Wash your hands!!!

But we don’t like washing our hands all the time!

They are not so dirty, almost clean.

I like my hands to be dirty, messy, full of germs!

Oh! can you see them?

‘Oh yes!’ said Messy Monster. If I become very extremely extremely tiny – MICROSCOPIC I can see millions of germs; beastly bacteria and viruses too.

Some are funny, some are ugly, some are scary, hairy, fluffy, mini, mini, mini, mini beasts.

Quick! Quick! Let’s wash our hands, and get rid of all those mini mini beasts.

Our questions with

What are germs?

Germs are very very small creatures, so small that you cannot see them. They are like tiny mini beasts, they are alive and live everywhere.

When Zim wears his special glasses he can see all the tiny germs around.

So where can we find germs? There are lots in the soil.

There are some on us.

There are lots on our shoes.

There are some in water.

There are some on door handles.

We can protect ourselves really well.

The Nose stops the germs from the air.

The Skin stops the germs getting inside us.

In our blood we have white blood cells that can kill and eat germs.

When you wash your hands the germs go away!

So it’s good to breathe in with your nose!

When you catch a cold your nose gets runny - it’s pushing the germs out!

When you cut yourself make sure you clean your skin and put a plaster on the cut to stop the germs sneaking in. I don’t feel very well! Yum! When our cells are fighting, we feel ill, have a fever and we have to rest. Sometimes we have to take medicine to help.

Where are his friends?

The Uninvited Guests Poem by Gabby Dawnay, Illustration by Alex Barrow

With an itch comes a scratch With a scratch comes a scrub – It’s time to dip your head in the tub! It’s time for the comb with the tiny teeth That searches, removes and scoops beneath – Finding the critters that give mum the jitters, Removing the lice that are not nice! Nit-picking teeny-weeny eggs Which grow into bugs like pins with legs. Oh! That pesky little louse Who chooses to make your hair his house. So wash, condition, comb and comb, Send them packing from their home. Off with the bugs, they need to go Or they will settle and they will grow And they will tickle and prickle and bite And you will itch and scratch all night, And through the day they’ll titter and play. So send the nit-wits on their way. “OUT!” we cry, to the lousy beast For trying to make your head his feast…
