Transitions America is in the midst of transition. The inauguration of President Obama has captured the attention of not only the nation but the entire world has been focused on the future of The United States of America. What does the future hold? What can America expect to see and experience in the days ahead? Will the approval rating continue to swell as anticipation fills the hearts of millions? This is not only an hour for action from politicians, but a mandate for the Church to respond. Believers should be filled with hope as voices are lifted in prayer for our President and our elected officials. The Church is not called to an hour of criticism but instead to a lifestyle of intercessory prayer. In the midst of political changes, economic uncertainty, and challenges at home as well as abroad, there is much being said about accountability, openness, responsibility, and effectiveness. It is easy to expect such requirements from others while forgetting to examine our own lives and actions. We often say in one manner or another that there is no higher calling in the world than that committed to a minister of the Gospel. We must remember that to whom much is given – much is required. Today’s Living Translation reads, “When someone has been given much, much will be required in return; and when someone has been entrusted with much, even more will be required.” In order to be effective, an individual’s life must be constantly under review. Those who have said Y E S to the call of God would do well to take note of the following: A minister has no greater obligation for accountability than that due to God. Too often the pressures of life, both from situations and people, dictate direction; February 2009
however, our chief focus must be to remember that it is God who demands our allegiance. At the end of the day, He is the One to whom we answer. The Word of God must be our sword and shield. A minister must be a student, knowledgeable of current events, well-read in contemporary matters, and capable of communicating with a 21st century society. However, the primary Book must be His Book. His Word must be the resource from which our speech proceeds. A life of prayer must be modeled, practiced, and evident. There should be no one more at ease in talking with God than the minister of the Gospel. God must be a personal friend and the primary accountability partner. This relationship only develops through a lifestyle based on prayer. The minister must remember “the call” and the commitment to complete the task. Regrettably, not all who accept His call are able to step across the finish line. Nothing in life – people, pressures or positions – should be able to separate us from the goal of hearing Him say, “Well done!” The first and primary individual to whom a minister owes commitment is to his or her spouse. Too many times, the one to whom we vowed a lifetime becomes neglected in the quest of being all things to all people. True ministry begins at home – and unless it is effective there, it will fail in public scrutiny. The ministry should not be the excuse given for being an absent parent. The family that God has given to a minister must become his most valued possession. Parenting is perhaps the greatest challenge given to any individual and the minister must seek to succeed in this assignment if life is to be fulfilling and rewarding.
Frank and Linda Cargill District Superintendent
The community of believers becomes the ministerial priority for the preacher. A minister’s place of service whether elected, appointed, or serving as a staff member – requires accountability and a life of service. Remember, God rewards faithfulness and serving His Body is a high and holy calling. A minister is known by his testimony throughout the community. A minister cannot neglect his own place of calling. Neither should one “hide” in the midst of the congregation. The effective minister will be known and recognized as a voice for God throughout the community. We are called to “our world” and a devoted life will be known by both saint and sinner. Time is a precious commodity and priorities must be placed on management and stewardship. A minister must not be slothful in duty, lazy in responsibility, or negligent in work ethics. Proper time management will bring honor to God and stand as a compliment to the character of a minister of the Gospel. The goal for every preacher is to finish strong. Life may bring more than one’s fair share of problems, but never should one forget the ultimate success will be to complete this life with victory, on a positive note, and confident in the conclusion. He who called – is able to sustain, strengthen, and provide enablement for every battle!

Teach Me To
Pray
Tom Goins District Secretary/Treasurer
Jesus often spoke about the role of prayer in the Christian’s life and the church. He guaranteed His presence when two or more gather in unity to pray. He also promised to act whenever believers speak to God in the authority of Christ’s name. Jesus taught that God is to be the focus of our petitions, and He showed by example that the basis for ministry is communion with the Father. If we want God to release His power into our situation, it’s important to do two things: First, depend solely on Jesus’ merits. Our new life as children of God began when we acknowledge our helplessness and accepted Christ’s substitutionary death on our behalf. He acted as our mediator and reconciled us to the Father. If we want God to do mighty works in and through us, we must continue in the same spirit of dependence on Christ. Second, separate from all known sin. At the cross, when the Savior paid our penalty from transgression, sin’s controlling power over us was broken. However, its presence remains in this world and also lingers in us. Gossip, laziness, gluttony, and selfishness are everyday occurrences. The remedy for every sin is to confess it to God, turn away from the attitude or behavior, and receive God’s forgiveness and cleaning. He will only use cleansed vessels. If we are going to make big requests of God, we must come to Him with clean hearts and hands—that is, solely on the merits of His Son Jesus.

GOD’S ECONOMY No one is left out in God’s economy. This gospel includes everyone. Joel said so (Joel 2:32); Peter said so (Acts 2:21), as he quoted Joel; Paul said so (Romans 10:13); and of course, Jesus said so as well (John 3:16). No ethnic, cultural, economic, or social group exempts one from God’s grace and love found in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The most socially rejected people have found grace in the eyes of God. Exodus 12:38 tells us, “…And a mixed multitude went up also with them…” One Bible scholar called the mixed group that left Egypt with the Hebrew children, a mongrel group. The impure and cross-breeds, who had no identification, were just as delivered as the children of Israel. How about the Samaritan woman at the well? Culturally, Jesus should not have talked to her. First of all, she was a woman, secondly, she was a Samaritan (half-blood). Not only did Jesus talk to her, he promised her living water. The New Testament notes that barriers separating us from one another have been broken down through the life and sacrificial

death of Jesus Christ (Galatians 3:26-28; Colossians 3:11). Jesus died for all people everywhere: the Jew, the Gentile, and the Palestinian; the drug user, the drug dealer and the oldfashioned alcoholic, Jesus died for all the adulterers and adulteresses, as well as the homosexuals, and even those who commit incest. He died for all the thieves, arsonists, and murderers, the gang members and war lords. Jesus died for the last, the least, and the lost; the beaten, the broken, and the bruised; the hapless, the helpless, and the hopeless. Jesus died for the AIDS victim. He died for all the prodigals. And, He died for you and me.
WHAT ’ S HAPPENING? A lot! Children, teenagers, college students, and other adults are answering the call to ministry. The young are volunteering for the hard places. Last month we returned from the World Summit in Cincinnati, Ohio where 4,000 people met to explore the spiritual needs of the world. Of this great number approximately 1,000 collegians committed themselves to give a year to missions and pray about a lifetime. Spanish ministry in Oklahoma is exploding! Our own Oklahoma School of Ministry includes 30 Spanish speaking enrollees. Missionary Mark Fitzgerald continues to receive and pursue inquiries from Spanish groups across
Oklahoma. In fact, on January 10th, Brother Fitzgerald hosted an all day meeting for Spanish speaking pastors. I certainly didn’t understand all that was said, but the enthusiasm and spirit of the coming together blessed me richly. The Volunteer Prison Ministries Network shows signs of greater involvement and growth. On January, 12th I attended the dedication of the New Hope Christian Center in Chickasha. This faith based center will provide life challenging education programs for those leaving the penal system and those needing help with chemical dependence. Chickasha First Assembly is the owner of this new facility, while Chaplain Travis Hendricks oversees its daily operation. From our volunteers across Oklahoma it has been reported that in 2008, 458 worship services have been provided with 45,484 inmates in attendance. It has also been reported that 1250 Bibles have been personally given out, and 4898 other books and materials. The total number of converts is 467. These reported numbers are conservative with many not being reported. In 2009, the volunteer prison workers will meet on each 5th Saturday. The place will be announced each time. Please call the District Missions Office or Chaplain Hendricks at Chickasha First Assembly for details. On Assignment,

Happy Birthday Buddy! The BGMC ministry was started in 1949. That means 2009 marks 60 years of meeting critical needs around the world and 60 years of teaching kids to have a heart of compassion for the lost and needy of the world. We, here at the BGMC office, are SO excited to be celebrating this BIG event! BGMC will be celebrating Buddy’s birthday during the year 2009, but the BIG day will be National BGMC Day, March 8, 2009. (Feel free to celebrate Buddy’s birthday any day that works best for you.) A BGMC birthday packet is being mailed to every BGMC-giving church. This packet includes a commemorative newsletter with lots of historical information, a flyer showing all the birthday resources that are available, a sample of the commemorative offering box that will be used during 2009, a gift from BGMC for each church, a birthday poster made for kids, an anniversary poster made for adults, and a special bookmark. Be sure to look through the resource flyer. Many of the resources to commemorate this event will only be available during 2009. Some will also have a limited supply. We are also featuring resources that you can buy to decorate and celebrate by having a big birthday party, such as a giant inflatable birthday cake with Buddy stickers, birthday hats with BGMC birthday stickers, and more. Many of the birthday resources would make great Christmas gifts for your kids and workers. Also enclosed in the packet is a free birthday DVD containing video clips and slide presentations. Show the

video clips to the kids and the adults. Use the birthday slide presentation to teach the kids about the history of BGMC. Use the project slide presentations to show the critical needs BGMC has met. The project slide presentations are also great to have running before or after church, at a banquet, or at other big events. Start planning now how you will celebrate this event at your church. Here are some ideas: * Have giant BGMC birthday party that includes cake and other goodies. * Have a special BGMC banquet. * Invite a missionary to share how BGMC has blessed their ministry. * Challenge your kids to give Buddy an extra special present by raising extra money for BGMC. * Do a special church-wide fundraising event for Buddy’s birthday. * Take up a special birthday / anniversary offering from the adults. * Include Buddy’s birthday in all of your March Missions Madness events. Take a step of faith and set your 2009 goal higher than you’ve ever done before. CALL OR EMAIL FOR INFORMATION. WWW.OKAG.ORG Go to Christian Education Dept.

Thank you to our Oklahoma women and girls who gave over $189,000.00 to the LIFE and G R O W f u n d s i n 2 0 0 8! I appreciate so much what all of you do to be Oklahoma Ladies Investing for Eternity and Girls Reaching our World. It takes both the large Faith Promises as well as the small Faith promises to make the grand total. Because of the faithful giving to these funds, I was able to help some very intentional women in El Salvador. This past October, I went on a trip with other district Women’s directors and our national director, Arlene Allen, to El Salvador. We were guests of Convoy of Hope and we were taken to several places in El Salvador where Convoy is helping children in schools and orphanages. I was impressed with what Convoy of Hope is doing to help the children of El Salvador to receive a good, Christian education. However, what touched me most were the teachers at one school we visited. We drove an hour over dirt roads to reach the school. The school was nice, but because of the location the 6

female teachers had to live at the school during the week. I could not believe their living accommodations. Six teachers lived in 2 small rooms—one room was a kitchen with a stove and table. They slept in hammocks and had no place to store their belongings. Their bathroom was a sink outside that faced the street. They had put up a sheet so they could take their “sponge” baths. The toilets were across the school yard. I looked into the faces of 6 intentional women who were willing to live this way in order for underprivileged children to have a chance not only to learn to read and write, but also to learn about Jesus. My heart was extremely touched—touched to the point that I asked what could be done to make their accommodations better. I was told that 2 more bedrooms and a bathroom could be added to the facilities and new paint for the existing rooms for $10,000.00. Because our Oklahoma women and girls have given sacrificially this past year, I was able to send $10,000.00 to them immediately when I returned to Oklahoma. The renovation should be ready when their new school year begins in March! Thank you Oklahoma women and girls!!!
