SUPERINTENDENT

BE A

LIFTER

Within our Fellowship there should be something for everyone. I have always believed that it is not feasible (perhaps

not even possible) to participate in everything offered and promoted by the General Council and the District Council. However, the common plea from many asks one simple question, “What’s in it for me?”

If you are already a member, you do not need to enroll again. Thank you, for helping us by continuing to support this ministry! For those who are married I would urge both husband and wife to be active members. We have some individuals that have joined without their spouse and therefore, there is no benefit at the time of the death of their spouse.

I consider that to be a valid question but it must not be the “only” concern! There are times when a leader must consider the future of the Assemblies of God, or the advancement of the local church, or the impact on the next generation, not to mention the most important priority as it concerns the Will of God.

Then – when another member of the association dies, you will be sent an announcement and each member is assessed $2.50 per death. Think of that! Your participation by giving $2.50 enables us to extend our love and appreciation for another Minister of the Gospel who has finished this race and heard the Master say, “Well done!”

Please allow me to promote a program that I feel should be known more as a ministry.

Yes, your family will receive a “benefit” when you die – but the focus in my opinion should be on the benevolence displayed when we as a “family” say, Thanks, for a life well lived!”

OKLAHOMA MINISTERS BENEVOLENCE FUND – OMBF This ministry offers a benefit for the participant but Linda and I have been fully invested in this cause more for what it provides for others. We have personally witnessed the impact that it makes on a bereaved family or a beloved spouse. OMBF has been the only benefit available to many of our older ministers. For many it has provided an answer to prayer when faced with expenses related to a death. I wish every person that is eligible to be a member of Oklahoma Ministers Benevolence Fund would share in carrying another brother or sister during their final hour in this life. OMBF was designed to assist families and to honor another member of our ministerial family during one of the most critical times of life. It comes at one of the most vulnerable hours and every person has an appointment with such an hour. Many times I have stood at a graveside and wept with one of our ministry member’s family as they said their final goodbyes. It would be hard for me to describe the range of emotions at the moment I step to their side and place a $2,300 check in their hand as a “gift” from the members of OMBF. Often, they have said this is just what we needed! Many have responded with words of sincere, heartfelt appreciation. Others have responded with tears and an embrace that I will never forget.

Linda and I joined when we were both in our 30’s. There is little question that we will “give” far more than we will “receive” but isn’t that the message we preach? Isn’t that our reason for living? Isn’t that what Christ did for us at Calvary? Isn’t that one of the characteristics of a disciple? Thank you, for seriously considering your membership in OMBF. We need your participation in order to continue this benevolence ministry for future generations. I encourage you to be a LIFTER rather than part of the LOAD. Linda and I love this Oklahoma Fellowship! We believe that we have been called to serve the most wonderful people in the world! Thanks, for allowing us the privilege of being your shepherds. Honored to be your Pastors, Frank and Linda Cargill

How can I pay my respect to a fellow credentialed minister or minister’s spouse when death has invaded their home? First – become a member. Every Oklahoma credentialed minister and the minister’s companion are eligible to join. Enclosed with this Outlook you will find a brochure that more fully explains this ministry and an enrollment application. Each eligible person (please note that you cannot wait until after age 65 and then decide to join), should complete the form, attach an enrollment fee of $5 with each application, and return the information to my office.

CE LEBRAT I O N In 1914, our fellowship was birthed on the premise of

reaching the world together in a way that we could never do alone. Over 65 million adherents around the globe is proof that such a partnership is working. Oklahoma Assemblies of God has been on the cutting edge of this missions’ movement with some of the choicest missionaries and churches in America. Through the faithful Oklahoma giving in monthly support and project money from BGMC, STL, LIFE, and LFTL for missionary efforts, our legacy in global evangelism continues.

There is no greater time to be a part of what He is doing around the world. Please join us as we celebrate Oklahoma Missions in an experience expressed through a delicious meal, riveting media, inspiring testimonials, music, and color from around the world. Engage in this set time to rejoice in the past missions work of our district, report on present missionary activity and ministry giving, and respond for the future of doors that God is opening up for us. P R OJE CTS A N INTERVIEW WITH JOS H BR OW N

You don’t have to be in ministry for very long before you

are feeling the weight of a construction project. Budget issues, contractor issues, time delays, and stress are virtual certainties. Talk to any leader who has gone through a construction project and in short order the conversation will turn to swapping war stories. Every so often, you will come across someone who has more good to say than bad, and whose experience is more positive than negative. Josh Brown is the Executive Pastor of Operations at People’s Church located in Oklahoma City. Josh has been part of the executive leadership team of the church for the past 11 years. Chief among his many responsibilities is managing the construction and remodel projects for the multi-site church. Josh is an expert when it comes to these types of projects and he has a deep passion to help church leaders navigate these projects in a successful manner. Below is an excerpt from a recent interview I had with Josh on the topic of managing church construction projects. How many construction/remodel projects have you been involved with during your ministry? Describe some of these projects. In my 11 years in ministry I have helped design, oversee and run over a dozen church construction and remodel projects ranging from a 62,000 square foot addition (including an 1800 seat auditorium), complete remodels of an existing movie theatre and event center into church facilities, a mobile campus launch and various other remodels. What are some of the most common “avoidable” mistakes you see churches make during construction projects, and how can these mistakes be avoided? One of the most common mistakes I see in working with churches is the tendency to out design the construction budget. It makes sense to begin with the design of your project but often times the conversation about the budget gets left on the back burner until the design is complete. I recommend starting with your vision and budget. What must you have to accomplish your vision and what resources has God provided for you to accomplish your vision? It’s great to dream and have a wish lists if the Lord provides additional resources, but focusing on the priorities and the budget will help you reach your ultimate destination; a facility that helps you accomplish your vision while being great stewards of your resources. A big help in this process is to establish your construction team prior to spending much time and resources on architecturals. Having the architect and contractor in the room at the same time to speak into design and cost while you develop your plans can save time, money and heart burn.

In your experience, what are some of the most effective ways to control cost and manage construction budgets? Using a contractor you trust who can design and build your project is a good option to help you build to your budget. Setting up a clear not-to-exceed budget and sticking to that as you design and move forward with construction is one key to success. Pick a spot or two and make it POP! Your whole building does not need to have all the bells and whistles. If you pick one or two areas that you want your guests to walk in and say WOW and spend a little more of your budget there, you can get the WOW factor without the WOW budget. Don’t over design your Audio, Video, Lighting. Each church is a little different on what matters most when it comes to their AVL. Spending time discussing what matters most, and getting the high, medium and low options and understanding what you are and are not getting with each option is a great way to ensure you don’t spend more than you need to on your AVL. In your experience from the church side, what advice would you provide to church leaders when seeking out contractors, construction managers, or builders? Relationship matters. In my 21 years in the commercial construction industry both in the medical and church fields I have found this to be of greatest value. Ensuring you are working with a team that understands your vision, budget and values I believe is key. The right team will help you see blind spots and think outside of the box to build your vision in budget. What is the most critical advice would you give to church leaders who are considering a large construction or remodeling project? Take your time. Talk with people who have knowledge and experience in going through the construction process. It’s easy to get excited and want to move too quickly through the process. More times than not it will cost more and take more time if you shortcut the process and/or get the wrong team around you. If you are in the consideration stages of a construction or remodel project and would like to ask Josh a question or two you can reach him at josh@peopleschurch.tv.

CHURCH

TOTA L

COMMITMENT In the December 11, 1960 edition of The Pentecostal Evangel, Sam Cochran announced an audacious goal of raising

$20,000 to buy two million Gospels needed by missionaries in Latin America. He wrote: “This gospel literature is the ammunition that is needed to fight the forces of Communism and heathenism. Our missionaries are pouring out their lives on foreign fields to combat these evil forces and perform a work for God. The true gospel of Jesus Christ is needed by the world and the printed Gospel portion is one of today’s best tools to reach the masses. The least we can do is to provide our missionaries with this tool to help accomplish their task. Many of our faithful missionaries are carrying on great literature distribution efforts. The nationals are going from door to door in teams giving out gospel literature. Great revivals are springing up and churches are being born because of these campaigns. The cost of these little printed preachers is very small…” 56 years later, the vision that Sam Cochran had in his heart when he wrote that article, is still going strong, actively spreading the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ around the world through Light for the Lost. As I read the story of Sam Cochran’s life, I can’t help but think about the individuals who made great impacts on the evangelism of the nations through LFTL. Men who had a vision to reach as many people as possible and help missionaries, multiply their efforts around the world. We owe a great debt of gratitude to the generations who have gone before us, dedicating their lives to spread the Gospel. In 2016, Oklahoma churches raised more than $650,000 for the production of evangelism literature, which has been used by our missionary teams to reach the lost! This dedication to evangelism connects itself to the very heart of God, as it is His desire that none be lost, and that each person would have an adequate presentation of the Gospel.

In 1961, J. Philip Hogan who served as the Executive Director of the Assemblies of God foreign missions program wrote: “Surely the evangelism of this generation demands total commitment by every group in the local church.” Today, there are unprecedented opportunities for us to put evangelism tools into the hands of our missionaries to assist them in making an impact in the Kingdom. Many of these missionaries have seen God’s miraculous hand in getting them to the mission field, they now need the tools necessary to plant, cultivate, water and see a harvest of souls. Thank you to the many pastors, churches and lay leaders who have made the commitment to the spread of the Gospel a priority. Your commitment to the evangelism of the lost is greatly appreciated. You have not only made impacts on people groups around the world, but have impacted eternity with your support. As we have entered into a new year, my prayer is that God would continue to use us as conduits of His great blessings to make a difference in the eternity of others. The harvest is ripe and ready; let’s pray that God will use us for His glory. For the amount of Gospel literature that we are able to distribute is limited only by the amount of money that we can supply for the need. Please contact our office, if you have any questions or if we can assist you in casting the vision for Light for the Lost. Blessings! Chad and Nyree

CHILDREN

A ME RRY CAMP IN G

SEASON We are winding down our 2017 Kids Camp season here

in Sparks. To say it has been a great year is a total understatement. From the opening moment of the first service of Camp #1 to the final prayer of Little Radicals, we have seen the hand of God touch many young lives. We couldn’t have done it without the support of our incredible churches across the state of Oklahoma! Whether you served as a coach, support staff, executive staff or just supported us in prayer for the month of July, we pray blessing upon you for your sacrifices and hard work in ministering to the kids at camp. God Bless You! Even now plans are underway for an even more incredible camp next year. We hope that it will be MARVEL-ous and that everyone will have a SUPER time! (hint, hint) Merry Christmas in July, Dean & Joy

CHRISTMAS RESOURCES We have had a few inquiries about the Christmas resources that we used at camp. The first is a Christmas devotional for kids entitled ‘Why Christmas?’ This is a helpful devotional with Scripture readings, memory verses, Christmas carols and questions to direct your child’s heart towards God. The readings, which begin on the first day of December, are Biblical, short, and effective. This book will provide parents with the assistance they desire for leading their child to the Christ of Christmas. The other one was What’s in the Bible - Buck Denver Asks….Why Do We Call it Christmas? This resource answers questions like Why is it called “Christmas?” Why do we celebrate on Dec. 25th? What year was Jesus really born? What do Christmas trees have to do with Jesus? What about Santa Claus? Where did he come from? Which came first – Christmas or Hanukah? And which one did Jesus celebrate? What are the “12 Days of Christmas?” How does the name “Emmanuel” explain the real meaning of Christmas? This video is an incredible resource that would be valuable to any children’s pastor and parent.

G I R L S M I N I S TR I E S Let’s celebrate! September is National Girls Ministries Week and Nationwide Sleepover!

What a wonderful way to recognize and celebrate our mentoring ministry. And don’t forget Coins For Kids the national missions emphasis for Girls Ministries. I was so blessed to go to Romania in October 2016 to personally witness the mission effort at Baneasa, Romania. What a wonderful outreach to the desperately needy community. Imagine if you were all alone, with no home and no family to take care of you. Kids in Baneasa have had no place to go . . . until now. With Coins for Kids, we can help missionaries build a center where every kid has someone who cares about them.

12 | OKLAHOMA OUTLOOK

Through our project, Caring for Baneasa, we’re raising money so a new center can provide hot meals, school supplies, health classes and even a greenhouse to grow veggies. With just spare change, you can help kids learn to read, grow strong and have a chance to play on a playground for the first time in their lives. When you give to Coins for Kids, you’re helping to bless other kids with a place where they can feel safe and cared for. If we all work together, we can make sure the kids of Baneasa never feel alone again

This year has proven to be just that. The response to leader training opportunities across the state, reveals the desire to be better equipped to go on this adventure with the boys God brings into each church. Several pastors have begun revitalizing the outreach ministry of their church by starting or re-starting the Royal Ranger ministry. The calling on the hearts of the men who serve on the district staff is to bring the very best opportunities for boys of all walks of life to experience. The number of boys who take advantage of leadership training camps, shooting sports camps, Frontiersman Camping Fellowship, completing the Gold Medal of Achievement and a wide range of other opportunities shows an interest to be servant leaders and see the Kingdom of God increase! Douglas B. Martin

7/20/1970 - 6/17/2017 Reverend Doug Martin, 46 of Muldrow, Oklahoma passed away Saturday, June 17, 2017 in his home. He was a teacher at Pocola Middle School and the pastor of Lee Creek Assembly of God Church. He was the high school sweetheart and devoted husband to Karla for 28 years. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his wife and daughters. Spending hours traveling to ballgames, quiz bowl, color guard and whatever else they found to participate in. He coached not only their soccer teams but many extra teams to allow every child in the community the opportunity to play. His son-in-law, Cody, finally gave him an out to do a little fishing. He adored his granddaughter, KaLiah, who added an extra glimmer to an always smiling face. Doug preached his first message when he was seventeen.
