THE PREMIER DENTAL MEETING IN THE STATE OF OKLAHOMA

CELEBRATING 116 YEARS OF ORGANIZED DENTISTRY

WELCOME FROM THE ODA PRESIDENT

Welcome to your ODA’s 2023 Annual Meeting right here in my hometown of TULSA! This year’s edition of the Annual Meeting is sure to be a hit, thanks in large part to each of you! Our association, and indeed all organized dentistry, is a direct reflection of our membership… AND our members are impressive! In fact, we will have an opportunity to recognize and celebrate some of those significant contributions and achievements of a few very special members and colleagues during our meeting.

The Annual Meeting Planning Committee was led by Dr. Nicole Nellis. She and the entire committee have really put together a comprehensive meeting and what a TOP- FLIGHT CE program that Dr. Richard Brown and Dr. Nellis were able to line-up. I share your enthusiasm to hear some of dentistry’s stars update us on a vast array of topics and courses. I am particularly excited to welcome my friend, Mrs. Kate Germano, as our opening speaker. Kate will captivate and absolutely get us focused and ready to begin our meeting.

Our exhibit hall will once again be the central hub of our time together. We are lucky to have so many dedicated and enthusiastic exhibitors gathered in one exhibit hall who are ready to engage and help us! You will no doubt love the Morning Mixer and Happy Hour as direct extensions of our exhibit hall. Speaking of social outings, I hope to see you all at the ODA Party on Friday night at the Vast Bank building. We have a delicious menu from In the Raw VUE along with a great signature cocktail in store for you that night. This party is for all attendees and is a bargain for such a great night. I want to thank each of our sponsors who have been quite generous in helping to make this meeting possible and standing with us as we bring together some of our state’s best for the 2023 ODA Annual Meeting!

Whether you are here for the CE, to see your friends and colleagues, to vote in our House of Delegates, to visit with vendors, just to come to some great parties, or a combination of ALL OF THE ABOVE- we are ready to welcome you!

Cheers and let the good time begin!

2023 ODA ANNUAL
MEETING

WELCOME FROM THE ODAA WELCOME FROM THE OKDHA

Welcome from the Oklahoma Dental Assistants Association!

Our theme for this meeting is Come One, Come All! ODAA has been busy working to bring an exciting and informative meeting to all dental team members.

Please join us Friday morning for “What’s That White Lesion” with Dr. Kathleen Higgins and then again Friday afternoon for the latest in “Infection Control,” with Kim Graziano, RDH, MPH.

Visit our membership table in the Exhibit Hall to meet American Dental Assistant Association and ODAA Officers and to learn more about our organization. Also plan to visit the Hospitality Suite in the Doubletree Hotel for food, fellowship, and fun.

The ODAA encourages all dental assistants to reach their full potential as dental team members. Our goal is to advance the profession of dental assisting in Oklahoma through education and encouragement for dental assistants.

Hello friends and colleagues!

The Oklahoma Dental Hygienists’ Association is honored to be part of the ODA Annual Meeting. The OKDHA is dedicated to improving the oral health of Oklahomans by maintaining high standards of dental hygiene education and practice. The collaboration between the ODA and OKDHA has been positive, efficient, and productive this year as members of the OKDHA and ODA boards have served you on various committees within the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry. We all have a common goal of improving oral health care for Oklahomans and I see that we are progressively working together to meet that goal. If you see me around this weekend, please stop me and share your thoughts and ideas for improving oral health in Oklahoma. Community service is my passion so I would love to hear about the programs you are involved in across the state.

We invite you to enjoy a meal with your RDH colleagues, and a fabulous continuing education course by Donna Wood, RDH, M.Ed. PhD on Saturday. You won’t want to miss it!

Please accept my personal invitation and join me at the OKDHA Annual Session September 15th and 16th for 12 hours of C.E. with Dr. Tom Viola and Tina Clarke, RDH, M.Ed. featured as “Teacher Tina” on social media and podcasts. Go to OKDHA.org for more information about OKDHA and the events planned for you.

Enjoy your weekend!

Tina Tuck, RDH, BSDH, MHR President, Oklahoma Dental Hygienists’ Association (OKDHA)

MORE THAN JUST TEARS OR CUPCAKES: USING BRAIN SCIENCE TO UNLOCK YOUR POTENTIAL AND STRENGTHEN YOUR RELATIONSHIPS

FRIDAY 8:00 - 9:00 AM

1 CE HOUR CBC EXHIBIT HALL CATEGORY D

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Do you make people feel stressed out? According to experts, approximately 9 out of 15 Americans suffer from dental anxiety, or “an excessive dread of anything being done to the teeth.” There is even an online support group for those who suffer from fear of having work done to their teeth! Studies show that conversations with dental staff who demonstrate empathy, compassion, and a basic understanding of the threat and reward network of the brain can significantly reduce anxiety in dental patients. These are the same traits that makeor-break relationships in any setting-- something retired Lieutenant Colonel Kate Germano learned the hard way as a leader in the Marine Corps. In this presentation, Kate, a leadership coach and conflict guru, will share research-based techniques on how you can reduce anxiety in others by communicating in emotionally intelligent and brain-friendly ways. The best news of all? What you learn during the program will not only improve how you are perceived as dental professionals by patients but make you a better leader and communicator in your other relationships, too.

CBC CONFERENCE HALL A CATEGORY B

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

- Have confidence identifying early tooth fracturing based on high level magnification

- Learn why new Class II cavity preparations and other modalities are crucial to prevent eventual tooth fracture

- Receive a blueprint for diagnosis and treatment of complete and incomplete fractures

- Understand the Fissurotomy, Calla Lilly and Overlay preparations for Class I restorations

Currently the diagnosis and treatment of cracked and fractured teeth is largely symptom based and is therefore often a sad, end stage diagnosis. The fracturing process in one of dentistry’s last great mysteries and is poorly understood throughout the generalist and specialist dental community. In this engaging and entertaining lecture, you will learn to understand and diagnose pathologic cracks utilizing magnification and other modalities, and treat long before symptoms arise or the tooth becomes unsalvageable. Dr. Clark will teach routine identification of early cracks and teach the Clark Class II saucer shaped nonretentive preparation and Fissurotomy Class I that are a significant departure from the G.V. Black preparations that are a leading cause of cracked teeth. He will share his published approach to diagnosis based on 16X magnification, step by step predictable treatment, endodontic and periodontal implications, and when to extract.

Like ultrasonics with micro tips, their use with finer size powder particles is evolving into the next treatment modality for preventative and periodontal therapy. What do you need to know about this latest technological application? How can you incorporate it into your clinical routine? How can they be used around implants? We now have Perio Classifications for Implants and so how can we use Airflow in practice? While micro ultrasonics are now considered standard of care in periodontal therapy, what else are you using them for? What technological advances have there been since you were in school or your last CE Course? Is there really a difference between piezoelectric technology and magnetostrictive units? Are there any new inserts on the market? Is there any superior way to adapt ultrasonic instruments to the type of patient in your chair?

CALCULATED HYGIENE: THE BUSINESS SIDE

- Technological assistance in efficient delivery of care

- Increasing treatment acceptance via case presentation skills

- Increasing patient understanding of dental benefit plans

- Considering utilization of assistants for optimum performance

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

COURSE SPONSORED BY:

Your hygiene department should be the force moving the rest of your practice forward. It’s calculated that approximately 60% of the productivity in the doctor’s treatment room comes from the hygiene room. Calculating how to keep the hygiene department running smoothly and efficiently will ensure the practice a healthy, long life. And the hygiene team is more than the hygienists; it includes support from the Business Team, Restorative Clinical Team, and the Dentist. In order to gain “case acceptance” from the patient and to calculate the hygiene team’s effectiveness, the whole team must understand the total Hygiene Department’s mission and objectives. Calculating optimum productivity requires understanding “the numbers” and what they mean in terms of care delivered to your patients.

SATURDAY 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM

2 CE HOURS DT MANCHESTER GENEVA CATEGORY B

Course presented by the Oklahoma Dental Hygienists’ Association

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

- Describe the way inflammation is related to chronic diseases

- Discuss how diet and exercise reduce inflammation

- Describe how oral diseases affect systemic inflammation

- List the laser components

- Understand the use of lasers in both a prophylaxis and different periodontal therapies

- Summarize the benefits of the diode laser in reducing inflammation in the oral cavity

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Seemingly every day, a new study suggests chronic inflammation is the root cause of disease. Diet, exercise and sleep top the headlines in helping to reduce this risk factor. The World Health Organization (WHO) ranks chronic diseases as the greatest threat to human health. Periodontal diseases, such as chronic periodontitis, contribute significantly to the global burden of oral diseases and share common inflammatory risk factors with other systemic and chronic inflammatory disorders. Mucosal tissues containing oral bacteria are involved in promoting a systemic inflammatory state. One of the most popular lasers used in dentistry is the diode laser. Used by a dentist or dental hygienist, the patient will receive numerous benefits of preprocedural laser decontamination to reduce bacteria in the sulcus, which prevents the start of inflammation and subsequent tissue destruction.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Management of odontogenic pain may be accomplished through a clinical approach that successfully incorporates intraoperative local anesthesia. However, improper and inappropriate use of local anesthetic agents has the potential to produce life-threatening, systemic and adverse reactions. Thus, a thorough knowledge of the pharmacology and therapeutics of local anesthetic agents is essential for their safe and effective use. This program will provide participants with an overview of local anesthetic agents commonly used in dental practice. Using case scenarios, special emphasis will be given to developing strategies and techniques essential to accurately identify the need for pain control, individualize patient care, and assess the efficacy of the local anesthetic agents

GLOBAL

DIAGNOSIS IN THE 21ST CENTURY

SATURDAY 9:15 AM-11:45 AM

2.5 CE HOURS CBC CONFERENCE HALL BN/BS CATEGORY B

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

- Global Diagnoses

- Communication with specialists

- Principles of Esthetics

- A systematic approach to facial, esthetic, and functional diagnoses

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

With the increased emphasis on interdisciplinary treatment in recent years, the deficiencies associated with traditional methods of diagnosis and treatment planning have become more evident and problematic. Historically, the treatment plan was primarily dictated by information provided by study casts which were mounted on a sophisticated articulator in centric relation. At that time in history, the primary tools available for treating the complex restorative patient were functional crown lengthening surgery and increasing the vertical dimension of occlusion. The treatment plan was simply based on restorative space, anterior tooth coupling and resistance and retention form of the final preparations, with no focus on placing the teeth in the correct position in the face. Practitioners did not have access to advanced periodontal, orthodontic, orthognathic surgery and plastic surgery tools that are currently available. With the advent and common usage of these new treatment modalities, the historical method of diagnosis and treatment planning is no longer adequately serving our profession. It is the purpose of this course to provide a systematic approach to diagnosis and treatment planning the complex interdisciplinary dental patient with a common language that may be used by the orthodontist, periodontist, and oral and maxillofacial surgeon, as well as the restorative dentist. The four Global Diagnoses which dictate all interdisciplinary treatment planning will be defined. A set of 5 questions will then be presented which will aid the interdisciplinary team in the diagnosis and treatment planning of the complex dental patient.

GLOBAL DIAGNOSIS AND DIGITAL SMILE DESIGN - A NEW SYNERGY

SATURDAY 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM

3 CE HOURS

CBC CONFERENCE HALL BN/BS CATEGORY B

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

- Understand the mechanics of the DSD concept

- Understand how to implement the DSD concept

- Understand the Global Diagnosis system

- Understand the unique synergy between the 2 concepts

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Digital smile design (DSD) is an innovative concept which allows the dentist to conceptually design the positions of the teeth and gingiva using a computer simulation. It is not only useful for the restorative dentist but also aids in communication with the specialists and laboratory technicians that will be involved in the treatment. However, one of the greatest advantages of the DSD simulation is in the communication with the patient. Using a printed cast of the simulation, a mockup can be printed and placed in the patient’s mouth or created directly in the patient’s mouth using a stint. Once the projected final outcome is viewed and accepted by the patient, the details of the treatment plan can be finalized. This is where the Global Diagnosis concepts are implemented to determine the etiology of the malpositioned teeth and gingiva and to then create a sequenced treatment plan. It is the purpose of this lecture to demonstrate the unique synergy between these two concepts.

COURSE SPONSORED BY:

3 CE HOURS CBC CONFERENCE HALL BN/BS CATEGORY B

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

- Learn an efficient technique for achieving beautiful anterior composites by restoring anatomy and surface texture in just minutes of chair time

- Learn a simple black triangle closure with no flash or overhangs. Revise and learn this technique with gingiva-colored composite for the big black triangles

- Review central and lateral anatomy and gingival anatomy to have the confidence to achieve invisible restorations your patients will love

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Achieving beautiful and invisible restorations with direct anterior composite is a challenge for many clinicians. Anterior composites are often visible due to lack of line angles, facial anatomy, and surface texture. Many of us were taught to finish with discs and cups which obliterate most anatomy and make our restorations apparent and unsightly. This course will give you the secrets to fast and predictable placement, anatomy, surface texture and finishing. Your composites will look like you spent hours of chair time, but it will only take minutes. As a bonus, you will learn an easy black triangle fix with direct tooth colored composite and a second technique with pink gingiva colored composite. Black triangles are the most common cosmetic complaint in post-clear aligner therapy for adults. Use this technique and give your patients the smiles they desire.
