Story & Illustration by Rachel Ortas

Yuck! Vegetables are disgusting - I wish they’d never been invented!

We are so lucky to have plants!

4

Put on these bubble suits and come with me. I am going to show you a planet with no plants.

Hello Zoe and Felix! What are you saying?!! Plants are so good to eat!

Oh! This planet is so empty and sad....

Nothing around! No life at all...

Yes, this is what happens when there are no plants. Nothing can live because nothing can breathe!

5

Trees and plants make OXYGEN and that’s what we need to breathe.

A flying seed!

Look!

6

Catch it!

Let’s plant the seed...

...to grow a tree... ...that makes...

We can take off our bubble suits now as there is lots of oxygen! We can BREATHE!

Bravo, Bravo! We love a green planet!

7

Story by Dr Sophie and illustration by Alex Barrow

Questions with Zim Zam Zoom:

The Life of a Cherry I don’t like cherries. I LURVE cherries!

Hey Zam! Come inside quick, it’s going to rain!

8

Oh...what’s this? A brown stone?! Left inside the cherry?

This is a cherry seed!

Much later...

A plant is beginning to grow

Will the stone grow?

The seed starts growing roots

How does this plant eat and drink?

Can I drink with my feet like a plant?

leaves This plant loves warmth and light from the sun stem

The plant drinks with its roots

Summer

Spring

A new tree has grown from the cherry seed

A cherry flower becomes a cherry

I can see another cherry tree...

Can trees have babies?

...can trees move?

Trees can’t move because they have roots. But their seeds can move

Trees and plants reproduce by making fruits and seeds...

So seeds are like baby plants!

hahaha! Hey, Zoom is a bird! He’s got some cherries!

See, seeds travel before becoming a new tree

Can you guess what will happen later? yummy!

woops!

Once there lived three children. The first was Chlorophyll or Chloe for short.

Story and Illustration by Alex Barrow

Then there was Marina. She was a water child and lived in the sea.

16

And finally, up in the sky lived Sunny. Sunny was a fire child!

Chloe was a plant child and lived on the land. She never met any other children and was a glum little thing.

Like Chloe, Marina knew no other children.

But he was lonely, because like the other two, he thought he was the only child in the world.

One day, Marina spotted something bright and glowing in the sky… Hello! My name is Marina. What’s your name?

Oh hello! My name is Sunny. Do you want to play a game?

Marina and Sunny were so happy to meet each other! They soon became firm friends.

And strangely, every time they played together it would start raining!

One afternoon while Sunny and Marina were taking a stroll... Hey look over there, Marina! Who’s that?

Hello over there! My name’s Marina and this is my friend Sunny. What’s your name?

My name is Chloe.

After the rain they noticed that on the ground plants started to grow! 17

Why are you so sad, Chloe?

Sunny and Marina began to dance around Chloe. Soon clouds appeared and it started to rain!

Oh my! So beautiful!

18

I just feel so tired and cold. And I feel lonely, with no one to play with.

Whoopee! I’m feeling so alive!

We can warm you up! And we can make rain to play in, too!

And then a very strange thing happened indeed. Chloe’s hair began to grow thick and green and flowers started to bloom everywhere!

And from that day, the three children stayed good friends and the world became a greener place with their help!

Whenever it rains, they might be playing near you! 19
