Story & Illustration by Rachel Ortas

Wow! What did you find in the attic Messy Monster?

Look! A survival guide book and a language dictionary!

4

It’s a magic suitcase! Ready for an adventure!

All aboard! Our journey is about to begin!

Ok, the book says that we have to look at where the sun is to work out where we’re going.

Land ahoy! A desert island!

‘First, we need to build a shelter to keep us dry and safe from the wild beasts at night,’ says Felix, reading from the book.

5

‘Hey, why don’t we take a BUS tour around the island?’ Suggests Messy Monster.

‘Let’s see…then we need to explore!’ reads Felix.

Woah!!

Here’s a tiger bus! Perfect timing!

Take a seat! Whoa! You just have to get used to the wavy movement of the bus!

When our three friends arrive back at their camp after a fantastic tour around the island, they find a note pinned onto the door of their shelter. What does the note say?

Zoe uses the dictionary to translate what the note says. ‘It’s an invitation to a party at Kirikiki village!’

‘Hang on, I’ll use the Language Dictionary’, says Zoe.

‘There’s a map in the guide book with directions’, says Felix.

7

So it wasn’t a deserted desert island after all! When the friends arrive at the party, Zoe says ‘Krikrikri’, which means: ‘Hello, how do you do?’ And the Kirikiki folk reply, ‘Krukriku’, which means: ‘Thank you for coming!’

It’s very useful to travel with a good guide book and a good dictionary!

8

Soon they all become firm friends!

They dance the Kirikiki twist…

They all drink the delicious juice of a giant coconut…

And after all the fun, it’s time to go home. ‘Kroo, kroo, kroo’, they all say, which means: ‘bye-bye’ in Kirikiki.

When they get back home, Messy Monster, Felix and Zoe send the Kirikiki folk a letter inviting them to come and visit them!

Questions with Zim Zam Zoom:

How do you pitch a tent? It’s a lovely day and Zim Zam Zoom are in the garden enjoying the sunshine Yeah! We can sleep under the stars!

Let’s sleep in the garden tonight!

Here’s what we need to build a tent. Look!

We need some shelter to keep us warm and dry - we need a tent!

A waterproof sheet

Pegs Poles

Hmmm! I can’t see anything!

10

You need the poles to keep the sheet up!

Now that the poles are propping-up the tent, we can go inside.

Arrrgh!

Whoops! We forgot to peg the tent down!

I’m inside and I’ve just turned on a lamp. Hold this page up to the light to see me! Phew! Now that I’ve hammered the pegs into the ground, the tent won’t blow away.

11

I love sleeping outside under the stars! But look at all the insects flying around the tent. They are flying towards the light.

A tent can keep you dry, warm and away from animals!

The next morning Did you sleep well? Do you like camping? I slept really well last night! I was toasty-warm but I woke-up early when the sun rose!

Did you hear the owl in the night? And all the birds singing early this morning?

Hmmm - this is the most delicious breakfast I’ve ever eaten! I love camping! 13

Aya’s Holiday Story and illustration by Alex Barrow

Here we are in London...

...where Aya and her mum are visiting on their holiday Aya! Why did you pack those binoculars?

Are you going to carry those binoculars around all day?

But mama, I need them to spot the dinosaurs! I can’t wait to see them!

We’re going to visit museums not the jungle!

Now we need to catch a bus...

29

Aya and her mum hop on a bus! Can you follow their trail all the way to the dinosaur museum? Can you spot the famous London landmarks Aya spies through her binoculars?

Big Ben

Tower Bridge

The Shard

The London Eye

30

St. Paul’s Cathedral

Is this the museum?

Is this where the dinosaurs live?

Or there?

Are they here?

What about here?

31

They finally arrive at the museums! But which one has the dinosaurs?

LOOK!!!!!

Look!

That museum is covered in dinosaur gargoyles*! Lucky you brought your binoculars Aya! They helped us find the museum! YIPPEE!

32

OK!

(*Gargoyles are statues carved out of stone on buildings)

Suddenly... Aya sees this through her binoculars!

1/2 cup of butter

44

On a low heat, melt the sugar, butter and golden syrup in a pan.

Put the chopped apple, oats and cinnamon into a large bowl, add the contents of the saucepan and thoroughly mix all the ingredients.

2

4

Take the saucepan off the heat and chop up the apples into small pieces.

Put the mix in an ovenproof dish and pat it down. Cook in the oven for 30mins until golden brown.

Where does cinnamon come from? 80-90% of the world’s cinnamon comes from a faraway island called Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean. Cinnamon is actually the bark of Cinnamomum tree. It is peeled off the tree and then dried, which is when it curls into hard sticks. These are ground into a powder which can be used in recipes like this one!
