ATT END? With the beginning of a New Year many people devote extra
time to evaluating the past and strategizing for the future. 2017 has come and gone! Every year “seems” to fly by faster and yet, there is nothing that can be removed or added to the past. That chapter has closed. The New Year of 2018 is “open for business” and we have an opportunity to make an impact on the future! We are forced to make decisions when it comes to the calendar. There are too many voices that demand our attention; too many conferences, seminars, and events that are offered; and then we must balance local church ministry events and make a time and a place for everything. Of upmost importance, ministers should not fail to make adequate time for your family – spouse, children, grandchildren, time off and vacation. Planning the calendar can be challenging at best! Some might view their pastor as a hero action figure – a superman in human flesh. Just don’t fall for that hype! A devout disciple of Christ is admonished by Paul “to become all things to all people.” However, note the two operative words that follow: “so that by all possible means I might save some. That is a demanding task that requires the Holy Spirit guidance with the establishment of priorities. As a pastor, one cannot expect to fulfill every request or to attend every event. It means that choices must be made and a strategy must be established in an attempt to live a balanced life that brings honor to the name of Christ and to His Kingdom. Regrettably too many examples exist that demonstrate the disastrous result of those who become so occupied with the “work” of the Kingdom that they failed to devote attention to the King. And then the “district calendar” arrives! Please read this carefully as you may have never expected such words to come from me….. It is not possible to attend everything. It is not realistic to promote every event and still maintain God’s mission for the local church. On the other hand, slothfulness has no place within a minister’s schedule. Everyone can claim an excuse but a lack of planning can fall victim to laziness. The writer of Proverbs declared, “A farmer too lazy to plant in the spring has nothing to harvest in the fall.” Why attend? A bond exists between those who share a same passion and motive. Ministers of the Gospel are able to relate to others who carry the same calling. Whether it is considered as a vocation (for those whose livelihood depends on the ministry) or a bi-vocation (we have hundreds of credentialed ministers that must rely on some form of employment in order to live) there is a spiritual bond that surrounds all that have heard His voice and pursue His will.
Why attend? Attendance avoids the spirit of isolationism. Too many times, a preacher feels alone. You are not! Don’t become trapped into thinking that your ministry or your place of ministry is the only one. Break the bond and discover common ground. No one may minister to the same number of people; no one may serve a church that compares with yours; but all are striving for the same goal with the desire of hearing the words, “Well done!” Why attend? We need you! Young ministers need to see elders and glean from that relationship. Then there is the element of reverse mentoring – the older are able to glean from those younger and often even rekindle the fire of commitment and enthusiasm that came with the first time you received credentials. The answer is simple – we need each other! Why attend? No one has learned it all. How easy that is to forget. Been there; done that; bought the t-shirt. Please rebuke that spirit and never allow those words to cross your mind. To be blunt, such an attitude is a definite prelude to leadership death. God can speak through others and His Spirit can quicken your mind, heart, and soul. A minister with a closed mind has already begun the dying process – spiritually, mentally, and even physically. Why attend? As we have all heard, let’s put the shoe on the other foot. What if the people you serve practiced that in relationship to your place of ministry? What if they chose to seldom attend, never tithed but supported when they felt like it, and became nonparticipatory? We all know the answer – so be what you “wish” your people were! As a credentialed minister, District Council (April) should be at the top of your priorities, Sectional Council (February) and Fall Ministry Tour (September) should become marked on the calendar at the beginning of every year. Yes, there are many other meetings and opportunities for involvement both for the minister as well as the laity but mark the essential dates. We will all be better together! MISSIONS
E VE RY T RIBE
EV E RY N AT I ON Two audacious visions come straight out of Scripture. First of
all, what we call the Great Commission is found in Matthew 28:1920. Jesus commanded, “Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” The fulfillment of that command is painted in the heavenly prediction given to John in Revelation 7:9. He said, “After this I saw a vast crowd, too great to count, from every nation and tribe and people and language, standing in front of the throne and before the Lamb. They were clothed in white robes and held palm branches in their hands.” It is utterly astounding to know that God is that committed to our obedience that He would predict the outcome.
Christ said that we would be promised His presence and power. What an assignment we have been given. But Christ said that we would be promised His presence and power. The resources are never lacking in what God has called us to do. If anything is ever lacking, it would be our obedience. Amy Carmichael, missionary among orphans in India for 55 years without a furlough, said, “All along, let us remember: we are not asked to understand, but simply to obey.” Remarkably, we do not have to understand or even have the best strategic plans to accomplish it. All that is required of us is our unreserved obedience to this unequalled command. And, the task before us is very much unfinished. According to Dr. Greg Mundis, Executive Director of Assemblies of God World Missions, “Many sources tell us that more than 7,000 people groups have no indigenous community of believing Christians to evangelize them.” He goes on to say, “As we contemplate these staggering statistics, we realize that not just millions, but billions, have limited or no access to the gospel message.” People groups within every corner of this dark world are unknowingly waiting for the Church.

Every tribe, every nation. Sounds almost too radical and undoable. But Christ would have never given a command that could not be started or finished. So, if it is in our means to obey (which it always is), then we should obey without hesitation. And, we should obey first and foremost because He said so and secondly, because we are the vehicle for His hope. With the combination of our audacious obedience and God’s zealous commitment to fulfill His heart’s desire in the world, every tribe and every nation will know Christ!

C O NFER EN CE The landscape for running the business of the church has
changed. The days of flying under the radar and doing things the way they have always been done are coming to a close. Changes in culture and changes in legislation necessitate that we operate with integrity now more than ever. One of the most important things you can arm yourself with is accurate information. To that end, we are hosting our first Church Finance & Administration Conference. The sole purpose of this conference is to provide you with the best and most accurate information as it relates to leading the business of your church. The conference will be held at Bethesda Church located in South Oklahoma City on Saturday, March 17, 2018. The speaker for the day will be Mike Batts. Mike has an extensive resume, but some of the most notable things are that Mike is the Managing Partner of Batts Whales Morrison Lee. Mike has more than 30 years of experience serving hundreds of nonprofit organizations in a variety of ways. He has served on and chaired the boards of nonprofit organizations, both nationally and locally. Mike currently serves as Chairman of the Board of ECFA, an organization that accredits Christian organizations in the areas of board governance and financial integrity. I have been
learning from Mike for almost a decade and he always presents his material in a humorous and understandable way. He has a passion for the local church and serves as a tremendous advocate for its best interests. This day of learning is a must for Lead Pastors, SecretaryTreasurers and any other key members of your church’s financial or administrative staff. Seating for this event is limited so be sure to get your registration in as soon as possible. You can find out more about the event at www.okag.org/cfac.

ONE ANOTHER Walking the District grounds one cool December morning,
I was joined by three groups of geese. All total there were nearly 50 who were wandering along with me. Of course, they were not all that happy that I had joined them and told me so as I passed by. Despite their protest, I was content to enjoy their company while we walked. It was interesting that as I entered into the vicinity of where they were, one of them sounded the alarm that I was in the area and soon others were joining in. In fact, it spread from group to group, making sure that they all knew that I was around. While some might call it noisy, I considered it a privilege to see God’s handiwork in full display. When I came inside to write my article, I thought about the analogy that was presented in those geese (because as preachers we can make an analogy or illustration out of anything in life). These geese reminded me that God not only created us individually, but also to be dependent upon one another! Geese have incredible navigational skills as they migrate and I have always been amazed at God’s creative power to put within their nature, the ability to travel great distances, depending on the weather. At the same time, they are dependent upon one another to not only journey, but to warn of any dangers they may encounter along the way. As believers, we are dependent upon one another and on each other’s callings and gifts. Paul jumps into the deep end when he instructs the Corinthian Church on their placement within the Kingdom and the Church. No doubt, the church was experiencing what many in our local congregations across the nation face…rugged American individualism. Ok. They were not American, but the spirit of being independent is a part of our nature and can translate into our view of the Christian life. After all, we often elevate those who can go to the wilds of Alaska, live off the grid, hunt and eat wild animals, grow their own food, all while being filmed by a Discovery film crew.
Christ is sufficient for all of our needs and for the development of our Christian walk, yet Paul reminds us that we need one another. Not only to grow individually, but also corporately. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. - 1 Corinthians 12:27 (ESV) This reminder can also translate beyond the individual congregation that you serve in, to the district, to our fellowship, and to the worldwide church. We Need One Another! It isn’t too far fetched to say that our effectiveness as “The Body of Christ” is dependent upon our love for one another and our desire to see each church, pastor, leader, board member, volunteer, and congregant fulfilling their purpose in the Kingdom! When we love one another as Christ loves the church, there is no room for disdain, rivalry or competition, envy, inferiority or superiority, only love. That love that God has placed in our hearts is graphically displayed through action and not just our words. Paul wanted the church to recognize that the gifting’s in the church were not for consumption, but for giving so that others would be blessed. In other words, it’s not about what others do for us, but rather what we do for them. We fulfill what God desires for His church when it is our consuming desire to see others succeed! This coming year, I am believing for a unified effort to see that each church succeeds in fulfilling it’s purpose to be healthy and effective in their respective mission field. The Oklahoma District is fully equipped to serve the Lord, just as every church and believer is equipped. But like the local church, we are dependent on each one recognizing and honoring the gift that God has given and using it to lift one another!

On Friday night, January 19th, we will conduct 14 simultaneous dinner rallies throughout Oklahoma with the sole purpose of sustaining the work that we do. (For locations, visit okag.org/life) Many have asked exactly what we provide. Here is a small list. May I just preface this list by saying you won’t find more fruitful soil to plant your seed in, nor will you find more variety than what we have right here in Oklahoma! • •

Financial support of over 200 foreign and U.S. missionaries and their family members through birthday and Christmas love offerings annually. Housing Allowance is provided to all Oklahoma foreign M.A.s and fully appointed Foreign Missionaries. When they arrive overseas, they literally purchase everything they need to set up house and home with the money we give them. If they don’t feel at home where they are, chances are they might not stay - would you? Thankfully, we help lead the way nationally on what we do for our missionaries. Very few states in our fellowship provide more for foreign or U.S. missionaries than what Oklahoma Women do. Thank you OKAG Women! Our missionaries are constantly expressing their thanks! Africa’s Children- monthly Asia’s Children- monthly Europe’s Children- monthly AG Family Compact Services - (Includes: Hillcrest Children’s Home, Highland’s Maternity Home, Transitional Living, Foster & Therapeutic Care, Respite Care, Adoptions, Clinical Support, etc.) - monthly National AG Women’s Department - Monthly Support Freedom House Women’s Teen Challenge, Checotah, OK – monthly Sonrise Ranch Boys Teen Challenge, Cache, OK - monthly New Lifehouse Girls Teen Challenge, Disney, OK- monthly Inner City AG Church AKA: the Dream Center, OKC, OK – monthly Special Projects: Annually we choose a large project called the LIFE Project, which ranges in scope of $20,000 and up. We underwrite Girl’s Ministries by providing college scholarships to Gold Star Recipients at our annual Girl’s Celebration Crowning. An annual banquet with love offerings for our Oklahoma College students at SAGU and Evangel University and AGTS. We Host an annual Women in Ministry luncheon during District Council, Century Leadership Conference providing powerful, Spirit-filled ministry and connection for our leaders. Conduct our annual bilingual Daughters Conference for approximately 1,000 women from the ages of 12 – 65+ to facilitate spiritual growth, connection and to be mightily challenged by the Holy Spirit in their walk with God.
Whew! How are we able to sustain all of this? Through, L.I.F.E. Funds! These faith-promise pledges (made in January but not due until December 15th) are the very “Life-Blood” of our District Women’s Department to support all the above on an ongoing basis. America and the World has never been more in need of a Holy Ghost REVIVAL than now and it is because of YOU and the ladies of your Church and your generous contributions to L.I.F.E. that we can continue getting the gospel out by sustaining these viable ministries and missionaries. Thank you! We couldn’t be more grateful and are left to humbly thank God for your investment into SOULS! “The One who Plants and the One who Waters have one Purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own Labor.” I love this! Essentially that means…Some Go. Some Send. All are Equally Rewarded. (1 Cor. 3:8-9) In God’s great economy everyone has an opportunity to be a part and to be blessed. When we open our hand of what’s in our sphere of resources to God, He will automatically open His mighty hand to us. It’s an amazing master plan and you girls obviously get it! So, again, from all of us, THANK YOU for doing your part in sacrificially supporting to reach the lost. Our missionaries and non-profit ministries lead by serving, day-in and day-out and when the crowns are passed out in heaven, I’m convinced those in full-time missionary work, who have sacrificed houses and homeland for the sake of the Call, very well COULD put us all to shame…unless WE ARE SENDERS! Thank you for your support of missions and for being Ladies Investing For Eternity - They Can Go because We Give! Honored to Serve, Susie Purkey
