2022 ODA ANNUAL MEETING THE PREMIER DENTAL MEETING IN THE STATE OF OKLAHOMA CELEBRATING 115 YEARS OF ORGANIZED DENTISTRY
WELCOME FROM THE ODA PRESIDENT Welcome! Welcome! Welcome! It is so exciting to hold the Oklahoma Dental Association Annual Meeting in person for the first time since 2019. Last year’s virtual meeting was a huge success and offered an incredible lineup of speakers. Our members enjoyed the format, but it was missing something. The camaraderie and fellowship experienced from gathering is so valuable and important. I am really happy you are here, and I look forward to seeing you over the next two days. The lineup of speakers and events this year is expansive. We have speakers that focus on topics that will interest your entire team. Kevin Henry, MA, will focus his presentation on Dental Assistants and the valuable role they play in a practice. Karen Davis, RDH, will be presenting on the value of communication between doctor, hygienist, and the patient. Mary Hamburg, DDS, MS, is offering a Lunch and Learn that covers the scaling and root planning patient and the difficulties with patient acceptance and compliance with this therapy. Kim Graziano, RDH, will be presenting on the new challenges with infection control and OSHA in the time of COVID. The Oklahoma Dental Association is proud to partner with the Oklahoma Dental Hygienists’ Association and the Oklahoma Dental Assistants’ Association to present these timely topics. We have courses that will offer hands-on opportunities. Jessica K. Hsieh, DDS, will be demonstrating the importance of digital dental photography in your practice. Stephanie Tran, DDS, is offering a hands-on course in restoratively-driven endodontics. I hope you registered early for these two presentations, as seating is limited to maximize the hand-on experience. Jeff Puckett, Chief Investigator with the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry will offer two courses this year. He will be speaking at our Breakfast and Learn on the topic of opioid abuse and the role we as dentists play in this nationwide problem. He will also be presenting a Lunch and Learn on the topic of ethics in our profession. Both of these topics will satisfy your requirements for this reporting period. Your keynote speaker this year is Jill Donovan, Founder of Rustic Cuff. Rustic Cuff is a nationwide Jewelry Business founded right here in Oklahoma. Rustic Cuff is currently sold in over 250 locations along with a very strong, loving and loyal online fanbase. Mrs. Donovan describes herself as “Passionate” and “Purposeful” and will speak on the power of gift giving and generosity. We look forward to her team-focused session that will help kick off the Annual Meeting! The Annual Meeting Planning Committee has organized several social events to enhance our weekend together. Friday morning we will host a Morning Mixer in the Exhibit Hall, and after our courses on Friday, join us just outside the Exhibit Hall for the ODA Happy Hour. Friday evening will culminate with the annual President’s Party held in the Park House at the Myriad Gardens. I would like to personally invite you to all of these events, and you can find all the details on pages 7 – 8. Thank you to the Annual Meeting Planning Committee for their hard work. They’ve planned an exciting event. Again, thank you for being here and I look forward to seeing and reconnecting with each of you! We are brighter and better together.

WELCOME FROM THE ODAA
Welcome Back!! The Oklahoma Dental Assistants Association welcomes you to the 2022 ODA “Brighter & Better Together” Annual Meeting. We are so pleased to be seeing you all in person as we continue to make our way through the changes this pandemic has brought. Our title this year is “The Heartbeat of Every Office” and this has never been truer as we have proven ourselves as such a great asset to the profession of dental assisting. I am proud to have served as your ODAA President the past few years. I would like to extend a gracious thank you to all the ODAA & OSDA officers, board members and committee members for their volunteered time to support this organization. By you registering for these courses, you are displaying your dedication, curiosity and interest in being as up-to-date as possible with new technologies and practices. I believe you will enjoy the speakers the ODAA has lined up for you. Kevin Henry always has great topics of interest that will keep you wanting more, and Kim Graziano, all though infection control a serious but boring subject, she will be entice you to ask questions and address your concerns. We hope you will find the time to stop by the membership booth in the Exhibit Hall or the hospitality suite in the Omni Hotel! Light snacks will be provided. Be sure to ask about how you can become more involved in the American Dental Assistants Association as membership has many benefits designed just for you. Colleen Schmitt, CDA President, Oklahoma Dental Assistants Association (ODAA)

FOUNDER OF RUSTIC CUFF FULL CIRCLE KINDNESS KEYNOTE SPEAKER FRIDAY 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM EXHIBIT HALL 1 CE HOUR CATEGORY D LECTURE
@RUSTICCUFF
COURSE DESCRIPTION: There are two simple but strong words that describe Jill Donovan perfectly: “passionate“ and “purposeful”. Jill’s 2004 guest appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show ignited a change within her heart that would have a ripple effect on thousands of lives. Now, with her own nationally known jewelry business (Rustic Cuff), Donovan knows a thing or two about the power in passing gifts from one person to another. She will share what happens when you give generously to others, pursue your dreams and never give up! Author of the book, The Kindness Effect, she is often heard saying, “You truly can change your world… one act of kindness at a time.”

EVIDENCE-BASED DENTISTRY: THE GAP BETWEEN THEORY & PRACTICE COURSE OBJECTIVES: • The primary obstacles we face in fulfilling the “Evidence-Based Dentistry” mantra • Where the current literature base falls short in helping to determine best clinical outcomes • Approaches for evaluating and integrating new concepts from the literature into daily practice COURSE DESCRIPTION: While in theory we practice in an era of “Evidence-Based Dentistry”, it’s not reality. Our profession has become exceedingly myopic, focusing on laboratory and clinical surrogate markers that are limited or useless in their ability to predict clinical survival and/or success, from either a patient or a practitioner perspective. At the same time, we cling to “gold standards” for treatment that persist thanks to tradition, not science. We practice in a time of information overload, making it ever-more difficult for clinicians to identify fads from paradigmshifting concepts. However, if patient outcomes are to be our primary focus, it’s imperative to evolve our clinical practices over time to ensure we’re providing the best possible solutions for our patients.

ESTHETIC MANAGEMENT OF COMPLEX RECESSION DEFECTS COURSE OBJECTIVES: • Understand guidelines for selecting patients that are candidates for soft tissue grafting • Diagnose the indications for different types of soft tissue grafting • Become familiar with new and emerging concepts in soft tissue grafting COURSE DESCRIPTION: Evaluation of gingival margins and tissue quality are important factors to be addressed when considering highly aesthetic outcomes. Several soft tissue augmentation options exist, each with appropriate indications. Gingival grafting, used in non-esthetic areas, will augment the zone of keratinized tissue and is the most predictable option with regard to correct mucogingival deformities. Historically known as a “non-esthetic graft”, new surgical techniques offer more predictability for root coverage and color matching outcomes . Connective tissue grafts and allografts are more commonly used in the aesthetic zone as they are a minimally invasive submarginal graft. A combination of these two techniques is called a “bilaminar graft” and is an excellent treatment option for multiple recession defects when palatal tissue is limited, but necessary over prominent roots and thin tissue. This presentation will review updated surgical techniques which require modification of the gingival margin position prior to restorative or orthodontic therapy.
