F ROM OU R F OU N DE R S It’s a new year and with that comes an exciting new collection. Spring has arrived and there’s nowhere you can see it more than in nature, which has been the biggest influence in our new range. Spring is a time for renewal, as the buds bloom, why not give your home a new lease of life? In this magazine you can see our new seasonal looks: Sue shows us around her Californian dream, Lucinda goes wild with plants in London and Annabel decorates with pastels in Norfolk. We’ve called upon industry experts, who let us know where to travel on a short city break and shared some great spring recipes. We also get some chocolate tips from Jo Fairley, co-founder of Green & Black’s. We hope you enjoy our new collection, as much as we do.

FOUNDERS
AN INDIAN SUMMER Two of our Founders, Lucinda Waterhouse and Sue Jones, announced they were off to India to inspect new collections, here’s what happened...
I
t’s 9am. An orange Rajasthani sun shines through cascading bougainvillea.
Over a breakfast of steaming hot porridge and scrambled eggs, battle plans for the day ahead commence. Amidst the sun-dappled gardens of Samode Haveli, the roar of Jaipur’s archaic old town is a distant rumble. “More coffee Ma’am?” a waiter in a starched white Nehru jacket asks. “Yes please,” the reply. “We’re going to need it.” Half-an-hour later, bags packed, stomachs filled, two of our Founders, Lucinda and Sue, are bundled into a white Toyota Innova, careering its way towards the outskirts of Jaipur, past camel carts, dare-devil motor-cyclists and chaiwallas. Welcome to India. First stop, one of our oldest manufacturers. We are greeted by three magnificent white cows. Considered sacred in India, it is believed that they will bring their owner their deepest needs and desires. Over tiny cups of overly-sweetened chai and milky coffee, we discuss the new collection. An Aladdin’s cave of fabrics and furnishings, carpets and curios opens before us, overlooked by hand-painted family portraits of this third generation business. Where to start? Rugs. A kaleidoscopic collection of dhurries, kilims and runners are paraded in front of us by a pair of experienced workmen, who make light work of this laborious task, flicking through them like pages of an enormous book.

FOUNDERS
OKA first travelled to India for design inspiration, then delved deep into Jaipur for its technical know-how. The craftspeople we work with all come from a long line of carpenters, weavers, and printers, whose skills have been passed down through the generations. Famed for its artisans, Jaipur is something of a hub for these traditional skills. Lucinda explains: “When we travel to India, we’re looking to have our imagination ignited through its vibrant

colours and textures, whilst being mindful of what is comfortable, and what works within the UK market. It’s very easy to get what we call ‘India goggles’. The piece arrives in London, and it doesn’t work at all! The aim is to create something that is in keeping with traditions yet modern. Block prints and paisley patterns done in a contemporary way. Eastern designs reimagined for a western palette.”
“We’ve been travelling to India for interior inspiration for 20 years, and have had relationships with some of our suppliers for just as long. We know their families; we bring gifts for their children,” Sue elaborates. We are familiar with their strengths and their weaknesses, and we have developed long-standing relationships, based on trust and transparency. It makes working and returning to their workplace that bit more fun. Indian hospitality is unbridled, and you always feel as though you are returning to visit old friends. Amazingly, “In all that time, we’ve never had a disagreement between the three of us,” says Lucinda, sounding somewhat surprised herself. Three is the magic number after all, and this interior design triumvirate know how to keep things cordial. It does make casting decisions that bit easier. And if something doesn’t work? We never say “I told you so.”

FOUNDERS
Back to the factory: having lost track of time, we are whisked into the block-printing room… where there is not a soul to be found. “On lunch” a gentleman informs us. Yet another chance for a cup of chai and the opportunity to educate the OKA team on the complexities of block-printing. “The print will differ ever so slightly, depending on who completed that particular patch, and at what time of the day.”
“A print made in the afternoon, by a craftsperson having enjoyed his khana (lunch), will have more colour and depth, compared to one printed before lunch.” “The same goes for block prints created by heavier or stronger workers. The print will have a different look.” Yet these anomalies are part of what makes block-printing, in particular, such a valuable skill, and one that must be kept alive, despite easier and quicker alternatives in screen and digital printing. There is a human element to it, and one that makes block prints so unique. From the pattern to the block, the colours, to the print: all are drawn, carved, mixed, and administered by hand. Hang around for long enough and you can watch as a plain white ream of cotton is transformed in a matter of hours, into a decorated tablecloth, bedspread, or napkin set.
One last meeting with the owner of the factory, where we discuss in person some of our more niche designs for the upcoming collection, influenced by some antique camping gear from the USA. At OKA, we really do source our inspiration from all over! We part ways for another six months, over yet more thimble-sized cups of chai. No wonder people drink so many cups of the stuff here. Having waved the three white bovine beauties farewell, we battled back through Rajasthan’s capital city’s “office time” traffic, ruminating over our favourite designs of the day. A roadside seller hawks print blocks on the side of the road, next to a florist bearing marigold garlands. “Perhaps those prints would go nicely with that orange?” we wonder. In a country as frenetic, and filled with organised chaos as India, it’s amazing what you find when you’re not entirely sure what you’re looking for. But for now, it’s back to the hotel. Just in time for dinner and a well-earned gin & tonic.

hen Sue was designing this Californian home, her first priority was the walls, “I wanted them to look like plaster, as it adds texture and depth. The result makes the home feel cooler and more earthy.” The plaster effect was actually created by layering paint, providing a great neutral background that still looks interesting. “The sitting room is large and spacious and although I didn’t want it to be cluttered, it was important to me that it didn’t look sparse. The splashes of colour were essential, as they add warmth, but I was very careful to choose tones that worked together.”

The concept for the kitchen originated from Sue’s love of the ceiling hanging frame. “I chose to hang these pieces but I noticed that it was just about hanging multiples, it didn’t really matter what I hung - anything can look good.“ Obviously the kitchen had to complement the rest of the house. “I didn’t want it to be a brutally modern kitchen, of course, it had to be smart but I wanted it to look like you could actually use it.” “I’m completely addicted to indoor/outdoor tables, I’m particularly pleased with how this one looks with these newly designed chairs. The chairs took several attempts to perfect, we ended up taking different parts from multiple chairs to create these unique looking designs.”

his scheme was designed by Bruce MacArthur, creator of our instore visual experience. “I wanted this room to be simple but sophisticated. The house is in the most amazing setting, looking directly onto Lake Geneva. So I decorated in navy blue and white. I’ve always loved the sea, so I introduced nautical
elements, such as faux coral and the yacht framed print, they were just a bit of fun but they add such character. I wanted to use a traditional style and combine it with contemporary pieces, such as the lamps and sofa. In the past you would never combine both chrome and gold but as long as you have quite a simple scheme, it can look beautiful.”

TRAVEL
A Weekend Adventure If you want ideas for a short haul city break, here are the top locations according to Tom Barber, co-founder of award-winning travel company Original Travel and Travel Editor of Esquire Magazine.
E
veryone loves a city break, and if they don’t, well… they ought to, because what’s not to like about a short, sharp hit of culture, nightlife and gastronomic blowouts that – when done properly – can feel like a week away or more? The only downside would be a failure to look beyond the obvious. Don’t get me wrong, the Paris, Rome and New Yorks of this world are classic city breaks for a very, very good reason, but if you want to go a little under the radar, or like the thought of being the only person around the dining room table (OKA, naturally) to have been somewhere supercool, try these urban outliers on for size. Naples Whether you read Elena Ferrante’s epic Neapolitan Novels quartet or cheated with the new HBO/Sky TV series, you’ll know that Naples itself plays a starring role. It’s not an altogether flattering portrayal, but for a slice of genuine southern Italian life in all its searing, passionate reality, Naples is hard to beat. And on the subject of slices, you’ll eat never-better pizza, best sampled at Da Michele, and always, always, made using tomatoes grown on the slopes of nearby Mount Vesuvius. Then work off any excess eating by walking the trail to the volcano’s crater for exceptional views back over the city and sea beyond. Speaking of the sea - if you want a dose of luxury to top or tail the trip, the glorious and glamorous island of Capri is a short ferry away.
Gothenburg For so long second fiddle to the - admittedly gorgeous - capital, Stockholm, Gothenburg is enjoying a moment in the Scandinavian sun. Why? Because a city that was once most famous as an industrial centre and home of Volvo has found its mojo in a major way. Expect a high hipster quotient, achingly cool vintage stores, sensational seafood restaurants and bordellochic boutique hotels. Then practice that most civilised of Swedish pastimes – the fika – basically a café break to enjoy a gossip and strong coffee with accompanying small cakes. Repeat several times a day if required. When you want a break from this civilised civic life, head out of town to explore the beautiful granite islands of the neighbouring archipelago by kayak. It’s great exercise too because it’s a surprisingly tiring way to get around!

Lyon The foodie capital of France? Paris, sûrement? Mais non, mes braves, c’est Lyon (that’s quite enough Franglais, Tom.) Yes, it’s true. Most French people (sauf les Parisiens, naturellement) acknowledge that Lyon, the second city, has the finest food in France. In an increasingly vegan era the emphasis on meat dishes might be less of a draw than before, but the fabulously atmospheric bouchons (Lyonnais bistros) where France’s finest chefs create their degustation defining dishes are still wonderful places to while away a few hours, if only to enjoy the local Rhone and (criminally under-rated) Beaujolais wines. When you stagger out, we can point out a few traboules or secret doorways that lead to hidden passageways between the city’s blocks so you can get a glimpse behind the scenes.

LOREM IPSUM
Fez “Marrakech? Oh, not like it was 20 years ago.” It’s an oft overheard phrase in travel circles, but if that puts you off visiting the default Moroccan city, then consider another of the country’s former capitals: Fez, a city that’s exactly like it was 20 years ago, and 800 years ago, for that matter. Fez is home to the largest intact medina (old town) in the world, and to get lost (a happy certainty) in the car-free alleyways here is to indulge in a spot of time travel, with sights, sounds and smells (thanks to the almost over-poweringly pongy tanneries) pretty much unchanged since medieval times. When you do find your way out, visit the oldest extant library and university in the world and then stay in a very comfortable riad hotel, complete with pool and tinkling fountains. This being Morocco, you’ll also get plenty of chances to put your haggling skills to the test in the city’s souqs.

F
ounder, Annabel Astor, created a relaxed coastal home in Norfolk. “I wanted the palette to be predominantly subdued but then to add one pastel colour per room.” The home’s interior had to be dictated by the surrounding landscape outside, so she included plenty of bunches, hung wildlife prints and introduced natural elements,
34
such as rattan and wood. Wood is a theme that runs throughout the whole home, from the whitewashed wood panelling on the walls to the wooden floors and furniture. “I wanted the home to feel calm but sophisticated and the wood adds a natural aspect, which works well alongside the relatively neutral colour scheme.”

Annabel’s dining room continues the relaxed theme, but pastel shades of green are introduced through the chair covers, plants, jugs and pictures on the wall. “Green works so well in dining rooms, this one particularly benefits from such a pale shade. CONISBROUGH
KEEPING UP WITH THE CONISBROUGHS
I
t all started with Mr Conisbrough, the dining table. He was used to his popularity, “There are only a few of us in the world that can sit as comfortably inside as they do out,” he’d tell anyone who would listen, whilst stroking his own weathered face. But one day he realised that despite the crowds surrounding him, he was all alone. Lucinda Waterhouse saw Mr Conisbrough’s lonely state and took pity on him. “How can I help?” she asked. “All I want is company”, he responded. Lucinda knew what to do and a couple of months later Mr Conisbrough woke up to find the most beautiful coffee table he’d ever seen.
She was short with curves in all the right places. He stuttered “Hello...” and her weathered surface blushed in response. She was quickly reprimanded with a scolding look from Mrs ConsoleConisbrough, who warned the young coffee table about her ruggedly handsome nephew. As time passed, Mr Conisbrough fell in love with the coffee table and she began to espresso her own feelings more. It wasn’t long before they were married, though it was a slightly wooden affair. Next came baby bench, who wasn’t really baby-sized at all. The family lived happily every after, always on the lookout for a new home.

The Inspiration Behind My New ‘Chitiki Collection’ “
M
y cushion collection was originally inspired by a stunning Turkish coat that I came across. I just loved the combination of patterns that had been used. Traditionally, Turkish fabrics were always crafted on narrow looms, so this is exactly what we did with the Tanaman Cushion Covers.
Each side of the Bohlam and Tanaman Cushion Covers are completely different - meaning you can have different looks depending on which side you show. I wanted the collection to be comfortable and luxurious, so we used cushions that were slightly larger than normal.”

FOOD
T A Fork In The Road William Sitwell, the Daily Telegraph’s restaurant reviewer and MasterChef critic, discovers there’s more than worms and weeds as he attempts to dig for victory.
he cyclical beauty of the natural world - the way in which Mother Nature’s seasons bestow upon us humans the fruits of the land - is never better demonstrated than during spring. For it is now, as the sun warms the chilled earth, embracing the land with a fertile hug, that little seedlings appear. Nurtured by heat and water the earth begins to bear fruit. From dull, dead-looking potatoes come almost miraculous buds, grass blades right themselves, stretch up high and start to grow. The little purple heads of asparagus, morphing from straggly underground roots, pop through the soil. For yes, longer days are on the horizon, summer - the actual taste of joy - is upon us. Or so countless food writers, editors, TV producers and other recipe hounds would have you believe. Look at them now, blurting out their relentless clichés. And see? I can almost do it myself. Of course, most of us actually buy food from supermarkets, the growing and rearing of which is somewhat less romantic than you might think. But must we really all be slaves to the retail beasts? Spring is springing as we speak so let us honour nature, just a little bit, and start growing. It’s a little impractical to keep a pig but what about some seeds? Think of those fresh leaves, cut from the garden. How they shall decorate the table and please our palates! And how cheap is a pack of seeds? We are talking pennies! If you’re a novice, here’s how to do it.
“The little purple heads of asparagus, morphing from straggly underground roots, pop through the soil.”
First you’ll need some gloves (£15 will get you a nice pair from Prince Charles’ Highgrove shop) and then get yourself a tiny bit of land. Two hundred square foot in Gloucestershire, about 0.5% of an acre, might cost you £100, at £10,000 an acre, so once you’ve acquired that, dig in some manure. A big stinking pile from a neighbouring farmer might be around £25. Use with a quality, heavy fork (try Sneeboer’s for £150), then rotavate the land (hire one or use a Camon V8, which costs around £2,545) before hoeing (a nice antique from ebay, around £100) it smooth. Then get out all the seeds you have purchased (for under £10 you can get packs of veg and salad from Suttons). Look at the back of each pack to see their individual sowing and harvesting schedules. Then make a plan for weekly, fortnightly and monthly sowing. Plant the seeds as directed, having drawn neat lines with a dibber (£4 on ebay) following string that you have stretched across the patch between two sticks (Burgun & Ball gardening planting line - £10). Label each line with a marker (re-useable with mini boards from Marshalls Seeds, from £7.90) Water with a good can (antique ones on ebay are around £25) then ensure you hoe (Waitrose & Partner Garden stock these for just under £20) each day between the lines. Cover the seeds with netting or thin lines of cotton to prevent birds from eating the seeds. Water and hoe, water and hoe and water and hoe. Continue once they start to shoot up, harvest and do not go on holiday, or they’ll go to seed. You could of course hire a gardener to plant and maintain the crop (£15 per hour), but that would defeat the object of this passion project. So really you need to quit your job, cancel all foreign holidays and switch the heating off in winter. Alternatively purchase any required salad and veg from your nearest supermarket.

With more and more of us opting to work from home, the home office is becoming one of the most important rooms in the house.
G
one are the days when ‘working from home’ was a synoynm for slacking. The self-employed now make up an estimated five million of the UK population and a large proportion of them name their primary place of work as their own home.
A lot of companies invest substantially into creating the perfect environment for their employees, encouraging both comfort and productivity, and your home office should not suffer just because you’re the only diligent worker.

“As far as I’m concerned, every room in the house should have books.” Sue Jones
Shelf Life Founder Sue Jones shares the design inspiration behind our iconic Ashmolean Shelves.
“I was searching for elegant shelves that were sturdy enough to hold our vast library of books, but I couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for. Living in a period home, I wanted shelves that blended in with the architecture but had the clean lines and sleek structure of a contemporary design.” So Sue designed what was to become our best-selling Ashmolean Shelves. Inspired by classical architectural lines with minimal detailing, the range is chameleon-like in its ability to fit into both modern and traditional schemes. 1. our bed is not just a mattress and base, it is a symbol of comfort, elegance and beauty. This is your sacred space, it needs to be the place that you feel most comfortable, most relaxed and most at peace. But it also has to show your personal style, cue the headboard.
It’s difficult to see how comfortable a mattress is, before you lay on it, but a headboard, you can see it even from a picture. Here we show you four identical beds, so you can see how different headboards and cushions can transform your bedroom. Which do you like best?

hen you’re choosing a seating area for your outdoor space, you have to consider size. If you have a small balcony or roof garden, you must optimise it efficiently. Consider what you are most likely to use, perhaps you can only have a sunbed or a dining table. There is no wrong answer, just choose what will bring you the most joy. For larger gardens, you can have multiple seating areas. A small table for intimate outdoor breakfasts, a bigger table in another part of the garden for lunch and dinner parties, and a bench or sofa for rests from gardening. Then there’s the issue of where to place the sunbeds. Sun worshippers should definitely consult their sundials and work out the perfect location, probably where the sun hits in the afternoon (though obviously this is dependent on your schedule).

My Favourite Things Jo Fairley is one of the UK’s leading female entrepreneurs. At the age of 23 she became the UK’s youngest magazine editor, in 1991 she started her entrepreneurial journey, co-founding Green & Black’s Chocolate. How would you describe your job? I don’t like the word ‘juggling’ – I prefer ‘integrating’, but I ‘integrate’ running The Perfume Society and Beauty Bible, being a ‘Chocolate Ambassador’ for Green & Black’s and travelling the UK (and the world) as a motivational speaker, sharing my entrepreneurial journey. How did your career begin? Actually, as a PA before I got my first magazine job at 19 – and ended up being the youngest-ever magazine editor at 23, of Look Now magazine. What has been the best moment of your career? Pretty much anytime I find a bar of Green & Black’s in a minibar of a hip hotel. What do you wish you had known when you started your career? “OKA faux flowers. I used to be snobby about them That 10 minutes of meditation a day is so amazing for clarity and focus. (I use the Calm app.) but I’m totally converted!” What made you start Green & Blacks? FAUX HYDRANGEA STEM £15 I found two squares of organic dark chocolate on my husband’s desk from a sample bar he’d had made (an organic pioneer, he also founded Whole Earth Foods and is an amazing innovator). As it melted on my tastebuds, I knew we had to share this with the world – and I sunk my entire £20,000 life savings into buying two tons of it. What is your favourite chocolate? Green & Black’s Sea Salt. No contest. “This console table looks great over an As a female entrepreneur what advice would you give to young women who are beginning ugly radiator.” their careers? PISCES CONSOLE TABLE Be authentically ‘you’. Don’t ever feel you have to 166x40x83cmH £1,585 play a role or be someone else. It allows you to relax into a role and get on with the job. How much chocolate do you eat a week? Probably a bar and a bit (a ‘row’ of it every day at 4pm with Rare Tea Company Tarry Souchong). That keeps me going through the early evening! NEW What’s the best advice you’ve ever been SET OF FOUR ARLECCHINO given? TUMBLERS £75 ‘If you don’t do it, you’ll never know what would have happened if you had done it.’ From a postcard in Carnaby Street, purchased age 15. Do you have a favourite room at home? Bedroom. We even watch TV in bed. I love our living room but we only use it when friends or family visit, despite best intentions. The bedroom “ I use these on our beach is incredibly pretty and has the most wonderful picnics and nobody can garden views. believe they’re not What makes a house a home?
