ODA GUEST EDITORIAL
NEW ODA President's Message year. We can expect many challenges as well as opportunities to grow and I look forward to working together to find the best ideas and solutions.
Strategic Plan On Friday, June 2, we will meet at Twin Hills Golf and Country Club in Oklahoma City to work on developing our threeyear strategic plan. This plan is a critical element of our organization. It serves as a roadmap for the ODA as to where to focus our priorities and how we should allocate our resources for the next three years. Please plan to attend; this could be one of the most important days you volunteer for this year! 2017-2018 ODA President Juan R. Lopez, DDS I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as your President for the 2017-2018 year. I accept the honor and the privilege with great humility. My goal will be to continue the success of those presidents who have preceded me. Their leadership and outstanding contributions are truly a hard act to follow. My pledge to you is that I will do my best to ensure a productive and successful year ahead of us. Our team is composed of a talented Executive Committee and experienced Board of Trustees, and the best Executive Director in the business, Ms. Lynn Means. She and her hard-working staff are always ready and willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done! Our councils and committees are all fully staffed and are ready and eager to start a new year. So, as you can see, everything is in place to have a terrific and successful

NEW ODA BOARD OF TRUSTEES HIGHLIGHT PAUL MULLASERILL, DDS Dr. Paul Mullasseril is the newest member of the ODA Board of Trustees, serving as the 2017-2018 Secretary/Treasurer. He is a member of the Oklahoma County Dental Society. Since 2015 Mullasseril has been the Assistant Dean of Clinical and Preclinical Education at the OUCOD. He attended dental school in Mumbai, India in 1989. In 1994 he completed the Graduate Prosthodontics program at OUCOD. He completed a Fellowship in Maxillofacial Prosthetics at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas in 1996, then received his DDS from the OUCOD in 1998. "It seems backward, doesn’t it?" said Mullasseril. He was a consultant and key opinion leader for Imtec Corporation, 3M and Global Dental Sciences, and has lectured around the world for them. He is currently a consultant for Park Dental Research.
in India. Anaita has a private practice in Orthodontics in Shawnee, OK and they have two children; a daughter attending Rhodes College in Memphis, majoring in Biochemistry and Microbiology, and a son in high school. Mullasseril's role model in dentistry has been Dr. Herbert Shillingburg. "His dedication to the field of dentistry was epic," said Mullasseril. "I learned several things from him: attention to detail, never compromise on quality, and to achieve his level of success requires intelligence, hard work and multiple sacrifices." If he could have dinner with anyone from history it would be Albert Einstein. "I am in awe of people who have reached the pinnacle in their chosen careers, be it dentistry, tennis, medicine or any other profession. Albert Einstein’s contribution to science is unparalleled and to sit and talk to him would be mind-blowing."

THANK YOU, SHELLY FRANTZ!
"The ODA is quite different now than it was when I started," said Frantz. "The members built and paid off a "not-so-new-anymore" building, completed four strategic plans, and instituted the Oklahoma Mission of Mercy. Now, there's an event that has come a long way just in the past eight years!"
Frantz has worked for a professional association since she was 16 years old. She worked part-time at the Oklahoma Optometric Association during high school and college. Over the years, she learned a lot about member-based associations, leadership, advocacy and the annual meeting process. "Although I hadn't quite envisioned my life as a bookkeeper or digging through bylaws and parliamentary procedure, I found that I really enjoyed both and I've learned so much throughout the years," said Frantz.
Frantz also has been instrumental in streamlining processes. "Technology has drastically changed the way we do business and how we communicate with our members. Remember those two-inch agenda books? Now our meetings are paperless and some of them are conducted via web conference."
Currently she is responsible for the general operations of the ODA including human resources, office management, and building and grounds management. She also works closely with the Council on Budget and Finance to develop the annual operating budget. She is the staff liaison for the Board of Trustees, House of Delegates, Councils

ODA Members Trending on Social Media ODA Member and Tulsa periodontist Dr. David Wong conducted a "Periothon" on March 24. His staff approached him regarding the very long waiting list of patients and pitched to him the idea of an all-nighter. "I jokingly said 'yes' not thinking anyone would want to have gum surgery till midnight," said Wong. "Well, it only took about 36 hours for my amazing team to fill our 5:00 pm-MIDNIGHT schedule."

ODA MARKETING COACH
How to Cultivate Loyal Dental Patients Taking the time to get to know your patients on a personal level — and letting them get to know you — goes a long way when it comes to patient retention. Let’s face it, most people don’t like going to the dentist. If your chairside manner is impeccable and your dental team is friendly, your patients may actually look forward to coming to your office, which means fewer canceled appointments and good reviews on social networking sites. 7 ways to improve dentist-patient communication 1. Don’t do all the talking — Ask your patients how they are or if they’re having any problems and listen carefully to what they say. 2. Begin with an outline — Start your discussion with the big picture and work your way into more detail, asking your patient if they have any questions along the way. 3. Appeal to the patient’s values and priorities — If your patient mentions a preference for treatment, such as a long-term solution or a quicker, lowercost solution, mention that in your discussion. For example, you might say, “You mentioned you preferred a long-term solution. That’s why I’m recommending a gold crown. It’s more durable than the other choices.” While reflecting their preference, do not ignore explaining other options. Dentists should disclose all options available to a patient in order to allow the patient to make an informed decision regarding treatment. 4. Don’t refer to teeth by number — Referring to teeth by number is a big no-no in dentist-patient etiquette. Call teeth by their names and reference their location: “The very back molar on your right side.” 5. Don’t tell patients what you would “like” to do — Be direct when explaining your treatment plan. “The ideal treatment is … “ or “The 14 journal | May/June 2017
treatment I would recommend for my own family … “ is much better than saying, “What I’d like to do ...” 6. Use patient examples — Personalize your recommendation by referring to other patients who've had similar treatments. Do be mindful not to disclose identifying information when using other cases as illustrations. 7. Mention the benefits — Describe the positive aspects of your suggested treatment plan: “By taking care of your gums, you’ll have a good chance at saving those two back teeth.” 6 ways to impress your patients 1. Give the patient more than they expect — Work with your dental team to ensure that all communication with your patient is respectful and that every interaction is prompt and thorough. 2. Let the patient know if you’re running late — If you’re running behind, most patients will be impressed if you take a few seconds to poke your head into the waiting room and let them know when they can expect to be called. 3. Stay informed so you know what oral health issues or treatments are popular — Keep up-to-date on the treatments that are being talked about in the media. Your patients may ask you about a treatment they read about or heard of on television. The Science in the News section of the ADA website is a good place to start. 4. Read the local papers to find items relating to your patients — Are your patients experiencing big events in their lives like marriages, births, deaths and notable anniversaries? These kinds of events are usually documented in
the local newspaper. It would be a nice gesture on your part to send out cards to patients who have recently had a major event in their lives. 5. Provide children with a treat after (or before) treatment — Children are usually encouraged by the “treat” they will receive at the end of their appointment, such as a sticker, pencil or other item, but stick to inexpensive items to avoid anti-kickback statutes. If the procedure is particularly difficult, you may even consider letting them pick out a small stuffed animal to keep them company while they are in the dental chair. 6. Make short follow-up calls to your patients after a difficult procedure — When you call a patient at home after an invasive procedure, you’ll be seen as a caring doctor and they may be more likely to refer you to family and friends based on your one-minute phone call to see how they’re doing. Board of Dentistry
News
The Online System "Help Desk" When you call the Help Desk at the Board of Dentistry you are not calling a “different part” of the Board’s office. You are actually calling Oklahoma Interactive AKA ok.gov, a private business that created and controls our online system. This online system was made mandatory by the State in 2009, although the Dental Board did not begin using the system until 2013. If you call the Help Desk and do not get an answer and have not received a return call within 24-48 hours, please feel free to call the Board Office and we will be more than happy to open a written case/complaint that can and will be tracked by our office. With reference to the system, it is important that you understand the following information: 1. We do not have access to any usernames or passwords. 2. We have no control over the system. 3. We do understand that computers and online systems can at times be very frustrating, and we will provide as much assistance as possible to help you maneuver through the system. 4. We have no control over your renewal fee. The fee is statemandated; half of it goes to Oklahoma Interactive, the other half goes to the bank as a processing fee. 5. While you are not obligated to use the online system to renew if you choose not to, you are required to report your Continuing Education into the system in order to be in compliance. Please feel free to call our office anytime during normal business hours (M-F 8:30-4:30 excluding holidays) if you have any questions about the foregoing information.
Important Information Regarding Continuing Education Online The old information for continuing education classes completed is still showing on your online account. PLEASE DO NOT DELETE ANY ENTRIES; THERE IS NO WAY OUR OFFICE CAN RECOVER THEM. The Board is still working with Oklahoma Interactive to create a means of saving the information from the previous continuing education cycle where it is viewable by the licensee at any time in a separate format from the current cycle. However, until we can resolve this issue, all of your continuing education will have to remain showing “as is” or it will be lost into the “black hole” of the computer system. In addition, the Board has not yet completed its audit for the last cycle. Please make sure that your address in the online system is always current. Infection Control in the Dental Office Everyone needs a check-up to stay healthy. Your Oklahoma Dental Foundation is now available to help. Is your office up to date with the latest CDC Guidelines? Are you using the Infection Control Summary? In a fast-changing world of regulations, your Oklahoma Dental Foundation now offers customized, skilled, in-office Infection Control (IC) training and consulting services to assure your dental practice is attuned to the most up-to-date guidelines.
WHAT WE OFFER:
WHY WE DO IT:
LECTURE COURSES: There are two options for lecture courses. Option 1: the Comprehensive Infection Control Course. A thorough presentation of current IC concepts in dentistry. This option is designed to meet the training needs for new dental professionals. Option 2: the Infection Control Review Course. A shorter presentation designed to keep dental professionals, already knowledgeable of IC concepts, up to date with the latest research and best practices for dentistry. IN-OFFICE CONSULTING: An Infection Control Specialist will observe and work directly with staff in a hands-on approach to infection control training. Training may include creating or updating IC protocols, assisting with sterilization policies, waterline maintenance, chairside infection control, etc. A consulting session may also include group training. Consulting services will be tailored to meet the needs of your practice.
In 2003, the CDC published the “Guidelines for Infection Control in Dental Healthcare Settings.” Since then, reported cases of transmission in dental settings have been linked to failure to adhere to these guidelines. These events are devastating for the patients and clinicians involved. The CDC and OSHA Guidelines give us the information necessary to protect patients and staff. Our training and expertise in preparing your office for these guidelines will never leave you wondering if your office is handling issues properly.

LEGISLATIVE LOOP Legislative Overview & Political Update
A Voice for Dentistry in the Senate Senator Ervin Yen represents Senate District 40, which includes parts of Bethany, Nichols Hills, northwest Oklahoma City, The Village and Warr Acres. A fiscal conservative, Senator Yen’s desire to serve his fellow citizens in the Oklahoma State Senate was strongly influenced by political turmoil half a world away and his family’s subsequent immigration to the United States and to Oklahoma in pursuit of freedom and opportunity. Yen was born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1954. After the Communists took over China and several relatives on the China mainland were imprisoned, Yen’s parents, fearing an invasion of Taiwan, made the difficult decision to leave their families behind and come to America in pursuit of a better life. When he was four years old, Senator Yen immigrated to America. In 1960 his family moved into what is now Senate District 40, and he has lived there ever since. Along with his parents and two siblings, he
became a naturalized U.S. citizen at the age of 9. Yen graduated from Putnam City High School in 1973. He next earned a degree in zoology from the University of Oklahoma, and then put himself through OU Medical School. After completing his residency in 1984, he began practicing as an anesthesiologist. Dr. Yen has worked as a cardiac anesthesiologist at Saint Anthony Hospital and Integris Baptist Medical Center for more than 20 years. Senator Yen and his wife, Pam, have been happily married for over 30 years. They have five children and are active members of Christ the King Catholic Church. He is a past president of the Oklahoma Society of Anesthesiologists and past Chief of the Anesthesiology section at St. Anthony Hospital. Senator Yen has served as a member of the University of Oklahoma President’s Associates for 31 years. As a physician, Dr. Yen’s work focuses on restoring health, improving and maintaining a better quality of life, and saving lives of patients. Many of the measures Yen has authored and championed in the State Senate have been aimed at accomplishing those same goals through public policy. Senator Yen fought for passage of the state’s first law making it illegal to text and drive. Yen also coauthored a law to help raise awareness of sudden cardiac arrest, which
can instantly take the lives of seemingly healthy individuals without proper intervention. He has also authored legislation aimed at reducing skin cancer, as well as fighting for legislation ensuring higher immunization rates to better protect more Oklahoma children against dangerous and sometimes deadly infectious diseases. These efforts tie directly back into Yen’s support of legislation to strengthen Oklahoma’s budgeting process as well as promoting job creation and economic growth, noting that ever-increasing healthcare costs dramatically impacts each of those areas - he points to preventative care as the easiest and most cost-effective way of reducing healthcare costs. Senator Yen serves as the chair of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee, and vice-chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Health and Human Services. He also serves on the full Appropriations Committee, the Subcommittee on Finance, and the Senate Committee on Public Safety.

ODA MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Patel running the fourth marathon in Madrid, Spain.
Raj Patel, DDS Tulsa, OK By Randy White, Editor A journey of a thousand miles may begin with a single step, but the World Marathon Challenge begins in Antarctica. Dr. Raj Patel of Tulsa got up on January 23 and ran 26.2 miles in -30 degrees F to begin his (probably) once in a lifetime experience. In winds of up to 30 mph, he finished the first marathon in 4 hours, 12 minutes, finishing 8th. That set the tone for the Challenge; he would also finish in 7th place overall. When everyone had finished the Antarctic leg, they flew to Punta Arenas, Chile, for the South American leg. After a five-hour rest, it was back on the trail for the second marathon. In succession, the pattern was repeated in Miami, FL, Madrid, Spain,
Marrakesh, Morocco, Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, and finished in Sydney, Australia. Dr. Patel had a surprise waiting for him at Sydney’s finish line: His family and some fellow members of his church who were in Australia for mission work. Dr. Patel had run 186 miles in just under 27 hours. Asked which were his best and worst experiences, he said, “I liked Madrid the best. Conditions were perfect. Antarctica and Miami were the worst because of the conditions. Antarctica was so cold, and in Miami, we ran in 95 degrees F with high humidity. Sweating did no good in cooling my body, because the perspiration would not evaporate.” Dr. Patel didn’t even begin distance running until he was 44. Now 50, he quickly began posting times that allowed him to compete in the Boston Marathon. Not only that, but, after finishing the Challenge on a Sunday, he was back to seeing patients on Tuesday – after a fivemile run!
The first marathon took place in Union Glacier, Antarctica. The temperature was -30 degrees on the day of the race.
“It was an incredible experience, maybe the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I was drained, physically and mentally. It was worth it to
Patel crossing the final finish line in Sydney, Australia. prove the amazing endurance abilities of the human body. I couldn’t have done it without my faith. I had the Bible playing through my headphones the whole way.” This is the third year the Challenge has been run. There were 31 finishers, including US Marathon record holder Ryan Hall (whom Patel beat in 2 legs). “I’ve made some lifelong friends. I was sad that my roommate dropped out, due to injuries. I became the first Oklahoman and the first Indian to finish.” Dr. Patel, a 1992 OUCOD graduate, has maintained a general practice in Tulsa for 26 years. www.okda.org

ODA FEATURE
Tips for the New Dental School Grads As we reach certain milestones in life, we often find ourselves wondering what’s next. Graduating from dental school is no exception. While you may be happy to have your coursework, board exams and FAFSA (Federal Student Aid) filings behind you, there’s more work ahead to properly prepare for this next chapter in your life. Whether you choose to work for someone or start your own practice, here are a few things to immediately consider as you plan for your future.
Work Where You Want To Live
Make sure you can enjoy the city where you practice. If you live in Colorado but don’t like the mountains, your happiness and well-being could be negatively impacted. Choosing the right location will help start you on a positive path.
Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide
Practice the type of dentistry that will let you sleep at night. If you work for a quick dollar today, it could cost you a lot more later in life, including your reputation. It takes more money and effort to repair a damaged reputation than if you do the right thing from the start.
Develop a Team of Professional Advisers
Network with people who can be mentors both in dentistry and in business. There are people who have already forged this path and are now willing to help you navigate it. Seek their counsel, discuss your options and talk through consequences. Listen to them and learn from their mistakes. Even though the final decision is always yours (and professionals will always respect that) the best advice may not always be what you want to hear, so check your ego at the door and listen.
24 journal | May/June 2017
Plan Out Your Goals
Set goals for where you want to go in your career and where you want to take your practice. This predetermined vision not only helps you set a course but it also helps your staff become active participants to help get you there. It allows them to see your practice’s future and their future in it. Plan for your personal life as well. Your career is a factor of life, not life itself.
Keep Your Finances in Order
Know the expenses associated with running your practice. How much does that crown really cost in materials, labor, utilities, etc.? How do your customers pay? Which insurances are paying in a timely manner? What are your deposits? What is the balance in your checking account? Determine your expenses and plan accordingly. Unfortunately, fraud is also a daily factor. It may not always be in stolen cash, but in stolen items or time. Trust can be a great thing but trust with supervision is the best way to minimize loss.
Select a Knowledgeable Insurance Agent
Insurance will be of vital importance in all facets of business. It is critical that you choose professionals in the insurance industry that know the dental profession intimately and have track records of success. Pick an agent who is versed and discriminating in assessing the various insurance products/pricing in the market.
Know Your Insurance Needs
Professional Liability Insurance is required by law in Oklahoma for dentists in private practice. There are various types of policies available, such as occurrence vs. claims-made coverage. Your agent should discuss/explain all options to address your specific desires. Disability Income Insurance: Protect your greatest asset… your ability to practice dentistry. There are many different kinds of Disability Income Insurance policies. Your agent should be aware of all of them and should possess the knowledge to advise you on which policy is best for you. Life Insurance: Dentists and Physicians can be easy targets for life insurance agents that want to push a “cash value” (Whole/Universal) policy. There are times you might want or need a policy with
accrued cash value BUT most new dental graduates should just purchase Term Life insurance. If you buy a practice, open your own practice or join an existing practice make sure you are aware of and explore the other various types of insurance you will need: Property Insurance, Worker’s Compensation, Corporate Professional Liability, Employment Practices Insurance, Cyber Liability Insurance and even Business Auto or Commercial Umbrella Insurance. Also, keep in mind that most insurance policies you will need as a dentist cannot be issued instantly. Depending on the type of insurance most applications will need to go through an “underwriting” process that can take from as little as a day up to six weeks. Speak to your agent about insurance timelines before the need arises.
Get Involved
You were likely drawn to dentistry for the good you can do through it. By virtue of your profession you are now a leader in your community; find a way to use your talents for the betterment of that community. If teaching others is a passion, give back to the school that taught you. Consider working with your peers by representing others as a member of the Oklahoma Dental Association or the American Dental Association. If you are involved with your professional association, your community, and various risk management and study groups, it is projected that you will be more successful and less likely to be sued. Why? Because you will have peers available to help and share with you how to practice dentistry properly. If you have a good reputation and your community appreciates you more referrals and less complaints are sure to follow!
Pay Yourself First
If you are serious about becoming financially independent, YOU should be the first “bill” you pay each month, beginning your first month in practice, Set aside $1,000 each month (as an example) and you would soon have a nice start for a retirement account with a brokerage house. You can use it to reduce your student debt,
begin a fund for your children’s college expenses, etc. Nothing is more rewarding that having your CPA tell you that your ninth-grade daughter’s college tuition is covered! Before you develop large spending habits, you should read two books: Rich Dad Poor Dad (Robert Kiyosaki) and The Millionaire Next Door (Thomas Stanley). Take note of these truths: [1] The first million is not the hardest to make, it’s the hardest to save. [2] The average combined income of most American millionaire households is less than $100K. [3] Most millionaires do not become so by making a lot or money; they do it by saving a lot of money. [4] It’s almost impossible to become financially secure by making more and more money in dentistry. But it’s easy to do by saving and using compound interest with wise investing.
Delay Immediate Gratification
Avoid the temptation to buy expensive cars and houses, or otherwise support “rich” lifestyles early in your career, even if it appears your cash flow will cover it. The real cost of that new foreign sports car is not the amount of your payments;
it’s the difference between payments on a reasonable car versus the “dream car” multiplied by the compound interest that difference could make from the date of purchase until your projected date of retirement! Even without interest, if you saved $300 dollars/month by buying the reasonable car, over a 25-year career you will have $90K (not including interest and growth through investing)! If you work for 35 years, your savings would be $126K. And you won’t have to work harder to get it; you just have to save harder. That $1,000 you put away each month? After 35 years, you’d have $420K if you just put it in a coffee can and bury it in your back yard. A conservative investment growth rate of only 5 percent will double your money every 14 years (every seven years with a reasonable savings/investment gain of 10 percent). And once your practice gets rolling, you could adjust your monthly set-aside upwards by a multiplier of 5 to 10. Easy to do if you aren’t buying that dream home, car, mountain condo, cabin by the lake, etc. The only dreams fulfilled by that lifestyle are those of your banker, realtor, and car dealer!
Live Within Your Means
“What you can afford” is what your cash flow will cover after you’ve paid yourself first and delayed immediate gratification. It’s your gross pay minus taxes, savings, family funds, emergency fund, and monthly budget. You’d be amazed at how many “dream homes” have very little furniture in them. Happiness lives in a smaller home than you might imagine. In the latter part of your careers, some of you will go to work knowing you don’t have to. Others will continue to work long after they had hoped to retire, because they failed to save. As new graduates you should expect a “normal retirement age” to be over 70 and a life expectancy of close to 90. Given the current national budget debates, it’s likely that in the near future Social Security and Medicare will become “means tested”. Bottom line: Unless you can predict the future, hope for the best and plan for the worst. The ODA Journal gratefully acknowledges the efforts of Ms. Amy Hall (BankSNB), Mr. Joe Strunk (3000 Insurance Group), and Dr. Ed Braly (Past President, Oklahoma Dental Association) for submitting the various valuable suggestions outlined in this article.
Congratulations, New Graduates! The ODA hosted its annual Senior Signing Day on May 9. Most of the new OUCOD graduates attended and enjoyed food and fun, and most of all, completed an ADA/ODA Membership Application with zero dues. Welcome to the ODA!

Rep Dr. Doug Cox Received Inaugural ODA Legislator of the Year Award
Dr. Cox received the Legislator of the Year Award from Dr. Edmund Braly (right) during the President's Dinner on April 29.
The ODA added a new award this year – ODA Legislator of the Year. Chosen by the ODA Council on Governmental Affairs, this award is designed to recognize an Oklahoma legislator who has exhibited exceptional support for the art and science of dentistry in Oklahoma. It’s only fitting that our inaugural recipient be representative and Oklahoma physician, Doug Cox. Having served ten years in our state
legislature before terming out in 2016, Dr. Cox was instrumental in helping the ODA establish the Oklahoma Dental Loan Repayment Program in 2006, and helped us secure state funding in support of the ODF’s Mobile Dental Program each year. Dr. Cox also authored various legislation for us, including the overhaul of the State Dental Act in 2015, and served as a member of the Governor’s Task Force on Children and Oral Health in 2008. We congratulate our good friend, Representative Dr. Doug Cox!
