SUPERINTENDENT

T H E D RE AM...

BY FAITH! Action has moved from the conference table in the architect’s office to the future site of The Solid Rock – an F5 rated gymnasium and multi-purpose facility! On August 28th the firm of Burgess Engineering began the process of drilling soil samples to determine the depth needed for designing the foundation. A few days following, the surveyors spent the day by marking the point of references needed for digging the footing for the building. THE DREAM IS BECOMING A REALITY! Our present NEED is for financial action from those who believe in the Next Generation. There are TWO active fundraising campaigns in place – one for churches and one for individuals: WE LOVE CAMPERS – All of our churches are asked to “sponsor” their own students (ages 8-18) by setting a goal of raising $400/student. Has your church set your goal? Simply total the number of young people in your church (your last ACMR would be a great place to reference) and multiply that number by $400. Join me in affirming WE LOVE CAMPERS! OKLAHOMA STORM CHASERS – We are seeking for 1,000 STORM CHASERS that will support this project by contributing at least $1,000 each. Many have already made this commitment and contributions are being received. A large display will be placed inside of the F5 storm-rated building listing the names of those who join this growing number of individuals. ARE YOU AN OKLAHOMA STORM CHASER?

DMR - A QUIET PLACE No event in the OKAG District Calendar is more focused on the health of our ministers than the ANNUAL DISTRICT MINISTERS RETREAT. It is designed to allow participants to follow the specific instructions spoken by the Master. He urged His followers to take a break from the normal activities associated with ministry. No longer were they to carry the load of evangelism, deliverance ministry, or the pressure of an unending schedule of service to the multitude. His words were clear – STOP – “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile” (Mark 6:31 NLT). Christ’s followers had been so occupied with the King’s business that they had no time left for the King! The multitude was so great and the needs were so obvious that the disciples had neglected the basic priority of discipleship. No question that they had been busy, but while they were “giving out” they “gave out!” Unfortunately, this same story could well be told of far too many Oklahoma Assemblies of God ministers – too busy with the King’s business without sufficient time for the King! The first week of October – October 1-3 – offers a once-a-year opportunity for our ministers to participate in this biblical mandate. The Oklahoma District Ministers Retreat is not “just another meeting,” IT IS FOR YOU! Our special speakers for this year’s retreat will be Mike and Kerry Clarensau as well as Richard Hammar. We will be meeting at THE CHATEAU ON THE LAKE in Branson, Missouri. Please remember – our first session will begin at 5 PM on Monday, October 1! Our sessions will focus on the following: • Monday @ 5 PM – A Healthy Ministry • Tuesday @ 9:30 AM – A Healthy Minister • Wednesday @ 9:30 AM – Current Legal Challenges Linda and I are excited about spending these hours with our friends and family! FINANCE

P ROT E C T IN G

C H ILD R EN I recently heard attorney Richard Hammar present his Annual Tax & Legal Update for Churches & Ministries. During this presentation, there was a large section of time committed to the care and due diligence church leaders should take when selecting employees or volunteers who will be working with minors. In this talk he listed eight things churches should consider implementing when putting together a screening policy.

While all of these items cannot guarantee 100% protection, they can certainly make it much more difficult for people with poor motives to gain access to minors within your church. The absolute worst thing a church can do is to do nothing. One other important note to always remember when it comes to setting policy within your church is this; if you create the policy, you need to follow the policy. Failing to do so opens your church up to unnecessary liability.

From a risk management perspective a church’s screening and selection process should include the following items: 1. A written application. 2. An interview. 3. Institutional references. These are not personal references, rather references from other churches, schools, or charities for which the person has also worked with minors. 4. A six-month rule. You should never allow anyone to work with minors in your church who is not willing to first come and participate in the life of the church for a minimum of six months.

For a more thorough look at this training, you can purchase the resource listed below. It is a great tool to work through with your church leadership team.

Reducing the Risk (Newly-Revised)

Available at: store.churchlawtodaystore.com

5. Benchmark your policies and procedures. Compare your policies and procedures with other churches, charities, and/ or the public school system. 6. Review. You should have a periodic review of your policies with legal counsel. 7.

Two-adult rule. You should adopt a policy that prohibits one adult from being alone with one child.

8. Criminal background check. The criminal background check should consist of a nationwide search of sex offender registries, and a nationwide criminal file search.

The absolute worst thing a church can do is to do nothing. KEVIN CONNER F INANCE & O PE R ATIO NS K E VIN. CO NNE R @O K AG . O R G @K E VINSCO NNE R

Church Ministries Department, and the District Office hosted a Rural Compassion Training for 22 pastors and their spouses. It was an incredible time of encouragement, training, and resource for everyone who attended. They were able to shop for suits, shirts, and were given awesome gift baskets by the host church! Each couple walked away with great ideas and a renewed vision for their community. Thank you to everyone who made this event such a great success! We look forward to partnering with our rural churches to see them impact their communities! Chad and Nyree

CONFERENCE LADIES REGISTER NOW! 2018 Daughters Conference “Warfare Prayer” (2 Corinthians 10:3-6)

“For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.” God wants to bring back the Intercessory Prayer Warrior to His Church! Sadly, most of our Intercessory Prayer Warriors have “aged out” or gone to heaven. Who have we replaced them with? The reality is, in most modern-day churches- no one. We’ve forgotten how to really PRAY and we’re paying the price for it. It’s called Warfare Prayer and we want to teach, preach and expound upon it in every way to inspire a new generation! It’s time to bring Intercessory Prayer, Fasting AND the Prayer Room (or “Upper Room”) back into today’s church. Friends, if you haven’t noticed, the Enemy is intensifying his ground game. It’s time we “Upped the Ante” in prayer and like mighty women before us that knew how to touch God, it’s time to fight on our knees. We’re a mighty army! • • • •

Come learn what it means to be more powerful in prayer. Come learn the secret to more answers to your personal prayers. Come experience His Refreshing Wind and Fire! Come to 2018 Daughters Conference!

YOUTH

S H OW U P AN D

S H OW O U T! Last month we experienced our first National Fine Arts Festival as the new DYDs and I have to say, our National Youth Department did an amazing job! The George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston was a great location and the NYM team ran a great program.

In the 11 years I spent as a youth pastor, I got to spend four years working with a local high school as the “character coach” for their football team. There was a phrase we liked to use in the locker room before games, to encourage the guys to do their best. “Show up and show out”, we would say! And that’s exactly what the students of OYM did at NFAF, but this time it was all for the glory of God. We are so proud of all the work the students put in to each presentation and the way they represented our great state! We had four categories win National Merit (1st place): Allison Ivanoff, Christ’s Legacy Church, OKC Visual Art, two-dimensional, alternative media Braden Clapp, Fairfax Assembly, Fairfax Puppetry Solo Kylie Bostwick, Spirit Church, Bartlesville Children’s Lesson Solo Fairfax Assembly, Fairfax Puppetry Group Plus many more who placed top 10 - even a few in the top 3- in their respective categories. What we saw and experienced at NFAF made us very excited for the future of fine arts here on the district level. We walked away with great ideas and inspiration from seeing students who put so much passion and excellence in developing the gifts God has given them. We will continue to abide by the Discover. Develop. Deploy. standard that defines Fine Arts and we hope to see an increase of participants in the upcoming years! The future is bright! Be Blessed Oklahoma, Heath, Alisha, and Lincoln

CHILDREN

GETTING INVOLVED IN

OUR SCHOOLS Well, we finally made it! We are on the other side of Labor Day and summer is officially over. Each morning as I leave for the office I have to be extra careful pulling out of my driveway. Our family moved into a new house a few months ago, and there is a school down at the end of our street. Each morning I see the parade of backpacks, lunchboxes, and new school clothes march across the crosswalk on their way to school. Perhaps one of the best relationships that I had as a children’s pastor was with the elementary schools in the community that I was in. In just that one little community there were three elementary schools. I was very fortunate to have relationship with the teachers, principals, and sometimes the school board. I highly would recommend children’s pastors to get involved in their schools. It is a great way to minister and be around the kids that you minister to. I know many that want to, but don’t know how to get started. There is not a certain set of rules that you follow. All I can share with you is what I did.

BECOME A SUBSTITUTE When I was on staff as a children’s pastor, my day off was Friday. That day became my sub day. I would be on the sub list for the various schools around the district. The kids from my church thought it was really cool that their children’s pastor was going to be their teacher for the day. By taking the time to invest in the lives of the teachers and students in your community, you can open all kinds of opportunities for ministry in your community. Whether it is saying a quick prayer for a teacher who is having a bad day or just spending the day with kids you only see on Sunday, you have to remember the work you do not only will benefit the kids but will also benefit the teachers, the whole school and the entire community. It will also provide the students with positive interaction, support, and encouragement.

DROP BY TO SAY “HELLO” It’s amazing how far a quick greeting and a dozen donuts will get you when you walk into a school office. You almost instantly become great friends with the secretaries. Drop by tell them who you are and wish them a great week. Be sure to let them know if they need anything to let you know.

The best relationship I had was with the elementary schools in the community. GIVE THE TEACHER A BREAK With large class sizes, teachers can always use an extra pair of hands. Offer to come in on a regular basis or whenever you have the time.

When you invest with CEP, your money will not only earn more, it will achieve more.

cepnet.com/earnmore

HAVE LUNCH WITH YOUR KIDS A simple way to get involved is to have lunch with the kids in your children’s ministry. Kids love it when they have a guest for lunch. Teachers love it too, because it’s one more adult that can sit with the kids.
