A Jewel in Paradise The Thompson Okanagan is unlike any other region in BC, or Canada for that matter. Home to Canada’s only Desert (Osoyoos), ‘Canada’s Hot Spot’ (Lytton), the ‘Smallest City in Canada’ (Greenwood), and more commonly referred to as ‘Canada’s Playground’, the Thompson Okanagan is truly a destination for all types of travelers. Geographically, the Thompson Okanagan stretches from Valemount & Mt. Robson in the north, all the way down to Osoyoos (and the US border) in the south. This tract of land is teeming with lakes, rivers and beaches a plenty! In an area this vast, there is a tremendous opportunity to discover nature, history, culture and a whole lot more.

4 | Our Travel Experiences
In large part, the Thompson Okanagan is centrally located between Calgary, Alberta and Vancouver, BC, with some of the most spectacular highways taking you in and out of the region. Sometimes you can look left & then look right, and see forever in either direction, and routes find you travelling alongside a river, twisting and turning through a deep canyon as the valley walls climb seemingly straight up into the snow covered peaks. Both scenarios can be breathtaking to say the least. That seems to be the theme of this little slice of our beautiful country – breathtaking… The northern communities of the Thompson Okanagan are mountainous and rugged. In these parts you can hike, bike, heli-ski and white water raft to
your hearts content. One of the most fascinating adventures one could possibly experience, is taking a helicopter flight from Valemount, into Mount Robson Provincial Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and touching down near Berg Lake for a day of hiking and sightseeing. A truly unique scenario, where you will see turquoise colored waters (like never seen before!) with icebergs scattered throughout. This phenomena even happens in the summertime, as the north face of Mount Robson’s glaciers slide gently into the frigid waters. The entire Thompson Okanagan celebrates cold, dry snow for many of their winter months. While sliding around the ski hill in the springtime is an amazing experience- with sunshine on your face,
and spring snow under your feet- how could the day get any better? What if you could finish it off with a jump in the lake? There are many here that ski and swim all in the same day when the conditions are right - another rare, exciting circumstance to cross off your bucket list as you travel through the Thompson Okanagan. From Kamloops south, you will find yourself hearing people describe this area of beaches, warm waters and vineyards ‘A Jewel in Paradise’. There is a chain of major lakes that stretch from above & beyond Vernon, right down into the United States, south of Osoyoos. Many of these shorelines offer pristine sandy beaches, with little inlets and bays that are perfect for exploration by a canoe, kayak, or stand up paddleboard. Lake life is a large

part of the daily routine in the Thompson Okanagan. With so many public access points, beaches and hidden spots, it’s easy to either wade into the beautiful water for a swim, or for more excitement, go boating, rent a Sea-Doo or sit beachside and enjoy watching kite boarders slice their way back & forth across the wet, blue playground. There are many different options when it comes to playing in or around on the water. As you travel through the Thompson Okanagan, it won’t take long to notice that there are miles and miles of orchards, vineyards and farmers’ fields the further south you go. The freshest fruits & vegetables can be found at one of many roadside produce stands. If you appreciate fine foods, then the local culinary arts will surely please your taste buds, as the term ‘farm to table’ is very popular in this part of the world. If you prefer to whip up a tasty meal for you and your family & friends, or would rather have the delight of being spoiled by one of the many local world-class chefs, you are sure to find one common consistency: that all of you are using fresh, local ingredients to fine tune your gourmet delights!

Another delight that you will discover here, is the regional golf scene. Golf courses line the hillsides, valley floors and riverbanks throughout the entire Thompson Okanagan region. And these courses are not just a quick nine holes in a farmer’s field anymore. Most of the golf courses in the region have championship greens, amazing training facilities with professional staff, and clubhouses or restaurants that are often favoured by the rich and famous. It is not uncommon, as you will soon discover yourself, why the awarded “Golf Course of the Year” is frequently in the Thompson Okanagan. There are certain things that separate one region from another. Here in the golfing community, more than likely you will get to play a round through a working orchard. It sounds so simple but, it is such an unusual feeling, swinging your eight iron through a row of apple trees, forcing the ball up, over and back onto the fairway. Where else can you enjoy such a rare moment? If that doesn’t bring a smile to your face, how about playing a round on the course, while the fairways are flanked by rows of grapes from a neighbouring vineyard, while deer bounce across the green not too far from where you took your
last shot. Welcome to golf in the Thompson Okanagan. Many of the wineries in the Thompson Okanagan have planted their vines in the South Okanagan, but in recent years, vineyards are reaching up further beyond the 50th parallel and deeper into the region. Wineries & vineyards, have tapped into the agri-tourism market and have expanded their scope to beyond just grapes and wine making. There are several wineries that boast guesthouses, restaurants and gift shops that rival most international airports! More than just a few wineries, vineyards, and most recently distilleries, have been recognized and awarded on the global stage. The long hot days and cool, dry nights are absolutely perfect for growing grapes & fruit. That, combined with the magic Okanagan soil have made for some very tasty glasses of vino! There is a great selection of tour companies in the Thompson Okanagan, willing to shuttle you from vineyard to vineyard to vineyard, so that you may enjoy it all in responsibly, or as an alternative tour choice, take to the air to view the wineries by helicopter. Becoming more and more popular, are
concert presentations at local wineries. Set under a summer’s night sky, up above & overlooking the lake in an amphitheatre or terrace, a favourite band or singersongwriter strikes up and delivers an oncein-a-lifetime show. Imagine the stories you will have for your family and friends… Helicopter tour & an unbelievable concert in the vineyard, all in the same day. Every city and town in the Thompson Okanagan is rich in cultural heritage. The theme will vary from town to town, but almost everywhere you go in the region, you will discover a part of BC’s vibrant history-- whether it is the Gold Rush, Old West, First Nations or most prominently, agriculture, the Thompson Okanagan showcases them all. The region is proudly home to one of Western Canada’s largest celebrations of Aboriginal culture, the Kamloopa Pow Wow. For the naturalists, there is the annual Meadowlark Festival and Adams River Sockeye Salmon Run to view and enjoy. There is also a huge market for arts, culture and music festivals & events in the Thompson Okanagan. The newly relocated Boonstock Music & Arts Festival, Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival,

Keloha, Centre of Gravity, and of course, the annual Penticton Elvis Festival, are just a few of the many events that are enjoyed in the Thompson Okanagan. These festivals bring in major entertainers and acts, so keep your eyes open, because you never know whom you might see! Seasonally, the Thompson Okanagan has the Spring, Fall & Winter Wine Festivals, with events held across the region at hotels, resorts, restaurants, ski hills, and of course, at the wineries & vineyards. Every community has a story, some even have a quite a few. We have some good stories here which we like to proudly share and tag as #mywestsidestory. The chronicles of the community date back some 60 million years. That is when our mountain, Mt. Boucherie was formed due to a volcanic eruption. (If you have been here, you have seen it, as it is smack dab in the middle of our town. Seriously, you can’t miss it!). What a great story for you to tell as it isn’t every day that one can hike up a dormant volcano and see some pretty cool geological rock formations and ancient flows of lava. There are stories involving well known people – like when Prime Minister Stephen Harper stop by one winery unexpectedly one summer afternoon. PEACHLAND Peachland is the sweetest place under the sun to while away a summers day. Perfectly located between the larger centres of Penticton & Kelowna, Peachland is a small town with big things to offer. Turning off Hwy #97 to Beach Avenue is the ultimate ‘ah ha’ moment. There is a sense of being far away from the madding crowd, a throwback to a gentler era; the serenity of Peachland’s unfettered waterfront provides you with an abundance of experiences to refresh and relax. Peachland’s unparalleled Centennial Pathway extends for kilometres alongside Okanagan Lake and you can walk, run, rollerblade, skateboard or bike to your heart’s content. Swim Bay, life guard protected during the summer months, is great fun with diving boards and a zip line into the lake. It’s not all
about Beach Avenue though! In the hills of Peachland you will find first rate adventure (like Canada’s Highest Zip Line) and to add to that adventure, the breathtaking views will astonish and exhilarate you. A visit to Hardy Falls, nestled away on Deep Creek at the south end of town, is an exceptional treat in the fall -- to see nature at her finest, as returning salmon come to spawn in September-October. Besides being a fabulous summertime destination, Peachland can be your hub for an ‘any season’ stay. In the wintertime the walkway is the safest in the valley and magical at night. After your day trips to the various ski hills and Peachland’s own winter wonderland backcountry, plan to treat yourself in the sweetest place under the sun.

GOLF IN THE THOMPSON OKANAGAN by Steven Fable
How many times have you read or heard about how the Thompson Okanagan is a golfing Mecca? It seems to me that every article features how ideal the weather is, how long warm days that last for months at a time and are perfect for swinging the clubs. And, that the playing season is so long here that in a good golfing season you can play a round every month of the year! Playing golf with Santa in Canada can be done! Much of the allure to this region is the physical surroundings. Scenic beauty is what distinguishes us as a region. DID YOU KNOW... The Thompson Okanagan attracts world-class golfers What better way to start than by saying, “Did You Know…” that there are over 70 golf courses in the Thompson Okanagan between Valemount and Osoyoos? Give or take a few 9 hole courses and that still leaves you with well over 1000 fairways in the region, that’s right, 1000+ fairways! Sounds pretty amazing doesn’t it? So amazing, that it has attracted world-class golfers from around the globe to come here and set up shop. Fred Couples has played in the Thompson Okanagan before, participating in two Telus Skins Games and doing his own “research” on down days. He liked it so much that he partnered with Gene Bates and created The Fred Couples Signature Course at The Rise. This treasure offers one of the most spectacular golf experiences in Canada. How can you go wrong playing 250 pristine acres designed by one of the most popular players on the pro tour! The course will leave you breathless, with lasting pictures & stories for many years to come. The aptly titled Bear Course at Okanagan Golf Club, is a Nicklaus Design par 72 masterpiece, meticulously created by none other than the legendary Jack Nicklaus. With over 100 victories worldwide, and over 40 years’ experience on the

pro tour, it seems like Nicklaus Design might have a few things to offer. And, they really sank a hole in one with this golf course. Dramatically sculpted fairways cut through ponderosa pine forests and sage covered hillsides, an exceptional design that will challenge and reward you. One of the most exciting projects coming to fruition is Ponderosa in Peachland. Scheduled to open for play Summer 2015, Ponderosa lingers 500 feet above Lake Okanagan and is beautifully carved through rock and forest. The Shark himself, Greg Norman, and his team at Greg Norman Golf Course Designs consider this to be one of their greatest accomplishments. Wrapped around the base of Pincushion Mountain, the Ponderosa Golf Course is a blessed union of combining old and new. The design team updated an existing course and incorporated hundreds of acres of adjacent land to expand the fairways. This blank canvas allowed Greg Norman and crew to create a course that blends perfectly with nature and flow seamlessly from old to new. It’s easy to see how the Thompson Okanagan attracts so many from far and wide to enjoy this ‘slice’ of paradise… you just have to come play a round first.

possibilities. Ranches are also very popular in the Thompson Okanagan, and are an excellent way to experience the region. Many of these Ranches are so pristine, they would have you believing you just checked into a five-star resort. If you yearn for the great outdoors, the Thompson Okanagan is second to none and offers excellent camping in some of the most beautiful places in British Columbia. The surrounding hills and tucked away lakes & rivers, offer the quiet reprieve of a romantic getaway or a relaxed outing with friends.
