Stay Safe on the Job Mindful Meals Five Healthy Base Ingredients Give, But Not Too Much What is Reiki?

Brought to you by

Stay Safe on the Job Does your work involve lifting, bending, reaching, pushing, or pulling? You may be at risk of a musculoskeletal disorder (MSD), such as carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, or lowback injury. Job-related MSDs are one of the most common reasons for lost work time — up to 33 percent of all worker injury and illness cases. To learn more, talk to your doctor and visit osha.gov. In the meantime, here are some tips to help prevent injury while on the job: 1. M ind your posture. As you stand, walk, carry packages, sit, or kneel, good posture is an important element. 2. T ake stretch breaks. If you sit all day, get up and walk around for five minutes every hour. Don’t forget to take movement breaks when you’re at home, just like you would at work. Be sure to stretch your arms, legs, and shoulders. 3. P ractice proper lifting. Carrying heavy items on a regular basis can hurt parts of your body that were not made for lifting, such as the back or knees. 4. K eep joints, muscles, and bones strong. Perform strength-building exercises, focusing on core strength (abdominals and back). Make sure to get enough Vitamin D and calcium for healthy bones. 5. Q uit smoking. Smokers have less oxygen available for their muscle, tissue, and tendons. Smoking can cause a loss of bone mineral content and an increase in fractures.

Mindful Meals Holiday overeating can easily turn into a habit. It’s time to turn mindless eating into mindful meals. Become more aware of what you’re eating and pay attention to small changes that can make a big difference. Plan ahead. When eating out, select a healthier meal from the menu ahead of time, so you will be less likely to give in to temptation. Prepare. Have healthy snacks readily available when and where you are usually hungry. For example, keep a stash of fruit or nuts at work. Be present. Eat slowly and savor each bite. Your brain will get the signal that you are full more quickly than if you eat while watching TV or using your computer, tablet, or phone. Keep a log. It’s always helpful to keep track of what you eat. Even if you aren’t counting calories or points, simply being accountable goes a long way. Identify influencers. Are there situations (or people) that usually cause you to eat more? Avoid them if you can. If you can’t, try the tactics above to prevent overindulging.

Five Healthy Base Ingredients Healthy cooking doesn’t have to be complicated. Use these five ingredients as a foundation for countless healthy meals. 1. C anned salmon. It has nearly double the omega 3 fatty acids as skinless and boneless salmon fillets. Add it to salads with a squeeze of lemon, make salmon cakes, salmon salad sandwiches, or add it to pasta. 2. M ixed greens. Arrange greens on a plate or fill a bowl, then top with lean meats, beans, chopped veggies, and a sprinkle of sunflower or pumpkin seeds. 3. Eggs. Have a bunch of odds and ends in the fridge? Combine them all into a quick, high-protein frittata or omelet. 4. B eans and legumes. Whether using navy beans or peas as the foundation to hearty soups, black or pinto beans for tacos and quesadillas, lentils in your salads, or ground chick peas or edamame for hummus, any bean-based recipe is sure to be packed with protein and fiber to leave you feeling full and satisfied. 5. F resh or frozen fruit. Combine your favorite fruits as the base of unlimited smoothie options. Get creative and have fun exploring various fruit and vegetable combinations.

Recipe of the Month: Simple Salmon Cakes Ingredients: 1 tablespoon olive oil

1/3 cup onion, chopped

14 ounces (2 cans) salmon

1/4 cup parsley, chopped

1 cup wheat bread crumbs or panko

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

1 egg, beaten

Salt and pepper

Instructions: Mix all ingredients except the olive oil and form into patties. Line a baking sheet with foil, and spray with a little cooking spray. Set oven to 250 degrees. Add olive oil to pan and add patties, cooking 2 – 3 min on each side until brown. Place salmon cakes on baking sheet and bake for an additional 20 minutes.

Give, But Not Too Much Generosity is important, but what happens when your good intentions leave you feeling…not so good? It may be time to set boundaries. Below are some red flags that helping isn’t helping: • Your resources are sapped. Healthy helping means staying within your means. • Your relationship isn’t balanced. Are you doing more for someone than they do for themselves? • You reinforce a problem. Rescuing someone from the consequences of their behavior will not encourage them to change. If you find yourself giving too much to a certain cause, organization, or person, see what happens if you step back. You (and the recipient of your generosity) may find out that they're more capable than you'd realized. Then try being generous to yourself.

What is Reiki? Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation. During a Reiki session, practitioners place their hands lightly on or just above the body to facilitate a healing response. Though Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religious belief. Rather, it promotes the idea that the mind exists not only in the brain, but also throughout the body. Reiki practitioners believe that negative thoughts and feelings can collect in the body and restrict the flow of energy. Very little high-quality research has been done on Reiki, so we can’t confirm its usefulness. However, Reiki hasn’t been shown to have any harmful side effects (as long as it doesn’t postpone or replace seeing a health care provider), and may be relaxing. So, if you're looking for something new, why not give it a try?

Express Feelings without a Fight 1. Use “I” statements without blaming the other person. 2. Communicate what you want before what you don’t want. 3. Be honest about your feelings. 4. Don’t assume confrontation causes conflict.

Self-Care in the New Year People who help people can fall prey to burnout — so how do you prevent it? Believe it or not, an important step in tackling your responsibilities to others may be to do something nice for yourself. Much like the air travel rule of putting on your own oxygen mask before you attempt to help others, you will be in your best condition to help others if you are strong yourself. Here are three cornerstones of self-care: • Eat right. Be sure to eat healthy, satisfying food — and enough of it. • S leep tight. Getting enough sleep can help you feel supercharged the next day. • E njoy life. The world won’t stop spinning if you enjoy your hobbies! Be sure to set aside adequate time. If taking care of others is part of your daily routine, be sure to make self-care one of your New Year’s resolutions.

Monthly Quiz: 1. Which of the following ingredients can be the base of a healthy meal? a. Pasta b. Beans and legumes c. Beef

2. What is a small change that can help you eat more mindfully? a. Have a cocktail with dinner. b. Eat in large groups. c. View a menu ahead of time so that you can identify a healthy choice.

3. Choose the option that best describes Reiki. a. Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation b. Reiki is not a replacement for a doctor's care. c. Both a. and b.

ANSWERS: 1.) b

2.) c

Health and wellness tips for your work and life— presented by The Reschini Group

New Year’s Resolutions: Lifestyle Changes vs. Quick Changes The New Year and How It May Affect Your Benefits The beginning of 2017 signals a new plan year for some insurance plans. For individuals with these plans, this means that any changes made to health plans and new deductibles will take effect January 1, 2017. It will be important to keep these changes in mind when you or your family seek out health care. You should also be on the lookout for things like changing prescription drug coverage limits and changing copay amounts. In addition to reviewing your policy, be sure to follow these quick tips to be a wise health care consumer next year. 

Consider using generic prescription drugs instead of brand-name drugs, when possible.

Shop around for the lowest rates before visiting a doctor, when possible.

Visit the emergency room for emergencies only.

Opt for outpatient care instead of inpatient care when given the choice.

This article is intended for informational purposes only and is not intended to be exhaustive, nor should any discussion or opinions be construed as professional advice. Readers should contact a health professional for appropriate advice. © 2016 Zywave, Inc. All rights reserved.

Historically, one of the top New Year’s resolutions is to lose weight. Unfortunately, many people look to fad diets and weight-loss products to achieve their goals quickly. While fad diets may prove effective initially, research shows that many people don’t find long-term success with these types of diets. Instead of setting a goal to lose weight fast this New Year’s, set a goal to lead a healthier lifestyle. Common lifestyle New Year’s resolutions include the following: 

Exercise regularly - Aim to get at least 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity a week and to do strength training exercises of major muscle groups at least twice a week.

Maintain a well-balanced, healthy diet - Try to eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein-rich foods, and healthy fats. Make it a goal to incorporate more fruits and veggies into your diet.

Increase the amount of sleep you get - One of the best ways to become healthier is to get enough sleep. Try to get at least seven hours of sleep, the expert-recommended amount, per night.

Regardless of what you choose to make your New Year’s resolution, make sure it is a “SMART” goal - one that is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely - to increase the odds that you will stick to it.

SIMPLE GREEN SMOOTHIE

National Blood Donor Month

1 cup kale or spinach 1 medium banana

Since 1970, National Blood Donor Month has been celebrated in January. Historically, the winter season is one of the most difficult times of the year to collect enough blood products and donations to meet patient needs. While “whole blood” donations are the most common, individuals can also make platelet, power red, and plasma donations.

1 cup low-fat coconut or almond milk 1 cup plain Greek yogurt 1 medium apple, cored and sliced 1 cup frozen fruit of your choice 1 Tbsp. chia seeds (optional)

Donated blood is used for blood transfusions. Common scenarios in which blood transfusions are needed include the following:

1 Tbsp. flax seeds (optional)

PREPARATIONS 1.

In a blender, blend the kale or spinach and the milk.

Patients suffering from severe trauma following disasters and accidents.

2.

Add in the rest of the ingredients one at a time, blending after each item.

3.

Serve cold.

Patients receiving surgical treatments and some medical treatments, including cancer patients and patients with sickle cell disease.

4.

Reserve the leftover smoothie in the refrigerator for later in the day or the next day. The smoothie should be consumed within 24 hours.

Female patients suffering from pregnancy complications before, during, and after childbirth.

Health and wellness tips for your work, home and life—brought to you by the insurance specialists at The Reschini Group

Vision changes are often the first sign of diabetes in an individual. Many cases of diabetes are actually identified for the first time during an eye exam.

VISION CARE: DIABETIC EYE DISEASE Diabetics are at a significantly increased risk for developing a wide range eye problems, including the potential for vision loss. Diabetic Eye Disease Diabetic eye disease refers to a group of eye conditions that can affect people with diabetes or pre-diabetes, as well as individuals with prolonged high blood sugar levels. These conditions all have the potential to cause severe and permanent vision loss or blindness. Diabetic eye disease includes the following conditions: • Diabetic retinopathy is damage to the blood vessels in the retina and is often a sign of damage to other organs. • Cataracts are the clouding of the lens of the eye, which often develops earlier in diabetics. • Glaucoma is an increase in fluid pressure inside the eye, leading to optic nerve damage. Vision loss is twice as likely to develop in a diabetic than in someone without diabetes. Prevention Because diabetic eye disease often presents no warning signs, finding and treating it is challenging. If you have diabetes, make sure you have a dilated eye exam to allow your doctor to see the inside of your eyes and check for signs of disease at least once a year. Keeping your diabetes under control is the best way to control the development or progression of diabetic eye disease.

Watch your diet, exercise, monitor your blood sugar levels, and take your diabetes medications. If you have already been diagnosed and treated for diabetic eye disease and are still experiencing vision problems, be sure to follow up with your doctor as soon as possible. If you are at high risk for diabetes and begin experiencing changes in your vision, especially blurred vision, having an eye exam and being tested for diabetes is extremely important. Treatment Medical treatment of diabetic eye disease is generally directed at the underlying problem—the diabetes. Better diabetic control dramatically decreases your chances of developing diabetic eye disease. Your eye care professional may also suggest laser surgery as a treatment option for conditions such as diabetic retinopathy. Laser surgery, along with the appropriate follow-up care, may reduce the risk of blindness by 90 percent. However, it cannot restore vision that has already been lost, which is why it is so important for diabetics and those at high risk to have annual eye exams.

All fruits and vegetables are good choices for the prevention of heart disease and stroke, but the best choices are green leafy vegetables and citrus fruits.

FRUITS AND VEGETABLES FOR DISEASE PREVENTION Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is not only important for maintaining a healthy weight and general health, but it can help prevent chronic diseases and conditions, including: Cardiovascular Disease Heart disease is the world’s leading killer. All fruits and vegetables are good choices for the prevention of heart disease and stroke, but the best choices are green leafy vegetables and citrus fruits. High Blood Pressure and High Cholesterol High blood pressure is a primary risk factor for heart disease and stroke. How fruits and vegetables lower cholesterol is still a bit of a mystery. However, some experts think that the soluble fiber in them helps block the absorption of cholesterol from other foods. Cancer It appears that eating more fruit may lower the risk of cancers of the esophagus, stomach, and lungs, and reduces the risk of cancers of the mouth, pharynx, colon-rectum, larynx, kidney, and bladder. Gastrointestinal Conditions Indigestible fiber that comes from fruits and vegetables is important for preventing intestinal ailments. As fiber passes through the digestive system, it soaks up water and expands. This can calm irritable bowels and decrease pressure inside the intestinal tract.

Cataracts and Macular Degeneration Usually related to aging, a cataract is the gradual clouding of the eye’s lens. Macular degeneration is damage to the center of the retina. Dark green leafy vegetables contain two pigments (lutein and zeaxanthin) that aid in protecting the eye. And the vitamin A found in carrots, cantaloupe, and pumpkin aids in night vision. Birth Defects Neural tube defects (NTDs) are major defects of a baby’s brain or spine. Folate (folic acid) is a B vitamin used in the body to make new cells. Most NTDs can be prevented if a woman has enough of this in her body before becoming pregnant. Folic acid is found in asparagus, cooked spinach, and certain fortified breakfast cereals. Other diseases and conditions that can be prevented are coronary artery disease and osteoporosis, as well as dental problems and skin infections. The next time you get hungry, consider eating a fruit or vegetable.
