DARE TO

DREAM The Day of Pentecost witnessed thousands of people

The carnal nature cries out for immediate conformity, implemented with force and administrative authority. Human effort places a premium on success at all cost. As a by-product of subsequent behavior, the product becomes the driving force. The process suffers undue stress. The goal as the objective without regard for sensitivity to the process of the journey grieves the Holy Spirit.

The possibilities for leadership explode exponentially when coupled with the anointing and power of the Holy Spirit. The new wine of Pentecost propels vision to a height that exceeds the imagination of the human mind. Pentecostal leadership steps into the unknown and rejoices over the unseen. Leaders, possessed by Pentecost, hear voices without seeing faces. They dream dreams and experience visions.

The Spirit-directed leader, however, knows that “Unless the Lord builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted” (Ps. 127:1). When the journey becomes the objective, the pursuit gives birth to patience. For leaders, dependency upon the Holy Spirit surpasses the need for knowledge. Plans and human effort fall miserably short when compared with the miraculous timing of the Spirit of God.

responding with personal commitments to Christ. Peter, known for his reckless faith and empty promises, assumed the role of spokesman for the New Testament church. His leadership style changed from unpredictable to demonstrative. Because of Pentecost, Peter exhibited gifts far beyond anything ever envisioned.

The Holy Spirit permeates the life of the leader during strategic planning. The Spirit breathes words of wisdom and words of knowledge into the heart of the sensitive leader. As a result, Pentecostal leadership has available a checks-and-balances system because of His presence. A Spirit-filled leader relies on the inner voice that guides and directs behind the curtain of public performance.

Join me in the land of dreams. The best days for the Oklahoma Assemblies of God are yet to come!

BECOMING A REALITY

Pentecostal leadership operates with the knowledge that His goals exceed the imagination of human ingenuity. The leader takes care never to assume the credit; instead, he or she allows the Holy Spirit to reflect the accolades to the God of all the ages. “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” (Zech. 4:6 KJV). Pentecostal leadership remains aware of the people who follow. The bond forged through the priority of healthy relationships and sensitivity to human needs becomes a symbol of unity demonstrated in the Trinity by the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. People, not programs, become the thrust of endeavors and the center of affection. God’s redemptive plan is revealed as He assumes human flesh and as His passion explodes in the life of the spiritual leader. A Pentecostal leader allows time for the miraculous hand of God. Timing becomes the critical issue for the enactment of change, but reliance upon the power of the Holy Spirit provides a comfort zone. The leader understands the priority of the essential rather than insisting upon conformity based on personal agenda. Leadership operating without sensitivity demands alignment with the objective while ignoring the timing of the Creator. Pentecostal leadership never loses sight of the goal but graciously extends time for divine interaction. People giving the hand of God liberty to operate with freedom rather than with restraint provide far more significant results.

The OKAG DREAM has begun. Construction has been launched in preparation for the Solid Rock (an F5 tornado rated gymnasium) to become a reality. The general contractor’s office and supply buildings are already in place on our Spark’s Camp. Support is urgently needed!

CLUTTER-FILLED LIFE It could be safe to say for many of us that just a couple weeks

into the new year has proven to be another crowded, crazy beginning to a twelve-month journey of roles and responsibilities. It doesn’t slow down on its own. Before we realize it, the calendar is full and the to-do list is long. But there is a powerful answer to an otherwise clutter-filled year that I came across recently while reading. Over fifty years ago, catholic monk and social activist Thomas Merton wrote these profound words: “If you want to identify me, ask me not where I live, or what I like to eat, or how I comb my hair, but ask me what I think I am living for, in detail, and ask me what I think is keeping me from living fully the thing I want to live for. Between these two answers you can determine the identity of any person. The better answer he has, the more a person he is.” We can start to de-clutter our year now by how we start it. The only way to really begin to answer Merton’s questions is to obviously work backward. And, that work must come out of a well-thoughtout plan – a doable plan. You can only get done what you plan to get done. Personal strategy is critical. And, from strategy comes schedule. Map out what it looks like week-by-week, month-bymonth when you are envisioning those finished projects…and, the purpose behind those projects. The psalmist David wrote, “Commit your actions to the LORD, and your plans will succeed.” In other words, we need God to help us with our plans. And, the way we get His help is commit what we are planning to Him. But this necessitates an actual plan to commit to Him. So, this is where the process begins – identifying our plan for the new year. Here are some helpful suggestions when considering that plan:

Create a growth plan for the year. This is much different than some list of unattainable goals. Think in terms of an actual weekly plan for spiritual, mental, relational, financial, organizational growth. Write it out and refer to it regularly. Spend the first part of each day in spiritual and practical reflection. Peter Scazzero, author of Emotional Healthy Spirituality, wrote: “We know we have found our balance when we are so deeply rooted in God that our activity is marked by the peaceful, joyful, rich quality of our contemplation.” Whatever has our focus has us! Work off of a daily agenda. I know this sounds simple, but referring to a daily plan and getting the pleasure to mark “complete” on certain items of that list enables much needed celebratory moments along the way. Surround yourself with key growth-optimizers. No, these individuals are not the same as the traditional accountability partners. I do better when I get around people who inspire me to grow by how they are growing everyday. So, in other words, shake off the slackers from your life and connect with those who make growing a priority in their life. So, what are you living for this year? And, what potentially will keep you from living that purpose out in full passion? Decide now to live intentionally. Despite the everyday interruptions, tackle these days, weeks, and months with a doable plan. And, by God’s grace, we can come to the close of another year delighted in the progress.

INCOME FOR LIFE We are all familiar with the required language that is to be

placed on donor acknowledgment statements at yearend; other than intangible religious benefits, no goods or services were exchanged for these donations. By legal definition, a gift is a transfer of property from one person or entity to another without full valuable consideration. In other words, to be considered a gift the donor must relinquish control and be receiving nothing of equal value in return. This is correct, and this is the way that the vast majority of gifts are received in churches. That said, the IRS has allowed for certain charitable giving vehicles which enable donors to make gifts to charities or churches, receive a charitable income tax deduction, and receive income for life. One such vehicle is called a Charitable Gift Annuity. A Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) is a simple way for a person to make a gift to support the work of a charity and receive fixed payments for life. You did read that correctly. Make a gift today, and receive fixed payments for life.

HOW A CGA WORKS: 1. You make an irrevocable gift and execute a written CGA agreement with the charity. 2. The charity makes payments to you in regular installments for life, per the terms of the agreement. 3. Upon your death, the remaining balance goes to support the charity.

The Assemblies of God of Oklahoma Foundation (AGOKF) offers CGAs in partnership with the Oklahoma City Community Foundation. Beginning a CGA with the AGOKF is a tremendous way for people in your church to preserve the legacy of the Assemblies of God for future generations. CHURCH

CHARACTERIST IC S OF AN E FFE C T IVE

M E N ’ S MINISTRY Coach Randolph was one of the most fantastic coaches I had

We all know what happens when someone is placed into a leadership position whose only requirement is that they were willing and breathing. Placing someone in the leadership role that will put forth the time and effort to create a ministry that will serve the basic and foundational needs of men is crucial. Why? Because you not only affect the man, but their family, the church and the community!

when I was in High School. He served as the Cross Country coach and had a talent for creating amazing runners who went on to win many state championships. His success record was amazing and has made his mark known on many throughout the years. Even today, I secretly coach people who run along the road according to the foundational principles he taught us! From the very beginning he emphasized the foundational elements necessary for running and never relented from this training. While there were other elements that went into creating great runners such as strength, agility, and strategy, what made the biggest impact were the foundations. He wanted us to know how to posture ourselves to run efficiently. He spent as much time as necessary to help us understand the form of running.

You can’t excel without learning the foundational elements! I have heard it said, “Men’s Ministry is rocket science!” While that may be true for many who try to establish a healthy men’s ministry in the local church, there are some foundational elements that must be considered when pursuing this important area of ministry. Let me share a few items to consider when starting or overhauling your men’s ministry!

3.

Personal Relationships: Men want to feel connected to a brotherhood that not only understands them, but also provides the strength and encouragement they need to fulfill their role. Find ways to build relationships with the men in your church and create a bond that will be the foundation for every ministry opportunity you have. This key element must go deeper than simply agreeing on political issues, but must be the gateway to dealing with the more important elements of a man’s life.

4.

Points of Entry: Ok. This can be a pancake breakfast. But realize that a men’s ministry must go further than gathering around a meal. Points of entry (i.e. motorcycle rides, fishing trips, golf games, shooting sports) are ways to connect men with the ministry of the church. Find what the men of the church enjoy doing and spend time with them doing it. You will find that these entry points become opportunities for the men of your church to invite their friends and family.

5.

Pastor Supported: The support that a pastor provides for this ministry is monumental. Not only does it legitimize what the church is doing to reach and disciple men, but it provides the church with the focus that Men’s Ministry is a necessity! Pastors must involve themselves and invest in the ministry in order for it to thrive.

6.

Purposed Planning and Communication: Planning is the key to doing ministry well. Unfortunately men’s ministry can often fall into the category of the unimportant because we fail to plan where the ministry needs to go and how to get there. Not addressing the spiritual goals of the ministry will lead to what is easiest to plan…a breakfast. Study, plan, pray, and communicate regularly with the men in your church. Prioritizing a ministry requires planning and communication!

CHARACTERISTICS OF AN EFFECTIVE MEN’S MINISTRY: 1.

Prioritizes Spiritual Growth: Pancake breakfasts are delicious, but they cannot replace the most important element of an effective Men’s group…Discipleship. The men in our church are in desperate need of a systematic and focused discipleship to help him become who God created him to be. He must understand what the Bible says concerning his walk with God, his relationships with his wife and children, his finances and his health.

2.

Passionate Leadership: Find capable and passionate leaders who are called to invest in the lives of the men in your church.

SPI R I TUAL G I F TS Happy Spring Girlfriends! Registration is OPEN for this year’s 2019 bilingual Daughters Conference – which, will be back at The Bridge AG in Mustang, OK on Friday, September 13 – Saturday, September 14, 2019. Don’t miss it this year Girlfriends! We are expecting a SOLD-OUT crowd due to nearly reaching capacity last year. Our Special Speakers this year will be Dr. Melissa Alfaro from Houston, TX (who will also be a 2019 General Council featured speaker this summer in Orlando.) She is a powerful preacher and will surely be a crowd favorite! Then, back by popular demand Evangelist Christa Smith from San Francisco, California will be with us again. This girl knows how to “Host the Presence of God!” Register now at www.OKAG.org/ Daughters Friends, I am so excited about this year’s theme: “Unlocking Spiritual Gifts!” It will be life changing to explore and empower our women from God’s Word! My goal this year is to see hundreds of women across the State, from the youngest to the oldest - “Unlock their Spiritual Gifts!” What is bottled up inside of us? I love what 1 Cor. 12:7 (our Core text) says: “A spiritual gift is given to everyone, so that we can help one another.” Isn’t that beautiful? But many people in our churches today would argue that they don’t have ANY gifts and are sadly ignorant to the Spiritual Gifts given by the Holy Spirit to EVERY Person (see 1 Cor. 12:7 above.) Many Churches aren’t teaching on this subject matter regularly or at all and are subsequently suffering from a lack of Workers, a lack of Growth and a lack of Zeal! What are the Spiritual Gifts? • Is it just tongues, tongues and more tongues? • Is it coffee and donuts in the church foyer…just WHAT are the Spiritual Gifts anyway?

We know from scripture, there are nine beautiful gifts listed in 1 Cor. 12 but beyond that, there are also 5-fold Ministry Gifts listed in Ephesians 4:11 – The Apostle, the Prophet, the Evangelist, the Pastor and the Teacher. • • • • •

Who are the modern-day Apostles? Was that Ministry Office just for Bible times or are people walking in that mantle today? What about the Prophet? Are these just old men with long beards? Where did they go among our Fellowship? Can God use women in all of these Offices of the Church?

Of course I’m being tongue-in-cheek here but we will be asking these valid questions and MORE, in order to explore this subject matter fully and break it down. Lastly, Romans 12 teaches us there are at least five more “Gifts of Help” • Serving • Encouraging • Giving • Leading • Showing Mercy We’ve got churches FULL of people who are not plugged-in ANYWHERE and “Need to find their “Niche in ministry.” We must teach on Spiritual Gifts AGAIN Friends. So, the goal is to teach and empower every woman to go deeper in these ways. Please pray for us. Thank you Friends! *And Just a Reminder - for the last year, The Women’s Department has dedicated EVERY TUESDAY as “Prayer and Fasting Day across Oklahoma.” We are fasting (one sacrificial item of choice,) and praying collectively for our Civic Leaders, Spiritual Leaders, Churches, Cities, Families, Marriages, and especially for our Sumer Camps in Sparks, OK! We invite you to join us in asking God for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon all the above! Thank you. Honored to Serve! Susie Purkey

YOUTH

CREAT IVE ID E AS T H AT

E N GAG E Hey Oklahoma! A passion of mine during my years of youth ministry was coming up with creative ideas to engage during our services. There were times it was frustrating, but overall it was a lot of fun.

CREATE A NETWORK • Find people that will work with you. • Connect with your parents. • Connect with other youth pastors and swap series ideas.

We recently talked about this on a livestream we do on Wednesday mornings, so if you missed it, here are the notes.

CREATE THE ATMOSPHERE Were you created? Then you are creative. You don’t have to go out and find it, it’s already down inside of you.

When it comes to Creativity, put these thoughts in place:

“Creativity is simply forgetting where you stole it from!”

CREATE A PRAYER TIME FOR YOUR SERIES DREAMING SESSION When you do this, you’ll learn really quickly what is a good idea and what is a God idea.

Here are a few ideas about how to Create the Atmosphere: • Let the idea be created from scripture, not just the scripture used to fit your idea • Use the culture (be up on what is current and utilize it for God’s glory) • Don’t over utilize too many creative elements. You can overkill with creativity so be careful.

CREATE A PLAN It’s alright to plan out your series. The same Holy Spirit who functions in spontaneity is also the same Holy Spirit who can give you revelation, months in advance. I’ve seen it happen. This allows you to even more creatively plan for what you are going to say, look for illustrations and set up stage design and posters.

“Creativity is simply forgetting where you stole it from!” CREATE A TEAM • Find a Creative Person, someone who enjoys being creative, and set them loose. • Find someone who loves to devour scripture and dig the deep truths out of the Word. • Find a person who is just willing to serve. “Not too many people in ministry are more holy than the ‘Gopher’.” • Find the good, the bad and the ugly. Not just those who agree with your every thought, find some people with opinions. • Remember that in meetings like this, you can’t allow things to get personal. Be real and raw.

CHILDREN

HAPPY

NEW YEAR! On behalf of Oklahoma Children’s Ministries I trust that

you had a very Merry Christmas and that you are excited about 2019. I would also like to THANK YOU for your support of Children’s Ministries in Oklahoma. Since it’s inception, our mindset has been to serve our churches. OCM offers many opportunities through Fun Arts, Kids Camps, and PB&J Retreats. We also serve our churches through our gender specific programs of Girls Ministries and Royal Rangers. JBQ is steadily on the rise as a ministry that places the word of God into the hearts and minds of kids. I think at the center of any church or ministry should be the heartbeat of missions. Our churches in Oklahoma have always had strong support for B.G.M.C. This ministry is a phenomenal way to teach the kids to not only give to missions but to also have compassion for a hurting world. Each of these ministries have been made possible because of prayerful and financial contributions from churches like yours.

James Robert Stuart 9/6/1949 - 3/9/2019

Reverend Robert Stuart, 69, of Broken Bow died Saturday, March 9, 2019 at his home after seventeen years of heart disease due to type 2 diabetes. The son of Rev. Odell and Mildred (Angellely) Stuart, Robert was born September 6, 1949 in Cheland, Washington. Robert was a graduate of Battiest High School and on July 13, 1969 he married Linda Cupit. Robert knew he was being called to preach when he was 16 years old and became licensed in 1972 with the Assemblies of God and later ordained. He worked as a sales manager at Guthrie Chevrolet in Idabel and loved selling cars. His love for the ministry was stronger so he left the auto sales and started his pastoral ministry in 1975 at the Millerton Assembly of God. Robert pastored in Russellville, Arkansas, DeKalb, TX, Santaquin, UT, New Boston, TX, Denton, TX, Spiro, OK and Battiest, OK Assemblies of God Churches. Robert enjoyed building parsonages, remodeling the churches and ministering to his people. He was a “people person” and never met a stranger. Having to retire due to disability in 2001, Robert and Linda put in a restaurant and that became his place of ministry. Customers would come in and want to give him their prayer request and request his presence at hospitals and homes. Robert will be dearly missed by many in this area.
