Colour in the things that grow

Hello Okido readers! This issue is all about growing. Plants grow, trees grow, birds grow, you grow. All living things grow! Big or small! Let’s grow with Okido! Okido is yours to read, write and draw on. Enjoy! Start by writing your name:

Okido helps children learn through play. It is full of stories, activities and games that stimulate creativity and inspire scientific interest.

Messy Monster, Felix and Zoe meet a fly and a big bird. Zim Zam and Zoom wonder how we grow. Squirrel Boy has a bit of an accident with his outfit. Foxy visits the fun fair. Read about Sniff the nose, Slam the ear and help the gardener to get out of his overgrown garden. Read super stories, grow a mini vegetable garden, colour in and doodle-do! Plus much, much more to make, do and draw!

I don’t think so!

I would be happy to get smaller and smaller!

Anyway small is nice!

But you cannot get smaller.

You are going to grow.

Story & Illustration by Rachel Ortas

I am much bigger than you.

Oh! What is this strange fly?

Hey! You just found a mini beast.

Hey, I know Big Bird. Let’s go and find him!

Let’s go now!

FABULOUS!

Here he is!

I missed you so much! I stopped dancing...

I was so bored without you. I stopped singing...

It doesn’t matter whether you’re big or small...

There is nothing bigger than friendship!

How do we grow?

Hummm.... Zoom doesn’t seem to be growing!

Do we grow by being watered like plants?

Do we grow by being stretched while we sleep?

Are our feet getting bigger?

...or is it that our shoes shrinking?

Story by Dr Sophie and illustration by Alex Barrow

Questions with Zim Zam Zoom:

Alex had his dad mark his height on the door, so that they can see how much Alex has grown.

Let’s compare Alex and his dad to see their size difference and find out what did grow in them.

Hold the page up to the light to see what’s inside their bodies

10/11

alex 10/08 zoom 10/11

Will I grow too?

Can you spot the difference? Yes! The bones have grown they’re longer!

As we grow older our bones get longer and we get taller but what helps our bones grow?

Alex’s dad skeleton

Alex’s skeleton

For your bones and ALL of you to grow you need to eat well...

..get plenty of sleep..

...and exercise.

The skeleton (that’s all your bones) is getting bigger and taller each year. When you’re a “grown-up” it stops growing !

Hi, I’m Slam!

Hi, I’m Sniff!

Find out what happens to us when we grow up...

Pffft rubbish! Look at me, I’m all nose!

Now compare your nose to someone older. How much smaller is it?

Sniff, look at the size of you! I still think I’m bigger though...

Yes that’s right, I never stop growing and neither does Sniff!

Then everything slows down and eventually stops growing, apart from your NOSE and EARS!

Story & Illustration by Maggie Li

As we get older, we all get bigger! Your arms and legs, fingers and toes all grow!

The greatly overgrown garden! This poor gardener has become lost in his completely overgrown garden. Can you help him to find his way out, avoiding the giant snail, the long lost shed, the jumbo veg and the unruly flower bed?
