municipal, county and state regulations in each region, as well. Mark Stanley, CEO of Themark Corporation, would like the state of Texas to borrow a page from the playbook of former Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter, Jr. While in office, Ritter organized a consortium of public, private and government stakeholders to determine the regulations for the Colorado River Basin water supply. Stanley said outreach like this shields private industry from much of the criticism it often faces from community members and environmentalists. “You don’t want to be regulated into something – you want to lead into something,” Stanley said. “If you’re regulated into something, chances are you’re not going to like what the regulators give you. You need to define what’s practical and how you can make money at this.”

In fact, Stanley took his praise of Colorado’s regulatory environment a step further during the question-and-answer portion of the discussion when he deemed the state the most responsive of the 23 oil-related jurisdictions in the United States. He gave Pennsylvania and New York his lowest grades. As CEO of Sourcewater, the self-described “AirBnB for water sourcing and disposal,” Josh Adler said there are legal ramifications beyond regulations that operators must consider when working with companies like his third-party water distributor instead of dealing with water suppliers. Sourcewater relies on connecting companies with water to reuse or dispose of with other EP operators who need water for their next fracking jobs, eliminating the middle man who would bring this water back and forth by connecting these companies directly. Although the water supply typically is well within regulatory mandates, his operator clients often find themselves battling each other. The legal departments for some of Sourcewater’s largest clients typically have service companies like water providers sign

massive master service agreements (MSA) that absolve them of any liability. However, if two major players like Chevron on Shell are trying to work out a water exchange program, the legalese could hold up a deal for months at a time. “The only time that that breaks through is when somebody in operations says, ‘Guys, I’m in a really bad spot here, we have a frack schedule and we don’t have water for it,” Adler says. Despite the delays that may occur, Seline said the emergence of a company like Sourcewater is an example of innovation that occurred by necessity and with exception to the rules in place. This has occurred in other industries like telecommunication and electricity, and business-savvy companies in water management are bound to have similar breakthroughs as long as fracking continues. “What we need to find is a way for us to get past the inception and make innovation something that is a mainstay,” Seline said.

New Technology – Developing cost-effective technologies to improve operations.
As oil and gas operators look for ways to muddle through the current downturn in commodity pricing, there is ample time to find new ways to work more efficiently and safely. Service and equipment suppliers are well-aware of the situation operators face, so they manage to find ways to save clients money with innovative alternatives to the status quo. “To some extent, this slowdown has actually helped us a little bit because it forced people to be more efficient, to save more rig time, and to be safer,” Jeremy LeCompte, Sustaining Engineer for Blackhawk Specialty Tools, said during a panel discussion on new technology. “With the layoffs and the reduced workforce, you have to be able to do more with less, and the only way you can do that is by being more efficient.” LeCompte was referring specifically to his company’s Oil & Gas Awards-winning product, the SkyHook Wireless Chiksan Makeup Device, which allows operators to make up their cementing chiksan iron or hose without the need to send rig personnel above the rig floor. One of the product’s first tests was in the middle of inclement weather, which would have ended a rig run on the spot to keep personnel out of harm’s way. Instead, the SkyHook performed the same operation during the storm, saving substantial rig time that would have otherwise been spent waiting out the conditions. “With our tool, we were able to run it through the weather,” LeCompte said. “I couldn’t see it very well while trying to run the tool, and it got pretty wet, but it was safe and functioning, so that helped us get our foot in the door.” As a petroleum industry consultant, QRI Group has always had to sell its services as a third-party outsider whether oil prices were at $20 or $100 a barrel. Knowing that, Jeremy Brown, Specialist, Reservoir Management for QRI Group, said his company is adapting to customer needs by focusing on big data instead of traditional modeling.

This pivot comes at a time when operators have laid off many of the geologists and engineers that were required to deliver models that typically take upwards of six months to build out for a mature asset, Brown said. In lieu of those resources, QRI Group can provide datadriven analysis in much less time modeling requires. “Instead of spending the time modeling, we believe that if all the data can be organized and consolidated very quickly, you can come up with similar results through automation of geologic workflows, automation of engineering workflows, and you can forecast based on machine learning and neuro networks,” Brown said. “Our vision is that you can supply the same quality result in terms of reliability as a model but in a smaller fraction of the time.” Mike Nations, Engineering Manager for Precision Connections LLC, has helped his clients keep an eye on the bottom line by developing safety solutions for aging infrastructure. Fracking operators have been relying on legacy technology in shale plays for years – Nations said some major suppliers have been losing one in 12 wells due to API and buttress thread casing (BTC) connectors that simply could not hold the high pressure associated with frack backs. Nations saw a need to maintain the capability of those connections with the robustness for new installations. Nations and Precision Connectors came up with couplings that are more robust, designed specifically to handle the high pressures that come with frack jobs. He has acquired three patents on the technology, and Precision today has more than 1 million feet of current product in the ground that is BTC compatible operating at a 100 percent success rate. “I’ve come up with a way to keep your couplings from splitting by applying some really advanced engineering techniques to an old technology,” Nations said. Developing new services and products is good in theory, but getting clients to embrace changes to their operations is another matter. For Precision Connections, Nations said the company brings the

R&D directly to the customers, who get involved in the process from the conception through final testing. “We showcase these products and show that they can take these kinds of stresses and develop them in front of our customers,” Nations said. “Then we field test these products with our customers in real-world situations in wells, and follow it through to the end.” QRI Group has had to offer its clients free trial runs to gain acceptance from the rest of the market. Brown said buy-in from customers has been challenging, but his company has managed to overcome this hurdle through good reviews from those who have tried bigdata technology and benefited from it. “When something is new, you feel like you’re taking a risk or you’re spending your own money or your company’s money on it,” Brown said. “You have to do a couple of them for free so you have validation that this actually works. “No one wants to take a risk on being the first mover,” Brown said. “All the incentive is to be the second or third mover, but not the first one.” Of course, every oil and gas operator is interested in new ways to deal with the massive amounts of water necessary for frack jobs. For Precision Connections, that means focusing on shale plays with longer laterals as operators aim to go further and deeper using higher pressure. This will require better materials to develop pipe that is stronger and more reliable. “The water we’re putting back in these wells is fairly corrosive to pipe,” Nations said. “So, we’re actually having to work with alloys and heat treatments to basically prolong the life of that pipe in the slightly briny, H2S concentration, corrosive environment.”
“Most of your production costs goes into the water,” Brown said. “Our research and development focuses simply on producing less of it to begin with. If you are going to inject water in a water flood – usually into mature oil fields that are very complex – you want to inject it without having to produce it very quickly.” LeCompte’s Blackhawk Specialty Tools is on the cusp of getting a major boost for its products. In October, parent company Blackhawk Group was purchased by Frank’s International for $321 million. The acquisition – which was finalized in November – will give Blackhawk Specialty Tools exposure to international markets beyond the Gulf and onshore sectors the company has served since its founding in 2008. Moderator Rich Haut, Senior Research Scientist for the Houston Advanced Research Center, pressed for some answers regarding transparency that is demanded from the oil and gas industry, specifically through social media. While the panelists did not have much collective experience with social media, Brown said transparency is of utmost importance for QRI Group’s relationships with its clients considering the type of information solutions they seek. “We can’t deliver a solution that is in a black box that no one will trust,” Brown said. “Our clients simply expect us to open the books on everything all the time.”
