Hello OKIDO readers! Welcome to your magazine. It is yours to read, have fun and draw on.

Can you draw what is inside your head?

Story & Illustration by: Rachel Ortas

When things disappear they often end up in Messy Monster’s tummy.

‘Hey, Messy Monster! What do you have in your belly?’

‘Hello robot!’ A robot!

‘Do you want to play?’

‘Play? No! I can count small and big numbers’

‘On my planet we can count and count and count...’

‘With my mechanical brain, I can count anything.’ Are you ever happy?

Are you ever angry? Are you ever excited?

With our brain in our head, we can dream, play, imagine, learn and invent all kind of things.

‘We can think! We can think of good things and mischief too!’

‘Ok! Let’s go play’...

Our questions with

ZIM, ZAM & ZOOM

Story by: Dr. Sophie Illustration by: Kaz Takahashi

Can you see colours, count and draw? Do you remember my name? Can you move your leg like me?

Do you breathe whilst you are sleeping?

What is it inside of you that decides to do all of those things?

Your brain inside your head decides everything! I learn words with my brain I remember ZIM’s name with my brain I learn how to count with my brain

My brain makes me breathe in and out automatically all of the time

My brain makes me feel pain if I put my feet on something sharp

I dream with my brain I decide to move my fingers with my brain

My brain makes my heart beat My brain tells me when I need to wee I recognise a smell with my brain

How is this happening?

I want to move my finger The brain sends a message to the hand

I want to kick that ball The brain sends a message to the leg

The muscle pulls the finger, then the finger moves

The muscle pulls the knee, then the foot moves

I am going to laugh!

A nerve carries the message, ‘That tickles!!!” to the brain

Wahoo! this is cold

A nerve carries the message ‘something cold’ to the brain Someone tickles you…

You have an ice cube in your hand

When Koto was a girl of two her Daddy took her to the zoo. ‘My Mummy took me to the zoo’ said Dad, ‘and now I’m taking you!’ They walked together through the gates Dad said to Koto: ‘I can’t wait!’ ‘Now we’re here inside the zoo. Do anything you want to do.’ Can you guess what happened then? A Giraffe walked by Koto stared at the sky Daddy looked at Piranhas Koto ate her banana

While the old Lion dreamed Daddy queued for ice cream

By the side of a Moose Koto gurgled her juice

Leopards slept in a tree Koto needed a wee

The bats hung upside down Koto ran round

While the Polar Bear froze Koto tweaked Daddy’s nose Somewhere near the meercats Koto lost her sunhat

Pandas chewed their bamboo Koto needed a poo Where the owls slept for hours Koto skipped through the flowers While the tiger was pacing Koto made faces At the red foxes’ lair Koto twiddled her hair Dad watched the baboons Koto wanted balloons

While the monkeys pulled faces Koto undid her laces Children watched Polar Bears Koto played on the stairs As the cockatoos trilled Koto ran down the hill At the crocodile pond Koto yawned By an old chimpanzee Koto said ‘Carry me’ Seals played with their pups Daddy picked Koto up By the Pigmy Hippo Koto said: Dad, can we go? As the penguins got colder Koto slept on Dad’s shoulder

When they walked through the gate Koto said ‘That was great’ Can we come back again? Daddy smiled: Just say when! That’s the end!

You will need: 2 cups of flour, 125g butter, 5 eggs, 3 courgettes, a good pinch of salt, 8 tablespoons of double cream, 10 fresh, chopped mint leaves (or basil), 1 pack of feta cheese (or grated cheddar).

1• To make the dough, cut the butter into pieces and put in a large bowl with the flour. Mix between your fingers until you get a sandy texture.

2• Add an egg, knead the dough and roll into a ball. You may need to add one or two tablespoons of water in case it’s too dry.

3• To make the tart filling, beat the four eggs in a separate bowl and mix in the cream, salt, chopped mint and the grated courgettes. 4• Roll out the pastry and place it in a greased tart dish. Pour the courgette mix all over the pastry, crumble the feta on top with your fingers.

5. Bake the tart for 30 minutes at 2250C in preheated oven. Serve it warm or cold with a nice lettuce salad. Enjoy!

Story & Illustration by: Les and Tots

It was nearly bedtime. Sukie had her mug of cocoa and began to feel very sleepy. Sukie drifted off into a cat nap, dreaming...

Sukie found herself back in the magical garden with her friends. Sukie loved to paint. What would she paint today?

‘Oh Sukie, please can you paint something bright and cheerful?’ asked TedsnaiI. ‘I had a scary dream’

‘I know just the thing to paint.’ said Sukie. She reached for the yellow pot of paint. ‘Now Tedsnail, if you have another bad dream, all you have to do is look up in the sky at night. Find the brightest star and that star will chase away all your scary dreams.’ ‘Thanks Sukie for that star tip,’ said Tedsnail.

She painted a big, bright yellow star.

Sukie and Tedsnail looked up in the sky and there were many bright stars. Can you spot the letter in the sky?.

The wind in the trees was whistling. Sukie suddenly woke up. ‘I think I just had a wonderful dream about a big bright star!’

What is in the sky? Join the Stars to discover it.

1. Put 10 objects on a tray 2. Ask your friend to look at them for a few moments 3. Without your friend looking, remove one object 4. Ask your friend to see if they can find what is missing.

Memory Game

Can you guess what it is? How to play: Firstly, prepare the guessing box by making a hole in a cardboard box (ask an adult to cut it for you). Then you will need at least 2 people to play. One person collects 5 to 10 items from the house, the park or even the beach. Then hides the objects in the box and close it shut.

The other person will guess what is inside the box by putting their hand through the hole and asking questions such as: ‘Is it rough or smooth?’ ‘Is it soft, tickly or hard?’ ‘What shape is it?’ ‘Does it bite?!’
