While it feels like we've lived through our share of storms and weather events this year already, we're now gearing up for spring storm season. One proactive approach we take year-round is the trimming of trees away from our power lines so when the wind does come sweeping down the plains — and it always does — it won't lead to unnecessary power flashes and outages. For years now, we've been focused on system hardening, which is a fancy term for the aggressive, strategic improvement of our power system. We've installed state-of-the-art technology and studied each mile of line to look for ways to make it better, and that's led to a massive reduction in our outage times over the years. But a practice that often gets criticized may be the best investment we've made when it comes to reliability, and that's tree trimming. Who can forget the October ice storm? Did you know we only lost 200 poles due to the ice and high winds? I say 'only 200 poles' because five years prior during Winter Storm Goliath, we lost over 600 poles in a storm with pretty comparable ice accumulations. That's a testament to the focus we've put on improving our system — mostly via tree trimming. Adding a fiber-to-the-home network has allowed us to upgrade the system as well. More equipment attached to our poles means heavier poles are needed, and those withstand natural elements better than smaller poles. We know that over time, man-made infrastructure can and will fail. That's why we've been proactive about caring for our overhead lines and continue maintenance and looking for opportunities to improve it even more. Part of keeping the lights on is having a great workforce. Our lineworkers take pride in what they do in both the construction of our system and the maintenance of it. Our low outage numbers also show how dedicated our lineworkers are in going out in all kinds of weather. When the meteorologists are telling people to stay off the roads, you can bet OEC trucks will be rolling down the roads. As a member myself, I appreciate the dedication our lineworkers display, and I know you do too. OEC named 2021 Tree Line USA Utility by Arbor Day Foundation for the 15th year in a row The Arbor Day Foundation recently named OEC a 2021 Tree Line USA Utility in honor of our commitment to proper tree pruning, planting and care across our service area. "This marks our 15th year in a row to be recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree Line USA Utility," said CEO Patrick Grace. "Proper vegetation management is a top priority for us — evidenced by our two certified on-staff arborists — and we will continue to maintain our rights-of-way with careful consideration to the vegetation we come in contact with." Tree Line USA, a partnership between the Foundation and the National Association of State Foresters, recognizes public and private utilities for pursuing practices that protect and enhance America's urban trees. Tree Line USA promotes the dual goals of delivering safe and reliable electricity while maintaining healthy community forests. "Trees are a critical part of urban landscapes all across the United States," said Dan Lambe, president of the Arbor Day Foundation. OEC giving away 200 free trees in April
For the fourth year in a row, OEC is partnering with the Arbor Day Foundation to give free trees to member-consumers. "Members who take advantage of energy efficiency measures in the months leading up to summer can maximize their savings," said Daniel Lofland, energy efficiency solutions specialist. "We are proud to offer the Energy-Saving Trees program free of charge to our members." Energy-Saving Trees is a research-based, easy-to-use online mapping tool that takes the guesswork out of tree planting. By entering simple information about your home and yard, the tool calculates where to specifically and strategically plant trees for the greatest energy- and money-saving benefits. Planting the right tree in the right place is key to maximizing the energysaving benefits that trees provide. When planted properly, a single tree can save a homeowner up to 20 percent on energy costs. Members who are interested may begin claiming their one free tree on April 5 and must be able to pick it up at OEC's headquarters in Norman on April 24 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Please note those who reserved a free tree in 2020 are not eligible this year. How keeping trees trimmed helps power all members By Anne Prince At OEC, we strive to balance maintaining beautiful surroundings and ensuring a reliable power supply by keeping power lines clear in rights-of-way (ROW). While we recognize and appreciate the beauty of trees, there are three main benefits to tree trimming in ROW areas. A right-of-way is the land we use to construct, maintain, replace or repair underground and overhead power lines. Rights-of-way enable the co-op to provide clearance from trees and other obstructions that could hinder the power line installation, maintenance or operation. ROW areas are typically on public lands or located near a business or home. Regardless, OEC must be able to maintain the power lines above and below the ROW. The overall goal of our vegetation management program is to provide reliable power to our members while maintaining the beauty of our community. Proactive vegetation management benefits co-op members in three tangible ways. SAFETY First and foremost, we care about our members and put their safety and that of our lineworkers above all else. Overgrown vegetation and trees pose a risk to power lines. For example, if trees are touching power lines in our members’ yards, they can pose grave danger to families. If children can access those trees, they can potentially climb into a danger zone. Electricity can arc, or jump, from a power line to a nearby conductor like a tree. A proactive approach also diminishes the chances of fallen branches or trees during severe weather events that make it more complicated and dangerous for lineworkers to restore power.
RELIABILITY Of course, one of the biggest benefits of a smart vegetation management program is reliability. Strategic tree trimming reduces the frequency of downed lines causing power outages. Generally speaking, healthy trees don’t fall on power lines, and clear lines don’t cause problems. Proactive trimming and pruning keeps lines clear to promote reliability. We also use data and technology to maximize the efficiency of our operation. We follow the Arbor Day Foundation’s guidelines to be deemed a Tree Line USA Utility and encourage members to always call Okie (811) before digging so everyone has a safe experience. AFFORDABILITY As you know, OEC is a not-for-profit cooperative, and that means we strive to keep our costs in check in order to keep our rates affordable. This extends to our approach to vegetation management. If trees grow too close to power lines, the potential for expensive repairs also increases. Effective tree trimming and other vegetation management efforts keep costs down for everyone. [6630300503] Our community is a special place. We appreciate the beauty trees afford, but we also know our community depends on us to provide reliable energy. Through vegetation management, we are better able to keep the power lines clear, prepare for future weather events and secure the reliability of the grid.

Cesar Alvarez, OEC electrical engineer, recently completed the National Society of Professional Engineers certification program, earning him the coveted Professional Engineer Seal. To become licensed, engineers must complete a four-year college degree, work under a Professional Engineer for at least four years, pass two intensive competency exams and earn a license from their state's licensure board. Then, to retain their licenses, PEs must continually maintain and improve their skills throughout their careers. Congratulations Cesar and job well done!

WFEC GENERATION REPORT Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC), OEC's wholesale generation and transmission power provider, has an impressive renewable portfolio that includes wind, hydro and solar. OEC's Solar Garden, located at Interstate 35 and Highway 77 in Norman, began producing power in February 2017, and Tuttle's 40-acre Solar Farm began operation in March 2017. As more solar facilities come online, expect to see it added to WFEC's generation report, increasing the already robust mix of renewable energy sources.

Sweet & Spicy Stir Fry Ingredients 3 cups broccoli florets 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves - cut into 1 inch strips ¼ cup sliced green onions 4 cloves garlic, thinly sliced 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce 1 tablespoon chile paste
1 tablespoon low sodium soy sauce ½ teaspoon ground ginger ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon black pepper 1/8 cup chicken stock
Directions Place broccoli in a steamer over 1 inch of boiling water, and cover. Cook until tender but still firm, about 5 minutes. Heat the oil in a skillet over medium heat, and saute the chicken, green onions, and garlic until the chicken is no longer pink and juices run clear. Stir the hoisin sauce, chile paste, and soy sauce into the skillet; season with ginger, red pepper, salt, and black pepper. Stir in the chicken stock and simmer about 2 minutes. Mix in the steamed broccoli until coated with the sauce mixture.
