A true hero of the faith has been promoted to his eternal reward. D r. J a m e s C . D o d d , long time credentialed minister and former Oklahoma District Superintendent, passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2009. The Oklahoma District Council of the Assemblies of God owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to Brother Dodd and his family for their years of faithful and dedicated service. His life and legacy has left an impact on this Fellowship that will stand as a model of excellence in ministry for all who follow. James C. Dodd served as Assistant District Superintendent of the Oklahoma District for 27 years from 1953 until 1980. In 1980, he was asked to fill the office of District Superintendent, a position he held until 1983. During the 1985 General Council of the Assemblies of God, he was elected as an Honorary General Presbyter, a title he held until his death.
Combining his years of service, he was a member of the General Council General Presbytery for 55 years. Brother Dodd was Frank and Linda Cargill born on March 11, 1918 to the Reverend Burl and Rachel Ella (Bogan) Dodd in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He was the Pastor and Pastor Emeritus of the Broken Arrow Assembly of God. James and Francine Dodd became pastors in Broken Arrow in 1942 and served that church for 36 years. He was preceded in death by his dear wife of 70 years, Francine, on November 5, 2005. He is survived by 2 daughters, Jimmie Belknap, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Barbara Dodd, Boston, Massachusetts, Grandson, Keith Belknap, Jr. and his wife Jacqueline, 3 granddaughters, Kimberlee and husband Bill Nash, Candice and husband Dave Reid, Lindsay and husband Joe Mancuso, 5 great grandsons, Billy Nash and wife Sarah, Jimmy Nash, Keith Belknap, III, Bruno Mancuso, Aiden Reid, 2 great granddaughters, Christina June Belknap and Emma Isabelle Reid. Without a doubt, a great man among us has fallen. Reverend James C. Dodd was a leader far ahead of his time. His life was filled with poise, dignity, distinction, and an unquenchable fire to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He was a model for hundreds and thousands of young preachers and only eternity will reveal the impact his presence made on this world. Thank you, Brother Dodd, on behalf of the Oklahoma District Council and The General Council of the Assemblies of God for your years of service as an Ordained Minister of the Gospel. Your footprints in the sands of time will never be duplicated but hopefully often imitated.
Oklahoma Students Awarded AG Trust Scholarships Two outstanding Oklahomans - Courtney Preston, Southwest Covenant School (Yukon), and K r a g e r Tomes, Christian Heritage Academy (Del City), have been awarded $5,000 Ralph Riggs Scholarships by the Assemblies of God Trust in cooperation with the Alliance for Higher Education. Both of these young people are presently high school seniors. The scholarships awarded are granted over a fouryear period. Across the nation, there were only 10 such scholarships awarded by the AG Trust this year. The scholarships are named after the former General Superintendent Ralph Riggs. May 2009
All 10 Ralph Riggs Scholarship awardees plan to attend an Assemblies of God endorsed college or university. In its first year of existence, the AG Trust received 90 applications. Awards were determined based on academics, extra-curricular involvement, Christian service, Christian life, financial need, a personal essay and references. All applicants must earn a 3.5 GPA, be involved in an AG church, and plan to attend an endorsed Assemblies of God school directly following high school. THE KEY TO We could all use our own personal financial adviser to help us navigate the economic turmoil of our times. According to the prophet Malachi, we have one…..the Almighty God. He has a plan worked out for our fiscal security. The simple principle of Exodus 23:19 is His key to monetary blessings. In offering the first of our earnings, we acknowledge that God is the source of everything and we are completely dependent upon Him. Old Testament believers were asked to set aside merely a tithe – a tenth – of all that the Lord generously gave. Malachi equates keeping God’s portion for oneself with robbing God of what rightly belongs to Him (Mal. 3:8). The Lord doesn’t need our money, but He knows we need to give. Doing so with a generous and willing heart displays the character of Christ in our lives. Remember, Jesus is a giver who gave His life for our salvation. Generosity is a way to honor and worship the Lord. If our only expression of worship comes from the lips, we are missing the opportunity to demonstrate our love and gratitude for all that God has given us. Some of us however, find it a challenge to put the principle into practice. Although we know what the Lord has said, the thought of giving that way can cause anxiety about not having enough. Then, there may be a temptation to replace the Father’s plan with our own because His feels so uncertain. We should be careful not to let fear override faith. The problem is not with the Lord’s plan, but rather with unbelief. Fear reveals doubt that God can do what He has said He will do. The Lord promises to provide everything that is needed if we will honor Him with the first part of our wealth. Can you trust all of God’s Word? Many of us have staked our eternal security on believing what the Lord has said in the Bible about our salvation, yet some may
doubt what he says about money and His provision for us. What conflicted creatures we are. We take one part of Scripture and say it is true, and Tom Goins yet we discount another section, feeling that the Lord cannot be trusted in the area of our finances. God tells us to “test Him in this and see if He is faithful” (Mal 3:10). In giving to the Lord we have the privilege of watching Him fulfill His Word. Which is more reliable our feelings or the Word of God? Say no to fear and step out in faith. Our Father is trustworthy.

May 2009
March 29th was a great day for Newkirk Assembly of God. Pastor Charley Hudspeth and congregation honored Luther Pepper as the 2008 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year. Luther has received many awards throughout his life but expressed this was the highlight. Luther has taught for over 30 years and still has the same intensity as ever. His unique ability to bring the class into discussion, to share experiences, and yet make the lesson applicable to the student. Becoming Teacher of the Year is not an easy task. There is a nomination process which takes place within the district, an evaluation that is made by the leadership at Springfield and a process of elimination which then is compared with all of the other Districts in the nation. Regardless of the method that you may use in the process of discipleship, I would encourage you to consider those that may be teaching within the ministry of your church. We have many that have dedicated themselves to service by teaching. I feel that they need to be recognized for their accomplishments. It is a simple process to nominate them but a tremendous boost to the entire church and to the disciple The article below is an excerpt taken from “The Simple Life”, a website that provides help for all involved in the daily grind of life regardless of responsibility Here are some potential effects that can arise from doing too much. Becoming aware of these is the first step towards adjusting our life situation and priorities towards a more balanced lifestyle. * Mental Noise - Constantly thinking about the things still left to do can clutter our inner space. They become mental noise and are very distracting. * Unable to Focus - When too many things distract us, we feel overwhelmed, our focus becomes diffused, and things appear ‘foggy’ from our perspective. In this state, it’s tough to focus on our current tasks, think clearly or make fast & rational decisions. * No Personal Life - We can become consumed by all the external achievements we are trying to obtain for the prized title of success. In so doing, we can forget to experience Joy. We forget to look after our health, our personal life, and ourselves. We become unbalanced. * Exhaustion - When our energies are not properly managed, we feel exhausted and diseased in our May 2009

ministry of the church. For information concerning the 2009 Teacher of the Year, go to the website at w w w.okag.org and select the Christian Education menu. bodies. This can physically manifest in different ways. For me, exhaustion translates to lower back pain, sleeplessness and dehydration. * Self-Inflicted Guilt - When we become too ambitious, we tend to underestimate how long things will take and this will result in an overloaded plate. We commit ourselves to this overloaded plate, and set ourselves up for failure, unconsciously. When we realized that we haven’t done everything we’ve set out to do, we become subject to the guilt inflicted by our own minds. This can be destructive to our motivation and self-esteem. * Hurt Relationships - When our attention is fully occupied with too many targets, we don’t have room for other important life areas, such as developing and maintaining relationships with people. * Unsatisfied - When we have too much on our plate, we are constantly chasing after the things we haven’t done yet and forget to celebrate what we’ve accomplished. Our attention is spread out so thin, that we cannot really excel at achieving any of our goals. We become dissatisfied. Similar to selfinflicted guilt, this feeling is not conducive to healthy self-esteem. Oklahoma Outlook

May, a month to be grateful for Mothers Mothers Day is very special for me this year for several reasons. My own mother recently celebrated her 90th birthday. She is in good health, still drives her car, and plans a special event three times a year for the widows in her large church. I’m so grateful that she lives near me. She has prayed for me (and all of our family) for many, many years and I still depend heavily upon her prayers.

My own daughter, Tiffany, is expecting her first child this summer—a girl, my first granddaughter. (I have three wonderful grandsons!) Soon there will be four generations of women who are linked together; first because we are family, and secondly because we belong to the family of God. My mother, my daughter, and I have all been in ministry. It is a godly heritage. I am blessed!
