Lately, it feels as though the costs of practicing dentistry have been increasing every day. Many dentists I’ve spoken with have shared concerns about the rising costs of supplies and incorporating new technology. One way our association has attempted to help control costs is through the ODA Rewards Partners Program.
Turn to page 41 for a complete catalog of all our Rewards Partners!
Your ODA Rewards Partners Committee has carefully selected and endorsed more than 28 companies that offer specialty products and services with exclusive discounts for ODA members. In addition to the discounts offered to members, many of these companies participate in a revenue-sharing program with the ODA that has helped keep our membership dues down. Last year, the ODA received more than $150,000 in non-dues revenue because our members used Rewards Partners' products and services. That’s an estimated savings over $135 for each one of us! It’s a WIN-WIN-WIN relationship - it’s a win for the partnering company, the ODA, and most importantly, for each of us as members!
ODA Rewards Partners Program
The Best Value for Your Association Dollars!
journal | September/October 20226 ODA EDITORIAL
The ODA Rewards Partners Program seeks to endorse companies with a broad range of appeal. The products and services we endorse provide us with real savings (both personally and professionally). The Rewards Partners Committee is composed of member dentists from all parts of the state, as well as a dental hygienist and a dental assistant. Our committee thoroughly researches potential partners before making a recommendation to the Board of Trustees. One of the criteria we use to select our partners is their availability to our members statewide. We seek companies that are enthusiastic about working with our members. Likewise, we want it to be easy for our members to work with these companies. Companies looking to partner with our association go through a rigorous process to ensure that the company offers goods or services we need, offers favorable member pricing and exceptional customer service, an in many cases, also provides profitable royalty sharing back to our ODA.
Matt Bridges, DDS ODA Rewards Partners Committee Chair
This year, we added Black Talon Security to help us with their cybersecurity needs. We also added Dental HQ to help us establish our own in-house membership plans. We also continue to save by taking advantage of the more than 60,000 products offered through TheODASupplySource.RewardsPartners
Program reduces our business and personal expenses while allowing the ODA to keep dues down and benefits up. Check out the Rewards Partners catalog beginning on page 41!

During the Oklahoma Society of Association Executives Annual Conference in June, our very own Executive Director, Lynn Means, was awarded the Oklahoma Society of Association Executives Association Professional of the Year Award. This award is presented to recognize outstanding accomplishments in association management as well as significant contributions to the association community. Congratulations Lynn! We are beyond thankful for your leadership and commitment to the ODA!
The next meeting of the Board of Trustees is scheduled for November 4, 2022, at 1:30 p.m. at the ODA building in Oklahoma City. Any member with questions or concerns for the Board may contact their component trustee.
Per the two-year notice required in the Oklahoma Mission of Mercy (OkMOM) charter, the Board of Trustees notified the ODA partnering organizations (the Oklahoma Dental Foundation and the Delta Dental Oral Health Foundation) that the ODA will not renew their contracts in 2025. The ODA will develop and execute a new contract to partner with the Oklahoma Dental Foundation for the 2025 OkMOM in Tulsa, for management of funds and fundraising to match a private gift of $488,000 from an anonymous ODA member dentist and spouse. Each Board member pledged to support the campaign with all funds to be raised by June 30, 2023. Lawton will be the location of the 2024 Oklahoma Mission of Mercy.

One hundred percent of the ODA Board of Trustees have already made their pledge to the campaign, and we are asking you to please join them by making your monthly, quarterly, or annual pledge—or your one-time gift—to the OkMOM Legacy Fund. Every dollar you give will be doubled by the matching gift, helping us reach our initial goal of $896,000 and laying a solid foundation for the future of OkMOM.
Again, we ask you to join the legacy now by making your monthly, quarterly, annual, or one-time gift. Please help ensure essential dental care continues to be provided each year during the Oklahoma Mission of Mercy!
Since its inception in 2010, the Oklahoma Mission of Mercy (OkMOM) has been the most significant dental outreach event in our state. Thousands of dental professionals have come together over the years to provide essential dental care to Oklahomans. Volunteer dentists, specialists, hygienists, assistants, and students have treated 17,381 patients and provided more than $14.2 million in donated dental care. While the treatment is donated, there is still a substantial cost of $150,000 -$200,000 to operate the event each year.
HELP ENSURE ESSENTIAL DENTAL CARE CONTINUES IN 2025 & BEYOND!
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR GENEROSITY! JOIN THE LEGACY & DONATE TODAY Use your smartphone’s camera to scan this QR code and make your pledge or donation online.
The OkMOM Legacy Fund was established in July 2022 to ensure essential dental care is provided to patients in need during the 2025 OkMOM event and beyond. Please join us by making a pledge or onetime gift and help us secure the future of this life-changing event!
The Oklahoma Dental Association/Oklahoma Dental Foundation has received an incredibly generous gift from an anonymous ODA member and spouse who are committed to ensuring OkMOM continues well into the future. The $448,000 donation is being made as a dollar-for-dollar matching challenge, to be completed by June 30, 2023. This matching gift campaign will be the foundation for the new OkMOM Legacy Fund and will be the funding source for the 2025 OkMOM event and beyond.

• LOOK CLOSELY AT ALL OF YOUR OPTIONS! Sometimes, for just a few dollars more, you can get $500 or $1,000 more in benefits per year. Ask questions and make an informed decision!
Important Information for Your Public Employee Patients
If you are a Public Employee, please ask me about youroptions!insurance
• DENTAL INSURANCE IS NOT LIKE MEDICAL INSURANCE.
Sample
Dental insurance is more like a prepaid gift card or phone card. Your dental insurance has a maximum allowable per year, and when it is spent, it is spent. So it is very important to familiarize yourself with all of the dental insurance options available to you in order to get the most “bang for your buck”.
This information will help your patients make educated decisions about their health insurance. If you need help making a poster, contact the ODA at 800.876.8890.
• STAY INFORMED ABOUT HOW MUCH OF YOUR DENTAL INSURANCE YOU HAVE USED. Don’t let your dental benefits go to waste by not using them all before the year ends. Your oral health is just as important as your overall health. Dental insurance is a benefit to you as a public employee, and you should use 100% of it every year in order to maintain your and your family’s oral health.
• BE SURE AND MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE REGARDING COVERAGE FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. For example, regarding referrals to specialists for orthodontics or root canals, some dental insurance plans don’t cover these services, and some do.
• MAKE SURE YOU EVALUATE YOUR COVERAGE EVERY YEAR. Your enrollment/renewal period is in October, and you can make changes during that time. Benefits and coverage within the same plan may change from year to year, and if you don’t stay informed, your benefits could decrease or even change so much that they no longer meet your and your family’s dental needs.
The ODA recommends that you display a poster in your waiting area or at your front-desk checkout window to help better inform your patients who are public employees about dental insurance and options that may be available to them and their families. Below are some “talking points” that may assist you and your office staff when discussing dental insurance with your public employee patients.

LEGISLATIVE LOOP
“Einsteinshortages.stated that insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. We have given Republicans and Democrats multiple chances to improve our state, and it appears to only be getting worse. These specific candidates have been given chances to fix things and haven’t. The only logical decision is to try something different, and vote outside the box. Vote Libertarian,” Bruno remarked.
He’s lived in Oklahoma since 1959 and attended Oklahoma public schools. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Oklahoma, completing medical school and his residency there.
THINGS THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO DR. YEN: He believes that we need to make healthcare more accessible for all Oklahomans. He would like to work directly with delegation to lower the cost of prescription drugs. He’d also like to offer incentives to get Oklahomans healthier in general. Ervin Yen
WHO ARE HIS VOTERS?: There are currently 400,000 registered Independents in the state of Oklahoma, a statistic that seems to shock most people. Dr. Yen is a Moderate Conservative; therefore his political ideas on everything from healthcare and gun control to education appeal to Oklahoma Republicans.
Could Oklahoma elect the first Libertarian Governor?

Dr. Ervin Yen is the Independent Candidate for Governor running against Joy Hoffmeister and the incumbent, Governor Stitt.

Dr. Yen is unapologetically and unequivocally pro-choice. He has called the current administration's “ban on abortion” nothing short of “insane” and states that, as a doctor and a Governor, he will do anything he can to help fix this issue. This may start with ensuring that the morning after pill is accessible to all women in our state as well as helping women travel to neighboring states, if necessary.

This appeals to a significant number of voters, especially considering the incredible amount of divisiveness both parties have propagated. The Yen Campaign voter base of registered Independents is 400,000 strong. The majority of Republicans and Democrats are deeply unsatisfied with their party and believe this is the first time in our state’s history an Independent can win this election.

He’s passionate about fixing our education system and believes that we need to spend a portion of the federal funding that we have received to help students who are behind in school due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He is a proponent of raising teachers’ salaries and believes that one way we can do this is by consolidating certain school districts in an effort to decrease administrative costs and reallocate those funds to the teachers.

In addition, his campaign is focused on helping Oklahomans understand what a true Oklahoma “Independent” is. It’s not considered a political party in Oklahoma. An Independent is merely a registered voter—or candidate—who is not affiliated with any political party or their messaging. This also means that Independents are not bound by any political agenda.
He is adamant about mending our relationships with the tribes across our state and has vowed to implement a new government role for a tribal liaison in his cabinet. This liaison will protect the future interest of all tribes in our state long after his Governorship.
Dr. Yen is the only Moderate Conservative in this race who is going to bring back some common sense and integrity to Oklahoma! Learn more about Dr. Ervin Yen by visiting yen4gov.com

CAMPAIGN STRATEGY: Dr. Yen’s campaign is beginning with educating Oklahomans across our state on the simple reality that all registered voters in the state, regardless of their political affiliation, can vote for him for Governor on November 8. You do not have to be among the 400,000 registered Independents in the state to vote for the Independent Candidate. Most people do not realize this, and this makes education key.
He is a gun owner who is adamant about our right to bear arms; however, he is equally passionate about tightening our gun laws.

DENPAC funds our voice. Without our input, legislators are merely making decisions based on what sounds good, what makes the fewest people angry, or what is easiest for them. Whether you like it or not, the campaign contributions we make to dentistry-friendly candidates are what opens those lines of communication. It’s what reminds legislators once they’re in office to go directly to the ODA for information, and not somewhere else.

ANSWER #3
The other possibilities are not considered here because the odontogenic keratocyst (a) is composed of a thin wall of fibrous connective tissue (capsule) which exhibits a thin, uniform layer of luminal epithelium that exhibits a basal layer composed of cells with palisaded, hyperchromatic nuclei and a corrugated layer of parakeratin along the luminal surface. The dentigerous cyst (b) is also composed of a thin fibrous connective tissue capsule in association with a layer of luminal epithelium composed of two to four layers of non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelial cells. Inflammatory cells are usually present within the fibrous capsule. Finally, the adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (d) exhibits a thick, fibrous connective tissue capsule. This

The ameloblastoma may arise from any source of odontogenic epithelium. Approximately 17-30% are associated with the crown of an impacted tooth, usually a mandibular third molar tooth. To advise the patient that this is probably a dentigerous cyst and, unless the area becomes symptomatic, no treatment is indicated (c) and telling the patient she has cherubism and a biopsy is not necessary in order to make the diagnosis (d) would have no clinical support
The ameloblastoma is a benign neoplasm arising from enamel organ tissue which does not undergo differentiation to the point of enamel formation. This tumor has been described by Robinson as "usually unicentric, nonfunctional, intermittent in growth, anatomically benign, and clinically persistent". The first thorough description of the ameloblastoma in the literature was by Falkson in 1879.
The ameloblastoma is composed of islands of odontogenic epithelium demonstrating a peripheral layer of cells with polarized nuclei that resemble ameloblasts. The central portion of these islands is composed of loosely arranged, stellateshaped cells resembling stellate reticulum.
Ameloblastomas are treated by a variety of surgical means ranging from enucleation and curettage to block resection based upon the anatomic location and size of the lesion. Recurrence rates of 50% - 90% have been SmallREFERENCESreported.IA,WaldronCA:Ameloblastoma of the jaws, Oral Surg Oral Med Oral Pathol 8:281-297, 1955.

I spent more time than I care to admit scrolling through Instagram; there were a few accounts that had a lot of fun with acrylic paint. I’ve never considered myself to be an artist, and being colorblind doesn’t lend itself to picking colors well. After watching enough YouTube how-tos and Instagram videos, and with the support of my friends, I decided to give it a try. I had spent several months painting 5x7” panels for friends and was ready to move on to larger canvases.
The first commission was for my classmate, Sonora Zuckerman. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing! It was quite chaotic, but I found a unique peace after I had finished. Soon after finishing, the wind blew a medicine cup into the wet paint. This accident led to the trademark half-circle signature that I used on each canvas going forward. After that, I received various commissions, and they were all manageable. My hobby grew exponentially. The goal originally was to create for myself and then sell from the collection. This rarely happened, as the commissions continued to come. I was able to stay busy and try new techniques. I emphasized keeping painting solely as a hobby and did not try to focus on the business. I wanted to continue finding enjoyment and relaxation in the art without feeling stress to finish quickly. As the commissions lined up, I slowly started falling into a schedule, and it became a lot easier to field new commissions and play around with different ideas and requests. I had “painting weeks” and “stock up/seal weeks”. It became a logistical game to make sure I had sufficient support. If someone gave me pictures and colors to match or wanted a larger canvas, I would have to rely on Treyon Grant for assistance. The business side of things was very new to me, but blessed me with the ability to have a hobby that pays for itself, allows me to invest in my process, AND donate to a cause that is close to my heart. A portion of my proceeds goes to the Little Light House in Tulsa. In addition to monetary donations, I was able to donate paintings for their auction and for an auction that benefited the OU College of Dentistry's Peru mission trip. Since my recent move, it’s taken some time to set things up, but I have been able to start painting again. There’s plenty of space in the office, so I’m excited to get busy again and start filling a new space with my art!
Alex Soderfelt is a recent graduate of the OU College of Dentistry. He grew up in Owasso, Oklahoma, and currently lives in Charlotte, North Carolina. In addition to painting, he enjoys cycling, hiking, and traveling.
NEW DENTIST CORNER: LIFE OUTSIDE DENTAL SCHOOL
By: Alex Soderfelt, DDS
Dental school is filled with absolute chaos… I think we can all agree on that. When pre-dental students or DS1s ask for advice, I have always talked about the importance of having a life outside dental school. I typically recommend that they find something before school so they already have experience under their belt, but I can no longer preach that being the only option. During the spring of third year, most classmates and I found ourselves with a lot more free time than we had been accustomed to the first and second years of dental school. Some of them got jobs, some decided to volunteer more, and I decided to make messes in my garage.

On Friday, September 23, the college is offering a free day of continuing education for alumni and friends, with multiple courses from which to choose. After the free day of continuing education, all alumni are invited to the Robert M. Bird Library Patio for a happy hour in celebration of the college's 50th anniversary. “We will have food, drinks, live music, and games,” said Dr. Mullasseril. “It will be a great evening of food and fellowship.”
“The new OU College of Dentistry Delta Dental of Oklahoma Comprehensive Care Clinic opened in June,” said Paul M. Mullasseril, DDS, MS, Dean of the OU College of Dentistry. “The clinic will serve the OU-Tulsa campus and surrounding area and is the first of several OU College of Dentistry clinical extensions anticipated throughout the state.”
Visit dentistry.ouhsc.edu/alumniweekend to RSVP and get all the details!
OUCOD ALUMNI WEEKEND
The OU College of Dentistry also fulfills a substantial portion of the oral health care needs of indigent care patients, many of whom live in counties in northeastern Oklahoma and do not have access to dental care within a 30-mile radius.
The week-long celebration starts with a kick-off on Monday, September 19 with a food truck event on the OU Health Sciences Center campus. This event is free for all college students, faculty, and staff. On Wednesday, September 21, the college will host a retired faculty and staff luncheon. On Thursday, September 22, the college is excited to host its annual Dean’s Circle Dinner. This year’s event, which recognizes the college's Dean's Circle members for their generosity and support, will take place at the Omni Hotel in downtown Oklahoma City.
Concluding the weeks’ worth of events, the college will host its annual alumni tailgate on Saturday, September 24. The tailgate will be held in conjunction with Boomer Bash on the Norman campus. The game time has not yet been set, but the tailgate typically starts two hours before kick-off.

“It's fitting that both milestone events are occurring almost simultaneously,” Dr. Mullasseril said. “Fifty years ago, the college was founded to serve the people of Oklahoma, and our expansion to Tulsa meets that long-standing purpose. As the state’s only clinical education program, we have an obligation to lead the way in making oral healthcare accessible and affordable.”
In recognition of its 50-year anniversary, the OU College of Dentistry is planning multiple events to celebrate. “Please mark your calendars for September 19 through the 24 as we celebrate the return of our annual Alumni Weekend and commemorate our 50-year anniversary,” said Dr. Mullasseril.
“We have a lot to celebrate and be proud of,” said Dr. Mullasseril. “I hope you will join us for one or more of these events. I look forward to celebrating this milestone with you all this fall.”
There are so many exciting things happening at the OU College of Dentistry. In June, the college opened its brand-new, state-of-theart dental clinic located in the OU Health Physicians Schusterman Center Clinic building on the OU-Tulsa campus. Furthermore, this September, the college celebrates 50 years since welcoming its first dental class.
The funny thing is, I realize I’m only just beginning my professional journey. There is so much to be learned from a scientific and technological standpoint in dentistry.
It is so cheesy, but I do believe that you can design the life that you wish to live.
I never would have thought that being a dentist would be my easier, “go-to” answer when I meet strangers in passing. Over the years, I’ve found that running an e-commerce brand is the more complicated answer, and usually requires elaboration. The founding story of my company V Coterie dates back to the start of my third year of dental school, circa 2017, when I took on the role of President of the American Student Dental Association. (The name V Coterie comes from the letter V for my maiden name Van and Coterie which means a group of people with shared interests or taste. That group of people — healthcare workers.) ASDA was in desperate need of a rebrand in order to get our members active and engaged. So I teamed up with a graphic designer friend of mine to conceptualize a new Oklahoma ASDA logo. I turned that logo into a lapel pin to offer as an incentive to our members, and it was a hit! The process seemed straightforward enough to piggyback off as a personal project, so I taught myself Adobe Illustrator and began creating designs of my own. The designs first began as the various degrees and roles in dentistry and then branched off into more fun inside jokes and puns. It’s something I fiddled around with in between classes just to pass the time. It was not only a creative release but was also ego-boosting, almost as a way to show off dentistry as a profession — to showcase the scientific and artistic breadth of our curriculum. Things snowballed as I covered more professions, such as pharmacy, optometry, nursing, allied health, etc.
By: Lynna Van Merkey, DDS
32
Fast forward to today, and V Coterie now boasts thousands of designs and styles across a range of product lines, including necklaces, charms, rings, and key chains. At their core, the products are fashion accessories to express ourselves—within and outside our healthcare job. We are only just embarking on a time when society will see us as more than the doctor figure, the dental “professional.” Our patients want to see us being human. We are layered and complex, not monolithic. We have vast interests within and outside dentistry. We can be deeply passionate, be it one, two, or 10 hobbies. It also means allowing ourselves to prioritize self-care, downtime, rest, and our interests outside work. These things are absolutely necessary for a fulfilling life, and they make coming into work that much more enjoyable. There is a word I learned from an Uber driver: “avocation.” An avocation is any activity that you pursue when you're not at work—the things that define us outside of a Ijob.know
I think that is what keeps us on the edge of our seats, keeps us excited about the work we do. At the same time, I continue to lean into my creative entrepreneurial spirit, because creating something from nothing has its own fulfilling meaning for me. Dentistry offers a challenging puzzle, but we usually know precisely what that end goal is.
Dr. Lynna Van Merkey received her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry in 2019. She was inducted to the Omicron Kappa Upsilon dental honor society, receiving the Dr. William S. Kramer Award based on demonstrated scholarship, character, and the potential promise for advancement of dentistry and service to humanity. Lynna founded V Coterie as a passion project for creative expression during dental school. V Coterie is a niche accessories brand designed for healthcare professionals. The brand is a cheeky appeal for a departure from stoicism in medicine, inspiring creativity in a place that is traditionally cold and clinical. The company has been featured in publications including Forbes, People, Buzzfeed, PopSugar, and more.

One of the practice’s unique features is a team approach to comprehensive dentistry. The doctors meet weekly to review cases together, to ensure that the patient is receiving the best care possible. It is a time to develop and modify treatment plans together which benefits patients tremendously and levels up the perspective and knowledge of each doctor. The practice believes in collaboration, which allows the doctors to grow as providers. Each doctor has their own niche, which keeps most treatments in-house. This also ensures that the patient is in the best hands depending on what treatment is needed. The doctors complement each other with their own unique strengths. The group is also looking for an additional dentist to join the team.
Balance
Trust
• We actively protect balance in our lives by scheduling time off when needed and taking vacations.
Reflections strives to provide exceptional comprehensive care to our community in a trusting, safe environment through a team atmosphere. This is achieved through maintaining core values that are central to the practice. The core values, as voted on and defined by the entire team, are as follows:
• We demonstrate respect for our patients by being fully-present and engaged, honoring their preferences, and calling ahead if we are running behind schedule.
• We respectfully communicate information and questions with each department.
• We create a balanced schedule by strategically spacing appointments out throughout the day and week, and by allotting times for breaks.
Respect
• We trust that everyone is looking out for the best interest of the patient and of our teammates.
By: Kaylee Speer, DDS
• We pursue balance and seek to stay healthy in the most important areas of our lives, including family, friends, and work.
location was transformed from the former Union Mutual Insurance building. This office has state-of-theart technology and sanitation stations from Dentsply Sirona. Although other offices in the state of Oklahoma have Dentsply Treatment Centers, this office was the first to invest in integrating the sterilization center and the treatment center that work together. This technology is comparable to European sterilization standards, which are more stringent than typical American standards. Each treatment room has glass doors completely separating the operatories, allowing patients more privacy and safety. The treatment chairs have integrated disinfection systems, which ensure safe, efficient, and continuous disinfection. All lines to the chairs can be purged and cleaned with the push of a button. All of the systems allow for a very clean environment and seamless workflow for the patient and the treatment team. The sterilization center has hands-free features, allowing for efficiency and reduces cross-contamination. Additionally, both locations utilize MERV 12 HEPA filters with Premier One high-intensity UVC lights in all of the HVAC systems, which clean the air to hospital-grade levels.
• We respect relationships with our teammates enough to have difficult conversations when necessary.

Office ReflectionsShowcaseDentalCare(Oklahoma City)
Reflections Dental Care was established by Dr. Lance Schmidt alongside his wife, Stephanie, in 2004. Dr. Schmidt bought a small and struggling existing practice after he completed his Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry. The practice had humble beginnings with only four employees, including the two Schmidts. Today, Reflections has more than 23 employees and two offices in the Oklahoma City area. The original location is in Hefner Pointe in Northwest OKC and the newest location is at 16th and Classen near the Plaza District. The second location opened in June 2020, during the begining of the COVID-19 pandemic. Opening a new office during this time was no easy feat, but since its opening, the office has grown Theexponentially.16thandClassen

• We intentionally meet together as a team and departments to foster cohesion, balance, open conversation, and problem solving.
• We arrive to work on time, prepared, and ready to be fullyengaged in our work for the day.
• We intentionally show appreciation to others when things go right and when our teammates help us.
• We show gratitude for our team by being eager and willing to help when a teammate needs help or has a full plate.
• We are detailed and thorough in our communication, and err toward over-communicating rather than under-communicating.
• We believe that our communication success is defined by the comprehension of the recipient.
Kaylee Speer, DDS, was raised in Altus, Oklahoma. She graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science degree, and then from the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 2020. She then completed a one-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency in 2021. She has been an associate dentist at Reflections Dental Care since 2021. She is recently engaged and is looking forward to growing her family in OKC. She loves to spend time with her family and her dog, Miska, play tennis, and travel.

Gratitude
• We are open to change and to learning new things within our profession, and are constantly seeking to grow and improve our practice. We are willing to step out of our comfort zones to learn and grow.
• We recognize and encourage growth in our teammates. We are willing to help each other grow through constructive conversations, even if they are uncomfortable.

• We show gratitude for our team and patients by providing them the best options, using the wisdom and experience of all of our team members.
• Hired & Non-Owned Auto – Most dental practices have employees who may use their vehicles for business purposes. Your dental practice could potentially be named in a lawsuit or claim if an employee has an accident while running the business’s errands in their own car.
• Corporate Professional Liability
• Overhead Transmission Lines – Some BOPs allow coverage for Overhead Transmission Lines. We are all aware of the damage ice storms can cause to overhead power lines. This coverage can help recoup losses when your dental practice cannot see patients due to loss of power. This coverage allows the Business Income portion of your policy to cover this type of claim in some cases. Risk Management Tip Issue – I am unsure if my current BOP has the recommended coverage above.
• Business Auto
Property/General Liability Insurance tips to help reduce “gaps” in coverage.
• Worker’s Compensation
There are undoubtedly other policies that a successful dental practice needs. We addressed only the BOP in this article. We strongly encourage you to speak with us about any of the following that you might need:
Issue – It is imperative to review your BOP for the following coverages, placed in order of importance, based on the knowledge of insuring dentists for more than 50 years.
• Water/Sewer Backup – It is no secret there is a lot of water in a dental practice. It is common for a drain to back up, causing significant property damage. This coverage is usually limited or not included at all unless added.
• Professional Liability
• Commercial Umbrella
• Cyber Liability – Some BOPs offer limited coverage for Data Breach; however, we believe a separate Cyber Liability policy is crucial in today’s world. Cyber claims are rapidly becoming a top 10 claim that occurs in a dental practice. Data Breach is not comprehensive enough to cover the numerous threats a dental practice faces today.
Insurance: A Necessary Evil (Part II)
By: Joe Strunk, Owner/CEO of 3000 Insurance Group
PRACTICE MANAGEMENT
• Employment Practices Liability – This provides insurance for negligence and allegations related to employees: harassment, wrongful termination, and/or discrimination. The limits on this type of insurance vary from about $100,000 to $250,000. We strongly suggest a separate policy with higher limits.
• ERISA Bond – If you have a retirement plan in your dental practice, an ERISA Bond is required with a limit equal to or greater than 10% of the value of the assets in the plan, up to a maximum of $500,000.
• Increased General Liability Limits – While all BOPs have General Liability, we strongly encourage higher limits. In almost all cases, we use a $2,000,000 General Liability limit. The increased cost of $2,000,000 is generally less than $50/year for each practice location.
Property and General Liability insurance is usually provided as a Business Owners Policy (BOP). No two BOPs are the same; however, they provide similar types of insurance: Property, Liability, and Business Income. The language in the BOP and the endorsements (extras) can mean the difference between covered and denied claims.
Limits of Insurance Tips
• Employee Benefits Liability – If your practice offers benefits (Health Insurance, 401K, etc.), this coverage provides protection if you fail to offer benefits to an employee, and they suffer damages as a result.
Solution – If you have your BOP with 3IG, there is a good chance we have addressed these issues in your policy. We are also happy to review your existing BOP and tell you what gaps need to be “filled” if you are not insured with 3IG. Either way, feel free to contact our office and allow us to review your insurance with you.
• Directors & Officers
Solution – Many of these coverages cost very little and can help when a claim occurs. We try to include them in all our dental practice BOPs. The list is not comprehensive, but it certainly hits many of the most critical gaps in coverage.
• Flood
• Employee Dishonesty – This is a top five claim in dental practices. Regrettably, it is common for employees to find themselves in situations where they can’t resist stealing from their employer. The limits on this type of insurance usually vary from $25,000 to $100,000 or more.

5. Safer prescribing of controlled substances
• Integrating with existing practice software
How Do ePrescriptions and ePrescription Software Work?
First and foremost, to write ePrescriptions dental providers will need ePrescription software. After entering all relevant patient and prescription information, the prescription is sent to the patient’s pharmacy. But, that’s not all, ePrescription software can do more than that, including:
• Providing up-to-date drug directory with instant access
When medicines prescribed by a primary care physician may be unknown or a patient might forget, or there’s an allergy to a medication you’re prescribing, both your records and pharmacy records can flag the prescription, alerting you to a problem before the patient arrives at the pharmacy
• Providing access to patient prescription history regardless of prescriber
If other providers are using ePrescription software, prescription information is available to any prescriber, regardless of the provider, that will flag duplicate prescriptions and let you know when you should be concerned about prescribing a controlled Insubstance.short,ePrescriptions
are safer, faster, and more convenient for both your office and your patients. Improved workflows mean your office is more efficient, boosting patient care and satisfaction. Further, ePrescriptions improve accuracy and provide safety nets for drug concerns from interactions to potential abuse.
Experts estimate that, even today, nearly a quarter of medication errors are attributable to poor handwriting. ePrescriptions, delivered electronically, ensure that prescriptions are filled properly and accurately, drastically reducing pharmacy call backs and 3.errors.Fewer interactions/contraindications
Top 5 Benefits of ePrescribing
• Auto-filling patient information to streamline and prevent duplicate entries
2. Reduced errors and call backs
• Saving prescriptions and pharmacies to speed up entries
Additionally, the ability to auto-fill patient data and save preferences for patients and pharmacies means you and your team can work faster with the tech working for you.
When you are a practice manager or owner, one of your core responsibilities is to find ways to improve efficiency while maintaining and improving the quality of care. For decades, technology has improved patient care and experiences in the lab and clinic, but the administrative office has lagged behind.
Automation is designed to simplify and speed up repetitive tasks. ePrescribing has, for that reason, been one way that dental practices are able to leverage technology to boost practice productivity and improve patient care. The benefits go beyond productivity boosts though.
For many patients and staff, delays in business and administrative tasks can be frustrating. For practice managers and owners, those delays can be costly. The very real friction created by manual processes, especially prescription processing, can be alleviated thanks to advances in technology that bring improvements to your practice and front office operations.
Instead of having to return to an office and remain tied to a desktop to complete work, cloud-based ePrescribing is faster and can be handled on the fly, improving the workflow in your office.
1. Easier and faster (especially for your patients)
• Cloud flexibility - securely prescribe from anywhere ePrescription software provides the seamless connection between your dental office and pharmacies to facilitate quick and easy filling of prescriptions necessary to deliver the care your patients need and deserve.
4. Improved office efficiency and productivity

The Top Five Reasons to Use ePrescribing to Boost Efficiency
• Connecting to a vast network of pharmacies
Manual prescriptions require a patient to make time to get to the pharmacy and wait for the prescription to be filled. Or they need to wait on the pharmacist to notice a phoned or faxed prescription. With an ePrescription, the pharmacy has all the information it needs to prepare the prescription before your patient even leaves your office.

Dental environments are frequently exposed to high levels of contaminated indoor air. The aerosols and splatter generated during routine dental procedures are known to carry significant levels of microbial contaminants and blood, increasing the airborne bio-burden and carrying an increased risk of infection for staff and patients. Dental professionals are also at risk for infections transmitted from patients who may be carriers of viruses.
